Mental Attitude: Closer Friends, Better Memory. “SuperAgers” are individuals who are 80 years of age or older but
have the cognitive ability of people in their 50s or 60s. In a recent study, psychological well-being questionnaires
completed by SuperAgers revealed that they had more satisfying, high-quality relationships than their cognitively average,
same-age peers. Study author Dr. Emily Rogalski writes, “You don't have to be the life of the party, but this study
supports the theory that maintaining strong social networks seems to be linked to slower cognitive decline.”
PLOS One, October 2017
Health Alert: Air Pollution May Harm Your Bones. An analysis of data concerning 9.2 million Medicare enrollees
revealed that even a small increase in exposure to air pollution raises the risk for osteoporosis and broken bones. In the
study, investigators found that individuals who lived in areas with higher levels of fine particular matter and black carbon
pollution had lower levels of an important bone remodeling hormone called parathyroid hormone and lower bone mineral
density than residents in areas with cleaner air. The Lancet Planetary Health, November 2017
Diet: Whole Grains Can Help with Weight Loss. A study involving 50 volunteers who were at risk for metabolic
syndrome revealed that consuming whole grains in place of refined grains for eight weeks led to reductions in weight and
markers of systemic inflammation. Senior author Dr. Tine Rask Licht writes, “Our analysis confirmed that there is a
sound scientific basis for the dietary recommendation to eat whole grains.” Gut, November 2017
Exercise: Low Fitness Leads to High Blood Pressure. Chinese researchers followed 2,438 men and women for nine
years and found that those with the lowest levels of cardiorespiratory fitness had an almost 2.5 times greater risk for
hypertension by the end of the study than the most physically active participants.
Journal of Human Hypertension, December 2017
Chiropractic: Workplace Exercise Reduces Neck Pain. A recent research review investigated the effectiveness of
workplace-based exercise interventions for reducing neck pain among office workers. The review, which included data
from 27 published studies, found that workplace-based strengthening exercises can reduce neck pain among workers
experiencing symptoms, especially when the exercises target the neck/shoulder region. Physical Therapy, October 2017
Wellness/Prevention: Get Online to Kick Smoking. Investigators examined the tobacco habits of more than 2,600
smokers who participated in an online smoking cessation community and found that after three months, 21% of the active
users of the website quit smoking while 11% of the passive users also kicked their smoking habit. Lead author Dr.
Amanda Graham explains, “Spending time with others who are actively engaged in quitting smoking in a place where
being a nonsmoker is supported and encouraged gives smokers the practical advice and support they need to stay with a
difficult behavior change… We know that quitting tobacco can be extremely difficult. These results demonstrate what we
hear from tobacco users, which is that online social connections and relationships can make a real difference.”
