6. NME was originally a published tabloid newspaper in 1952 and through the development of technology, image-editing programmes allowed them to create their own magazine.
7. Main Audience After viewing a selection of NME featured artists throughout their years as a magazine, I assume their main target audience is 15 – 20 year old male rock fans. They feature many artists falling under the sub genres of rock, both underground and mainstream such as Cold play and Beady Eye. Occasionally the editor has chosen to feature artists from other genres, such as Willow Smith, to give variety to the content and attract other audiences. The language used is not particularly formal and seems to be for the older reader, with phrases such as ‘shit shovelling’ and the mention of drugs included in the articles.
8. Audience NME’s main form of advertisement seems to be online with websites such as Twitter and Facebook Well known and popular artists are also featured on their front covers to attract fans Digital downloaded copies became available and IPod apps, as well as newsletter and an RSS feed Special offers such as discounted subscriptions are also offered.
9. Ownership and Distribution NME is owned by Time Warner They are self distributed in stores and have been doing so since 20092, but in 2009 began using the internet The magazines are usually sold at most supermarkets and news agents The digital download copies are available on ziniodigitalmagazines.com
10. Magazine Stats. On average NME have 369,000 readers Sell 38,486 units per year Profit = £96,215 through magazine sales NME magazine copy = £2.50 Recent statistics have shown that NME sales have dropped by 20% in the last year, most likely due to their online information for readers, allowing purchase to be optional.
