( Faraday was a British chemist and physicist
who contribute significantly to the study of
ELECTROMAGNETISM
ELECTROCHEMISTRY.)
2. MICHAEL FARADAY EARLY LIFE
Born on 22 September, 1791 in Newington Butts, England, UK.
3rd child of James and Margaret Faraday.
Till 13 he received basic education.
At 14, he was apprenticed to a local bookbinder George Riebau and
studied himself for next 7 years.
In 1813, “Humphry Davy” appointed him to the job of chemical
assistant at the Royal Institution.
Married Sarah Barnard on 12 June 1821.
3. WHY WE SAY MICHAEL FARADAY LEGEND?
It is not an accident that Albert Einstein used to keep
photos of three scientists in his office:
Sir Isaac Newton
James clerk Maxwell
Michael Faraday.
4. HOWFARADAY CONTRIBUTEDTO ELECTRICITY?
Mutual Induction.
Field Theory .
Electric Dynamo (modern day electric motor).
Investigation of the fundamental nature of electricity.
Electromagnetic Rotation.
Basis of the first Law of Electrosis.
Faraday’s effect.
Diamagnetism.
5. SCIENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENTS
1821: Discovery of Electromagnetic Rotation.
1823: Gas Liquefaction and Refrigeration.
1825: Discovery of Benzene.
1831: Discovery of Electromagnetic Induction.
1834: Faraday’s Laws of Electrolysis.
1836: Invention of the Faraday Cage.
1845: Discovery of the Faraday Effect – a magneto-optical effect.
1845: Discovery of Diamagnetism as a Property of all Matter.
6. INVENTIONOF FARADAY CAGE
( 1836) 1836 =
What it is?
Is an enclosure formed by conductive material.
Used to block electric fields.
7. FARADAY CAGE EFFECT
The Faraday cage, Discovered in 1836, depends on the following 2
principles:
• A Faraday cage is an enclosed conducting shell.
• This hollow conducting shell will have no electric field inside.
This Faraday cage effect causes Faraday cages to act as shields for
strong electric fields or other electrical effects.
8. OPERATIONOF FARADAY CAGE
An external electrical field leads to rearrangement of the charges, and this
cancels the filed inside. Electric fields (applied externally) create forces
on electrons in the conductor, creating a current, which will further result
in charge rearrangement. The current will cease when the charges
rearrange and the applied field inside is cancelled.
10. APPLICATIONOF FARADAY CAGE
Safety against lightening: The cage protects the interior of the vehicle from the
strong electric fields.
Microwave : The metal shell of the microwave acts as a Faraday cage.
Protections for electronic goods : Electronic equipment can be shielded and
protected from stray electromagnetic fields by using coaxial cables that contain a
conducting shell that acts as a Faraday cage.
Protective suits for linemen: linemen often wear protective suits that act as
Faraday cages while working with high voltage power lines. These suits protect
them from getting electrocuted.
MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging) scan rooms are good examples of a Faraday
cage. External radio frequency signals are prevented from interfering with the data
coming from the patient
12. CONCLUSION
A good scientist should always have the spirit of inquiry.
His open mindedness lead him into being a significant contributor to electricity.
Faraday was a man of honor who was strong in his convictions.
He also had a lot of patience and objectivity but above everything, he is a hard worker.
