Starbucks Importance
Starbucks should have, like all big companies, a good image for such a huge company that is located
in 70 countries with over 24,000 stores. Like many other companies, Starbucks gets thousands of
customers everyday and that is why it's important that Starbucks build better relationships.
Starbucks creating jobs, supporting farmers, and taking care of the environment in third world
countries is important. It's comforting to know when you purchase a drink from Starbucks, you are
helping others with newly created jobs and improving the community. Starbucks has given 8,000
veterans and 10,000 young people jobs and with almost 20,000 created jobs, how could it not be
important? Not only do they create jobs, they help farmers with the "Farmer Loan ... Show more

Viewing the Youtube video gives out a positive feeling that you're being involved with someone else
and helping them when you purchase something from a Starbucks. This approach to vertising is
effective and clever and with over 15 million views on the Youtube video, many have seen the
Youtube video and even commented positive remarks like "dang. that definitely will make me go to
Starbucks more" and "Best coffee shop in the world and all of its stores served me with great
quality from Jordan to Texas to NY to Cana to Mrid to Barcelona to Saudi Arabia. Best of luck and
keep it up!
". The commenter even acknowledged that the advertisement worked on him and will
definitely be going to Starbucks more. These comments show appreciation for Starbucks'
participation in the community and just proves that it worked on getting the consumers happy and
wanting more. Starbucks' approach is a win–win situation where they help others and in return, they
help Starbucks. I, like others who also viewed their site, get a positive feeling from looking on the
Starbucks sites but the Starbucks video, however, did not deliver a positive feeling. The video also
felt as if they were bragging by showcasing their achievements. Starbucks is marketing itself as a
company that helps society, communities, and diversity to benefit society by listing all the
accomplishments they have achieved. This method of vertising is helping society immensely with
thousands of people with new jobs and create new opportunities for farmers. Starbucks also benefits
from people who view these programs that Starbucks create and are convinced to purchase more
drinks or food from Starbucks. Although their actions are for good, using third world countries as a
way of humbly bragging isn't. Ultimately, Starbucks'

The Locavore 's Dilemma By Christophe Pelletire
How would you feel about only eating the food that is 100 miles within the distance that you live?
Would you be able to do it every single day? Within 100 miles of where you currently living, do you
have access to fresh meat products, seafood, dairy products, fresh fruit, and vegetables products? If
you drink coffee, are coffee beans readily available within that area? What about chocolate or coco,
are coco beans grown nearby? Are you in an area where corn and wheat are grown where you can
produce all the carbohydrates like cereal, bread, and pastries that you consume regularly? What
about sugar cane or sugar beats, the main sources of sugar used in soda, candy, and other sweet
products? Locavores are people who only eat local food that is grown within a 100 miles from
where they live. What effect does this have on people who come to visit and have to eat food that is
only local food? In the article "The Locavore's Dilemma," author Christophe Pelletire's skillful
presentation of his ethos overshadows his less successful portrayal of pathos for locavores and logos
concerning the topic about locavores. Pelletire shows his pathos for the quality of food, shows ethos
by giving the readers many examples of the types of resources people would lose, and shows his
logos by providing his story with data he collected while physically living in Vancouver. In the
article, the author is most successful in his presentation of the appeal of ethos, due to all the
information he can give

The House Of The Scorpion By Nancy Farmer
In the story The House of the Scorpion, written by Nancy Farmer, the main character is Matt, who is
a clone of El Patron. The main setting of the story is in the Mexican area in the future. In the
beginning of the story, Matt only knows one other person and only one person knows about him,
that person is Celia. The main problem in the story is that when Matt finally gets exposed to other
people, he finds out he's a clone and also finds out that most people despise of clones. The solution
is that during El Patron's funeral, everyone with some sort of power dies with the wine that El
Patron demanded they'd drink when he dies. At the end of the story, Matt is technically not a clone
anymore, because El Patron is dead. Matt should not be treated poorly just because he's a clone. The
only time, when people are somewhat nice to him is when El Patron is ... Show more content on

I feel as if Matt and I are very good at being taken advantage of by others. "A more evil, vicious,
and self serving man could hardly be imagined, wrote Esperanza on the next line." (pg. 170) Matt
dismissed the details saying that El Patron was evil because he couldn't believe someone he loved
could be evil and he thought Esperanza was just jealous of El Patron because of what a "genius" he
was. The truth is that Esperanza had already seen how evil El Patron's ways were, and Matt just
hadn't realized them yet because he thought of El Patron as a perfect god who would never hurt him.
"I'm not supposed to talk about it, but yes, I do know where he got it! And it's evil!" (pg.208) In this
case, Maria was trying to warn and help Matt understand what his sad fate would be but he didn't
want to see why she was so concerned because he truly believed his fate would be to help run the
empire, when it really was for him to be used for transplants. Matt and I both try to see the good in

Examples Of Discrimination In Frankenstein
Discrimination in Frankenstein
Frankenstein is a book that explores society and human behavior when someone different is
introduced. It says that humans are not always willing to introduce someone new to their society.
Have you ever discriminated against someone or been discriminated against because you were
different? Frankenstein is a book that explores difference in a society, to explore this theme a
monster is created to give the idea of rejection. This monster is rejected everywhere he goes because
of his difference. He is rejected by his creator, and then he is rejected by the villagers, by the farmers
who the monster had so long admired and in the end by the reader himself. "Unable to endure the
aspect of the being I had created, I rushed out of the room". ... Show more content on

Victor had worked day and night trying to create an individual that would be and would look like a
human. Once Victor had finished creating this monster he realized how not human alike the monster
was and decided to reject him. This was a sign by the author to show the rejection of the monster by
the creator and how no one even the creator accepts the monster because of the way he is and the
way he looks. This happens in our modern world today as many parents do not accept their child
because of his ideas and future plans.
"The whole village was roused; some fled, some attacked me2
Wherever he goes, the monster cannot find a person who accepts his way of being. This is shown in
the different villages the monster visits. we see that the monster is attacked and harassed by the
villagers. The rejection of the monster by the villagers is a symbol of rejection as it may happen
when someone is introduced to a new culture which does not accept him.

Remember The Most Important Day Of The Day
It was a cold Friday morning in suburbia when Nancy had woken up to a loud drilling across the
street. There were children rushing to school with their bags weighing them down and parents on
their mobile phones trying to explain to their coworkers why they were running late. It looked like a
somewhat normal end to the week.
As Nancy pulled back the curtain, she saw a builder bent over drilling into the pavement with his
crack on show. She sighed and laid back down. It was only until Nancy looked towards the poster
across the room of the Hocus Pocus movie that it suddenly dawned on her. She smiled as she
remembered it was Halloween! How did she forget? How did she not remember the most important
day of the year? Jumping up with excitement Nancy head toward the cupboard next to the poster
where her wand was and chuckled "TODAY IS THE DAY!"
What was the day and what was going to happen? Nancy was known to be a grumpy thirty five year
old living in the suburbs of New York. She wasn't well known however she was known for her
inability to exchange pleasantries in the neighbourhood.
Nancy got downstairs and found a stack of things to do. She was a housewife. Her husband was a
corporate boss working in the city and she was the stay at home wife. This was by choice so she
could work her magic during the day and while he was asleep at night. Lately things seemed to be
dreary in the Brown household. Her husband Quinn would sleep in their bed while Nancy would

The House Of Scorpion Character Analysis
In the story "The House of Scorpion", written by Nancy Farmer, the main characters are Matteo
Alacran who is a clone from El Patron. Matteo was made by a scientist in lab in the mexican border.
Another main character is Matt's caregiver which is a woman named Celia, where she worked at the
Big House. Lastly, the third main character is El Patron, who is a powerful drug lord of opium in
mexico. The main settings is in the future where they now know the knowledge of cloning. The
main problem is that Matt is a clone and this makes Matt bad and unwanted to the "normal" people.
This makes Matt a bad person because he is not normal to hang around with people. Also, the
conflict is that El Patron is using Matt as a way to stay alive. At the end of the story, Matt was now
older and became leader of Mexico and opium. Another detail the happened at the end of the story is
the everyone died except Celia, Mr. Ortega, Matt's music teacher, and Daft Donald, who is a
bodyguard of El Patron.
My opinion on Celia is that she is a fearless, amorous, and smart because she doesn't mind talking
about life situations, she loves Matt although other people don't and knows lots of duties. The three
reasons I think these traits follow with Celia is that in the book, "The House of the Scorpion" on
page 125 it states "I'm not supposed to talk to you about this." This shows that Celia doesn't mind
talking about things she wasn't supposed to. This also shows she's not scared to talk about situations
that Matt saw while telling the truth and not lying to him. Another trait Celia has is amorous because
on page 10 it states "I love you more than anything in the world." Lastly, she's smart because on
page 142 it quotes "She taught me all kinds of things." This quote reminds me of my dad, because
my dad is very talented in many ways and taught me lots of things that are useful in life.
Based on a judgement, one prediction that I can refer on this story is that Matt will become leader of
Mexico and opium after El Patron dies and everyone will love him. Another thing I possibly believe
that Matt will do is, free people who were treated as slaves. One thing I believe that will change or
become different is, the hatred of clones after seeing how

The Inspirational Nature of Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens
Oliver Twist is a popular book written by Charles Dickens among many others
such as David Copperfield and A Christmas Carol. Charles Dickens wrote many short
stories, plays, novels, fiction, and nonfiction stories during his lifetime. He wrote a
lot about the different types of people in the world, especially about the poor. This
type of writing showed in the book Oliver Twist. This book is told by a 3rd
omniscient narrator.
Oliver Twist is the main character in this book as the story is based around
his life. He is an orphan boy who is in need of a good home. He lives in a workhouse
at first and escapes right away to look for better living conditions. The story of
Oliver's life is a main part of the whole book. Mr. Brownlow and Fagin are just a
couple that are mentioned more than others throughout the book. Mr. Brownlow is
a kind old gentleman that ends up taking care of Oliver. He is very important in the
story because he is the character that figures out the story behind Oliver's life. The
Brownlow household is the first place that Oliver has actually liked to be and not
wanted to escape. Oliver felt safe there after he had escaped the group of thieves he
had run across that was led by Fagin. Fagin was a thieve, murderer, and robber. His
plan was to make a bad kid out of Oliver, but by the end of the book that wasn't
going to happen. Fagin was a big part of the book because once Oliver had escaped

Oliver Twist By Charles Dickens Essay
Introduction
From the end of the eighteenth century to the start of the nineteenth century, London was a city with
a high wrongdoing rate. From 1745 to 1820, there were 115,000 individuals who made their living
by theft, prostitution, cheat and other criminal acts. It is terrible when we realize that the aggregate
populace of London around then was only 960,000.
Probably there was no other author in Victoria time that had such an in number worry about
wrongdoing, and fused such a great amount of depiction of wrongdoing in his functions as Charles
Dickens (1812– 1870) did. Oliver Twist was the second novel of Dickens distributed in a serial
structure in a magazine titled Bentleyʼs Miscellany run independent from anyone else from February
1837 to April 1839 when Dickens was still a columnist. In England, from the 1830s to the 1840s, a
lot of wrongdoing books were distributed. Oliver Twist was composed simply During that period.
Most faultfinders and book commentators of Dickens ' lifetime based their surveys of Oliver Twist
on one standard: how reasonable this novel was. Particularly, depictions of a group of lawbreakers
in London in this novel pulled in consideration and were the engaging point for quite a while.
Oliver Twist builds associations between the criminal characters themselves and additionally this
present reality conditions which motivated their generalizations. The states of destitution and an
absence of family being fixed to culpability are established

The Mystery Of Liars By Nancy Farmer
Ever since we were young we were shunned away from telling lies and were taught that it was
wrong. Why is it that lying was immoral, but then as we grow up we drift away from that lesson?
Many can say that we are cowards who hide behind our lies. Today there exist a white lie which
states that you are telling a lie to help someone. Why do we teach our kids that lying is bad when
adults lie all the time? In the quote Nancy Farmer compares the liars to rats who are cowards that
hides and runs around in dark places because looking at the word lying it can gives off a vibe of a
dark and lonely place. Just like rats who runs and hides in dark places, liars are basically hiding
behind the shadows and living alone in their lie. From the quote I agree and disagree with the quote,
where I agreed with the quote that liars are basically rats who hides and run from the truth, they
don't care if it's unpleasant to others and see lying as an escape route from trouble. Where I disagree
is they can't be called cowards because they might be telling a white lie and instead of being
unpleasant, it can actually help the person that is receiving the lie.
Getting told a lie is a very unpleasant feeling for some while for others. They have a stronger
mentality and can withstand being told a lie. Personally in my opinion, being told a lie makes one
feel as if they can't trust the person anymore due to the fact that they are hiding something. For the
person receiving the lie it is much more

Charles Dickens Essay
Biographical Summary Charles Dickens is one of the most influential writers in history and was
"born in Landport, now part of Portsmouth, on February 7th, 1812"(Priestly 5). Despite being the
successful writer that he was in life, Dickens had very humble beginnings and because his Father,
John Huffman Dickens, "lacked the money to support his family adequetly" , Dickens lived in
poverty through out most of his childhood (Collins). Matters only got worse, however, when
Dickens's Father had to "spen[d] time in prison for debt" causing Dickens to have to "work in a
London factory pasting labels on bottles of shoe polish" (Collins). It was a horrible experience for
him, but it also helped him to no doubt feel pity for the poor, which is ... Show more content on

Dickens, at the beginning of his life, was very optimistic, his novels having "serious themes and
plots" but also having "enough humor to keep [them] entertaining" (Collins). Later on in life,
however, Dickens writing became less lighthearted, with his "view of Victorian society, and perhaps
of the world, [having grown] darker" and his "character and plots seem[ing] to emphasize the evil
side of human experience" more and more (Collins). Since Dickens style of writing was mostly
influenced by his experiences, this change in style most likely resulted from negative experiences in
his life which every person tends to experience as they get older. Dickens had to abandon some of
the optimism that he had held on to in youth, which is something that usually happens as one
experience life more and the weight of the world is felt more on one's shoulders. In Dickens case,
this weight was Victorian society and all its vices which he had high hopes to escape from when on
"on January 4, 1842, Dickens and his wife boarded the steamer Britannia" to go to Boston in
America (Lepore). Dickens, like most people at the time, probably had an ideal picture of America
and most likely saw the country as a paradise against some of the old world's plagues and problems.
When he arrived at America his fantasies were not met, and he would often write home saying
things like "this is not the Republic [he] came to see" and how "this [was] not the Republic of [his]
imagination"(Lepore).

Labors And Slavery During The Gilded Age
During the Gilded Age both labors and farmers had very strong reasons to have these complaints.
Labors were treated as minorities, controlled by their bosses and weren't getting paid what they
deserved so this led to the unionizations, strikes and vandalisms. Farmers were in declined because
bigger farms were taking over and they were getting less money. They didn't understand why this
was happening if they had new machines, so this led to the Green Revolution and several political
activities. However, these complaints that both labors and farmers have, have their similarities and
differences.
Labors did not have very good wages and it was problem during the Gilded Age. Labors' had to live
by paternalism, meaning that George Pullman owned them. It seems as if labors never got a profit
for the long hours that they worked in the sweatshops. All the money goes straight back to Pullman,
because they had to pay for rent and their goods and groceries provided by him. So basically,
Pullman didn't consider them valuable because there was always someone looking for a job. These
reasons led to several unionizations like the Knights of Labor where they had to pay their dues to go
on strike and fight for them. Anyone from radical to bosses could join this union except bankers and
lawyers, which made no sense. They fought for workplace rights but where they did wrong is when
they demanded outside workplace rights such as free public schools for their children. This union
caused deaths

Great Expectations And Oliver Twist Analysis
People tend naively see orphans and those without caring families as hopeless and loveless
creatures. However, the goodness of strangers can easily prove these thoughts nonsensical as people
can provide an abundance of support and love to those with no blood relation to them and can
embrace strangers as family. In Charles Dickens' two novels Great Expectations and Oliver Twist,
Dickens challenges the typical idea of parentage and suggests the through love and generosity
anyone can become a guardian or mentor figure. Therefore, people should not place as much faith in
blood relations and look to others for sources of guidance and compassion.
Although bloodlines seemed to dictate who raised whom in the 1830s, children could find guidance
through those closest to them regardless of their non familial relationship. In Oliver Twist, Dickens
provides numerous figures to guide poor Oliver, none of which are related to him by blood,
excepting Rose. After falling ill and denounced as a thief, Mr. Brownlow and the housekeeper
bestow great kindness and tender care upon Oliver and nurture him as though he was their child:"'I
have never forgotten them or his quiet smile, but have seen them every day, side by side with those
of my own children'" (388). The housekeeper especially gives motherly attention to Oliver although
she has no prior relation to him. She compares Oliver to her memories of her own progeny and
therefore blatantly stands in as a mother figure in Oliver's life. By

Analysis Of The House Of The Scorpion By Nancy Farmer
In the story, The House of the Scorpion, written by Nancy Farmer, the main character is Matt
Alacran. The main setting is the country of Opium. The story begins when Matt is six years old,
living in a little house, having a strong desire to go outside and talk to people other than Celia. The
main conflict in the book is Matt being a clone of the lord of Opium, El Patron. The solution is when
El Patron dies and Tam Lin took Matt to Aztlán. At the end of the story Matt was brought back to
Opium by Esperanza, and was reunited with Celia, Mr. Ortega, and Daft Donald. Celia, Matt's
caregiver, takes great care of Matt even though she knows that one day she will have to give him up.
She make sure that Matt is not too attached to her. "But you were only loaned to me, Mi Vida"
(Farmer 12). This demonstrates Celia's job is to take care of Matt, not to become a mother figure.
For example, when Matt calls her his mother she gets very angry because that was not her task.
Also, Celia has cared for Matt more than anybody in Opium ever did. "All those years she'd told
him not to think of her as his mother fell away. No one else cared for him the way she did" (Farmer

Toward A Recovery Of Nineteenth Century Farming Handbooks...
Toward a Recovery of Nineteenth Century Farming Handbooks
While researching texts written about nineteenth century farming, I found a few authors who
published books about the literature of nineteenth century farming, particularly agricultural journals,
newspapers, pamphlets, and brochures. These authors often placed the farming literature they were
studying into an historical context by discussing the important events in agriculture of the year in
which the literature was published (see Demaree, for example). However, while these authors
discuss journals, newspapers, pamphlets, and brochures, I could not find much discussion about
another important source of farming knowledge: farming handbooks. My goal in this paper is to
bring this source into the agricultural literature discussion by connecting three agricultural
handbooks from the nineteenth century with nineteenth century agricultural history.
To achieve this goal, I have organized my paper into four main sections, two of which have sub–
sections. In the first section, I provide an account of three important events in nineteenth century
agricultural history: population and technological changes, the distribution of scientific new
knowledge, and farming's influence on education. In the second section, I discuss three nineteenth
century farming handbooks in connection with the important events described in the first section. I
end my paper with a third section that offers research questions that could be answered in

The House Of The Scorpion By Nancy Farmer
Everyone needs friends who they can trust and rely on to always have their back. The House of the
Scorpion is a dystopian fiction novel written by Nancy Farmer, is about a clone, named Matt, of the
powerful drug lord, El Patron. When he is brought into a world ruled by El Patron, he is hated by
everyone in the big house, except for a sweet girl named Maria, who lightens Matt's day with just
her presence, his bodyguard who becomes more like his father, and Celia, the woman who has taken
care of Matt since he was made into a clone. He learns what it is like to live in a world full of social
hierarchy and in his adventure he goes from the top to the bottom and everywhere in between. He is
constantly being judged on who he is and is learning more about his identity, though mostly learns
about love and loyalty . In this adventure of The House of the Scorpions, Matt finds that loyalty with
friends is one of the most important things to have. Farmer shows many aspects that point to this
theme.
Matt experiences lots of loyalty and love when he is with Tam Lin. In the beginning of the book,
when Matt chooses Tam Lin to be his bodyguard, he did not know that he would also become his
best friend. Tam Lin would do anything for Matt, even if it includes saving his life, which he did.

The Pros And Cons Of Entitlement Theory
Basically Sen (1981), founded Entitlement theory on the assumption that the system under
consideration is an economy with private ownership and exchange in form of trade, exchange
between people and production and between man and nature. However, he also accepted social
benefits as entitlement relations. The theory is useful to explain poverty effects for different people
at household level with disaggregation of differences among the group in the population and people
even at the same household (Lenhardt, 2013). Hence, analysis using this theory implicates resources
allocation between households. Remittances being one external resources can have effects in the
final analysis using Entitlement Theory.
Ideally, there are strong linkages between poverty and environment also explicated in the
Entitlement Theory of poverty. Entitlement can be defined as collective outcome of environmental
resources package that the human capital used to produce, own and have power on that particular
resource as an individual or as a member of a given community or economic group. All have ability
to use those resources package ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It ignores cultural issues, which are similarly important with the legal system. However, entitlement
approach needs adjusting to new dynamics of contemporary analysis of poverty (Rubin, 2009).
In spite of those criticisms, the theory can be useful for analysing poverty and remittances especially
rural poverty since remittances are believed to be one of issues influencing entitlement and
ownership. Remittances can be used to buy assets. By owning assets, especially productive assets, it
increases chances for a individual or household to create wealth and it is widely agreed to be a
crucial factor in escaping and reduce chances to be trapped into poverty (Miller et. al.,

February– March 1859 in Bengal, when farmers refused to plant indigo in their fields as a protest
against exploitative farming under the British Raj.
The preface to the play addresses the numerous indigo planters who are offered the neel darpan (the
indigo mirror), 'so that they may take a look reflected in it'. In this play it reflects the social, political
and economic situations affected by the tyranny of the indigo planters which exploits the Indian
peasants.
The play is based on Mitra's experience as a postmaster in rural areas of Orissa and
Bengal. He saw the indigo farmer's oppression very closely. The trials of the peasants were not only
unjust but inhuman and exploitative in nature. Mitra wrote this play to raise a voice against the
indigo planters, jamindars and British officials. Gradually the message spread all around and the
voices of the peasants became the voice of the masses against the imperialism. This play's central
theme is the exploitation of

T-Shirts form Lubbok
It is very likely that our T–shirts are born near Lubbock, Texas, which is the known to be the
cottonest city in the whole world. Nelson Reinsch is a very successful cotton farmer. Him and his
wife Ruth tend to be seen as people whose minds are opening rather than closing as they approach
the ends of their lives. Producing cotton is no longer the exhausting physical process that it used to
be, but Nelson and Ruth still fight both the impulses of nature and the moods of the markets. Every
summer, they take on the different types of weathers they have to face and compete with cotton
farmers from over 70 countries. Nelson Reinsch 1,000 acres can produce about 500,000 pounds of
cotton lint if it is fully planted, which is enough for about 1.3 million T–shirts. Him ending his life

For over 200 years, The U.S. has been the certain leader of the global cotton industry. Poor countries
have a very small chance to catch up with all the challenges they face. The U.S. has dominantly

industries usually compete with countries that are similar to them. For example, U.S. forms compete
with Japanese automakers, German chemical companies, and Swiss pharmaceuticals. For climatic

How Does Dodger Affect Oliver's Life
Similar in the novel Oliver Twist, Oliver had characters that impacted his life greatly, which also
helped to develop his character further. Each of these characters being Dodger, Fagin and Mr.

How Does Nancy Farmer Use Descriptive Language In The...
Nancy Farmer's writing style is whimsical and descriptive. The descriptive language and good
transitions in the story the house of the scorpion by Nancy Farmer, develops the mood by using
similes, descriptive language, and figurative language. This say that the mood of the story is
futuristic and has a tiny hint of horror. First, she uses good vocabulary that hooks the reader and
makes them want to read on. In the story it says "It might even have a hazy desire for music or

hazy desire for music or crossword puzzles this also helps me infer that the whole book she uses
good descriptive language that helps her readers visualize what she

Analysis Of House Of Scorpions By Nancy Farmer
In the story House of Scorpions, written by Nancy Farmer, the main character is Matteo Alacran.
The main setting is in the future in a new "territory" between Mexico and the United States calle
Opium. In the beginning of the story, it starts of in a lab with a bunch of cells. Eventually they all
die, leaving one, who is believed to now be Matt. The main problem of the book is that Matt is a
clone, and that clones are considered filthy, retched creatures. The solution is that El Patron dies and
now Matt takes his place and is considered a real human. At the end of the story, Matt is the new
"Lord of Opium."
Celia is a very caring character in the story. There are three examples of this. First, she cared for
Matt by letting him live in her house. Secondly, she helped him escape from Rosa. She went to El
Patron and had Rosa turned into an eejit. Finally, she stood up for Matt so he wouldn't have to die
for El Patron. She risked her own life for Matt. She even played it off that she was an eejit. ... Show

Vernon Tull Character Traits
Vernon Tull is a fairly wealthy countryman who is friends with the Bundrens, often hiring the older
boys to do odd jobs for him. He is characterized as a helpful, kind man. Some characters think Tull
is very benevolent, always offering help to the family and assisting them whenever they are in
trouble, or in a state of distress. The family, however, is not always appreciative, as sometimes the
family refuses to acknowledge their need for succor. Tull knows the family really does need the
assistance, and does not let the family's brusqueness get in the way of his facilitation. Tull is
important in the novel because of Tull's caring nature towards the Bundren children and his

When Tull and Cora are talking about the incident at the river, and how Cash almost drowned, Cora
says the log was brought thereby God's will as punishment for Anse's lack of fathering ability. The
reader, through Tull, can see Cora's hypocritical nature, as Cora repeats that God is the only one that
can judge people yet is constantly criticizing the Bundrens throughout the novel (Faulkner). Tull,
too, is hypocritical, because he uses religion to pass judgment on Anse. When Vardaman comes to
Tull and describes a relationship between Addie and a fish, Tull believes this is nonsense, and
blames Anse, like Cora, for being an incompetent father (Faulkner). In addition to Cora's
characterization, the reader is better able to understand Jewel's nature because of Tull's narrations.
When Tull follows the family to the river, potentially to help them cross the dangerous waters, Jewel
is furious with the Tull's offer to help. This shows Jewel's independence as a strong individual, and
foreshadows a time later in the novel where Jewel will again show his independence. This
foreshadowing comes to fulfillment when Jewel absconds in order to avoid the sale of his beloved
horse. Nevertheless, Jewel does trade his horse for a team of mules and eventually returns to

Through Growing Up On A Family Farm In A Rural Community
Through growing up on a family farm in a rural community I have been fortunate enough to fall in

as we will discuss later they now offer soybeans and a technology platform. They are the 3rd largest

When you look at the product that is being advertised by AgriGold, you have to consider a few
different things when determining where it lies exactly within its life cycle. When you consider the
product to be seed corn itself, the product has reached maturity and is beginning to enter the
declining stage. What is meant by this is the fact that seed corn solely as a product has been sold for
centuries and has reached its maximum penetration point within the market (given that people
continue with their traditional crop–rotation strategies). Yet, I said that it is beginning to enter into
the declining stage. When I say that seed corn is beginning to enter the declining stage I am referring
to the fact that there is only a limited amount of land available to plant. As the populations grow,
there is less land that is used for agricultural purposes, which ultimately correlates into declining
demand for seed corn. While seed corn will always remain a very important and high value product,

Sixteen–year–old Callie and her twelve–year–old brother Jude went through several obstacles since
becoming foster kids. They were often separated from each other due to various reasons such as age
difference or simply most families looking to foster can only afford one child, they were also placed
in a few abusive households which was due to lack of care from those in charge of reviewing foster
parent's' applications. In one of the homes they were placed in Callie was put in a really difficult
situation which had a huge emotional toll on her that the trauma stuck with her for a few seasons.
Due to lack of love and affection from anyone in her life Callie fell victim to one of the sons in a
foster home she was placed in. Lucas the son manipulated her by giving her what she thought was
the love she craved although it involved verbal and physical abuse. He would be very controlling
and hit her and claim, "that is what love is" and Callie knew no better. It got to the extent where he
made her commit sexual acts against her will but at the time she didn't see anything wrong with it.
The son knew he would get away with it because if she told anyone being a foster child she would
be placed in juvey for committing sexual acts with a family member and be placed back in the
system. In another home Callie and Jude were placed in a home of two addicts who forced them to

violence often escalated and even got to the point where they both almost lost their lives because the

Oliver Twist
Have you ever thought about how it would be to live in a time of poverty? How would life be if you
were poor and did not know from where you would be getting your next meal? What would it be
like to be forced to live in a workhouse? These are some of the questions you might ask yourself if
you were living in early nineteenth century
England. Dickens addresses these issues in his timeless masterpiece Oliver Twist. In the story of
Oliver Twist, Dickens uses past experiences from his childhood and targets the Poor Law of 1834
which renewed the importance of the workhouse as a means of relief for the poor.

Charles Dickens was born in Landport, Portsea, on February 7, 1812. He was the second son of John
Dickens. John Dickens was a clerk in the Navy pay office. His improvidence would eventually lead
to imprisonment in the Marshalsea, a debtor's prison for debt (Hardy 41). As a child Charles
Dickens explored London and the fascination that he felt for this booming city remained with him
throughout his life (Rooke 15). Dickens received his first instruction from his mother and later
attended regular schools in
Chatham. When John Dickens, his wife, and their four children went to the debtor's prison, Charles
Dickens didn't go. He soon became intimate with his father's small collection of literary classics. He
also revealed early signs of genius. Dickens' recollections of early life were centered in Kent and he
often regarded himself as a member of that region (Kaste 9). Dickens was sent to work at the age of
twelve in Worren's Blacking Warehouse. After his father's release he went back to school.. When
school was complete he went to work in an attorney's office. He spent much of his time exploring
the busy and varied life of London and decided to become a journalist. He mastered a difficult

Summary Of Nancy Farmer's NovelThe House Of The Scorpion
Nancy Farmer's novel, The House of the Scorpion, is set in the not–too distant future that is similar
enough to our current world that it can be unsettling and eerie. It's like the present but flipped upside
down. The story walks us through places we know, but are given different names, which throws the
reader for a loop. It's a bit uncanny to think of places that are so familiar as different countries, with
name like Opium and Aztlan. As the reader travels through the story along with the characters, it
becomes clear that Nancy Farmer wanted her fictional world to resemble reality.
Further in the book, we come to learn that Opium is actually Arizona, the place that Nancy Farmer
was born. In the beginning of the novel, the readers are just as confused as Matt, the main character,
when it comes to the geography. Fortunately, Matt comes across a book, A History of Opium, that
informs both Matt and the reader more about this new world: "The MacGregors ruled the land near
San Diego, and the Alacrans had a vast empire stretching from central California all across Arizona
and into New Mexico. Gradually, Opium changes from no–man's–land to a real country. And its
supreme leader, dictator, and fuhrer was Matteo Alacran" (169–170 Farmer). It also comes to our
knowledge that Opium is a country ruled by drug lords that is wedged in between the United States
and Aztlan. It is also concluded that Opium is a dry, desert like place. The only plant that grows
there, aside from El Patron's

Anton Chekhov once said, "Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me through the glint of light on
broken glass". He was trying to show the importance of descriptive language in a story. It says that
instead of just saying what it is, describe it, or show it, to the reader. In the story The House of the
Scorpion by Nancy Farmer, the author uses descriptive language to develop the setting, and similes
and metaphors to develop the setting as well. There are many examples of descriptive language in
the book, so it makes you visualize what's happening in the story in detail. One example is, "The
surface of the sawdust combed smooth, the treasures hidden beneath marks that only he, the king,
understood." You can visualize the sawdust on ground,

Genetic Engineering: James Cameron And Nancy Farmer
Essay As the world is becoming more and more populated we have to think of new ways to sustain
life by possibly using cloning and genetic engineering. This text is going to examine how James
Cameron and Nancy Farmer portray Cloning, Genetic Engineering and how sustainability is evident.
Cloning and genetic engineering can both be used to sustain life on our planet but whether we can
put behind us the ethical concerns relating to them in order to sustain life is another story. All three
of these evident themes have a very similar underlying message in both of these examples. Genetic
engineering means the modification of of an organism by manipulating its genetic material. Both

Social sustainability is shown through Matt being a clone and not being treated as a human being
because of the excessive attention he gets from El patron and when the priest raged at him for being
in the church and kicking him out. "This unbaptised limb of Satan has no right to make a mockery
of this rite! Would you bring a dog to church". Another fact supporting social sustainability is that
Matt is not being treated properly by people he lives with. When matt cut his foot on glass and was
taken into the Elpatron estate and got medical attention but when they looked at his foot they
noticed it said "Property Of The Alaclran Estate" which made people treat him differently because
they now know he was a clone. The reason these are forms of social sustainability is because they
show that matt is not being treated with basic human rights and not being accepted by the
community. Environmental sustainability is shown through the futuristic city of Opium that House
of Scorpion is set in, the city is described with majorly polluted factories. Another fact is that the
eejits live in slums that are over populated and polluted with radioactive material through this you
can see how they have not created a sustainable environment for the future there fore leading to the
creation of cloning and genetically modified objects in the

remain the same but with the discovery corn for energy it has made it a hot commodity and very

can be used to produce energy. These farmers are going to slow down their productions of corn for
corn oil and increase the production of corn for energy because it is the more profitable thing to do
and its makes perfect business sense. Now the demand for the corn oil remains the same, but the
productions for it has slowed greatly if not stopped, this means that farmers and corn producers will

have a longer shelf life until another year or harvest comes around.

Then Nancy has a discussion with Fagin and later overhears a conversation between him and Monks

Analysis Of Charles Dickens 's ' Dickens '
Does One 's Environment Have the Ability to Blacken the Soul?
"With difficulty, on her knees, drew from her bosom a white handkerchief – Rose May–lie 's own –
and holding it up, in her folded hands, as high towards Heaven as her feeble strength would allow,
breathed one [last] prayer for mercy towards her Maker" (Oliver Twist, Dickens 302 revised).
Throughout Oliver Twist, Charles Dickens uses his characters and props to symbolize purity, even
though the environment would seem to denote everything and everyone. Incontro–vertibly, some
certainly conform to their environment; for example, as part of the lower class, Fagin and Sikes turn
to thieving, lying, and even murder, instead of earning an honest living. Throughout the first half of
the book, Dickens leads one to believe Nancy follows the same pat–tern. However, as the plot
develops, the reader 's theories and opinions transform. Continuing on, the reader will find the
answer to the dispute Dickens constantly toys with; does one 's environ–ment have the ability to

Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, on the Southern coast of England. He was brought up in a

Starbucks Importance

  • 1. Starbucks Importance Starbucks should have, like all big companies, a good image for such a huge company that is located in 70 countries with over 24,000 stores. Like many other companies, Starbucks gets thousands of customers everyday and that is why it's important that Starbucks build better relationships. Starbucks creating jobs, supporting farmers, and taking care of the environment in third world countries is important. It's comforting to know when you purchase a drink from Starbucks, you are helping others with newly created jobs and improving the community. Starbucks has given 8,000 veterans and 10,000 young people jobs and with almost 20,000 created jobs, how could it not be important? Not only do they create jobs, they help farmers with the "Farmer Loan ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Viewing the Youtube video gives out a positive feeling that you're being involved with someone else and helping them when you purchase something from a Starbucks. This approach to vertising is effective and clever and with over 15 million views on the Youtube video, many have seen the Youtube video and even commented positive remarks like "dang. that definitely will make me go to Starbucks more" and "Best coffee shop in the world and all of its stores served me with great quality from Jordan to Texas to NY to Cana to Mrid to Barcelona to Saudi Arabia. Best of luck and keep it up! ". The commenter even acknowledged that the advertisement worked on him and will definitely be going to Starbucks more. These comments show appreciation for Starbucks' participation in the community and just proves that it worked on getting the consumers happy and wanting more. Starbucks' approach is a win–win situation where they help others and in return, they help Starbucks. I, like others who also viewed their site, get a positive feeling from looking on the Starbucks sites but the Starbucks video, however, did not deliver a positive feeling. The video also felt as if they were bragging by showcasing their achievements. Starbucks is marketing itself as a company that helps society, communities, and diversity to benefit society by listing all the accomplishments they have achieved. This method of vertising is helping society immensely with thousands of people with new jobs and create new opportunities for farmers. Starbucks also benefits from people who view these programs that Starbucks create and are convinced to purchase more drinks or food from Starbucks. Although their actions are for good, using third world countries as a way of humbly bragging isn't. Ultimately, Starbucks' ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Locavore 's Dilemma By Christophe Pelletire How would you feel about only eating the food that is 100 miles within the distance that you live? Would you be able to do it every single day? Within 100 miles of where you currently living, do you have access to fresh meat products, seafood, dairy products, fresh fruit, and vegetables products? If you drink coffee, are coffee beans readily available within that area? What about chocolate or coco, are coco beans grown nearby? Are you in an area where corn and wheat are grown where you can produce all the carbohydrates like cereal, bread, and pastries that you consume regularly? What about sugar cane or sugar beats, the main sources of sugar used in soda, candy, and other sweet products? Locavores are people who only eat local food that is grown within a 100 miles from where they live. What effect does this have on people who come to visit and have to eat food that is only local food? In the article "The Locavore's Dilemma," author Christophe Pelletire's skillful presentation of his ethos overshadows his less successful portrayal of pathos for locavores and logos concerning the topic about locavores. Pelletire shows his pathos for the quality of food, shows ethos by giving the readers many examples of the types of resources people would lose, and shows his logos by providing his story with data he collected while physically living in Vancouver. In the article, the author is most successful in his presentation of the appeal of ethos, due to all the information he can give ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The House Of The Scorpion By Nancy Farmer In the story The House of the Scorpion, written by Nancy Farmer, the main character is Matt, who is a clone of El Patron. The main setting of the story is in the Mexican area in the future. In the beginning of the story, Matt only knows one other person and only one person knows about him, that person is Celia. The main problem in the story is that when Matt finally gets exposed to other people, he finds out he's a clone and also finds out that most people despise of clones. The solution is that during El Patron's funeral, everyone with some sort of power dies with the wine that El Patron demanded they'd drink when he dies. At the end of the story, Matt is technically not a clone anymore, because El Patron is dead. Matt should not be treated poorly just because he's a clone. The only time, when people are somewhat nice to him is when El Patron is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I feel as if Matt and I are very good at being taken advantage of by others. "A more evil, vicious, and self serving man could hardly be imagined, wrote Esperanza on the next line." (pg. 170) Matt dismissed the details saying that El Patron was evil because he couldn't believe someone he loved could be evil and he thought Esperanza was just jealous of El Patron because of what a "genius" he was. The truth is that Esperanza had already seen how evil El Patron's ways were, and Matt just hadn't realized them yet because he thought of El Patron as a perfect god who would never hurt him. "I'm not supposed to talk about it, but yes, I do know where he got it! And it's evil!" (pg.208) In this case, Maria was trying to warn and help Matt understand what his sad fate would be but he didn't want to see why she was so concerned because he truly believed his fate would be to help run the empire, when it really was for him to be used for transplants. • 7. Examples Of Discrimination In Frankenstein Discrimination in Frankenstein Frankenstein is a book that explores society and human behavior when someone different is introduced. It says that humans are not always willing to introduce someone new to their society. Have you ever discriminated against someone or been discriminated against because you were different? Frankenstein is a book that explores difference in a society, to explore this theme a monster is created to give the idea of rejection. This monster is rejected everywhere he goes because of his difference. He is rejected by his creator, and then he is rejected by the villagers, by the farmers who the monster had so long admired and in the end by the reader himself. "Unable to endure the aspect of the being I had created, I rushed out of the room". ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Victor had worked day and night trying to create an individual that would be and would look like a human. Once Victor had finished creating this monster he realized how not human alike the monster was and decided to reject him. This was a sign by the author to show the rejection of the monster by the creator and how no one even the creator accepts the monster because of the way he is and the way he looks. This happens in our modern world today as many parents do not accept their child because of his ideas and future plans. "The whole village was roused; some fled, some attacked me2 Wherever he goes, the monster cannot find a person who accepts his way of being. This is shown in the different villages the monster visits. we see that the monster is attacked and harassed by the villagers. The rejection of the monster by the villagers is a symbol of rejection as it may happen when someone is introduced to a new culture which does not accept him. • 9. Remember The Most Important Day Of The Day It was a cold Friday morning in suburbia when Nancy had woken up to a loud drilling across the street. There were children rushing to school with their bags weighing them down and parents on their mobile phones trying to explain to their coworkers why they were running late. It looked like a somewhat normal end to the week. As Nancy pulled back the curtain, she saw a builder bent over drilling into the pavement with his crack on show. She sighed and laid back down. It was only until Nancy looked towards the poster across the room of the Hocus Pocus movie that it suddenly dawned on her. She smiled as she remembered it was Halloween! How did she forget? How did she not remember the most important day of the year? Jumping up with excitement Nancy head toward the cupboard next to the poster where her wand was and chuckled "TODAY IS THE DAY!" What was the day and what was going to happen? Nancy was known to be a grumpy thirty five year old living in the suburbs of New York. She wasn't well known however she was known for her inability to exchange pleasantries in the neighbourhood. Nancy got downstairs and found a stack of things to do. She was a housewife. Her husband was a corporate boss working in the city and she was the stay at home wife. This was by choice so she could work her magic during the day and while he was asleep at night. Lately things seemed to be dreary in the Brown household. Her husband Quinn would sleep in their bed while Nancy would stay downstairs watching ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The House Of Scorpion Character Analysis In the story "The House of Scorpion", written by Nancy Farmer, the main characters are Matteo Alacran who is a clone from El Patron. Matteo was made by a scientist in lab in the mexican border. Another main character is Matt's caregiver which is a woman named Celia, where she worked at the Big House. Lastly, the third main character is El Patron, who is a powerful drug lord of opium in mexico. The main settings is in the future where they now know the knowledge of cloning. The main problem is that Matt is a clone and this makes Matt bad and unwanted to the "normal" people. This makes Matt a bad person because he is not normal to hang around with people. Also, the conflict is that El Patron is using Matt as a way to stay alive. At the end of the story, Matt was now older and became leader of Mexico and opium. Another detail the happened at the end of the story is the everyone died except Celia, Mr. Ortega, Matt's music teacher, and Daft Donald, who is a bodyguard of El Patron. My opinion on Celia is that she is a fearless, amorous, and smart because she doesn't mind talking about life situations, she loves Matt although other people don't and knows lots of duties. The three reasons I think these traits follow with Celia is that in the book, "The House of the Scorpion" on page 125 it states "I'm not supposed to talk to you about this." This shows that Celia doesn't mind talking about things she wasn't supposed to. This also shows she's not scared to talk about situations that Matt saw while telling the truth and not lying to him. Another trait Celia has is amorous because on page 10 it states "I love you more than anything in the world." Lastly, she's smart because on page 142 it quotes "She taught me all kinds of things." This quote reminds me of my dad, because my dad is very talented in many ways and taught me lots of things that are useful in life. Based on a judgement, one prediction that I can refer on this story is that Matt will become leader of Mexico and opium after El Patron dies and everyone will love him. Another thing I possibly believe that Matt will do is, free people who were treated as slaves. One thing I believe that will change or become different is, the hatred of clones after seeing how ... • 13. The Inspirational Nature of Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens Oliver Twist is a popular book written by Charles Dickens among many others such as David Copperfield and A Christmas Carol. Charles Dickens wrote many short stories, plays, novels, fiction, and nonfiction stories during his lifetime. He wrote a lot about the different types of people in the world, especially about the poor. This type of writing showed in the book Oliver Twist. This book is told by a 3rd omniscient narrator. Oliver Twist is the main character in this book as the story is based around his life. He is an orphan boy who is in need of a good home. He lives in a workhouse at first and escapes right away to look for better living conditions. The story of Oliver's life is a main part of the whole book. Mr. Brownlow and Fagin are just a couple that are mentioned more than others throughout the book. Mr. Brownlow is a kind old gentleman that ends up taking care of Oliver. He is very important in the story because he is the character that figures out the story behind Oliver's life. The Brownlow household is the first place that Oliver has actually liked to be and not wanted to escape. Oliver felt safe there after he had escaped the group of thieves he had run across that was led by Fagin. Fagin was a thieve, murderer, and robber. His plan was to make a bad kid out of Oliver, but by the end of the book that wasn't going to happen. Fagin was a big part of the book because once Oliver had escaped

  • 16. Oliver Twist By Charles Dickens Essay Introduction From the end of the eighteenth century to the start of the nineteenth century, London was a city with a high wrongdoing rate. From 1745 to 1820, there were 115,000 individuals who made their living by theft, prostitution, cheat and other criminal acts. It is terrible when we realize that the aggregate populace of London around then was only 960,000. Probably there was no other author in Victoria time that had such an in number worry about wrongdoing, and fused such a great amount of depiction of wrongdoing in his functions as Charles Dickens (1812– 1870) did. Oliver Twist was the second novel of Dickens distributed in a serial structure in a magazine titled Bentleyʼs Miscellany run independent from anyone else from February 1837 to April 1839 when Dickens was still a columnist. In England, from the 1830s to the 1840s, a lot of wrongdoing books were distributed. Oliver Twist was composed simply During that period. Most faultfinders and book commentators of Dickens ' lifetime based their surveys of Oliver Twist on one standard: how reasonable this novel was. Particularly, depictions of a group of lawbreakers in London in this novel pulled in consideration and were the engaging point for quite a while. Oliver Twist builds associations between the criminal characters themselves and additionally this present reality conditions which motivated their generalizations. • 20. The Mystery Of Liars By Nancy Farmer Ever since we were young we were shunned away from telling lies and were taught that it was wrong. Why is it that lying was immoral, but then as we grow up we drift away from that lesson? Many can say that we are cowards who hide behind our lies. Today there exist a white lie which states that you are telling a lie to help someone. Why do we teach our kids that lying is bad when adults lie all the time? In the quote Nancy Farmer compares the liars to rats who are cowards that hides and runs around in dark places because looking at the word lying it can gives off a vibe of a dark and lonely place. Just like rats who runs and hides in dark places, liars are basically hiding behind the shadows and living alone in their lie. From the quote I agree and disagree with the quote, where I agreed with the quote that liars are basically rats who hides and run from the truth, they don't care if it's unpleasant to others and see lying as an escape route from trouble. Where I disagree is they can't be called cowards because they might be telling a white lie and instead of being unpleasant, it can actually help the person that is receiving the lie. Getting told a lie is a very unpleasant feeling for some while for others. They have a stronger mentality and can withstand being told a lie. Personally in my opinion, being told a lie makes one feel as if they can't trust the person anymore due to the fact that they are hiding something. For the person receiving the lie it is much more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. Charles Dickens Essay Biographical Summary Charles Dickens is one of the most influential writers in history and was "born in Landport, now part of Portsmouth, on February 7th, 1812"(Priestly 5). Despite being the successful writer that he was in life, Dickens had very humble beginnings and because his Father, John Huffman Dickens, "lacked the money to support his family adequetly" , Dickens lived in poverty through out most of his childhood (Collins). Matters only got worse, however, when Dickens's Father had to "spen[d] time in prison for debt" causing Dickens to have to "work in a London factory pasting labels on bottles of shoe polish" (Collins). It was a horrible experience for him, but it also helped him to no doubt feel pity for the poor, which is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dickens, at the beginning of his life, was very optimistic, his novels having "serious themes and plots" but also having "enough humor to keep [them] entertaining" (Collins). Later on in life, however, Dickens writing became less lighthearted, with his "view of Victorian society, and perhaps of the world, [having grown] darker" and his "character and plots seem[ing] to emphasize the evil side of human experience" more and more (Collins). Since Dickens style of writing was mostly influenced by his experiences, this change in style most likely resulted from negative experiences in his life which every person tends to experience as they get older. Dickens had to abandon some of the optimism that he had held on to in youth, which is something that usually happens as one experience life more and the weight of the world is felt more on one's shoulders. In Dickens case, this weight was Victorian society and all its vices which he had high hopes to escape from when on "on January 4, 1842, Dickens and his wife boarded the steamer Britannia" to go to Boston in America (Lepore). Dickens, like most people at the time, probably had an ideal picture of America and most likely saw the country as a paradise against some of the old world's plagues and problems. When he arrived at America his fantasies were not met, and he would often write home saying things like "this is not the Republic [he] came to see" and how "this [was] not the Republic of [his] imagination"(Lepore). ... • 24. Labors And Slavery During The Gilded Age During the Gilded Age both labors and farmers had very strong reasons to have these complaints. Labors were treated as minorities, controlled by their bosses and weren't getting paid what they deserved so this led to the unionizations, strikes and vandalisms. Farmers were in declined because bigger farms were taking over and they were getting less money. They didn't understand why this was happening if they had new machines, so this led to the Green Revolution and several political activities. However, these complaints that both labors and farmers have, have their similarities and differences. Labors did not have very good wages and it was problem during the Gilded Age. Labors' had to live by paternalism, meaning that George Pullman owned them. It seems as if labors never got a profit for the long hours that they worked in the sweatshops. All the money goes straight back to Pullman, because they had to pay for rent and their goods and groceries provided by him. So basically, Pullman didn't consider them valuable because there was always someone looking for a job. These reasons led to several unionizations like the Knights of Labor where they had to pay their dues to go on strike and fight for them. Anyone from radical to bosses could join this union except bankers and lawyers, which made no sense. They fought for workplace rights but where they did wrong is when they demanded outside workplace rights such as free public schools for their children. This union caused deaths ... • 29. Great Expectations And Oliver Twist Analysis People tend naively see orphans and those without caring families as hopeless and loveless creatures. However, the goodness of strangers can easily prove these thoughts nonsensical as people can provide an abundance of support and love to those with no blood relation to them and can embrace strangers as family. In Charles Dickens' two novels Great Expectations and Oliver Twist, Dickens challenges the typical idea of parentage and suggests the through love and generosity anyone can become a guardian or mentor figure. Therefore, people should not place as much faith in blood relations and look to others for sources of guidance and compassion. Although bloodlines seemed to dictate who raised whom in the 1830s, children could find guidance through those closest to them regardless of their non familial relationship. In Oliver Twist, Dickens provides numerous figures to guide poor Oliver, none of which are related to him by blood, excepting Rose. After falling ill and denounced as a thief, Mr. Brownlow and the housekeeper bestow great kindness and tender care upon Oliver and nurture him as though he was their child:"'I have never forgotten them or his quiet smile, but have seen them every day, side by side with those of my own children'" (388). The housekeeper especially gives motherly attention to Oliver although she has no prior relation to him. She compares Oliver to her memories of her own progeny and therefore blatantly stands in as a mother figure in Oliver's life. By ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"But you were only loaned to me, Mi Vida" (Farmer 12). This demonstrates Celia's job is to take care of Matt, not to become a mother figure. For example, when Matt calls her his mother she gets very angry because that was not her task. Also, Celia has cared for Matt more than anybody in Opium ever did. • 33. Toward A Recovery Of Nineteenth Century Farming Handbooks... Toward a Recovery of Nineteenth Century Farming Handbooks While researching texts written about nineteenth century farming, I found a few authors who published books about the literature of nineteenth century farming, particularly agricultural journals, newspapers, pamphlets, and brochures. These authors often placed the farming literature they were studying into an historical context by discussing the important events in agriculture of the year in which the literature was published (see Demaree, for example). However, while these authors discuss journals, newspapers, pamphlets, and brochures, I could not find much discussion about another important source of farming knowledge: farming handbooks. My goal in this paper is to bring this source into the agricultural literature discussion by connecting three agricultural handbooks from the nineteenth century with nineteenth century agricultural history. To achieve this goal, I have organized my paper into four main sections, two of which have sub– sections. In the first section, I provide an account of three important events in nineteenth century agricultural history: population and technological changes, the distribution of scientific new knowledge, and farming's influence on education. In the second section, I discuss three nineteenth century farming handbooks in connection with the important events described in the first section. I end my paper with a third section that offers research questions that could be answered in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The House of the Scorpion is a dystopian fiction novel written by Nancy Farmer, is about a clone, named Matt, of the powerful drug lord, El Patron. When he is brought into a world ruled by El Patron, he is hated by everyone in the big house, except for a sweet girl named Maria, who lightens Matt's day with just her presence, his bodyguard who becomes more like his father, and Celia, the woman who has taken care of Matt since he was made into a clone. He learns what it is like to live in a world full of social hierarchy and in his adventure he goes from the top to the bottom and everywhere in between. He is constantly being judged on who he is and is learning more about his identity, though mostly learns about love and loyalty . In this adventure of The House of the Scorpions, Matt finds that loyalty with friends is one of the most important things to have. Farmer shows many aspects that point to this theme. Matt experiences lots of loyalty and love when he is with Tam Lin. In the beginning of the book, when Matt chooses Tam Lin to be his bodyguard, he did not know that he would also become his best friend. Tam Lin would do anything for Matt, even if it includes saving his life, which he did. • 39. The Pros And Cons Of Entitlement Theory Basically Sen (1981), founded Entitlement theory on the assumption that the system under consideration is an economy with private ownership and exchange in form of trade, exchange between people and production and between man and nature. However, he also accepted social benefits as entitlement relations. The theory is useful to explain poverty effects for different people at household level with disaggregation of differences among the group in the population and people even at the same household (Lenhardt, 2013). Hence, analysis using this theory implicates resources allocation between households. Remittances being one external resources can have effects in the final analysis using Entitlement Theory. Ideally, there are strong linkages between poverty and environment also explicated in the Entitlement Theory of poverty. The Idea Of Nationalism And The Indigo Planting Mirror Introduction on The idea of nationalism in the colonial world in Deenabandhu Mitra's Neel –Darpan Neel Darpan; or The Indigo Planting Mirror is a Bengali play written by Dinabandhu Mitra in 1858–1859. The play was essential to Neelbidraha, or Indigo revolt of February– March 1859 in Bengal, when farmers refused to plant indigo in their fields as a protest against exploitative farming under the British Raj. The preface to the play addresses the numerous indigo planters who are offered the neel darpan (the indigo mirror), 'so that they may take a look reflected in it'. In this play it reflects the social, political and economic situations affected by the tyranny of the indigo planters which exploits the Indian peasants. The play is based on Mitra's experience as a postmaster in rural areas of Orissa and Bengal. He saw the indigo farmer's oppression very closely. The trials of the peasants were not only unjust but inhuman and exploitative in nature. Mitra wrote this play to raise a voice against the indigo planters, jamindars and British officials. Gradually the message spread all around and the voices of the peasants became the voice of the masses against the imperialism. This play's central theme is the exploitation of ... They were often separated from each other due to various reasons such as age difference or simply most families looking to foster can only afford one child, they were also placed in a few abusive households which was due to lack of care from those in charge of reviewing foster parent's' applications. In one of the homes they were placed in Callie was put in a really difficult situation which had a huge emotional toll on her that the trauma stuck with her for a few seasons. Due to lack of love and affection from anyone in her life Callie fell victim to one of the sons in a foster home she was placed in. Lucas the son manipulated her by giving her what she thought was the love she craved although it involved verbal and physical abuse. He would be very controlling and hit her and claim, "that is what love is" and Callie knew no better. It got to the extent where he made her commit sexual acts against her will but at the time she didn't see anything wrong with it. The son knew he would get away with it because if she told anyone being a foster child she would be placed in juvey for committing sexual acts with a family member and be placed back in the system. In another home Callie and Jude were placed in a home of two addicts who forced them to do all the house chores. The father was never sober, and it was a very toxic household to live in. The violence often escalated and even got to the point where they both almost lost their lives because the father of the household owned a gun and attacked them one night while ... • 61. Oliver Twist Essay example Oliver Twist Have you ever thought about how it would be to live in a time of poverty? How would life be if you were poor and did not know from where you would be getting your next meal? What would it be like to be forced to live in a workhouse? These are some of the questions you might ask yourself if you were living in early nineteenth century England. Dickens addresses these issues in his timeless masterpiece Oliver Twist. In the story of Oliver Twist, Dickens uses past experiences from his childhood and targets the Poor Law of 1834 which renewed the importance of the workhouse as a means of relief for the poor. Dickens' age was a period of industrial development marked by the rise of the middle class (Wagenknecht ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The 1840s were years of crises. The character on English life was being transformed by industrial expansion and by great movements of population towards urban life. Charles Dickens was born in Landport, Portsea, on February 7, 1812. He was the second son of John Dickens. John Dickens was a clerk in the Navy pay office. His improvidence would eventually lead to imprisonment in the Marshalsea, a debtor's prison for debt (Hardy 41). As a child Charles Dickens explored London and the fascination that he felt for this booming city remained with him throughout his life (Rooke 15). Dickens received his first instruction from his mother and later attended regular schools in Chatham. When John Dickens, his wife, and their four children went to the debtor's prison, Charles Dickens didn't go. He soon became intimate with his father's small collection of literary classics. He also revealed early signs of genius. Dickens' recollections of early life were centered in Kent and he often regarded himself as a member of that region (Kaste 9). Dickens was sent to work at the age of twelve in Worren's Blacking Warehouse. After his father's release he went back to school.. When school was complete he went to work in an attorney's office. • 63. Summary Of Nancy Farmer's NovelThe House Of The Scorpion Nancy Farmer's novel, The House of the Scorpion, is set in the not–too distant future that is similar enough to our current world that it can be unsettling and eerie. It's like the present but flipped upside down. The story walks us through places we know, but are given different names, which throws the reader for a loop. It's a bit uncanny to think of places that are so familiar as different countries, with name like Opium and Aztlan. As the reader travels through the story along with the characters, it becomes clear that Nancy Farmer wanted her fictional world to resemble reality. Further in the book, we come to learn that Opium is actually Arizona, the place that Nancy Farmer was born. In the beginning of the novel, the readers are just as confused as Matt, the main character, when it comes to the geography. Fortunately, Matt comes across a book, A History of Opium, that informs both Matt and the reader more about this new world: "The MacGregors ruled the land near San Diego, and the Alacrans had a vast empire stretching from central California all across Arizona and into New Mexico. Gradually, Opium changes from no–man's–land to a real country. And its supreme leader, dictator, and fuhrer was Matteo Alacran" (169–170 Farmer). It also comes to our knowledge that Opium is a country ruled by drug lords that is wedged in between the United States and Aztlan. It is also concluded that Opium is a dry, desert like place. The only plant that grows there, aside from El Patron's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Descriptive Language In The House Of The Scorpion By Nancy... Anton Chekhov once said, "Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me through the glint of light on broken glass". He was trying to show the importance of descriptive language in a story. It says that instead of just saying what it is, describe it, or show it, to the reader. In the story The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer, the author uses descriptive language to develop the setting, and similes and metaphors to develop the setting as well. There are many examples of descriptive language in the book, so it makes you visualize what's happening in the story in detail. One example is, "The surface of the sawdust combed smooth, the treasures hidden beneath marks that only he, the king, understood." You can visualize the sawdust on ground, ... Genetic Engineering: James Cameron And Nancy Farmer Essay As the world is becoming more and more populated we have to think of new ways to sustain life by possibly using cloning and genetic engineering. This text is going to examine how James Cameron and Nancy Farmer portray Cloning, Genetic Engineering and how sustainability is evident. Cloning and genetic engineering can both be used to sustain life on our planet but whether we can put behind us the ethical concerns relating to them in order to sustain life is another story. All three of these evident themes have a very similar underlying message in both of these examples. Genetic engineering means the modification of of an organism by manipulating its genetic material. Both James Cameron and Nancy Farmer use some form of genetic engineering ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Social sustainability is shown through Matt being a clone and not being treated as a human being because of the excessive attention he gets from El patron and when the priest raged at him for being in the church and kicking him out. "This unbaptised limb of Satan has no right to make a mockery of this rite! Would you bring a dog to church". Another fact supporting social sustainability is that Matt is not being treated properly by people he lives with. When matt cut his foot on glass and was taken into the Elpatron estate and got medical attention but when they looked at his foot they noticed it said "Property Of The Alaclran Estate" which made people treat him differently because they now know he was a clone. The reason these are forms of social sustainability is because they show that matt is not being treated with basic human rights and not being accepted by the community. Environmental sustainability is shown through the futuristic city of Opium that House of Scorpion is set in, the city is described with majorly polluted factories. Another fact is that the eejits live in slums that are over populated and polluted with radioactive material through this you can see how they have not created a sustainable environment for the future there fore leading to the creation of cloning and genetically modified objects in the ... This would create and elastic effect on the corn market because the huge demand for corn oil will remain the same but with the discovery corn for energy it has made it a hot commodity and very profitable amongst farmers therefore corn oil would take a back seat for now until other resources can be used to produce energy. These farmers are going to slow down their productions of corn for corn oil and increase the production of corn for energy because it is the more profitable thing to do and its makes perfect business sense. Now the demand for the corn oil remains the same, but the productions for it has slowed greatly if not stopped, this means that farmers and corn producers will need to raise the price of corn for corn products so they will be able to stay on the market longer and have a longer shelf life until another year or harvest comes around. • 75. Analysis Of Charles Dickens 's ' Dickens ' Does One 's Environment Have the Ability to Blacken the Soul? "With difficulty, on her knees, drew from her bosom a white handkerchief – Rose May–lie 's own – and holding it up, in her folded hands, as high towards Heaven as her feeble strength would allow, breathed one [last] prayer for mercy towards her Maker" (Oliver Twist, Dickens 302 revised). Throughout Oliver Twist, Charles Dickens uses his characters and props to symbolize purity, even though the environment would seem to denote everything and everyone. Incontro–vertibly, some certainly conform to their environment; for example, as part of the lower class, Fagin and Sikes turn to thieving, lying, and even murder, instead of earning an honest living. Throughout the first half of the book, Dickens leads one to believe Nancy follows the same pat–tern. However, as the plot develops, the reader 's theories and opinions transform. Continuing on, the reader will find the answer to the dispute Dickens constantly toys with; does one 's environ–ment have the ability to blacken the soul and affect one 's choices? Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, on the Southern coast of England. He was brought up in a poor household so indebted that his father, John Dickens, was sent to jail. In 1827, at the age of 15, Dickens was working, attending the theater, and taking acting lessons. In 1836 (age 24), Dickens published his very first book entitled Sketches by Boz. • 77. Analysis Of The House Of The Scorpion By Nancy Farmer In the story, The House of the Scorpion, written by Nancy Farmer, the main character is Matt Alacran. The main setting is the empire of Opium. In the beginning of the story, a scientist creates Matt with great caution and fear. The main problem or conflict in the book is that Matt is a clone of El Patrón, the feared drug lord of Opium. The solution is El Patrón dies and Matt runs away to Aztlán to stay safe. At the end of the story Matt is now the leader of Opium and must take care of all of El Patrón's duties since everyone died at his funeral. First of all, I think that El Patrón is an evil, cruel, and selfish person because he thinks he's entitled, killed his family and friends so he wasn't lonely in the afterlife, and created the eejits even though he didn't want to take care of him. The text states, "There were eight of us,' said El Patrón, 'and only I lived to grow up. Don't you think I'm owed those lives?" In the story, it says, "He did, however, keep listening to Felicia's music. It was something that had gotten inside him, and no matter how dangerous it was, he couldn't go long without hearing it."When Matt listens to music, he gets lost in that feeling. When I start listening to music it's like there is nothing else in the world going on around me. I get so caught up in the music that sometimes i spend hours just listening to ... Kenny treats people better than Byron by, sharing his lunch with a boy named Rufus and Rufus' brother, Cody. Another reason Kenny treats people better is, Kenny does not like to see people getting beat up, he just walks away. Also, L.J. (Kenny's "friend") started stealing from Kenny but, he kept playing with him. Kenny treats people better than Byron because, he shared his lunch with Rufus. When Kenny shared his lunch, he had the choice of keeping it himself, but instead he chose to give half of it to Rufus. Kenny saw that Rufus did not eat all the sandwich. He then later saw that he gave the other part of the sandwich to Rufus' little brother, Cody. Everyday after that, Kenny gave Rufus part of his sandwich, and Rufus gave part of his sandwich to Cody. One day, Kenny told his mom about giving Rufus and Cody half of his sandwich. Then, Kenny's mom started packing 3 sandwiches and 3 apples for Kenny, Rufus, and Cody.
