Unit 1 research methods worksheet for year 10
1. Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
Why would you complete research if you were creating a new media product?
ā¢ To find out if your target audience would buy your product
ā¢ To find out how much you could sell your product for
ā¢ To find out how to make your product more appealing to your target audience
ā¢ To find out how to market your product to your target audience
Find definitions of the 4 research methods and give your opinions as to advantages/disadvantages for each one.
Method Definition Advantage Disadvantage
Primary
They are original materials
and havenāt been filtered and
are what other research is
based on.
Have proof of pre-edited
material to show that itās your
work.
Holds a lot of memory which
isnāt always necessary.
Secondary
Use of discussion to build up
a resource product, like
magazines, TV broadcasts
etc.
Easy to get hold of and used
very often in everyday life.
There are some resources
produced that contain the
same information that could
be received more easily.
Quantitative
Use of questions to find out
information that you need to
know for your area of work.
Can find out a lot of
information that you may need
on many different subjects.
People donāt tend to like doing
surveys as they donāt find
them particularly interesting.
Qualitative
Used to get data about
humans and the
psychological science behind
their ways/actions.
When pitchers find out what
sort of character they are
dealing with and pitching to, it
can really help work out which
ideas would suit the customer
and put that in their favour.
You have to get involved in
peoples personal information,
which some people really
dislike.
2. Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
What research methods (e.g. primary, secondary, qualitative, quantitative) did you use when completing the
assignments in year 10 for Unit 5 (Crime Drama and Music Videos) and Unit 7 (Festival Bags) ?
I used primary sources a lot, and used all the own original footage for my crime scene drama but I used secondary
sources like photos from google images for my festival bag.
How did you collate, store and use the information when researching for your year 10 units? (e.g. did you book
mark key websites? Keep a list of websites used? Print off or save any info for your folders?)
I bookmarked a couple of websites like the Isle Of Wight official website to remember all the āline upā and see what the
atmosphere has been like in previous years in photos of festivals before.
What research techniques (e.g. using the library, the internet, watching videos, reading info, recces, practises,
plans etc) did you use when completing the assignments in year 10 for Unit 5 (Crime Drama and Music Videos)
and Unit 7 (Festival Bags) ?
I mostly used the internet to watch videos and do my research because itās easily accessible and has a lot of information
on there that was of use to me. I also used t e internet to gather pictures and use Photoshop for my festival bag.h
If you didnāt use some of the methods in year 10, would use you them if you were to do your projects again? How
and why would you do this?
I would probably try and use Qualitative research more to try and make my crime scene drama more effective to the
audience and see what people wanted in a festival bag etc.
