3. What is R&B
➔ R&B originated from the American blues and soul music during the 1940s,
1950s, and 1960s in the United States. At a time when urbane, rocking, jazz
based music with a heavy, insistent beat were becoming more popular among
the Afro-Americans in particular.
➔ The music also evolved from African spirituals, African chants, work songs, field
hollers, and drum music, revivalist hymns, and country dance music. The blues
grew up in the Mississippi Delta just upriver from New Orleans, the birthplace
of jazz.
