Spiritual Baptist Mourning
The Spiritual Baptist religion is a religion that is a combination of elements of the African and
Christian religions in which most of the customs and practiced doctrine are taken from the King
James Version of the Bible. Spiritual Baptists believe their religion was derived from John the
Baptist. This religion is a system of beliefs and practices e.g. baptism, pilgrimages, thanksgiving and
mourning. Some of the items used within this religion include the shepherd rod, cross, tariya, lothar,
water, calabash, flowers, candles and candle sticks, incense and bell. It also involves being filled
with the spirit, shouting, speaking in unknown tongues, ringing of bells, and providing spiritual
assistance to those in need (Peza, 1999).

They are also prayed for, anointed with oil, sealed with chalk and their eyes and ears are bound with
five bands (pieces of sanctified cloth) to prevent distraction. After this service the pilgrims are led to
the inner chamber (mourning room) (Bonas, 2012).
The period of mourning begins with the bound pilgrims being put on the road and placed their backs
"in their graves" the stony floor where they fast, prayer, meditate and journey

The Spiritual Growth of Lily Owens in The Secret Life of...
The Secret Life of Bees delineates an inspirational story in which the community, friendship and
faith guide the human spirit to overcome anything. The story follows Lily Owens, a 14 year old girl
who desperately wants to discover the cause of her mothers death. Her father T. Ray gives her no
answers, which leads their maid, Rosaleen, to act as her guardian. Together, Lily and Rosaleen run
away to Tiburon, South Carolina and find a welcoming community. It is in Tiburon that Lily learns
many life lessons, including many about herself. In her novel The Secret Life of Bees, Sue Monk
Kidd explores a theme of spiritual growth through Lily's search for home as well as a maternal
figure.
The bees symbolize Lily's unspoken guides throughout ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This concept leads Lily to believe that the Virgin Mary is in many ways her mother, even though she
is a mother to thousands of other people as well (Emanuel 41). Lily receives support and love from
August and the community like the bees, though it is a secret to the rest of the world. The bees act as
pathfinders for Lily as she learns more about herself, along with Zach
Sue Monk Kidd utilizes the character Zach to assist Lily in understanding the power of her choices.
Zach reveals the power of choices that each individual can make. Before coming to Tiburon, Lily
assumed that all African–Americans worked as housekeepers and she had certainly never heard of a
black lawyer. She then meets Zach who wants to pursue a career as a lawyer and August who
chooses to work as a beekeeper. Zach wants to break free of social mores and become an attorney
(Harken 57). Zach's imagination as he works toward achieving his dreams inspires Lily to think in a
way that she has never thought of before. In Lily's story she depicts Zach as the lawyer that he has
always dreamed of being. He teaches her that stereotypes do not have to be true as he works to do
something that not many other African Americans had fulfilled before. Lily remembers, "You gotta
imagine what's never been, Zach had said" (Kidd 126). Similarly, Zach helps Lily recognize that she
can be in more than one community. When his friend throws a bottle at a Caucasian man,

Our Spiritual Growth
How do I know that I am growing up spiritually?
First of all, if we want to know whether we are growing up spiritually or not, we must know what
the meaning of growing spiritually is. Spirituality is our human capacity for God which allows us to
recognise God or the movement of God in our lives and, in the light of this recognition and
experience of God, our lived response to God (quoted from SF from the heart pdf). We can define
growing up spiritually as the processes when our human capacity to recognize, experience, and
response to God is increasing and we much more love and value God as our partner of marriage.
The processes are through the steps how we encounter God, what we know of God, and how we
love God.
The first step of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I want to know God perfectly, God with a perfect purpose. And I have the truth revealed in my live
through many experience with God. Every time I know God more or something new, I feel joy and
amazed how awesome and almighty God is, I have my faith grow up. I got the most of knowledge in
my Senior High and University. Then, my knowledge is strengthened within the community of
church. But with more knowledge, we have more responsibility to God which is to do the right
things according what we have already known. Knowing God is like knowing and understanding
your spouse, it is not only for the theologians, but all the follower of Christ. The purpose of theology
is to become more like Jesus Christ. For me, until now, I am still growing in my theology, and I am
looking forward to know and understand God much more, knowing His every plan in my life.
The last step of the spiritual growth is the spirituality itself, how we love God. From the Bible, we
can see Matthew 22:37 that we must love the God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with
your entire mind and we can see John 14:15 that if we love God, we will obey God's
commandments. Loving God means that we love God as the first priority and obey His
commandments. It is also said in the bible John 4:21, whoever loves God, must love his brother
also. God is

Conflicts Are Inevitable But They Initiate Changes And...
Conflicts are inevitable but they initiate changes and opportunities for spiritual growth.
Interpersonal conflicts are not usually thought of as a Bible topic. However, there is an exorbitant
amount on the subject in regards to dealing with other people. There is at least one passage in every
book in the New Testament to believers to live at peace with one another. The largest part is found in
the teachings of Jesus and His apostles. No matter what the conflict may be the Bible 's advice is
spiritually sound and practical for promoting peace and harmony, whomever and whatever the
conflict may be.
We are repeatedly instructed to love one another as seen in John 13:34, "A new command I give
you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." These verses tell us to
love one another and sacrifice one's self. This kind of love should be extended to strangers, for we
are all of the same flesh, and created after the image of God.
One another should live in peace and harmony as stated in Romans 15:5, "May the God who gives
endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ
Jesus had" The ones who are strong should be patient with those who are weaker. Our goal is to not
only please ourselves but to lift them up so to please God. Even Jesus did not put himself first. For it
is written of him that "the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me" (Romans 15:3). So that
the body of Christ can with

Money And Spirituality
Money & Spirituality – Do They Mix? By Anisa Aven Aug 17, 2007 The hoary argument that you
cannot have both – spirituality and abundance – continues to proliferate and entangle the minds and
experience of many seekers. As a culture, we constantly deal with the subconscious remnants caused
by the conflict between money and spirituality. We have allowed toxic ideas to pervade our
unlimited essence like a virus destroying our intrinsic right to wealth and fulfillment. Ideas such as
'money is the root of all evil ', that 'it 's easier to get a camel through the eye of a needle than for a
rich man to get into heaven ', and that 'if you are rich, then you must be either a crook, selfish, or
hardened ' abound in the global consciousness poisoning our natural right to wealth. Additionally,
the infamous subconscious impression amongst many spiritual practitioners and seekers, 'you cannot
be spiritual and a servant of the Divine, if you charge for your talent or knowledge ' continues to be
the self–imposed prison that forces many spiritual workers to thrash about in a sea of lack. These are
just an infinitesimal sampling of the money–and– spirituality–don 't–mix disease. Indeed, if one
becomes consumed with the pursuit of wealth from the external vantage point, their spiritual
unification will be compromised. They may achieve wealth but at the cost of the fulfillment of their
divine destiny and at the expense of personal peace. On the other side, when one pursues

The Importance Of Spiritual Formation And Social Action
Some respondents reported that, while they were very eager to be engaged with LMAW and that
they had a long and deep appreciation for the importance of spiritual formation and social action,
they also felt that within their usual "church life" these two things are so disjointed as to be almost
irreconcilable.
One respondent said that a spiritual practice that fails to reflect action becomes "self perception
grooming" and another said "prayer seems important, but also inadequate, [it is] also one of the only
things I can do to make a difference. So I keep praying about it. Just like I keep clicking on all the
online petitions I see about it – but with little faith it will bring about any major change any time
soon."
These, and other respondents have had a hard time engaging with their church family. Some even
went as far as to say "I was discouraged by my church to participate".
I suspect, however, that the disconnect, and subsequent sense of being a lone voice, unsupported by
the wider church, added to their feelings of aloneness. No doubt the protracted nature of Australia's
mistreatment of asylum seekers and the lack of a general uprising of Christian community has also
contributed to the sense of hopelessness. I do not believe that these feelings are caused exclusively
by their LMAW involvement but their involvement with a group (see below) of like–minded
individuals may well have exacerbated their general aloneness and hopelessness.
Advocating for justice might be

Essay on Elizabeth's Spiritual Growth in "The Crucible"
The Crucible tells of a town's obsession of accusing innocent people of withcraft. One character that
stands out and makes a spiritual growth is Elizabeth Proctor. Elizabeth allows her frustrations of her
depression to overcome her religious beliefs which separates herself from God and her marriage.
She grows spiritually and begins to understand the things going on around her which was the
strength she needed in the beginning. At the start of the play, Elizabeth is heartbroken her husband,
John Proctor, has committed adultery seven months ago with Abagail Williams. Elizabeth's sorrow
leads her to insecurities of her husband's fidelity. When the talk of witchcraft comes up, Elizabeth

With everything going on, Elizabeth allows her distress to overcome her Puritan beliefs. During the
time of the Salem witch trials, many accusations were made. Because Elizabeth knows Abagail
wishes to take her place, she initially becomes frustrated when Rev. Hale reveals Abagail has
accused her of witchery in court. Elizabeth's first instinct is to get her husband to "tell her she's a
whore" and to break the "promise" made that night (1128). Deep down Elizabeth knows her
frustrations are overcoming her religion but she does not yet realize it. When John returns home, he
implies Elizabeth is judging him of his flaws instead of looking for the goodness in him (1124).
John, during this time, was more spiritual and "in–tune" with God more than Elizabeth who only
thought of herself. Her frustrations and insecurities overpowered her consideration of others
feelings. Finally, Elizabeth's spiritual growths are apparent as she begins to understand the tings
going on around her. Because Elizabeth's name has been called in court, she is imprisoned. During
this time, John confesses to the court of everything to save his wife and their family. Elizabeth then
realizes the good in her husband and says she must forgive him in order for him to forgive himself
(1161). She becomes more understanding towards her husband's decision and begins to stand by
him. The strength Elizabeth gains becomes even more apparent as she tells Rev. Hale she is

How Did The Odyssey Cause People To Become Spiritual Growth
What causes people to become spiritual growth? The essay would be about how Odysseus, and
telemachus changes from not believing into belive in the gods help. First Odysseus did not believe
that the gods would help him get back home after all the years he spent in the sea by himself. The
theme is Spiritual Growth and the lesson should be that never judge a person or item from the look

To begin with, Odysseus should not have judge the gods by the look of them or by the way they start
in the book. Odysseus judged the gods because they did not help him get to his family or town on
time after the Trojan War. An example from the book The Odyssey is,¨Odysseus wanted to return
right after the war because he had grown with the wisdom and the judgement that will make him a
better king,´ explains that Odysseus was ready to become a better king but since the gods did not
help him at all, so he was not able to rule his kingdom. The example is stating that since Odysseus

Chapter 10 Of Soul Feast
After reading chapter 10 of Soul Feast, I thought to myself what could be my rule of life? Where do
I need support in my daily walk with Christ? What is it in my life that needs work and could be

these series of questions, it is almost as if God spoke aloud to me. You are very Judge mental it is

Silence. I love this, I find that God can deal with me better in silence. I can hear what God is saying
and what God wants me to do. In my life's journey, I find that practicing silence is what got me
where God wants me to be. In doing this God pours directly in to me, his divine plan. There was a
time when I needed to know what God wants me to do. How do you want me to serve you, because
that is all that I want to do. Spiritual formation teaches you to get closer to God. Learning theses
disciplines taught me to find a way to get closer to him, so that I can operate in my salvation better.
Meaning if you know what Gods plan is for you because your close to him, you can be more
obedient to his principle and precepts. If you study his word and meditate on it daily, you can walk
up right before God. Now understand this doesn't mean you won't fall it means you may fall less.

Developing a Christian Worldview of Spiritual Formation...
Developing a Christian Worldview of Spiritual Formation and Growth
Liberty University
Abstract
This paper looks at how spiritual formation and growth can develop through a person's lifetime. The
goal is to show how modern day human development theories relate to Christlike living. Erikson's
developmental theory and Kohlberg's moral development theory both give a guide to maturity in a
secular worldview. By looking at Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, we can see God's directions to living
a Christlike life in a Christian worldview. It's also important to look at the influence of the Holy
Spirit in developing a person's spiritual life. By relating a worldly view of personal development

stagnation is characterized by achieving meaningful work and possible a family (Berger). Finally,
Berger explains later adulthood, integrity vs. despair focuses on older adults trying to make sense
out of their lives.
Looking at these stages through a Christian worldview, these stages take on a different spiritually
relevant developmental outcome. Tate & Parker (2007) explain trust vs. mistrust now can be
characterized by the "born again" gaining trust in the goodness of God. Autonomy vs. shame and
doubt now focuses on one's ability to build self–control and the willpower to resist evil (Tate &
Parker). The Christian worldview of the play stage can be characterized by an individual's initiative
to begin spiritual disciplines such as prayer, Biblical studying, and listening for God's voice in their
life (Tate & Parker). The industry vs. inferiority stage now focuses on an individual's
dedication to service within the Kingdom (Tate & Parker). In the identity vs. identity confusion
stage, a Christian worldview will focus on an individual's role in the "body of Christ" (Tate &
Parker). Tate and Parker describe the spiritual young adult stage as being characterized by
developing a close and intimate relationship with Christ. Tate and Parker admit the final two
spiritual stages, middle adulthood and later adulthood, are characterized by an individual reaching
"spiritual adulthood" and become spiritual authorities that begin mentoring those individuals

Essay on Negro Spirituals
Negro Spirituals
Spirituals, a religious folk song of American origin, particularly associated with African–American
Protestants of the southern United States. The African–American spiritual, characterized by
syncopation, polyrhythmic structure, and the pentatonic scale of five whole tones, is, above all, a
deeply emotional song. Spirituals are really the most characteristic product of the race genius as yet
in America. But the very elements which make them uniquely expressive of the Negro make them at
the same time deeply representative of the soil that produced them. Spirituals were long thought to
be the only original folk music of the United States, and research into its origin centered mainly on
the nature and extent of its African ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While work songs dealt only with their daily life, spirituals were inspired by the message of Jesus
Christ and his Good News (Gospel) of the Bible, "You can be saved". They are different from
hymns and psalms, because they were a way of sharing the hard condition of being a slave. Many
slaves in town and in plantations tried to run to a "free country", that they called "my home" or
"Sweet Canaan, the Promised Land". This country was on the Northern side of Ohio River, that they
called "Jordan". Some negro spirituals refer to the Underground Railroad, an organization for
helping slaves to run away.
The Spirituals are spiritual. Conscious artistry and popular conception alike should never rob them
of this heritage, untrue to their tradition and to the folk genius to give them another tone. That they
are vulnerable of both crude and refined secularization is no excuse. Even though their own makers
worked them up from the "shout" and the rhythmic elements of the sensuous dance, in
their finished form and basic emotional effect all of these elements were completely sublimated in
the sincere intensities of religious seriousness. To call them Spirituals and treat them otherwise is a
travesty. Emotionally, African slave songs were far from simple. They are not only spread over the
whole length of human moods, with the traditional religious overtone skillfully insinuated in each

African American Culture
n the African American Culture, we are often copied in many different ways. From our hairstyles,
dances, art, lifestyle, clothing , etc. The African–American culture hardly receives credit for what we
do. Celebrities like the Kardashian's for example, they've used our ( the African–American culture)
hairstyles and acted as if it was their creation by giving them new names. So, now everyone outside
of the African–American culture tries it and acts like They've never seen it. We've been wearing
braids and cornrows since forever! Living in the African–American culture we are very
misunderstood. Many take the way that some of us talk or look as aggressive when we really are
nice and very respectable. We were taught to always respect our elders and to also treat the janitor
with the same respect as the CEO. Many also take our slang and automatically thinks that we're
uneducated. We are some very intelligent people actually they we talk shouldn't put us in such a
category. We go to school like everyone else and earn diplomas and degrees. Another thing about
growing up in the African–American culture is that many of us were very religious. They sung old
negro spirituals that until this day are still being used to help us get through tough times. We have
always had faith that's how we've accomplished so much. One thing I can say is that African–
American culture has changed inn many ways with slavery being one of them. Our ancestors were
slaves and fought so that we can be free and we are. African–American culture was more religious
based but those times have changed within some families of our culture with this new era. We were
always taught how to survive even in the worst conditions. If it's one thing that we know how to do
it's how to survive. The African–American culture is treated bad on a daily basis but, we don't let it
stop us. Whenever we fall, we get right back up but stronger and better this time. The Black Power
movement is very important to us. Know that Black Power is real and we will reign. Our leadership
skills are amazing. We were taught to use our creativity to achieve and to never give up. Growing up
in the African–American culture, is pretty exciting I would say. We love soul food Sundays with

Christian Spiritual Formation: How Important Is Spiritual...
How important is spiritual formation?
To comprehend the importance of spiritual formation it is important to define the term. It must be
noted that spiritual formation has different meanings to different people. Thus spiritual formation is
defined as "The dynamics of shaping the human spirit towards maturity and consonance' (The
Dictionary of Christian Spiritual Formation (2003, 107). However, for the purpose of this paper,
spiritual Christian formation is defined as a journey through which we open our hearts to a deeper
connection to God. Thus we are active participants with God, who is forever inviting us into a
relationship with him.
Thus according to Tang, "The components of Christian spiritual formation are knowing and loving
God, knowing and loving ourselves, knowing and loving our neighbours and being mindful of the
presence of God in our daily routine living"(2006).Thus, Spiritual formation is important because
closeness with God brings us real freedom and completeness. "If the son therefore shall make you
free, ye shall be free indeed" (Jn.8:36). Similarly the scriptures tells us "For in him dwelleth all the
fullness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and
power" (Col. 2:9–10).
Furthermore, we are eternal beings who have lost sight of what it means to live eternally. Instead,
we are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Spiritual discipline helps to ensure that the elements of body, soul and spirit are brought together in
a way that aids us in living a life that is pleasing to God. "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a
new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new" (2 Cor.5:17). Hence, it
is important for this transition to take place as Christians so that we are not stuck as spiritual babies
as espoused by the apostle Paul

Corn 's Podcast : Educational And Invigorating
Seane Corn's podcast was twofold: educational and invigorating. Hearing her talk about her journey
to happiness is a true testimonial to naysayers who are having doubts about the positive effects of
yoga. Corn's journey to happiness, as she conveyed, was not an easy one. She had to clamber her
way from an unsettled place as a child growing up in an unstable home. She explained how her
blue–collar working class parents raised her in an environment where religious practices were not
present and how, as a little girl, she thought of herself as "uneducated." She abused drugs and the
tender age of 19 and was diagnosed with "Obsessive Compulsive Disorder." She even suffered from
an anxiety disorder, but these dark episodes of her life eventually led to healing and happiness once
she discovered yoga.
Body Prayer
One of the big ideas in the Corne's narrative that would be a foreign concept to many is "Body
Prayer through yoga." In a nutshell, Corne's says one can use positions of one's body as a way as an
actively pray for others. For example, positioning your hands in an upward position during
meditations could be a form of sending prayers God in the heavens. As I reflect on body prayer, I
feel it would not be wise to guide school age children in body prayer, but for me personally, I can
see how impactful it could be in my life. I am a spiritual person who believes in the power prayer. I
believe that God created all things, mind, body and soul, and these three areas could be used

The Spiritual Discipline Of Practicing The Presence
Introduction
Practicing the presence is 'to develop a continual openness and awareness of Christ's presence living
in oneself'. It involves turning your mind to a Christward direction, constantly being thankful and
doing everything for God. This reflective essay will cover numerous aspects of the spiritual
discipline of practicing the presence, including my original understanding, a significant Christian
historical figure, and denomination comparison. Furthermore, different personal experiences of
practising the presence, specifically individual, group and corporate, as well as a reflection on my
original ideas and closing with ways to encourage practising the presence in ones daily Christian
walk.
Summarise your original understanding of the discipline before the course started
My original understanding about practising the presence was centralised on the idea of seeking God
through prayer and going into that secret place where I can just soak in His presence and allow Him
to renew and restore my soul.
A Significant Christian figure in history who has contributed to this discipline
Brother Lawrence is one of the most significant figures for the spiritual discipline of practising the
presence. He is known for his devotion to God and the ability to bring Him into every aspect of his

scriptures to comprehend how God is speaking through each author, which this course strengthened
those habits for me.
There were many concepts that I learned during this course and there are a few of them that I have
integrated into my study habits each time I read a passage. The first one is authorial intent, and
according to Duvall & Hays (2012), it is when the author stresses the determination of the meaning
of the text (p. 193). This concept consists of the reader researching to find out exactly what the
author is saying and to make sure they remove their own interpretation so that the author's meaning
is only comprehended. When an author speaks, they are attempting to communicate the meaning
using specific words and phrases in the writing, so we must refrain from adding our own
interpretation to the meaning. This compels me to forget what I have learned in the past and read
with a fresh open mind which then helps me renew my knowledge about the scriptures. This goes
hand in hand with finding out the literary meaning the author is conveying.
"Literary meaning refers to the

Prayer Is The Most Essential Of Spiritual Growth
One of the most difficult questions a Christian is often asked is where they are in their spiritual
journey. Celebration of Discipline helps us understand the important aspects that help deepen our
faith. Foster writes that there are three categories of disciplines me must learn: inward, outward, and
corporate. Each category has four subcategories. I believe that prayer, service, and worship are the
most essential in spiritual growth. The first category Foster writes about is inward discipline. Inward
discipline is an act that other believes cannot measure. Inward disciplines are personal to your
relationship with God. The four types of inward disciplines are meditation, prayer, fasting, and
study. Although they are all important, I think that prayer is the most beneficial. The discipline of
prayer brings us into the deepest work of the human spirit (Page 33). Prayer is the key to God
transforming us. As we learn to pray, we learn that our will eventually molds to His will. I have been
hearing a lot of messages lately about the Lord's Prayer. When we say "Thy will be done" we are not
asking God to give us what we want, we are asking God to transform what we want to become what
He wants. Prayer is something that we should center our daily lives around. When we begin to
prayer God meets us where we are, no matter how far along we are in our journey. God uses prayer
to push us deeper into who He is. Sometimes prayer can be frustrating because we do not feel like

"My music is not for everyone. It's only for the strong–willed, the (street) soldiers music. It's not like

Then not just known as slaves but as Africans. Africans came from the land in which the rivers and

My Spiritual And Discipleship Condition Essay
"Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any
wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting" (KJV Ps. 139:23–24). In this verse, David
asks God to help him search his heart so that he can be closer to God. Without God, the process of
self–evaluation is impossible as David states in his psalm. What makes David such a good source
for advice? In the Bible, David is known as "a man after God's own heart" (1 Sam. 13:14). If David
recognized the importance of self–evaluation, then every Christian should continually evaluate
themselves according to God's principles in the Bible. In this paper, I will be examining my spiritual
and discipleship condition in relation to myself, God, and others.
In relation to myself, my biggest weakness would be my fear and anxiety. My biggest fear is change.
In the past, I have had many bad experiences with change. For example, the most traumatic change
in my life was the move from England to South Korea. The leaving behind of friends, culture, and
comfort caused great distress. Another challenge and change was moving from South Korea to
America when my mother became very sick. This change had a very big impact on anxiety as the
fear of losing my mother changed me emotionally. During sixth grade, I went to the middle school
and was bullied. This experience motivated me to become homeschooled. The most recent big
change that I experienced was going to college. Because of my past traumatizing change,

Examples Of Spiritual Growth In The Odyssey
The Odyssey by Homer is an excellent example of spiritual growth in characters. Two of the main
characters, Telemachus, and his father Odysseus, both endure long journeys, but in the end, end up
meeting themselves for the first time. This is truly one of the best gifts a father could give his son.
However, this does not mean that neither experiences hardships along the way. In fact, in the end,
the hardships turn them into more intelligent and courageous fighters.
Telemachus, son of Odysseus and Penelope, and Prince of Ithaca, goes through many emotional
stages, which in the end have a positive effect on him. In the beginning, Telemachus is trudging
along each day, wondering about his father, all the while being surrounded by greedy suitors. These
suitors want nothing more than to bring him down, wed his mother, and become the next King of
Ithaca. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the beginning, he had to leave behind his wife, newborn son, and his hometown, which even then
had useless suitors. Throughout the journey, Odysseus' actions of temerity only bring him down in a
series of ways: first, after blinding the Cyclops Polyphemus, Poseidon's son, Odysseus cannot
suppress his joy. He yells off of the ship to Polyphemus, stating both his name, and his hometown.
Because of this careless act, he causes not only Poseidon to hate him, but it also brings the
Phaecians a bad omen, later causing their ship to turn to stone. Secondly, after visiting Tiresias in the
Underworld, and being told not to eat Helios's cattle, they negligently do so. Odysseus foolishley
lets his men go onto the island, and is clueless while they are killing cattle. This later results in
everyone but him getting killed by a thunderbolt. Although both Telemachus and Odysseus have
made frivolous mistakes, in the end they both come out as stronger

Dreams As A Mode Of Freedom
The theme of dreams as a mode of freedom, an escape, is commonly seen in the literature of African
American writers that can be traced as far back as the Negro Spirituals during the time of slavery.
While the motif of dreams is used far and wide in African American literature, it is in no way a static
matter, but rather a dynamic entity that writers internalize and redefine to express the sentiments of
their time. The meaning of the dream progressed accordingly to racial tensions in the country and
the freedom African Americans were allotted to express themselves politically and creatively.
Starting with Negro Spirituals, hopes and dreams were often connected to a desire of death to escape
slavery. Following emancipation though, the dream motif began to articulate a more hopeful future.
While some of the poems by the Harlem Renaissance writer Langston Hughes harbor a melancholy
attitude echoing that of the Negro Spirituals, Hughes's work can mainly be seen as the turning point
for how the motif of dreams would be portrayed in the works of prominent black authors and
figureheads. Langston Hughes was the beginning of the positive portrayal of the dream. At the time,
Hughes flourished within his community and it wouldn't be until many years later that the full
breadth of his work would be celebrated. He inspired the likes of Lorraine Hansberry and Martin
Luther King Jr. to bring his message to the nation. The dreams expressed by Hansberry and King Jr.

The Importance Of Spiritual Growth
We Christians were spiritually dead from sin until Christ saved us. The great news is that His death
on the cross provided us with spiritual birth, a new life. Moreover, "spiritual birth should lead to
spiritual growth and development" (Koessler 72). Spiritual growth is a growth in knowledge of God,
therefore, entering into a deeper relationship with Him as well as growing in obedience (74). When
it comes to spiritual growth, the role of grace and effort is vital. We often ask ourselves how do they
actually work together to achieve the growth. Koessler, the author of a book True Discipleship
describes their relationship in spiritual growth that "spiritual growth is ultimately a matter of grace",
but it demands a "measure of Spirit–empowered effort to take a place" (79). In order for us
Christians to experience the growth, we have to struggle to know and maintain the proper
relationship of grace and effort where our effort is empowered by grace.
Before talking about further explanation of the relationship between grace and effort, it is very
important to know what each word means. Grace is receiving something that a person does not
deserve, with their own power or worth. And according to Kossler, effort "refers to the
responsibilities that come as a part of the Christian life" (113). Both of them have roles in the
spiritual growth of; hence we should not emphasize only one when we apply them to our life.
For us, God showed His grace by providing salvation through Christ.

Edward T. Welch Spiritual Growth In The Face Of...
Journal of Biblical Counseling: Journal Reflection The article chosen for the Journal Reflection
assignment was, "Spiritual Growth in the Face of Psychiatric Disorders" written by Edward T.
Welch. The author's purpose for this article was to identify the basic theological tools to help those
who identify themselves in psychiatric terms, and then illustrate what sanctification can look like for
three individuals who live with a physically based weakness. Welch hoped to accomplish this
purpose by first acknowledging that a division between psychiatric diagnoses and Scripture exist,
second claiming that in order for a pastor to properly counsel there are first steps of pastoral care to
be taken, third pastors must remember two basic theological ... Show more content on

This allows those who identify with psychiatric diagnosis to recognize that Scripture does speak to
them and they can be loved by the church community and grow in Christ. Welch suggests that in
order for the church to attain this goal the church should be more active when someone has a
physical affliction, including a psychiatric one. However, one objection that I find is that in order for
the church to be more active to the one who is afflicted, the afflicted must see the church or
pastorate as an authority that can help in their situation. One cannot assume that members who are
afflicted are comfortable or believe that pastors or the church has the ability to understand their
problems. To help members who are diagnosed with a psychiatric weakness, the church must prove
that they are relevant in their area of weakness and have an authoritative role. Welch claims that to
adequately minister to others we must understand their weaknesses because understanding their
weaknesses will make our help more appropriate and meaningful. By having this knowledge, a
pastor can begin to acknowledge the weakness to the afflicted giving them the assurance that
someone does understand them and can help. This is insight for me to realize that the first step to
helping someone who suffers from a psychiatric diagnosis with sanctification is to understand them.
The next step in sanctification for the afflicted, would be understanding that strength can be found in
their weakness. I found this to be encouragement as a counselor understanding that even if there
way of life with a psychiatric diagnosis may never change or develop new habits to help correct
their weaknesses, strength can be found in the everyday perseverance, showing recognizable
spiritual growth traits through their actions of handling their psychiatric diagnosis.

Personal Essay: Faith And Spiritual Growth
How do you know what you believe in is what you should hold dear to you? Well, the truth is you
don't. I believe in Faith and Spiritual Growth. I find that it is efficient when living a happy and
healthy life. Without faith it would be extremely difficult to believe in much of anything. I have faith
that everything that is happening and will happen in my life will pass and is used to my advantage in
shaping a stronger spiritual connection. Not only do I believe these things, but I practice my faith
and engage in activities that allow me to grow stronger as a spiritual being. What led me to this
belief is some of the many traumatic events that have occurred throughout my life. For starters,
when I was in my early childhood years, my house burned down to the ground and I didn't have
anywhere to live. I stayed with my great grandma who is the most positive and influential person in
my life. Let's not forget that I'm one of six siblings raised by a single mother. Then a few years later

disadvantage. When I engage in activities important to my spiritual growth it includes things such as
prayer, meditation, reading and time spent with self in silence. While these things consist of none
other than myself; having friends that are willing to grow spiritually as well is helpful. I find this to
be beneficial in several aspects of my life that it creates a sense of peace within. Engaging in

The Effects Of Yoga On The Mind Body Spirit About A Person...
The review of literature on the benefits of yoga show the importance that exists between the mind,
body, and spirit. This review conducted shows the significance of link between the mind–body–
spirit about a person's overall health.
Diversity in yoga including type, intensity, and duration are what play significant roles in the levels
of perceived health benefits in comparison to traditional exercise. Thus, far stress reduction seems to
be the most proposed benefit associated with yoga therapy, even though time constraints are the
most common barrier. Due to the foreseen benefits of participating in yoga practice, this should
generate an increase on the need of yoga to improve overall health status.
As we continue to understand the important and vital role that yoga practice has will hopefully
continue to emerge in Western culture. As indicated from research, yoga plays a significant role in
the reduction of stress management and reduction of risk factors in chronic disease. In comparison
to traditional forms of medicine, yoga can be an integral part as a holistic alternative.
Yoga has been shown to affect not only mind, body and soul but overall general wellness. Yoga can
affect a multitude of reactions in the body and reap positive benefits on the muscles, organ systems,
glands and quality of life.
Although this literature review shows the potential benefits of including yoga as a part of general
fitness, there still lacks enough research to warrant its impact. For us

Authentic Self
This semester I am enrolled in a class dealing with victims of trauma. This has been a powerful class
for me, since that is the area where I feel lead to minister to others. At the same time, it has been
unsettling in some other areas because it has brought me to a place of revisiting old experiences and
their "clinically defined" consequences. This has strengthened and brought me new–found
confidence in who I am. I don't identify myself by my past, but by looking back from this place in
my life, I can see how God has shaped me through everything in my life. The entire process brought
me closer to God and gave me a deep faith that He is with us and that He will heal and restore. I am
so very grateful for who I am, and for the amazing life I have. Reading all the case studies from that
class reminded me of what it might have been without Him. The faith I have in Him is not for me
alone. Part of who I am includes having faith in his desire to see all His children saved and set free.
As I revisited, I was amazed anew in the healing power of God and was filled with renewed "fire" to
bring that message of hope to others. While I don't know exactly how I will minister at the end of
this journey, I know that He has equipped and empowered me specifically for this area.

Negro Spirituals
From this point of view we have essentially four classes, the almost ritualistic prayer songs or pure
Spirituals, the freer and more unrestrained evangelical "shouts" or camp–meeting songs, the folk
ballads so overlaid with the tradition of the Spirituals proper that their distinctive type quality has
almost been unnoticed until lately, and the work and labor songs of strictly significant character.
Indeed, in the pure Spirituals one can trace the broken fragments of an evangelical folk liturgy, with
confession, exhortation, "mourning," conversion and "love–feast" rejoicing as the general stages of a
Protestant folk–mass. It is not a question of religious content or allusion, for the great majority of
the Negro songs have this more delicate question of caliber of feeling and type of folk use. The
distinctiveness of the Spirituals after all and their finest meaning resides in their musical elements.
The characteristic beauty of the folk song is harmonic, in distinction to the more purely rhythmic
stress in the secular music of the Negro, which is the basis of "ragtime" and "jazz"; while regarding
the one as the African component in them, and the other as the modifying influence of the religious
hymn.
In the United States the rhythmic element, though still dominant, has ceded measurably to the
melodic, the dance having given way to religious worship,

Analysis Of Sonny's Blues By James Baldwin
Transformation in the Story, "Sonny's Blues" by James Baldwin
Introduction
The story, "Sonny's Blues" is not simply the story of the experience of the narrator. Rather, it is a
story that captures his inner transformation as well the spiritual progression that his previous
experiences of death and loss have influenced. Yes, it is. In that, the story starts as an identified or
unfamiliar algebra teacher tries to familiarize with something at the same time riding the
passageway to school. The teacher and the narrator of the story exit the subway and walks towards
the school, his anxiety and fear mounting pressure on him regarding the fate of his Sonny. The
brother has been detained for peddling heroin. At the same time, thinking about the fate of his
brother reminds of the teacher of his students, who are subjected to limited possibilities in a harsh
and hostile world. The storyteller postulates that several of his schoolgirls may be by now be
undertaking drugs, as, for instance, heroin. The summary provided above captures that indeed, the
story based on the inner transformations that he attains from his previous experiences, that us the
fate of his brother, death, and loss. Attributable to the elucidations provided above, this paper in
writing seeks to substantiate the fact the story "Sonny's Blues" is not just an illustration of the
experiences of the narrator, but the story based on his inner transformation.

Use Of Language And Concepts Depicted Throughout The...
Expression is imperative to the human condition and is the primary reason why music has managed
to subside throughout the centuries in various forms. For many, music extends beyond rhythm and
beat, and is a means of communicating one's experiences and narrating those experiences to their
comprehension of the world. For African Americans, music was a symbol of cultural identity and a
way to translate the daily oppressions they were forced to endure. Insight and evidence into this is
depicted widely throughout the Spirituals and the Blues, where the hardships of slavery and troubles
associated with being African American are greatly expressed. While African American music has
evolved and new genres have sprung into existence, differences in the ways that they communicate
and express themselves have arisen. However, some aspects have remained similar and language
usage has demonstrated a correlation between the two. The songs "Soon I Will Be Done" and
"Trouble in Mind" demonstrate how use of language and concepts depicted within the Blues emits
evidence to its emergence from the spirituals. In the spiritual "Soon I Will Be Done", the writer
discusses how the sufferings and difficulties that they are momentarily facing will transcend into a
distant memory due to the hope that is near. This hope is evidently God as the writer clearly states
"Soon I will be done with the troubles of the world. Going home to live with God". Throughout the

The Impact of Negro Spirituals on Today's Music Essay
The Impact of Negro Spirituals on Today's Music
I believe that it would be difficult for someone to make the argument that Negro spirituals have not
been influential in the field of music, much less the realm of gospel music today. However, church
members often do not make the time to reflect on the heritage of a hymn or song to realize the
meaning that the particular piece has carried with it through the decades, even centuries. With this in
mind, I am going to look at the history of the Negro spiritual and then at specific hymns in the 1991
Baptist Hymnal, published by Convention Press, to see just what impact the Negro spiritual has had
on today's church music. I believe that we will find that these songs have had a ... Show more

At first, however, slaves were not using their music to glorify the God worshipped by their masters.
Obviously, they had brought their religion with them, one considered pagan and inappropriate by
Christians in the American colonies. Christian missionaries were very disapproving regarding the
religious practices of the slaves, and they began to verbalize their disapproval and work to convert
the new African slaves. Seventeenth century author Morgan Godwin describes their religious
practices thus: ". . . nothing is more barbarous, and contrary to Christianity, than their . . . Idolatrous
Dances, and Revels; in which they usually spend the Sunday . . . And here, that I may not be thought
too rashly to impute Idolatry to their Dances, my Conjecture is raised upon this ground . . . for that
they use their Dances as a means to procure Rain: Some of them having been known to beg this
Liberty upon the Week Days, in order thereunto" (qtd. in Maultsby 3). Apparently, slave owners did
not immediately set out to influence the religious practices of their slaves; however, it would not be
long before the masters began to insist that their slaves practice their religion, Christianity.
I have found very little regarding the reception of the Africans to Christianity; nevertheless, they
were converted, and their music changed to

Because I had struggled so much at the beginning of my practice, I developed empathy for those
who were starting their exploration of meditation. I had gathered a reputation for a gentle and
accessible approach to starting meditation. So, when I started mapping out the content of The Power
of Meditation, I realized I did have something to say because I had been helping other people
navigate around the same obstacles I had encountered myself.
The Power of Meditation
To me, the power of meditation is that the person meditating gets so much for such a small
investment. In beginning classes about spirituality, I start the class with a short five minutes of
unstructured quiet time. That investment of five minutes of quiet time yields a compelling benefit.
The tone of the class changes and we become silent, and aware of the always–present within and
around us. That 's the power of meditation: you get so much for so little.
Obstacles On The Path
One of the most challenging obstacles new meditators face is the expectation of instant results. I
remember a conversation with someone whose doctor recommended he learn to meditate. He had
heard that I wrote the book and wanted to ask me some questions. Mind you; he didn 't want to read
the book. He said to me, can 't you just give me what meditation is about in 5 quick bullet points so
that I can decide whether or not it 's for me.

What I Learned in the Course of Spiritual Life and Growth
I have learned to live my life through trial and error; I believe mistakes should be accepted without
regret. I didn't always think in this manner, I originally was a perfectionist. I strived to be the best at
everything I did and it stunted my growth in life for quite some time. After I understood the value of
my life, I realized the key was to live genuinely; to live for a purpose that was not only important to
myself, but to others as well. I was not taught morality, I had to learn it the hard way. The course,
Spiritual Life and Growth, has taught me morality to some extent. On the first week of attending
Spiritual Life and Growth, I decided to take a break from my commission based job for a few years;
I understood the consequences– if I did not sell I did not earn. I began to cleanse myself, by
answering the questions, "Who am I? What do I love?" I was able to truly tap into myself:
spiritually, and I understood I was forced to find a new career path, because of the love I had for
myself, and let go of my prior job. My career, of the past ten years, has been extremely stressful, and
is likely responsible for my high blood pressure condition presently. I realized, I would lose
business, and my current competitors would likely collect commission checks on business I was
supposed to earn. However, I made my schooling a priority, and I accepted Autumn with open arms.
In "Let Your Life Speak: Listening For The Voice Of Vocation", Parker J. Palmer (2000) stated
"Autumn

Here are a few key points about the relationship between money and spirituality:- Money itself is neutral - it's how we think about and use money that matters spiritually. With the right mindset, money can be a tool for good. - Some spiritual traditions teach that desiring money leads to attachment and greed, which causes suffering. However, having enough money to meet basic needs and support charitable causes need not involve attachment.- True abundance comes from within, not from what we own. Spiritual practices like gratitude, generosity and living simply can help us feel abundant regardless of financial status. - Money is a form of energy flow. Blockages in the flow due to fear, guilt or scarcity ment

Spiritual Baptist Mourning The Spiritual Baptist religion is a religion that is a combination of elements of the African and Christian religions in which most of the customs and practiced doctrine are taken from the King James Version of the Bible. Spiritual Baptists believe their religion was derived from John the Baptist. This religion is a system of beliefs and practices e.g. baptism, pilgrimages, thanksgiving and mourning. Some of the items used within this religion include the shepherd rod, cross, tariya, lothar, water, calabash, flowers, candles and candle sticks, incense and bell. It also involves being filled with the spirit, shouting, speaking in unknown tongues, ringing of bells, and providing spiritual assistance to those in need (Peza, 1999). To the ... • 10. The Spiritual Growth of Lily Owens in The Secret Life of... The Secret Life of Bees delineates an inspirational story in which the community, friendship and faith guide the human spirit to overcome anything. The story follows Lily Owens, a 14 year old girl who desperately wants to discover the cause of her mothers death. Her father T. Ray gives her no answers, which leads their maid, Rosaleen, to act as her guardian. Together, Lily and Rosaleen run away to Tiburon, South Carolina and find a welcoming community. It is in Tiburon that Lily learns many life lessons, including many about herself. In her novel The Secret Life of Bees, Sue Monk Kidd explores a theme of spiritual growth through Lily's search for home as well as a maternal figure. The bees symbolize Lily's unspoken guides throughout ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This concept leads Lily to believe that the Virgin Mary is in many ways her mother, even though she is a mother to thousands of other people as well (Emanuel 41). Lily receives support and love from August and the community like the bees, though it is a secret to the rest of the world. The bees act as pathfinders for Lily as she learns more about herself, along with Zach Sue Monk Kidd utilizes the character Zach to assist Lily in understanding the power of her choices. Zach reveals the power of choices that each individual can make. Before coming to Tiburon, Lily assumed that all African–Americans worked as housekeepers and she had certainly never heard of a black lawyer. She then meets Zach who wants to pursue a career as a lawyer and August who chooses to work as a beekeeper. Zach wants to break free of social mores and become an attorney (Harken 57). Zach's imagination as he works toward achieving his dreams inspires Lily to think in a way that she has never thought of before. In Lily's story she depicts Zach as the lawyer that he has always dreamed of being. He teaches her that stereotypes do not have to be true as he works to do something that not many other African Americans had fulfilled before. Lily remembers, "You gotta imagine what's never been, Zach had said" (Kidd 126). Similarly, Zach helps Lily recognize that she can be in more than one community. • 14. Our Spiritual Growth How do I know that I am growing up spiritually? First of all, if we want to know whether we are growing up spiritually or not, we must know what the meaning of growing spiritually is. Spirituality is our human capacity for God which allows us to recognise God or the movement of God in our lives and, in the light of this recognition and experience of God, our lived response to God (quoted from SF from the heart pdf). We can define growing up spiritually as the processes when our human capacity to recognize, experience, and response to God is increasing and we much more love and value God as our partner of marriage. The processes are through the steps how we encounter God, what we know of God, and how we love God. The first step of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I want to know God perfectly, God with a perfect purpose. And I have the truth revealed in my live through many experience with God. Every time I know God more or something new, I feel joy and amazed how awesome and almighty God is, I have my faith grow up. I got the most of knowledge in my Senior High and University. Then, my knowledge is strengthened within the community of church. But with more knowledge, we have more responsibility to God which is to do the right things according what we have already known. Knowing God is like knowing and understanding your spouse, it is not only for the theologians, but all the follower of Christ. The purpose of theology is to become more like Jesus Christ. For me, until now, I am still growing in my theology, and I am looking forward to know and understand God much more, knowing His every plan in my life. The last step of the spiritual growth is the spirituality itself, how we love God. From the Bible, we can see Matthew 22:37 that we must love the God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with your entire mind and we can see John 14:15 that if we love God, we will obey God's commandments. Loving God means that we love God as the first priority and obey His commandments. It is also said in the bible John 4:21, whoever loves God, must love his brother also. God is ... • 18. Conflicts Are Inevitable But They Initiate Changes And... Conflicts are inevitable but they initiate changes and opportunities for spiritual growth. Interpersonal conflicts are not usually thought of as a Bible topic. However, there is an exorbitant amount on the subject in regards to dealing with other people. There is at least one passage in every book in the New Testament to believers to live at peace with one another. The largest part is found in the teachings of Jesus and His apostles. No matter what the conflict may be the Bible 's advice is spiritually sound and practical for promoting peace and harmony, whomever and whatever the conflict may be. We are repeatedly instructed to love one another as seen in John 13:34, "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." These verses tell us to love one another and sacrifice one's self. This kind of love should be extended to strangers, for we are all of the same flesh, and created after the image of God. One another should live in peace and harmony as stated in Romans 15:5, "May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had" The ones who are strong should be patient with those who are weaker. Our goal is to not only please ourselves but to lift them up so to please God. Even Jesus did not put himself first. For it is written of him that "the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me" (Romans 15:3). So that the body of Christ can with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. Money And Spirituality Money & Spirituality – Do They Mix? By Anisa Aven Aug 17, 2007 The hoary argument that you cannot have both – spirituality and abundance – continues to proliferate and entangle the minds and experience of many seekers. As a culture, we constantly deal with the subconscious remnants caused by the conflict between money and spirituality. We have allowed toxic ideas to pervade our unlimited essence like a virus destroying our intrinsic right to wealth and fulfillment. Ideas such as 'money is the root of all evil ', that 'it 's easier to get a camel through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into heaven ', and that 'if you are rich, then you must be either a crook, selfish, or hardened ' abound in the global consciousness poisoning our natural right to wealth. Additionally, the infamous subconscious impression amongst many spiritual practitioners and seekers, 'you cannot be spiritual and a servant of the Divine, if you charge for your talent or knowledge ' continues to be the self–imposed prison that forces many spiritual workers to thrash about in a sea of lack. These are just an infinitesimal sampling of the money–and– spirituality–don 't–mix disease. Indeed, if one becomes consumed with the pursuit of wealth from the external vantage point, their spiritual unification will be compromised. They may achieve wealth but at the cost of the fulfillment of their divine destiny and at the expense of personal peace. On the other side, when one pursues ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Importance Of Spiritual Formation And Social Action Some respondents reported that, while they were very eager to be engaged with LMAW and that they had a long and deep appreciation for the importance of spiritual formation and social action, they also felt that within their usual "church life" these two things are so disjointed as to be almost irreconcilable. One respondent said that a spiritual practice that fails to reflect action becomes "self perception grooming" and another said "prayer seems important, but also inadequate, [it is] also one of the only things I can do to make a difference. So I keep praying about it. Just like I keep clicking on all the online petitions I see about it – but with little faith it will bring about any major change any time soon." These, and other respondents have had a hard time engaging with their church family. Some even went as far as to say "I was discouraged by my church to participate". I suspect, however, that the disconnect, and subsequent sense of being a lone voice, unsupported by the wider church, added to their feelings of aloneness. No doubt the protracted nature of Australia's mistreatment of asylum seekers and the lack of a general uprising of Christian community has also contributed to the sense of hopelessness. I do not believe that these feelings are caused exclusively by their LMAW involvement but their involvement with a group (see below) of like–minded individuals may well have exacerbated their general aloneness and hopelessness. One character that stands out and makes a spiritual growth is Elizabeth Proctor. Elizabeth allows her frustrations of her depression to overcome her religious beliefs which separates herself from God and her marriage. She grows spiritually and begins to understand the things going on around her which was the strength she needed in the beginning. At the start of the play, Elizabeth is heartbroken her husband, John Proctor, has committed adultery seven months ago with Abagail Williams. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With everything going on, Elizabeth allows her distress to overcome her Puritan beliefs. During the time of the Salem witch trials, many accusations were made. Because Elizabeth knows Abagail wishes to take her place, she initially becomes frustrated when Rev. Hale reveals Abagail has accused her of witchery in court. Elizabeth's first instinct is to get her husband to "tell her she's a whore" and to break the "promise" made that night (1128). Deep down Elizabeth knows her frustrations are overcoming her religion but she does not yet realize it. When John returns home, he implies Elizabeth is judging him of his flaws instead of looking for the goodness in him (1124). John, during this time, was more spiritual and "in–tune" with God more than Elizabeth who only thought of herself. Her frustrations and insecurities overpowered her consideration of others feelings. Finally, Elizabeth's spiritual growths are apparent as she begins to understand the tings going on around her. Because Elizabeth's name has been called in court, she is imprisoned. During this time, John confesses to the court of everything to save his wife and their family. Elizabeth then realizes the good in her husband and says she must forgive him in order for him to forgive himself (1161). She becomes more understanding towards her husband's decision and begins to stand by him. The strength Elizabeth gains becomes even more apparent as she tells Rev. Hale she is ... Developing a Christian Worldview of Spiritual Formation and Growth Liberty University Abstract This paper looks at how spiritual formation and growth can develop through a person's lifetime. The goal is to show how modern day human development theories relate to Christlike living. Erikson's developmental theory and Kohlberg's moral development theory both give a guide to maturity in a secular worldview. By looking at Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, we can see God's directions to living a Christlike life in a Christian worldview. It's also important to look at the influence of the Holy Spirit in developing a person's spiritual life. By relating a worldly view of personal development with god's guidance through scripture and the Holy ... The African–American spiritual, characterized by syncopation, polyrhythmic structure, and the pentatonic scale of five whole tones, is, above all, a deeply emotional song. Spirituals are really the most characteristic product of the race genius as yet in America. But the very elements which make them uniquely expressive of the Negro make them at the same time deeply representative of the soil that produced them. Spirituals were long thought to be the only original folk music of the United States, and research into its origin centered mainly on the nature and extent of its African ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While work songs dealt only with their daily life, spirituals were inspired by the message of Jesus Christ and his Good News (Gospel) of the Bible, "You can be saved". They are different from hymns and psalms, because they were a way of sharing the hard condition of being a slave. Many slaves in town and in plantations tried to run to a "free country", that they called "my home" or "Sweet Canaan, the Promised Land". This country was on the Northern side of Ohio River, that they called "Jordan". Some negro spirituals refer to the Underground Railroad, an organization for helping slaves to run away. The Spirituals are spiritual. Conscious artistry and popular conception alike should never rob them of this heritage, untrue to their tradition and to the folk genius to give them another tone. That they are vulnerable of both crude and refined secularization is no excuse. Even though their own makers worked them up from the "shout" and the rhythmic elements of the sensuous dance, in their finished form and basic emotional effect all of these elements were completely sublimated in the sincere intensities of religious seriousness. To call them Spirituals and treat them otherwise is a travesty. Emotionally, African slave songs were far from simple. They are not only spread over the whole length of human moods, with the traditional religious overtone skillfully insinuated in each ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 55. African American Culture n the African American Culture, we are often copied in many different ways. From our hairstyles, dances, art, lifestyle, clothing , etc. The African–American culture hardly receives credit for what we do. Celebrities like the Kardashian's for example, they've used our ( the African–American culture) hairstyles and acted as if it was their creation by giving them new names. So, now everyone outside of the African–American culture tries it and acts like They've never seen it. We've been wearing braids and cornrows since forever! Living in the African–American culture we are very misunderstood. Many take the way that some of us talk or look as aggressive when we really are nice and very respectable. We were taught to always respect our elders and to also treat the janitor with the same respect as the CEO. Many also take our slang and automatically thinks that we're uneducated. We are some very intelligent people actually they we talk shouldn't put us in such a category. We go to school like everyone else and earn diplomas and degrees. Another thing about growing up in the African–American culture is that many of us were very religious. They sung old negro spirituals that until this day are still being used to help us get through tough times. We have always had faith that's how we've accomplished so much. One thing I can say is that African– American culture has changed inn many ways with slavery being one of them. Our ancestors were slaves and fought so that we can be free and we are. African–American culture was more religious based but those times have changed within some families of our culture with this new era. We were always taught how to survive even in the worst conditions. If it's one thing that we know how to do it's how to survive. The African–American culture is treated bad on a daily basis but, we don't let it stop us. Whenever we fall, we get right back up but stronger and better this time. The Black Power movement is very important to us. Know that Black Power is real and we will reign. Our leadership skills are amazing. We were taught to use our creativity to achieve and to never give up. Growing up in the African–American culture, is pretty exciting I would say. We love soul food Sundays with ... • 63. Christian Spiritual Formation: How Important Is Spiritual... How important is spiritual formation? To comprehend the importance of spiritual formation it is important to define the term. It must be noted that spiritual formation has different meanings to different people. Thus spiritual formation is defined as "The dynamics of shaping the human spirit towards maturity and consonance' (The Dictionary of Christian Spiritual Formation (2003, 107). However, for the purpose of this paper, spiritual Christian formation is defined as a journey through which we open our hearts to a deeper connection to God. Thus we are active participants with God, who is forever inviting us into a relationship with him. Thus according to Tang, "The components of Christian spiritual formation are knowing and loving God, knowing and loving ourselves, knowing and loving our neighbours and being mindful of the presence of God in our daily routine living"(2006).Thus, Spiritual formation is important because closeness with God brings us real freedom and completeness. "If the son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed" (Jn.8:36). Similarly the scriptures tells us "For in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power" (Col. 2:9–10). Furthermore, we are eternal beings who have lost sight of what it means to live eternally. Hearing her talk about her journey to happiness is a true testimonial to naysayers who are having doubts about the positive effects of yoga. Corn's journey to happiness, as she conveyed, was not an easy one. She had to clamber her way from an unsettled place as a child growing up in an unstable home. She explained how her blue–collar working class parents raised her in an environment where religious practices were not present and how, as a little girl, she thought of herself as "uneducated." She abused drugs and the tender age of 19 and was diagnosed with "Obsessive Compulsive Disorder." She even suffered from an anxiety disorder, but these dark episodes of her life eventually led to healing and happiness once she discovered yoga. Body Prayer One of the big ideas in the Corne's narrative that would be a foreign concept to many is "Body Prayer through yoga." In a nutshell, Corne's says one can use positions of one's body as a way as an actively pray for others. For example, positioning your hands in an upward position during meditations could be a form of sending prayers God in the heavens. As I reflect on body prayer, I feel it would not be wise to guide school age children in body prayer, but for me personally, I can see how impactful it could be in my life. The course Interpreting the Bible (BIB 230) is no exception to this concept in furthering my knowledge. It challenged me to think critically about the passages I am reading and to look at each word that the author uses. Learning to interpret the Bible takes a lot of research and many hours of reading the scriptures to comprehend how God is speaking through each author, which this course strengthened those habits for me. There were many concepts that I learned during this course and there are a few of them that I have integrated into my study habits each time I read a passage. The first one is authorial intent, and according to Duvall & Hays (2012), it is when the author stresses the determination of the meaning of the text (p. 193). This concept consists of the reader researching to find out exactly what the author is saying and to make sure they remove their own interpretation so that the author's meaning is only comprehended. When an author speaks, they are attempting to communicate the meaning using specific words and phrases in the writing, so we must refrain from adding our own interpretation to the meaning. This compels me to forget what I have learned in the past and read with a fresh open mind which then helps me renew my knowledge about the scriptures. This goes hand in hand with finding out the literary meaning the author is conveying. "Literary meaning refers to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 79. Prayer Is The Most Essential Of Spiritual Growth One of the most difficult questions a Christian is often asked is where they are in their spiritual journey. Celebration of Discipline helps us understand the important aspects that help deepen our faith. Foster writes that there are three categories of disciplines me must learn: inward, outward, and corporate. Each category has four subcategories. I believe that prayer, service, and worship are the most essential in spiritual growth. The first category Foster writes about is inward discipline. Inward discipline is an act that other believes cannot measure. Inward disciplines are personal to your relationship with God. The four types of inward disciplines are meditation, prayer, fasting, and study. Although they are all important, I think that prayer is the most beneficial. The discipline of prayer brings us into the deepest work of the human spirit (Page 33). Prayer is the key to God transforming us. As we learn to pray, we learn that our will eventually molds to His will. I have been hearing a lot of messages lately about the Lord's Prayer. When we say "Thy will be done" we are not asking God to give us what we want, we are asking God to transform what we want to become what He wants. Prayer is something that we should center our daily lives around. When we begin to prayer God meets us where we are, no matter how far along we are in our journey. God uses prayer to push us deeper into who He is. Sometimes prayer can be frustrating because we do not feel like our prayers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My Spiritual And Discipleship Condition Essay "Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting" (KJV Ps. 139:23–24). In this verse, David asks God to help him search his heart so that he can be closer to God. Without God, the process of self–evaluation is impossible as David states in his psalm. What makes David such a good source for advice? In the Bible, David is known as "a man after God's own heart" (1 Sam. 13:14). If David recognized the importance of self–evaluation, then every Christian should continually evaluate themselves according to God's principles in the Bible. My biggest fear is change. In the past, I have had many bad experiences with change. For example, the most traumatic change in my life was the move from England to South Korea. The leaving behind of friends, culture, and comfort caused great distress. Another challenge and change was moving from South Korea to America when my mother became very sick. This change had a very big impact on anxiety as the fear of losing my mother changed me emotionally. During sixth grade, I went to the middle school and was bullied. Dreams As A Mode Of Freedom The theme of dreams as a mode of freedom, an escape, is commonly seen in the literature of African American writers that can be traced as far back as the Negro Spirituals during the time of slavery. While the motif of dreams is used far and wide in African American literature, it is in no way a static matter, but rather a dynamic entity that writers internalize and redefine to express the sentiments of their time. The meaning of the dream progressed accordingly to racial tensions in the country and the freedom African Americans were allotted to express themselves politically and creatively. Starting with Negro Spirituals, hopes and dreams were often connected to a desire of death to escape slavery. Following emancipation though, the dream motif began to articulate a more hopeful future. While some of the poems by the Harlem Renaissance writer Langston Hughes harbor a melancholy attitude echoing that of the Negro Spirituals, Hughes's work can mainly be seen as the turning point for how the motif of dreams would be portrayed in the works of prominent black authors and figureheads. Langston Hughes was the beginning of the positive portrayal of the dream. At the time, Hughes flourished within his community and it wouldn't be until many years later that the full breadth of his work would be celebrated. He inspired the likes of Lorraine Hansberry and Martin Luther King Jr. to bring his message to the nation. The dreams expressed by Hansberry and King Jr. reflects those of Hughes' ... We want to instill in them a desire to learn more about Christ and equip them to pursue a deeper knowledge of God on their own. Students in the Discipleship Download section would meet once a week with a teacher – either the youth pastor or a trained volunteer. For four–months they would go through the outlined curriculum in order to cover all of the areas of importance. The classes would be formatted in a 45– 60 minute setting that would spend the first portion teaching and the second portion open for questions and discussion. At the end of the four–month period, the teacher would assess each of his/her students to ensure that they have met all of the key objectives. This section would give special attention to five key areas of growth: The Lordship of Christ, identity in Christ, worship, scripture, and prayer. • 108. The Importance Of Spiritual Growth We Christians were spiritually dead from sin until Christ saved us. The great news is that His death on the cross provided us with spiritual birth, a new life. Moreover, "spiritual birth should lead to spiritual growth and development" (Koessler 72). Spiritual growth is a growth in knowledge of God, therefore, entering into a deeper relationship with Him as well as growing in obedience (74). When it comes to spiritual growth, the role of grace and effort is vital. We often ask ourselves how do they actually work together to achieve the growth. Koessler, the author of a book True Discipleship describes their relationship in spiritual growth that "spiritual growth is ultimately a matter of grace", but it demands a "measure of Spirit–empowered effort to take a place" (79). In order for us Christians to experience the growth, we have to struggle to know and maintain the proper relationship of grace and effort where our effort is empowered by grace. Before talking about further explanation of the relationship between grace and effort, it is very important to know what each word means. Grace is receiving something that a person does not deserve, with their own power or worth. And according to Kossler, effort "refers to the responsibilities that come as a part of the Christian life" (113). Both of them have roles in the spiritual growth of; hence we should not emphasize only one when we apply them to our life. For us, God showed His grace by providing salvation through Christ. ... • 116. Edward T. Welch Spiritual Growth In The Face Of... Journal of Biblical Counseling: Journal Reflection The article chosen for the Journal Reflection assignment was, "Spiritual Growth in the Face of Psychiatric Disorders" written by Edward T. Welch. The author's purpose for this article was to identify the basic theological tools to help those who identify themselves in psychiatric terms, and then illustrate what sanctification can look like for three individuals who live with a physically based weakness. Welch hoped to accomplish this purpose by first acknowledging that a division between psychiatric diagnoses and Scripture exist, second claiming that in order for a pastor to properly counsel there are first steps of pastoral care to be taken, third pastors must remember two basic theological ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This allows those who identify with psychiatric diagnosis to recognize that Scripture does speak to them and they can be loved by the church community and grow in Christ. Welch suggests that in order for the church to attain this goal the church should be more active when someone has a physical affliction, including a psychiatric one. However, one objection that I find is that in order for the church to be more active to the one who is afflicted, the afflicted must see the church or pastorate as an authority that can help in their situation. One cannot assume that members who are afflicted are comfortable or believe that pastors or the church has the ability to understand their problems. To help members who are diagnosed with a psychiatric weakness, the church must prove that they are relevant in their area of weakness and have an authoritative role. Welch claims that to adequately minister to others we must understand their weaknesses because understanding their weaknesses will make our help more appropriate and meaningful. By having this knowledge, a pastor can begin to acknowledge the weakness to the afflicted giving them the assurance that someone does understand them and can help. This is insight for me to realize that the first step to helping someone who suffers from a psychiatric diagnosis with sanctification is to understand them. The next step in sanctification for the afflicted, would be understanding that strength can be found in their weakness. I found this to be encouragement as a counselor understanding that even if there way of life with a psychiatric diagnosis may never change or develop new habits to help correct their weaknesses, strength can be found in the everyday perseverance, showing recognizable spiritual growth traits through their actions of handling their psychiatric diagnosis. ... I find that it is efficient when living a happy and healthy life. Without faith it would be extremely difficult to believe in much of anything. I have faith that everything that is happening and will happen in my life will pass and is used to my advantage in shaping a stronger spiritual connection. Not only do I believe these things, but I practice my faith and engage in activities that allow me to grow stronger as a spiritual being. What led me to this belief is some of the many traumatic events that have occurred throughout my life. For starters, when I was in my early childhood years, my house burned down to the ground and I didn't have anywhere to live. I stayed with my great grandma who is the most positive and influential person in my life. Let's not forget that I'm one of six siblings raised by a single mother. When I engage in activities important to my spiritual growth it includes things such as prayer, meditation, reading and time spent with self in silence. While these things consist of none other than myself; having friends that are willing to grow spiritually as well is helpful. This review conducted shows the significance of link between the mind–body– spirit about a person's overall health. Diversity in yoga including type, intensity, and duration are what play significant roles in the levels of perceived health benefits in comparison to traditional exercise. Thus, far stress reduction seems to be the most proposed benefit associated with yoga therapy, even though time constraints are the most common barrier. Due to the foreseen benefits of participating in yoga practice, this should generate an increase on the need of yoga to improve overall health status. As we continue to understand the important and vital role that yoga practice has will hopefully continue to emerge in Western culture. As indicated from research, yoga plays a significant role in the reduction of stress management and reduction of risk factors in chronic disease. In comparison to traditional forms of medicine, yoga can be an integral part as a holistic alternative. Yoga has been shown to affect not only mind, body and soul but overall general wellness. Yoga can affect a multitude of reactions in the body and reap positive benefits on the muscles, organ systems, glands and quality of life. Although this literature review shows the potential benefits of including yoga as a part of general fitness, there still lacks enough research to warrant its impact. For us ... This has been a powerful class for me, since that is the area where I feel lead to minister to others. At the same time, it has been unsettling in some other areas because it has brought me to a place of revisiting old experiences and their "clinically defined" consequences. This has strengthened and brought me new–found confidence in who I am. I don't identify myself by my past, but by looking back from this place in my life, I can see how God has shaped me through everything in my life. The entire process brought me closer to God and gave me a deep faith that He is with us and that He will heal and restore. I am so very grateful for who I am, and for the amazing life I have. Reading all the case studies from that class reminded me of what it might have been without Him. The faith I have in Him is not for me alone. Part of who I am includes having faith in his desire to see all His children saved and set free. As I revisited, I was amazed anew in the healing power of God and was filled with renewed "fire" to bring that message of hope to others. The three major disciplines are "Inward" which is an individual's personal growth in the Lord, "Outward" which is how a person can serve the people around them, and lastly, "Corporate" is how a church can grow in the Lord as a community. From this point of view we have essentially four classes, the almost ritualistic prayer songs or pure Spirituals, the freer and more unrestrained evangelical "shouts" or camp–meeting songs, the folk ballads so overlaid with the tradition of the Spirituals proper that their distinctive type quality has almost been unnoticed until lately, and the work and labor songs of strictly significant character. Indeed, in the pure Spirituals one can trace the broken fragments of an evangelical folk liturgy, with confession, exhortation, "mourning," conversion and "love–feast" rejoicing as the general stages of a Protestant folk–mass. It is not a question of religious content or allusion, for the great majority of the Negro songs have this more delicate question of caliber of feeling and type of folk use. The distinctiveness of the Spirituals after all and their finest meaning resides in their musical elements. The characteristic beauty of the folk song is harmonic, in distinction to the more purely rhythmic stress in the secular music of the Negro, which is the basis of "ragtime" and "jazz"; while regarding the one as the African component in them, and the other as the modifying influence of the religious hymn. In the United States the rhythmic element, though still dominant, has ceded measurably to the melodic, the dance having given way to religious worship, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of Sonny's Blues By James Baldwin Transformation in the Story, "Sonny's Blues" by James Baldwin Introduction The story, "Sonny's Blues" is not simply the story of the experience of the narrator. Rather, it is a story that captures his inner transformation as well the spiritual progression that his previous experiences of death and loss have influenced. Yes, it is. In that, the story starts as an identified or unfamiliar algebra teacher tries to familiarize with something at the same time riding the passageway to school. The teacher and the narrator of the story exit the subway and walks towards the school, his anxiety and fear mounting pressure on him regarding the fate of his Sonny. The storyteller postulates that several of his schoolgirls may be by now be undertaking drugs, as, for instance, heroin. • 144. Use Of Language And Concepts Depicted Throughout The... Expression is imperative to the human condition and is the primary reason why music has managed to subside throughout the centuries in various forms. For many, music extends beyond rhythm and beat, and is a means of communicating one's experiences and narrating those experiences to their comprehension of the world. For African Americans, music was a symbol of cultural identity and a way to translate the daily oppressions they were forced to endure. Insight and evidence into this is depicted widely throughout the Spirituals and the Blues, where the hardships of slavery and troubles associated with being African American are greatly expressed. While African American music has evolved and new genres have sprung into existence, differences in the ways that they communicate and express themselves have arisen. However, some aspects have remained similar and language usage has demonstrated a correlation between the two. The songs "Soon I Will Be Done" and "Trouble in Mind" demonstrate how use of language and concepts depicted within the Blues emits evidence to its emergence from the spirituals. In the spiritual "Soon I Will Be Done", the writer discusses how the sufferings and difficulties that they are momentarily facing will transcend into a distant memory due to the hope that is near. This hope is evidently God as the writer clearly states "Soon I will be done with the troubles of the world. Going home to live with God". Throughout the Spiritual, the writer's circumstances are ... The Impact of Negro Spirituals on Today's Music Essay The Impact of Negro Spirituals on Today's Music I believe that it would be difficult for someone to make the argument that Negro spirituals have not been influential in the field of music, much less the realm of gospel music today. However, church members often do not make the time to reflect on the heritage of a hymn or song to realize the meaning that the particular piece has carried with it through the decades, even centuries. With this in mind, I am going to look at the history of the Negro spiritual and then at specific hymns in the 1991 Baptist Hymnal, published by Convention Press, to see just what impact the Negro spiritual has had on today's church music. I believe that we will find that these songs have had a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At first, however, slaves were not using their music to glorify the God worshipped by their masters. Obviously, they had brought their religion with them, one considered pagan and inappropriate by Christians in the American colonies. Christian missionaries were very disapproving regarding the religious practices of the slaves, and they began to verbalize their disapproval and work to convert the new African slaves. Seventeenth century author Morgan Godwin describes their religious practices thus: ". . . nothing is more barbarous, and contrary to Christianity, than their . . . Idolatrous Dances, and Revels; in which they usually spend the Sunday . . . And here, that I may not be thought too rashly to impute Idolatry to their Dances, my Conjecture is raised upon this ground . . . for that they use their Dances as a means to procure Rain: Some of them having been known to beg this Liberty upon the Week Days, in order thereunto" (qtd. in Maultsby 3). Apparently, slave owners did not immediately set out to influence the religious practices of their slaves; however, it would not be long before the masters began to insist that their slaves practice their religion, Christianity. Because I had struggled so much at the beginning of my practice, I developed empathy for those who were starting their exploration of meditation. I had gathered a reputation for a gentle and accessible approach to starting meditation. So, when I started mapping out the content of The Power of Meditation, I realized I did have something to say because I had been helping other people navigate around the same obstacles I had encountered myself. The Power of Meditation To me, the power of meditation is that the person meditating gets so much for such a small investment. In beginning classes about spirituality, I start the class with a short five minutes of unstructured quiet time. That investment of five minutes of quiet time yields a compelling benefit. The tone of the class changes and we become silent, and aware of the always–present within and around us. That 's the power of meditation: you get so much for so little. Obstacles On The Path One of the most challenging obstacles new meditators face is the expectation of instant results. I didn't always think in this manner, I originally was a perfectionist. I strived to be the best at everything I did and it stunted my growth in life for quite some time. After I understood the value of my life, I realized the key was to live genuinely; to live for a purpose that was not only important to myself, but to others as well. I was not taught morality, I had to learn it the hard way. The course, Spiritual Life and Growth, has taught me morality to some extent. On the first week of attending Spiritual Life and Growth, I decided to take a break from my commission based job for a few years; I understood the consequences– if I did not sell I did not earn. I began to cleanse myself, by answering the questions, "Who am I? What do I love?" I was able to truly tap into myself: spiritually, and I understood I was forced to find a new career path, because of the love I had for myself, and let go of my prior job. My career, of the past ten years, has been extremely stressful, and is likely responsible for my high blood pressure condition presently. I realized, I would lose business, and my current competitors would likely collect commission checks on business I was supposed to earn. However, I made my schooling a priority, and I accepted Autumn with open arms. In "Let Your Life Speak: Listening For The Voice Of Vocation", Parker J. Palmer (2000) stated "Autumn ...
