Life Well–Lived Experience
Andini Effendi
A dear friend couldn't help to gasp when I uttered my plan on taking two years off from career to
pursue master degree abroad. I remember her words vividly, "So you will leave your spot to
someone younger, brighter and most probably hotter just like that?" I also remember what was my
answer; it was simply "yes." Don't get me wrong I absolutely love my job. So much love as if I am
married to my work. I am the living example of someone whose her passion becomes a profession.
For me working it's like playing. There were never a dull moment. But then I came to a point where
I desired something more that would make me feel whole. It was education. I craved so much to

Pierre L Enfant's Influence On American Culture
The culture of the United States of America is chiefly of European culture, but it is influenced by
many other cultures as well. In addition to Native Americans who were already living on the
continent, the population of the United States was built on immigration from other countries. Since
so many different kinds of people immigrated to the United States, America is one of the most
culturally diverse countries in the world. Practically every region of the world has influenced
American culture in some way. The region that has influenced the United States the most is the
English, who colonized America in the early 1600s. America is sometimes called the "melting pot".
This term is used as a metaphor describing a fusion of nationalities, cultures and ... Show more

An example of what they have done for us is the building of the capital in Washington, D.C.
Washington owes much of its sole design to the Frenchman, Pierre Charles L'Enfant. When
Washington, D.C. was established, President Washington chose an area of land measuring one
hundred square miles where the Anacostia River met the Potomac just north of Mount Vernon,
Georgetown. The new nation of America needed a federal center with space dedicated to
government buildings. The President asked Pierre L'Enfant, an established architect, to survey the
area and recommend locations for buildings and streets. L'Enfant arrived in Georgetown on a rainy
night in March 1791 and immediately got to work. L'Enfant designed the city from scratch, he
imagined and put to life a grand capital of wide avenues, public squares and additional buildings in
what was then plantations, marshes, forests, and hills. The Frenchman placed Congress on a high
point with a commanding view of the Potomac River. He made the Capitol Hill the center of the
city. L' Enfant designed wide boulevards for easy transportation across town and offered views of
important buildings and common squares from great distances. Public squares and park were also

Arch Of Titus
Rome had many significant works of art. The Arch of Titus was one of them. The Arch of Titus was
a Roman Triumphal art that was constructed by Domitian in 81 C.E. in Via Sacra, Rome in the foot
of the Palatine hill. The Arch of Titus was constructed to commemorate the victories of Titus and
Vespasian in the Jewish war. The Jewish war began because Judea was ruled by the Romans and
they had no respect towards the Jewish religious traditions. After Judea being ruled by Rome and the
struggle over the blending of Greek and Jewish traditions it exploded into war. The war was led by
Titus, who conquered Jerusalem and destroyed Jerusalem temple. It was also a political and
religious statement that expresses the divinity of Titus. The Arch was made out of Pentelic marble.

The Arch of Titus was 51' high and is the smallest Arch in Rome. The arch has sculpture scenes on
the sides of the relief panels. Relief panels are very significant in the history and development of
Roman art because it was the first time sculptures used the illusion of space. This is shown in
various ways; the figures are presented in three–quarter view, background figures are so rendered
that they fade slowly into the distance, the central relief are carved in a higher relief, and the whole
panel is curved inwards. The marble reliefs are set on the either side of the inner arch and it
measures 2.04 m high by 3.85 long. The inscription that is located in the east side of arch were

New York City is the most populous and largest city in USA. It consists of five boroughs:
Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx. New York City is composed of five
boroughs, an unusual form of government. Each borough is coextensive with a respective county of
New York State as shown below. Throughout the boroughs there are hundreds of distinct
neighborhoods, many with a definable history and character to call their own. If the boroughs were
each independent cities, four of the boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and The Bronx (Bronx

Film Review : The Heiress And Henry James's Washington Square
Henry James's novel, Washington Square, was the inspiration for both movies: The Heiress by
William Wyler, and Washington Square by Agnieszka Holland. Although these films did not follow
James's novel precisely, they still capture the audience and show self–development for main
character Catherine. Laurence Raw and Karen Michele Chandler each wrote articles regarding the
film adaptations in comparison to Washington Square. In Raw's article "Reconstructing Henry
James: The Heiress", he analyzes scenes from The Heiress alongside a Broadway adaptation written
by Augustus Goetz. Furthermore, Raw examines problems during filming and the stature of James
throughout his career. Meanwhile, in Chandler's essay "Her Ancient Faculty of Silence", she
discusses The Heiress and Holland's Washington Square, addressing aspects distinct from the novel.
Additionally, Chandler describes how each film overcomes female subjectivity while examining
silence and cultural negation that develop Catherine's empowerment.
Raw begins his article stating other's opinions on replicating James's novel into a film. Moreover, he
outlines the challenges of the adapting process and suggests "filmmakers need a radical
interpretation and a structure of their own to retain direction, shape, or dynamics" (243). Although
James was initially unappreciative of his Washington square, many academics admired his profound
writing abilities. However, critics had conflicting views, visualizing James as a failed screenplay

The Characteristics Of Catherine InWashington Square, By...
The novel, Washington Square written by Henry James, takes place in Manhattan during the 1840s.
"Washington Square" began for James with an anecdote told by the actress Fanny Kemble
(Simpson). The main characters include Dr. Sloper who is a renown physician, his two sisters; Mrs.
Penniman who is melodramatic and Mrs. Almond who is sympathetic, a coxcomb known as Morris
Townsend, and Catherine who is the daughter of Dr. Sloper. These characters affect Catherine's
personality and have a great impact on her life which helps her develop a backbone. In the
beginning, Catherine is known as the shy and plain girl, and a disappointment to her father.
However, towards the end of the book the readers are able to see how Catherine has grown into a
strong–willed and independent woman. This is due to how she has been treated throughout many
relationships with others. Three qualities that Catherine possess are being shy, inexperienced, and
independent. One characteristic of Catherine is that she is very shy. For example, when Morris
Townsend approaches her; "She answered nothing; she only listened and looked at him; and he, as if
he expected no particular reply, went on to say many other things in the same comfortable and
natural manner" (James). Catherine is completely mute and tongue–tied. The readers can also infer
that Catherine is a very introverted person. Although Catherine can be shy, she is the protagonist in
the novel. Mona Simpson states that James's narrator approaches

Fear Of Power Research Paper
A Fear of Power "I'm like everybody is sitting in the park, like they are watching to see if I'm doing
my job, if am actually working.... As far as I'm concerned you guys [my group and I] are spies
too..." The aforementioned comments are from Dawn, a white female in her third month of a six–
month employment program, a "green shirt" wearing park worker. Our group met Dawn while she
was sweeping along the outer western park sidewalk along with her more timid coworkers. Why
does Dawn think that a group of college students are spies? The "green shirt" park workers are
employees of New York City. Their duty is to clean and maintain the park and its facilities (NYC
Parks). However, many parkgoers fear the workers of Washington Square Park. Confused? ... Show

Prior to observing the workers and parkgoers and before my interview with Dawn, I was fairly
certain that I was going to see the workers, enforcing strict rules and discriminating against various
individuals. My hypothesis was blatantly wrong. The park workers' duties varied tremendously
based on their level and status. Dawn for example is towards the bottom of the workers' totem pole.
She is a "green shirt" worker. As I previously explained, her primary responsibilities are to clean and
maintain the park. However, her supervisors, the "button–down" shirts have more power. They are
there to supervise Dawn and her contemporaries, but also they represent an authority within the
park. However, the ladder of power continues to expand. The park rangers, who are dressed in a
complete uniform and equipped with a badge, have complete power. They supervise all official park
events and a park goer does not want to be on the receiving end of a lecture form a park ranger, nor
do the fellow employees. However, as always in the system of power, the New York City police are
still at the top of the power structure. They can come and go whenever they choose, and when they
are in the park, the illicit activities seem minimized or at least

Why Was George Washington Important
It was so great to see you in Carrollton last month. I have thought a lot about your question
concerning George Washington and decided to do a little research. Maybe this will help shed some
light on the importance of George Washington to Americans. By the way, it helped me learn a little
too.
During the birth of the American Revolution in 1767, George Washington first took political and
military roles to oppose the acts of the British Parliament. The British were imposing taxes and laws
upon the thirteen colonies. Therefore, rebels in the thirteen American colonies began rejection of
monarchy by boycotting; and later used war to overthrow the British while eventually founding the
United States of America.

bridge is a main thoroughfare for commerce and trade today.
If you want to enter the political arena, then George Washington University is a great place to begin.

Descriptive Essay About South Boston
10. South Boston
Known as one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, South Boston is placed on a peninsula that
extends into the Boston Harbor. It is linked to the rest of the city through a narrow strip of land.
Over the years, this strip of land has been gradually widened through landfill.
For over a century, South Boston has been one of the most populated neighborhoods in the city. In
the mid–1800s, it was the third most populous section of Boston. Over the year, new residential
subdivisions have developed in the neighborhood. Each new subdivision has a unique character and
architectural style. Telegraph Hill and Dorchester Heights were both created in the middle of the
19th century to house the city's growing population base.
Originally annexed by Boston in 1804, this neighborhood really started to thrive in the mid–19th
century when the Old Colony Railroad made reaching downtown Boston easy. Before long, it was a
center of industry with shipyards, iron foundries and machine shops popping up everywhere. Today,
industrial buildings can still be found on the northern side of the peninsula.
Modern South Boston has many long–time residents as well as young professionals. With its easy
access to downtown, this area is popular among commuters. It boasts of a thriving nightlife scene
and open spaces. Miles of waterfront parks and beaches can be found at areas like L Street Beach,
Carson Beach, the Strandway and Pleasure Bay.

Short Essay On Robert Moses
Immediately after the Second World War, Robert Moses' power increased exponentially. He then,
got a control over city's housing authority. Huge amount of money was spent by the federal
government on the public housing and low income housing. This money was spent in New York at
the command of Robert Moses. Up to that point Moses had been building mostly parks and bridges,
now, he was going to build inside the city. No one could have predicted the magnitude of explosion
that would overtake New York. Moses demanded to be the construction co–ordinater. The
construction co–ordinater has to represent the city in all its dealing with federal government. And
therefore, he got a control over public housing and federal money. In the end of the year 1948, ...

After the war, every one realized the need of good arterial routes through the cities. Soon after that,
Moses planned to ram six expressways right across the heart of New York. Amongst all the federal
projects under his control, none of them had more devastating consequences for the city and its
people. The Cross Bronx expressway of 225 foot wide concrete and 7 miles long destructed the city
in such a way that New Yorkers would never forget. This expressway crossed around 12 to 15
different neighbourhoods and was built in a straight line without thinking that who are the people
living in these neighbourhoods. People here worked, capped up their properties, and did business
where they lived. It was culturally and materially self–sufficient world. People were forced to
evacuate their homes within ninety days. One after another, Robert Moses rammed one expressway
after another upending the lives of more than a quarter of a million people. In 1962 Jane Jacobs, a

Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin In The Sun
Lorraine Hansberry was born in Chicago on May 19th 1930. Growing up in Chicago was an
interesting experience. Her family was rich for a black family at the time. Due to this and the fact
that they were living in the slums at the time, her father bought them a house in the white part of
town. The neighbors attacked them and tried to get the Hansberry's to leave. When they didn't a
court ordered them to. Her father took the case to the supreme court. The case was called Hansberry
v. Lee and the court ruled that they had to move. This was the event that inspired Mrs. Hansberry to
write Raisin In The Sun. Langston Hughes was born on February 1st 1902. He was a poet and an

Symbolism In A Raisin In The Sun
Every man believes of Living the American dream. In a land of opportunity but suffered equality, in
the mid–twentieth century, during a time of segregation. the struggles and hard work minorities
faced made the dream seem too good to be true. In an economy where money becomes more for the
Younger family. In A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, she uses symbolism, imagery, and
the setting to reveal the reality minorities had to overcome to achieve their dreams in the mid–
twentieth century. Symbolism is first sensed in the beginning of the play in ACT 1 SCENE 1, when
Ruth tells Walter "Eat your egg". Walter kept trying to grasp the attention of his wife, and hear him
out about his plan. We can interpret this phrase by it meaning that women hold men back from
achieving their dreams. Though this is not always true, Ruth was persistent because she did not want
to take the risk of her family being affected negatively. Despite the fact that Walter ended up
standing up for himself symbolizes him still being the man in the house. Had he not, and continued
to just eat his eggs we could interpret this as him accepting the adversity he and his family have
been facing. As for Ruth, though she does not support him, she still loves and cares for him, and that
is why she continues to tell him to eat his eggs. Another form of symbolism is when Walter and
Beneatha's altercation, when Mama notices a plant in her house is drying out. "My children and they

Washington Square Park Research Paper
As the triumphant arc of George Washington stands proudly in the center of the park it is surrounded
by a history of death. One of the surrounding buildings now housing New York University students
was once the stage of a tragic fire, the fountain in which the children are playing in lays over mass
graves and the large proud elm tree at the northeast corner of the park was once the final destination
of those condemned to die. This history is one of sadness but the city of New York and the park
itself have been able to overcome this history and become the laugh filled recreation area it is today.
During the Revolutionary War the area was used to execute those accused of treason. A large
looming elm tree that still stands in the northwest corner of the park has been reported to have been
the site of hundreds of public executions during this time period. After the United States won its
independence from Britain the area which would become Washington Square Park was taken from
the English and Dutch land owners residing in the area. The area was then transformed into a Potters

pathways and plant grass in the new park (Moke 2012). After this transformation the once burial

the area and the wealthy moved into the area. However creating a park would not stop the horrible
history that plagued the area. On March 25th 1911 a fire broke out in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory
located directly next to Washington Square Park. In eighteen minutes one hundred and forty six
people, mostly young immigrant women who worked in the factory, were dead (Cornell University).

with my Aunt Lucy in the Bronx. I can use Gleason's Gym for some working out. My manager says
he got some sparring partners with more or less your style." Tony scratched his nose pensively.
"Yeah, it would be better for our heads." He held out his hand, palm upward. "Deal?" "Deal." Felix
lightly slapped open skin. "Ready for some more running?" Tony asked lamely. "Naw, bro. Let's cut
it here. You go on. I kinda like to get things together in my head." "You ain't worried, are you?"
Tony asked. "No way, man." Felix laughed out loud. "I got too much smarts for that. I just think it's
cooler if we split right here. After the fight, we can get it together again like nothing ever happened."

More Open Space By Jane Jacobs Summary
Jane Jacobs begins with an in–depth explanation about neighborhood parks or park–like open spaces
in her chapter, "The uses of neighborhood parks". Essentially, city parks are based on their usage.
Jacobs explains that parks are volatile places and tend to run on extremes of popularity and
unpopularity. The self–evident virtue, More Open Space, is talked about throughout the chapter.
Most city planners think it is good, but in reality, it is only good if it exists in a combination of its
uses. If a park is used all day, not on weekends or breaks, the park itself becomes a character of an
enjoyable neighborhood. Jacobs explains that it is important to understand general principles about
park behavior that is applied to all parks. She uses examples of the "Penn's four squares" to prove

There are so many city parks that have been ruined by vandalism and other negative affects on them.
Coming from personal experience of being a full–time nanny in the summer, I acknowledge her
explanation of good city parks. I would drive an extra 15 minutes to take the children to a different
park daily even though they had one, minutes away from their home. It would take them away from
watching TV and enjoying the simplicity of nature and socialize. What attracts me to successful
parks are fountains, flowers, shade, safety, views and most important, the location of them. There
are so many beautiful parks in my area but a few were ruined based on the simple fact of "bums"
taking them over. In Poland, where I go almost every summer to visit my family, more parks filled
with bums than there are for enjoyment. The homeless saw these parks as a home and benches as
beds. Jacobs clarifies that the worst problem parks are located precisely where people do not pass by

Analysis Of Hear Them Roar : The Fight For Women's Rights
On Saturday, October 28, I viewed Hear them Roar: The Fight for Women's Rights, a production by
NYU Steinhardt's Educational Theatre program. Directed by Nan Smithner, clinical associate
professor of educational theatre at New York University, the play not only focuses on the struggle of
white American women to achieve equal rights, but also on immigrant women and women of color.
We are also shown the point of view from the anti–suffragists, and it was quite unnerving to learn
that many anti–suffragists were women themselves. The production also highlighted the men who
were instrumental in helping woman achieve the right to vote. I enjoyed every aspect of this
production as it opened my eyes to a new way of using theatre as an art form. While the diverse
ensemble of actors and other artists, like the costumer and set designer, deserve credit for this
wonderful show, I especially enjoyed the director's work in making Hear them Roar: The Fight for
Women's Rights an eye opening, revolutionary play. Directors are in charge of all artistic aspects of
a production, and there are several ways, of course, to carry out this task. The director can be a
faithful interpreter, a translator, a re–shaper, or an originator. After attending this production, it
appears that Ms. Smithner is the originator or perhaps allowed the actors to write the script because
this does not appear to be a traditionally written script. For the most part, the dialogue did not seem
rehearsed and many of the

Washington Square Park Essay
I stand under the Washington Square Park arch onlooking the fountain as I watch my mother lean

where the sun was out but you still needed a light jacket to keep warm. Cars zoomed by. Groups of

imagined how the park would look in the fall with the leaves each a different shade of red and

underneath my feet. It has been 5 years since my first visit but the treasures of NYU remain
timeless.

New York City: History and Landmarks
New York City
The first native New Yorkers were the Lenape, an Algonquin people who hunted, fished and farmed
in the area between the Delaware and Hudson rivers. Europeans began to explore the region at the
beginning of the 16th century––among the first was Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian who sailed
up and down the Atlantic coast in search of a route to Asia––but none settled there until 1624. That
year, the Dutch West India Company sent some 30 families to live and work in a tiny settlement on
"Nutten Island" (today's Governors Island) that they called New Amsterdam. In 1626, the
settlement's governor general, Peter Minuit, purchased the much larger Manhattan Island from the
natives for 60 guilders in trade goods such as tools, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The 20th century was an era of great struggle for American cities, and New York was no exception.
The construction of interstate highways and suburbs after World War II encouraged affluent people
to leave the city, which combined with deindustrialization and other economic changes to lower the
tax base and diminish public services. This, in turn, led to more out–migration and "white flight."
However, the Hart–Cellar Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 made it possible for immigrants
from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America to come to the United States. Many of these
newcomers settled in New York City, revitalizing many neighborhoods.
New York City in the New Millennium
On September 11, 2001, New York City suffered the deadliest terrorist attack in the history of the
United States when a group of terrorists crashed two hijacked jets into the city's tallest buildings: the
twin towers of the World Trade Center. The buildings were destroyed and nearly 3,000 people were
killed. In the wake of the disaster, the city remained a major financial capital and tourist magnet,
with over 40 million tourists visiting the city each year.

The Evolution of Raleigh and the African American Community: Part 1
There is no doubt Raleigh is full of history since its incorporation in 1792. But how did land in
Raleigh become places for African Americans. One would say after the Civil War former slaves
were given the opportunity to own land as it was subdivided and sold to freed slaves. One of the first
communities to be established for freed slaves was Oberlin Village. Oberlin Village was established
by former slave James E. Harris, who named it after his alma mater Oberlin College. This 149 acres
of land once owned by Duncan Cameron consisted of farmland that was developed by African
Americans to contain structures of churches, school, businesses and homes.

Greatest Moment Of My Life
When I was accepted into New York University it was one of the greatest moments of my life.
However, growing up, I had been told by my grade school teachers that I wasn't sufficiently brilliant
and wouldn't amount to much. I believe that's part of the reason why I endured what I did during my
attendance at New York University because I felt as if I had a point to prove. The point was that
nothing would prevent me from earning my degree and that I'd be somebody one day. Amid late
spring, I worked at ROSS Stores and set aside $800 to bear the cost of a flat in New York City for
the fall of 2015. Hoping to move into my dream apartment that I discovered by the means of
Craigslist I wound up being defrauded out of my funds. I instantly started searching for other
housing alternatives and I just happened to come across an article about a former student
scandalously known as the "Bobst Boy". He earned the nickname after becoming homeless and
sleeping in Elmer Holmes Bobst Library for a semester during his senior year. Our library's
basement had two lower levels that stayed open 24/7 for studying and overnight projects. Now out
of both money and hope I took a page from his book, refusing to check into a city shelter I figured
this was the most convenient, temporary, and safe option for me. I walked through Washington
Square Park with my luggage and began to hand out clothes to the homeless women in the park and
dumped anything else I felt I didn't need. At that point, I crossed the

Some fun facts is that there is only one national natural landmark and that is the point of arches.
There is over 3,000 miles of rivers and streams, and that is a lot for a park especially for
Washington. There is 73 miles of wilderness coast. Wow! 60 named glaciers(not counting the ones
that aren't named). Our legs started to hurt on the second day because there's over 64 trailheads and
we only did about 20 of them. I wish i was a Junior Ranger because in 2005 there was about 8,400
rangers. I guess that's why the park is popular. The park must be huge because there was about 457
buildings. And i was lucky to get one because there was a lot of people. I should've brought my fitbit
because there's 611 miles of trail. I would've of gotten all my steps in by the time I was done that
day. What I didn't think would happen is that there would be 2,002 law enforcements reports in 2005
which was a surprise to me. I was kind of scared because I didn't know what would happen. Also in
2005 there was 31 search and rescue missions. Everything happened in 2005 from the rangers and
law enforcement reports to the search and rescue missions. Now that I have learned about all five
parks I see that not all have a good

The Sustainability Plan And Its Involvement For The Three...
Sustainability is not just an individual's responsibility but also the community and the government
officials' of where the individual lives. As individuals continue to move from rural to urban areas, it
creates urbanization cities which present issues of environmental protection, economic viability,
social and health equity. Cities cannot be sustainable in the long term if their economic growth
harms the environment that they depend upon for clean air, fresh water, food supplies, and other
ecosystem services. In this paper, I will introduce and analyze Washington D.C.'s sustainability plan
and its involvement to the three pillars of sustainability. I choose Washington D.C. because it is an
important center of politics, culture, and economics in the United States. In addition, I choose
Washington D.C because I live very close to the city. I live in College Park which is about 30
minutes ride from the city. I have live at College Park for a year and have often visited the cities. I
am interested in working in the city after graduation so I want to understand how the city addresses
and responds to threats of the urbanization trend.
Geographically, the city of Washington was built on a low, wide peninsula of land bounded by the
Potomac River and its tributary, the Anacostia, that serves as an important commercial port. The
main District is only 68 square miles but Washington metropolitan area covers nearly 4,000 square

“A Raisin in the Sun”
Lorraine Hansberry used symbolism in her successful drama, "A Raisin in the Sun" to portray
emotions felt in the lives of her characters and possible her own. Hansberry set her piece in
Chicago's South Side, probably the early 1950's. During this period in history, many African–
Americans, like the Youngers, struggled to overcome the well–known prejudices that were far too
familiar. The main scene, in this touching realist drama, is the home of the Youngers, an
overcrowded run–down apartment. Hansberry used this private scenery to enhance the many
feelings the Youngers, and other African–Americans, fought to conquer and to embrace in the name
of happiness.

Hansberry, not only, played on the condition of the apartment; she used the size as well. The
condition alone portrayed the despair and oppression the Youngers felt, but Hansberry wanted to
make their struggle to suppress depression undeniable. She did this by placing the family of five,
soon to be six, in a two–bedroom apartment with no bathroom. This small, cramped apartment also
symbolized the pressures from society to divvy up the limited resources partitioned for African–
Americans. By setting the scene this way, Hansberry also was able to set the mood. The feeling of
tension and need for the characters to fight for their fair share is apparent in the opening act, as Ruth
rushes Travis into the bathroom before the neighbors. These feelings serve as a foundation for the
problems in act three between brother and sister, Ruth's motive to have an abortion, and represent an
explanation to the need so many African–Americans felt to compete against each other. Hansberry
characterized the lack of resources, a common theme here, not only in the lack of space, but also in
the lack of food, money, and sunlight. As conflict intensified in the small space, Mama realized that
her be–loved family was falling apart and only the reality of owning a home could bring unity. To
overcome the mountains of negative emotions the Youngers turn to their beckons of hope. The three
main symbolic items Hansberry used were Mama's

Ecological and Environmental Issues at Washington DC
Washington, D.C. Ecological Issues Introduction: Ecologies and environments in the nation's
capitol, Washington, D.C. Washington, D.C. is known for the White House, for Capitol Hill, all the
monuments to great Americans and to historic moments. But there is a great deal more in the
nation's capitol than politics and monuments. According to the Website HYPERLINK
"http://www.washingtoncity.in" www.washingtoncity.in, the city's land covers more than "...sixty–
one square miles" and the rivers and lakes in the city cover over "six square miles." Washington
D.C. is bounded on the west by the State of Virginia and the State of Maryland surrounds the city on
the northwest, northeast and southeast. Three main rivers flow through Washington D.C., the
Potomac River, the Anacostia River, and Rock Creek. Actually the major river running through the
city is the Potomac, and the Rock Creek and Anacostia River are tributaries of the Potomac
(meaning, they contribute water to the Potomac). Seventy percent of the land in Washington, D.C.
"...is controlled by the National Park Service" and there are 250,000 acres of parkland in the
metropolitan area of Washington D.C. ( HYPERLINK "http://www.Washington.org"

Life Well-Lived Experience

  • 1. Life Well-Lived Experience Life Well–Lived Experience Andini Effendi A dear friend couldn't help to gasp when I uttered my plan on taking two years off from career to pursue master degree abroad. I remember her words vividly, "So you will leave your spot to someone younger, brighter and most probably hotter just like that?" I also remember what was my answer; it was simply "yes." Don't get me wrong I absolutely love my job. So much love as if I am married to my work. I am the living example of someone whose her passion becomes a profession. For me working it's like playing. There were never a dull moment. But then I came to a point where I desired something more that would make me feel whole. It was education. I craved so much to broaden my knowledge, ... In addition to Native Americans who were already living on the continent, the population of the United States was built on immigration from other countries. Since so many different kinds of people immigrated to the United States, America is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. Practically every region of the world has influenced American culture in some way. The region that has influenced the United States the most is the English, who colonized America in the early 1600s. America is sometimes called the "melting pot". This term is used as a metaphor describing a fusion of nationalities, cultures and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An example of what they have done for us is the building of the capital in Washington, D.C. Washington owes much of its sole design to the Frenchman, Pierre Charles L'Enfant. When Washington, D.C. was established, President Washington chose an area of land measuring one hundred square miles where the Anacostia River met the Potomac just north of Mount Vernon, Georgetown. The new nation of America needed a federal center with space dedicated to government buildings. The President asked Pierre L'Enfant, an established architect, to survey the area and recommend locations for buildings and streets. L'Enfant arrived in Georgetown on a rainy night in March 1791 and immediately got to work. L'Enfant designed the city from scratch, he imagined and put to life a grand capital of wide avenues, public squares and additional buildings in what was then plantations, marshes, forests, and hills. The Frenchman placed Congress on a high point with a commanding view of the Potomac River. He made the Capitol Hill the center of the city. L' Enfant designed wide boulevards for easy transportation across town and offered views of important buildings and common squares from great distances. Public squares and park were also evenly ... The Arch of Titus was a Roman Triumphal art that was constructed by Domitian in 81 C.E. in Via Sacra, Rome in the foot of the Palatine hill. The Arch of Titus was constructed to commemorate the victories of Titus and Vespasian in the Jewish war. The Jewish war began because Judea was ruled by the Romans and they had no respect towards the Jewish religious traditions. After Judea being ruled by Rome and the struggle over the blending of Greek and Jewish traditions it exploded into war. The war was led by Titus, who conquered Jerusalem and destroyed Jerusalem temple. It was also a political and religious statement that expresses the divinity of Titus. The Arch was made out of Pentelic marble. Romans would relied on the marble Greeks used, and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Arch of Titus was 51' high and is the smallest Arch in Rome. The arch has sculpture scenes on the sides of the relief panels. Relief panels are very significant in the history and development of Roman art because it was the first time sculptures used the illusion of space. This is shown in various ways; the figures are presented in three–quarter view, background figures are so rendered that they fade slowly into the distance, the central relief are carved in a higher relief, and the whole panel is curved inwards. The marble reliefs are set on the either side of the inner arch and it measures 2.04 m high by 3.85 long. The inscription that is located in the east side of arch were inlaid with gilded bronze and it says: The Senate and People of Rome, to Divus Titus, son of Divus Vespasian, Vespasian Augustus. • 13. Film Review : The Heiress And Henry James's Washington Square Henry James's novel, Washington Square, was the inspiration for both movies: The Heiress by William Wyler, and Washington Square by Agnieszka Holland. Although these films did not follow James's novel precisely, they still capture the audience and show self–development for main character Catherine. Laurence Raw and Karen Michele Chandler each wrote articles regarding the film adaptations in comparison to Washington Square. In Raw's article "Reconstructing Henry James: The Heiress", he analyzes scenes from The Heiress alongside a Broadway adaptation written by Augustus Goetz. Furthermore, Raw examines problems during filming and the stature of James throughout his career. Meanwhile, in Chandler's essay "Her Ancient Faculty of Silence", she discusses The Heiress and Holland's Washington Square, addressing aspects distinct from the novel. Additionally, Chandler describes how each film overcomes female subjectivity while examining silence and cultural negation that develop Catherine's empowerment. Raw begins his article stating other's opinions on replicating James's novel into a film. Moreover, he outlines the challenges of the adapting process and suggests "filmmakers need a radical interpretation and a structure of their own to retain direction, shape, or dynamics" (243). Although James was initially unappreciative of his Washington square, many academics admired his profound writing abilities. However, critics had conflicting views, visualizing James as a failed screenplay ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. The Characteristics Of Catherine InWashington Square, By... The novel, Washington Square written by Henry James, takes place in Manhattan during the 1840s. "Washington Square" began for James with an anecdote told by the actress Fanny Kemble (Simpson). The main characters include Dr. Sloper who is a renown physician, his two sisters; Mrs. Penniman who is melodramatic and Mrs. Almond who is sympathetic, a coxcomb known as Morris Townsend, and Catherine who is the daughter of Dr. Sloper. These characters affect Catherine's personality and have a great impact on her life which helps her develop a backbone. In the beginning, Catherine is known as the shy and plain girl, and a disappointment to her father. However, towards the end of the book the readers are able to see how Catherine has grown into a strong–willed and independent woman. This is due to how she has been treated throughout many relationships with others. Three qualities that Catherine possess are being shy, inexperienced, and independent. One characteristic of Catherine is that she is very shy. For example, when Morris Townsend approaches her; "She answered nothing; she only listened and looked at him; and he, as if he expected no particular reply, went on to say many other things in the same comfortable and natural manner" (James). Catherine is completely mute and tongue–tied. The readers can also infer that Catherine is a very introverted person. Although Catherine can be shy, she is the protagonist in the novel. As far as I'm concerned you guys [my group and I] are spies too..." The aforementioned comments are from Dawn, a white female in her third month of a six– month employment program, a "green shirt" wearing park worker. Our group met Dawn while she was sweeping along the outer western park sidewalk along with her more timid coworkers. Why does Dawn think that a group of college students are spies? The "green shirt" park workers are employees of New York City. Their duty is to clean and maintain the park and its facilities (NYC Parks). However, many parkgoers fear the workers of Washington Square Park. Confused? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Prior to observing the workers and parkgoers and before my interview with Dawn, I was fairly certain that I was going to see the workers, enforcing strict rules and discriminating against various individuals. My hypothesis was blatantly wrong. The park workers' duties varied tremendously based on their level and status. Dawn for example is towards the bottom of the workers' totem pole. She is a "green shirt" worker. As I previously explained, her primary responsibilities are to clean and maintain the park. However, her supervisors, the "button–down" shirts have more power. They are there to supervise Dawn and her contemporaries, but also they represent an authority within the park. However, the ladder of power continues to expand. The park rangers, who are dressed in a complete uniform and equipped with a badge, have complete power. They supervise all official park events and a park goer does not want to be on the receiving end of a lecture form a park ranger, nor do the fellow employees. However, as always in the system of power, the New York City police are still at the top of the power structure. • 21. Why Was George Washington Important It was so great to see you in Carrollton last month. I have thought a lot about your question concerning George Washington and decided to do a little research. Maybe this will help shed some light on the importance of George Washington to Americans. By the way, it helped me learn a little too. During the birth of the American Revolution in 1767, George Washington first took political and military roles to oppose the acts of the British Parliament. The British were imposing taxes and laws upon the thirteen colonies. Therefore, rebels in the thirteen American colonies began rejection of monarchy by boycotting; and later used war to overthrow the British while eventually founding the United States of America. George Washington probably did ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The bridge that connects New York and New Jersey is one of the landmarks named for George Washington. Over 102 million people travel this double decker 14 lane bridge yearly. The "GW" bridge is a main thoroughfare for commerce and trade today. If you want to enter the political arena, then George Washington University is a great place to begin. This namesake is rated as one of the top universities in the United States and is known to produce many policy makers and political activists. It is located in the Washington D.C. area and would make a perfect place for you to attend college since you are so interested in the history of the United States. Another attraction named for George Washington is the tall slender white monument in Washington D.C. It is made from stones from all of the 50 states and overlaid with marble. • 25. Descriptive Essay About South Boston 10. South Boston Known as one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, South Boston is placed on a peninsula that extends into the Boston Harbor. It is linked to the rest of the city through a narrow strip of land. Over the years, this strip of land has been gradually widened through landfill. For over a century, South Boston has been one of the most populated neighborhoods in the city. In the mid–1800s, it was the third most populous section of Boston. Over the year, new residential subdivisions have developed in the neighborhood. Each new subdivision has a unique character and architectural style. Telegraph Hill and Dorchester Heights were both created in the middle of the 19th century to house the city's growing population base. Originally annexed by Boston in 1804, this neighborhood really started to thrive in the mid–19th century when the Old Colony Railroad made reaching downtown Boston easy. Before long, it was a center of industry with shipyards, iron foundries and machine shops popping up everywhere. Today, industrial buildings can still be found on the northern side of the peninsula. Modern South Boston has many long–time residents as well as young professionals. With its easy access to downtown, this area is popular among commuters. It boasts of a thriving nightlife scene and open spaces. Miles of waterfront parks and beaches can be found at areas like L Street Beach, Carson Beach, the Strandway and Pleasure Bay. Huge amount of money was spent by the federal government on the public housing and low income housing. This money was spent in New York at the command of Robert Moses. Up to that point Moses had been building mostly parks and bridges, now, he was going to build inside the city. No one could have predicted the magnitude of explosion that would overtake New York. After the war, every one realized the need of good arterial routes through the cities. Soon after that, Moses planned to ram six expressways right across the heart of New York. Amongst all the federal projects under his control, none of them had more devastating consequences for the city and its people. The Cross Bronx expressway of 225 foot wide concrete and 7 miles long destructed the city in such a way that New Yorkers would never forget. This expressway crossed around 12 to 15 different neighbourhoods and was built in a straight line without thinking that who are the people living in these neighbourhoods. People here worked, capped up their properties, and did business where they lived. It was culturally and materially self–sufficient world. People were forced to evacuate their homes within ninety days. One after another, Robert Moses rammed one expressway after another upending the lives of more than a quarter of a million people. In 1962 Jane Jacobs, a resident of the town became the chairman of the Joint Committee to Stop the Lower Manhattan Expressway, in reaction to Moses' plans to build a highway through Manhattan's Washington Square Park and West Village. • 33. Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin In The Sun Lorraine Hansberry was born in Chicago on May 19th 1930. Growing up in Chicago was an interesting experience. Her family was rich for a black family at the time. Due to this and the fact that they were living in the slums at the time, her father bought them a house in the white part of town. The neighbors attacked them and tried to get the Hansberry's to leave. When they didn't a court ordered them to. Her father took the case to the supreme court. The case was called Hansberry v. Lee and the court ruled that they had to move. This was the event that inspired Mrs. Hansberry to write Raisin In The Sun. Langston Hughes was born on February 1st 1902. He was a poet and an influential part of the Harlem Renaissance. Langston Hughes and Lorraine Hansberry met in Harlem during the mid 50s. They became very good friends. • 35. Symbolism In A Raisin In The Sun Every man believes of Living the American dream. In a land of opportunity but suffered equality, in the mid–twentieth century, during a time of segregation. the struggles and hard work minorities faced made the dream seem too good to be true. In an economy where money becomes more for the Younger family. In A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, she uses symbolism, imagery, and the setting to reveal the reality minorities had to overcome to achieve their dreams in the mid– twentieth century. Symbolism is first sensed in the beginning of the play in ACT 1 SCENE 1, when Ruth tells Walter "Eat your egg". Walter kept trying to grasp the attention of his wife, and hear him out about his plan. We can interpret this phrase by it meaning that women hold men back from achieving their dreams. Though this is not always true, Ruth was persistent because she did not want to take the risk of her family being affected negatively. Despite the fact that Walter ended up standing up for himself symbolizes him still being the man in the house. Had he not, and continued to just eat his eggs we could interpret this as him accepting the adversity he and his family have been facing. As for Ruth, though she does not support him, she still loves and cares for him, and that is why she continues to tell him to eat his eggs. Another form of symbolism is when Walter and Beneatha's altercation, when Mama notices a plant in her house is drying out. "My children and they tempers. Lord, if this little ... One of the surrounding buildings now housing New York University students was once the stage of a tragic fire, the fountain in which the children are playing in lays over mass graves and the large proud elm tree at the northeast corner of the park was once the final destination of those condemned to die. This history is one of sadness but the city of New York and the park itself have been able to overcome this history and become the laugh filled recreation area it is today. Essentially, city parks are based on their usage. Jacobs explains that parks are volatile places and tend to run on extremes of popularity and unpopularity. The self–evident virtue, More Open Space, is talked about throughout the chapter. Most city planners think it is good, but in reality, it is only good if it exists in a combination of its uses. If a park is used all day, not on weekends or breaks, the park itself becomes a character of an enjoyable neighborhood. Jacobs explains that it is important to understand general principles about park behavior that is applied to all parks. She uses examples of the "Penn's four squares" to prove her ... Analysis Of Hear Them Roar : The Fight For Women's Rights On Saturday, October 28, I viewed Hear them Roar: The Fight for Women's Rights, a production by NYU Steinhardt's Educational Theatre program. Directed by Nan Smithner, clinical associate professor of educational theatre at New York University, the play not only focuses on the struggle of white American women to achieve equal rights, but also on immigrant women and women of color. We are also shown the point of view from the anti–suffragists, and it was quite unnerving to learn that many anti–suffragists were women themselves. The production also highlighted the men who were instrumental in helping woman achieve the right to vote. I enjoyed every aspect of this production as it opened my eyes to a new way of using theatre as an art form. While the diverse ensemble of actors and other artists, like the costumer and set designer, deserve credit for this wonderful show, I especially enjoyed the director's work in making Hear them Roar: The Fight for Women's Rights an eye opening, revolutionary play. Directors are in charge of all artistic aspects of a production, and there are several ways, of course, to carry out this task. The director can be a faithful interpreter, a translator, a re–shaper, or an originator. After attending this production, it appears that Ms. Smithner is the originator or perhaps allowed the actors to write the script because this does not appear to be a traditionally written script. Europeans began to explore the region at the beginning of the 16th century––among the first was Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian who sailed up and down the Atlantic coast in search of a route to Asia––but none settled there until 1624. That year, the Dutch West India Company sent some 30 families to live and work in a tiny settlement on "Nutten Island" (today's Governors Island) that they called New Amsterdam. However, growing up, I had been told by my grade school teachers that I wasn't sufficiently brilliant and wouldn't amount to much. Sustainability is not just an individual's responsibility but also the community and the government officials' of where the individual lives. As individuals continue to move from rural to urban areas, it creates urbanization cities which present issues of environmental protection, economic viability, social and health equity. • 67. “A Raisin in the Sun” Lorraine Hansberry used symbolism in her successful drama, "A Raisin in the Sun" to portray emotions felt in the lives of her characters and possible her own. Hansberry set her piece in Chicago's South Side, probably the early 1950's. During this period in history, many African– Americans, like the Youngers, struggled to overcome the well–known prejudices that were far too familiar. The main scene, in this touching realist drama, is the home of the Youngers, an overcrowded run–down apartment. Hansberry used this private scenery to enhance the many feelings the Youngers, and other African–Americans, fought to conquer and to embrace in the name of happiness. As with families of any ethnic group, the Youngers ultimate goal was to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hansberry, not only, played on the condition of the apartment; she used the size as well. The condition alone portrayed the despair and oppression the Youngers felt, but Hansberry wanted to make their struggle to suppress depression undeniable. She did this by placing the family of five, soon to be six, in a two–bedroom apartment with no bathroom. This small, cramped apartment also symbolized the pressures from society to divvy up the limited resources partitioned for African– Americans. By setting the scene this way, Hansberry also was able to set the mood. The feeling of tension and need for the characters to fight for their fair share is apparent in the opening act, as Ruth rushes Travis into the bathroom before the neighbors. These feelings serve as a foundation for the problems in act three between brother and sister, Ruth's motive to have an abortion, and represent an explanation to the need so many African–Americans felt to compete against each other. Hansberry characterized the lack of resources, a common theme here, not only in the lack of space, but also in the lack of food, money, and sunlight. As conflict intensified in the small space, Mama realized that her be–loved family was falling apart and only the reality of owning a home could bring unity. To overcome the mountains of negative emotions the Youngers turn to their beckons of hope. The three main symbolic items Hansberry used were Mama's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
