Testing Scenarios
Class Discussion Cards
Thank you for downloading a resource from my store!
This set of 12 free testing scenario cards is designed to be used in class
discussions in the days leading up to a state standardized test. These cards
are based on state tests that involve reading and math. If you have a
different type of test, you can use the ideas on the cards and reword the
scenario to fit your testing situation.
Answers to these scenarios are open-ended and will vary based on the
testing situations your students will experience.
I hope you and your students find these scenarios and the accompanying
discussions helpful as you prepare for your standardized test.
Please let me know if you have any questions!
I’d be happy to help. My email is theknittedapple@gmail.com.
Thank you!
-Krista
It’s the day of the
test. You couldn’t sleep
because your little
brother was crying in
the next room. Then
you were almost late to
school. Now you feel
grumpy.
You’re stuck on a
tricky question and
feel like giving up.
You’ve already read
the question twice.
What could
you do?
One of the reading
passages is on a topic
you already know
about. You’re tempted
to race through it and
go straight to the
questions.
What could
you do?
What could
you do?
You look at the clock
and notice that you’ve
been working on the
same question for the
last 15 minutes.
What should you do?

What should you do?
You see one of your
classmates finish and
turn in her test. How
can that be? You still
have half of the test
left to finish, and then
you have to go back
and check your work.
What could
you do?
What should
you do?
You understand the
question, but the answer
choices don’t make sense.
You are sure there must
be a mistake in the test
because none of the
choices match your
answer.
What should you do?

You feel so proud! You
used all your strategies
on the first reading
passage. Go, you! Then
you realize there are still
four more passages to
go. You start to wonder
if you really need to use
strategies for EVERY
passage.
You’re stuck on a
word. You know
you’ve seen that
word before but
can’t remember
what it is or
what it means.

You’re feeling bored.
You were motivated
for the first 15
questions, but now
you just want to be
done.

you do?

A classmate near
you is trying to get
your attention. You
are distracted and
realize you don’t
remember the part
you just read.
You are finally finished and
can’t wait to read that new
book you started last night!
As soon as you turn in your
test you will get to read it!
You feel positive you bubbled
the answers correctly so you
don’t think you need to check
your answer document.
You used your
strategies, checked
your work, and feel
confident you did your
best. You turned in
your test but others
are still working.
