2. • RNB or R&B refers to a contemporary style of music based around
rhythm and blues. It also has elements of pop and hip pop
incorporated into its overall style.
• It is a genre of music mostly associated with African American citizens
as they predominantly tended to record this genre of music.
This genre came about in the 1940’s but since has shifted between
definitions:
Mid 50’s – the term contributed to the development of rock and roll
music
70’s – RNB became an umbrella term for all music associated with soul
and funk styles.
80’s – created the style of contemporary RNB which combines elements
of all music into one

3. 1948 – Jerry Wexler (Head of Billboard magazine) coined the term rhythm
and blues as a substitute for race music within the United States.
Robert Hall defined any music recorded by African Americans as a catchall
term for music recorded by this particular group of people.
In commercial rhythm and blues typical of the 1950s - 1970s, the bands
consisted of piano, one/two guitars, bass, drums, and saxophone.
Arrangements were rehearsed and were sometimes accompanied by
background vocalists. Simple repetitive parts mesh, creating momentum and
rhythmic interplay producing mellow, lilting, and often hypnotic textures.
While singers are emotionally engaged with the lyrics, they remain cool,
relaxed, and in control. The bands dressed in suits a practice associated with
the modern popular music that rhythm and blues performers aspired to
dominate. Lyrics often seemed fatalistic, and the music typically followed
