safe?
Foxes stay safe by building small
burrows of dens in grasslands to
protect themselves from
predators such as wolves. Loss of
habitat is a threat to foxes.
10. The sized
They're medium-sized, between 7 and 15 pounds,
with pointy faces, lithe frames, and bushy tails. But
unlike their relatives, foxes are not pack animals.
When raising their young, they live in small
families—called a "leash of foxes" or a "skulk
of foxes"—in underground burrows.
11. Threats
• The scarcity of prey is the most prevalent threats for
the Arctic fox. Disease and genetic pollution of the
species by foxes bred in captivity also threatens this
species.
12. Hibernating
• Foxes do not hibernate when it gets cold in
the winter. They remain active throughout the
year and generally live and hunt within a 1- to
2-mile radius. When extreme weather hits,
foxes sometimes seek shelter for a couple of
days, but they resume their normal activities
once the weather passes.
