Genesis: Chapters 11–20
Chapter 11
Characters:LORD, the family tree of Shem
Main Theme(s):This chapter shows the family tree of Shem to Abram.
Major Events/Teachings:This chapter talks about the family from Shem's family all the way to Abram, which is the son of Terah. The chapter ends
with the wife of Abram, Sarai, having no children and how they traveled from Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan. Once they got to Canaan, they
settled there and lived there.
Impressions:I do not know what to think about chapter 11 of the book of Genesis. This is so because the entire chapter is a long family line that
starts with Shem and goes all the way to Abram. It also talks about the family of Abram, such as his wife, Sarai, and how she could not... Show more

Abram allows Lot to give his choice of the nation, and he choses to live in the nation of Sodom. At the same time, God is fulfilling his covenant that He
made with Abram, who moved to Hebron.
Chapter 14
Characters:Abram, Melchizedek, God, and Lot
Main Theme(s):Abram saves Lot's life.
Major Events/Teachings:In this chapter, there was a battle between all of the kings of the nations and Lot is arrested an put in prison. The people of
Canaan invaded Sodom. Melchizedek eventually blesses Abram in the name of the Lord. Abram finds stolen goods and returns them to the town.
Impressions:My impression of this chapter is that the kingdom arrested Lot and stole all of his valuable goods. Abram is being brave enough to
release Lot and find the stolen goods and return them to the people. The battle between the kings made a point in Israel's history.
Chapter 15
Characters:God and Abram
Main Theme(s):God makes a promise to Abram to bring a sign that He is

The Bible And Of The Pentateuch
Genesis Genesis is the first book of the Holy Bible and of the Pentateuch, which is more commonly referred to as the Law. Literary Genre: Narrative
Dates and Authorship: Although, the author is never named it has been accepted that the book was written by Moses. The book was most likely
written during the year that Moses spent at Mount Sinai where he wrote the books of Exodus and Leviticus, 1446–1445 B.C. (DeCanio, 2010) Key
themes: God and Creation, (Genesis 1–2) God and Judgement, (Genesis 3:8–19, Genesis 4:9–15) Relationship between God and humanity, (Genesis
3:15, Genesis 12:3, Genesis 22:18) Fall of Man, (Genesis 3:22) and Divine Judgement by God (Genesis 3:14–19, Genesis 4:9–15).(DeCanio, 2010)
Purpose: The book of Genesis's purpose is to describe the building blocks of a theocracy that God created with mankind. Moses had to present and
explain that from the very beginning, God had a divine plan for his people. This is why Moses goes into a detailed account of how the earth and
mankind was created because it is important to realize that the same God who created us is the same God calling Abraham, later in the book of
Genesis. Major Events: The creation of the world and of man who was made in God's image to have a personal relationship with God and to rule over
the world God had created. (Genesis 1:26–28) The fall of man into sin and the divine judgement by God. (Genesis 3:1–13) God's promise to Abraham
to bless him and all of his descendants and all of the other

The Hebrew Empire: The Abrahamic Religion
Hebrew is the likely oldest religious tradition still practiced today. While the Hebrew empire was weak by comparison to their contemporaries, it has
stood the test of time.
Hebrew is the major foundation for other Abrahamic religions such as Christianity and Islam; and Hebrew has been a major force in shaping the world.
The term "Abrahamic religion" refers to Abraham being considered the founder of the Hebrew people.
During their 4000–year history, the Hebrew people have experienced the likes of slavery, conquest, occupation, and exile; they have been in contact
with, and influenced by ancient cultures like the Egyptians, Babylonians, and Persians. One of the main ideas that set Hebrews apart at the time was
Monotheism. "Their early contribution to humankind was not wealthy empires or groundbreaking technology. Rather, it was the revolutionary idea that
there was only one god. This one Hebrew god was called Yahweh. "
Not only did Hebrews believe in only one God, they also held Him as an omniscient and omnipotent God. They ... Show more content on

Not only were these Gods limited to their own domain, they showed cruelty and treated humans as playthings. To the Hebrews, God is unlimited and
cares for His creations. The religion is rooted in the belief of a deity who was just and merciful. The Hebrews singular God was just and merciful, but
demanded moral behavior from humans.
Based on the telling of Abraham in the Torah, the Hebrew's monotheistic beliefs stem from the death of Abraham's father. Upon the death of Terah,
Yahweh (God) came to Abraham and instructed him to smash his father's idols, put his full belief in Yahweh and move his remaining family to
Canaan. The Land of Canaan is believed to be what is current day Israel. Yahweh promised Abraham that he would found a great nation here and
dubbed it "The Land of Milk and

The Religion Of The Nation Of Israel
Abram, a pagan gentile called from a pagan land and culture, became the patriarch of the Nation of Israel. Moreover, through God's covenant with him
his numerous descendants inherited Palestine and from them came Messiah, the blessing to all peoples on earth. Understanding the culture of Ur of the
Chaldeans, Abram's place of origin, requires a determination of where this area was located and analyzing archaeological discoveries of that area in
conjunction with other disciplines of biblical study.
About 1800 B.C. Abram's father, Terah, took his family and left Ur for Canaan but settled in Haran where Terah died. Haran was located in the
southern part of modern–day Turkey. After his father's death, Abram was called by God to continue his journey to the land of Canaan and he was
called from, "Ur of the Chaldeans." Abraham's call from this pagan culture further affirms that God is both merciful and gracious as well as sovereign
over the affairs of mankind.
Ur of the Chaldeans is the first reference to the city in the biblical narrative with regards to Abram's city of origin. Abram's brother, Haran, died in Ur
before Terah, Abram's and Haran's father, took the family to the city of Haran, a well–known stop along trade routes in Mesopotamia. The exact location
of where the ancient city of Ur was located is debatable.
Prior to an 1849 excavation–by Sir. W.K. Loftus–of a site located in modern–day southern Iraq, most scholars placed Ur in the north based on the
biblical narrative

Jesus Christ Research Paper
Jesus Christ was born during the reign of Herod the Great who ruled over Palestine at the end of the first century B.C. on the twenty–fifth of December,
which is celebrated by Christians every year in honor of the day the Son of God was born to bring eternal salvation to all. Jesus was born in the city
of Bethlehem in Judea by the Virgin Mary in a stable. Joseph was the earthly father of Jesus. During this time Herod was bothered by the birth of
Jesus because he heard a new king had been born. Herod became frantic and sent his soldiers to Bethlehem to kill all the boys under the age of two.
Joseph and Mary fled to Egypt before the soldiers could reach them. When Herod died and all settled, Joseph and Mary went to Galilee and settled in a

Then he said, 'Here I am, I have to do your will. 'He sets aside the first to establish the second. And by that will, we have been made holy through the

who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, 'The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone, 'A stone that causes
people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.' "They stumble because they disobey the message which is also what they were destined for." (Peter
2:7–8) Christ's ministry would begin in Galilee. "When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee. Leaving Nazareth, he

Number 36 In The Hebrew Bible
Numbers 36
Throughout the Hebrew Bible, doublets (identical duplicative stories in the same text) are a common occurrence. These parallels create confusion
for the readers who may wonder why these stories are reiterated and, often times, why are they placed so close together. Is it merely happenstance or
is it done purposefully? This is a main point of interest that arises from the story of Numbers 36, which appears to mirror the content of the earlier
Chapter 27. The question raised concerning this final chapter is why this text is placed here and not where the original story is presented in Chapter
27; the placement of Numbers 36 at the end of the book does not fit contextually considering its subject matter.
The book of Numbers is a detailed narrative history of the 40 years of wandering that the Israelites spent in the desert following their deliverance from
Egypt. Chapter 27:1 –11 recounts a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The heads of the tribe of Manasseh responded to the Lord's ruling, challenging that if the daughters marry outside of the clan, then would the
inheritance not go to their husbands. This would mean that the inheritance would be out of the family and defeat the purpose of the previous injunction.
The Lord saw that their objection was justified and declared that the heiresses must marry within their tribe and family. In accordance with this, the
daughters married their first cousins on their father's side to maintain the family's inheritance.
Although there is no problem within the content of the chapter, it is baffling why Chapter 36 was placed here instead of where it would fit
contextually, following Chapter 27:1–11. Why was it placed at the end of the book altogether? Plausible answers to this chapter's placement may be
that: the book was written chronologically, was written to reflect genealogical interest, or was composed as an addendum for the earlier passage in

How Did Noah Survived?
Last time, we learned that after Adam and Eve left Eden, people became increasingly evil until God had to clean up the Earth by washing it with water.
Who survived the flood? Noah survived. How did he survive? Noah lived through the flood by building an ark, a really big boat. Remember how I said
God wanted to get rid of evil in the world by washing it with water? Do you think it worked? Well, today we are going to read about a family that lived
about 850 years after the great flood. Through their lives, we will see if evil, which we call sin, is still on the earth. Read Genesis 11:27–32. So, we
have Abram, his wife Sarai, and his nephew, Lot. They were from Ur but were living in Haran with Abram's father, Terah. Read Genesis 12:1

Let's see where God led him. Read Genesis 12:5–9. Because Abram listened to God, God appeared to him again and promised to give Abram an entire
country! In thanks, Abram built an altar and worshipped God. Read Genesis 12:10. A famine is a time when food won't grow. In those days, a
person couldn't drive to a grocery store; he had to buy food from farmers. But if the food wouldn't grow, there was nothing for him to buy! So what
did Abram do? Did he trust God to feed him? No! He left the land God had promised him and went into Egypt. Do you think this was a wise choice?
Let's see what happened. Read Genesis 12:11–13. Abram was afraid someone would murder him and take away Sarai. Abram thought that if people
believed they were siblings, no one would kill Abram; they would just take Sarai away. Abram thought it was better to give up his wife than risk
his life. What do you think about his actions? He didn't trust God to give him food or keep him from harm, so he decided to try and keep himself safe
by lying. This was a bad decision. Let's read. Read Genesis 12:14–20. Does anyone remember who Pharaoh is? Pharaoh is the king of Egypt. Like we
have a president, they had a Pharaoh. This is just a title, and not the same Pharaoh who we learned about earlier. This Pharaoh lived 400 years before the

The General History Of Ancient Mesopotamia
MRS 101: The general history of ancient Mesopotamia: people groups, culture, and religion
Situated in the Tigris Euphrates valley was the property of Mesopotamia. It was here that the first cities in the world were founded between 4000 –
3500 BC from the Sumerian people. They developed their very own belief system, using various goddesses and gods. They developed rites and
spiritual practices for worshiping these strong deities. Their daily lives were also much different than those of the last hunter gatherer groups that
roamed over the world in a continuous hunt for resources. (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2014)
In addition they believed in devils made by the gods that could be bad or good. People of Mesopotamia worshiped these other worldly beings to
maintain the beings joyful, because if the people of Mesopotamia were angered would, for that unhappiness, be penalized somehow. Each city had
its own patron deity, a number of which were linked to livings that are specialized. There were also goddess and gods, the rulers of the skies,
atmosphere, and much more, which received more interest from worshipers. To worship goddesses and the gods, the people of Mesopotamia
constructed big constructions, called Ziggurats that functioned as temples. In the worshiping part of the Ziggurat carved stone would be placed by
individual figures with clasped hands and wide eyes, praying for the people of Mesopotamia. This region was also where people could make the deities

The Testament Of Abraham 's Story At The Beginning Of Genesis
Although the Bible was written thousands of years ago, the lessons expressed by God are just as relevant in today's world. The Bible, specifically the
Book of Genesis, consists of stories that seem outdated, however, these stories illustrate moral lessons that will always be applicable in life. The most
prominent lesson is that people must have faith in God in order to trust Him with all of their heart. Particular instances from the lives of Abraham and
Joseph provide reasons to believe God is always trustworthy. In the Abraham's story at the beginning of Genesis, God speaks directly to his people
and they are able to speak directly back; by the time of Joseph's life, God's presence is less obvious and requires more blind faith. These timeless
messages emphasize that all of God's promises are certain and that his followers must grow to faithfully trust Him.
The story of Abraham gives followers reason to believe that God's promises are absolute. Abraham's biblical story follows the pattern of God testing
his followers' faith, blessing them and forming a binding covenant with them. Abraham's story of his faithful journey begins with God saying to him,
"Leave your country, your kindred and your father's house for a country which I shall show you; and I shall make you a great nation, I shall bless
you and make your name famous; you are to be a blessing!" (Genesis 12:1–3) Motivated by God's offer of fame and fortune, Abraham left his home in
Haran and headed to Canaan with his

Christianity And The Jewish Religion
Christianity In the initial decades of the Roman Empire, at the eastern end of the Mediterranean, a new religion, Christianity, emerged. Much of the
impetus for this new religion rested in issues in the Jewish religion, including a long–standing belief in the coming of a Messiah and rigidities that had
developed in the Jewish priesthood. Whether or not Christianity was created by God, as Christians believe, the early stages of the religion focused on
cleansing the Jewish religion of stiff rituals and haughty leaders. It had little at first to do with Roman culture. Christianity arose in a remote province
and appealed particularly to the poorer classes. It is not easy, as a result, to fit Christianity neatly into the patterns of Roman history: It was deliberately
separate, and only gradually had wider impact.(Robert A. Guisepi) Symbol The Christian cross has traditionally been a symbol representing
Christianity or Christendom as a whole. The Christian cross was in use from the time of early Christianity, but it remained less prominent than
competing symbols (Ichthys, Staurogram, Alpha and Omega, Christogram, Labarum, etc.) until the medieval Crusades. Early Christianity had use for
such symbols due to the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire, as the symbol allowed inconspicuous identification of one Christian to
another.(2016, Wikipedia) Druze Faith The Druze, also known as the "Sons of Grace," are a secretive, tightly–knit religious sect whose origins can be

Abram The Promised Land
The story of the promised land began the day God approached Abram, now known as Abraham, the father of many. From Abraham came his
descendants Isaac, Esau, Jacob, his twelve sons, and the Israelites whom all played a key role in the fulfilment of the promised land. The fulfilment of
the promised land all began when Terah, father of Abraham, set out from Ur to Canaan– stopping in Haran on the way. While in Haran, the Lord said to
Abram, "go forth from your land, your relatives, and from your father's house to a land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation and I
will bless you...All the families of the earth will find blessing in you" (The Catholic Study Bible, Genesis 12:1–3). Abraham did as the Lord said and

During this time, a new King came to power and the Israelites were forced into slavery and harsh labor. The new Pharaoh also demanded that baby
boys were to be thrown in the Nile and baby girls can live. However, a levite woman went against this rule and placed her precious baby in a basket
and let him float down the river until the Pharaoh's daughter found him, named him Moses, and took the baby home. As Moses grew up he
noticed the unfair treatment of the Israelites and fled the area. Years later, Moses was called by God through a burning bush; the Lord told Moses
to help his people escape Egypt and slavery. Moses obeyed the Lord and went to the Pharaoh demanding him to stop the cruel treatment at once and
to listen to how God feels. Moses is the, "leader of the Israelites In their exodus from Egypt and the mediator in their covenant with Yahweh"

Egypt were a punishment to the Pharaoh from God and until the Israelites were set free, the Plagues would continue. After the death of the firstborn
plague, the Pharaoh gave permission to Moses to take his people and serve the Lord as he said. The Israelites finally departed Egypt and set out for

Abraham's Beliefs
Abraham was one of the most important names in the Bible. As the father of Israel, he was very important. According to the Holman Bible
Dictionary, " His personal name meant "father of a multitude." The first Hebrew patriarch, he became known as the prime example of faith. He was
the son of Terah, a descendant of Noah's son, Shem. (Genesis 11:27 ). His childhood was spent in Ur of the Chaldees, a prominent Sumerian city. He
was known at the beginning as Abram ("father is exalted"), but this was changed subsequently to Abraham ("father of a multitude") (Genesis 17:5 )."
Abraham's life was long and troubled. He was always faithful to God, even when his faith was tested. "Sarai, whose name had been changed to Sarah
("princess"), had her long–promised son, Isaac ("laughter"), when Abraham was 100 years old. Ishmael's presence caused trouble in the family, and
he was expelled with his mother Hagar to the wilderness of Paran. Abraham's faith and obedience were tested by God in Moriah when he was
commanded to sacrifice Isaac. God provided an alternative sacrifice, however, saving the boy's life. As a reward for Abraham's faithfulness, God
renewed the covenant promises of great blessing and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Montejano, David. Quixote's Soldiers: A Local History of the Chicano Movement, 1966–1981. Austin: University of Texas Press, 2010.
Book Review The book "Quixote's Soldiers," by David Montejano was written in clarity to describe and inform readers the injustice the Mexican
Americans endured during the mid 1960s through the early 1980s in which they successfully battled for, "a new and more representative political
order." The following critique of "Quixote's Soldiers," includes how the Chicano Movement was introduced, the author's purpose and interpretations,
and the overall successes and weaknesses of the book. Montejano's book on the local history of the Chicano movement zeros in on the city of San

For example, "In a society marked by class and racial–ethnic segregation, appeals to either class or race had the potential to mobilize the Mexican

was however, part of the movement as a child and grew up in and around the poor, working–class. He says in his book he said he lived down the block
from the Menchaca Courts and as adolescents he and his siblings had a few run in with rock throwing and insults from the pachucos (6). He could
not sympathize on the side of the "gringos" since he did face the adversities of living in the west side of town. Also, his primary accounts are for the
most part from the side of the Chicano's who endured the challenges and how they felt during the movement. If it wasn't biased, then he would have
included an equal number of primary sources from the Anglo's point of view of the Chicano movement but he

Abram Summary And Analysis
During these chapters nine generations of Shem's descendants, the Semites pass through. In the beginning of these chapters God calls on Abram,
who is living with his father Terah and his wife Sarai on Haran. God makes a covenant with Abram, promising to make Abrams's descendants into a
great nation. Abram agrees to leave is home and move southwest to Canaan with his wife and his nephew, Lot, to a land that God has promised to
give to Abram's descendants. Abram takes up residence there and erects a number of altars throughout the land as symbols of his devotion to God.
After then a short stay in Egypt, Abram becomes wealthy and returns to Canaan, where, with the help of 318 men, he defeats a legion of pillaging
armies from the East that has descended upon Sodom, where Loot is currently living. The king of Sodom recognizes Abram for his great deed, and the...

Abraham Research Paper
Abraham demonstrates unwavering trust and obedience to God throughout the latter part of his life and develops into a great portrayal of biblical
faith. The biblical definition of faith is, "A loving trust, calculated risk, and an ongoing process with seasons of darkness and doubt." (Fairchild)
Abraham chooses to follow God willingly and without hesitation in spite of the extremity of God's instructions. The blessings God bestows upon
Abraham are immeasurable compared to His commands. Abraham's seed of faith is planted and begins to grow when he residing comes to know God
while in Haran with his father Terah, his nephew Lot, and his wife Sarah. When Abraham is seventy–five years of age God reveals his plan to Abraham
and tells him:
Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will how you. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless
you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on

What Was Abraham Lincoln's Childhood
To begin with, in the words of Abraham Lincoln, "I walk slowly, but I never walk backward.Abraham Lincoln was an American Abolitionist. He had
a hard childhood, he helped end slavery, and he was a President. Thanks to Lincoln, America is really, the land of the free and the home of the brave.
As a starting point, Abraham Lincoln had a tough childhood and probably never guess what his childhood would be like. Lincoln was born February

Lincoln fought in the civil war to end slavery. The civil war lasted from April 12, 1861 to May 9, 1865. Their first battle was the Battle of Fort Sumter
and there last battle was the Battle of Palmito Ranch. Another decision Lincoln made, was signing the Emancipation Proclamation. "It stipulated that if
the Southern states did not cease their rebellion by January 1st, 1863, the Proclamation would go into effect," (civilwar.org,pg.1,par.1). Thanks to these
decisions Lincoln made slaves might have still been around today. In the final analysis, Abraham Lincoln's choices had a true effect on the U.S. Due to
everything Lincoln did a lot of things happened. After winning the civil war, Lincoln made it so the southern states may not own slaves. He made all
slaves in the U.S., citizens and he sent back and slaves that want to go back to Africa. Also, by signing the Emancipation Proclamation it gave
African–Americans rights in the U.S. It also stated that slavery in the U.S. would be now to be illegal. Many were upset about these changes, but

Avram Research Paper
According to traditional Old Testament historians, Abraham became the first human to establish a covenant with God and with his second son Isaac
and grandson Jacob they became the first of three Patriarchs of Judaism and Christianity. Abraham, original name Abram or Avram, along with his wife
Sarah, original name Sarai, became the "Father of the Multitudes and Father of the Israelites." Sarah's hand–maiden Hagar, gave birth to Abraham's
first son Ishmael who later became a prominent prophet and patriarch of the Islamic faith. Depending on which biblical family tree you read, Abram
was the tenth or eleventh generation of Noah and born in the city of Ur of Babylonia. According to biblical chronology Abram dies when he is 175

A few days later Abram circumcisesIsaac and establishes another covenant with God and it is at this time when Abram's name becomes Abraham
and Sarai's name becomes Sarah. Taken from Genesis 11:26, by the Redactor source, which tells that Abraham's father, Terah, is 70 years old
when Abraham is born. Continue with Genesis 11:31, by the Priestly and Redactor sources, Terah takes Abraham, Sarah and Lot along with all of
their household to Haran to live. Taken from Genesis 11:32, by the Redactor source, Abraham's father dies while they all are still living in Haran at the
age 205 years of age. According to the previous three verses Terah was 70 years old when Abraham was born and died when he was 205 years old.
Doing the math Terah is 205 years of age when he dies– 70 years of age when Abraham was born, which makes Abraham 135 years old when his
father died and they all are still in Haran. Next is Genesis 12:1, by the Jahwist source, when God tells Abraham to leave Haran and move to Egypt,
then in Genesis 12:4, by the Jahwist and Priestly sources, Abraham is 70 years of age when he begins his travels to

And, if you become so frustrated that you threaten, insult, mock, or hit us, that won't do, either. Not only are you being abusive, you are now

Body
Exegesis Abram was a man of seventy five years when we received his call. The readers are introduced to the call of Abram who at that time was called
by this name.
The text comes after the story of creation in Genesis, and before the destruction of Sodom and Gomorra. The book of Genesis is said to belong to
"many different traditions," and therefore, is said to be a narrative. This book is a collection of oral and written records.
Genesis 3 records mankind's disobedience to God which was eating the forbidden fruit. Genesis 4 mentions about Cain killing his brother Abel, another
act of disobedience that he should not have chosen to be a part of. Later in Genesis 5, we read about humankind's sins and the story of the flood that
took place in Noah's time. Further, Genesis mentions humankind's another big act, the incident of the Tower of Babel. All these were the "bad incidents"
and it is in Genesis 12:1–4 that we get to see what God initiating a call is about.
One commentary states concerning a call "wherever the call was issued, its substance was the same: he was to

According to ethnographer Raphael Patai, author of Encyclopedia of Jewish Folklore and Traditions, in the plains of Ancient Mesopotamia around the
year 1812 B.C.E. as per Jewish tradition, Abraham was born to Terah, who was a man native to the province of Ur. Abraham was originally named
Abram, which translates as "exalted by his Father;" however, God would change his name to Abraham, a name that signifies "father of a multitude."
When he was seventy–five years old, God appeared to Abraham as El Shaddai, and commanded for him to go out of his father's house and travel to the
promised land of Canaan, where he would be gifted with a large amount of descendants, and El Shaddai Himself offered him protection throughout the

Furthermore, I would feel more prone to dedicate my life to this deity of my ancestors, because of His faithfulness, love, and care for His creation,
despite its brokenness. As modern reader, nonetheless, I feel that every one of the symbolisms presented throughout the story were just a
foretelling of Jesus. When God Himself goes through the blood of the animal carcasses, He was sealing a much more complex covenant.
Consequently, I would more fully understand the words of John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that
whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." Moreover, the New Testament gives witness that: "All of these things were only
copies, or shadows, of the better covenant to come. The New Covenant was in Jesus' blood" (Hebrews 9:23; Luke 22:20). Jesus Christ was the seed
of Abraham, and through Him all nations have been blessed with the gift of redemption. No matter how broken humans are, God has already provided

Abraham's Journey
This essay will compare the similarities and differences in the vital role of Abraham as a leader of the Christian faith and Judaism. The two holy
books, including the Bible, and the Tanakh cite different stories of Abraham's journey as a messenger of God and a messiah for the religious people.
His lineage is what sets Hinduism and Buddhism, the two polytheistic religions apart from the monotheistic beliefs. Similarities amongst some
religious stories, including the birth of Isaac, the sacrifice, and the first revelation help prove that Abraham was the founding father of the two faiths.

The Characteristics Of Abraham Led To Blessings
The Characteristics of Abraham Led to Blessings
The book of Genesis, written by Moses, retells the story of a great man named Abraham. The account tells of Abraham's call to action, and his
willingness to obey God. Throughout the entire tale, Abraham followed every ordinance that God told him, and his actions lead towards blessings for
him and his descendants. This blessing would eventually affect the entire Jewish nation and led them into an era of success. However, the prosperity
of Abraham's offspring would have been delayed if Abraham was not a compassionate, loyal, and obedient man when he was called to the task by God.
Although Abraham did experience many extraordinary events, he first started with a normal, family–oriented life. His family consisted of his father,
who was called Terah, and his two brothers, Nahor and Haran. However, Haran died and left behind two children (Lot and Milkah). After some time,
the Terah, Abraham,Sarah, and Lot started out from Ur so that they could settle in the land of Harran. This is where Abraham received his calling
from God and left Harran with his wife and nephew (The New International Version, Genesis 11:26–:32).
One of the qualities that lead to Abraham's reward was his compassion. Abraham demonstrated this attribute after he received his call from God. One
person that he showed much kindness to was Lot, his nephew. Since Abraham's brother had passed, his niece was wedded to his brother Nahor, which
allowed for her to receive

The Life of Abraham Essay example
God selected Abraham to be the father of the His people. The bible does not directly state why God selected him, but after reading scripture one can
conclude that God selected Abraham due to his great faith. Abraham's life lends itself as an example to all who desire to walk with God.
EARLY LIFE
Abraham was one of three sons born to Terah in the city of Ur of the Chaldeans. Research conducted by Elmer Towns indicates that Abraham was
younger than his two brothers, Nahor and Haran, although the bible does not specifically indicate that (56). The exact date of his birth cannot be
determined, but it is estimated to have been between 2100 and 1800 B.C. (Davis, 159). He was born after the flood and through the family line of

The bible does not indicate how long Abraham lived in Haran, but it does say that he remained there until his father's death. At this juncture in
Abraham's life, God again called out to him.
RESPONSE TO GOD'S CALL
In reaction to God's call, Abraham departed Haran enroute to Canaan. At 75 years of age, he abandoned his way of life assembled his wife, his
nephew Lot, his servants, livestock, and material possessions and moved in accordance with God's leading. Abraham's obedience to God serves as an
example for all believers to emulate. He left his "comfort zone" of living to follow God's spoken promises even though there was definite uncertainty
as to how they were going to come to pass.
Abraham sojourned in faith as God led him on his journey through the land of Canaan. He demonstrated a pattern of reliance on and fellowship with
God during his trek by building altars at stops along the way. Genesis 12:7 points out that God spoke to Abraham in Shechem, promising the land to
his descendants and Abraham constructed an altar. Genesis 12:8 shows that Abraham communed with God after moving from Shechem to Bethel by
erecting an altar. Abraham's movements through Canaan appear to be at God's leading and as a result of their communion, but God does not yet give
him possession of the land. The land through which he and his family are traveling is occupied by other inhabitants. A key point here is that while
Abraham and his family are traveling as

Old Testament Patriarchs Research Paper
The term "Patriarchs" in the Old Testament makes a reference to two groups of men. The first group is the twenty–men making up the ancestral lineage
between Adam to Abraham. At the beginning of this familial lineage there were ten men that lived before the flood who had extremely long lives and
were known as the Antediluvian Patriarchs, which consisted of Adam, Seth, Enos, Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech and Noah.
The second group known as the Patriarchs of Judaism were the first three leaders of the Israelites that included Abraham, his son Isaac and his grandson
Jacob. This chapter along with its sub–chapters only concerns itself with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

The passage of Genesis 14 tells the story of Abram and how he is brought into the picture after a great war. The war consisted of five kings on one
side, and four kings on the other. The five kings were defeated by the four and all of their possessions were taken. Lot, who was Abram's nephew,
and all his possessions were taken as part of their loot, while there was one, unnamed man who had escaped and made his way to tell Abram of the
tragedy. Abram then gathered together his three hundred and eighteen servants in order to rescue Lot. (Gen 14:14) They pursued the kings and their

The history of man may have started with Adam and Eve, but the history of Israel began with Abram, which happens to be the person this paper is
written about. We will soon be looking at Genesis 14, and the story of Abram saving Lot and being blessed by Melchizedek. But first we need to
establish a background to provide a better understanding of the chapter.
The occurrence of a system of twelve toledot divisions throughout the book of Genesis has long had the attention of Old Testament scholars. These
toledot (ЧЄЧ•ЧњЧ“Ч•ЧЄ), which are translated as "generations," occur throughout the book of Genesis. These divisions are basically the stories of
the generations of man which go all the way back to Creation. The first generation did not need the word toledot associated with it as it was the first.
But just to name them, we have the following:
1. "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." (Gen. 1:1 – 2:3)
2. "These are the toledot of the heavens and the earth." (Gen. 2:4 – 4:26)
3. "This is the book of the toledot of Adam." (Gen. 5:1 – 6:8)
4. "These are the toledot of Noah." (Gen. 6:9 – 9:29)
5. "And these are the toledot of the sons of Noah." (Gen. 10:1–11:9)
6. "These are the toledot of Shem." (Gen. 11:10–26)
7. "And these are the toledot of Terah." (Gen. 11:27–25:11)
8. "And these are the toledot of Ishmael." (Gen. 25:12–18)

Abraham As A Creator And Father In The Bible
Abraham– Originally Abram, is portrayed as a founder and father in all three holy books, (the New Testament, the Quran, and Bible) specifically in
the Bible, he is referred to as a "spiritual father". The story in the Bible says that after the flood, and the death of Noah, 350 years after Noah's Ark, a
man is born and his name is Abraham. God calls upon Abraham living in Haran, a city in upper Mesopotamia, with his father Terah, and his wife,
Sarai, or (Sarah). God makes a covenant with Abram, promising to make Abram's descendants into a great nation. After hearing this from God,
Abram agrees to leave his home and move southwest to Canaan with his wife and his nephew, Lot, to a land which God has promised to give to
Abram's descendants. Abram takes up residence there and creates several altars throughout the land as symbols to prove his devotion to God. Soon
after his stay in Egypt, Abram becomes wealthy and returns to Canaan, and with the help of 318 men, he defeats marauding armies from the East
that has descended upon Sodom, where Lot is currently living. The king of Sodom recognizes Abram for his great deed, and the priest Melchizedek
blesses Abram with a gift of bread and wine. Soon after, God comes to him again, telling Abraham that he and Sarah will have a child of his own, and
when Abraham is 100 and his wife is 90, God gives them a child, named Isaac, his name meaning happiness. Once Isaac is older, Abraham is once

God's covenant with Abram, whose name was later changed to Abraham, was to be the father of many nations. The covenant includes promises
concerning a land covenant, a seed covenant, and a blessing covenant. The foundation will flow out of the "Seed Covenant" to his descendants Isaac
and Jacob, through whom the twelve tribes of Israel were born. There are seven elements in God's promise to Abram, which are listed in 12:2–3 1.I will
make you a great nation 2.I will bless you (personally blessing 3.I will make your name great 4.You shall be a blessing 5.I will blessed those who bless
you 6.I will curse those who curse you 7.In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed (Genesis 12:2–3). Abraham's response to God's promises
were obedience (4–6) and confirmation (v. 7). In Genesis 15 the writer states that the Lord took upon Himself alone the responsibility for fulfilling the
covenant. Genesis 17 adds the revelation that the covenant would be everlasting. One cannot research the Covenant and not about the narrative of

God 's Relationship With Abraham And How It Develops...
Genesis 12– 25 tells the story of God's relationship with Abraham and how it develops through Abraham's whole life. The original audience for this
is not completely known; however, there has been some evidence that it could have been the ancient Hebrews that had first listened to this story
(Brisben 43). The story begins with Abraham, who was known as Abram at the time, and his wife Sarah, formally Sarai, moving from their home
in Mesopotamia to the land of Canaan. The initial reason why Terah, Abraham's father, moved his family is not fully known, since they originally
did not make the move because God had called them. (Hill 86). It seems that Abraham's family may have had the polytheistic view, just as most of
the people had at that time. (Walton 87). In fact, "Yahweh" was not a part of their lives until God appeared to Abraham in Haran, telling him to
continue the journey to Canaan. God told Abraham that Canaan would be the "Promised Land" for Abraham's descendants. The story is presented in
a chiastic structure, with each part of the story having a parallel part that replicates it in some way. The climax is in the middle of the story, which is
when God declares the covenant and changes Abraham's and Sarah's names to show that they are new people. He also promises that they would have
a son. The beginning of the story describes God as Yahweh, which means "ever present one", and then God reveals himself as El–Shaddai, meaning
"covenant keeping one" (Brisben

Comparing Two Creation Stories
In the book of Genesis, we are introduced to everything. From the creation stories to the sagas in between Genesis is an opening to the old testament
and an opening to the book of exodus. This essay will contrast each creation story and describe each stories interest, explain how Genesis 12: 1–3 links
the stories of 2: 4b–11 with the ancestral narratives in 12–50 and connect the sagas of Abraham/Sarah, Isaac/ Rebecca and Jacob/ Racheal. The first
creation story is found in Genesis 1–2:4 and it explains how God created the world from a void of darkness in six days of work. On day one God made
the heavens. On day two God made the sky. On day three God made land and sea. On day four God created time. On day five God made marine
creatures. One... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the second creation story Gods interest was to find man a partner stating "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as
his partner" (Genesis 2:18). God attempted to bring every animal in creation to the man in hopes that they would fit as a good partner but they did
not. The LORD than decided to make a creature for man to partner with stating "then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And
the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman" (Genesis 2:21–22) Thus making man a fitting partner. The calling of
Abraham in 12:1–3 is shown as a bridge to link 2:4b–11 and the ancestral narrative of 12–50 because it explains the human problem and the divine
solution. In Genesis 2:4b–11 God noticed that as mankind began to reproduce they became more and more wicked because of their selfishness and
arrogance (Human Problem). God decided to wipe them out and start fresh stating "Now the Earth was corrupt in God's sight and the earth was
filled with violence". Before God ended flesh he saved Noah and his family because of their holiness by allowing them to aboard an ark so that they
could multiply the Earth with people of holiness. When Noah's family was told to be fruitful and multiply, Abraham was born by Noah's grandson
Terah. This links to the ancestral narrative placed in 12–50 because they are consisted of

Abram To Abraham: A Man Of God's Story

Old Testament

Abram to Abraham: A Man of God's Story Abraham is one of the most popular characters of the Bible, and for good reason. He is one of the most
courageous, spiritual, and inspiring people in all of history. He came to know of God through reasoning, and realizing that there is a greater power
behind the moon and the sun, not through lessons. He came to God; something interesting, which not many other characters have done. Abraham is
one of the best servants God ever had, and his story is full of amazing miracles. Abraham wasn't always known as Abraham. He was originally named
Abram, and he was the son of Terah. Terah worked for Nimrod, who ruled his land. The night Abram was born, the astrologers came to Nimrod and

They said that a leader had just been born, and he was going to father a nation. Nimrod didn't like this, and the next morning, he ordered Terah to
hand over the child. Terah was smarter than this, and gave him a servant's child, who had been born the same night. Nimrod killed the servant's
baby, allowing someone to get Abram out. Abram lived with Noah for a while, but something before that, he had come to realization that God was
real. He looked at how the sun moved for the moon, and vice versa. God did eventually present himself to Abram, showing him he was right. After
he had matured, Abram went back to Terah. When he arrived, he had found that several idols were scattered across his land. While Terah was away,
Abram smashed all but one with an axe. Terah came back, and he was shocked. He asked Abram what happened, and Abram replied saying that the
largest idol had smashed the others, fighting over an offering, Terah said that couldn't happen, because stone and wood figures can't move. Realizing
what he just said, Terah went to Nimrod, infuriated. He told Nimrod about Abram, and that he was a liar, and disrespected the gods. The

Creation Myths in the Abrahamic Religions
According to Charles Dickens, "The whole difference between construction and creation is this: that a thing constructed can only be loved after it is
constructed; but a thing created is loved before it exists" (qtd. in "Charles Dickens"). Although the creation stories of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam
have some differences, the fact that the three Abrahamic religions all arose in the same Middle Eastern area in succession may have had an effect on
not only each religion's beliefs that can be found in their creation myth, but also on their extreme similarities, especially on the ideas regarding the
beginning of time. These three religions have greatly influenced each other because of these factors and continue to affect each other today. In
regards to creation, all three of these religions believe that there was one God who made all things but believe in other differing aspects of their
stories to explain the dawn of time. For example, while Jews and Christians believe that God said "Let there be..." (Smith et al., "Jewish Creation
Story")(Smith et al., "Christian Creation Story"), Muslims think that their God said only "Be" (Smith et al., "Muslim Creation Story"). Judaism,
Christianity, and Islam will forever be connected because of their shared area of emergence in sequence which resulted in their similar but yet still
different beliefs. The creation myths of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have basically the same ideas about the belief that all things were created by a

Genesis 11:27–32 A Family in Transition
Chuck Swindol said, "Whatever else may be said about the home, it is the bottom line of life, the anvil upon which attitudes and convictions are

Abram Family Tree Chapter 11-15

  • 1. Abram Family Tree Chapter 11-15 Trey Schneider Mr. Fraune Theology 9B, A Block February 28, 2015 Genesis: Chapters 11–20 Chapter 11 Characters:LORD, the family tree of Shem Main Theme(s):This chapter shows the family tree of Shem to Abram. Major Events/Teachings:This chapter talks about the family from Shem's family all the way to Abram, which is the son of Terah. The chapter ends with the wife of Abram, Sarai, having no children and how they traveled from Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan. Once they got to Canaan, they settled there and lived there. Impressions:I do not know what to think about chapter 11 of the book of Genesis. This is so because the entire chapter is a long family line that starts with Shem and goes all the way to Abram. It also talks about the family of Abram, such as his wife, Sarai, and how she could not... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Major Events/Teachings:In this chapter, there was a battle between all of the kings of the nations and Lot is arrested an put in prison. The people of Canaan invaded Sodom. Melchizedek eventually blesses Abram in the name of the Lord. Abram finds stolen goods and returns them to the town. Impressions:My impression of this chapter is that the kingdom arrested Lot and stole all of his valuable goods. Abram is being brave enough to release Lot and find the stolen goods and return them to the people. The battle between the kings made a point in Israel's history. Chapter 15 Characters:God and Abram

  • 3. The Bible And Of The Pentateuch Genesis Genesis is the first book of the Holy Bible and of the Pentateuch, which is more commonly referred to as the Law. Literary Genre: Narrative Dates and Authorship: Although, the author is never named it has been accepted that the book was written by Moses. The book was most likely written during the year that Moses spent at Mount Sinai where he wrote the books of Exodus and Leviticus, 1446–1445 B.C. (DeCanio, 2010) Key themes: God and Creation, (Genesis 1–2) God and Judgement, (Genesis 3:8–19, Genesis 4:9–15) Relationship between God and humanity, (Genesis 3:15, Genesis 12:3, Genesis 22:18) Fall of Man, (Genesis 3:22) and Divine Judgement by God (Genesis 3:14–19, Genesis 4:9–15).(DeCanio, 2010) Purpose: The book of Genesis's purpose is to describe the building blocks of a theocracy that God created with mankind. Moses had to present and explain that from the very beginning, God had a divine plan for his people. This is why Moses goes into a detailed account of how the earth and mankind was created because it is important to realize that the same God who created us is the same God calling Abraham, later in the book of Genesis. Major Events: The creation of the world and of man who was made in God's image to have a personal relationship with God and to rule over the world God had created. (Genesis 1:26–28) The fall of man into sin and the divine judgement by God. (Genesis 3:1–13) God's promise to Abraham to bless him and all of his descendants and all of the other ... • 4. The Hebrew Empire: The Abrahamic Religion Hebrew is the likely oldest religious tradition still practiced today. While the Hebrew empire was weak by comparison to their contemporaries, it has stood the test of time. Hebrew is the major foundation for other Abrahamic religions such as Christianity and Islam; and Hebrew has been a major force in shaping the world. The term "Abrahamic religion" refers to Abraham being considered the founder of the Hebrew people. During their 4000–year history, the Hebrew people have experienced the likes of slavery, conquest, occupation, and exile; they have been in contact with, and influenced by ancient cultures like the Egyptians, Babylonians, and Persians. One of the main ideas that set Hebrews apart at the time was Monotheism. "Their early contribution to humankind was not wealthy empires or groundbreaking technology. Rather, it was the revolutionary idea that there was only one god. This one Hebrew god was called Yahweh. " Not only did Hebrews believe in only one God, they also held Him as an omniscient and omnipotent God. They ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not only were these Gods limited to their own domain, they showed cruelty and treated humans as playthings. To the Hebrews, God is unlimited and cares for His creations. The religion is rooted in the belief of a deity who was just and merciful. The Hebrews singular God was just and merciful, but demanded moral behavior from humans. Based on the telling of Abraham in the Torah, the Hebrew's monotheistic beliefs stem from the death of Abraham's father. Upon the death of Terah, Yahweh (God) came to Abraham and instructed him to smash his father's idols, put his full belief in Yahweh and move his remaining family to Canaan. The Land of Canaan is believed to be what is current day Israel. Yahweh promised Abraham that he would found a great nation here and dubbed it "The Land of Milk and ... • 5. The Religion Of The Nation Of Israel Abram, a pagan gentile called from a pagan land and culture, became the patriarch of the Nation of Israel. Moreover, through God's covenant with him his numerous descendants inherited Palestine and from them came Messiah, the blessing to all peoples on earth. Understanding the culture of Ur of the Chaldeans, Abram's place of origin, requires a determination of where this area was located and analyzing archaeological discoveries of that area in conjunction with other disciplines of biblical study. About 1800 B.C. Abram's father, Terah, took his family and left Ur for Canaan but settled in Haran where Terah died. Haran was located in the southern part of modern–day Turkey. After his father's death, Abram was called by God to continue his journey to the land of Canaan and he was called from, "Ur of the Chaldeans." Abraham's call from this pagan culture further affirms that God is both merciful and gracious as well as sovereign over the affairs of mankind. Ur of the Chaldeans is the first reference to the city in the biblical narrative with regards to Abram's city of origin. Abram's brother, Haran, died in Ur before Terah, Abram's and Haran's father, took the family to the city of Haran, a well–known stop along trade routes in Mesopotamia. The exact location of where the ancient city of Ur was located is debatable. Prior to an 1849 excavation–by Sir. W.K. Loftus–of a site located in modern–day southern Iraq, most scholars placed Ur in the north based on the biblical narrative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Jesus was born in the city of Bethlehem in Judea by the Virgin Mary in a stable. Joseph was the earthly father of Jesus. • 7. Number 36 In The Hebrew Bible Numbers 36 Throughout the Hebrew Bible, doublets (identical duplicative stories in the same text) are a common occurrence. These parallels create confusion for the readers who may wonder why these stories are reiterated and, often times, why are they placed so close together. Is it merely happenstance or is it done purposefully? This is a main point of interest that arises from the story of Numbers 36, which appears to mirror the content of the earlier Chapter 27. The question raised concerning this final chapter is why this text is placed here and not where the original story is presented in Chapter 27; the placement of Numbers 36 at the end of the book does not fit contextually considering its subject matter. The book of Numbers is a detailed narrative history of the 40 years of wandering that the Israelites spent in the desert following their deliverance from Egypt. Chapter 27:1 –11 recounts a ... The heads of the tribe of Manasseh responded to the Lord's ruling, challenging that if the daughters marry outside of the clan, then would the inheritance not go to their husbands. This would mean that the inheritance would be out of the family and defeat the purpose of the previous injunction. The Lord saw that their objection was justified and declared that the heiresses must marry within their tribe and family. In accordance with this, the daughters married their first cousins on their father's side to maintain the family's inheritance. Although there is no problem within the content of the chapter, it is baffling why Chapter 36 was placed here instead of where it would fit contextually, following Chapter 27:1–11. Why was it placed at the end of the book altogether? Plausible answers to this chapter's placement may be that: the book was written chronologically, was written to reflect genealogical interest, or was composed as an addendum for the earlier passage in Chapter ... The General History Of Ancient Mesopotamia MRS 101: The general history of ancient Mesopotamia: people groups, culture, and religion Situated in the Tigris Euphrates valley was the property of Mesopotamia. It was here that the first cities in the world were founded between 4000 – 3500 BC from the Sumerian people. They developed their very own belief system, using various goddesses and gods. They developed rites and spiritual practices for worshiping these strong deities. Their daily lives were also much different than those of the last hunter gatherer groups that roamed over the world in a continuous hunt for resources. • 10. The Testament Of Abraham 's Story At The Beginning Of Genesis Although the Bible was written thousands of years ago, the lessons expressed by God are just as relevant in today's world. The Bible, specifically the Book of Genesis, consists of stories that seem outdated, however, these stories illustrate moral lessons that will always be applicable in life. The most prominent lesson is that people must have faith in God in order to trust Him with all of their heart. Particular instances from the lives of Abraham and Joseph provide reasons to believe God is always trustworthy. In the Abraham's story at the beginning of Genesis, God speaks directly to his people and they are able to speak directly back; by the time of Joseph's life, God's presence is less obvious and requires more blind faith. These timeless messages emphasize that all of God's promises are certain and that his followers must grow to faithfully trust Him. The story of Abraham gives followers reason to believe that God's promises are absolute. Abraham's biblical story follows the pattern of God testing his followers' faith, blessing them and forming a binding covenant with them. Abraham's story of his faithful journey begins with God saying to him, "Leave your country, your kindred and your father's house for a country which I shall show you; and I shall make you a great nation, I shall bless you and make your name famous; you are to be a blessing!" • 13. Christianity And The Jewish Religion Christianity In the initial decades of the Roman Empire, at the eastern end of the Mediterranean, a new religion, Christianity, emerged. Much of the impetus for this new religion rested in issues in the Jewish religion, including a long–standing belief in the coming of a Messiah and rigidities that had developed in the Jewish priesthood. Whether or not Christianity was created by God, as Christians believe, the early stages of the religion focused on cleansing the Jewish religion of stiff rituals and haughty leaders. It had little at first to do with Roman culture. Christianity arose in a remote province and appealed particularly to the poorer classes. It is not easy, as a result, to fit Christianity neatly into the patterns of Roman history: It was deliberately separate, and only gradually had wider impact.(Robert A. Guisepi) Symbol The Christian cross has traditionally been a symbol representing Christianity or Christendom as a whole. The Christian cross was in use from the time of early Christianity, but it remained less prominent than competing symbols (Ichthys, Staurogram, Alpha and Omega, Christogram, Labarum, etc.) until the medieval Crusades. Early Christianity had use for such symbols due to the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire, as the symbol allowed inconspicuous identification of one Christian to another.(2016, Wikipedia) Druze Faith The Druze, also known as the "Sons of Grace," are a secretive, tightly–knit religious sect whose origins can be ... According to the Holman Bible Dictionary, " His personal name meant "father of a multitude." The first Hebrew patriarch, he became known as the prime example of faith. He was the son of Terah, a descendant of Noah's son, Shem. (Genesis 11:27 ). His childhood was spent in Ur of the Chaldees, a prominent Sumerian city. • 26. Abrahamic Research Paper According to ethnographer Raphael Patai, author of Encyclopedia of Jewish Folklore and Traditions, in the plains of Ancient Mesopotamia around the year 1812 B.C.E. as per Jewish tradition, Abraham was born to Terah, who was a man native to the province of Ur. Abraham was originally named Abram, which translates as "exalted by his Father;" however, God would change his name to Abraham, a name that signifies "father of a multitude." When he was seventy–five years old, God appeared to Abraham as El Shaddai, and commanded for him to go out of his father's house and travel to the promised land of Canaan, where he would be gifted with a large amount of descendants, and El Shaddai Himself offered him protection throughout the journey. Furthermore, I would feel more prone to dedicate my life to this deity of my ancestors, because of His faithfulness, love, and care for His creation, despite its brokenness. As modern reader, nonetheless, I feel that every one of the symbolisms presented throughout the story were just a foretelling of Jesus. When God Himself goes through the blood of the animal carcasses, He was sealing a much more complex covenant. Consequently, I would more fully understand the words of John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." Moreover, the New Testament gives witness that: "All of these things were only copies, or shadows, of the better covenant to come. The New Covenant was in Jesus' blood" (Hebrews 9:23; Luke 22:20). Jesus Christ was the seed of Abraham, and through Him all nations have been blessed with the gift of redemption. • 27. Abraham's Journey This essay will compare the similarities and differences in the vital role of Abraham as a leader of the Christian faith and Judaism. The two holy books, including the Bible, and the Tanakh cite different stories of Abraham's journey as a messenger of God and a messiah for the religious people. His lineage is what sets Hinduism and Buddhism, the two polytheistic religions apart from the monotheistic beliefs. Similarities amongst some religious stories, including the birth of Isaac, the sacrifice, and the first revelation help prove that Abraham was the founding father of the two faiths. The Jewish faith believes that Abraham (father of multitudes) was the son of Terah , who was a maker of idols in the city of Ur. Abraham resented his father's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. The Characteristics Of Abraham Led To Blessings The Characteristics of Abraham Led to Blessings The book of Genesis, written by Moses, retells the story of a great man named Abraham. The account tells of Abraham's call to action, and his willingness to obey God. Throughout the entire tale, Abraham followed every ordinance that God told him, and his actions lead towards blessings for him and his descendants. This blessing would eventually affect the entire Jewish nation and led them into an era of success. However, the prosperity of Abraham's offspring would have been delayed if Abraham was not a compassionate, loyal, and obedient man when he was called to the task by God. Although Abraham did experience many extraordinary events, he first started with a normal, family–oriented life. His family consisted of his father, who was called Terah, and his two brothers, Nahor and Haran. However, Haran died and left behind two children (Lot and Milkah). After some time, the Terah, Abraham,Sarah, and Lot started out from Ur so that they could settle in the land of Harran. This is where Abraham received his calling from God and left Harran with his wife and nephew (The New International Version, Genesis 11:26–:32). One of the qualities that lead to Abraham's reward was his compassion. Abraham demonstrated this attribute after he received his call from God. One person that he showed much kindness to was Lot, his nephew. Since Abraham's brother had passed, his niece was wedded to his brother Nahor, which allowed for her to receive ... The bible does not directly state why God selected him, but after reading scripture one can conclude that God selected Abraham due to his great faith. Abraham's life lends itself as an example to all who desire to walk with God. EARLY LIFE Abraham was one of three sons born to Terah in the city of Ur of the Chaldeans. Research conducted by Elmer Towns indicates that Abraham was younger than his two brothers, Nahor and Haran, although the bible does not specifically indicate that (56). The exact date of his birth cannot be determined, but it is estimated to have been between 2100 and 1800 B.C. (Davis, 159). He was born after the flood and through the family line of Shem, ten ... At this juncture in Abraham's life, God again called out to him. RESPONSE TO GOD'S CALL In reaction to God's call, Abraham departed Haran enroute to Canaan. At 75 years of age, he abandoned his way of life assembled his wife, his nephew Lot, his servants, livestock, and material possessions and moved in accordance with God's leading. Abraham's obedience to God serves as an example for all believers to emulate. He left his "comfort zone" of living to follow God's spoken promises even though there was definite uncertainty as to how they were going to come to pass. Abraham sojourned in faith as God led him on his journey through the land of Canaan. He demonstrated a pattern of reliance on and fellowship with God during his trek by building altars at stops along the way. Genesis 12:7 points out that God spoke to Abraham in Shechem, promising the land to his descendants and Abraham constructed an altar. Genesis 12:8 shows that Abraham communed with God after moving from Shechem to Bethel by erecting an altar. Abraham's movements through Canaan appear to be at God's leading and as a result of their communion, but God does not yet give him possession of the land. The history of man may have started with Adam and Eve, but the history of Israel began with Abram, which happens to be the person this paper is written about. We will soon be looking at Genesis 14, and the story of Abram saving Lot and being blessed by Melchizedek. But first we need to establish a background to provide a better understanding of the chapter. The occurrence of a system of twelve toledot divisions throughout the book of Genesis has long had the attention of Old Testament scholars. These toledot (ЧЄЧ•ЧњЧ“Ч•ЧЄ), which are translated as "generations," occur throughout the book of Genesis. These divisions are basically the stories of the generations of man which go all the way back to Creation. The first generation did not need the word toledot associated with it as it was the first. But just to name them, we have the following: 1. "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." (Gen. 1:1 – 2:3) 2. "These are the toledot of the heavens and the earth." (Gen. 2:4 – 4:26) 3. "This is the book of the toledot of Adam." (Gen. 5:1 – 6:8) 4. "These are the toledot of Noah." (Gen. 6:9 – 9:29) 5. "And these are the toledot of the sons of Noah." Abraham As A Creator And Father In The Bible Abraham– Originally Abram, is portrayed as a founder and father in all three holy books, (the New Testament, the Quran, and Bible) specifically in the Bible, he is referred to as a "spiritual father". The story in the Bible says that after the flood, and the death of Noah, 350 years after Noah's Ark, a man is born and his name is Abraham. God calls upon Abraham living in Haran, a city in upper Mesopotamia, with his father Terah, and his wife, Sarai, or (Sarah). God makes a covenant with Abram, promising to make Abram's descendants into a great nation. After hearing this from God, Abram agrees to leave his home and move southwest to Canaan with his wife and his nephew, Lot, to a land which God has promised to give to Abram's descendants. Abram takes up residence there and creates several altars throughout the land as symbols to prove his devotion to God. Soon after his stay in Egypt, Abram becomes wealthy and returns to Canaan, and with the help of 318 men, he defeats marauding armies from the East that has descended upon Sodom, where Lot is currently living. The king of Sodom recognizes Abram for his great deed, and the priest Melchizedek blesses Abram with a gift of bread and wine. Soon after, God comes to him again, telling Abraham that he and Sarah will have a child of his own, and when Abraham is 100 and his wife is 90, God gives them a child, named Isaac, his name meaning happiness. • 36. God 's Relationship With Abraham And How It Develops... Genesis 12– 25 tells the story of God's relationship with Abraham and how it develops through Abraham's whole life. The original audience for this is not completely known; however, there has been some evidence that it could have been the ancient Hebrews that had first listened to this story (Brisben 43). The story begins with Abraham, who was known as Abram at the time, and his wife Sarah, formally Sarai, moving from their home in Mesopotamia to the land of Canaan. The initial reason why Terah, Abraham's father, moved his family is not fully known, since they originally did not make the move because God had called them. (Hill 86). It seems that Abraham's family may have had the polytheistic view, just as most of the people had at that time. (Walton 87). In fact, "Yahweh" was not a part of their lives until God appeared to Abraham in Haran, telling him to continue the journey to Canaan. God told Abraham that Canaan would be the "Promised Land" for Abraham's descendants. The story is presented in a chiastic structure, with each part of the story having a parallel part that replicates it in some way. The climax is in the middle of the story, which is when God declares the covenant and changes Abraham's and Sarah's names to show that they are new people. He also promises that they would have a son. The beginning of the story describes God as Yahweh, which means "ever present one", and then God reveals himself as El–Shaddai, meaning "covenant keeping one" (Brisben ... The first creation story is found in Genesis 1–2:4 and it explains how God created the world from a void of darkness in six days of work. On day one God made the heavens. On day two God made the sky. In the second creation story Gods interest was to find man a partner stating "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner" (Genesis 2:18). God attempted to bring every animal in creation to the man in hopes that they would fit as a good partner but they did not. The LORD than decided to make a creature for man to partner with stating "then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman" (Genesis 2:21–22) Thus making man a fitting partner. The calling of Abraham in 12:1–3 is shown as a bridge to link 2:4b–11 and the ancestral narrative of 12–50 because it explains the human problem and the divine solution. In Genesis 2:4b–11 God noticed that as mankind began to reproduce they became more and more wicked because of their selfishness and arrogance (Human Problem). God decided to wipe them out and start fresh stating "Now the Earth was corrupt in God's sight and the earth was filled with violence". Before God ended flesh he saved Noah and his family because of their holiness by allowing them to aboard an ark so that they could multiply the Earth with people of holiness. When Noah's family was told to be fruitful and multiply, Abraham was born by Noah's grandson Terah. This links to the ancestral narrative placed in 12–50 because they are consisted of ... Abram To Abraham: A Man Of God's Story Robert McDaniel Mrs. Hunter Old Testament 29 September 2015 Abram to Abraham: A Man of God's Story Abraham is one of the most popular characters of the Bible, and for good reason. He came to know of God through reasoning, and realizing that there is a greater power behind the moon and the sun, not through lessons. Abram lived with Noah for a while, but something before that, he had come to realization that God was real. He looked at how the sun moved for the moon, and vice versa. God did eventually present himself to Abram, showing him he was right. After he had matured, Abram went back to Terah. When he arrived, he had found that several idols were scattered across his land. While Terah was away, Abram smashed all but one with an axe. Terah came back, and he was shocked. He asked Abram what happened, and Abram replied saying that the largest idol had smashed the others, fighting over an offering, Terah said that couldn't happen, because stone and wood figures can't move. Creation Myths in the Abrahamic Religions According to Charles Dickens, "The whole difference between construction and creation is this: that a thing constructed can only be loved after it is constructed; but a thing created is loved before it exists" (qtd. in "Charles Dickens"). Although the creation stories of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have some differences, the fact that the three Abrahamic religions all arose in the same Middle Eastern area in succession may have had an effect on not only each religion's beliefs that can be found in their creation myth, but also on their extreme similarities, especially on the ideas regarding the beginning of time. These three religions have greatly influenced each other because of these factors and continue to affect each other today. In regards to creation, all three of these religions believe that there was one God who made all things but believe in other differing aspects of their stories to explain the dawn of time. For example, while Jews and Christians believe that God said "Let there be..." (Smith et al., "Jewish Creation Story")(Smith et al., "Christian Creation Story"), Muslims think that their God said only "Be" (Smith et al., "Muslim Creation Story"). Judaism, Christianity, and Islam will forever be connected because of their shared area of emergence in sequence which resulted in their similar but yet still different beliefs.
