3. Michael Faraday
He excelled in thehistoryofscience as a physicistand a
chemist. He
wasconsideredoneofthemostinfluentialscientistofall time.
He wasbornon 22 September 1791 in
Newington, Surrey, England.
Son of a blacksmith, had a poorchildhood. He
waseducated at Sandemanianmaintained by
thesect, whichfollowedthebiblicalbookof Job, emphasizing
human weakness.

4. In 1805, he leftschoolwith 13
yearsandwenttoLondon, where he becameapprenticeof a
bookbinderandbookseller. In the store he found a
copyoftheEncyclopediaBritannicaandwithitsreading he
becamefascinated by electricity.
In 1812, Sir Humphry Davy (from 1778 until
1829), thefamousEnglishchemist, isworkingtemporarilyblin
ded in hislaboratory at the Royal Institute. A
customerofthebookstorerecommendedfor Faraday
assistant. In 1813, with 21 years, Faraday assumedthe
post ofassistant.
5. In 1815, he becamesuperintendentofequipmentofthe
Royal Institute, in London. In
thefollowingyears, followstheworkoftheDanishphysicist
Hans Christian Orsted (from 1777 until
1851), andtheworkoftheFrenchphysicistAndre-Marie
Ampere (from 1775 until 1836). He buildshisownbatteries.
In 1821, he discoversthatelectricity can produce a
rotatorymotion, theprincipleoftheelectric motor. Constructs
a primitivemodelofengine. In 1823, he studies how gases
becomeliquids at lowtemperatures. Liquefiedchlorine.
6. In 1824, he became a memberofthe Royal
SocietyofLondon. In
1825, workingwithAnalyticalChemistry. Faraday
discoveredbenzene. With 33 years, became director ofthe
Royal Institute.
In 1831, discoversthatelectricity can be produced at one

7. In 1841, with 50 years, suffersfrompoorhealthandwentto
live in thecountryside. In 1845, he discoveredthat a
magneticfield can rotatetheplaneofpolarization (vibration)
ofthelight. Thisbecameknown as the Faraday
rotation, whichprovidesthedesired link
betweenlightandmagnetism.
In 1860, with 69 years, waivesthe Royal Institute. Lives in
"graceand favor" oneofthe royal castles at Hampton
Court, nearLondon. In 1867, with 75 years, Faraday dies
at Hampton Courton August 25 andisburied in
HighgateCemetery.
