2. Humble Bragging
• With a plethora of social
media platforms such as
– Four Square
– Twitter
– Facebook
– Instagram
It has become easier now,
more than ever, to share
with our friends our
achievements and everyday
doings
3. What is it?
• Humble bragging:
• According to #TheDailyBeast, a humble brag is: a feigned attempt at humility
that’s really just an excuse to brag. It’s made obnoxiously easy by social
networking, and it thrives in an age where narcissism is the norm
• Can be easy to miss nowadays, for this is one of the reasons social platforms exist
4. • Humble bragging
as always been
around, even
before social
media
• Self promotion is
sometimes
necessary when
we are feeling
down (without
even realizing it)
5. The Reason Behind It?
• Humble bragging sounds very negative, not always the case
• Social media is the platform for carving out a niche and
personal territory
I found this #humblebrag on my newsfeed
while I was doing this project! And from one
of my favorite musicians (Bethany
Cosentino)
7. Bragging Vs. Patting Yourself on the Back
• Difference between bragging with passion and
authenticity and sounding self-absorbed
• Show, don’t tell
• Let social proof do the heavy lifting
• Look before you leap
• Manage your message
• Make conversation 2-way
• Make it personal
– Lots of times we forget humans are behind twitter handles and
Facebook pictures
8. • Critics have related humble bragging (or sharing
things on social media) to depressive symptoms
in young teens
• Teens are already very insecure, “target group”
• Those who are already “toiling” with
depression are more likely to feel effects
• Social media allows them to spend their time
viewing others’ lives, comparing their
clothes/friend amount/activities to their peers
9. • Viewing peers’ status updates,
photos of happy-looking people
having great times (especially if
viewer was not invited)
• Creates skewed view of life: no
real way to see facial
expressions or real body
language
• Viewed as a “popularity
contest” for some kids
• “Also, it’s common among some
teens to post snotty or
judgmental messages on the
Facebook walls of people they
don’t like, said Gaby Navarro, 18,
a senior from Grayslake, Ill.” –

10. …Not Always Bad
• “humble bragging” may be the future of self
promotion
• Some companies are beginning to use Unrabble,
an app that has prospective employees
deconstruct their resumes into achievements
(called “brags”) and back them up by their own
social media references (such as LinkedIn or
Facebook)
• Makes it easier for employers to find and validate
prospects’ achievements
