There are a total of 1,150,000 gang members in the United States and 40% of them are under the age
of 18 years old. There has been much research done on gang members, but the theory that stands out
most is Social Identity Theory. When considering that almost half of gang members are under the
age of 18, it is not shocking that Social Identity Theory applies to the lives of these gang members.

When working with the Alvarez family it is important to understand the complex nature of their
situation. The Alvarez family is currently dealing with a difficult situation by way of their son, JC,

death rate due to gangs is bizarrely high. They kill each other for no reason at all. Even if you're not
involved with gangs physically you might be involved financially. Taxpayers might not even know it

member shot someone without insurance and the bill has to be paid some type of way. Gang

As someone living in a community where gang violence is a problem, I am grateful that you are able
to take part in a movement to decrease the amount of gang violence today. According to
NeighborhoodScout.com, gang–related crimes occur an average of seven times a week in my small
community of Delhi. The number may sound small but considering the size of my community where
everyone knows each other this gang violence is affecting us a lot so it needs to stop. These numbers

According to the Criminal Justice of Canada, gangs are defined as "an organized group who plan
and carry out crime for profit, often using violence" (CJC, 2017). Gangs promote their lifestyle to
our youth by glorying their materialistic objects such as expensive cars, jewelry and brand named
clothes. Youth fall for the false illusion and make themselves vulnerable to the hazards of gang
violence. Many troubled youths crave for a sense of belonging and gangs recruit them into their
own. Gangs vary from committing petty crimes to complicated organized crime. Everyone including
communities and children suffer from the losses of the violence. Conversely, there are some
approaches law enforcement make to reduce gang violence.
Why do Youth join gangs? There are many factors that contribute to youth joining gangs. Children
who are raised in a single–parent household, multiple family/foster home transitions, or come from
low income homes have a higher risk of participating in gang activities (Howell, 2010). Growing up
with a disadvantage these children struggle in school due to poor concentration, attention deficit and

in the Los Angeles County area. Malik Spellman is the peacemaker who plays the role of keeping
tempers down amongst rival gangs to prevent violence and death on the tv show called "L.A Gang
Wars The Peacemaker". Mr. Spellman is very involved within the black community and has a
personal relationship with gang members within the Los Angeles gang culture. In the episodes of the
tv show he demonstrates a purposeful mediation tactics by trying to diffuse conflicts among two
gangs who may have beef between one another. Malik Spellman's positive intentions involve
bringing together two gangs for a mediation to negotiate peace treaty terms pertaining to past and or
present conflicts in the gang community. He often times shows empathy towards the situations

Gang Violence And Crime
As developing nations become more independent, it is perceived crime rate would be decreasing as
well. However, gang–related violence has increased as developing countries improve economically
and become an established nation. A plethora of evidence exemplifies that the law enforcement
system corruption has increased to gain influence and power. Thus, the paradigm of gang violence
and crime has become prevalent over the decade of economic growth. To minimize the threat of
organized gang crime among developing nations, governmental agencies must increase law
enforcement and reduce internal corruption.
Weak law enforcement is admittedly a cause of the growth of gang crime amongst developing
crime. Police often participate in barbaric acts such as "fired tear gas at and arrested protesters"
(Torres 1). In addition, Venezuela "[police are] dismissed from a job that pays less than $1.75" (
Kohut). Thus, this propels these law enforcement members to become dominated by gangs because
they have no governmental protection. Police are prone to gang dominance and often carry inside
jobs for them, resulting in an increase in crime. According to report established by the United States
Department of State, "...the government reported 8,813 killings committed by police, which it
classified as 'resistance to authority'. Of those cases, 97 percent were dismissed or remained pending
with no action taken by the Public Ministry" (Kerry). As a result, it is a compliment to the weak
