The Aztecs Blood And Glory Summary
The article I read is called The Aztecs: Blood and Glory: are about the Mesoamerica ancient
advanced civilization of the Aztecs used to be settled off the central highland now a modern central
Mexico. The ancient civilization lasted from 1428–1521. The Aztec become one of the most
powerful civilization from Mexico of that specific time period. Tenochtitlan is the capital of the
Aztecs and becomes the most important establishment in Middle America history. The Aztec empire
is completely ruled under one supreme ruler called a buey tlatoani. The people believed their ruler is
half–god and half–human. Interesting fact, which the ruler does not pass down the throne to the net
heir, but have to be selected from their military council that rules the royal houses.

The Colonization Of Mexico
Mestizaje is known as a process of racial and cultural blending or mixing. This was common pattern
found amongst most indigenous and Spaniards after the Spanish invasion. The Spanish invasion was
primarily a conquest driven on the need for more power and wealth, in order for the Spaniards to
achieve what they wanted they knew they were going to need to negotiate with the indigenous
people. Aside from this it was also evident that the indigenous people needed to figure out how to
survive under the rule of the Spanish even if it meant they had to give in to the Spanish's way of life.
The colonization of Mexico resulted in cultural blending of indigenous and Spanish culture,
language, and religion as an act of survival.
One of the major and more difficult goals for the Spaniards was to convert the indigenous people to
Christianity. The Indigenous religion was so strange to the Spaniards that they believed the
indigenous were not as evolved or progressed as they were. When Cortes was writing back to the
Spanish crown he dramatized the indigenous people as savages who needed to be converted to
Christianity in order to be saved. In the book Religions of Mesoamerica David Carrasco explains
how, "These beliefs and missionary efforts reflected the primary attitude of the Catholic Church that
the native peoples were "souls to be saved" in a global process of conversion" (Carrasco 21). To
achieve their goal or religious conversion the Spanish started missionaries where Franciscans

Malintzins Choices Essay

Malintzin's Choices
Malintzin had an important role in the ancient history and colonization of Latin America. She would
rise from just a simple servant girl and slave, to become one of the key factors of the Spanish
colonization of the indigenous natives in the New World. She helped translate for the Spanish
conquistadors and even Hernando Cortés himself. Malintzin's interpreting skills would prove crucial
in the dealings between Hernando Cortés and the Aztec emperor Montezuma. Camilla Townsend
uses the story of Malintzin to display the conquest of Mexico in a different aspect and first person
point of view.
It is crucial to focus on translators when it comes to understanding the conquest of Mexico. It shows

The author depicts Malintzin as a subjugation of Cortés. Malintzin used her position to help herself.
She was given away as a slave at a young age. For someone like her this was her only way to escape
poverty and make sure she was cared for by the Spanish. She used her skills to obtain a better life
than the other 19 slaves who had been given to Cortés. She was loyal to Cortés because the Spanish
had finally given her a position of power that she had never had before with the natives. "She did so
only to remind her purported masters of her loyalty" (82). She was very loyal to Cortés and in fact
loved him as she birthed his first son Martin Cortés.
Both Malintzin and the Spanish benefited from Malintzin's choices. Later on the Tlaxcala would
benefit too. Initially the Tlaxcala's and the Spanish were enemies, but eventually with the help of
Malintzin they were able to form an alliance in order to fight the Aztecs. "For having arranged with
the Tlaxcalans to provide military reinforcements (perhaps as many as five thousand)" (79). With
the aid of the Tlaxcala the Spanish where able to press on forward toward Tenochtitlan. Even though
their first attack didn't end up so well they still kept an alliance due to Malintzin that would later
prove useful. Later after the Spanish conquests, they keep their word and they didn't destroy
Tlaxcala along with the majority of other native settlements.

The Aztecs: Tenochtitlan
The Aztecs were a northern tribe that originated in Mexico in the late 13th century. They were very
advanced and had very developed and intricate social, political, and religious systems. The Aztecs
were very well known for their brutal and bloody sacrifices and architecturally beautiful capital city
of Tenochtitlan. They were also very agriculturally advanced, and used an irrigation system called
chinampas, which was very efficient because the city was located in the center of Lake Texcoco.
The Aztec empire was a very powerful, rich, and wealthy empire during 1345 and 1521 CE, until
they were invaded and overthrown by the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes and his army.

The capital city was called Tenochtitlan, which was a city–state built at the center of the beautiful
Lake Texcoco. Tenochtitlan was filled with a large number of canals, which enables people to travel
from one part of the city to the other, and also made the transportation of crops to be easier. Along
with the canals, there were lots of small islands called chinampas, which were used to grow various
crops like maize, beans, and corn. The Aztecs made their houses out of a sun–dried brick called
adobe, and were usually very compact and with little space. At its peak, the Aztec empire was
believed to be one of the largest cities of its time, with a population of about 200,000 people, the
other cities were Paris and Constantinople. The empire was a very rich and wealthy, and the
emperor, who the people called Huey Tlatoani, had lots of power and influence over its people. The

Chapter 6 Early Americas Summary
"Critical Thinking Chapter 6: Early Americas"
1. "What were the foundations of Aztec religious thought?"
The Mexica were a group that moved into the Valley of Mexico after Teotihuacan fell. Their origins
are unknown. Their original homeland was believed to be an island in a lake called Aztlan. The
name Aztec comes from their legendary homeland. They were not as sophisticated as their
neighbors and had to be alliances with stronger city–states. They were good warriors and in the
fifteenth century, they had control over most of modern Mexico. The Aztecs promoted their patron
god, Huitzilopochtli to guide the people in the kingdom. The Aztec state was authoritarian. Most of

"How advanced was the Anasazi culture in the southwestern regions of North America?"
Most Amerindian people lived by hunting or food gathering west of the Mississippi River basin.
Agriculture knowledge spread up the rivers to the Great Plains during the first millennium C.E.
Farming was practiced far west. The Anasazi culture was really advanced in the southwestern
regions of North America. An agricultural community was established by the Anasazi people from
northern New Mexico and Arizona southwestern Colorado and southern Utah. They never
discovered the wheel or used beasts of burden. However, a system of roads that caused change in
technology, products, and ideas was created by the Anasazi. The art of irrigation was mastered by
the Anasazi by the ninth century. The Anasazi expanded their productive efforts to squash and
beans. An urban center at Chaco Canyon, in southern New Mexico was also established. A walled
city with many three story roofs called pueblos was built by the Anasazi. Kivas were two large
circular chambers and community religious functions were carried out here. Hides or cotton cloth

Essay On The Aztecs
The Aztecs were a powerful civilization in early Northern America. With harsh punishments and a
strong government, they kept the civilization going for a long time. The capital of their empire was
Tenochtitlan. It was located on Lake Texcoco. The Aztecs had a very interesting religion, A strict
government, very lively citizens, and language.
Aztec religion was a very interesting part of their culture. The Aztec worshipped many gods. Such
as Quetzalcoatl, Tlaloc, Tezcatlipoca, and Huitzilopochtli. They sacrificed people to keep their gods
happy. One time they sacrificed a princess to one of their gods as his spouse. The king later came,
and, horrifically, found the priest of Aztec wearing the skin of his daughter. The king had ordered
that the Aztecs be destroyed. Chicomecoatl was the god who produced food. They had two gods of
war, Huitzilopochtli, and Coatlicue. The Aztecs also believed that when they died, in the afterlife
they would be given a job to help the gods. (Aztec Religion. aztecs.mrdonn.org)
The Aztecs had a very strict governing system. Crimes were severely punished in the Aztec society.
Some Crimes were even punished by death. Getting drunk at a young age could get you a one–way
ticket to death. Though capital punishment was common, they made sure that everyone was

Impact of the Spanish Conquest on the Aztecs. Essay example
The Aztecs, part of modern day Mexico, were once the epitome of fine culture. They began their
rule of southern and central Mexico during the 14th century and practiced an incredibly wealthy
lifestyle. Nonetheless, this rule began to deteriorate when Spanish explorers disembarked at Tabasco
and Vera Cruz on April 21st 1519. When the Spanish voyagers first arrived, they were welcomed
warmly, respectfully and received Godlike treatment. Montezuma, the ruler at that time, believed
that the Spanish military leader, Hernán Cortés, was the great god Quetzalcoatl. The Spanish took
advantage of this Aztec belief and conquered Mexico within two years. By 1521, the Aztec culture
was officially eradicated and a new culture, consisting of a ... Show more content on

Although the major government system of Mexico was maintained, some of the changes made to
the government by the Spanish included the medieval concept of hierarchy and other local habits
similar to that of Spain. The hierarchy arrangement was in the shape of a pyramid; the king, being at
the top, had the power to command changes in extensive political matters. Following the king was
the "Council of Indies", appointed by the head and acted as supporting advisors. The audiencia or
governors followed; this group included a cabinet, Supreme Court, and an appointed head that was
responsible for dealing with minor issues such as complaints, state affairs, judiciary, etc. A Town
Council or cabildo that was used was derived straight from the urban areas of Spain. The council
was comprised of a mayor, town constable, treasurer, clerk, inspector of weights and measurers,
surveyor, pageant master, etc, all of which had the title regidores meaning 'members of the Council'.
Small organized groups were established, each accountable for their own component in society,
hence the Spanish can be credited for the reformed government that allowed a smooth way of life
for the people.
In addition to the various new government concepts, new foods and animals were also introduced to
Mexico. The agricultural factors were quite different from those of the governmental, as both – the

Political And Economic Strengths Of The Inca And The Aztecs
The Mesoamerican Empires, the Inca and the Aztec, both lasted for about a century, the Aztec
Empire lasted from 1440–1521 CE and the Inca Empire from 1438–1532 CE. Migrating tribes who
settled in central Mexico formed the Aztec Empire. The Inca Empire began as one tribe that
conquered neighboring groups of people and eventually developed into a unified empire. The Aztecs
and the Incas both present political and economic strengths; however, the Incas established a
stronger empire due to advanced government and intelligent taxation techniques of imperial
administration.
The Aztecs and the Incas both unified their empires through central cities, shared language,
centralized government, national religion, and military force. These subjects all require the people in
the empires to be loyal to the emperor. By establishing a capital with one language, and one religion,
a ruler gave the members of the empire a sense of belonging and safety. This sense of belonging
unified the empire and the emperor gained the loyalty of their people. The building of Cuzco and
Tenochtitlan, the capitals of the Inca and Aztec empires, was the first step for each empire to
officially becoming an empire. Through the native languages of the Aztecs, Nahuatl, and the Incas,
Quechua, the rulers were able to communicate within the empire and form alliances with
neighboring empires. The Aztecs formed a triple–alliance with Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, and Tlacopan.
The two empires had strong centralized governments

Aztec Empire in 1519. These accounts include several texts written by surviving indigenous people
of the Aztec civilization; these perspectives truly shows the emotion, fear, and uncertainty the
Aztec's felt in depth during this time. With the accounts in our textbook and the broken spears, we

although the broken spears explain the massacre during the fiesta honoring Huitzilopochtli in great
detail in chapter eleven.
Chapter eleven in the broken spears also describes how small pox broke out in Tenochtitlan, "sores
erupted on our faces, our breasts, our bellies; we were covered with agonizing sores from head to

Tenochtitlan experienced. Traditions & encounters vaguely describes this epidemic as, "Small pox
raged though the city, killing inhabitants by the tens of thousands."5
Ten years before the arrival of the Spaniards the Aztecs experienced eight bad omens described by
Sahaguns informants. These accounts show how terrified the Aztecs were during this time,
describing how, "the natives were overcome with terror, weeping and shouting and crying out."6 In

Aztec And Spanish Similarities
Did you know that the Aztec and Spanish both had imperialist worldviews? What about that they
both had slaves? Do you even know who these groups are? The Aztec, originally known as the
Mexica, were a group of people who lived in modern day Mexico City thriving on their own from
1325 to 1519. On the other hand, the Spanish lived in the south–western part of Europe and had
been thriving for much longer than the Aztec. Although the Aztec and Spanish had some differences,
they also had many similarities in their social hierarchies. Some of these differences had to do with
their use of slavery, but they also had some common factors in their upper and lower classes.
Additionally, both groups were ruled by monarchs. Although both groups had slaves, they thought
of them and treated them differently. If you were an Aztec slave, you had rights and you could even
work your way out of slavery. On the other hand, if you were a Spanish slave, you had no rights and
your slavery was permanent. For Aztecs, your children were free and you were considered a normal
person. Basically, slavery was just a punishment. Whereas if you were a Spanish slave, your ...

same time, a king and/or queen ruled the Spanish empire. A similarity was that on both hierarchies,
the religious officials came next. This is because religion was very important to both cultures.
Nobles were ranked the same as religious officials on the Aztec hierarchy, but on the Spanish
hierarchy nobles and knights were less important than religious officials. A second similarity was
that both the Aztecs and Spanish had about 15% of their population belong to the upper class. Those

In modern literary interpretation, the correspondence of the authors intention with the meaning of
the work, is considered paramount to discerning the 'true' literary meaning of a work . E.D. Hirsch a
renowned literary critic argues that to correctly interpret a text, the interpret must consider the
author and the text's "inner" and "out horizon". To discover the inner horizon, the interpreter must
look at the culture and background of the work and author so they can understand the logic, belief
systems, and historical context that bound the work. The addition of the outer horizon allows the
reader to consider the author's intention in writing the piece. Hirsh establishes that a literary
interpretation can be considered the most probable, if the reader considers the plausibility of the
interpretation based on the context established from the text's horizon, coherence .
Schroeder extensively describes the horizon of the text as well as the horizon of the author and his
intention and evaluates her own claim with data and support.
First, she describes the inner horizon of the text with a description of Nahua culture and
background. She states the codex "adheres to annals genre", a traditional form of Nahua record

The Aztec empire thrived in Mexico from the 13th to the 16th centuries. In the early 16th century,
Spanish Conquistadors overtook the Aztecs as a part of the "Age of Exploration." Since then,
historians have struggled to define how history should remember the Aztecs. The Aztecs were a
sophisticated civilization because of their organized government, intricate religious rituals and
memorable traditions.
The Aztecs were sophisticated for their organized government. The Aztec government consisted of
strong rulers. Their prestigious rulers led them through conquests such as how their ruler, Itzcoatl
did in 1427 (doc C). Itzcoatl was a ruler who vastly contributed to the advancement of the Aztecs by
leading them in the claiming of more land. Aztecs had their own capital, Tenochtitlan. They were
cultured and their population grew to 300,000 in 1519 (doc F). The Aztecs were sophisticated
because of their rapid population growth and their strong rulers.
Secondly, the Aztecs were a sophisticated civilization because of their complex religion and
religious rituals. The Aztecs treated warriors as a royal member, leading up to the sacrifice (doc H).
This made them advanced because they organized the sacrifice and elevated warriors' status to that

child a grinding stone or small loom once they are three, is distinguishable from other civilizations.

The Roots Of Identity And Denial
What is identity? The definition as a person's own sense of whom they are, which their past defines
them. Identity is very important in our society, no matter your social status. I can attach identity to
belonging to something or a place. As a human race, we feel the need to belong to a group or place.
Because belonging to a group or place, give us the sense of identity. Countries are no exception,
their course of history and culture created a unique identity for themselves. Their cultures involves;
language, values, belief, religions, and norms that identify who we are. This has caused division and
struggles between groups or people, which influence our daily lives. Nevertheless, at the same time
makes every person or country a unique culture to learn and explore. As the article, "The Roots of

Short Essay About The Aztecs
The Aztecs were a complex civilization, I don't know much about the Aztec Civilization, I only

up playing as that civilization, and they have always made me more interested in them. What I
know, is eventually they came upon a spot with an eagle sitting on a cactus with a serpent wrapped
in it's legs, that's where Tenochtitlan would be built. Montezuma was their leader, he was fierce and
strict, but at the same time kind hearted and understanding, but nobody mistook his kindness for
weakness, except for the Spanish. The Aztecs would fight enemies and enslave the rebellions and
sacrifice them. The ones that cooperated, would have to pay tributes every few weeks though. Those
people could live a normal life, just under Aztec control. They built things called skyfarms. Those
farms were very well designed and worked in the desert setting they lived in. The Aztecs ... Show

The Broken Spears by Miguel León–Portilla is a novel of the Spanish conquest over the Aztecs in
Mexico, as told through the Aztec perspective. Each chapter displayed short stories regarding each
situation between the Aztecs and the Spaniards. Throughout this novel, the theme of terror, religion,
and greed are brought up. Although Broken Spears was written by the Aztecs, and Seven Myths was
more focused on the Spaniards, each novel ties into similar issues which are brought up throughout
each book. The first dominant theme that the Broken Spears addresses is the theme of religion. The

Fear was distributed all throughout this society when the Spaniards arrived, especially in the city's
emperor, Motecuhzoma. In chapter four, the author states how Motecuhzoma tries to leave, starting
by locking himself away. He was ineffective, cowardly, and weak. Motecuhzoma was filled with
terror and apathy.
Motecuhzoma first believed the Spanish were gods, he worshiped them. He did everything to please
the Spaniards, out out his own internal fear. "Motecuhzoma was distraught and bewildered; he was
filled with terror, not knowing what would happen to the city. The people were also terrified". This
foreshadows that the society will become overwhelmed, like their ruler.
The third theme in The Broken Spears was the immense greed of the Spanish. Chapter six describes
the Spanish attitude toward gold. "The truth is they longed and lusted for gold. Their bodies swelled
with greed, and their hunger was ravenous; they hungered like pigs for that gold". The Aztecs
describe the Spaniards as greedy, like pigs, obsessed over gold. The Spanish greed was mainly
displayed in their obsession with gold, however the Spanish were greedy in other ways. The Spanish

The Aztec empire thrived in central Mexico from the 13th to 16th centuries. In the early 16th
century, the Spanish conquistadors overtook the Aztecs as part of the "Age of Exploration." Since
then, historians have struggled to define how history should remember the Aztecs. The Aztecs were
a sophisticated civilization because of their innovative technology, complex religion, and balanced
economy. Some of the many ingenious ideas used by the Aztecs were the calendar stone and the

The Incas adopted a language called Quechuan which is still frequent in the Andes region today. The
Aztec language was called Nahuatl. These were separate and distinct language, Quechuan belonging
to the Andean–Equatorial Indian Language group while Nahuatl belonged to the Aztec–Tanoan
group. The Incas did not develop a written or symbolic glyph system of the Quechuan language to
record events but rather used the quipu, a mnemonic device of knotted cords. The Aztecs did
develop a written version of Nahuatl in the form of glyph to record time and events. With regards to
counting and measurement the Incas used a base ten system. The Aztec system of counting was
based on units of twenty.
In contrast, the Aztec empire was an alliance of three powerful city–states with each having various
periods of greater influence. The Aztec used an "uncertain" succession system in which the ruler
was selected from a pool of eligible royals. The Aztec empire was composed of over four–hundred
communities conquered by the Aztecs who were linked to the empire by the promise of paying
tribute to the Aztecs. Furthermore, these communities often retained their own leaders if the tribute
was paid. The Aztecs held power over their subjects and believed in their right to rule because they

The World Of The Aztec Empire
How was Cortes with 508 soldiers able to conquer the Aztec Empire with millions of peoples inside
its borders? Cortes was able to conquer the Aztec people for several different reasons. The Aztecs
had a very harsh tribute system that was not popular among the other peoples of Mexico. This
ferocious tribute system allowed Cortes to act as a "liberator" of some sort. Additionally, with the
Spanish came several diseases the Aztec peoples had never encountered. The spread of diseases
such as small pox and many others drastically reduced the Aztec population and sped up Cortes'
cause. Malintzin, a tribal girl given as a gift to Cortes, was helpful in translating local dialects and

As the majority of those who were sacrificed were war captives who opposed the Aztecs, they
obviously greatly feared the brutal tribute system. However not only war captives were sacrifices,
common adults and children were also sacrificed at times. Cortes himself was disgusted at the
thought of human sacrifice, this allowed him to gain Indian allies as well as gain respect among
Mexican tribes that feared and opposed the Aztecs. The majority of the population feared the
process therefore making Cortes, whom despised the process, an appealing alternative. Many
followed Cortes as they shared the same views on the 'human sacrifice ' topic. Because Cortes posed
to eliminate the Aztecs it allowed him to appear as a liberator of the tyranny of the Aztec rule.
Secondly, a relatively minor cause for Cortes ' success was the issue of disease among the Aztecs.
Although this was a fairly feeble reason it actually greatly benefited the Spanish in reducing the
Aztec population. The Spanish brought smallpox to Mexico, said to be linked to an infected slave
arriving from Spanish Cuba, which caused great suffering to the Aztecs. The Spanish were immune
to the disease so it posed no threat to Cortes ' own men. The Aztecs were demoralized by the
mysterious illness that killed Indians and spared Spaniards, as if advertising the Spaniards '
invincibility. One negative aspect for Cortes however was that his Indian allies suffered from the

Why Did The Aztecs Exist
The Aztecs are one of the best known yet one of the briefer civilizations in the Pre–Columbian era.
The phrase "Aztec" refers to the Nahuatl–speaking occupants of the Valley of Mexico or the Mexica
people of Tenochtitlan. The Aztecs originated from a place known as Aztlan. Despite contrasting
opinion of whether Aztlan exists or not, the Aztecs were said to have come from the north. Their
journey to the Valley of Mexico was shared with various other tribes. Each group arrived at different
times and the Mexica people, the Aztecs, were the last to arrive. As a result, they settled in the land
others did not want. Conflict and tension forced the group to flee from two pieces of land to what
would later be Tenochtitlan. The beginning of the Aztec ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There were those who ruled, nobles, and those who were ruled, commoners. The nobles made up
approximately five percent of the Aztecs and the commoners were the bulk of the population.
Despite the wide population gap between the two groups, the commoners were still obligated to
serve the nobles. In the highest position of power was the tlatoani, ruler of a city–state. The high
lords, tetecutin, who were in control over certain areas were next in line. Below the tetecutin, there
were pipiltin, or nobles, who were the offspring of the tlatoani and the tetecutin that could hold
positions in government. The commoners were separated into three tiers: macehualli, the free
commoners, mayeque, commoners that worked on a noble's land, and tlacotin, slaves. There were
also pochteca, merchants, that were above the commoners.
How social classes divided the population, so did the education system. Commoners and nobles
went to separate schools. The telpochcalli was the school for commoners. The students were taught
dancing and singing for rituals, history and religion, but the main focus for the boys was military
training. The calmecac was the school for the nobles and promising commoners. This school trained
the students for roles in government, priesthood and the military. Students were taught the calendar,

Religion was key component between both civilizations that I could clearly say their firm believes

According to Document B, the Aztecs made a very advanced agricultural system that used "floating
islands" as plots called Chinampas. This shows how smart they really were to take advantage of the
swampy but great soil. Then, they were able to make a food surplus and then create a civilization
with religion and other traditions. That meant without farming, they couldn't even do human
sacrifice. Also, in Document B, it states " Approximately twenty thousand acres of chinampas were

The Aztec Of Aztecs And Spanish Conquistadors
The events that occurred between the Aztecs and Spanish Conquistadors have many sides and
opportunities for debate. One of the most debated topics being; Who was more savage and who was
more Civil? Both the Aztecs and Spanish had powerful and thriving empires. These empires
displayed their dominance through their advanced technology and flourishing military. Though it
may seem that the Spanish were more advanced than the Aztecs, the Aztecs and Spanish were
actually quite close to being equal in technological advancements.
The Aztec empire has been said to be the "greatest engineers in the Americas" and rival the Roman
Empire in technology. The Aztec Empire had luxurious pyramids, temples and a gleaming capital
city called Tenochtitlan, that in its golden years, was said to house over 200,000–250,000 Aztecs.
Tenochtitlan was larger than Rome, London and Madrid put together. On top of it's large population,
the people and streets were very pristine. The Tenochtitlan citizens took daily baths to ensure they
were fully clean. Infact, Tenochtitlan had public baths and lavatories for the citizens.
Tenochtitlan was built on a lake island called Aztlan and over the lake, the Aztecs built fertile,

Spanish and Aztec Cultural Encounter
On November 8, 1519, Spanish leader, Hernan Cortes landed in modern day Mexico, bringing along
six hundred Spaniards and a lot of native allies. The Aztecs, who were natives in Mexico, welcomed
Cortez with opened arms because they believed he was one of their gods, Quetzalcoatl. From the
beginning, they were willing to share their land and wealth with the Spaniards but they Spaniards
did not want to share this land and began to continue with their plan to conquer the land.
Throughout this two–year campaign where the Spanish and Aztecs were fighting for ownership of
the land, and after thousands of people killed, the Spanish conquered the land, seizing the existence
of the Aztec Empire. This cultural encounter changed the lives of both the Aztec and Spaniards
greatly by the change in language, religion, and the benefits this take–over had on the Spanish
Empire. Once central Mexico was taken over by the Spaniards, the use of the Aztec language,
Nahuatl, was quickly put to an end. The Spaniards saw that the two different languages kept a
separation between the two cultures and decided to force everyone under the Spanish rule to speak
Spanish. Spanish is still the language spoken in Mexico even after all of the different attacks and
takeovers. The Aztec's did not like this idea of taking away their language. Most of them were
grown adults and had all they had known was

Spanish Conquest Of Aztecs Essay
Conquest of the Aztecs
The Aztecs were thriving prior to the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in 1519. Their economy
was booming and the population of their capital city, Tenochtitlan, was rising steadily. With the
population of the Aztec empire peaking to nearly five million, how did one of the world's greatest
empires crumble by 1521, a mere two years? By a massively over powered Spanish conquest? The
following reasons attributed and caused the demise of what was one of the most dominant
Mesoamerican colonies.
When the Spanish arrived in Mesoamerica, their technology was far superior to that of the native
people. Their guns, cannons and even horses where alien to both the Aztecs and their neighbouring
tribes. This technology made the Aztecs respect, and even worship the Spanish conquistadors as
gods and idols. The Aztecs didn't know how to combat these new technologies, leaving them
vulnerable. On paper, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Aztecs, having not been exposed to these illnesses before, didn't have the immune systems to
deal with the outbreaks. The Spanish and Europeans had been living with the basic man flu and
smallpox their whole lives, but when the Aztecs caught the diseases, it became deadly. The Aztec
soldiers where first to encounter the epidemic, having made close contact with the Spanish upon
their arrival. When the Aztec leader, Montezuma, allowed the conquistadors to enter Tenochtitlan
unchallenged, this contained illness became an outbreak and killed hundreds throughout
Tenochtitlan. The population and economy that once challenged that of London and Naples was
dwindling and crumbling. The great city of Tenochtitlan was collapsing and the Spanish were soon
overpowering the weakened Aztecs. But of course, the illnesses would never have spread so rapidly,
had the conquistadors not been allowed to enter the

  • 2. The Colonization Of Mexico Mestizaje is known as a process of racial and cultural blending or mixing. This was common pattern found amongst most indigenous and Spaniards after the Spanish invasion. The Spanish invasion was primarily a conquest driven on the need for more power and wealth, in order for the Spaniards to achieve what they wanted they knew they were going to need to negotiate with the indigenous people. Aside from this it was also evident that the indigenous people needed to figure out how to survive under the rule of the Spanish even if it meant they had to give in to the Spanish's way of life. The colonization of Mexico resulted in cultural blending of indigenous and Spanish culture, language, and religion as an act of survival. One of the major and more difficult goals for the Spaniards was to convert the indigenous people to Christianity. The Indigenous religion was so strange to the Spaniards that they believed the indigenous were not as evolved or progressed as they were. When Cortes was writing back to the Spanish crown he dramatized the indigenous people as savages who needed to be converted to Christianity in order to be saved. In the book Religions of Mesoamerica David Carrasco explains how, "These beliefs and missionary efforts reflected the primary attitude of the Catholic Church that the native peoples were "souls to be saved" in a global process of conversion" (Carrasco 21). To achieve their goal or religious conversion the Spanish started missionaries where Franciscans ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She would rise from just a simple servant girl and slave, to become one of the key factors of the Spanish colonization of the indigenous natives in the New World. She helped translate for the Spanish conquistadors and even Hernando Cortés himself. Malintzin's interpreting skills would prove crucial in the dealings between Hernando Cortés and the Aztec emperor Montezuma. Camilla Townsend uses the story of Malintzin to display the conquest of Mexico in a different aspect and first person point of view. It is crucial to focus on translators when it comes to understanding the conquest of Mexico. It shows how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The author depicts Malintzin as a subjugation of Cortés. Malintzin used her position to help herself. She was given away as a slave at a young age. For someone like her this was her only way to escape poverty and make sure she was cared for by the Spanish. She used her skills to obtain a better life than the other 19 slaves who had been given to Cortés. She was loyal to Cortés because the Spanish had finally given her a position of power that she had never had before with the natives. "She did so only to remind her purported masters of her loyalty" (82). She was very loyal to Cortés and in fact loved him as she birthed his first son Martin Cortés. Both Malintzin and the Spanish benefited from Malintzin's choices. Later on the Tlaxcala would benefit too. Initially the Tlaxcala's and the Spanish were enemies, but eventually with the help of Malintzin they were able to form an alliance in order to fight the Aztecs. "For having arranged with the Tlaxcalans to provide military reinforcements (perhaps as many as five thousand)" (79). With the aid of the Tlaxcala the Spanish where able to press on forward toward Tenochtitlan. Even though their first attack didn't end up so well they still kept an alliance due to Malintzin that would later prove useful. Later after the Spanish conquests, they keep their word and they didn't destroy Tlaxcala along with the majority of other native settlements. The author described the ... They began their rule of southern and central Mexico during the 14th century and practiced an incredibly wealthy lifestyle. Nonetheless, this rule began to deteriorate when Spanish explorers disembarked at Tabasco and Vera Cruz on April 21st 1519. When the Spanish voyagers first arrived, they were welcomed warmly, respectfully and received Godlike treatment. Montezuma, the ruler at that time, believed that the Spanish military leader, Hernán Cortés, was the great god Quetzalcoatl. The hierarchy arrangement was in the shape of a pyramid; the king, being at the top, had the power to command changes in extensive political matters. Following the king was the "Council of Indies", appointed by the head and acted as supporting advisors. The audiencia or governors followed; this group included a cabinet, Supreme Court, and an appointed head that was responsible for dealing with minor issues such as complaints, state affairs, judiciary, etc. A Town Council or cabildo that was used was derived straight from the urban areas of Spain. The council was comprised of a mayor, town constable, treasurer, clerk, inspector of weights and measurers, surveyor, pageant master, etc, all of which had the title regidores meaning 'members of the Council'. • 8. Political And Economic Strengths Of The Inca And The Aztecs The Mesoamerican Empires, the Inca and the Aztec, both lasted for about a century, the Aztec Empire lasted from 1440–1521 CE and the Inca Empire from 1438–1532 CE. Migrating tribes who settled in central Mexico formed the Aztec Empire. The Inca Empire began as one tribe that conquered neighboring groups of people and eventually developed into a unified empire. The Aztecs and the Incas both present political and economic strengths; however, the Incas established a stronger empire due to advanced government and intelligent taxation techniques of imperial administration. The Aztecs and the Incas both unified their empires through central cities, shared language, centralized government, national religion, and military force. These subjects all require the people in the empires to be loyal to the emperor. By establishing a capital with one language, and one religion, a ruler gave the members of the empire a sense of belonging and safety. This sense of belonging unified the empire and the emperor gained the loyalty of their people. The building of Cuzco and Tenochtitlan, the capitals of the Inca and Aztec empires, was the first step for each empire to officially becoming an empire. Through the native languages of the Aztecs, Nahuatl, and the Incas, Quechua, the rulers were able to communicate within the empire and form alliances with neighboring empires. The Aztec, originally known as the Mexica, were a group of people who lived in modern day Mexico City thriving on their own from 1325 to 1519. On the other hand, the Spanish lived in the south–western part of Europe and had been thriving for much longer than the Aztec. Although the Aztec and Spanish had some differences, they also had many similarities in their social hierarchies. Some of these differences had to do with their use of slavery, but they also had some common factors in their upper and lower classes. Additionally, both groups were ruled by monarchs. Although both groups had slaves, they thought of them and treated them differently. If you were an Aztec slave, you had rights and you could even work your way out of slavery. In modern literary interpretation, the correspondence of the authors intention with the meaning of the work, is considered paramount to discerning the 'true' literary meaning of a work . E.D. Hirsch a renowned literary critic argues that to correctly interpret a text, the interpret must consider the author and the text's "inner" and "out horizon". To discover the inner horizon, the interpreter must look at the culture and background of the work and author so they can understand the logic, belief systems, and historical context that bound the work. The addition of the outer horizon allows the reader to consider the author's intention in writing the piece. Hirsh establishes that a literary interpretation can be considered the most probable, if the reader considers the plausibility of the interpretation based on the context established from the text's horizon, coherence . Schroeder extensively describes the horizon of the text as well as the horizon of the author and his intention and evaluates her own claim with data and support. • 28. The World Of The Aztec Empire How was Cortes with 508 soldiers able to conquer the Aztec Empire with millions of peoples inside its borders? Cortes was able to conquer the Aztec people for several different reasons. The Aztecs had a very harsh tribute system that was not popular among the other peoples of Mexico. This ferocious tribute system allowed Cortes to act as a "liberator" of some sort. Additionally, with the Spanish came several diseases the Aztec peoples had never encountered. The spread of diseases such as small pox and many others drastically reduced the Aztec population and sped up Cortes' cause. Malintzin, a tribal girl given as a gift to Cortes, was helpful in translating local dialects and communicating amongst Amerindians. Also an important aspect of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the majority of those who were sacrificed were war captives who opposed the Aztecs, they obviously greatly feared the brutal tribute system. However not only war captives were sacrifices, common adults and children were also sacrificed at times. Cortes himself was disgusted at the thought of human sacrifice, this allowed him to gain Indian allies as well as gain respect among Mexican tribes that feared and opposed the Aztecs. The majority of the population feared the process therefore making Cortes, whom despised the process, an appealing alternative. Many followed Cortes as they shared the same views on the 'human sacrifice ' topic. Because Cortes posed to eliminate the Aztecs it allowed him to appear as a liberator of the tyranny of the Aztec rule. Secondly, a relatively minor cause for Cortes ' success was the issue of disease among the Aztecs. Although this was a fairly feeble reason it actually greatly benefited the Spanish in reducing the Aztec population. The Spanish brought smallpox to Mexico, said to be linked to an infected slave arriving from Spanish Cuba, which caused great suffering to the Aztecs. The Spanish were immune to the disease so it posed no threat to Cortes ' own men. The Aztecs were demoralized by the mysterious illness that killed Indians and spared Spaniards, as if advertising the Spaniards ' invincibility. One negative aspect for Cortes however was that his Indian allies suffered from the disease ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

(Voyages into World History Vol 1 3rd edition, Chapter 15, PPT slide 27) It was rare that they would sacrifice a human; it would be more common to see a goat or other animals be sacrificed. They would only sacrifice a human during a famine, war, etc. Though both empires were very stanch and devout to their religion, the Aztec had the more powerful religion. (Voyages into World History Vol 1 3rd edition, Chapter 15, PPT slide 12) Although the religion was somewhat the same, between the Inca and the Aztec the social structure was very different. The Aztecs based their social structure on a ladder of four classes: nobility, commoners, serf and slaves. The nobility and the commoners could own Land. (Voyages into World History Vol 1 3rd edition, Chapter 15, PPT slide 10&16) Serfs were members of the lowest social class. They were assigned and attached to the land owned by the nobles and required to perform labor with a certain amount of work for an amount of free time. A serf was very similar to the indentured slave, in the seventeenth to eighteenth centuries. Then there was the slave who worked on the noble's properties with no release. (Voyages into World History Vol 1 3rd edition, Chapter 15, p. 485) In contrast, the Inca social structure was based on equality. • 32. Why Did The Aztecs Exist The Aztecs are one of the best known yet one of the briefer civilizations in the Pre–Columbian era. The phrase "Aztec" refers to the Nahuatl–speaking occupants of the Valley of Mexico or the Mexica people of Tenochtitlan. The Aztecs originated from a place known as Aztlan. Despite contrasting opinion of whether Aztlan exists or not, the Aztecs were said to have come from the north. Their journey to the Valley of Mexico was shared with various other tribes. Each group arrived at different times and the Mexica people, the Aztecs, were the last to arrive. As a result, they settled in the land others did not want. Conflict and tension forced the group to flee from two pieces of land to what would later be Tenochtitlan. The beginning of the Aztec ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite the wide population gap between the two groups, the commoners were still obligated to serve the nobles. In the highest position of power was the tlatoani, ruler of a city–state. The high lords, tetecutin, who were in control over certain areas were next in line. Below the tetecutin, there were pipiltin, or nobles, who were the offspring of the tlatoani and the tetecutin that could hold positions in government. The commoners were separated into three tiers: macehualli, the free commoners, mayeque, commoners that worked on a noble's land, and tlacotin, slaves. There were also pochteca, merchants, that were above the commoners. How social classes divided the population, so did the education system. Commoners and nobles went to separate schools. The telpochcalli was the school for commoners. The students were taught dancing and singing for rituals, history and religion, but the main focus for the boys was military training. The calmecac was the school for the nobles and promising commoners. This school trained the students for roles in government, priesthood and the military. • 33. Similarities And Differences Of The Inca And Aztec Empires Throughout the previous time, pre–European civilizations in the Americas, the Aztec and Inca empires were separate and distinct civilizations. The two civilizations stayed with no question very progressed and had their own intricated but very efficient society. Polytheism (who beliefs in multiple gods) dominated both empires. They adored ideals broadly and fascinatingly, the Sun God maintained the high place in mutually civilizations. However, both civilizations shared some similarities, there were remarkable differences among the two empires. These contrasts and similarities could be observed in many significant ways. Religion was key component between both civilizations that I could clearly say their firm believes in their lords. For instance, both empires needed human sacrifices to sustain living, they both accumulated many temples in which they offered presents and sacrifices to their lords, and they both had feasts where they expressed their generosity to their admired lords. The Inca and Aztec Empire were quite different too when it was about their religion. The Inca for example prayed the sun god Inti in a representative manner with ceremonies in temples. The Aztecs thought the Sun would only stay awake if it established the most valued thing they had, which was human lifeblood. They scarified chiliad of people a year and presented them often. It was very occasional for the Inca. The Inca and Aztec empires were very similar. They were based on managing resources and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to Document B, the Aztecs made a very advanced agricultural system that used "floating islands" as plots called Chinampas. This shows how smart they really were to take advantage of the swampy but great soil. Then, they were able to make a food surplus and then create a civilization with religion and other traditions. That meant without farming, they couldn't even do human sacrifice. Also, in Document B, it states " Approximately twenty thousand acres of chinampas were constructed [around Tenochtitlan] and the yield from them was high: four corn crops were possible. This shows how agriculturally advanced the Aztecs were, when the Spanish arrived in the 1500's, the Spanish could only receive three corn crops per year unlike the Aztecs. Although, the Aztecs were able to make their system of chinampas centuries before the Spanish came. The Spanish then invaded the Aztecs Document C also shows very interesting information as well. IN document C, it states " THe men at the right plant and harvest the maize, while the women on the left grind and roll it into tortillas. Behind them, there is a person dressed as a corn goddess." This shows the importance of the agriculture to the Aztecs and how they are working so hard at it. They also pray to the goddesses, who would supposedly give them good luck during farming. One of the most debated topics being; Who was more savage and who was more Civil? Both the Aztecs and Spanish had powerful and thriving empires. These empires displayed their dominance through their advanced technology and flourishing military. Though it may seem that the Spanish were more advanced than the Aztecs, the Aztecs and Spanish were actually quite close to being equal in technological advancements. The Aztec empire has been said to be the "greatest engineers in the Americas" and rival the Roman Empire in technology. The Aztec Empire had luxurious pyramids, temples and a gleaming capital city called Tenochtitlan, that in its golden years, was said to house over 200,000–250,000 Aztecs. Tenochtitlan was larger than Rome, London and Madrid put together. On top of it's large population, the people and streets were very pristine. The Tenochtitlan citizens took daily baths to ensure they were fully clean. Infact, Tenochtitlan had public baths and lavatories for the citizens. Tenochtitlan was built on a lake island called Aztlan and over the lake, the Aztecs built fertile, floating farms called "Chinampas".The people who inhabited the Aztlan Island were originally called the Mexica people. Spanish And Aztec Cultural Encounter Reagan Black HIST 1312 02 Dr. Christopher Richmann April 10, 2016 Spanish and Aztec Cultural Encounter On November 8, 1519, Spanish leader, Hernan Cortes landed in modern day Mexico, bringing along six hundred Spaniards and a lot of native allies. The Aztecs, who were natives in Mexico, welcomed Cortez with opened arms because they believed he was one of their gods, Quetzalcoatl. From the beginning, they were willing to share their land and wealth with the Spaniards but they Spaniards did not want to share this land and began to continue with their plan to conquer the land. Throughout this two–year campaign where the Spanish and Aztecs were fighting for ownership of the land, and after thousands of people killed, the Spanish conquered the land, seizing the existence of the Aztec Empire. This cultural encounter changed the lives of both the Aztec and Spaniards greatly by the change in language, religion, and the benefits this take–over had on the Spanish Empire. Once central Mexico was taken over by the Spaniards, the use of the Aztec language, Nahuatl, was quickly put to an end. The Spaniards saw that the two different languages kept a separation between the two cultures and decided to force everyone under the Spanish rule to speak Spanish. When the Spanish arrived in Mesoamerica, their technology was far superior to that of the native people. Their guns, cannons and even horses where alien to both the Aztecs and their neighbouring tribes.
