Liberal Or Conservative Analysis
Any statement that begins with "There are two types of people..." ought to be met with criticism.
People aren't that simple. But the current system of American politics undermines this, tugging at a
few major core values that tend to separate people into precisely two groups: liberals and
conservatives. Even the most historically beloved and supported president, Theodore Roosevelt, was
denied another term upon campaigning for a third ("middle") party. Political stratification always
induces disagreement, but the late trend escalades dissent to detriment. Most people would admit to
knowing at least a couple of benevolent and/or intelligent people from both ends of the political
spectrum. This begs the question of which side, liberal or conservative, is better. Is it more practical
to be a conservative–more ethical to be a liberal? Jonathan Haidt, a renown social ... Show more

He concluded that humans are born with an innate moral system, but that social environments,
child–rearing, and life experiences rearrange the priorities of this innate system. Morality consists of
five channels: "harm/care, fairness/reciprocity, in–group/loyalty, authority/respect, and
purity/sanctity." The first two concern themselves with individual treatment, the last three concern
themselves with community and order. A survey in 2008 compared individual's prioritization of
these five channels with their position on the liberal/conservative spectrum. The survey revealed that
liberal people value care and fairness significantly higher than they value loyalty, authority, and
purity. Oddly enough, I cannot begin this sentence with "in contrast," or "conversely," because the
conservative individuals valued care and fairness relatively high as well. The difference between the
two is that conservative values are less stratified. Predictably, fairness is the lowest value for

Conservative Viewpoints
Conservatives and liberals have completely different views of the purpose of government. Like two
ends of a stick, their views are against one another although they should be the same. However,
there is always a moderate position that can satisfy both extreme ends. As our title states, we should
be united. My personal beliefs and ideals would be assisting me when finding the moderate views,
for I'm neither a conservative nor a liberal; I believe in pleasing both ends, which, despite the
stories, can be possible.
The first portion of the preamble states that the purpose of government is to establish justice. While
conservatives believe that justice only means punishing the criminal (Hardisty), liberals believe that
justice means that society ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To conservatives, it would mean that the government would allow free use of weapons in order for
the individual to protect him/herself. To liberals, it would mean that the government is there to
protect the citizens, to provide protection for the individuals. Conservatives don't trust the police, as
the police force is a part of the government. Similar to how liberals don't trust anyone with a
weapon, seeing many homicide stories have made the headlines. As a moderate, I've done researches
on how other countries control their government and I found one weapon control from Japan to be
very suitable for our own use in the United States. The idea benefits both sides of the party; the
common individuals are allowed to have weapons for their own protection but only when they have
taken classes and pass a certain test of mental and physical health to prove their fitness. A
background check is also permitted to prevent any member of criminal or extremist groups to have
such weapons. Then a file is kept along with all gun owners in that area. Every few years, the
individual could take their weapon to the police for inspection and any broken parts. Every few
years, the individual would also retake the fitness tests to ensure they are still very able to keep the
firearm. This includes to all police members as well. That would be gun control, it's not taking away

The Election Of The Conservative Party Leadership
What, if anything, was new about Thatcherism? The ballot for the Conservative Party Leadership on
February 1975 was a turning point for the History of late 20th century politics in England. The
figure of Margaret Thatcher had emerged surprisingly as the new Party leader against the incumbent
Edward Heath. Thatcher's importance does not only lies on she being the first woman to lead the
Conservative Party, but on the ideas and statecraft that later gave life to a new concept –
Thatcherism– that marked British politics during her 11 years in command and managed to
influence the future of England's politics. However, the main point of disagreement and discussion
has been what was really Thatcherism and Margaret Thatcher's ideology ... Show more content on

She also wanted to make Britain a competitive trading nation. Furthermore, she took the ideas of the
Scottish political economist Adam Smith, whom she considered the most important theorist of free
trade. The Wealth of Nations (1776) advocated for removing restrictions that were aimed to
advantage national good towards exterior goods. Thatcher wanted to embrace free trade as this
would encourage producers and traders. Finally it would stimulate competitiveness and innovation,
creating greater wealth and everyone would benefit. The result of these ideals winded up in a
revolution in economic policy and three elections won by Margaret Thatcher and the Conservative
Party. However there is a thin line between the fact that these ideals were not firstly hers – Victorian
values, free trade, monetarism, etc. – making Thatcherism seem as a mixture of well–known goods,
and the fact that Margaret Thatcher did introduced such a new statecraft that as a consequence the
new 'ism' after her name continued for years after she was no longer Prime Minister. It is argued that
Margaret Thatcher did not instigate this intellectual revolution and indeed it was the figure of Joseph
Keith during Heath's government that initiated the spread of freedom ideas and the fight against
socialism. He set up in 1974 the Centre for Policy Studies as a think–tank that

How successful was Edward Heath as leader of the Conservative Party between 1965 and 1974?
Edward Heath led the conservative party through a difficult and revolutionary period in British
politics from the years 1965 to 1974, punctuated by the joining of the ECC in 1973, prolonged
damaging strikes, high levels of inflation, and many monumental U–turns through the period of his
office. The concept of change is most notably seen right from the offset of his leadership as he was
the first conservative leader to be elected democratically, by ballot, marking a turning away from the
old boy network of Tory prime ministers preceding him. He himself went against tradition, coming
from very humble backgrounds, having been through the grammar school ... Show more content on

Secondly, as Wilson faced crises in the failure of Trade Union reform and a stagnant economy, the
Tories moved steadily to the right, many seeing this as a successful move by Heath. The move to the
right got a massive publicity boost in Selsdon Park Hotel at a shadow cabinet meeting (January
1970) in the run–up to the election. In the public eye, the term 'Selsdon Man' (a phrase readily
clutched by the media) meant a return to free enterprise –which directly contrasted Wilson's policies
of interventionism – the return to the values of hard work, trade union reform and a more efficient
and independent industry. These ideas, although not particularly revolutionary in terms of policy for
Tories, in election year provided a real incentive to frustrated voters, who looked at the struggling
Wilson government whose interventionist policies were having little upswing effect on the economy.
Many see the conference as an end of consensus politics, and the start of a marathon political battle
between the two leaders. The fact that the Tories gained such publicity at Selsdon, and managed to
convince the electorate that contrasting policies to the labour government such as the move to a
more free market economy was necessary, showed Heath to be a successful leader in the outset of
his campaign.
Heath can be seen to be a successful leader due to the fact he won the 1970 election, much to Harold
Wilson's surprise. However, many would place the win not down to the

Democrats Vs Conservatives
Political ideologies in the United States vary considerably, people often classify themselves as either
adhering to positions along the political spectrum as liberals, progressive, moderate or conservative.
In the world of politics we generally decide that the Democratic Party represents the liberal ideas,
while the Republican Party commonly represents the conservatives. From the understanding of this
course we define the term American conservative as a political philosophy that emphasizes
prosperity, security and tradition above other values. Whereas liberals are also a political party that
emphasizes individualism, equality and civil rights above other values. In simpler terms stress
economic rights, whereas liberals emphasizes civil rights.
There are many differences between the American conservatives and American liberals view of
human nature. Conservatives believe that the individual Americans have a right to defend
themselves and their families with guns and that the right cannot be taken away by any methods

their counterparts, conservatives in the United States traditional favor policies that responds to

Balfour's Leadership Was Responsible for the Decline in...
Balfour's leadership was responsible for the decline in the popularity of the conservative party
between the years 1902 – 1906.
Explain why you agree or disagree with this view. ( 24 marks )
Balfour's leadership along with other key factors, including chamberlain's influence, the Boer war
and the liberal party's actions, overall led to the decline in popularity for the conservative party
giving the liberals their first taste of power in the 1906 general election.
Balfour's character consisted of a very cautious, indecisive man which came across when faced with
Chamberlain and his debate on 'tariff reform', which stated that all non–British colonies should have
to pay tariffs on imports into Britain, making foreign goods more ... Show more content on

Other unpopular acts that Balfour passed was the 1904 Licensing Act which angered non–
conformists who felt that it was just a concession to the liquor trade, which was a prime supplier of
income for the Unionists. The 1902 Education act was also unpopular as it created local schools out
of the funding from church schools, which angered Anglicans.
However, Balfour cannot be solely to blame for the decline in popularity from the Conservative
party. A key issue in the defeat of the Conservative party was Tariff reform discussed previously,
although Balfour cannot be blamed for this issue as it was Chamberlain in favour of the reform and
was the one that put it into place, therefore it was his responsibility for the split of the Conservative
party, not Balfour's.
The Conservative government looked weak at the placement of Tariff reform, which of no fault of
Balfour or the Conservatives, reunited the Liberal party after formally being split. We could explain
the result of the 1906 general election purely as a Liberal victory rather than a Conservative defeat
which Balfour had no input in, therefore cannot be blamed for the declining popularity of the

Liberal And Conservative Beliefs
After taking the self evaluation survey from StudentNewsDaily.com on liberal and conservative
beliefs, I appear to be moderate. I evaluated myself on 21 different topics under the political
spotlight and ranked myself on a scale one through ten, one being extremely liberal, and ten being
extremely conservative. My score fell in the range being neutral between both viewpoints. On some
topics I am extremely liberal, and on others I am extremely conservative.
To start are the positions I ranked myself strongly liberal on. One topic I am extremely liberal in
beliefs on is abortion. I strongly believe a women should have the right to do what they want

Finally, I believe that same–sex marriage is "the union of people who love each other" according to
the liberal position. The conservative position gives power to the state government to decide
whether to allow or ban same–sex marriage. I believe that if two people love each other, regardless
their race, religion, or gender, they should be able to decide for themselves if they want to get
married. The government has no right to infringe on people's rights to freedom and the pursuit of
happiness. If marriage makes a couple happy, they should have the right to get married. The
conservative position on this topic uses the argument that it goes against moral and religious beliefs.
In a society that is constantly changing its views on the ideal american family, more and more
people are becoming accepting of same–sex marriage. Although traditionally, same–sex marriage
was extremely frowned upon, we are a nation of progress, and should change our opinions and
develop into a nation of acceptance and new morals. Bringing religion into government as the chief
argument for a topic does not strengthen it because everyone has

How Successfully Did the Conservative Party Adapt to the...
When assessing the various intricate denouements of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods of the
British political history, one must stop and wonder about the performance of the Conservative party
as one of the protagonists of the parliamentary struggles and changing social and demographic
scenarios. By engaging in such exploration, it is almost impossible to avoid one of the most
formidable questions which might consequentially arise – was the Conservative party a deliberate
and conscious derivative of the changing political climate or merely a spontaneous chain reaction
driven by luck and circumstance? The answer to this question may be crucial for understanding the
nature of the party's success/failure. In order to explain why this very nature may be the crux of
articulating Conservative politics during these two historical periods, we will use the analogy of
Real vs. Nominal wages .
The simplest and most concise way of explaining the difference between real and nominal wages is
by providing an example. If one was to get a raise which amounts to extra 10% of the original value,
there is no guarantee that the raise will amount to a wider set of opportunities. The improvement of
one's overall financial well–being is grounded within the concept of real wage. The mere increase in
nominal wage has no implications if not adjusted for inflation. Moreover, if the inflation rate was to
exceed the percentage change of the salary, the worker would actually end up being worse off

As we know, during the pass years there have been modifications of conservative. People that are
actually conservative will always think that what they been knowledge of will not change. Also, a
conservative will want to preserve their morals. Conservative politics sometimes mix their religion
with the politics sources. It causes for their campaign to be a part of what they believe not what they
actually want to be accepted. For example, Ted Cruz has been known for one of the most
conservatives in the elections. He always is looking out for what is good for his reputation but, of
course under conservative morals. He wants to do what he believes he should do instead of going

A Conservative Revolution
A Conservative Revolution Whether the American Revolution should be viewed as a conservative or
radical movement is a hotly debated topic among historians, and each side provides a convincing
case. Historians who view the movement as radical praise the colonists' effort to send the British
crown's rule and effective implementation of a democratic government to the extent the world had
never seen before. On the other hand, historians who view the American Revolution as a
conservative movement note that Americans inherited the freest democratic society in the world, and
see the movement as an inevitable breakaway from the British crown. Due to the subtlety of change
within the government structure as a result of the preexisting democratic ... Show more content on

He maintains a strong argument that the Revolution was a democratic movement because even
though "in terms of structure [of the government]" there is "little revolutionary to be found," the
"alteration of the balance of power within the structure"7 was a radical change. He states that
previous representatives were appointed by the British government or under strict control of
political machines. However, while Jensen supports that it was radical that people could vote
representatives into power, he seems to overlook the fact that pre–Revolutionary colonists could
vote representatives into the lower houses, thus making the post Revolution an extension of this
preexisting condition. His argument is further weakened as he gives little mention to the
disenfranchised groups of people, stating that there were "other areas where change took place,"
such as in women's right to vote, but "they were just beginnings."8 While small, isolated efforts
were made for disenfranchised groups, no group received nearly as much utility from the Revolution
as white males, and many of these groups would have to continue to fight for their rights long into
the 20th century, thus proving that the American Revolution did not provide one sharp, violent
change for the population, but rather the conservative roots for efforts that would take much longer.

TO WHAT EXTENT IS THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY STILL COMMITTED TO ITS
TRADITIONAL PRINCIPLES?
Since 1979 the conservative party has undergone significant changes from the traditional
conservative party which focused on ideas about human nature, order and pragmatism, first with
new right conservatism under Thatcher then with the current conservative party. The current
conservative party however, can be seen to still be committed to its traditional conservative
principles such as Euro–scepticism and that they remain largely traditionalist. However there are
many ways in which the conservative party has changed such as taxation, education and the welfare
state.
One way the conservative party has changed is through taxation. Traditionally, the ... Show more

Another way the party has deviated from traditional conservative principles is through education. In
contrast with the traditional elitist view on education by the conservatives, under Cameron there has
been a strong emphasis on the idea that everybody should be able to go to university if their ability
allows them too, supporting labours policies on scholarships to students from disadvantaged
backgrounds and also attempting to establish more apprenticeship jobs and work experience jobs to
encourage young people who perhaps wouldn't go to university to learn skills that would provide a
better future for them. However, the fact remains that the vast majority of Cameron's conservatives
graduated from private schools which does make the overview of the party seem very elitist but, its
policies and support for scholarship programmes seem to challenge this idea and show that perhaps
the conservative party has changed from that traditional view.
Another thing that shows that the conservative party has stuck to its traditional principles is the fact
that the party is still very traditionalist. The conservative party has always been very traditionalist in
its views and in many ways it still is today, little or no comment is made on social issues such as gay
adoption, the party

Texas Conservative Definition
Conservative is defined in the Miriam–Webster's dictionary as believing in the value of established
and traditional practices in politics and society. With this definition in mind the Texas Legislature,
which represents Texas as a whole, is conservative.
Texas has historically been a Conservative State, from its admittance into the Union as a Slave State
until now. To analyze and support the claim that Texas is a conservative state, we can look to its
social stances on Gay Marriage and Abortion, the religious culture, the historical conservative
policies, and the Texas economic policies towards taxes.
Texas epitomizes the definition of a southern state and is placed in the Bible Belt of the United
States because of Texas' strong religious background which is the basis for many of the policies
enforced in Texas. As the Texas State Historical Association points out "The Catholic Church has
been a part of Texas history ever since Europeans first set foot on the land in 1528." Furthermore,
not only do Catholics make up a large percentage of Texas, as do Protestants. The strong adherence
to Christian morals and beliefs is a predominant factor in why Texas is conservative. ... Show more

Conservatism describes the disposition of people who prefer heavy state intervention in private life
and little or no state invention in the economy. Laura Stoker, a professor at the University of
California, Berkeley, created a graph (Figure 1) that separates people's political standing based on
their views of state intervention in private life and the economy (The Charles and Louise Travers
Department of Political Science University of California, Berkeley). This description allows
individuals to compare and contrast the different political views of people. However, there is more

There is not a specific enterprise faction within the conservative movement, but this exemplifies
how there is not perfect harmony. More accurately, Lichtman is revealing how the conservative
movement, through the joining of the knowledge, influence, and resources from the businesses that
invest themselves in the movement, works with the religious side's passion to form a workable base.
The first faction of the conservative movement we will analyze is the traditionalist faction. Dunn
views the traditionalists as the original leaders of the modern conservative movement. He states they
provided intellectual leadership spanning many years. This faction was horrified about the projects
to expand government, such as the New Deal and the Great Society. Looking to foreign affairs, they
were against the threat of communism (Dunn, vii). James Ceaser includes that presently
traditionalists have become "defenders of the culture" (Dunn, 23). Ceaser believes they prefer
change that comes naturally rather than change that is created and forced. In this way they aim to
"conserve" by keeping more of a status quo or what gradually evolves in politics from situations.
This seems to reveal the current situation in which a dramatic change in health care was forced upon
the American people, for disapproval continues to be greater than approval (Rasmussen Reports,
LLC). This is an example of an unnatural event that

Compare And Contrast Conservatives And Liberals
In the world of politics, there are two main political parties in the U.S. These two parties are
conservatives and liberals. Conservatives are traditionally the Republican Party while liberals are
the Democratic Party. Conservatives want to maintain the traditional values and want to conserve
existing structure. Conservatives support limited government involvement in the private sphere,
lower taxes, and free market (a disadvantage for minorities). Liberals are more "open to progress
and highly reliant in the government to solve problems" (Squadrin 4). Liberals support more active
role of government, policies to aid minorities and equal opportunity for all human beings. Both
parties have opposing views when it comes to economic, political and social issues. Conservatives
and liberals have different views when it comes to economic policies. According to Squadrin, author
of "Conservatives vs. Liberals, Liberals believe that the "government should interfere and regulate
the economy of the nation in order to protect citizens from corporate power" while conservatives
encourage a free market where "the government should not regulate the economic system of the
nation" (Squadrin 6). Free market is a system where the prices of goods are determined by the
buyers and government imposes few or no restrictions. Another example of their economic
difference is when it comes to Taxes. Even though they both support low taxes, liberals "believe that

A Study on Conservative Resurgence
Conservative Resurgence (Order #A2065848) For many years the Republican party and its
conservative base was the central point of blame for the economic woes that had occurred in
America during the Great Depression. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and his liberal Democratic party
were portrayed as the saviors of the United States' economy and the only intellectual and political
tradition that remained for America. However, the social excesses, political instability and economic
turmoil that the liberals of the late 1960's and early 1970's created, led to a resurgence in
conservative thinking. Americans began to reject the complete dependence on the government, and
the inefficiency and corruption associated with it, in favor of a more independent and politically
conservative way of thinking. As a result, 1980 saw the election of Ronald Reagan, a hard–core
conservative Republican as President of the United States. Reagan's victory over then President
Jimmy Carter signaled a distinct resurgence in conservative values and political activity. In the
1950's, Lionel Trilling, famous literary critic and writer, stated that "in the United States at this time
liberalism is not only the dominant but even the sole intellectual tradition." (McPherson, 2008, p.30)
This belief was maintained throughout the 1960's and 1970's within the American intellectual and
political community. In addition, the conservative opposition to the civil rights movement, although

How is the defeat of the conservative party in 1945 best explained ?
On the 26th July 1945, Clement Attlee lead the labour party to a landslide victory against the
conservative party, represented by wartime hero Winston Churchill. This came as a shock to the
British population, who had not anticipated this outcome. The defeat of the conservative party in
1945 can be best explained by highlighting the contrast between the people and the conservative
party, the conservatives' inability to carry out successful policies, and the strength of the labour
party.
The conservative party had been intent on encouraging the preservation of traditional cultural
values, and relied on putting the power in the hands of elected representatives rather than in the ...

Indeed the labour party had grown stronger during the coalition by promising the people reforms
once the war would be over. These ideas were promoted through effective propaganda, particularly
on the home front, which promised the nationalisation of industry, better housing, free medical
services and employment for all. On the other hand, the conservative party was not in favour of
these reforms: for instance Churchill completely ignored the Beveridge Report, a manifesto of social
reforms, and focused on conducting the war instead. These promised reforms caused the labour
party's popularity to increase as citizens hoped for a better future which in turn weakened the
conservative party. Furthermore, Churchill's confidence and unawareness of this powerful
opposition allowed the labour party to further develop. Churchill had never fallen below 78 per cent
in the approval rating in the opinion polls: consequently the prime minister did not organise his
election campaign strategy appropriately which once again allowed the opposing party to
strengthen. Thus the forceful labour party was able to win a landslide victory against the unprepared

Conservative Judaism sustains the idea in the Torah came from God, but was interpreted by humans
and contains a human element in it. Conservative Judaism generally accepts the required nature of
halakhah, but like Reconstructionist Judaism believes that the Law should adapt, taking into account
the changes in society while also remaining true to Judaism's values. Orthodox Jews believe that
God gave Moses the whole Torah, the written and oral at Mount Sinai. Modern Orthodox Jews

Libbrook is a small town in Kansas. Everyone in the town is depressed because Kansas is so boring,
and it is so flat that you can see the whole state no matter where you stand. The entire town is made
up of mostly older retired farmers and their wives, as well as some younger people simply living in

‘The main reason for conservative dominance in the years...
'The main reason for conservative dominance in the years 1951 to 1964 was labour disunity' Assess
the validity of this view. (June 2011)
Labour disunity was a huge contributing factor as to why the conservatives were able to dominate
from 1951 to 1964. However, there are also other factors that assisted conservative dominance.
Whether that be conservative strengths, good timing, the end of austerity or their handle on public
opinion, all factors contributed to the dominant years. However, how long the conservatives actually
dominated is also a question. Did they dominate for the whole period, or just part of it? The years
1962–1964 question conservative dominance and how labour reunited.
One of the major reasons why Conservatives were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Failure to exploit opportunities was also another labour problem. The 1956 sued crisis provided
labour with a great opportunity to get back on the attack. If there had been a general election in 1957
then things may have favoured labour. However, Suez did not split the conservatives and labour
were left with few targets to aim at in hoping to gain more supporters. The Labour party's inability
to counter conservative mistakes was a direct result of their disunity.
As well as labour disunity there are other factors to consider as to why conservatives dominated.
Firstly, the reorganisation of the party machine led by Lord Woolton after the dislocation caused by
the war and the shock defeat for the conservatives in 1946 proved pivotal for the conservatives in
improving their ideas (new conservatives with new ideas) and general organisation.
The conservatives recognised the extent of public approval for the legacy of the Attlee government.
Most Conservatives grasped the political realities of the time. There can be no outright rejection of
the welfare state, nor a total reversal of nationalisation. Attitudes towards industry, the trade unions
and social policy were going to have to be very different from the 1930s because the experiences of
the war years had made people far more ready to accept the need for state intervention and planning.
The post–war years had seen living standards rise, proving to be very popular

To What Extent Can the Modern Conservative Party Be...
.'To what extent can the modern conservative party be considered 'One nation'? (25 marks)
'One nation' is an idea that is based upon principles such as paternalism, and it is the name given to
describe this particular faction of the conservative party. 'One nation conservatives' is the name
given to the followers of the ideas presented by Benjamin Disrael, and the belief in changing Britain
from 'two nations' i.e the rich and the poor, and instead creating one. Benjamin Disraeli adopted one
nation conservatism for both ethical and electoral reasons. Before he became leader of the

For example David Cameron (DC) controversially changed the outlook of the conservative party
and claimed it to be 'The party of the NHS'. He also believes that state intervention within healthcare
s needed and vital, as well as being against any privatisation of the NHS. Although the contrasting
Right wing faction of the conservative party 'Thatcherities' oppose this, as Margret Thatcher reduced
the size of the state, and they believe State intervention to be negative as it took a lot of industries
out of public control and into the state. However; overall even though DC claims he is against any
privatisation of the NHS, there is a continuing growth in services being provided by private health
care companies, although I do believe that on the matter of the NHS DC has moved the conservative
party towards the centre as DC and the modern conservative party have outspent Labour on the
NHS, which is what he promised to do. Therefore to some degree the modern conservative party can
be considered more 'One nation'. Thirdly, a one nation principle is Social Duty, and an example of
DC supporting social duty is that during the 2010 election, he launched his main 'one nation' idea,
this being 'The Big Society'. This envisaged volunteers and charities taking the place of government
to carry out their social duties and responsibilities in order to improve their communities. Dc's key
argument was that the public should solve society's problems rather than the government, and

In the immediate aftermath of the election, conservative opinions on the Goldwater campaign
varied. While some praised Goldwater's efforts and held out hope for continuing conservative
momentum, others saw his defeat not only as an individual defeat, but also as the derailing of the
entire conservative movement. On the day after the election, the New York Times argued that "Barry
Goldwater not only lost the presidential election... but the conservative cause as well." This
conclusion would be later discredited by continued conservative success in the mid–term elections

The history of American conservatism reveals the diversity of the ideologies and values that
comprise the modern public philosophy. This history also reveals the fragility of the conservative
coalition. Conservatives agree primarily on the concepts that they oppose, rather than on principles
that they share. Professor James Ceaser argues that "much of the unity that exists among
conservatives stems from their shared antipathy to liberalism. It serves as the common heart that
beats in the breast of the conservative movement's diverse and often fractious components." Ceaser
provides a useful analogy for the conservative movement. The "common heart" of conservatism is
an antagonism towards liberalism that supplies the blood to the movement's four heads:
Traditionalism, Classical Libertarianism, Neoconservatism, and the Religious Right. Caesar asserts

Conservative Movement Thesis
Carter's thesis is: Although the Conservative Movement gained followers through careful
advertisement and presentation of candidates in the 20th century, their agenda was mainly aided by
racist social opinions, anti–welfare economic movements, and commercial displaying of candidates.
George Wallace (Democrat) led a social movement so angry and powerful that he forced Richard
Nixon (Republican) to learn the art of fully exploiting white voter's racial fears without running
openly racist campaigns or governing in a racist way. Since then, people with presidential
aspirations and the presidents themselves have evolved and refined these tricks into racially coded
political advertisements, slogans, and symbolically charged events. George Wallace came into
power by leading a social movement that was based on exploiting white voter's racial fears. At the
beginning, the Democrat's positions were openly racist. Wallace started exploiting white voter's
racial fears when he stated "Segregation now! Segregation tomorrow! Segregation forever!"
Eventually, talk of race came to be "coded" into politics, like issues of "welfare reform." Most
candidates in today's world would not openly incite racism.
According to the author, Nixon's plan was to capitalize on what Wallace (Democrat) had started and

Compare And Contrast Conservative And Conservative
During the late 1920's and 1930's, the government of the United States followed both conservative
and liberal policies. Conservatives policies of the 20th century were small government action and
limited regulation of the economy. Liberal policies of the 20th century were regulation of the
economy and the use of government for social welfare. The presidents during this time, Herbert
Hoover and Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR), practiced these policies during their terms. Some of
Herbert Hoover's policies followed liberal ideals and some of FDR's policies followed conservative
ideals, however; Herbert Hoover was primarily a conservative president and Franklin Roosevelt was

To What Extent Was the Period of Conservative Rule 1951-64...
This essay will examine the impact of the Conservative party during their period in office between
1951 and 1964. The assessments by historians of these thirteen years vary widely as the
Conservative rule left behind a mixed feeling about its achievements. We will therefore be
discussing to what extent their period in office can be described as "thirteen years wasted", based on
their performances in the political, economic and social sectors. When the Conservative Party came
to power in 1951, they won the election by a slim majority of 26 seats, leaving them with very little
power to make important changes. However, their number of seats increased throughout their
thirteen years in office, leaving them with a majority of 107 in the 1959 ... Show more content on

The Dig for Victory campaign reminded people of the importance of agriculture.
The Conservatives also focused on several aspects of the social sector by putting into place
important extensions to the Welfare State. These include the increase of benefits and the
implementation of the Mental Health Act which spread awareness of mental illness and increased its
social acceptance, which was a huge step towards tolerance which was ahead of its time. However
the plan to build 90 new hospitals across Britain never came into action as the Labour government
had retaken office in 1964. Despite this, the improvements in healthcare can be seen as a big success
for the Conservatives, although, yet again it can be said that they could have done much more in
their thirteen years in this sector.
Progress was also made in the area of education as 6000 new schools and 11 new universities were
constructed and many more were expanded. However their was a big debate about the merits of
comprehensive and grammar schools. The Conservatives, who supported grammar schools for most
of their time in office finally gave into the inevitable fact that comprehensive education did offer
certain advantages that grammar schools did not. The time that the Conservatives spent preventing
county councils from introducing comprehensive systems was therefore counter–productive and a
waste of time.

Should Brahm Be Considered A Conservative Or Conservative...
A controversial topic in music history is the question: Should Brahms be considered a conservative

account. In this essay I will try and explore various points of view on this topic, with reference to
musical examples, and then come to a conclusion with which argument I personally believe to be the
truest of them all. Brahms was a composer at a time of great change in the world of music. He was
at the tipping point at which the classical era was coming to an end and the romantic era was just
beginning. The composers typically considered progressives were the advocates of the Romantic
Movement; the composers who were considered conservative wanted to ... Show more content on

Brahms wanted to progress music further, but with it's foundations set strongly in the work of the
classical and baroque period composers. He wanted to, and he did, expand, develop, and
reinvigorate the classical style of music. Wagner, Liszt, and other composers were the beginning of a
new period in music. They revolutionised music and the progress they made has had an everlasting
effect. Just because Brahms was not part of this movement does not mean he did not contribute to
the progress of music. He developed Symphonies to a stage they had very rarely seen before. His
work influenced the development of future symphonies, and that is progress. Brahms managed to be
a progressive composer in a conservative form of music. So to say Brahms was both a conservative
and progressive composer is a valid opinion.

Essay about The Ten Principles of Conservatism
Conservatives believe communities can provide structure for the natural change that they believe
should be the real way of progress and that communities are capable of providing a counter force
against the concentrated power within the government (Dunn, iii). Thus, community must be near
the top in a list of fundamental conservative tenets, and community is the third in this list of ten
principles of conservatism (Dunn, iii). Conservatives believe that within the community there are
the private and voluntary organizations people can join and be a part of which can help humans
grow and flourish (Dunn, iii). This view reveals why conservatives can view the community as such
an important part in the lives of individuals.
The fourth item in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Conservatives believe citizens should think more about what they could and should do for
themselves instead of thinking about what the government could do for them (Dunn, iii–iv). The fear
is that the central government would end up controlling more and that there would be social and
moral decay (Dunn, iii–iv).
The sixth tenet of conservatism is that democracy, in the minds of conservatives, occurs within the
"context of a constitutional order carefully designed not only to limit and separate governmental
power, but also to refine democratic opinion and encourage deliberation" (Dunn, iv). Conservatives
see that the Constitution outlines precise government activity, and so conservatives are in favor of a
strict interpretation of the Constitution of the United States. This means that conservatives want
courts to interpret the law as it is written instead of making the law. That would better keep the
original intentions of the framers of the Constitution intact by keeping the tradition and natural
change instead of injecting one's own views to cause change (Dunn, iv).
Property and its ownership, according to the seventh tenet, are important because they encourage
individuals to care more about society. They care more because they have a greater investment in it
(Dunn, iv). Conservatives suggest that because individuals are tied to their community in this solid
way, there is a greater chance that they will function responsibly and desire to preserve the social
order

Ambrose Bierce quote, "Conservative, n: A statesman who is enamored of existing evils, as

The Conservative party believes that the tax in Britain is too low and should be increased. They
believe that every household should pay a proportionate amount of tax based on the amount they
receive in income. The Conservatives are looking to introduce a policy where they cut income tax
for families allowing them to keep more of the money that they earn. This will provide households
with a better chance of providing for their families as they will have more money to put towards
them. (The Conservative Party Website, 2016) The Labour Party has a very different view on the
way that the people of Britain should be taxed. They believe that British households should be taxed
more if they earn over a certain amount of money. In Labours 2015 party manifesto they claim that
they would make a fairer tax system where if people earned over £150,000 a year then they would
pay more in tax. (The Labour Party Website, 2016) This would mean that the people who earn less
would be able to keep more of their money as they would not be paying as much tax as the people
who earn more and in theory it would make the poorer wealthier. The difference between the

The Conservative Party Government Era During 1951-1964
The Conservative Party Government Era during 1951–1964 is a period which has been politically
criticized throughout the years specifically that of Britain Politics. During this time, the
Conservative government was said to have pursued mainly Keynesian economic policies which was
centrally focused on reducing inflation, to maintain growth and promote stability but despite the
Conservatives attempts to revive the Britain economy through industrialism, increase standard of
living and encouragement for consumerism there was the development of a stagnant economy which
eventually produced an increase in unemployment, inflation and interest rates for consumer products
and loans. The Labour government described the period of 1951–64 as "Thirteen Wasted Years" as
they felt that during this period Britain experienced economic chaos and turmoil. This was quite the
opposite view for that of the Conservatives, particularly Macmillan who expressed in his speech that
the people had "... never had it so good" and encouraged his supporters and opponents to "... Go

can be illustrated through how they are used in sentences or conversations. Therefore, using these

Are Conservatives Racist
The word racist has been labeled to a specific type of people. According to the Merriam Webster
racist is defined as, "a person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other
races, or who believes that a particular race is superior to another." These people have also been
classified as conservatives. The question that I present in this essay is why conservatives are seen as
racist? This question will be answered with both perspectives of the Liberals and the Conservatives.
With their inputs I can as the writer have a better understanding on this matter. The articles that I
present are very bias filled in which so I present two of the opposite opinion to balance out. The
bumper sticker that is the inspiration for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From the conservative point of view, they have stated this label of racist or bigot t has been
bestowed on them due to the Liberals. As www.thefederalists.com a news website says, "Liberals
Need Racist Foes to Vanquish." He states the liberals use the "race card" to attack conservative he
does agree with the fact there are bad people in any group and how there is the Misrepresentation of
a community, but questioned that liberals hadn't walked away from the past and all of this is
counterproductive. Which implies that conservative or the author of this article thinks liberals need
some racist enemy to fight against. Even after the post–Civil right movement. Conservatives are
convinced that liberals hold on to those events as some fuel to push their agenda. It is said that
liberals are so proud of their achievements in the Civil Rights Movement it is all they have to
combat the conservatives. Which is acknowledged, yet thought of repetitive; as stated in Why
Liberals Think Consumer Are Racist, "Everyone Hates Reruns." Many conservatives have
recognized the tragedies and Injustice during the Civil Rights Movement, but unlike the Liberals,

Liberal Or Conservative Analysis

  • 1. Liberal Or Conservative Analysis Any statement that begins with "There are two types of people..." ought to be met with criticism. People aren't that simple. But the current system of American politics undermines this, tugging at a few major core values that tend to separate people into precisely two groups: liberals and conservatives. Even the most historically beloved and supported president, Theodore Roosevelt, was denied another term upon campaigning for a third ("middle") party. Political stratification always induces disagreement, but the late trend escalades dissent to detriment. Most people would admit to knowing at least a couple of benevolent and/or intelligent people from both ends of the political spectrum. This begs the question of which side, liberal or conservative, is better. Is it more practical to be a conservative–more ethical to be a liberal? Jonathan Haidt, a renown social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He concluded that humans are born with an innate moral system, but that social environments, child–rearing, and life experiences rearrange the priorities of this innate system. Morality consists of five channels: "harm/care, fairness/reciprocity, in–group/loyalty, authority/respect, and purity/sanctity." The first two concern themselves with individual treatment, the last three concern themselves with community and order. A survey in 2008 compared individual's prioritization of these five channels with their position on the liberal/conservative spectrum. The survey revealed that liberal people value care and fairness significantly higher than they value loyalty, authority, and purity. Oddly enough, I cannot begin this sentence with "in contrast," or "conversely," because the conservative individuals valued care and fairness relatively high as well. The difference between the two is that conservative values are less stratified. Predictably, fairness is the lowest value for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Conservative Viewpoints Conservatives and liberals have completely different views of the purpose of government. Like two ends of a stick, their views are against one another although they should be the same. However, there is always a moderate position that can satisfy both extreme ends. As our title states, we should be united. My personal beliefs and ideals would be assisting me when finding the moderate views, for I'm neither a conservative nor a liberal; I believe in pleasing both ends, which, despite the stories, can be possible. The first portion of the preamble states that the purpose of government is to establish justice. While conservatives believe that justice only means punishing the criminal (Hardisty), liberals believe that justice means that society ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To conservatives, it would mean that the government would allow free use of weapons in order for the individual to protect him/herself. To liberals, it would mean that the government is there to protect the citizens, to provide protection for the individuals. Conservatives don't trust the police, as the police force is a part of the government. Similar to how liberals don't trust anyone with a weapon, seeing many homicide stories have made the headlines. As a moderate, I've done researches on how other countries control their government and I found one weapon control from Japan to be very suitable for our own use in the United States. The idea benefits both sides of the party; the common individuals are allowed to have weapons for their own protection but only when they have taken classes and pass a certain test of mental and physical health to prove their fitness. A background check is also permitted to prevent any member of criminal or extremist groups to have such weapons. Then a file is kept along with all gun owners in that area. Every few years, the individual could take their weapon to the police for inspection and any broken parts. Every few years, the individual would also retake the fitness tests to ensure they are still very able to keep the firearm. This includes to all police members as well. That would be gun control, it's not taking away a person's right to bear ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Election Of The Conservative Party Leadership What, if anything, was new about Thatcherism? The ballot for the Conservative Party Leadership on February 1975 was a turning point for the History of late 20th century politics in England. The figure of Margaret Thatcher had emerged surprisingly as the new Party leader against the incumbent Edward Heath. Thatcher's importance does not only lies on she being the first woman to lead the Conservative Party, but on the ideas and statecraft that later gave life to a new concept – Thatcherism– that marked British politics during her 11 years in command and managed to influence the future of England's politics. However, the main point of disagreement and discussion has been what was really Thatcherism and Margaret Thatcher's ideology ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She also wanted to make Britain a competitive trading nation. Furthermore, she took the ideas of the Scottish political economist Adam Smith, whom she considered the most important theorist of free trade. The Wealth of Nations (1776) advocated for removing restrictions that were aimed to advantage national good towards exterior goods. Thatcher wanted to embrace free trade as this would encourage producers and traders. Finally it would stimulate competitiveness and innovation, creating greater wealth and everyone would benefit. The result of these ideals winded up in a revolution in economic policy and three elections won by Margaret Thatcher and the Conservative Party. However there is a thin line between the fact that these ideals were not firstly hers – Victorian values, free trade, monetarism, etc. – making Thatcherism seem as a mixture of well–known goods, and the fact that Margaret Thatcher did introduced such a new statecraft that as a consequence the new 'ism' after her name continued for years after she was no longer Prime Minister. It is argued that Margaret Thatcher did not instigate this intellectual revolution and indeed it was the figure of Joseph Keith during Heath's government that initiated the spread of freedom ideas and the fight against socialism. He set up in 1974 the Centre for Policy Studies as a think–tank that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. How Successful Was Edward Heath as Leader of the... How successful was Edward Heath as leader of the Conservative Party between 1965 and 1974? Edward Heath led the conservative party through a difficult and revolutionary period in British politics from the years 1965 to 1974, punctuated by the joining of the ECC in 1973, prolonged damaging strikes, high levels of inflation, and many monumental U–turns through the period of his office. The concept of change is most notably seen right from the offset of his leadership as he was the first conservative leader to be elected democratically, by ballot, marking a turning away from the old boy network of Tory prime ministers preceding him. He himself went against tradition, coming from very humble backgrounds, having been through the grammar school ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Secondly, as Wilson faced crises in the failure of Trade Union reform and a stagnant economy, the Tories moved steadily to the right, many seeing this as a successful move by Heath. The move to the right got a massive publicity boost in Selsdon Park Hotel at a shadow cabinet meeting (January 1970) in the run–up to the election. In the public eye, the term 'Selsdon Man' (a phrase readily clutched by the media) meant a return to free enterprise –which directly contrasted Wilson's policies of interventionism – the return to the values of hard work, trade union reform and a more efficient and independent industry. These ideas, although not particularly revolutionary in terms of policy for Tories, in election year provided a real incentive to frustrated voters, who looked at the struggling Wilson government whose interventionist policies were having little upswing effect on the economy. Many see the conference as an end of consensus politics, and the start of a marathon political battle between the two leaders. The fact that the Tories gained such publicity at Selsdon, and managed to convince the electorate that contrasting policies to the labour government such as the move to a more free market economy was necessary, showed Heath to be a successful leader in the outset of his campaign. Heath can be seen to be a successful leader due to the fact he won the 1970 election, much to Harold Wilson's surprise. However, many would place the win not down to the ... • 9. Democrats Vs Conservatives Political ideologies in the United States vary considerably, people often classify themselves as either adhering to positions along the political spectrum as liberals, progressive, moderate or conservative. In the world of politics we generally decide that the Democratic Party represents the liberal ideas, while the Republican Party commonly represents the conservatives. From the understanding of this course we define the term American conservative as a political philosophy that emphasizes prosperity, security and tradition above other values. Whereas liberals are also a political party that emphasizes individualism, equality and civil rights above other values. In simpler terms stress economic rights, whereas liberals emphasizes civil rights. There are many differences between the American conservatives and American liberals view of human nature. • 11. Balfour's Leadership Was Responsible for the Decline in... Balfour's leadership was responsible for the decline in the popularity of the conservative party between the years 1902 – 1906. Explain why you agree or disagree with this view. ( 24 marks ) Balfour's leadership along with other key factors, including chamberlain's influence, the Boer war and the liberal party's actions, overall led to the decline in popularity for the conservative party giving the liberals their first taste of power in the 1906 general election. Balfour's character consisted of a very cautious, indecisive man which came across when faced with Chamberlain and his debate on 'tariff reform', which stated that all non–British colonies should have to pay tariffs on imports into Britain, making foreign goods more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Other unpopular acts that Balfour passed was the 1904 Licensing Act which angered non– conformists who felt that it was just a concession to the liquor trade, which was a prime supplier of income for the Unionists. The 1902 Education act was also unpopular as it created local schools out of the funding from church schools, which angered Anglicans. However, Balfour cannot be solely to blame for the decline in popularity from the Conservative party. A key issue in the defeat of the Conservative party was Tariff reform discussed previously, although Balfour cannot be blamed for this issue as it was Chamberlain in favour of the reform and was the one that put it into place, therefore it was his responsibility for the split of the Conservative party, not Balfour's. The Conservative government looked weak at the placement of Tariff reform, which of no fault of Balfour or the Conservatives, reunited the Liberal party after formally being split. We could explain the result of the 1906 general election purely as a Liberal victory rather than a Conservative defeat which Balfour had no input in, therefore cannot be blamed for the declining popularity of the Conservatives. My score fell in the range being neutral between both viewpoints. On some topics I am extremely liberal, and on others I am extremely conservative. To start are the positions I ranked myself strongly liberal on. One topic I am extremely liberal in beliefs on is abortion. The conservative position gives power to the state government to decide whether to allow or ban same–sex marriage. I believe that if two people love each other, regardless their race, religion, or gender, they should be able to decide for themselves if they want to get married. The government has no right to infringe on people's rights to freedom and the pursuit of happiness. If marriage makes a couple happy, they should have the right to get married. The conservative position on this topic uses the argument that it goes against moral and religious beliefs. In a society that is constantly changing its views on the ideal american family, more and more people are becoming accepting of same–sex marriage. Although traditionally, same–sex marriage was extremely frowned upon, we are a nation of progress, and should change our opinions and develop into a nation of acceptance and new morals. • 15. How Successfully Did the Conservative Party Adapt to the... When assessing the various intricate denouements of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods of the British political history, one must stop and wonder about the performance of the Conservative party as one of the protagonists of the parliamentary struggles and changing social and demographic scenarios. By engaging in such exploration, it is almost impossible to avoid one of the most formidable questions which might consequentially arise – was the Conservative party a deliberate and conscious derivative of the changing political climate or merely a spontaneous chain reaction driven by luck and circumstance? The answer to this question may be crucial for understanding the nature of the party's success/failure. In order to explain why this very nature may be the crux of articulating Conservative politics during these two historical periods, we will use the analogy of Real vs. Nominal wages . The simplest and most concise way of explaining the difference between real and nominal wages is by providing an example. If one was to get a raise which amounts to extra 10% of the original value, there is no guarantee that the raise will amount to a wider set of opportunities. The improvement of one's overall financial well–being is grounded within the concept of real wage. The mere increase in nominal wage has no implications if not adjusted for inflation. Moreover, if the inflation rate was to exceed the percentage change of the salary, the worker would actually end up being worse off ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Conservative Revolution A Conservative Revolution Whether the American Revolution should be viewed as a conservative or radical movement is a hotly debated topic among historians, and each side provides a convincing case. Historians who view the movement as radical praise the colonists' effort to send the British crown's rule and effective implementation of a democratic government to the extent the world had never seen before. On the other hand, historians who view the American Revolution as a conservative movement note that Americans inherited the freest democratic society in the world, and see the movement as an inevitable breakaway from the British crown. He maintains a strong argument that the Revolution was a democratic movement because even though "in terms of structure [of the government]" there is "little revolutionary to be found," the "alteration of the balance of power within the structure"7 was a radical change. He states that previous representatives were appointed by the British government or under strict control of political machines. However, while Jensen supports that it was radical that people could vote representatives into power, he seems to overlook the fact that pre–Revolutionary colonists could vote representatives into the lower houses, thus making the post Revolution an extension of this preexisting condition. His argument is further weakened as he gives little mention to the disenfranchised groups of people, stating that there were "other areas where change took place," such as in women's right to vote, but "they were just beginnings."8 While small, isolated efforts were made for disenfranchised groups, no group received nearly as much utility from the Revolution as white males, and many of these groups would have to continue to fight for their rights long into the 20th century, thus proving that the American Revolution did not provide one sharp, violent change for the population, but rather the conservative roots for efforts that would take much longer. Since 1979 the conservative party has undergone significant changes from the traditional conservative party which focused on ideas about human nature, order and pragmatism, first with new right conservatism under Thatcher then with the current conservative party. The current conservative party however, can be seen to still be committed to its traditional conservative principles such as Euro–scepticism and that they remain largely traditionalist. However, the fact remains that the vast majority of Cameron's conservatives graduated from private schools which does make the overview of the party seem very elitist but, its policies and support for scholarship programmes seem to challenge this idea and show that perhaps the conservative party has changed from that traditional view. Another thing that shows that the conservative party has stuck to its traditional principles is the fact that the party is still very traditionalist. With this definition in mind the Texas Legislature, which represents Texas as a whole, is conservative. Texas has historically been a Conservative State, from its admittance into the Union as a Slave State until now. To analyze and support the claim that Texas is a conservative state, we can look to its social stances on Gay Marriage and Abortion, the religious culture, the historical conservative policies, and the Texas economic policies towards taxes. Texas epitomizes the definition of a southern state and is placed in the Bible Belt of the United States because of Texas' strong religious background which is the basis for many of the policies enforced in Texas. As the Texas State Historical Association points out "The Catholic Church has been a part of Texas history ever since Europeans first set foot on the land in 1528." The first faction of the conservative movement we will analyze is the traditionalist faction. Dunn views the traditionalists as the original leaders of the modern conservative movement. He states they provided intellectual leadership spanning many years. This faction was horrified about the projects to expand government, such as the New Deal and the Great Society. Looking to foreign affairs, they were against the threat of communism (Dunn, vii). James Ceaser includes that presently traditionalists have become "defenders of the culture" (Dunn, 23). Ceaser believes they prefer change that comes naturally rather than change that is created and forced. In this way they aim to "conserve" by keeping more of a status quo or what gradually evolves in politics from situations. This seems to reveal the current situation in which a dramatic change in health care was forced upon the American people, for disapproval continues to be greater than approval (Rasmussen Reports, LLC). • 29. Compare And Contrast Conservatives And Liberals In the world of politics, there are two main political parties in the U.S. These two parties are conservatives and liberals. Conservatives are traditionally the Republican Party while liberals are the Democratic Party. Conservatives want to maintain the traditional values and want to conserve existing structure. Conservatives support limited government involvement in the private sphere, lower taxes, and free market (a disadvantage for minorities). Liberals are more "open to progress and highly reliant in the government to solve problems" (Squadrin 4). Liberals support more active role of government, policies to aid minorities and equal opportunity for all human beings. Both parties have opposing views when it comes to economic, political and social issues. Conservatives and liberals have different views when it comes to economic policies. According to Squadrin, author of "Conservatives vs. Liberals, Liberals believe that the "government should interfere and regulate the economy of the nation in order to protect citizens from corporate power" while conservatives encourage a free market where "the government should not regulate the economic system of the nation" (Squadrin 6). • 31. A Study on Conservative Resurgence Conservative Resurgence (Order #A2065848) For many years the Republican party and its conservative base was the central point of blame for the economic woes that had occurred in America during the Great Depression. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and his liberal Democratic party were portrayed as the saviors of the United States' economy and the only intellectual and political tradition that remained for America. However, the social excesses, political instability and economic turmoil that the liberals of the late 1960's and early 1970's created, led to a resurgence in conservative thinking. Americans began to reject the complete dependence on the government, and the inefficiency and corruption associated with it, in favor of a more independent and politically conservative way of thinking. As a result, 1980 saw the election of Ronald Reagan, a hard–core conservative Republican as President of the United States. Reagan's victory over then President Jimmy Carter signaled a distinct resurgence in conservative values and political activity. In the 1950's, Lionel Trilling, famous literary critic and writer, stated that "in the United States at this time liberalism is not only the dominant but even the sole intellectual tradition." (McPherson, 2008, p.30) This belief was maintained throughout the 1960's and 1970's within the American intellectual and political community. On the 26th July 1945, Clement Attlee lead the labour party to a landslide victory against the conservative party, represented by wartime hero Winston Churchill. This came as a shock to the British population, who had not anticipated this outcome. The defeat of the conservative party in 1945 can be best explained by highlighting the contrast between the people and the conservative party, the conservatives' inability to carry out successful policies, and the strength of the labour party. The conservative party had been intent on encouraging the preservation of traditional cultural values, and relied on putting the power in the hands of elected representatives rather than in the ... These ideas were promoted through effective propaganda, particularly on the home front, which promised the nationalisation of industry, better housing, free medical services and employment for all. On the other hand, the conservative party was not in favour of these reforms: for instance Churchill completely ignored the Beveridge Report, a manifesto of social reforms, and focused on conducting the war instead. These promised reforms caused the labour party's popularity to increase as citizens hoped for a better future which in turn weakened the conservative party. Furthermore, Churchill's confidence and unawareness of this powerful opposition allowed the labour party to further develop. However, there are also other factors that assisted conservative dominance. Whether that be conservative strengths, good timing, the end of austerity or their handle on public opinion, all factors contributed to the dominant years. However, Suez did not split the conservatives and labour were left with few targets to aim at in hoping to gain more supporters. The Labour party's inability to counter conservative mistakes was a direct result of their disunity. As well as labour disunity there are other factors to consider as to why conservatives dominated. Firstly, the reorganisation of the party machine led by Lord Woolton after the dislocation caused by the war and the shock defeat for the conservatives in 1946 proved pivotal for the conservatives in improving their ideas (new conservatives with new ideas) and general organisation. The conservatives recognised the extent of public approval for the legacy of the Attlee government. Most Conservatives grasped the political realities of the time. Conservative Movement Thesis Carter's thesis is: Although the Conservative Movement gained followers through careful advertisement and presentation of candidates in the 20th century, their agenda was mainly aided by racist social opinions, anti–welfare economic movements, and commercial displaying of candidates. George Wallace (Democrat) led a social movement so angry and powerful that he forced Richard Nixon (Republican) to learn the art of fully exploiting white voter's racial fears without running openly racist campaigns or governing in a racist way. Since then, people with presidential aspirations and the presidents themselves have evolved and refined these tricks into racially coded political advertisements, slogans, and symbolically charged events. George Wallace came into power by leading a social movement that was based on exploiting white voter's racial fears. At the beginning, the Democrat's positions were openly racist. Wallace started exploiting white voter's racial fears when he stated "Segregation now! Segregation tomorrow! Segregation forever!" • 51. Compare And Contrast Conservative And Conservative During the late 1920's and 1930's, the government of the United States followed both conservative and liberal policies. Conservatives policies of the 20th century were small government action and limited regulation of the economy. Liberal policies of the 20th century were regulation of the economy and the use of government for social welfare. The presidents during this time, Herbert Hoover and Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR), practiced these policies during their terms. Some of Herbert Hoover's policies followed liberal ideals and some of FDR's policies followed conservative ideals, however; Herbert Hoover was primarily a conservative president and Franklin Roosevelt was primarily a liberal president. • 53. To What Extent Was the Period of Conservative Rule 1951-64... This essay will examine the impact of the Conservative party during their period in office between 1951 and 1964. The assessments by historians of these thirteen years vary widely as the Conservative rule left behind a mixed feeling about its achievements. We will therefore be discussing to what extent their period in office can be described as "thirteen years wasted", based on their performances in the political, economic and social sectors. When the Conservative Party came to power in 1951, they won the election by a slim majority of 26 seats, leaving them with very little power to make important changes. However, their number of seats increased throughout their thirteen years in office, leaving them with a majority of 107 in the 1959 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Dig for Victory campaign reminded people of the importance of agriculture. The Conservatives also focused on several aspects of the social sector by putting into place important extensions to the Welfare State. These include the increase of benefits and the implementation of the Mental Health Act which spread awareness of mental illness and increased its social acceptance, which was a huge step towards tolerance which was ahead of its time. However the plan to build 90 new hospitals across Britain never came into action as the Labour government had retaken office in 1964. Despite this, the improvements in healthcare can be seen as a big success for the Conservatives, although, yet again it can be said that they could have done much more in their thirteen years in this sector. Progress was also made in the area of education as 6000 new schools and 11 new universities were constructed and many more were expanded. However their was a big debate about the merits of comprehensive and grammar schools. The Conservatives, who supported grammar schools for most of their time in office finally gave into the inevitable fact that comprehensive education did offer certain advantages that grammar schools did not. The time that the Conservatives spent preventing county councils from introducing comprehensive systems was therefore counter–productive and a waste of time. Last but not ... • 55. Should Brahm Be Considered A Conservative Or Conservative... A controversial topic in music history is the question: Should Brahms be considered a conservative or progressive composer? It is a difficult question to answer, with many different things to take into account. In this essay I will try and explore various points of view on this topic, with reference to musical examples, and then come to a conclusion with which argument I personally believe to be the truest of them all. Brahms was a composer at a time of great change in the world of music. He was at the tipping point at which the classical era was coming to an end and the romantic era was just beginning. The composers typically considered progressives were the advocates of the Romantic Movement; the composers who were considered conservative wanted to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Brahms wanted to progress music further, but with it's foundations set strongly in the work of the classical and baroque period composers. He wanted to, and he did, expand, develop, and reinvigorate the classical style of music. Wagner, Liszt, and other composers were the beginning of a new period in music. They revolutionised music and the progress they made has had an everlasting effect. Just because Brahms was not part of this movement does not mean he did not contribute to the progress of music. He developed Symphonies to a stage they had very rarely seen before. His work influenced the development of future symphonies, and that is progress. Brahms managed to be a progressive composer in a conservative form of music. So to say Brahms was both a conservative and progressive composer is a valid opinion. Throughout this essay I have explored the various different ways in which you can view Brahms: a misunderstood progressive, a stubborn conservative, or perhaps a progressive in a style unappreciated at the ... According to Student New Daily, conservatives, "Support legal immigration only. Oppose amnesty for those who enter the U.S. illegally" ("Conservative Vs Liberal", paragraph 12). This means that conservatives want immigrants to be a part of our great country, but do not want people who came here illegally to get citizenship. One big point is that Conservative think the borders should be secure before dealing with illegal immigrants. • 59. Essay about The Ten Principles of Conservatism Conservatives believe communities can provide structure for the natural change that they believe should be the real way of progress and that communities are capable of providing a counter force against the concentrated power within the government (Dunn, iii). Thus, community must be near the top in a list of fundamental conservative tenets, and community is the third in this list of ten principles of conservatism (Dunn, iii). Conservatives believe that within the community there are the private and voluntary organizations people can join and be a part of which can help humans grow and flourish (Dunn, iii). This view reveals why conservatives can view the community as such an important part in the lives of individuals. The fourth item in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Conservatives believe citizens should think more about what they could and should do for themselves instead of thinking about what the government could do for them (Dunn, iii–iv). The fear is that the central government would end up controlling more and that there would be social and moral decay (Dunn, iii–iv). The sixth tenet of conservatism is that democracy, in the minds of conservatives, occurs within the "context of a constitutional order carefully designed not only to limit and separate governmental power, but also to refine democratic opinion and encourage deliberation" (Dunn, iv). Conservatives see that the Constitution outlines precise government activity, and so conservatives are in favor of a strict interpretation of the Constitution of the United States. This means that conservatives want courts to interpret the law as it is written instead of making the law. That would better keep the original intentions of the framers of the Constitution intact by keeping the tradition and natural change instead of injecting one's own views to cause change (Dunn, iv). Property and its ownership, according to the seventh tenet, are important because they encourage individuals to care more about society. They care more because they have a greater investment in it (Dunn, iv). Conservatives suggest that because individuals are tied to their community in this solid way, there is a greater chance that they will function responsibly and desire to preserve the social order ... Texas Conservative Ambrose Bierce quote, "Conservative, n: A statesman who is enamored of existing evils, as distinguished from the Liberal who wishes to replace them with others" relates to the two political parties, in America. Bierce was a novel writer and based on his quote I think he was a liberal. His quote defines a conservative and a liberal in a very unsubtle way which can be misleading to some even though it is true. Texas is known as a conservative state and California is known as a liberal state. Texas has been a conservative state since 1944 and Democrats haven't been able to win it since. Two Presidents of the United States are from Texas and were from the Republican Party. Many believe that Texas became conservative when people started moving West, moving West was not a really smooth process back in the days. This takes us to the Frontier heritage when people had to cope with a lot of issues because of the move towards West. The Conservative party believes that the tax in Britain is too low and should be increased. They believe that every household should pay a proportionate amount of tax based on the amount they receive in income. The Conservatives are looking to introduce a policy where they cut income tax for families allowing them to keep more of the money that they earn. This will provide households with a better chance of providing for their families as they will have more money to put towards them. (The Conservative Party Website, 2016) The Labour Party has a very different view on the way that the people of Britain should be taxed. They believe that British households should be taxed more if they earn over a certain amount of money. In Labours 2015 party manifesto they claim that they would make a fairer tax system where if people earned over £150,000 a year then they would pay more in tax. (The Labour Party Website, 2016) This would mean that the people who earn less would be able to keep more of their money as they would not be paying as much tax as the people who earn more and in theory it would make the poorer wealthier. The difference between the Conservative Party and the Labour Party's view on tax is rather different. • 65. The Conservative Party Government Era During 1951-1964 The Conservative Party Government Era during 1951–1964 is a period which has been politically criticized throughout the years specifically that of Britain Politics. During this time, the Conservative government was said to have pursued mainly Keynesian economic policies which was centrally focused on reducing inflation, to maintain growth and promote stability but despite the Conservatives attempts to revive the Britain economy through industrialism, increase standard of living and encouragement for consumerism there was the development of a stagnant economy which eventually produced an increase in unemployment, inflation and interest rates for consumer products and loans. The Labour government described the period of 1951–64 as "Thirteen Wasted Years" as they felt that during this period Britain experienced economic chaos and turmoil. This was quite the opposite view for that of the Conservatives, particularly Macmillan who expressed in his speech that the people had "... never had it so good" and encouraged his supporters and opponents to "... The Conservative Heart Analysis Arthur Brooks' book "The Conservative Heart – How to Build a Fairer, Happier and More Prosperous America" represents a challenge to the established view of Conservatives and Republicans regarding America's social issues. While Democrats/Progressives have always provided this ongoing narrative of party who were once the champions of the underprivileged; collapsed in the 2016 elections. The Progressive message was clearly understood as "identity politics" not the champions of the underdog as promised. However, Conservatives who can provide the better solutions to poverty were tagged with a variety of labels, such as non–compassionate or out of touch.
