Examples Of Altrruism In A Streetcar Named Desire
I have always depended on the kindness of strangers – Blanche DuBois, A Streetcar Named Desire
Definition of Empathy and Altruism
Empathy derives from the German word Einfühlung, meaning to feel the suffering and troubles of
another from within (Clarke, 2014). The empathic concern that enlivens us to action and to alleviate
the perils, poverty or punishments borne by another. Humans devoid of empathy are bereft of
compassion and immune to the needs and welfare of another.
The renowned researcher Stephen Post defined altruism as "Unselfish delight in the wellbeing of
others and engagement in acts of care on their behalf". I would add that authentic altruistic
expression demands the wellbeing of another as paramount, often to the detriment ... Show more

Daniel Batson (1989) and his associates found out that regardless of anticipated mood enhancement,
high–empathy subjects helped more than low–empathy subjects. In other words, high–empathy
subjects would still helped more either under easy escape conditions or even when they could
probably get good mood to relieve from negative state without helping. Therefore, they concluded
that, obviously, something other than relieving negative state was motivating the helping behavior of
the high–empathy subjects in their studies. It contradicted with the theory proposed by Robert
Cialdini (1987) which supported that empathy–altruism hypothesis was actually the product of an
entirely egoistic desire for personal mood

Diabolical Characterization In The Open Boat
In the Open Boat by Stephen Crane, the correspondent's seems to show a change through his nature
of being a cynical man from the beginning of the story to the changed man he becomes toward the
end. I believe this change was caused by the brotherhood that was formed between the four men
along with the situation of them being lost at sea, which caused him to change and grow as a
character. I will support this claim with both textual evidence from the story and my own character
analysis of the character.
In the beginning of the Open Boat, the correspondent is portrayed as a hard–bitten character that has
seen it all, and believes that no joy can be found in the world. This is hinted in the brief introduction
of his character that Crane gives us, "The correspondent, pulling at the other oar, watched the waves
and wondered why he was there." (Crane 1048). We meet this character when he is rowing the boat,
something he complains about doing and is shown to detest. "The correspondent wondered
ingenuously how in the name of all that was sane could there be people who thought it amusing to
row a boat. It was not an amusement; it was a diabolical punishment" (Crane 1052). What the others
viewed as a small form of amusement, The correspondent made opposite opinion known when he
compared it to "diabolical punishment", however even though the correspondent has made his
hatred known for rowing. He is shown to be willing to do it to the point of exhaustion so he could
allow his fellow

Resilience In Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King
Resilliecne to events comes from expressing the emptyness and hopelessness that is felt by
individuals. Through empathizing, others are able to express the meaning of how one feels, it also
emphazises that individuals can find secuirty and safety in talking with others. Certain individuals
seep hope into others to boost their state of mind and to continue on their journey. Individudals may
also find themselves in situations of loss and dispair in which becomes burndens on ones shoulders.
At times bright figured individuals find ways to empathize with others to find contentment in the

In giving hope creates a fine line that individuals can follow to gain confidence and reslience to the
crumbling world around them. While the fellowship disbanded from one another, Frodo and Sam
went about themselves to continue the task at hand. "Fellowship had failed" leaving Aragorn,
Legolas, and Gimli to construct a plan to keep the others back toegther. Throught the film, Merry
and Pippin had become very worried about their dear friends. "Do you think they are alive? Sam and
Frodo?" became repetitive words towards Aragorn. Aragorn had taken the reins on the new task to
reunite the Hobbits back toeghther. In the process of battle, wounds, and loss would continue to
erupt around them as they continued to their next destination. Although, loss of friends and new
challanges all around gave Merry and Pippin new tasks to complete. Through the tasks at hand
Merry and Pippin would begin to reminise of the times they had with their old pals back at the Shire.
Once again, the questions would arise of "Do you think they are alive Aragorn?". Aragorn simply
answers back and says "There is still hope.". In this it shows that Aragorn was unsure of the
outcome between Sam and Frodo, but did not want to give false hope to the Hobbits. Furthermore it
shows how Percy Jackson empahsized that through Aragorn, Merry and Pippin could

Values Of Compassio Forgiveness
We all have the ability to be compassionate towards others and forgive. Humans are born as
narcissistic beings; from the moment of birth we are selfish to our own needs. Perhaps, it has
survival value. We cry when we are hungry. We do not know or care that our parents might be busy,
in a literal sense, we are capable only of thinking of and responding to our own needs. We are, as
infants, not even capable of realizing that other people have needs, desires, or a life outside of us. As
we grow up over time, ideally, we learn compassion it becomes natural to most of us, but only to a
certain point. As such, most people never genuinely become good at it. Compassion is the ability to
put ourselves in someone else's shoes, imagine things from their perspective, and then to feel
kindness for them and seek understanding of them even if what they do is harmful to us. This
usually goes against our needs and desires, and is at odds with our own experiences. ... Show more

It does not mean the person occupies the same place in your life; nor does it imply that you carry on
as if the transgression never happened. You can forgive someone and resolve never to see them
again. You don't distance yourself out of anger or spite but out of respect for yourself; out of a
healthy need to set new boundaries. Forgiving someone is not a gift to the person who hurt you but
rather a gift to yourself. The goal of forgiveness is freedom from resentment, bitterness, anger or
hatred (Macaskill, Maltby and Day, 2002). Harbouring these feelings cannot hurt another person but
can cause you great harm. Chapter 7 accurately describes compassion and forgiveness. It details that
the key to compassion and forgiveness lies within caring for others, forgiving the mistakes of others
and mostly importantly forgiving yourself for your own mistakes. Ultimately, one cannot live
harmoniously without out compassion and forgiveness in their

Economic Concerns vs. Religious Concerns in the Settling...
During the Colonial period, as settlers trickled in from the Old World, it was only after many years
of economic unrest that this became possible. The New World was a prosperous land for change.
There, settlers had the freedom to pursue aspirations that were far less tangible in England. One of
the most pressing issues that led to the colonization of the New World was the need for more and
cheaper products beyond the Mediterranean; this was ultimately the first step in the many ways that
the New World created economic prospects for those yearning for a more prosperous future.
Economic concerns of the settlers in North America were notably greater than religious concerns
during the colonial era, due to the decline in the British economy and ... Show more content on

The slave trade was also an example of how economy was a more pressing issue. Africans were
brought as early as 1617 to support the masses of crops growing throughout the colonies. The slaves
helped make up an economic system, where they were paid for by money, and produced crops that
were turned into money. When the Royal African Company lost its monopoly, Americans were
presented with yet another opportunity to cash in on the slave trade, making the economic system
that settlers had built to thrive on, even more complex. While religion did have an effect on the
settlers, the economic prospects were what kept much of the settlers in America. And while
maintaining a strong, united religious community was important for many colonies, it always came
down to whether or not it was possible to uphold a prosperous lifestyle. Economy and religion were
the two sole reasons for colonizing America. Religion did play a role in the lives of settlers, but as
more and more colonies emerged that permitted religious differences (such as Rhode Island) it
seemed the thing that united the colonists together was not the need for a similar belief system, but
the need for firm economic foundations that could be built upon. As a result of this, economic
concerns far outweighed religious concerns as more and more settlers of different belief systems
came to call upon the New World for a new set of

Empathy Star Trek
Star Trek: TNG and the Cultivation of Empathy
In this paper, I argue that watching Star Trek: The Next Generation cultivates empathy. Empathy is a
good that human beings ought to develop and having a sense of empathy is one of the best things in
life. Empathy consists in the capacity to understand what another person is going through from their
perspective. The reason that a sense of empathy is one of the best things in life is that it is
impossible to have deep and meaningful relationships with others when we don't have empathy.
Without empathy, we inevitably turn inward and live a lonely life. For this reason, empathy is one of
the best things in life.
Regular watching of Star Trek: TNG increases our capacity for empathy. The reason why this is the
case is that watching acts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Now characters in Star Trek: TNG routinely show empathetic concern for one another. For instance,
when a race of cyborgs capture Jean–Luc Picard (captain of the Enterprise on the show), the crew of
the
Enterprise do everything in their power to rescue Picard. One of their main motivations for rescuing
Picard is their experience of the sense of distress that he experiences while in captivity. This is just
one instance where empathy is shown in the program, but it happens on a regular basis. In sum,
watching
Star Trek: TNG increases our capacity for empathy because the characters regularly display empathy
on the show and because we tend to imitate the actions that we see other human beings performing.
Someone might object to this argument by pointing out that characters on the show also display
cruelty that involves a lack of empathy. For instance, in one episode a malevolent being kills one of
the members for the crew for no apparent reason. If we watch this cruelty, then perhaps we
ourselves might behave more cruelly. But this objection can be refuted. Cruelty on the show is
always shown in

Eulogy For Father
If I was given the opportunity to sit down and have a discussion with any one person, living or
deceased, I would speak with my loving husband, Todd Stevens. On May 24, 2006 my husband of
twelve years and the father to our six beautiful children was killed by a drunk driver while driving
home from work that evening. I would talk to Todd first about our children and how proud he would
be of all of them. Noah would be the first child I mentioned, as he was the baby and only six days
old when Todd was killed. I would tell him how sweet Noah is and what a kind, loving soul he has.
Also, that he is placed in the gifted and talented classes at school. I would talk next about Nathan
and how he is so independent and wants to be older then he really. About our daughter Emily and
how she made the honors list at college and just finished her first year there. I would tell him about
Joshua and that he's in his first year as an electrical apprentice an about Daniel and how he works as
a conductor at Norfolk Southern just like him. I would tell him about Michael and that he is in
apprenticeship program as well for plumber and pipefitters and about how hard he works. ... Show

The Elephant In Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go
The elephant is seen as as the most compassionate creatures on earth. They care for those around
them, even if they are not of the same species. Their fellow creatures, humans, aren't as caring. They
pick fights, slaughter each other in wars, and even abandon one another for their own survival. In
this excerpt from Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go, the author portrays the narrator as concerned
while Ruth and the other girls are contrasted as rude and apathetic to reveal how compassion is
lacking in the younger generations.
The author portrays the narrator as uneasy over Tommy's treatment from the other kids to show how
compassion is rare in young people. The narrator and the other girls were crowded around a window
waiting for the boys to pull a trick on Tommy. The narrator was unsettled and "searched for signs of
disapproval about what the boys were going to do to Tommy" (Ishiguro), but she was only met with
a "little laugh" (Ishiguro). The narrator knew something was going to happen to Tommy. She was
looking around for someone else to be just as anxious, and no one was. They even laughed a little at
the notation of caring about what is about to happen. The narrator was also worried for Tommy
because he was wearing his favorite polo and was "playing football in that"(Ishiguro). Tommy's shirt
would "get ruined'"(Ishiguro) by the muddy field. Tommy was playing football, a very hands–on
game. His favorite shirt was sure to be ruined by the roughness of the other players and

The Concept Of Compassion Fatigue
State of the Science Paper:
Compassion Fatigue
Katelyn Anderson
Fairleigh Dickinson University
A concept can be a word, an abstract or concrete thought, a phrase, or a symbolic statement.
"Concepts are formulated in words that enable people to communicate their meanings about realities
in the world and give meaning to phenomena that can directly or indirectly be seen, heard, tasted,
smelled or touched" (McEwen & Wills, 2014, p. 50). Concepts are the start of an idea, which can
lead to a thesis, research development, and eventually cause a change. Concepts are vital for the
development of nursing practice and for our patients, so that we can provide the best and most
appropriate care. The purpose of this paper is to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This unique concept was identified in 1992 by Carla Joinson, a nurse, who identified compassion
fatigue by studying emergency room personnel. It was defined as, "a unique form of burnout that
affects individuals in caregiving roles" (Lombardo & Eyre, 2011). In 1995, there were developments
within compassion fatigue and the term secondary traumatic stress disorder (STSD) was formed
synonymously. The caring and empathetic relationships, which nurses strive to build with their
patients, can become overwhelming and have the potential to lead to compassion fatigue. As nurses,
we have an innate ability to care for others. Because of this, we find that we have put others before
ourselves, which makes for compassionate and empathetic nursing care, but can lead to internal
downfalls. There is a shift for the nurse, when providing nurturing care for patients becomes
difficult. The downfalls are seen after repeated exposure to stressful work environments, work
overload, lack of recognition and the repeated exposure to patients suffering, which nurses
attempted to relieve. With advancements in healthcare, prolonging of life, increasing physical and
emotional needs from patients and their families and the aging of American, nurses have an increase
in stressors and demands. Sabo (2011) discusses certain personality characteristics which can lead to
compassion fatigue. Some being type A personalities,

What Is The Dialogue Between The Misfit And The Grandmother
In Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" characters like the Grandmother and also
The Misfit facilitate to point out problems on each a personal and whole society level. O'Connor
crafts two characters that just about become symbols for the larger problems they have; their
personal issues will be applied to a bigger scale. The dialogue between the Misfit and the
Grandmother in "A Good Man is Hard to Find" tries to tackle deep queries of ethics and what a
"good man" truly is, and also the concept of rights or justice among others.
O'Connor's characterization of the grandmother serves to form conflicting ideas of what a "good
man" is. The grandmother talks plenty concerning the past and the way in her time folks may leave

This is not unwarranted, as she merely tries to get out of the situation alive, nevertheless it calls into
question her character and also the strength of her convictions. It conjointly makes the readers
themselves question their own morals; what would they be doing during a similar state of affairs?
The reader will feel sympathy for the Grandmother during this dangerous situation, nevertheless it 's
her actions because what she says progresses and that causes the reader to pause and actually
question the character of the Grandmother. The Misfit's accomplices take her family, as they 're
taken into the woods and shot dead. Throughout this point, the Grandmother appears to solely be
centered on preservation, along with her solely recognition of something awry being after two
isolated yells of "Bailey Boy!" O'Connor is showing the character of not just the Grandmother,
however what she perceives to be the common trend in 1950's culture. The concept of family unity
and selflessness, even by people who propagate the concept, is forgotten once the individual is
vulnerable.
Whereas O'Connor will have hints of existential philosophy with reference to the individual, she is
ultimately influenced deeply by her Catholic upbringing. This ends up in the Grandmother being a
highly religious character, perpetually asking the Misfit if he prays. Whereas on the surface it might
seem obvious the grandmother is a more religious person than the Misfit , but in

Rising Strong Sparknotes
Book Assignment As I read Rising Strong by Brene Brown it really hit home with me. In her book
she talks about something most people do not like to deal with, which is shame and being
vulnerable. We all feel shame no matter who we are. Some people take it better than others do.
Some people take their shame and burry it deep down inside them and others takes their shame and
makes great success stories out of it. Brene Brown talks about how much she struggled with being
vulnerable and how she dealt with it. She starts off her book with a long presentation of her book
and how we can approach shame. She enlightens us that Rising Strong is regarding getting to the
heart of the most excruciating and uncomfortable minutes we 've ever experienced, getting genuine
about the path in which those moments have made us feel and being sufficiently striking to consider
ourselves responsible to get up and develop from the past as we move into what more there is to
come. She likewise focuses on that yes, most definitely, disappointment is excruciating,
exceptionally difficult. Tragically be that as it may, the stories of battle to achievement that we 're so
regularly told do more than see their way through the pain and make their way to be success stories.
Brown states that all we need are, "a critical mass of bad asses who are willing to dare, fall, feel
their way through tough emotion, and rise again" (Brown, 2015, p. 30.) In chapter one of her book
Rising Strong, Brown talks about the

Empathy: Egan And Schroeder
Empathy is a key value in the role of the helper and is described one way by Egan and Schroeder as;
a personality trait that allows a person to feel what others feel and have the ability to understand
other people, from the inside. It is also a state of feeling for others that is situation specific and
understanding another person's experiences (Egan and Schroeder, 2009). Egan and Schroeder state
empathy is, a basic value that informs and drives all helping behavior and a method of
communication that involves three phases, empathic resonance, expressed empathy and received
empathy (Egan and Schroeder, 2009).
One way empathy is expressed is through active listening and deep interpersonal transactions (Egan
and Schroeder, 2009). Through interpersonal interactions, the helper tunes into the client's verbal
and nonverbal communication, listening for behaviours and the feelings while acknowledging they
are hearing and understanding the client's story. Verbal and nonverbal means of communication can
in the form of, body posture and movements, making eye contact, facial expressions and even voice
related behaviors such as pitch, spacing of words and even silence.

The World Is The Best
As time elapses, ideas, thoughts, and view of the world tend to modify. I assume that the literature
that is present from hundred years ago until now, displays a shift of religion to nature. Religion used
to be the basis for most of the things, but as new ideas approached, nature began to replace it. Not
implying that nature completely replaced religion, but it became a new way to understand the world.
I believe there is always going to be a debate on which way to understand the world is the best.
Religious people would argue that the bible is the guide for lives and the way to control the world,
but on the other hand, science also tries to explain this idea. William Bradford, from 1590 to 1657,
on his writing "Of Plymouth Plantation," ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
How would it pleased God to see a person die in a desperate manner even if they had sin? God gives
us life and would pardon our sins if we seek for him. However, I believe the puritans, including
Bradford, felt that there was no option of forgiveness. According to what I have read in Bradford's
story, I would say that religion could make someone selfish. I am not against religion, but this is
what I conclude based on this literature. I feel this way because it seems that they just think for
themselves. They believe they are perfect and that anyone else is evil. I feel that being a religious
person, should not make them feel superior like the puritans did. I believe that in God's eye we are
all the same, but the puritans saw the Native Americans as savages and not pure. An example of this
is in the "first encounter" the puritans had with the so called savages. "Thus it pleased God to
vanquish their enemies...and by his special providence so to dispose that not any of them were either
hurt or hit..." (79) In my point of view, here is a clear example of how they are being selfish. They
are just worried about them not being hurt, but what about the savages? I feel that religion means
caring for everyone, but here I see the opposite of that. Again, how God would be pleased by an

Lack Of Empathy In American Society
Empathy is the ability to understand what another person is feeling (Posick 1). In order to show
empathy you must see things from another person's eyes, allowing you to understand and relate to
what they are feeling. Naturally for us as humans, it is easier to empathize with others who have
been through similar situations or face similar problems as we do. If we as citizens could begin to be
more empathic as a whole, we would bring an end to several major problems that we face in our
daily lives as Americans, and as people as a whole. Empathy is needed in American society. One
reason why empathy is needed in society is to reduce racism. Studies show that "perspective taking

If Americans made an effort to spread empathy it would end a large amount of ignorance and self–
centered thinking that leads to seemingly senseless killings such as the shooting in Charlestown by
Dylann Roof. Lack of empathy comes almost naturally to citizens in America who are so used to
doing what is considered normal in their culture. There are examples nearly every day of people
lacking empathy, which causes them to go to extremes in pursuit of money, power, or
acknowledgement, causing them to ruin their lives by making irrational decisions. Not only does
empathy prevent the natural biases created through cultural practices, it also allows individuals to
think more critically about the effects of their actions. One might say that racism is pure ignorance,
anti–intellectualism has nothing to do with empathy, and that crime is merely just

Empathy In The Healthcare Field
In the healthcare field, empathy is an essential trait. Without empathy, patients can get depressed and
lose sight of their end goal. The image above illustrates how a patient is treated with facial
expression of the individuals and cropping of the image. "The great gift of human beings is that we
have the power of empathy," (Streep). Empathy is, in fact, so powerful that it has given strength to
the weak and lack of empathy has weakened the strong. In a world full of blatant good versus evil
and where terror and conflict are unceasing, one must remain empathetic.
Healthcare workers are losing their compassionate trait due to the constant numbing overexposure
of violence on social media that ultimately leads to death. Some may wonder how it

Religion In James Agee's A Death In The Family
Whether a person is religious or not, everyone has a different viewpoint on religion. Some people
see religion as a helping hand, something that is meant to do good. Others see it as a negative force
used for "evil" and to cause harm. A lot of people have no opinion on the matter whatsoever. One of
the main themes in James Agee's novel is religion and the causes of it. In A Death in the Family, the
characters are very set in stone with their beliefs. While one character turns to their religion for
comfort after a tragedy, another uses a person's lack of beliefs as a reason not to perform an act for
their family. Throughout Agee's novel, religion is used as a constructive force for some characters
and destructive for other characters.

Why Is Empathy Important In Human Services
Conflicting messages will inevitably hinder our communication and our ability to help those we
serve.
The Skill of Empathy Another important skill in the field of human services would be empathy. In
the last two years, I have learned the difference between sympathy and empathy. Sympathy actually
separates and isolates individuals, while empathy empowers them. As helpers, we cannot stand on a
pedestal reaching down and effectively help others. Empathy allows us to bring others up to equal
grounds where we can be much more effective.
Some research even suggest that empathy is the key. It has been suggested that individuals often
have the tools they need to live fulfilling lives and to better themselves, if only given the power to

service involves helping people, and in order to help people, we must enter into some form of
relationship. I believe that respect is a key element of a successful relationship. As helpers, we must
be able to respect others. We must respect their views and opinions; we must respect their customs
and beliefs; and we must respect their individual right of choice. I believe many of the basic
fundamentals of human service, such as confidentiality, empathy, and even antonym, can fall under
the umbrella of respect. If I truly respect, another I will not try to force my own agenda, and if I
truly respect another, I will keep in confidence the information they have shared. I believe that
respect is a right that should be granted to everyone without limitations, however, respect doesn't
require agreement or even acceptance. I have developed the ability to respect the views of others
without conforming, which for me is a true sign of personal growth. The last two years has taught
me that I can find validation without conformity, and that I can respect and even admire the diversity

The Integral Role of Religion Illustrated in Gabriel...
Religion plays an integral role in The Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia. It is
generally considered by most readers that the initial chapters don't consist of the religious and
spiritual makeup of the townspeople but in fact, religion is subliminally present even earlier, within
the title of the novel itself. The word "Death" is integrally and inextricably linked with religious
matter. After all, birth and the inevitably of death are the two most important and debatable points in
religion.
Religion is meant to be a solid force, helping society to bond better and progress in a civilized
manner. For the same purpose, religion, with its laws and codes of conduct, monitors peoples' way
of life to ensure that humanity remains ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, Marquez underlines, "Both were exhausted from the barbarous work of death..." (49).
Marquez exemplifies the way in which some aspects of religion are ignored and some have great
emphasis put on them. When Roman finds out that his new bride is not a virgin, he returns her. She
is beaten savagely, and her brothers are called from the brothel to come defend the family's honor.
The hypocrisy of family is revealed as they consider honor to be a part of the religion and instead of
religiously and peacefully solve the manner, the brothers murder Santiago Nasar. The family
believes that upholding the honor is righteous, and in doing so the sin of murdering Nasar is
downplayed. Furthermore, when the brothers put down their knives in front of the priest, instead of
giving them advice or condemning them, the priest "recalled the surrender as an act of dignity" (49).
This is in total conflict with Catholicism as it is amongst the Ten Commandments that "Thou shall
not kill" and thus it illustrates that even the priest of the town has lost the knowledge of the true
religion. Marquez cements the corruption of religion as even father Amador protected the brothers
and not only him but "the lawyer stood by the thesis of homicide in legitimate defense of honor,
which was upheld by the court in good faith" (48). Marquez continues to demonstrate that the
society was lenient on the brothers due to tradition and thus it illustrates that religion was only a

Over Identification: A Case Study
5. Over–identification is the process that occurs when a helper (professional or simply social)
becomes overly involved in the client's situation due to overwhelming similarities. It can cause the
helper to have a skewed view on the situation and may result in the helper being unable to
effectively address the problem of the client.
6. Empathy: the concept that allows people to understand and address other people's problems.
Empathy allows people to experience someone's pain/problems without becoming overwhelmed by
their own feelings or ignoring the importance of the situation they have been presented with.
Sympathy: the concept that causes someone to pity another's situation without actively helping.
Despite sympathy allowing people to understand

Analyzing an Advertisement for a Book of the Christian Faith
In our society today large numbers of people practice some sort of religion. Realizing how many
people inhabit the world today it's not hard to believe that there are literally thousands of religions
out there. Making a choice as to what religion you fit into can be a daunting task. Even if you
already practice a set religion sometimes its hard to know if you are putting your faith in the right
hands so to speak. People get into a religion and they think that their beliefs are right and everyone
else's are wrong or twisted. Also people want the religion they are practicing to be the preferred
religion of the country or of the world. So from the beginning of history people have ... Show more

This sets the scene, letting you know that you are probably looking at an American city. All around
this building are other buildings almost as tall as the center one if it weren't for the tower sitting on
top of it. The other buildings all seem to be apartment buildings squeezed quite close together,
giving the impression that this is a rather large city. You can see the top of a street light from the
point where it starts to bend in the lower right corner.
All around this picture there are people floating in the air around the city block. Most of them are
floating in the sky above the buildings but some are at the level of the building roofs and even lower.
There are some people all the way down at the bottom of the picture around the height of the

most of them are going about their daily business. There is a wide variety of people depicted in the

Introduction: Altruism is a form of pro–social behaviour in which a person will voluntarily help
another at some cost to themselves. The primary motivation for altruistic behaviour is seen as a
desire to improve the welfare of another person rather than the anticipation of some reward or for
any other reason that might indicate self–interest. One of the major problems for psychologists has
been determining what is truly altruistic and what might be better explained in terms of egoism.
Batson et al.'s (1997) empathy–altruism hypothesis proposes ... Show more content on

However if the cost of leaving was high (they had to do an onerous task if they left) then those in the
low empathy condition were more likely to stay – even more likely than those in the high empathy
condition.
However, it is possible that people who help in such situations do so to avoid punishment, such as
social disapproval that could arise as a result of not helping. To test that, further research where the
potential for negative social evaluation was manipulated, concern for disapproval of others did not
appear to explain why empathic concern motivated helping. (Fultz et al)
The negative state–releif model by Cialdini suggests that when we are experiencing negative states,
we are motivated to alleviate this condition by helping others, which is personally rewarding. People
learn during childhood that helping others is a positive behaviour that will make them feel good
about themselves. Therefore, the motivation for helping is for egoistic reasons, depending on the
anticipated emotional consequences. The primary objective in any behaviour that appears altruistic
is actually the enhancement of our own mood. Cialdini carried out a study, where participants were

Hospitality: The Madonna Of 115th Street
Hospitality is defined as the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or
strangers. Hospitality is something that can be seen everywhere, regardless of geographical location,
religion, etc. This initially sparked my interest because hospitality is something does not require
anything special to do. Everywhere a person goes, hospitality can be seen in some way, shape, or
form.
The Madonna of 115th Street is an amazing example of hospitality throughout history. The excerpt
details the days and nights of the Festa. On July 16th, the great bell in the campanile of the church of
Our Lady of Mount Carmel announces that the festa had begun. This fetsa unites several Italian
communities from those in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and California. Preparation for
this festival can take weeks at a time, houses are cleaned from head to toe in anticipation of housing
relatives visiting from other states. For the next few weeks the community gathers together in the
streets and celebrates greatly from sunrise to sunset. Music, dancing, fires, festivals, everything is
prominent in the streets as the Italian community seeks to express itself. The festa is a time to come
together and create a sense of community. Religious foundations, sharing of food, parades, all of this
signifies what it is to be a part of the Festa. Hospitality is creating a warm and welcome
environment to those around you. Everything about the Festa signifies these qualities.

The Reprimand Essay
Sympathy in The Reprimand Sympathy is an extension of empathic concern, or the perception,
understanding, and reaction to the distress or need of another human being. Sympathy must be given
and received in order for the world to operate because all humans make mistakes that impact other
people's lives. The Reprimand is a short "phone play" written by Jane Anderson in 2000. The two
characters, Rhona and Mim, have a confrontation about what Rhona believes to be an inappropriate
remark during a meeting. In The Reprimand, Mim deserves the most sympathy from the audience
because Rhona intentionally manipulates her into believing she is not respected by her male co–
workers. Mim deserves the most sympathy because Rhona tells her that she ... Show more content

This single comment by Mim lets everyone know that she really is hurt by the situation. In any
situation, the audience will give sympathy to the character who is degraded by the other characters
just like Mim is degraded by Rhona. Rhona does not deserve the sympathy of the audience because
she did not handle the situation in a professional manner. She is too forceful and degrading to Mim
when she confronts her about Mim's comment. Rhona says, "but you didn't say better, you said
bigger" (Anderson 1783). She corrects what Mim meant by her comment to make her sound like she
was trying to be mean, when she actually was trying to do something nice for her because it was
Rhona's project. She was implying that Rhona deserved the big chair because it was her project and
she would most likely be leading the meeting with the other employees. This act of kindness and
respect is turned around to be mean and disrespectful by Rhona. Rhona says, "Honey, there was a
reason why Dick and Danny asked you all the follow–up questions" (Anderson 1784). Rhona is
implying to Mim that she took the attention away from her even though she is the one who is in
charge of the project. Sympathy should not be given to Rhona because she comes across as a selfish
woman who just wants to be the center of attention. Most people do not appreciate this type of
personality. One last meaningful thing that Rhona

The concept of care and caring relationships vary from person to person. Author Nel Noddings
addresses these concepts in her 2005 book The Challenge to Care in Schools: An Alternative

would be the people you see on a day to day basis but are not connect with emotionally. She
suggests that we are not obligated to care for distant others but I have a differing view. In my
opinion, we are obligated to care for distant others by watching out for/warning others about dangers
that may negatively impact their lives Caring for those who are not well connected with us as

As see states on page 116, "caring at a distance is fraught with difficulties." (Noddings, 2005)
"Finally, when we have the power and desire to act at a distance, it is tempting to initiate and
control. We are too impatient or too confident or too puffed up with our own righteous sense of
responsibility to listen and encourage initiative from others. (Noddings, 2005) Essentially, Noddings'
is trying to say that we –human beings–are too busy in our lives to worry about the wellbeing of
those who are distant from us. It is difficult to care for distant others in Noddings' sense of care
because caring relationships require engrossment from carer to cared–for, and acknowledgement of
the engrossment from cared–for to carer. "...we (here in the United States, for example) could not, as
individuals, be obligated to care for starving children in Africa because there is no way for most of
us to see caring through to its completion. We might sympathetically send $10 to Oxfam or some
other relief organization, but we have no reliable method of knowing whether our money will be
used to relieve hunger...I still think this is an accurate descriptive account of a major difficulty in
trying to care at a distance." (p.

Religion And Its Effect On Society
Religion plays a large role in today's society, it's used to comfort us in our greatest times of need as
well as explain seemingly unknowable questions, such as what is the meaning of life, why are we
here, what happens when we die, why do we suffer but now as in the past religion can be a harmful
factor in our society. It has been the cause of wars, witch hunts, and proliferated superstition. Today
there are such laws that allow a parent to deny their child adequate medical care even if it's to treat a
potentially life threatening illness. In other cases religion is cited as a reason to deny someone
access to birth control. In school's modern science is at times having to contend with creationism
which seems to be a reinterpreting of modern science and is in complete opposition with established
facts. Other times such things as sex education is taught inaccurately which then leaders to things
such as high rates of teen pregnancies and STD's spreading. In other countries these actions are at
times more extreme such as when we hear about suicide bombings, honor killing, and the like. In
this paper I will discuss a few of these topics that I find to be pertinent, yet the topics are many. I
will discuss the harms that such actions can cause to us as a society both socially and physically due
to such harmful laws, I will also discuss the social reasons as to why such actions are performed in
the first place and why they may be found to be socially acceptable. Lastly I will speak

Elsie and Her Mother in Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit
In a story of a young girl coming of age and finding her sexuality in a very religious community, it
is key to have a female figure that plays a key role for the character. A mother should play the key
role but what happens when this role is confused with a very spiritual role? Where will a young girl
turn to when her life goes against the rules society has set for her?
Jeanette has lived a sheltered life with no influence on her except for the church. Her mother is a
strict Christian with a deep resentment for things and people not within her fold. Being brought up
in a society where going against the norm is a sin. A society that shakes its head at acts of

the Lord and teach his words to others. Her goal in life was to go and be a missionary, to teach
others how to believe in God. Combined with this imbedded sense of self is the confidence Elsie
gave her. Elsie not only understood
the word of the Lord and came from within the society Jeanette grew up in, she had a sense of the
world around her, that the world didn?t start and stop with the preaching of the Lord. Elsie gave
Jeanette a feeling of fellowship, a deep friendship that was based on true feelings, not the Lord.
In one part of the book Elsie helps Jeanette with the transition of home schooling, which was based
on biblical texts, to public schooling. Elsie gave Jeanette a way of incorporating her biblical
background into a public school setting, even if it did shock and raise eyebrows. The older woman
gave Jeanette a much–needed avenue to express herself. At this time her mother is not too upset with
the friendship. She likes the reaction Jeanette is getting from her religious art works and other
biblical oddities that seem out of place in public school. Elsie is still seen as a fellow follower, a
follower of Jeanette?s mother.

How Empathetic Can Improve Relationships
There are many ways that being empathetic can improve relationships between people and nations.
Empathy gives people the ability to understand other people feelings. People who share empathy
with others are understanding, helpful and open minded. Understanding each other's emotions can
help keep a relationship strong and healthy. One way that empathetic can improve relationships
between people is putting themselves in the other persons situation. When you put yourself in
someone's shoes, you start to understand where they are coming from. Which will avoid arguments
and turmoil in that relationship. As for nations, that can be a great way to avoid wars. Empathy gives
people the chance to help others because it gives them a clear understanding

Essay on Religious Concerns during Colonial Period
"Throughout the colonial period, economic concerns had more to do with the settling of British
North America than did religious concerns." According to this statement, both economic and
religious reasons contributed to the founding of the thirteen colonies by the British in North
America. The many people who settled in New England came there in search of religious freedom.
Their hope was to escape the religious persecution they were facing in England, worship freely, and
have the opportunity to choose which religion they wanted to take part in. The Southern colonies
were developed for economic motives. They had goals for mercantilism and increasing the
prosperity of England. Finally, the Middle colonies were founded upon diverse ... Show more

During the reign of James I, a small group of these humble country folk left for Leyden, Holland,
where they were allowed to practice their religion as they wished. Some years later, a part of this
Leyden congregation decided to immigrate to the New World where, in 1620, they founded the
"Pilgrim" colony of Plymouth.
Soon after Charles I ascended to the throne in 1625, Puritan leaders in England were subjected to
what they viewed as increasing persecution. Several ministers, who were no longer allowed to
preach, gathered their flocks about them and followed the Pilgrims to America. Unlike the earlier
immigrants, however, this second group, which established the Massachusetts Bay colony in 1630,
included many people of substantial wealth and position. Within the next decade, a Puritan stamp
had been placed upon more than a half–dozen English colonies.
Pennsylvania was also founded for the sole purpose of religion, but unlike the other colonies, it
began to increase toleration of religious diversity later on in the progression of its settlement. King
Charles owed William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, a favor. Penn asked the King for some
land in the colonies, and in return the King gave Penn a piece of the woods (Sylvania) in the New
World. William Penn, who was a Quaker, created a place where everyone was free to worship God
in his or her own way.

Religion Affects Daily Life
How does Religion Affect Daily Lives?
" The purpose of religion is to control yourself, not to criticise others."– Dalai Lama. Religion is not
something people blindly follow for the hope of reaching heaven. At one point or another in life,
every person encounters the moment where they make the decision of being an active religious
person, a religious person but don't attend church, or don't believe in a superior power. Whether a
person chooses option one, two, or three, each choice brings consequences and a different life with
that choice. People live a different kind of life, with different goals to reach, and what kind of life a
person may want to live. Religion has a profound effect on people's daily lives, and the areas it
affects are work life, family life, and the standards a person holds.
Work Life
It happens to everyone, people are at work (or school) and have a project due on Monday, but they
see the clock ticking closer and closer to 5pm, and have that urge to slip out a few mins early so they

consequence of doing this is the person having to choose whether to finish the project on Saturday,
Sunday, or if the person really wants to push it, Monday morning. So what option are you going to
take?
Work Smarter, Not Harder

IASB Conceptual Framework
To,
Hans Hoogervorst
IASB Chairman
London, UK
Date: Nov 11, 2017
Dear Sir,
I am writing this report in order to outline one change that I believe needs to be made to the
Conceptual Framework. I have attached the report that details the change and the rationale for the
change for your kind consideration.
Thanking You,
Sincerely,
Your Name,
Student,

Introduction
The IASB conceptual framework is a framework of theories prepared by a standard setting body
aimed t dealing with practical problems faced by users of financial statements; the characteristics of
accounting information; the elements of financial statements and concepts for measuring and
reporting the elements such as assets and liabilities (Financial Times 2017). The benefit is that
uniform accounting standards can be applied to deal with common accounting problems; have fewer
standards to reduce the volume of standards; help accountants and auditors to resolve accounting
issues. However one of the issues is the going concern assumption, which does not appear to take
into account more serious risks that an enterprise may be associated with such as sustainability risks.
The problem/Change
One of the problems with the conceptual framework is that it does not address the principle of
sustainability within its going concern assumption even in the recent Summary of Tentative
Decisions related to the framework (IFRS 2017). Therefore it is proposed that the conceptual
framework

Empathy In Nursing
"Empathy is a respectful understanding of what others are experiencing. Instead of offering
empathy, we often have a strong urge to give advice or reassurance and to explain our own position
or feeling. Empathy, however, calls upon us to empty our mind and listen to others with our whole
being," said by Marshall Rosenberg. As a nurse it is a part of your duties to incorporate empathy in
the patient care. Nurses care for multiple patients and need to tend to each individual's needs in
order to improve the quality of care. Empathy is an essential intellectual trait that opposes
intellectual narrow–mindedness. Intellectual empathy is essential in understanding the patients,

Adults And The Influence Of Empathy In Adults
As with many other skills, empathy is a learned skill that requires an awareness that other people
think, feel, and behave in ways that are both similar and different from one's self, or put simply,
being able to relate to and understand what another person is experiencing or feeling (McDonald &
Messinger, 2011). One of the first experiences that people have with empathy frequently appears as
a baby when we hear another infant cry (Szalavitz, 2010). Other research has shown that infants not
only favor adults who appear to be more helpful, but they also tend to offer voluntary help to adults
who appear to be having difficulties when reaching for something (Szalavitz, 2010). Therefore,
according to this research, it might be suggested that whether

a merciless event, it is selfish without even realizing it. Doing good deeds does not make us a good
individual, it just makes us decent. The benefits of generosity for both our physical and mental
health are outstanding. generosity reduces stress, supports one's physical health, enhances one's
sense of purpose, and helps fight depression, it has also been shown to increase one's lifespan
because all the health benefits of not being stressed. You may think you are being selfless, but you
are also benefiting yourself in a way you did not know about. Developing compassion increases our
happiness. In an experiment published in Science by Harvard Business School professor Michael
Norton, they gave money to; two sets of groups, one that spent money on themselves and the other
spent it on other people. It was found that the people who bought presents for others showed an
increase in happiness, this was even the case with children giving treats to others. We are using an
unselfish event and making for an ego boost. However, by doing so we need to become conscious of
the world around us. As we develop more of an awareness we become more concerned about what is
going on around us. Therefore, we carry guilt for simple things like throwing a cigarette on the
ground, we may feel guilty for a bit, but we can always change our actions and help the world
around us. Compassion is simple and uses common sense, it is humble and straightforward. Being
compassionate is difficult for those who

Empathy Research Papers
Empathy is defined as feeling for others and as the ability to understand the feelings, pains, or
hardships of others as if they were your own. While some believe that empathy is a choice and can
be manipulated by what we think about people from a certain, race, nationality, or group, others
think that it is part of a person's personality, and is hard to change. Despite these differences in
opinions, one thing is very clear. Empathy has many benefits that can help a person succeed in their

Figley's Model Of The Compassion Fatigue Process
Lipchick (2002), describes the therapist–client relationship as a structure coupling between to
unique human beings in complementary roles. In a healthcare context, Sabo (2006) states that
empathy and compassion are critical aspects involved in understanding the clients' needs to create a
therapeutic relationship between client and nurse. The integration of the concepts of compassion and
empathy could become a negative facilitator of 'the cost of caring for others' later described as
Compassion Fatigue (CF) (Figley, 1995). The definition is contested, though; the first definition was
proposed by Joinson (1992) characterising CF as a unique form of burnout that nurses experience
because of exhaustion. Coetzee and Klopper (2010) explain that CF is a concept established in
relation to the burnout of nurses'. Their duty to tend to sick and traumatised patients exposes them to
pain and suffering daily, and thus many lose their ability to nurture. Supported by Pack and Roberts
(2012), CF occurs when individuals are unable to continue bearing the trauma of others,
consequently leading to a significant reduction in wellbeing and work capacity. Whilst CF has
regularly been observed in a healthcare environment, no such research has been conducted in a sport
and exercise context.
Figley's (2002) model of the Compassion Fatigue Process enables a further understanding of the
factors contributing to CF and some key terms surrounding it. The model is based on assumptions

Tartuffe, Religion Essay
The context surrounding the period in which Tartuffe was written in, the 17th Century is
remembered as being a time of extreme power for the French Monarchy. King Louis XIV and
Cardinal Richelieu transformed France's feudal monarchy to an absolute monarchy. What must also
be noted about this time is the fact that the Catholic Church and Politicians had a great deal of
power over authors and playwrights. In this time of social and religious persecution, Molière created
Tartuffe , a comedy dealing with hypocrisy and to a great extent, religion and how religion can be
used in a negative way, to mask sin. The play is known to be offensive towards the Catholic Church
and religion in general. When it was first performed in 1664, it was censored, ... Show more content

He is at the beginning of the play seen as a God like figure, particularly to Orgon and Madame
Pernelle, by this he is strong and inspirational, however, when he does realises he has been found
out for being in the wrong, his persona changes to guilty and even vulnerable. This is shown in Act
III scene 6 when Damis accuses Tartuffe of trying to seduce Elmire, Tartuffe uses reverse
psychology to win Orgon over by confessing the all things awful, to an extent in which Orgon
begins to sympathise with him. It is clearly shown that Tartuffe goes to the absolute extreme when
he apologises to Orgon;
Oui mon frère, je suis un méchant, un coupable,
Un malheureux pécheur tout pleine iniquité,
Les plus grand scélérat qui jamais ait été;
Chaque instant de ma vie est change de souillures;
Elle n'est qu'un amas de crimes et d'ordures;
Et je vois que le ciel, pour ma punition,
Me veut mortifier en cette occasion. The language used is extremely depressing, almost showing
that it is out of character for Tartuffe to do such a thing, he just feels that he should confess as he is
under Orgon's roof and shouldn't make his son out to be a liar. This is what Orgon believes, and
although the audience knows differently, Damis is still asked to leave Orgon's house, showing
Orgon, a very religious man, being completely hypocritical, as he is undermining his family. Orgon

Examples Of Altrruism In A Streetcar Named Desire

  • 1. Examples Of Altrruism In A Streetcar Named Desire I have always depended on the kindness of strangers – Blanche DuBois, A Streetcar Named Desire Definition of Empathy and Altruism Empathy derives from the German word Einfühlung, meaning to feel the suffering and troubles of another from within (Clarke, 2014). The empathic concern that enlivens us to action and to alleviate the perils, poverty or punishments borne by another. Humans devoid of empathy are bereft of compassion and immune to the needs and welfare of another. The renowned researcher Stephen Post defined altruism as "Unselfish delight in the wellbeing of others and engagement in acts of care on their behalf". I would add that authentic altruistic expression demands the wellbeing of another as paramount, often to the detriment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Daniel Batson (1989) and his associates found out that regardless of anticipated mood enhancement, high–empathy subjects helped more than low–empathy subjects. In other words, high–empathy subjects would still helped more either under easy escape conditions or even when they could probably get good mood to relieve from negative state without helping. Therefore, they concluded that, obviously, something other than relieving negative state was motivating the helping behavior of the high–empathy subjects in their studies. It contradicted with the theory proposed by Robert Cialdini (1987) which supported that empathy–altruism hypothesis was actually the product of an entirely egoistic desire for personal mood ... • 3. Diabolical Characterization In The Open Boat In the Open Boat by Stephen Crane, the correspondent's seems to show a change through his nature of being a cynical man from the beginning of the story to the changed man he becomes toward the end. I believe this change was caused by the brotherhood that was formed between the four men along with the situation of them being lost at sea, which caused him to change and grow as a character. I will support this claim with both textual evidence from the story and my own character analysis of the character. In the beginning of the Open Boat, the correspondent is portrayed as a hard–bitten character that has seen it all, and believes that no joy can be found in the world. This is hinted in the brief introduction of his character that Crane gives us, "The correspondent, pulling at the other oar, watched the waves and wondered why he was there." (Crane 1048). We meet this character when he is rowing the boat, something he complains about doing and is shown to detest. "The correspondent wondered ingenuously how in the name of all that was sane could there be people who thought it amusing to row a boat. It was not an amusement; it was a diabolical punishment" (Crane 1052). What the others viewed as a small form of amusement, The correspondent made opposite opinion known when he compared it to "diabolical punishment", however even though the correspondent has made his hatred known for rowing. He is shown to be willing to do it to the point of exhaustion so he could allow his fellow ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Through empathizing, others are able to express the meaning of how one feels, it also emphazises that individuals can find secuirty and safety in talking with others. Certain individuals seep hope into others to boost their state of mind and to continue on their journey. Individudals may also find themselves in situations of loss and dispair in which becomes burndens on ones shoulders. At times bright figured individuals find ways to empathize with others to find contentment in the lowerminded individuals. In giving hope creates a fine line that individuals can follow to gain confidence and reslience to the crumbling world around them. While the fellowship disbanded from one another, Frodo and Sam went about themselves to continue the task at hand. "Fellowship had failed" leaving Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli to construct a plan to keep the others back toegther. Throught the film, Merry and Pippin had become very worried about their dear friends. "Do you think they are alive? Sam and Frodo?" became repetitive words towards Aragorn. Aragorn had taken the reins on the new task to reunite the Hobbits back toeghther. In the process of battle, wounds, and loss would continue to erupt around them as they continued to their next destination. Although, loss of friends and new challanges all around gave Merry and Pippin new tasks to complete. Through the tasks at hand Merry and Pippin would begin to reminise of the times they had with their old pals back at the Shire. Once again, the questions would arise of "Do you think they are alive Aragorn?". Aragorn simply answers back and says "There is still hope.". In this it shows that Aragorn was unsure of the outcome between Sam and Frodo, but did not want to give false hope to the Hobbits. Furthermore it shows how Percy Jackson empahsized that through Aragorn, Merry and Pippin could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Values Of Compassio Forgiveness We all have the ability to be compassionate towards others and forgive. Humans are born as narcissistic beings; from the moment of birth we are selfish to our own needs. Perhaps, it has survival value. We cry when we are hungry. We do not know or care that our parents might be busy, in a literal sense, we are capable only of thinking of and responding to our own needs. We are, as infants, not even capable of realizing that other people have needs, desires, or a life outside of us. As we grow up over time, ideally, we learn compassion it becomes natural to most of us, but only to a certain point. As such, most people never genuinely become good at it. Compassion is the ability to put ourselves in someone else's shoes, imagine things from their perspective, and then to feel kindness for them and seek understanding of them even if what they do is harmful to us. This usually goes against our needs and desires, and is at odds with our own experiences. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It does not mean the person occupies the same place in your life; nor does it imply that you carry on as if the transgression never happened. You can forgive someone and resolve never to see them again. You don't distance yourself out of anger or spite but out of respect for yourself; out of a healthy need to set new boundaries. Forgiving someone is not a gift to the person who hurt you but rather a gift to yourself. The goal of forgiveness is freedom from resentment, bitterness, anger or hatred (Macaskill, Maltby and Day, 2002). Harbouring these feelings cannot hurt another person but can cause you great harm. Chapter 7 accurately describes compassion and forgiveness. It details that the key to compassion and forgiveness lies within caring for others, forgiving the mistakes of others and mostly importantly forgiving yourself for your own mistakes. Ultimately, one cannot live harmoniously without out compassion and forgiveness in their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Economic Concerns vs. Religious Concerns in the Settling... During the Colonial period, as settlers trickled in from the Old World, it was only after many years of economic unrest that this became possible. The New World was a prosperous land for change. There, settlers had the freedom to pursue aspirations that were far less tangible in England. One of the most pressing issues that led to the colonization of the New World was the need for more and cheaper products beyond the Mediterranean; this was ultimately the first step in the many ways that the New World created economic prospects for those yearning for a more prosperous future. Economic concerns of the settlers in North America were notably greater than religious concerns during the colonial era, due to the decline in the British economy and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The slave trade was also an example of how economy was a more pressing issue. Africans were brought as early as 1617 to support the masses of crops growing throughout the colonies. The slaves helped make up an economic system, where they were paid for by money, and produced crops that were turned into money. When the Royal African Company lost its monopoly, Americans were presented with yet another opportunity to cash in on the slave trade, making the economic system that settlers had built to thrive on, even more complex. While religion did have an effect on the settlers, the economic prospects were what kept much of the settlers in America. And while maintaining a strong, united religious community was important for many colonies, it always came down to whether or not it was possible to uphold a prosperous lifestyle. Economy and religion were the two sole reasons for colonizing America. Religion did play a role in the lives of settlers, but as more and more colonies emerged that permitted religious differences (such as Rhode Island) it seemed the thing that united the colonists together was not the need for a similar belief system, but the need for firm economic foundations that could be built upon. As a result of this, economic concerns far outweighed religious concerns as more and more settlers of different belief systems came to call upon the New World for a new set of ... • 11. Empathy Star Trek Star Trek: TNG and the Cultivation of Empathy In this paper, I argue that watching Star Trek: The Next Generation cultivates empathy. Empathy is a good that human beings ought to develop and having a sense of empathy is one of the best things in life. Empathy consists in the capacity to understand what another person is going through from their perspective. The reason that a sense of empathy is one of the best things in life is that it is impossible to have deep and meaningful relationships with others when we don't have empathy. Without empathy, we inevitably turn inward and live a lonely life. For this reason, empathy is one of the best things in life. Regular watching of Star Trek: TNG increases our capacity for empathy. The reason why this is the case is that watching acts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Now characters in Star Trek: TNG routinely show empathetic concern for one another. For instance, when a race of cyborgs capture Jean–Luc Picard (captain of the Enterprise on the show), the crew of the Enterprise do everything in their power to rescue Picard. One of their main motivations for rescuing Picard is their experience of the sense of distress that he experiences while in captivity. This is just one instance where empathy is shown in the program, but it happens on a regular basis. In sum, watching Star Trek: TNG increases our capacity for empathy because the characters regularly display empathy on the show and because we tend to imitate the actions that we see other human beings performing. Someone might object to this argument by pointing out that characters on the show also display cruelty that involves a lack of empathy. For instance, in one episode a malevolent being kills one of the members for the crew for no apparent reason. If we watch this cruelty, then perhaps we ourselves might behave more cruelly. But this objection can be refuted. Cruelty on the show is always shown in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

On May 24, 2006 my husband of twelve years and the father to our six beautiful children was killed by a drunk driver while driving home from work that evening. I would talk to Todd first about our children and how proud he would be of all of them. Noah would be the first child I mentioned, as he was the baby and only six days old when Todd was killed. I would tell him how sweet Noah is and what a kind, loving soul he has. Also, that he is placed in the gifted and talented classes at school. I would talk next about Nathan and how he is so independent and wants to be older then he really. About our daughter Emily and how she made the honors list at college and just finished her first year there. I would tell him about Joshua and that he's in his first year as an electrical apprentice an about Daniel and how he works as a conductor at Norfolk Southern just like him. • 15. The Elephant In Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go The elephant is seen as as the most compassionate creatures on earth. They care for those around them, even if they are not of the same species. Their fellow creatures, humans, aren't as caring. They pick fights, slaughter each other in wars, and even abandon one another for their own survival. In this excerpt from Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go, the author portrays the narrator as concerned while Ruth and the other girls are contrasted as rude and apathetic to reveal how compassion is lacking in the younger generations. The author portrays the narrator as uneasy over Tommy's treatment from the other kids to show how compassion is rare in young people. The narrator and the other girls were crowded around a window waiting for the boys to pull a trick on Tommy. The narrator was unsettled and "searched for signs of disapproval about what the boys were going to do to Tommy" (Ishiguro), but she was only met with a "little laugh" (Ishiguro). The narrator knew something was going to happen to Tommy. She was looking around for someone else to be just as anxious, and no one was. They even laughed a little at the notation of caring about what is about to happen. The narrator was also worried for Tommy because he was wearing his favorite polo and was "playing football in that"(Ishiguro). Tommy's shirt would "get ruined'"(Ishiguro) by the muddy field. Tommy was playing football, a very hands–on game. His favorite shirt was sure to be ruined by the roughness of the other players and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Concept Of Compassion Fatigue State of the Science Paper: Compassion Fatigue Katelyn Anderson Fairleigh Dickinson University A concept can be a word, an abstract or concrete thought, a phrase, or a symbolic statement. "Concepts are formulated in words that enable people to communicate their meanings about realities in the world and give meaning to phenomena that can directly or indirectly be seen, heard, tasted, smelled or touched" (McEwen & Wills, 2014, p. 50). Concepts are the start of an idea, which can lead to a thesis, research development, and eventually cause a change. Concepts are vital for the development of nursing practice and for our patients, so that we can provide the best and most appropriate care. The purpose of this paper is to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This unique concept was identified in 1992 by Carla Joinson, a nurse, who identified compassion fatigue by studying emergency room personnel. It was defined as, "a unique form of burnout that affects individuals in caregiving roles" (Lombardo & Eyre, 2011). In 1995, there were developments within compassion fatigue and the term secondary traumatic stress disorder (STSD) was formed synonymously. The caring and empathetic relationships, which nurses strive to build with their patients, can become overwhelming and have the potential to lead to compassion fatigue. As nurses, we have an innate ability to care for others. Because of this, we find that we have put others before ourselves, which makes for compassionate and empathetic nursing care, but can lead to internal downfalls. There is a shift for the nurse, when providing nurturing care for patients becomes difficult. The downfalls are seen after repeated exposure to stressful work environments, work overload, lack of recognition and the repeated exposure to patients suffering, which nurses attempted to relieve. With advancements in healthcare, prolonging of life, increasing physical and emotional needs from patients and their families and the aging of American, nurses have an increase in stressors and demands. • 21. Rising Strong Sparknotes Book Assignment As I read Rising Strong by Brene Brown it really hit home with me. In her book she talks about something most people do not like to deal with, which is shame and being vulnerable. We all feel shame no matter who we are. Some people take it better than others do. Some people take their shame and burry it deep down inside them and others takes their shame and makes great success stories out of it. Brene Brown talks about how much she struggled with being vulnerable and how she dealt with it. She starts off her book with a long presentation of her book and how we can approach shame. She enlightens us that Rising Strong is regarding getting to the heart of the most excruciating and uncomfortable minutes we 've ever experienced, getting genuine about the path in which those moments have made us feel and being sufficiently striking to consider ourselves responsible to get up and develop from the past as we move into what more there is to come. She likewise focuses on that yes, most definitely, disappointment is excruciating, exceptionally difficult. Tragically be that as it may, the stories of battle to achievement that we 're so regularly told do more than see their way through the pain and make their way to be success stories. Brown states that all we need are, "a critical mass of bad asses who are willing to dare, fall, feel their way through tough emotion, and rise again" (Brown, 2015, p. 30.) • 23. Empathy: Egan And Schroeder Empathy is a key value in the role of the helper and is described one way by Egan and Schroeder as; a personality trait that allows a person to feel what others feel and have the ability to understand other people, from the inside. It is also a state of feeling for others that is situation specific and understanding another person's experiences (Egan and Schroeder, 2009). Egan and Schroeder state empathy is, a basic value that informs and drives all helping behavior and a method of communication that involves three phases, empathic resonance, expressed empathy and received empathy (Egan and Schroeder, 2009). One way empathy is expressed is through active listening and deep interpersonal transactions (Egan and Schroeder, 2009). Through interpersonal interactions, the helper tunes into the client's verbal and nonverbal communication, listening for behaviours and the feelings while acknowledging they are hearing and understanding the client's story. Verbal and nonverbal means of communication can in the form of, body posture and movements, making eye contact, facial expressions and even voice related behaviors such as pitch, spacing of words and even silence. I assume that the literature that is present from hundred years ago until now, displays a shift of religion to nature. Religion used to be the basis for most of the things, but as new ideas approached, nature began to replace it. Not implying that nature completely replaced religion, but it became a new way to understand the world. I believe there is always going to be a debate on which way to understand the world is the best. Religious people would argue that the bible is the guide for lives and the way to control the world, but on the other hand, science also tries to explain this idea. How would it pleased God to see a person die in a desperate manner even if they had sin? God gives us life and would pardon our sins if we seek for him. However, I believe the puritans, including Bradford, felt that there was no option of forgiveness. According to what I have read in Bradford's story, I would say that religion could make someone selfish. I am not against religion, but this is what I conclude based on this literature. I feel this way because it seems that they just think for themselves. They believe they are perfect and that anyone else is evil. I feel that being a religious person, should not make them feel superior like the puritans did. I believe that in God's eye we are all the same, but the puritans saw the Native Americans as savages and not pure. An example of this is in the "first encounter" the puritans had with the so called savages. "Thus it pleased God to vanquish their enemies...and by his special providence so to dispose that not any of them were either hurt or hit..." (79) In my point of view, here is a clear example of how they are being selfish. They are just worried about them not being hurt, but what about the savages? • 27. Lack Of Empathy In American Society Empathy is the ability to understand what another person is feeling (Posick 1). In order to show empathy you must see things from another person's eyes, allowing you to understand and relate to what they are feeling. Naturally for us as humans, it is easier to empathize with others who have been through similar situations or face similar problems as we do. If we as citizens could begin to be more empathic as a whole, we would bring an end to several major problems that we face in our daily lives as Americans, and as people as a whole. There are examples nearly every day of people lacking empathy, which causes them to go to extremes in pursuit of money, power, or acknowledgement, causing them to ruin their lives by making irrational decisions. Some people see religion as a helping hand, something that is meant to do good. Others see it as a negative force used for "evil" and to cause harm. A lot of people have no opinion on the matter whatsoever. One of the main themes in James Agee's novel is religion and the causes of it. In A Death in the Family, the characters are very set in stone with their beliefs. The Skill of Empathy Another important skill in the field of human services would be empathy. In the last two years, I have learned the difference between sympathy and empathy. Sympathy actually separates and isolates individuals, while empathy empowers them. As helpers, we cannot stand on a pedestal reaching down and effectively help others. I believe many of the basic fundamentals of human service, such as confidentiality, empathy, and even antonym, can fall under the umbrella of respect. If I truly respect, another I will not try to force my own agenda, and if I truly respect another, I will keep in confidence the information they have shared. It is generally considered by most readers that the initial chapters don't consist of the religious and spiritual makeup of the townspeople but in fact, religion is subliminally present even earlier, within the title of the novel itself. The word "Death" is integrally and inextricably linked with religious matter. After all, birth and the inevitably of death are the two most important and debatable points in religion. First, Marquez underlines, "Both were exhausted from the barbarous work of death..." (49). Marquez exemplifies the way in which some aspects of religion are ignored and some have great emphasis put on them. When Roman finds out that his new bride is not a virgin, he returns her. She is beaten savagely, and her brothers are called from the brothel to come defend the family's honor. The hypocrisy of family is revealed as they consider honor to be a part of the religion and instead of religiously and peacefully solve the manner, the brothers murder Santiago Nasar. The family believes that upholding the honor is righteous, and in doing so the sin of murdering Nasar is downplayed. Furthermore, when the brothers put down their knives in front of the priest, instead of giving them advice or condemning them, the priest "recalled the surrender as an act of dignity" (49). This is in total conflict with Catholicism as it is amongst the Ten Commandments that "Thou shall not kill" and thus it illustrates that even the priest of the town has lost the knowledge of the true religion. Marquez cements the corruption of religion as even father Amador protected the brothers and not only him but "the lawyer stood by the thesis of homicide in legitimate defense of honor, which was upheld by the court in good faith" (48). Marquez continues to demonstrate that the society was lenient on the brothers due to tradition and thus it illustrates that religion was only a minor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hospitality is something that can be seen everywhere, regardless of geographical location, religion, etc. This initially sparked my interest because hospitality is something does not require anything special to do. Everywhere a person goes, hospitality can be seen in some way, shape, or form. The Madonna of 115th Street is an amazing example of hospitality throughout history. The excerpt details the days and nights of the Festa. On July 16th, the great bell in the campanile of the church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel announces that the festa had begun. This fetsa unites several Italian communities from those in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and California. Preparation for this festival can take weeks at a time, houses are cleaned from head to toe in anticipation of housing relatives visiting from other states. For the next few weeks the community gathers together in the streets and celebrates greatly from sunrise to sunset. When you put yourself in someone's shoes, you start to understand where they are coming from. Which will avoid arguments and turmoil in that relationship. As for nations, that can be a great way to avoid wars. Empathy gives people the chance to help others because it gives them a clear understanding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. Essay on Religious Concerns during Colonial Period "Throughout the colonial period, economic concerns had more to do with the settling of British North America than did religious concerns." According to this statement, both economic and religious reasons contributed to the founding of the thirteen colonies by the British in North America. The many people who settled in New England came there in search of religious freedom. Their hope was to escape the religious persecution they were facing in England, worship freely, and have the opportunity to choose which religion they wanted to take part in. The Southern colonies were developed for economic motives. They had goals for mercantilism and increasing the prosperity of England. Finally, the Middle colonies were founded upon diverse ... During the reign of James I, a small group of these humble country folk left for Leyden, Holland, where they were allowed to practice their religion as they wished. Some years later, a part of this Leyden congregation decided to immigrate to the New World where, in 1620, they founded the "Pilgrim" colony of Plymouth. Soon after Charles I ascended to the throne in 1625, Puritan leaders in England were subjected to what they viewed as increasing persecution. Several ministers, who were no longer allowed to preach, gathered their flocks about them and followed the Pilgrims to America. Unlike the earlier immigrants, however, this second group, which established the Massachusetts Bay colony in 1630, included many people of substantial wealth and position. Within the next decade, a Puritan stamp had been placed upon more than a half–dozen English colonies. Pennsylvania was also founded for the sole purpose of religion, but unlike the other colonies, it began to increase toleration of religious diversity later on in the progression of its settlement. King Charles owed William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, a favor. Penn asked the King for some land in the colonies, and in return the King gave Penn a piece of the woods (Sylvania) in the New World. William Penn, who was a Quaker, created a place where everyone was free to worship God in his or her own way. Yet another colony established for religious purposes was ... • 64. Religion Affects Daily Life How does Religion Affect Daily Lives? " The purpose of religion is to control yourself, not to criticise others."– Dalai Lama. Religion is not something people blindly follow for the hope of reaching heaven. At one point or another in life, every person encounters the moment where they make the decision of being an active religious person, a religious person but don't attend church, or don't believe in a superior power. Whether a person chooses option one, two, or three, each choice brings consequences and a different life with that choice. People live a different kind of life, with different goals to reach, and what kind of life a person may want to live. Religion has a profound effect on people's daily lives, and the areas it affects are work life, family life, and the standards a person holds. Work Life It happens to everyone, people are at work (or school) and have a project due on Monday, but they see the clock ticking closer and closer to 5pm, and have that urge to slip out a few mins early so they can get ahead of schedule on ordering the wings and pizza and getting good movie tickets. The consequence of doing this is the person having to choose whether to finish the project on Saturday, Sunday, or if the person really wants to push it, Monday morning. So what option are you going to take? Work Smarter, Not Harder Full time committed religious people know the regular weekend schedule. Saturday is the day to sleep in, cook some good breakfast, and take the kids ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

IASB Conceptual Framework To, Hans Hoogervorst IASB Chairman London, UK Date: Nov 11, 2017 Dear Sir, I am writing this report in order to outline one change that I believe needs to be made to the Conceptual Framework. I have attached the report that details the change and the rationale for the change for your kind consideration. Thanking You, Sincerely, Your Name, Student, Name of University Course Name Introduction The IASB conceptual framework is a framework of theories prepared by a standard setting body aimed t dealing with practical problems faced by users of financial statements; the characteristics of accounting information; the elements of financial statements and concepts for measuring and reporting the elements such as assets and liabilities (Financial Times 2017). The benefit is that uniform accounting standards can be applied to deal with common accounting problems; have fewer standards to reduce the volume of standards; help accountants and auditors to resolve accounting issues. However one of the issues is the going concern assumption, which does not appear to take into account more serious risks that an enterprise may be associated with such as sustainability risks. The problem/Change One of the problems with the conceptual framework is that it does not address the principle of sustainability within its going concern assumption even in the recent Summary of Tentative Decisions related to the framework (IFRS 2017). Therefore it is proposed that the conceptual framework

  • 69. Empathy In Nursing "Empathy is a respectful understanding of what others are experiencing. Instead of offering empathy, we often have a strong urge to give advice or reassurance and to explain our own position or feeling. Empathy, however, calls upon us to empty our mind and listen to others with our whole being," said by Marshall Rosenberg. As a nurse it is a part of your duties to incorporate empathy in the patient care. Nurses care for multiple patients and need to tend to each individual's needs in order to improve the quality of care. Empathy is an essential intellectual trait that opposes intellectual narrow–mindedness. Intellectual empathy is essential in understanding the patients, being able to communicate with the patients, and being able to provide ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Adults And The Influence Of Empathy In Adults As with many other skills, empathy is a learned skill that requires an awareness that other people think, feel, and behave in ways that are both similar and different from one's self, or put simply, being able to relate to and understand what another person is experiencing or feeling (McDonald & Messinger, 2011). One of the first experiences that people have with empathy frequently appears as a baby when we hear another infant cry (Szalavitz, 2010). Other research has shown that infants not only favor adults who appear to be more helpful, but they also tend to offer voluntary help to adults who appear to be having difficulties when reaching for something (Szalavitz, 2010). Therefore, according to this research, it might be suggested that whether ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Developing Compassion Essay a merciless event, it is selfish without even realizing it. Doing good deeds does not make us a good individual, it just makes us decent. The benefits of generosity for both our physical and mental health are outstanding. generosity reduces stress, supports one's physical health, enhances one's sense of purpose, and helps fight depression, it has also been shown to increase one's lifespan because all the health benefits of not being stressed. You may think you are being selfless, but you are also benefiting yourself in a way you did not know about. Developing compassion increases our happiness. In an experiment published in Science by Harvard Business School professor Michael Norton, they gave money to; two sets of groups, one that spent money on themselves and the other spent it on other people. It was found that the people who bought presents for others showed an increase in happiness, this was even the case with children giving treats to others. We are using an unselfish event and making for an ego boost. However, by doing so we need to become conscious of the world around us. As we develop more of an awareness we become more concerned about what is going on around us. Therefore, we carry guilt for simple things like throwing a cigarette on the ground, we may feel guilty for a bit, but we can always change our actions and help the world around us. Compassion is simple and uses common sense, it is humble and straightforward. Being compassionate is difficult for those who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Empathy Research Papers Empathy is defined as feeling for others and as the ability to understand the feelings, pains, or hardships of others as if they were your own. While some believe that empathy is a choice and can be manipulated by what we think about people from a certain, race, nationality, or group, others think that it is part of a person's personality, and is hard to change. Despite these differences in opinions, one thing is very clear. Empathy has many benefits that can help a person succeed in their academics, business, and or life. One of the main places where empathy comes into play is in school. • 77. Figley's Model Of The Compassion Fatigue Process Lipchick (2002), describes the therapist–client relationship as a structure coupling between to unique human beings in complementary roles. In a healthcare context, Sabo (2006) states that empathy and compassion are critical aspects involved in understanding the clients' needs to create a therapeutic relationship between client and nurse. The integration of the concepts of compassion and empathy could become a negative facilitator of 'the cost of caring for others' later described as Compassion Fatigue (CF) (Figley, 1995). The definition is contested, though; the first definition was proposed by Joinson (1992) characterising CF as a unique form of burnout that nurses experience because of exhaustion. Coetzee and Klopper (2010) explain that CF is a concept established in relation to the burnout of nurses'. Their duty to tend to sick and traumatised patients exposes them to pain and suffering daily, and thus many lose their ability to nurture. Supported by Pack and Roberts (2012), CF occurs when individuals are unable to continue bearing the trauma of others, consequently leading to a significant reduction in wellbeing and work capacity. Whilst CF has regularly been observed in a healthcare environment, no such research has been conducted in a sport and exercise context. Figley's (2002) model of the Compassion Fatigue Process enables a further understanding of the factors contributing to CF and some key terms surrounding it. The model is based on assumptions that empathy and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 79. Tartuffe, Religion Essay The context surrounding the period in which Tartuffe was written in, the 17th Century is remembered as being a time of extreme power for the French Monarchy. King Louis XIV and Cardinal Richelieu transformed France's feudal monarchy to an absolute monarchy. What must also be noted about this time is the fact that the Catholic Church and Politicians had a great deal of power over authors and playwrights. In this time of social and religious persecution, Molière created Tartuffe , a comedy dealing with hypocrisy and to a great extent, religion and how religion can be used in a negative way, to mask sin. The play is known to be offensive towards the Catholic Church and religion in general. When it was first performed in 1664, it was censored, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He is at the beginning of the play seen as a God like figure, particularly to Orgon and Madame Pernelle, by this he is strong and inspirational, however, when he does realises he has been found out for being in the wrong, his persona changes to guilty and even vulnerable. This is shown in Act III scene 6 when Damis accuses Tartuffe of trying to seduce Elmire, Tartuffe uses reverse psychology to win Orgon over by confessing the all things awful, to an extent in which Orgon begins to sympathise with him. It is clearly shown that Tartuffe goes to the absolute extreme when he apologises to Orgon; Oui mon frère, je suis un méchant, un coupable, Un malheureux pécheur tout pleine iniquité, Les plus grand scélérat qui jamais ait été; Chaque instant de ma vie est change de souillures; Elle n'est qu'un amas de crimes et d'ordures; Et je vois que le ciel, pour ma punition, Me veut mortifier en cette occasion. The language used is extremely depressing, almost showing that it is out of character for Tartuffe to do such a thing, he just feels that he should confess as he is under Orgon's roof and shouldn't make his son out to be a liar. This is what Orgon believes, and although the audience knows differently, Damis is still asked to leave Orgon's house, showing Orgon, a very religious man, being completely hypocritical, as he is undermining his family. In addition, I asked his mother Nicole G questions that Terrance did not know the answer to. The interview took place in the living room of their home Saturday afternoon. I spent an hour observing the participant. Terrance is a 15 year old, American Black male. He is 5'9 ft tall in height, thin built, shadow facial hair above his lip. Also, he speaks with a deep voice due to the changes that adolescence occur at that age. His hair was neatly trimmed and he was casually dressed in sweats and t–shirt. During the observation, I noticed how well spoken and articulate he answered my questions. He gave eye to eye contact when answering questions. He was confident but only gave short answers. He kept looking at the clock because he was ready to play his PlayStation. Terrence G. comes from a single family household. He is the oldest of seven ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
