Paired Reading: basics
Licence purchased from Unitas – the
programme is called TextNow
For 20 EAL students in y7 and y8
throughout the year
Paired up with 10 6th form students
(y12)
5x20 mins of paired reading per week
for 10 weeks
Paired Reading - Aims
Motivating y7 and y8s to read more
and to read for pleasure
Increasing their reading skills
Encouraging their interest in reading
Showing that one can read for
pleasure
Preventing disengagement from
reading, low self-esteem, detachment
from education
Paired Reading - strands

in terms of their reading age
First cohort involves 7 students on
PPM (out of 10)
Includes MPT students
Paired Reading - structure
1. Training for the coaches (6th formers):
online and at the school
2. Reading Assessment of the mentees (by the
programme’s Coordinator)
3. Paired Reading starts – 10 weeks of paired
reading per week
4. Y7/8s access MyChoice!
5. Final review involving the coach, student
and the Coordinator
6. EAL students given certificates + coaches
receive a personal statement + a reference
from the Coordinator

A Unitas website where the EAL
students will be able to “purchase”
books
Each 20 minutes’ session gets the
students a number of credits
Credits = their own books

Year 7 and 8 students
Computer-based programme
improving literacy skills of students

Targets specific literacy/linguistic skills
and makes students practise them
until they’ve mastered them
3x20 minutes in a week for 30
students (at a time)

Based on NGRT + CATs scores (July
2013 for y8s & Sept 2013 for Y7s)
EAL students (MPTs) included
Statemented students
Lexia - organization
First 15 students (y7s) arrive in the first
part of the lesson
The other 15 students (y8s) arrive in the
second part of the lesson
Students are assessed by the software
in their first session, then progress
through 5 levels
Students will receive certificates of
achievements (to be given out to them at
assemblies) as they achieve levels within
the programme
Lexia – examples of reports
Lexia – tracking progress
Progress reports – student’s
progression through each of the
programme’s activities
Usage reports – average weekly use
of the Lexia Reading Recovery
programme by the student
Skills reports – progress in reading
skills over time; data on accuracy, rate
and whether or not the student is
struggling and needs instruction

programme, next ones will be
introduced to it

ensure/remind them to go to their
Lexia sessions (first or last 20
minutes)
Get the students to do more Lexia
work in your tutorials or tutor time
(they can do this on your devices and
from any computer)
Encourage them to get more work
done from home

Paired Reading and Lexia

  • 1. PAIRED READING AND LEXIA Literacy initiatives at Twickenham Academy for y7 and y8 students Kamil Trzebiatowski, 23 October 2013
  • 2. Paired Reading: basics Licence purchased from Unitas – the programme is called TextNow For 20 EAL students in y7 and y8 throughout the year Paired up with 10 6th form students (y12) 5x20 mins of paired reading per week for 10 weeks
  • 3. Paired Reading - Aims Motivating y7 and y8s to read more and to read for pleasure Increasing their reading skills Encouraging their interest in reading Showing that one can read for pleasure Preventing disengagement from reading, low self-esteem, detachment from education
  • 5. Paired Reading – targeting students Only EAL students EAL students below their calendar age in terms of their reading age First cohort involves 7 students on PPM (out of 10) Includes MPT students
  • 6. Paired Reading - structure 1. Training for the coaches (6th formers): online and at the school 2. Reading Assessment of the mentees (by the programme’s Coordinator) 3. Paired Reading starts – 10 weeks of paired reading per week 4. Y7/8s access MyChoice! 5. Final review involving the coach, student and the Coordinator 6. EAL students given certificates + coaches receive a personal statement + a reference from the Coordinator

  • 9. How you can help Remind the students of their sessions, particularly if it emerges they’ve not been attending Get them to read their books in your tutorials (particularly ones off MyChoice!) In your tutorials, ask them about what reading strategies they’ve learned with their mentors

Lexia - basics Year 7 and 8 students Computer-based programme improving literacy skills of students below L4 Targets specific literacy/linguistic skills and makes students practise them until they’ve mastered them 3x20 minutes in a week for 30 students (at a time) Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays
  • 12. Lexia - criteria for inclusion Below Level 4 (APPM) Based on NGRT + CATs scores (July 2013 for y8s & Sept 2013 for Y7s) EAL students (MPTs) included Statemented students
  • 13. Lexia - organization First 15 students (y7s) arrive in the first part of the lesson The other 15 students (y8s) arrive in the second part of the lesson Students are assessed by the software in their first session, then progress through 5 levels Students will receive certificates of achievements (to be given out to them at assemblies) as they achieve levels within the programme

Lexia – tracking progress Progress reports – student’s progression through each of the programme’s activities Usage reports – average weekly use of the Lexia Reading Recovery programme by the student Skills reports – progress in reading skills over time; data on accuracy, rate and whether or not the student is struggling and needs instruction
  • 16. Lexia – more information Once first students finish the programme, next ones will be introduced to it

  • 18. What can you do to help? If the child is in your lessons, ensure/remind them to go to their Lexia sessions (first or last 20 minutes) Get the students to do more Lexia work in your tutorials or tutor time (they can do this on your devices and from any computer) Encourage them to get more work done from home
