Why we need mfc(microbial fuel cell)….???
 Renewable and clean forms of
energy are one of society's greatest
needs.
 Microbial fuel cells (MFCs)
represent a completely new method
of renewable energy recovery: the
direct conversion of organic matter
to electricity using bacteria.
 An approximate estimate of global
wastewater production is about
1,500 km3 per day.
 It is a good way to use waste water
converting into electricity.
Microbial fuel cell
 Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) use bacteria to
convert organic waste material into electrical
energy
1. Anode chamber,
2. Cathode chamber,
3. membrane that seperates the anode and
cathode chamber(like potassium nitrate base
membrane or salt type membrane),
4. Electrodes(cu or al),
5. copper wire that joins electrodes,
6. waste water that contain organic materials.
Working of microbial fuel cell
Anode Reaction:- C12H22O11 + 13H2O ---> 12CO2 + 48H+ + 48e-
Cathode Reaction:- 4H+ + O2 + 4e-  2H2O
 It consists of anode and cathode
compartments separated by a cation
(positively charged ion) specific
membrane. In the anode compartment,
fuel is oxidized by microorganisms,
generating CO2, electrons and protons.
Electrons are transferred to the
cathode compartment through an
external electric circuit, while protons
are transferred to the cathode
compartment through the membrane.
 Electrons and protons are consumed in
the cathode compartment, combining
with oxygen to form water.
Anaerobic bacteria…
An anaerobic
organism or anaerobe is
any organism that does not
require oxygen for growth. It may
react negatively or even die if
oxygen is present. An anaerobic
organism may be unicellular
(eg.protozoans, bacteria, Archaes)
or multicellular (eg. metazoa,
deep sea worms).

1.Power generation:-
Bacteria would consume waste material from the water
and produce supplementary power for the plant. The
gains to be made from doing this are that MFCs are a
very clean and efficient method of energy production.
Chemical processing wastewater and designed synthetic
wastewater have been used to produce bioelectricity in
dual- and single-chamber mediatorless MFCs (non-coated
graphite electrodes) apart from wastewater treatment.
Since the current generated from a microbial fuel cell
is directly proportional to the energy content of
wastewater used as the fuel, an MFC can be used to
measure the solute concentration of wastewater .
The strength of wastewater is commonly evaluated as
biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) values.
An MFC-type BOD sensor can be used to measure real-
time BOD values.
There are many advantage of microbial fuel cell.
One of is biogas.
Biogas produces from the anode chamber. We can use
biogas in many application.
Methane gas is produced from the anode chamber
and it can be used as power generation.
4.As alternative of waste treatment:-
Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have
been conceived and intensively studied
as a promising technology to achieve
sustainable wastewater treatment.
 We propose integration of MFCs with
other treatment technologies to form an
MFC-centered treatment scheme based on
thoroughly analyzing the challenges and
opportunities, and discuss future efforts to
be made for realizing sustainable
wastewater treatment.
Hydrogen:
can be used in fuel cells for
generating
electricity.
Methane:
can be combusted directly
orconverted
to ethanol.

  • 2. Why we need mfc(microbial fuel cell)….???  Renewable and clean forms of energy are one of society's greatest needs.  Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) represent a completely new method of renewable energy recovery: the direct conversion of organic matter to electricity using bacteria.  An approximate estimate of global wastewater production is about 1,500 km3 per day.  It is a good way to use waste water converting into electricity.

  • 4. 1. Anode chamber, 2. Cathode chamber, 3. membrane that seperates the anode and cathode chamber(like potassium nitrate base membrane or salt type membrane), 4. Electrodes(cu or al), 5. copper wire that joins electrodes, 6. waste water that contain organic materials.
  • 5. Working of microbial fuel cell Anode Reaction:- C12H22O11 + 13H2O ---> 12CO2 + 48H+ + 48e- Cathode Reaction:- 4H+ + O2 + 4e-  2H2O
  • 6.  It consists of anode and cathode compartments separated by a cation (positively charged ion) specific membrane. In the anode compartment, fuel is oxidized by microorganisms, generating CO2, electrons and protons. Electrons are transferred to the cathode compartment through an external electric circuit, while protons are transferred to the cathode compartment through the membrane.  Electrons and protons are consumed in the cathode compartment, combining with oxygen to form water.
  • 7. Anaerobic bacteria… An anaerobic organism or anaerobe is any organism that does not require oxygen for growth. It may react negatively or even die if oxygen is present. An anaerobic organism may be unicellular (eg.protozoans, bacteria, Archaes) or multicellular (eg. metazoa, deep sea worms).

  • 9. 1.Power generation:- Bacteria would consume waste material from the water and produce supplementary power for the plant. The gains to be made from doing this are that MFCs are a very clean and efficient method of energy production. Chemical processing wastewater and designed synthetic wastewater have been used to produce bioelectricity in dual- and single-chamber mediatorless MFCs (non-coated graphite electrodes) apart from wastewater treatment.
  • 10. Since the current generated from a microbial fuel cell is directly proportional to the energy content of wastewater used as the fuel, an MFC can be used to measure the solute concentration of wastewater . The strength of wastewater is commonly evaluated as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) values. An MFC-type BOD sensor can be used to measure real- time BOD values.
  • 11. There are many advantage of microbial fuel cell. One of is biogas. Biogas produces from the anode chamber. We can use biogas in many application. Methane gas is produced from the anode chamber and it can be used as power generation.
  • 12. 4.As alternative of waste treatment:- Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have been conceived and intensively studied as a promising technology to achieve sustainable wastewater treatment.  We propose integration of MFCs with other treatment technologies to form an MFC-centered treatment scheme based on thoroughly analyzing the challenges and opportunities, and discuss future efforts to be made for realizing sustainable wastewater treatment.
