Where it
originated
from?
• Rhythm and blues, often abbreviated as R&B or
RnB, is a genre of popular African-American music
that originated in the 1940s.
• The term was originally used by record companies
to describe recordings marketed predominantly
to urban African Americans.
• In the commercial rhythm and blues music typical
of the 1950s through to the 1970s, the bands
usually consisted of piano, one or two guitars,
bass, drums, saxophone and sometimes
background vocalists.
• Lyrics focus heavily on the themes of triumphs
and failures in terms of relationships, freedom,
economics, aspirations and sex.

3. • The term rhythm and blues has undergone a number of shifts in meaning.
• Early 1950’s: It was frequently applied to blues records.
• Mid-1950’s: this style of music contributed to the development of rock and roll,
the term ‘R&B’ became used to refer to music styles that developed from and
incorporated electric blues, as well as gospel and soul music.
• 1960’s: several British rock bands were referred to and promoted as being RnB
bands, this was known as “British rhythm and blues”
• 1970’s: the term changed again and was used as a blanket term for soul and funk.
• 1980’s: a newer style of R&B developed, becoming known as “Contempory R&B”
which combines elements of rhythm and blues, soul, funk, pop, hip hop and
dance.

commonly shown and
help the audience to be
able to view my video as
a convention of the R&B
genre
• Locations:They tend to vary and are usually dependent
on the artist and the song itself. More common
locations include house, bedrooms, clubs, outside in
the streets, urban.
• Dress code: Female artists tend to wear minimal
clothing, mainly to attract the attention of males,
makeup is commonly used to make them look
“flawless”. Males artists are also topless sometimes but
if there not then they are dressed well and usual
wearing the newest jewellery or shoes. Most of them
seem to have tattoos as well.
• Camera: they use variety of shots e.g. wide angle and
panning shots to narrate the storyline.
