Eczema Case Studies
Eczema is the familial term used in reference to atopic dermatitis, a common skin condition characterized by chronic inflammation. It causes erythema,
scaling, itching, crusting and oozing of the skin. The exact etiology of this condition remains unknown although it is suspected that genetic factors as
well as environmental factors might play a role in the development of atopic dermatitis in an individual[1].
In 2009, Haslund and colleagues conducted a study to evaluate the prevalence of
Staphylococcus aureus in patients with hand eczema compared to controls. Results showed that the bacterium was found in 48% of patients with hand
eczema, which was significantly higher than the 8% of controls[2]. Also, through cultures obtained from the
skin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Indeed, immunologic differences were observed between the skins of healthy individuals and atopic individuals. The indications were that an
immunologic dysregulation might be an important factor contributing to the etiology of atopic dermatitis. In this case, an immunomodulatory agent,
i.e, corticosteroids, should also be considered in the treatment of eczema to address this possible issue, as well as considered for long–term treatment
of the condition[16]. Furthermore, a genetically defective skin barrier function is a predisposing factor to atopic dermatitis that cannot be ignored. It
was observed that 15% of atopic individuals have a defective filaggrin gene, a crucial component in epidermal homeostasis. In these cases, bleach baths
wouldn't be beneficial, as they would not be treating the underlying problem[17].
Further, while the studies on bleach baths have shown encouraging results, one must nonetheless take into account that the worldwide use of sodium
hypochlorite might have possible side effects. More importantly, as mentioned earlier, if the sodium hypochlorite solution isn't capable of eradicating
the bacteria completely, does this treatment

The Greater Good By Peter Stockman

Ethics of "The Greater Good" will be focus on Thomas and Peter. "The Greater Good" is come from the concern of how people ought to act on

Orientalism in Art Essay
"What was the process of 'Orientalising' according to Edward Said? Discuss the notion of 'Otherness' from both a European and 'Eastern' point of view
using three examples of work for visual analysis."
The Near East or the Orient was a "place of Europe's greatest and richest and oldest colonies, the source of its civilizations and languages its cultural
contestant, and one of its deepest and most recurring images of the Other."[1] Edward Said describes the Orient as not an inert fact of nature but both
Orient and Occident as man made.[2] The argument Said presents is that the Orient is an "idea that has a history and a tradition of thought, imagery,
and vocabulary that have given it reality and presence in and for the West."[3]... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The exotic and romanticised perception of the East can be seen in the painting of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres titled "Le Bain turc." (Turkish Bath)
The painting was an eroticised fantasy of how the artist perceived women of the Orient. The women's body were drawn with some exaggeration to fit
into these notions of Orientalism as sensuality was seen as acceptable to the exotic Orient. In line with Said's argument of how the Orient was often
drawn based on the imagination of the artist, Rome was the furthest limit of Ingres's actual travel which would mean that he had never encountered
the Orient before.[14] The work was inspired by the letters sent by Lady Montague who recounted her visit in the women's bath in Istanbul. Taking
this inspiration, Ingres paints dozens of nude Turkish women sitting or lying on sofas with exaggerated poses, chatting, dancing and singing.
Nudity of the kind seen in the Parisian Salons would have been unacceptable in Victorian London however by the title and the subject matter being
the Eastern world; it was allowed public access in the 1900s. A question arises whether if the title had not been "Turkish Bath" but rather "Paris
Brothel" would the public approbation have been the same? The death of Sardanapalus by Delacroix is also a classic example of the
characterization of the Orient. The work was inspired by a play in Byron and it portrays the eastern ruler's brutal control over the destiny of the
people. However Sardanapalus is a work of

This Is What Happens To Your Brain On Sugar Essay
Title: THIS Is What Happens To Your Brain On Sugar

Teaser: Too much sugar in your diet can damage a protein that is essential in fighting Alzheimer's disease, in its early stages.
Article:
It's no secret; sugar, when consumed in excess leads you down the road to obesity and diabetes. Still, sugar–loaded foods and beverages have become a
way of life for many Americans. So much so, that the average person consumes about 20 teaspoons of sugar a day! That's about 14 teaspoons or 60
grams more than is recommended for a healthy diet. All that sugar not only makes you fat, but now experts agree it may also lead to Alzheimer's.
Here's what happens to your brain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This figure is thought to rise to over 125 million by 2050. This amounts to hundreds of billions of dollars spent on medical and social care because of
the cognitive effects of the disease.
Dr. Omar Kassaar, also from the University of Bath, further added that "excess sugar is well known to be bad for us when it comes to diabetes and
obesity, but this potential link with Alzheimer's disease is yet another reason that we should be controlling our sugar intake in our diets."
Why we crave the white stuff
Your brain has built–in evolutionary mechanisms that drive your cravings. Many of these mechanisms are meant for survival, one of the which is
eating. And of course, the release of hormones is also involved according to Tufts. When you eat something sweet and delicious, the good feeling of
the experience is determined in part by hormone receptors. Over time, these receptors become less sensitive to the hormones produced when we enjoy
a particular food – like chocolate cake. So, you'll need to consume more and more chocolate cake to have the same pleasant experience.
We're addicted and we may not know it!
But it's not just the obvious treats like sugary soda, candy, cookies and cakes that turn us into sugar addicts. Today's modern diet is so loaded with

Women in Anglo-Saxon England Essay
Women in Anglo–Saxon England
Anglo–Saxon literature was based on Germanic myths about battles, heroes, diseases, dragons and religion. Writers did not pay much attention to
female issues, and there are only few poems that talk about them. Beowulf and ""The Wife's Lament"" are two examples that briefly consider women's
lives in that time. Anglo–Saxon history and poetry portray women's lives as uneasy and dependent on their husbands' positions. Women had to endure
arranged marriages, abuse and male dominance.
Marriage meant very much to women particularly for their status and economic security. In the medieval era, people wed within their class and only a
slave could sometimes find his match ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Slavery was common in medieval England. Slave–women were treated with much less respect than the free ones, and their wergild was smaller: "If a
man raped a virgin who was the king's property, he had to pay fifty shillings to the king, while if she were a grinding–slave it would be twenty–five
shillings. And at last if the girl were a third class (no one knows what that meant) it would be only twelve shillings" (Fell 107). This system was very
easy on rich men. They were untouchable as long as they had the money to pay wergild. Ironically, abuse was accepted, and the king became richer
from it.

On the other hand, in the kingdom the king respected his queen and she played an important role. In the poem Beowulf, Wealhtheow is a Danish
queen and Hrothgar's wife. She is mentioned as Hrothgar's lover and sexual partner: "The lord of the Shieldings, their shelter in war, left the mead–hall
to lie with Wealhtheow, his queen and bedmate"(46). In the hall, Wealhtheow serves alcoholic drinks to all the guests (only women were allowed to
serve alcohol). She is a cup–bearer during the celebration: "So the Helming woman went on her rounds, queenly and dignified, decked out in rings,
offering the goblet to all ranks" (45). Since women were meant to stay out of trouble, they never got an opportunity to learn how to defend themselves.

Wife of Bath: Lack of Experience is the Key to Happiness The Middle Ages, a time of strict societal rules and hierarchy, was dominated by the
Church. Eileen Power, a medievalist, states that "The ideas about women were formed on the one hand by the clergy order...while strictly subordinating
them to the interests of its primary asset, the land." The Medieval Age's idea of a women's role was largely determined by males, specifically that of the
Church. The Church's authority over women restricted them from their inborn rights of freedom and equality. Chaucer, a firm believer against this
inequality, utilizes the Wife of Bath's prologue and tale to suggest that true happiness can only be achieved when male sovereignty over women is
relinquished. The Wife of Bath begins her prologue by stating, "If there were no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As men stated authority over women in the Middle Ages, the Wife of Bath's associates men with authoritative power, and women with experience. She
denounces all authority, a radical statement especially in a time where the Church and men (the majority of her audience) were dominant in society,
and states that experience should overpower authority. The Wife of Bath continues to denounce the belief that men should be authoritative over
women by countering Church beliefs with her own experience. She says that someone once scolded her of her lifestyle with the proof that Christ
only graced one wedding ceremony, a sign that the Bible clearly states that men and women should only marry once. She refutes this Biblical
teaching with her own life experience stating that "wedding's no sin, so far as I can learn" (Chaucer 260). She specifically uses the word learn to
emphasize the fact that she acquired this knowledge through her own experience. Chaucer depicts the Wife of Bath as an

Statement Of Interest In Architecture
My interest in architecture grew due to a number of reasons. Apart from the fact that studying architecture meant getting a chance to explore new
places and sites, it is also the only profession where I could have something that I've designed, realized in real life. Growing up in a culturally rich and
diverse country like India, I've always been fascinated by how every city has it's own unique characteristics. With further research, I realized
architecture is not only about designing and construction, but more about the manifestation and expression of the cultural needs and values of the
society. It is the most important evidence of our past and helps us to interpret and study the evolution of human settlements based on culture and

The Morality In Thomas Stockman's Enemy Of The People
Within the play, Enemy of the People a battle is taking place between the morality of Peter and his brother Thomas Stockmann. The conflict that arises
between them is the choice of which is best for the town and its people. Thomas Stockmann wants to shut down and fix the tannery and the local hot

of fixing the hot springs and that the water is poisoning the people that use the water. By trying to protect the people of his hometown from getting sick
and dying made it clear that Thomas Stockmann is right. During this period in Norway, industries were rising and it could be very difficult to fix

The Impact Of Advantages On Female Aging
For many women, a new study gives them a challenge that would test their character as a person and as a female. It is because the research gave them
two tempting choices in life that either way can make them happy in different ways.
The study by Bath University researchers discussed the impact of childbearing on female aging. It said that pregnancy, breastfeeding, and childcare
take a toll on the body. For every child that a woman bears, it increases the oxidative stress in her body. It is a kind of chemical imbalance that can
cause premature aging.
Younger–looking or more visitors?
Given the findings, the study suggested that if women will have only one or two children in their lifetime, they may look younger and prettier.
However, the trade–off is that a woman who has more children, when she reaches middle age – even though she may own a saggier face – would have
a larger family and more people who would visit her, The Sun reported.
For the research, 500 people were asked to judge the photographs of women in their middle age. The authors, from the Jagiellonian University in
Poland, discovered that women who are post–menopausal and had fewer children were considered by men and women as more attractive, younger, and
healthier than the women who had more children.
Dr. Anthony Little, one of the authors of the study from the University of Bath, explained that becoming pregnant, breastfeeding, and taking care of
kids need a high expenditure of energy and higher nutrient

Traditional Dating Vs Online Dating
During this research project, while interviewing people and reading articles people have found love by using online dating, their experiences seem to

Rigsby points out "She is thus presented as a perceptive critic of misogynist orthodoxy who beats male scholars at their own game and creates her

which emphasizes that Alisoun is able to outsmart even male scholars and show her dominance against males; therefore this gives substantial
evidence that she transcends patriarchy. The Wife also states "Such was the way, my lords, you understand I kept my older husbands well in
hand." (Chaucer 268). She explains that she is superior to her husbands as she is able to keep her husbands "well in hand." Her control on her
husband furthers the point that Alisoun is superior to the males. Even her 5th husband, she ends up convincing him to give full submission, "Do as
you please for all the rest of life" (Chaucer 280). She shows that she is able to become superior to the point where she has full control of her
husband, whether or not she exercises her power is a different story, but ultimately she shows her superiority against these males. Also, she states, "I
managed them so well by my technique Each was delighted to go out and seek And buy some pretty thing for me to wear" (Chaucer 282). This line
shows her technique to manipulate males. She knows how a male acts and is able to become superior to them by manipulating how these males tend to

the same by all Romans. Many Romans thought their time was best spent in providing for the community, as a solider or working for the Senate , or
in some other type of public service. By upper class

Desire of the Fourteenth Century Women
Desire of the Fourteenth Century Women
Is not what we desire, the most hard to get? It has always been this way. Unfortunately, women's rights and abilities have been underestimated over the
centuries. In the fourteenth century, the status and condition of a European woman depended on her husband's position. Women had to endure
arranged marriages, abuse and male dominance. During that time, Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales and taught us about one extraordinary
woman whose name is Dame Alisoun. Alisoun is called The Wife of Bath, and she defines what women desired most in fourteenth–century England.
She believes that women wish for power over their husbands, and I personally agree with her opinion. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As help me God, whan that I saw him go. After the beere, me thoughte he hadde a paire of legges and of feet so clene and faire. That al myn herte I
yaf unto his hold" (line 601). Alisoun learns quicky about men's weak sides and chooses her tactics depending on the situation. In her "Prologue", the
Wife of Bath points out that there are no women writers and that only men write. Everything described in Janekin's book is written from the men's
point of view, and here Alisoun uses a painting as an analogy: "Who painted the leon, tel me who? By God, if wommen hadden writen stories, As
clerkes han wihin hir oratories, They wolde han writen of men more wikkednesse, Than al the merk of Adam may redresse (line 695). If women got a
chance to write, they would write good things about themselves. The Wife of Bath explains that actually women are unable to present theirs ideas
because in the fourteenth century, women were not necessarily literate. Alisoun probably cannot read herself. Only men can write about women, and
Alisoun does not agree with what they say.
The Wife of Bath breaks the rule and norms for the fourteenth–century woman. She mentions God often, and she explains that true nobility comes from
him: "For gentilesse cometh fro God allone" (line 1168). Here she mentions that class or social status does not matter, and that true nobility comes from
God. Even though Alisoun has an

Stockman Moral Relativism
What are the implications of Dr. Stockman's actions for the issue of moral relativism?
Moral relativism is the belief that moral principles depends on cultural acceptance, or a subjective point of view. We get to see how subjective it can
be reading Henrik Ibsen's play, The Enemy of the People (Pojman 166). The play is about a doctor (Stockman) in a Norwegian town, who learns that
the water used in the towns baths is contaminated. Dr. Stockman feels morally obligated to inform people of his findings. His brother Peter, is the
town's mayor. Peter does not think the people need to know about the water and warns his brother to keep silent. Dr. Stockman rejects his brother's
warnings. Doing so, results in the doctor becoming an outcast. I can imagine the dilemma that the doctor faced. He is aware of the revenue that the
baths generate for his hometown. Yet, he is also ethically responsible as a doctor to notify citizen about the harm that the baths will cause. I was
surprised at the people's response to the doctor. He tells them the truth, but they reject it. Their actions highlight some issues of moral relativism.
The two brothers are examples of how personal opinions and self–interest determine our moral outlook. Stockman is looking at his moral obligation
from a doctor point of view. He is concerned with public health. Peter is looking from a mayor point of view. He is concerned about the towns
economy and his reputation. The brothers meet to discuss the problem. Peter

Elizabeth Garrett Anderson: The Most Influential Woman
In order for the world to change, there needs to be brave people that make the change happen. Thanks to hundreds of influential men and women we
have improved our world.. They only needed to believe in themselves and in this world's potential in order to fight for their cause. In this men's world,
influential women have worked twice as hard due to their impressive determination to make a change. One of the many wonderful influential women
is Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. She was born in 1836 in London being the second of twelve children. As a child she was already interested in helping
women have a bigger role in society. Anderson's applications to medical schools were turned down. However, with her father's support and her own

Sexual Relations in Wife of Bath Essay
Sexual Relations in Wife of Bath Sexual relations between men and woman have created issues of life and death from the beginning of time. In
most classic Western beliefs it began when Eve with the help of the Devil seduced Adam thus leading the downfall of humanity into an abyss of sin
and hopelessness. This issue arises in all literature from Genesis, Chaucer and into modern day. Authors, clerks and writers of all types have aided
stereotyping women throughout history and Geoffrey Chaucer is not an exception in most cases. However, in Chaucer's Wife of Bath we can find the
beginnings of a new type of woman arising from the dark ages of the post–Roman era. And of course at the center of his character's struggle is sex. As

Menstruation, seen as the equal of male ejaculation provided periodic relief" (Gies). In one case a woman brought a man before the courts on rape
charges. She conceived during the intercourse, therefor the jury acquitted the man because it ruled she must have enjoyed the sex because she
conceived, which was a popular belief during the Middle Ages (Gies). These beliefs no doubt were ridiculous attempts to discredit women so the power
of men could be upheld throughout the nations, in this case Great Britain.
Sexual power and women
"Like the Devil, women were perceived as masking their pernicious in attractive guises, and it was part of the exemplum's purpose to unveil their
subtleties and sorceress in order to underscore the need for vigilance against them" (Gregg 85).
"Women and Jews together came to be viewed not just as the spiritual inferiors of the Christian male, but more specifically and perniciously, as the
embodiments of carnality and sexual peril, with all that implied for the damnation of one's eternal soul" (Gregg 85).
So does the Wife if Bath become a model of feminine virtue? She states that many Biblical characters had many wives, like Abraham and Solomon,
so if she was were not to marry she could not control her lusts. (Chaucer 278). Is it better to make her a model of attainable perfection than to make
her a model of unattainable perfection (Gregg 85).

Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales
The Canterbury Tales serves as a moral manual in the Middle Ages. In the tales, Geoffrey Chaucer portrays the problems of the society. For
instance, Chaucer uses the monk and the friar in comparison to the parson to show what the ecclesiastical class are doing versus what they are
supposed to be doing. In other words, it is to make people be aware of these problems. It can be inferred that the author's main goal is for this literary
work to serve as a message to the people along with changing the society in relation to these problems. The author mentions several issues of the society
including how women are treated. Pertaining to women's role in the society, the Middle Ages was also considered a patriarchal society which is why in

In other words, women in the Middle Ages wanted independence. In the end, John ends up as a cuckold, and this is Chaucer's representation of the
punishment and consequences of taking away a woman's rights.
Allison is in the tale itself, but Chaucer also mentions two women in the pilgrims. One of these women is the Prioress or the Nun. The Prioress is
described as a woman who was "modest...and coy", but despite that, Chaucer uses satire in her description in the prologue. The Prioress is a woman
with sophistication who "spoke her French...fluently" who also had table manners with "never a driblet fell upon her breast" (Chaucer 4–5). Along
with those characteristics, she is also "charitable and piteous" caring for mouse that is caught in a trap, and she feeds dogs too (Chaucer 5). The
Prioress can be analyzed in two ways: one with the society's perception of women and one as an issue of the church class. In the society's viewpoint,
she can be seen as a woman who cared for things that are not worth caring about. This is also another example of Chaucer's use of his literary work to
show the issues of society pertaining women. The Prioress might be high in society who went to a school in "Stratford–at–the–Bow", but she is also a
woman affected by the gender stereotypes of the Middle Ages (Chaucer 5).
Besides the Prioress, another woman that is also in the pilgrim is the Wife of Bath.

Throughout history art has been used to document the occurrences of the time period in which it was created. One may believe that art is nothing
more than a painting or drawing; however, art has a much more complex definition as it is never–ending. Art embraces a much wider scope; after all,
art can be anything from visual arts (i.e. painting or drawing), photography, sculpture, literature, musical, architecture, etc. Art has the ability to take us
one step closer to understanding the people of the past. With the outstanding creations that humans were capable of bringing to life, we are able to
better hint at the sense of what was important. Essentially, art is transcending and everlasting – forever creating an imprint, allowing all those who...

Bath, Michigan is a small town approximately fifteen minutes northeast of Lansing, the state capital, and is the only place outside of Ann Arbor I call

The umbilical cord is an essential lifeline between the mother and fetus. The cord contains two arteries and a vein, is connected to the placenta and
provides oxygen and nutrient–rich blood to the fetus in–utero. Though parents are informed during discharge on how to perform dry care for the
umbilical cord until it falls off approximately within one to two weeks, care for the cord begins in the hospital setting following the delivery. The main
implication for umbilical cord care is to prevent infectious conditions of the cord such as: omphalitis which is clinically manifested as inflammation

In the third edition of the guideline, AWHONN discourages the routine use of isopropyl alcohol, topical antimicrobial/antibacterial agents and triple
dye for umbilical cord care. The new recommendation for treating the umbilical cord is natural drying, which involves "keeping the cord area clean
and dry, without the routine application of topical agents." (AWHONN, 2013, p. 31) Studies have shown a statistically significant difference in the
amount of time that it would take for the cord to separate, with natural drying taking a short time than the use of antiseptics thus leading to a
decreased chance of opportunistic infections within the time difference of 8.1 days vs 9.6 days. (AWHONN, 2013, p. 31). Though the natural drying
intervention has its disadvantages such as an increased amount of exudate, odor and had a higher colonization rate with microorganisms, a study
conducted by Janssen, Selwood, Dobson, Peacock, & Thiessen in 2003 found there was no link to the intervention causing an increase of infections
due to these disadvantages. (as cited by AWHONN, 2013, p. 31) The association is the forerunner as a primary or secondary reference for textbooks

The Physics Of The Periodic Table
Group 14 of the periodic table contains a mixture of non–metals (carbon and silicon), a metalloid (germanium), and two metals ( tin and lead). Tin is
able to form dihalides and tetrahalides such as SnI2 and SnI4. However, lead will not form tetrahalides as readily as tin3. The tetrahalides of lead will
decompose into dihalides due to their instability 3. The stability of the compounds is based on their respective oxidation states. Periodic trends suggest
that group 14 oxidation states are normally – 4 as it is increasingly energetically favorable for them to accept electrons in order to complete their
valence shells 3. However, due to the metallic properties of tin and lead, they generally lose electrons and therefore have a positive oxidation state. It is
a characteristic trend to see heavier elements of the p block forming compounds in which their oxidation number is 2 (less than the group number 3 ).
The heavier the atom, the more stable it is in the lower oxidation state. This is due to the inert pair effect 3. This can be correlated to the amount of
energy needed to remove an electron (ionization energy), since in the higher oxidation state the p–block electrons and the s–block electrons are
removed, while in the lower oxidation state, it is only the p–electrons that are removed and thus, the overall ionization energy is lower. The general
periodic trend is that the ionization energy is generally lower for heavy metals, which results in the lower oxidation state being

The Wife of Bath
Historical Background One of the most memorable pilgrims of The Canterbury Tales, as well as one of the most memorable women in literature, is
the Wife of Bath. She is a "lusty and domineering" woman who is proud of and outspoken about her sexuality and believes that a woman should have
sovereignty in a marriage (Norton 80). She is also extremely blunt and outspoken about her ideas and beliefs. Despite being a woman of the fourteenth

In the Middle Ages there was a little improvement in women's rights compared to the Anglo–Saxon period, but things were still far from perfect. Before
marriage a woman was totally dependent on her father, who was the head of the house. She, therefore, did not have the choice to make her own
decisions; her father made all decisions for her. All her possessions were her father's property. Most women in this period did not get a formal
education. However, girls could go to convent schools, but not to a university. Only wealthy men of high status were able to get a university
education. However, women had a good understanding of literature and would often read to their children. Although the Wife of Bath has not had any
formal education, she seems to have good knowledge of the Bible (though she misquotes more often than not). Before marriage, the girl was supposed
to help with the family business and help her mother with the housework. If the father died, the eldest son became the head of the house. It was his
responsibility to take care of and protect the family. Therefore, in the house, boys were favored and given preference over girls.
In the Middle Ages marriages were often arranged according to wealth and social status. Girls were often married at a young age and to much older
men. In the King Arthur legends, King Arthur

Sexual Fluidity in Ancient Greece
Females in Ancient Greece

Understanding Female Homoeroticism
To understand the full dynamic of female sexual encounters in Greece we must try to understand the culture dynamics at the time and attempt to piece
together relative data. One of the largest debates against homoeroticism among women in ancient Greece is the lack of paintings and pots depicting
women involved in explicit sexual acts such as the ones that are depicted among me in red and black figure pottery. Well, Nancy Sorkin Rabinowitz
and Lisa Auanger bring up countless alluring points and raise simultaneous questions in their book, Among Women: From the Homosocial to the
Homoerotic in the Ancient World, one of which is how would female homoeroticism look if it is depicted on Ancient Greek pottery? The point of this
question being that we do not know if the lesbianism in ancient Greece was defined along the same lines as it is in modern–day (Rabinowitz and
Auanger, 111–112). Dictionary.com defines lesbianism as "homosexual relations between women." So is lesbianism defined by the sexual activity or
does it move beyond the physical and into a mental, more emotional realm? That brings us again back to the question of, "What did this homoeroticism
among women look like in ancient Greece?"
Ancient times have a lost list of feminine roles and conduct to fit those roles. Ancient Greece was known as a patriarchal society in which women had
little rights personally and legally. Women were subject to acts of seclusion as they needed

Each person is represented to fit a unique type of behavior as shown by

women could either choose to marry and become a childbearing wife or go

shoes, broad hat, and spurs on her feet. She is obviously not dressed in a
typical manner or style of other women in her time (Hallissy 42).
She disapproved of her husbands attempts to inflict control upon

Team Enzyme Experiment
Team enzyme project report
Introduction
Enzymes are proteins that acts as biological catalysts, helping to catalyze chemical reactions. This is means that an alternative reaction pathway of
lower activation energy is provided during the speed up reaction. Most enzymes are proteins and hence have a three–dimensional structure of folded
polypeptide chains. Most enzymes have an optimal temperature and pH range in which they function most effectively. If changes occur that remove the
enzyme out of this range, it may not function effectively. This principle forms the basis of this experimental design where the increasing temperature
results in the denaturing of the enzymes found in bromelain and thus lowering its catalytic effectiveness. Bromelain ... Show more content on

Guinea Pig Ileum Experiment Determines Effects of Agonists and Antagonists

  • 1. Guinea Pig Ileum Experiment determine their method of action and how they relate to the size of response created (Michelson 2007). Eserine should not act as a antagonist, but instead increase the size of response created by other agonists. Method Materials The test compound and agonist substances acetylcholine, carbachol, methacholine and histamine were obtained with enough volume to complete the experiment. A fresh guinea pig ilium obtained through a freshly killed guinea pig. An organ bath is needed with an attached water jacket and aerator to circulate the water. Sufficient amount of water is needed to circulate within the organ bath to keep it at a constant 37 в„ѓ. Tyrode's solution is required to immerse the tissue in. An isotonic lever attached to a transducer, which in turn connects to a chart recorder to measure the contractions of the guinea pig ilium is also needed for the experiment. Lastly, a cotton string to hold the suspended tissue is required. Experimental setup... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (note. Use of fresh guinea pig ileum maximises accuracy of experiment. Tyrode's solution is used due to its isotonic properties and control purposes as mentioned in Jiang (1992)). The tissue of the guinea pig ilium is suspended in an organ bath (note. Organ bath is kept at a constant 37 в„ѓ with the use of a water jacket), where the bottom part of the tissue is locked in place and the top end of the tissue is attached to a isotonic lever. This isotonic lever is connected to a transducer. (note. The transducer is used to convert contractions of the tissue to electrical signals that are sent to a chart to be measured). To obtain results, agonists are added to the organ bath to create intestinal contractility (University of Western Sydney 2015). • 3. Eczema Case Studies Eczema is the familial term used in reference to atopic dermatitis, a common skin condition characterized by chronic inflammation. It causes erythema, scaling, itching, crusting and oozing of the skin. The exact etiology of this condition remains unknown although it is suspected that genetic factors as well as environmental factors might play a role in the development of atopic dermatitis in an individual[1]. In 2009, Haslund and colleagues conducted a study to evaluate the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus in patients with hand eczema compared to controls. Results showed that the bacterium was found in 48% of patients with hand eczema, which was significantly higher than the 8% of controls[2]. Also, through cultures obtained from the skin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Indeed, immunologic differences were observed between the skins of healthy individuals and atopic individuals. The indications were that an immunologic dysregulation might be an important factor contributing to the etiology of atopic dermatitis. In this case, an immunomodulatory agent, i.e, corticosteroids, should also be considered in the treatment of eczema to address this possible issue, as well as considered for long–term treatment of the condition[16]. Furthermore, a genetically defective skin barrier function is a predisposing factor to atopic dermatitis that cannot be ignored. It was observed that 15% of atopic individuals have a defective filaggrin gene, a crucial component in epidermal homeostasis. In these cases, bleach baths wouldn't be beneficial, as they would not be treating the underlying problem[17]. Further, while the studies on bleach baths have shown encouraging results, one must nonetheless take into account that the worldwide use of sodium hypochlorite might have possible side effects. More importantly, as mentioned earlier, if the sodium hypochlorite solution isn't capable of eradicating the bacteria completely, does this treatment ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Orientalism in Art Essay "What was the process of 'Orientalising' according to Edward Said? Discuss the notion of 'Otherness' from both a European and 'Eastern' point of view using three examples of work for visual analysis." The Near East or the Orient was a "place of Europe's greatest and richest and oldest colonies, the source of its civilizations and languages its cultural contestant, and one of its deepest and most recurring images of the Other."[1] Edward Said describes the Orient as not an inert fact of nature but both Orient and Occident as man made.[2] The argument Said presents is that the Orient is an "idea that has a history and a tradition of thought, imagery, and vocabulary that have given it reality and presence in and for the West."[3]... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The exotic and romanticised perception of the East can be seen in the painting of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres titled "Le Bain turc." (Turkish Bath) The painting was an eroticised fantasy of how the artist perceived women of the Orient. The women's body were drawn with some exaggeration to fit into these notions of Orientalism as sensuality was seen as acceptable to the exotic Orient. In line with Said's argument of how the Orient was often drawn based on the imagination of the artist, Rome was the furthest limit of Ingres's actual travel which would mean that he had never encountered the Orient before.[14] The work was inspired by the letters sent by Lady Montague who recounted her visit in the women's bath in Istanbul. Taking this inspiration, Ingres paints dozens of nude Turkish women sitting or lying on sofas with exaggerated poses, chatting, dancing and singing. Nudity of the kind seen in the Parisian Salons would have been unacceptable in Victorian London however by the title and the subject matter being the Eastern world; it was allowed public access in the 1900s. A question arises whether if the title had not been "Turkish Bath" but rather "Paris Brothel" would the public approbation have been the same? The death of Sardanapalus by Delacroix is also a classic example of the characterization of the Orient. The work was inspired by a play in Byron and it portrays the eastern ruler's brutal control over the destiny of the people. However Sardanapalus is a work of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This Is What Happens To Your Brain On Sugar Essay Title: THIS Is What Happens To Your Brain On Sugar Category: Health Tags: Alzheimer's disease, too much sugar, sugar addict, sugar brain Teaser: Too much sugar in your diet can damage a protein that is essential in fighting Alzheimer's disease, in its early stages. Article: It's no secret; sugar, when consumed in excess leads you down the road to obesity and diabetes. Still, sugar–loaded foods and beverages have become a way of life for many Americans. So much so, that the average person consumes about 20 teaspoons of sugar a day! That's about 14 teaspoons or 60 grams more than is recommended for a healthy diet. All that sugar not only makes you fat, but now experts agree it may also lead to Alzheimer's. Here's what happens to your brain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This figure is thought to rise to over 125 million by 2050. This amounts to hundreds of billions of dollars spent on medical and social care because of the cognitive effects of the disease. Dr. Omar Kassaar, also from the University of Bath, further added that "excess sugar is well known to be bad for us when it comes to diabetes and obesity, but this potential link with Alzheimer's disease is yet another reason that we should be controlling our sugar intake in our diets." Why we crave the white stuff Your brain has built–in evolutionary mechanisms that drive your cravings. Many of these mechanisms are meant for survival, one of the which is eating. And of course, the release of hormones is also involved according to Tufts. When you eat something sweet and delicious, the good feeling of the experience is determined in part by hormone receptors. Over time, these receptors become less sensitive to the hormones produced when we enjoy a particular food – like chocolate cake. So, you'll need to consume more and more chocolate cake to have the same pleasant experience. We're addicted and we may not know it! But it's not just the obvious treats like sugary soda, candy, cookies and cakes that turn us into sugar addicts. Today's modern diet is so loaded with hidden sugars and sweeteners that we ... • 7. Women in Anglo-Saxon England Essay Women in Anglo–Saxon England Anglo–Saxon literature was based on Germanic myths about battles, heroes, diseases, dragons and religion. Writers did not pay much attention to female issues, and there are only few poems that talk about them. Beowulf and ""The Wife's Lament"" are two examples that briefly consider women's lives in that time. Anglo–Saxon history and poetry portray women's lives as uneasy and dependent on their husbands' positions. Women had to endure arranged marriages, abuse and male dominance. Marriage meant very much to women particularly for their status and economic security. In the medieval era, people wed within their class and only a slave could sometimes find his match ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Slavery was common in medieval England. Slave–women were treated with much less respect than the free ones, and their wergild was smaller: "If a man raped a virgin who was the king's property, he had to pay fifty shillings to the king, while if she were a grinding–slave it would be twenty–five shillings. And at last if the girl were a third class (no one knows what that meant) it would be only twelve shillings" (Fell 107). This system was very easy on rich men. They were untouchable as long as they had the money to pay wergild. Ironically, abuse was accepted, and the king became richer from it. GRAPH On the other hand, in the kingdom the king respected his queen and she played an important role. In the poem Beowulf, Wealhtheow is a Danish queen and Hrothgar's wife. She is mentioned as Hrothgar's lover and sexual partner: "The lord of the Shieldings, their shelter in war, left the mead–hall to lie with Wealhtheow, his queen and bedmate"(46). In the hall, Wealhtheow serves alcoholic drinks to all the guests (only women were allowed to serve alcohol). She is a cup–bearer during the celebration: "So the Helming woman went on her rounds, queenly and dignified, decked out in rings, offering the goblet to all ranks" (45). • 9. Argumentative Essay On The Wife Of Bath Suzanna Sim Quinn AP Language Period 3 3 December 2014 Wife of Bath: Lack of Experience is the Key to Happiness The Middle Ages, a time of strict societal rules and hierarchy, was dominated by the Church. Eileen Power, a medievalist, states that "The ideas about women were formed on the one hand by the clergy order...while strictly subordinating them to the interests of its primary asset, the land." The Medieval Age's idea of a women's role was largely determined by males, specifically that of the Church. The Church's authority over women restricted them from their inborn rights of freedom and equality. Chaucer, a firm believer against this inequality, utilizes the Wife of Bath's prologue and tale to suggest that true happiness can only be achieved when male sovereignty over women is relinquished. The Wife of Bath begins her prologue by stating, "If there were no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As men stated authority over women in the Middle Ages, the Wife of Bath's associates men with authoritative power, and women with experience. She denounces all authority, a radical statement especially in a time where the Church and men (the majority of her audience) were dominant in society, and states that experience should overpower authority. The Wife of Bath continues to denounce the belief that men should be authoritative over women by countering Church beliefs with her own experience. She says that someone once scolded her of her lifestyle with the proof that Christ only graced one wedding ceremony, a sign that the Bible clearly states that men and women should only marry once. She refutes this Biblical teaching with her own life experience stating that "wedding's no sin, so far as I can learn" (Chaucer 260). She specifically uses the word learn to emphasize the fact that she acquired this knowledge through her own experience. Chaucer depicts the Wife of Bath as an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Impact Of Advantages On Female Aging For many women, a new study gives them a challenge that would test their character as a person and as a female. It is because the research gave them two tempting choices in life that either way can make them happy in different ways. The study by Bath University researchers discussed the impact of childbearing on female aging. It said that pregnancy, breastfeeding, and childcare take a toll on the body. For every child that a woman bears, it increases the oxidative stress in her body. It is a kind of chemical imbalance that can cause premature aging. Younger–looking or more visitors? Given the findings, the study suggested that if women will have only one or two children in their lifetime, they may look younger and prettier. However, the trade–off is that a woman who has more children, when she reaches middle age – even though she may own a saggier face – would have a larger family and more people who would visit her, The Sun reported. For the research, 500 people were asked to judge the photographs of women in their middle age. The authors, from the Jagiellonian University in Poland, discovered that women who are post–menopausal and had fewer children were considered by men and women as more attractive, younger, and healthier than the women who had more children. Dr. Anthony Little, one of the authors of the study from the University of Bath, explained that becoming pregnant, breastfeeding, and taking care of kids need a high expenditure of energy and higher nutrient ... Moral relativism is the belief that moral principles depends on cultural acceptance, or a subjective point of view. We get to see how subjective it can be reading Henrik Ibsen's play, The Enemy of the People (Pojman 166). The play is about a doctor (Stockman) in a Norwegian town, who learns that the water used in the towns baths is contaminated. Dr. Stockman feels morally obligated to inform people of his findings. His brother Peter, is the town's mayor. Peter does not think the people need to know about the water and warns his brother to keep silent. Dr. Stockman rejects his brother's warnings. Doing so, results in the doctor becoming an outcast. I can imagine the dilemma that the doctor faced. He is aware of the revenue that the baths generate for his hometown. Yet, he is also ethically responsible as a doctor to notify citizen about the harm that the baths will cause. I was surprised at the people's response to the doctor. He tells them the truth, but they reject it. Their actions highlight some issues of moral relativism. The two brothers are examples of how personal opinions and self–interest determine our moral outlook. Stockman is looking at his moral obligation from a doctor point of view. Authors, clerks and writers of all types have aided stereotyping women throughout history and Geoffrey Chaucer is not an exception in most cases. These beliefs no doubt were ridiculous attempts to discredit women so the power of men could be upheld throughout the nations, in this case Great Britain. Sexual power and women "Like the Devil, women were perceived as masking their pernicious in attractive guises, and it was part of the exemplum's purpose to unveil their subtleties and sorceress in order to underscore the need for vigilance against them" (Gregg 85). To compensate for such needs, the Romans built the Baths – constructed with a unique architectural element "mark[ing] the culmination in the development of the double–circulation type of baths" (Sear). With the increased practice of bathing at least once a day, bathing became an important practice of all Romans. Of all the baths built in Rome, the Bath of Caracalla is amidst the best preserved. The Bath of Caracalla is rectangular in structure (225 meters by 115 meters) and "has a perfect bilateral symmetry along its north–south axis" (kfupm.edu). Similar to that of the Pantheon, the Bath of Caracalla is structured with use of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. The Mass Murder At The Bath School Disaster Essay Eighty–nine years after the Bath School Disaster, the deadliest mass murder at a school in United States history (Dozier), it remains one of the most significant and defining events in my hometown's history. The great significance of the {impacts of the} disaster is obvious when taking a walk through the memorial park, when time is spent in the Bath School Museum browsing through town artifacts, and especially when walking the halls of any Bath Community School on May 18th, the disaster's anniversary. Bath, Michigan is a small town approximately fifteen minutes northeast of Lansing, the state capital, and is the only place outside of Ann Arbor I call home. On the surface, Bath is a typical small town where nearly every resident is a familiar face and most classmates are together from pre–school to twelfth grade. {However, looking into Bath's history reveals a much richer past than one might expect from a town of its size.} *Combine and make better – Bath = normal boring history with a few colorful/ interesting points*{In addition to the usual agriculture–centered history typical of towns in the area, Bath holds several interesting chapters in its history books.} These interesting chapters include unique traditions such as the annual Bath Tub Races (which is exactly what it sounds like), but the most unique, if not defining, chapter is that of the Bath School Disaster. • 28. Patricia Era Bath Research Paper Patricia Era Bath, one of the most amazing inventors, doctors, and educators of our time, was born on November 4, 1972 in Harlem, New York. Gladys Bath, her mother, worked as a housewife and a domestic worker, saving her salary for her children's education. Her father, Rupert Bather set the family tone for firsts. He was the first black motorman for the subway system in New York City. Patricia was encouraged to pursue academic interests and exposed to the value of exploring different cultures. Her interest in science and medicine was first sparked when her mother bought her first chemistry set. Bath worked tirelessly for many years to become as educated as possible, and she succeeded. She was one of very few students in attendance at a National Science Foundation sponsored cancer research workshop at the young age of only 16. Dr. Robert Bernard, the head of the program, thought her work was so remarkable that he incorporated her discoveries in a scientific report at a conference. Columbia University was lucky enough to have Bath pursue a fellowship in ophthalmology in 1969. Her many discoveries were shocking. Bath found that African Americans twice as likely to go blind and eight times more likely to suffer from glaucoma than any other race or test subject. Due to the results of her research, she got a community ophthalmology system developed to increase the level of eye care given to those who couldn't afford treatment. Patricia Bath became the first African American to ever complete an ophthalmology residency in 1973. The next year, she moved to California to work at Charles R. • 29. The Umbilical Cord Is An Essential Lifeline Between The... The umbilical cord is an essential lifeline between the mother and fetus. The cord contains two arteries and a vein, is connected to the placenta and provides oxygen and nutrient–rich blood to the fetus in–utero. Though parents are informed during discharge on how to perform dry care for the umbilical cord until it falls off approximately within one to two weeks, care for the cord begins in the hospital setting following the delivery. The main implication for umbilical cord care is to prevent infectious conditions of the cord such as: omphalitis which is clinically manifested as inflammation with fever and drainage from the umbilical stump. This infection can turn deadly and lead to sepsis. Traditionally, a number of antiseptic and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the third edition of the guideline, AWHONN discourages the routine use of isopropyl alcohol, topical antimicrobial/antibacterial agents and triple dye for umbilical cord care. The new recommendation for treating the umbilical cord is natural drying, which involves "keeping the cord area clean and dry, without the routine application of topical agents." (AWHONN, 2013, p. 31) Studies have shown a statistically significant difference in the amount of time that it would take for the cord to separate, with natural drying taking a short time than the use of antiseptics thus leading to a decreased chance of opportunistic infections within the time difference of 8.1 days vs 9.6 days. (AWHONN, 2013, p. 31). Though the natural drying intervention has its disadvantages such as an increased amount of exudate, odor and had a higher colonization rate with microorganisms, a study conducted by Janssen, Selwood, Dobson, Peacock, & Thiessen in 2003 found there was no link to the intervention causing an increase of infections due to these disadvantages. (as cited by AWHONN, 2013, p. 31) The association is the forerunner as a primary or secondary reference for textbooks and hospital policies due to their reputable sources and evidence based practice. In order to experience the treatment of umbilical cord postnatally we observed nurses at Saint Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick as they followed the hospital policy and implement the recommended intervention. • 30. The Physics Of The Periodic Table Group 14 of the periodic table contains a mixture of non–metals (carbon and silicon), a metalloid (germanium), and two metals ( tin and lead). Tin is able to form dihalides and tetrahalides such as SnI2 and SnI4. However, lead will not form tetrahalides as readily as tin3. The tetrahalides of lead will decompose into dihalides due to their instability 3. The stability of the compounds is based on their respective oxidation states. Periodic trends suggest that group 14 oxidation states are normally – 4 as it is increasingly energetically favorable for them to accept electrons in order to complete their valence shells 3. However, due to the metallic properties of tin and lead, they generally lose electrons and therefore have a positive oxidation state. It is a characteristic trend to see heavier elements of the p block forming compounds in which their oxidation number is 2 (less than the group number 3 ). The heavier the atom, the more stable it is in the lower oxidation state. This is due to the inert pair effect 3. This can be correlated to the amount of energy needed to remove an electron (ionization energy), since in the higher oxidation state the p–block electrons and the s–block electrons are removed, while in the lower oxidation state, it is only the p–electrons that are removed and thus, the overall ionization energy is lower. The general periodic trend is that the ionization energy is generally lower for heavy metals, which results in the lower oxidation state being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Essay on The Wife of Bath The Wife of Bath Historical Background One of the most memorable pilgrims of The Canterbury Tales, as well as one of the most memorable women in literature, is the Wife of Bath. She is a "lusty and domineering" woman who is proud of and outspoken about her sexuality and believes that a woman should have sovereignty in a marriage (Norton 80). She is also extremely blunt and outspoken about her ideas and beliefs. Despite being a woman of the fourteenth century, her ideas, beliefs, and behavior are more like those of the twentieth century. For these reasons, she seems true to life even today. However, her ideas, beliefs, and behavior are not at all representative of the women of her time. Women in theMiddle Ages had more freedom ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the Middle Ages there was a little improvement in women's rights compared to the Anglo–Saxon period, but things were still far from perfect. Before marriage a woman was totally dependent on her father, who was the head of the house. She, therefore, did not have the choice to make her own decisions; her father made all decisions for her. All her possessions were her father's property. Most women in this period did not get a formal education. However, girls could go to convent schools, but not to a university. Only wealthy men of high status were able to get a university education. However, women had a good understanding of literature and would often read to their children. Although the Wife of Bath has not had any formal education, she seems to have good knowledge of the Bible (though she misquotes more often than not). Before marriage, the girl was supposed to help with the family business and help her mother with the housework. If the father died, the eldest son became the head of the house. It was his responsibility to take care of and protect the family. Therefore, in the house, boys were favored and given preference over girls. In the Middle Ages marriages were often arranged according to wealth and social status. Girls were often married at a young age and to much older men. In the King Arthur legends, King Arthur ... That is, it is a common feature among men in ancient Greece. So there stands the question of what were the actions of women when their men were away seeking out young men and boys in bath houses or actually committing these homosexual activities? A look into this takes the use of Feminist Anthropology, which strives to understand the female position and power in society, in conjunction with archaeology and the synchronistic approach to truly understand the full dynamic of homosexuality in Greece (Walter, "Feminist Anthropology?"). Understanding Female Homoeroticism To understand the full dynamic of female sexual encounters in Greece we must try to understand the culture dynamics at the time and attempt to piece together relative data. One of the largest debates against homoeroticism among women in ancient Greece is the lack of paintings and pots depicting women involved in explicit sexual acts such as the ones that are depicted among me in red and black figure pottery. Well, Nancy Sorkin Rabinowitz and Lisa Auanger bring up countless alluring points and raise simultaneous questions in their book, Among Women: From the Homosocial to the Homoerotic in the Ancient World, one of which is how would female homoeroticism look if it is depicted on Ancient Greek pottery? The point of this question being that we do not know if the lesbianism in ancient Greece was defined along the same lines as it is in modern–day (Rabinowitz and Auanger, 111–112). Dictionary.com defines lesbianism as "homosexual relations between women." So is lesbianism defined by the sexual activity or does it move beyond the physical and into a mental, more emotional realm? That brings us again back to the question of, "What did this homoeroticism among women look like in ancient Greece?" Ancient times have a lost list of feminine roles and conduct to fit those roles. Ancient Greece was known as a patriarchal society in which women had little rights personally and legally. Women were subject to acts of seclusion as they needed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My attention was drawn to the Wife of Bath through which Chaucer notes the gender inequalities. Predominantly, women could either choose to marry and become a childbearing wife or go into a religious order. Women were seen as property. The Wife of Bath addressed and dispels the justification for multiple marriages through biblical figures and stories. "I woot wel Abraham was an holy man, And Jacob eek, as fer as evere I can, And eech of hem hadde wives mo than two, And many another holy man also" (p.118, ll. 61–64) The Wife of Bath relied on the bible to justify her unaccepted views, but when the bible did not favor her views she simply disregarded it. The Wife of Bath is a widow and therefore it is assumed that she would dress rather conservatively. This is not the case for the Wife of Bath. Her clothing is quite flamboyant with scarlet red leggings, soft new shoes, broad hat, and spurs on her feet. This is means that an alternative reaction pathway of lower activation energy is provided during the speed up reaction. Most enzymes are proteins and hence have a three–dimensional structure of folded polypeptide chains. Most enzymes have an optimal temperature and pH range in which they function most effectively. If changes occur that remove the enzyme out of this range, it may not function effectively. This principle forms the basis of this experimental design where the increasing temperature results in the denaturing of the enzymes found in bromelain and thus lowering its catalytic effectiveness.
