Corn Laws Chartism
Tension started when the Corn Laws were enforced in 1815, this imposed restrictions and tariffs on imported grain, corn, flour, and meal. The Corn
Laws were designed by conservatives to keep grain prices high to favor domestic producers thus, food prices rose and riots throughout the city of
London began to break out. The Corn Laws enhanced the profits and political power associated with landownership. The government directly regulated
the import and export of grain, making it more expensive to produce and trade grains grown by local farmers. In 1839, the Anti–Corn Law League was
established to fight against England's Corn Laws. The league mobilized the industrial middle classes against the landlords. During the grain shortage
caused by Britain growing population and the blockades imposed by the Napoleonic Wars, the Corn Laws were repealed in 1846. The Reform Act of
1832 was an Act of Parliament that introduced a wide range of changes to the electoral system of England and Wales. The act disenfranchised 56
boroughs in England and Wales and reduced another 31 to only one MP. The act also created 67 new constituencies, this broaden the franchise's

This movement aimed to gain political rights and influence for working class citizens. The Chartist movement is known to be the first mass
movement driven by the working classes. It grew in popularity following the failure of the Reform Act of 1832, which extended the vote to citizens
who owned property. In 1838 William Lovett and Francis Place drew up a People's Charter for the London Working Men's Association. The Charter
had six demands; all men should have the right to vote, voting should take place by secret ballot, there should be parliamentary elections every year,
constituencies should be equal of size, members of Parliament should be paid, and property qualification for becoming a member of Parliament should

Who Invented The Flour Industry
What did you have for breakfast this morning? Was it cereal or toast these items and many more contain flour. Without the help of the flour industry
you probably wouldn't of been able to eat those items. The flour industry has been around for many years. It's a big part of history and still plays a
very important role. The flour industry started at least two hundred years ago. The flour industry is still very important today.
The start of the flour industry was very small. However the reason the flour industry was very small was that it was just the beginning of it, and
many people did not know how profitable it would be. Another reason it was so small was that many people did not know if it was going to be a
waste of money, because it was very expensive to pay for everything. In order to make this a successful industry the flour industry would need many
employees such as farmers, railroad workers, machinists who tended to the large machines, barrel makers, packers who caught flour after it was poured
off of the assembly line. Without enough farmers selling wheat to the flour companies or them having farmers that worked there they didn't have as
much wheat to make the flour. Which meant for the flour companies less flour was able to be made.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another thing that happened in the late 1800s was that Charles Pillsbury bought a failing flour company with the help of his uncle. They didn't know
how this would turn out in the end, years later the company was sold but Charles still helped with it. In fact at the time buying or starting a flour
company probably wasn't the best decision to make, especially if you didn't have a bunch of money. A big thing that happened to many companies was
that many people were dying because of the machines, fires, and

Problems of the Food System Essay
We live in an age in which we have come to expect everything to be instantaneously at our fingertips. We live in an age of instant coffee, instant tea,
and even instant mashed potatoes. We can walk down the street at 5 in the morning and get a gallon of milk or even a weeks worth of groceries at our
discretion. Even though it is great that food is now readily available at all times, this convenience comes at a price, for both the producer and the
consumer. Farmers are cheated out of money and are slaves to big business, workers and animals are mistreated. And, because food now comes at a low
cost, it has become cheaper quality and therefore potentially dangerous to the consumer's health. These problems surrounding the ethics and the ... Show

Additionally, big business controls the farmers by capitalizing on widely used commodities. For example, the company Monsanto which is based
in St. Louis, Missouri protects its dominance over the genetically modified crops such as the soy bean with the use of a patent law. Because of
this, Monsanto's patented genes "account for 95 percent of all soy beans and 80 percent of all corn grown in the U.S.," (Associated Press).
Although genetically modifying the soy bean crop has made it more readily available and more sustainable, this comes at a high price to farmers.
Monsanto continues to raise their prices, which forces farmers to accrue even more debt, and there is no sign of the rise in the seed prices stopping.
Since a lot of the farmers are under contract with Monsanto, there is nothing they can do about this unethical policy in fear of losing their job. If you
think being a farmer is bad, try working in a slaughter house. "Knocker, Sticker, Shackler, Rumper, First Legger, Knuckle Dropper," these are just a
few of the positions the workers at a slaughterhouse get assigned to. Simply reading the names of the above job positions induces a sense of nausea and
hints at the inherent brutality that these positions demand (Schlosser, 172). Because the weight and size of cows are unpredictable, most of the labor in
the slaughterhouse must be done by hand. On the kill floor of a slaughterhouse,

The American Reaction to Richard Cobden: An Economy of...
Introduction Though Anglo–American relations are not currently hostile, they were not always this way. This paper will explore the free trade beliefs
of Richard Cobden, and show that Americans who rejected his ideas did so out of ignorance and fear. The paper will begin with a description of
Cobden's context and beliefs and then move to an analysis of American Anglophobia and Anglomania and governmental responses to Cobden. Context
Trade liberalization in Great Britain signaled an era of intense change in the European economy. The document that triggered this change was the
Cobden–Chevalier Treaty of 1860. Anglo–French trade antagonisms had reached an agonizing level for the two countries, beginning with the Congress
of Vienna and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Later, in the same speech, he stated that the goal of the League was not to simply have cheap corn, but to have corn "follow the same law which the
monopolists in food admit that labor must follow; that 'it shall find its natural level in the markets of the world'" (Bullock & Shock, 1957). Cobden also
believed that military spending, instead of aiding growth, prevented markets from operating as they could if more money was available for private
investment (Stringham, 2004). He believed that market interaction was the most influential factor in the success of the most powerful nations and that
Britain should lower its military spending if it wanted to compete in the global market. In 1996, Knight, Loayza, and Villanueva conducted a study
which confirmed Cobden's beliefs, concluding that "military spending retards economic growth; namely, through crowding out human capital
investment and fostering the adoption of various types of trade restrictions" (as cited in Stringham, 2004, p. 108). Though this study–and others like
it–came much later than Cobden's time, he planted the seed of doubt in many citizens' minds about what they had previously seen as the benefits of
military growth. Ironically, Cobden viewed the U.S. as a threat to Britain's economic influence. The U.S. had lower taxes and less military spending
(which would eventually rise with the two World Wars) and attributed the country's sudden economic rise

A Short Story : A Story?
"When will that dumb bell ring?" Kenzi thought to herself. She was sitting half off her seat to get a head start to her car. Her and her friends were
supposed to go to a corn maze after school and she knew she couldn't be late. She jumped out of her seat as soon as the bell rang. "Kenzi!" Kenzi
swept her head quickly around to see Malachi pushing past everyone to get to her. She smiled and acted like she didn't see him and turned around.
Malachi sighed and kept pushing past past until he reached her. "Hey Kenz." Malachi said with a huge smile. Kenzi turned back around still smiling.
"Going to the corn maze today?" The smile still hadn't disappeared from his face. "Why wouldn't I?" Kenzi teased. "Well see you then I guess." He
chuckled and walked away. Kenzi sprung into her car and hurled her backpack into the passenger seat. She started the car and started to drive. She
pulled into the parking lot quickly swerving to avoid a car parked on the side of the road. Kenzi slowed down and looked over at the car startled to
find a scarecrow sitting in the driver's seat. She could've sworn she saw the head turn but she drove past too fast to notice. She tried not to think much
of it while she searched for a parking spot. It was probably a dumb joke, right? She thought to herself. A couple minutes later she found a parking spot
and smiled as her friend Cassidy rushed over the hug her as she got out. "Kenzi! What took you so long?" She said and hauled her into a hug.

Corn Law Dbq
The Corn Law grew into powerful political impact. It was used to attack the government by registering voters in by–elections or "general election" (p.
358). The Corn Laws were import tariffs designed to help protect grain prices in Great Britain and Ireland against competition from the less
expensive foreign imports coming in; in the late18th century and early 19th century. But this still didn't solve the problem of high prices of other
foods. This law was supported by conservative land owners and workers but during the crisis of the "Irish Potato Famine", Peel took advantage to
repeal the Corn Laws. Many of the other Members of Parliament were for these laws and didn't want to get rid of them but many did want to abolish
them. Peel introduced

Repeal Of The Corn Laws Dbq
The repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846 was one of the most momentous events in Britain's nineteenth century economic history. It moved the country
toward free trade, and caused a formal brake up of the Tory party. The Corn Laws were passed in 1815 under Liverpool's Tory ministry, they placed
tariffs on the importation of corn, a commodity of the time that denotes all types of grain. The powerful landowners wanted to be protected from
the falling grain prices after the Napoleonic War, as well as from foreign competition, so consumers were forced to pay higher prices on grain. The
Anti Corn Law League was a political movement formed in 1838 that wanted the repeal of the Corm Laws in order to move toward free trade. In
1846 Robert Peel split with... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Peel was resistant to a new administration lead by Earl Grey, and he argued against parliamentary reform. Nevertheless, the Reform Act was
passed in 1832. Earl Grey's Whig government was discharged by William IV in 1834 and Peel was appointed as the Prime Minister. In the
Tamworth Manifesto Peel was supportive of the Reform Act which was a shift that showed his acceptance of a more enlightened Conservatism.
Even though the Peelite Tories were in power they remained as a minority in the House of Commons. This lead to to his resignation in 1835. Peel
returned and on August 24, 1841 Peel stated "If I could be induced to believe that an alteration in the Corn Laws would be an effectual remedy for
those distressed [of the poor], I would be the first step forward, and ...I would earnestly advise a relaxation and alteration, – nay, if necessary, a repeal
of the Corn Laws" (Peel). This is stating that Peel's dedication to protectionism was limited rather than absolute. Peel was not finished and in 1841 he
formed a Conservative administration which oversaw many significant pieces of legislation. The most challenging and significant one being his
attempt to repeal the Corm Laws. This was prompted by the Great Potato Famine in Ireland because Britain needed to free up more food to give to
Ireland. Landowners were very resistant in the House of Commons because they believed that it was a direct attack on

Distilled Water Egg Hypothesis
The 3 hypotheses created by the students, which are as follows, were put to the test during this lab. If an egg is submerged in distilled water, then
the egg will expand in size. If an egg is submerged in corn syrup, then the egg will shrivel. If an egg is submerged in a salt solution, then the egg
will shrivel. The hypothesis concerning the egg submerged in distilled water, was supported. The egg grew by 2.5 cm and weighed 12.5 grams more
than it did in the beginning. The hypothesis concerning the egg being submerged in the corn syrup was also supported. The egg shrunk down to a
significant size, the egg ended up being 22.42 grams lighter and a cm smaller than it's original measurements. The last hypothesis, the one using salt
water, was refuted. The students said the egg would shrink, like the corn syrup, when in reality it grew like the distilled water egg, in the end it had
13.19 extra grams and 2 cm that weren't present in the beginning. With two of three hypotheses supported, the students learned a great deal about
diffusion and osmosis. The eggs in the distilled water and salt water went through osmosis, in which the water is transferred through the egg's ... Show

things can't be processed and the body fills with excess fluid. Kidney Dialysis is a treatment for kidney failure that allows everything to be filtered

Lab Report On Dicytatis In Osmosis
Introduction The purpose of this lab is to determine how the egg changes when it was in different substances which were distilled water and corn
syrup. The reason the eggs change in size is because of osmosis. Osmosis is a form of facilitated diffusion when water moves through channels, water
is moving from high to low. There are three types of solutions, isotonic, hypertonic and hypotonic. When theegg is placed in an isotonic solution the
egg will stay the same size. Isotonic is when the concentration of water is the same outside and inside the cell and water moves equally in both
directions. When an egg is placed in hypertonic solution the egg will grow because hypertonic is when the concentration of water is higher outside the
cell than inside. When an egg is placed in a hypertonic solution the egg will shrink because hypertonic is when the concentration of water is higher
outside the cell than inside the cell.
Osmosis can happen when salt is put on a slug. The salt will take all moisture out of the slug, because there is more water inside the cell than out.
Therefore the slug will lose more fluid than it can tolerate so it will become dehydrated and die ("Why Slugs Hate Salt").The hypothesis for corn
syrup is if the egg is placed in corn syrup than the egg will become smaller because the corn syrup is thick so it has little water which causes it to
shrink. The hypothesis for distilled water is if the egg is placed in distilled water then it will get bigger because the water will cause the egg to expand.

Britain's Expansion Of The Corn Laws
During 1815, Britain introduced the Corn Laws which allowed the Colonies to trade with Britain at very low tariffs. The Corn Laws made tariffs
increase from other places trading with Britain, especially the United States. This benefited Britain because trade from places other than the colonies
would come into Britain with higher tariffs. This heightened the profit Britain made from international trade. In 1846, Britain stopped the Corn Laws
because places other than the colonies had either stopped trading with Britain or had traded less with Britain because of the increased tariffs. This led
to declining resources, such as food, which led to famine. This problem led to the Free Trade. Free Trade allowed everyone to trade with Britain without

Creative Story : A Short Story
Once upon a time, long ago, there was a boy named Jack. He lived with his mother on an old farm and was extremely poor.
One day, Jack couldn't fall asleep, so he asked his mother, "How did we end up so poor?"
His mother sighed and answered. "We were incredibly rich when you're father was alive. When he died, we lost all our money." Jack realized this
was an opportunity to learn more about his father. Ordinarily, Jack's mother refused to talk about his father. "How did he die?" Jack asked.
Jack's mother's face fell when she heard the question. "A giant came out of the sky and took him away, I haven't seen him since then."
Jack was as silent as a statue for a few seconds as he processed the information. Suddenly, his eyes lit up, and he smiled from ear to ear. His mother
stared at him, confused. "Why are you so happy?" She asked.
Jack looked at his mother still smiling. "Was my father dead when the giant took him away?" he questioned.
Jack's mother shook her head. "He wasn't when they took him away, but surely the giant killed him as soon as he brought him home."
"There's a chance he's still alive." Jack responded, his words dripping with hope.
The next day, Jack went to Milky White, the cow that kept them alive by producing milk for them to sell and drink. But today something was strange,
the pail that usually holds the Milky White's milk was empty. Milky White did not produce any milk today! When Jack delivered the news to his
mother, she frowned and told him to take Milky White to the butcher to make a trade. Jack hesitated for a second and then decided to do what his
mother told him and began his walk to the butcher's shop.
When he arrived, the butcher looked at Milky White and said,"What do you want for the cow?"
Jack took a moment to look around and decided he wanted to trade for a chicken. He told the butcher, and the butcher brought out a chicken.
"This one's the last one I have." announced the butcher pointing at the chicken. "This chicken is quite strange. It's not like any of the other chickens
I've had.
Jack examined the chicken, " I think it looks all right." Jack replied and decided to bring the chicken home.

Essay on Justification of the Corn Laws
Justification of the Corn Laws The Corn Law was a potentially dangerous bill introduced in 1815 after three years of good harvests. It was instigated
with the support of Lord Liverpool the current Prime Minister who saw the Corn Laws as a temporary measure to create stability in the agricultural
sector in the immediate post–war years. The Corn Laws were potentially disastrous because they, along with the abolishment of Income tax and the
creation of the Game laws, were seen as a return by the ultra–Tory's to a single–issue, single class government. That issue being the wants and needs of
the landed classes. I believe that the Corn Laws led large groups of the urbanised population to become... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Napoleonic was showed the importance of the British island being able to support itself during periods when it could not rely on its European
neighbours for food. The Corn Laws protected the security of Britain because it allowed Britain to continue to survive under long intense periods of
isolation. Liverpool introduced this law partly as a security net after the problems that Britain had faced in the Napoleonic war. If Britain ever faced
a determined maritime blockade then Britain would have starved to a considerably worse extent than it suffered in the immediate aftermath of the
introduction of the Corn Laws. In the increased period of radical feelings that followed the end of the Loyalist safety net that had stood the war
governments so well. The British Government and Lord Liverpool were well aware of the fragmentation of the French aristocracy that had led to
there downfall in 1789. Liverpool was well aware that he had a choice to make between the aristocracy and the working class to stabilise the country.
His background, the cabinet and his Party that was going through a period of Ultra–Toryism always meant that the party seemed to be siding with the
Landowners and aristocracy. This sturdy combination, which had done so well under Pitt in fending of revolutionary actions, needed

Kellogg's – An Introduction
Started in February 1906, with just 44 employees, Kellogg's is a Battle Creek, Michigan–based multinational food manufacturing company. As of
Match 31, 2012, Kellogg's had a turnover of over $14.2 billion and employed close to 31,000 people. It is the world's largest producer of cereal as
well as crackers, cookies, toaster pastries etc. Currently, Kellogg's products are manufactured in 35 countries and sold in over 180 countries across the

To tackle this, it undertook the following steps:
1.In order to gain more market share, Kellogg's decided to launch two highly successful brands internationally–Chocos in 1996 and Frosties in 1997 in
India. Both of the brands were very successful and sales picked up significantly. It also started providing its offering in retail packs of different sizes.
This enabled the company to cater the needs of different individuals.
2.Leveraging on the success of Chocos that the company decided to expand the brand by foraying in to the cereal biscuit area with the launch of
Chocos Cereal Biscuits. Kellogg's started concentrating on establishing its brand name in the market irrespective of the off take. The focus was
entirely on being present and visible on the retail shelves with a wide range of products.

Viscosity Lab Essay
Viscosity Science Lab
Purpose:
To determine of changing the viscosity will affect the time it takes for a marble to flow through a liquid.
Hypothesis: If a marble is dropped into dish soap and corn syrup, than I predict that the marble in the dish soap will travel faster than the marble in the
corn syrup because I know that the viscosity of the corn syrup is thicker than then the viscosity of the dish soap. Also, the particles in the corn syrup
are more compact than those in the dish soap. This makes the marble sink faster in the dish soap than the corn syrup.
Apparatus: * 2 identical marbles * 250 Graduated Cylinders of 250mL * 250mL of dish soap * 250mL of corn syrup * 1 timer/stopwatch
Procedure: 1. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is very difficult for large particles to move past each other unlike small, tiny particles, like those in the dish soap. The particles in the dish soap are
very small and can move more freely and quickly. In the dish soap, the particles are very small and can move past each other easily when compared to
the particles in the corn syrup. Another reason also contributed to the result of this experiment. Attraction. Some types of particles tend to attract more
than others and that is exactly what happened in the corn syrup. The particles in the corn syrup attracted more than the dish soap. The large particles in
the corn syrup held tightly to each other, that when the marble fell in that it made it hard for the marble to pass through more than one particle at a
time. IN the dish soap, the particles did not attract as much as the corn syrup which let the marble move easily and quickly through the liquid. The
strength of attraction as well as the particle size is important in determining a fluid's viscosity.
Application:
This viscosity experiment can be used in real–life when making sun–tan lotion as well as other cosmetic products. It is important for the lotion to be
viscous because the lotion could not be applied and spread around the body if the cream was not viscous enough to suit its use. It would drip all over

Cornstarch Research Paper
Cornstarch Cornstarch is a fine, powdery starch that is made out of corn. The cornstarch is actually made from the endosperm of the corn, which
makes up most of the kernels that we eat when enjoying popcorn or corn on the cob. Cornstarch, also sometimes called cornflour, is produced by
grinding, washing and drying the endosperm of the corn until it reaches that fine, powdery state. Cornstarch is gluten free. Cornstarch has many
culinary uses, but it is most often used as a thickener for sauces, gravies and fruit pie fillings. Cornstarch thickens very quickly and easily, and forms
a clear sauce after cooking, rather than an opaque one. It has roughly twice the thickening power of flour, and while it is flavorless after cooking, it does

First of all, Indians prefer hot milk compared to cold milk. At the point when the Kellogg's flakes are blended with hot milk, they ended up being

Thanksgivings: A Narrative Fiction
For the past few Thanksgivings Sam and Dean had kept it simple. Y'know, kick their feet up and enjoy a few beers, reminiscent of old friends. If Dean
was lucky Sam would even go and buy a pie. He liked it that way. Sure it was simple and low key but he liked simple.
Things had changed since last year though. After Cas had gotten possessed Dean confessed his feelings as a last ditch effort to get him to expel
Lucifer. It had worked, thank god. They were together now and things had taken on a much more chick flick rom com feel than Dean thought he
would've liked. But as much as he denies it when Sam teases him, he loves it. That wasn't even the most odd thing about the scenario, there mom was

Sam finds them an hour later asleep in front of the stove. Hands interlocked, they're breathing slow and heads rested against one another. Sam stealthily
takes a picture before opening the oven to find a burnt pecan pie practically boiling in the oven.
"Always loved burnt diabetes," Sam says to himself. He grabs the oven mits and takes it out. Pecan pie goo syrup stuff has dripped onto the base of
the oven and now burns like overcooked caramel. Sam scrunches his nose at the smell and closes the oven. He'll clean it later.

Dean and Cas wakeup the next morning spirits high and backs sore from resting against the cabinet. Dean looks at Cas groggily smiles. Then he

"Oh, god the pie. How has this place not burnt down? Why don't I smell smoke?" He launches upwards only to see the oven off, the bunker unburnt
(with a lingering smell of smoke though), and a burnt pecan pie resting on the counter. The crust is charred just a little to brown and the pecans have
separated and the goo has overflown making the side of the pan

Case Study Of Kellobits
Old habits die hard, especially when it comes to Indian eating habits. When Kellogg India Ltd. (Kellogg's), the wholly owned subsidiary of the US$
7–billion Kellogg Company, entered the 3000– ton cereal market in 1994, little did it realize the importance of the adage. It had a clear game plan to
position itself on the health platform, highlighting the nutritional values of the brand.
The journey from 1994 to present, 2011 has been full of large scale Up's and Down's.

Meanwhile, negative media coverage regarding the products increased, as more and more consumers were reportedly rejecting the taste. Converting
the experimenters into regular buyers had become a major problem for the company. Realising that a major reason for Kellogg's failure was the fact
that the taste of its products did not suit Indian breakfast habits, it came up with the idea of Indianisation of the taste. Kellogg decided to launch two of

In the Declaration of Independence it states, "mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable,..." and on October 8th, 2016 this
became true. This day was not only the start of my suffering, but tons of other people's too. It was around 7 o 'clock p.m. when a group of my
friends and I decided that we needed to come together and go out, and what better is there to do in early October than visit a corn maze. After nearly an
hour of planning around all ten people 's schedules, we decided we would leave around nine to arrive there during the scariest hours of night. We all

It was a brilliant idea not to put me in front because my sense of direction is about as clear as a blind bats. I'm also not the type of person to bring to a
corn maze, I was scared each time a person jumped out or I heard a rustling in the distance. The air surrounding me was musty and smoky. There
was a strange, eerie feeling as we made our way out of the maze. In the distance we could see a large trampoline and no one wanted to pass up that
opportunity. We raced all the way to the large bouncy giant just to find out they were closed. Confused, we looked at our phones to check the time
and then it all made sense, it was 11:30. Now, we started the mile hike back to the car. My feet were aching from walking through the maze so I asked
if we could take a small break. Right as we stopped walking my phone started ringing. Confusion fell over me as I looked down to see my friend
Lauren's name pop up on the screen. I answered with a perplexed, "Hello?".
On the other end of the phone there were muffled sobs she tried talking, but all I could hear was gibberish. I tried to comfort her so she could calm
down so she could tell me what was going on. Seconds later she murmured, "He 's dead, Derek is dead." At this point I was so lost, in my state of
panic, I couldn 't figure out who Derek was and what could have possibly happened to him.

The Law Of The Corn Laws
Another way in which a comparison of the two thinkers can be given with respect to the Corn Laws is through their positioning on the issue of Say's
Law. To introduce this concept, Jean–Baptiste Say developed the Law of Markets, which is commonly referred to as Say's Law, in his A Treatise on
Political Economy. He maintains that in order to consume, one must provide supplies for another's demand in order to earn a unit of account to
consume goods, meaning a consumer must also be a producer (Say, I.XV.133). Therefore, the economy is a constant cycle of production, proving that
supply creates its own demand. Because of this implication, Say's Law can be viewed in relation to the Corn Laws as the law implies both that an
economy will equilibrate without a need for government intervention and that free trade is non–distortionary. Knowing this, it becomes evident that the
law was supported by Ricardo, albeit implicitly, and explicitly rejected by Malthus. This section will therefore more indepthly move through the two
thinker's opinions on the law to prove their stance on the greater issue of the Corn Laws.
Malthus disagrees with Say's Law, as it oversimplifies the nuance of the economy through its failure to account for the insufficiency of demand coupled
with overproduction. The main argument about the insufficiency of demand is brought about by the expenditure of the different social classes. The
insufficiency of demand he notes makes up his glut theory. For Malthus,

The Maize Maze
Diego Villada–Youel
As I crawled in the back of my dad's truck, ready to go to the corn maze, my stomach felt like it had a hundred butterflies were trying to get out.
About halfway to the corn maze my stomach felt like the butterflies that we're trying to storm out had ten babies each, that we're now trying to burst
out like fireworks. I could taste the dirt under my nails when I was chewing them due to the tizzy feeling I had about what was going to happen in the
maze.
Finally, after what felt like a week before I arrived to the farm we hopped in line to buy tickets for the maze. I heard screams coming from the maze
and the butterflies flew away, but, pigeons took their place and I felt like puking. I heard people, coming out of the maze talking about their favorite
parts. One of them announced their favorite was when she was chased by the man with a chainsaw. Just the thought of being chased made me want to
curl up in a ball, find a nice hiding place and never come out. On the other hand, I undoubtedly wanted to mosey through the maze, to show my brother
and sister that I could make it through the maze and not appear as scared as them.
After getting our tickets, we hopped in line for the maze. In the rear of the line, we talked and took pictures. There were about twenty people in front
of us, but, In no time we were at the front of the line. As soon as our tickets were checked, we walked into the maze and it smelled like hay and corn.

Omnivore's Dilemma By Michael Pollan
Michael Pollan is the author of several New York Times bestseller books including the Omnivore's Dilemma. He is a professor of journalism at UC
Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Michael Pollan's perspective on food is that we should know what is in it and where it comes from, who
grows it and how. The theme of this book is the industrial revolution for food. Its purpose is to make awareness that our food is getting its energy from
our resources. Michael Pollan's goal with the omnivore's dilemma was to shed light on the way we eat now by telling stories about how we ate then

Michael refers to the supermarket as a landscape where all species derived from the single crop of corn. Michael tells a story about a corn field in Iowa
where the farm had been passed down to the family and was quiet successful back in the day. George's crop in inedible they are fed to livestock so
shipped to factories to be processed. His family survives from the income of his wife who works for a social services agency. The supply of corn
has greatly surpassed the demand and therefore alternative decisions must be made as to where the corn will go which is why it is fed to cattle and
other livestock. This is Pollan's way of tracing the steps of the industrial food chain. Since corn is produced so cheaply using synthetic nitrogen which
creates a dependency on our fossil fuel resources rather than our solar resource. The Feedlot method has produced more issues than solutions. Yes, it
does result in fattening cattle quicker which in term then produces faster meat but it results in manure that is extremely high in concentration of
phosphorous and nitrogen that cannot be used as fertilizer to regenerate nutrients in the soil. If the soil cannot be regenerated cattle must be moved
which leads to medical problems, which were attempted to be solved using antibiotics but only increased antibiotic resistant bacteria. These new
practices benefit corporations that run them and produce easy and quick cheap meat but Pollan warns that they come with repercussions. Some of those

The Pros And Cons Of The Corn Laws: Thomas Malthus
The Corn Laws were a series of policies which aimed to stabilize the price of corn by imposing some tariffs and restrictions on corn imports. For
example, they prohibited the importation of wheat when the home price fell below 80 shillings a quarter. The Parliament discussed them between the
1815 and 1846. The issue interested all the social classes, as corn was the principal food of the labouring class and farm animals, and its price
variations concerned landlords' rents. The heated debate involved several economists and statesmen, who argued on the benefits and disadvantages of
the policies from different perspectives. One of its most fervid supporter was Thomas Malthus, who gave a particular contribution on the Corn Laws
debate between 1814... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An incentive on corn export would have increased just the nominal price of corn, leading to an equivalent increase in the wages and in the prices of
all other commodities. However, he believed that it is only through variations in the real price of corn that it was possible to encourage economic
production. Malthus (1814) opposed the Adam Smith's argument, stating that, since corn is conditioned by the general principles of demand and
supply, like other commodities, "it is possible to encourage cultivation by Corn Laws" (p.5). Malthus wrote that workers do not spend all their wages
in corn or grain, and so wages do not adjust exactly in proportion to corn price variations in presence of free trade, but at a slower rate. Because of that,
a tariff or a restriction on the importation of grain would have increased the real price of the corn, and so given an economic incentive to expand and

market in 1897. Ultimately, other companies began to create and distribute cereals, and by 1911, there were over a hundred cereal companies in the
city of Battle Creek. In 2011, the world's largest cereal company, Kellogg, sold over $13 billion in cereal. Speaking of which, an online article from the
MSU library–"Cereal" is insightful regarding the topic. Did you know cereal sales have increased $1 billion from 2006–2010? According to the
journal, General Mills is also sending coupons to consumer's smart phones. Another brilliant marketing strategy, convenience to the max. To further
prove my point, other companies such as Nestle, Purina, Campbell Soup co, are all studying the psychology of shoppers, and their attitude towards

everything for itself and there wouldn't be "enough people, machines, and land to go around to make everything as cheaply as could be made under

Response Paper 4 – How have economic development and globalization changed the ecology of human health and disease? In your discussion, include
aging, infectious disease, and chronic disease. You should discuss the concept of epidemiological transitions Prehistoric humans had no notion for the
differences between a PPO or an HMO benefits package, nor any reason to concern themselves. Similarly, most people today haven't the slightest idea

The first epidemiological transition, according to Newman, came with the Neolithic revolution around 6,000 B.C. Populations exploded as agricultural
technologies advanced, but the supply of food rarely exceeded the growing need. The widespread effects of resultant malnutrition "are most readily
observable in the altered growth and maturation rates of the children surviving dietary crises, their disease susceptibilities, and in the vitality of the
adults. [...] Another consequence of chronic undernutrition is reduced resistance to [infectious] disease" (Newman, 62). This can be seen in
civilizations overly reliant on maize, such as depression–era Southerners in the United States (Bock, 14). Maize comes up short in amino acid content,
which in this case led to a condition called pellagra, a niacin deficiency characterized by diarrhea, dermatitis, and dementia. Unfortunately, malnutrition
has not subsided with the passing of time, and industrialized agriculture has supplanted infectious disease with its chronic counterpart, at an alarming
rate of morbidity.
A large contributor to this most recent epidemiological transition is the old guard of food conglomerates like corn and milk. An informal investigation
of the packaged food in the local supermarket will confirm this assertion. Corn, in one form or another, is contained in almost every iteration of "junk
food" distributed around the world. From snack

Consequently, one of the most significant events in Britain's nineteenth–century economic history was the repeal of the Corn Laws and its move
toward free trade in 1846. The Corn Laws were trade laws designed to protect cereal producers in the Great Britain and Ireland against competition
from less expensive foreign imports between 1815 and 1846. To ensure that British landowners reaped all the financial profits from farming, the corn
laws imposed steep import duties, making it too expensive for anyone to import grain from other countries, even when the people of Great Britain
needed the food (as in times of famine). The decisive moment in the repeal of the Corn Laws arrived when Prime Minister Robert Peel, who was
quite sure that without repeal Britain might have experienced "a revolution similar to that seen in France in 1848." and a third of his fellow
conservative Members of Parliament (Peelites) who had historically been protectionist reversed their stance and embraced free trade. It is this change
of mind and vote that has been the subject of much study in political science and economic history. Non–Peelite Conservatives represented districts
with "hard–core" protectionist interests and less diversification into nonagricultural ventures such as David Ricardo and Robert Torrens.
Scholars have advanced several explanations to resolve the puzzle of why Peel made the seemingly irrational decision to sacrifice his government to
repeal the Corn Laws, a policy which

Why Schools Should Provide Food Education Classes Essay
If asked, would you be able to explain in detail how the food you ate for dinner last night was made and what ingredients it contained? Furthermore,
would you be able to identify the presence of corn in your meal? Unfortunately, the average American would not be able to. Food is one of the most
basic and essential human needs, yet it is a topic that most of us know very little about. Tom Small believes that this should change. Small asserts that
parents nowadays do not have time to cook healthy meals, let alone teach their kids how to shop for food and cook. This dangerous new phenomenon is
compromising our health, our environment, and our consciousness. I agree with Tom Small; schools should provide and require courses that teach
students how to cook and shop for themselves.
The first reason why schools should provide food education classes is because nowadays, people do not know what they are eating. The majority of
most Americans would not be able to pronounce the names of the ingredients listed on the package of the last snack food they consumed. Consumers
"ignore certain critical questions about the quality and the cost of what they are sold: How fresh is it? How clean or pure is it, how free of
dangerous chemicals? ... When the food has been manufactured or "processed" or "precooked," how has that affected its quality or price or nutritional
value?" (Berry, 24) It is of utmost importance that we understand what the food that lines the grocery store shelves is actually

My Favorite Experience
"THEY HAVE CARAMEL POPCORN," I yelled to my friends. They didn't seem to care, but on an elementary field trip there is always so much
going on that even caramel popcorn can seem boring. We were in the old student building of the University of Washington and the lunches were
blowing my mind. Compared to the reheated–by–microwave slop they plopped on my tray everyday back at school, this cafeteria was a feast for the
gods. I knew I had to go here someday, if only to be able to get caramel popcorn every day for lunch. Despite not recognizing the brilliant architecture,
wonderful academics, and prestigious reputation, I think I had my priorities right as a kid. The popcorn, to be fair, was delicious.
However, about seven years later, I stared at the beautiful library thinking on how I would never be able to go. My dreams were crushed, and the
school I looked so forward to going to was not feasible. I felt like a failure. I sat near a turned off Drumheller Fountain late at night reflecting on
how I failed to reach my goal. My ADHD prevented me from not only doing well in school but it started affecting even the things I enjoyed to do. I
couldn't even finish a book without being distracted. Add on top of that was my brother needed my help because of his epilepsy. Many times before a
final test in class, I'd spend the night in a hospital with him. To top everything off, I had to question who I was as I realized I was gay. I felt like I had
to hide myself from the world for fear of

Corn Laws Chartism

  • 1. Corn Laws Chartism Tension started when the Corn Laws were enforced in 1815, this imposed restrictions and tariffs on imported grain, corn, flour, and meal. The Corn Laws were designed by conservatives to keep grain prices high to favor domestic producers thus, food prices rose and riots throughout the city of London began to break out. The Corn Laws enhanced the profits and political power associated with landownership. The government directly regulated the import and export of grain, making it more expensive to produce and trade grains grown by local farmers. In 1839, the Anti–Corn Law League was established to fight against England's Corn Laws. The league mobilized the industrial middle classes against the landlords. During the grain shortage caused by Britain growing population and the blockades imposed by the Napoleonic Wars, the Corn Laws were repealed in 1846. The Reform Act of 1832 was an Act of Parliament that introduced a wide range of changes to the electoral system of England and Wales. The act disenfranchised 56 boroughs in England and Wales and reduced another 31 to only one MP. The act also created 67 new constituencies, this broaden the franchise's property qualification in the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This movement aimed to gain political rights and influence for working class citizens. The Chartist movement is known to be the first mass movement driven by the working classes. It grew in popularity following the failure of the Reform Act of 1832, which extended the vote to citizens who owned property. In 1838 William Lovett and Francis Place drew up a People's Charter for the London Working Men's Association. The Charter had six demands; all men should have the right to vote, voting should take place by secret ballot, there should be parliamentary elections every year, constituencies should be equal of size, members of Parliament should be paid, and property qualification for becoming a member of Parliament should be ... • 2. Who Invented The Flour Industry What did you have for breakfast this morning? Was it cereal or toast these items and many more contain flour. Without the help of the flour industry you probably wouldn't of been able to eat those items. The flour industry has been around for many years. It's a big part of history and still plays a very important role. The flour industry started at least two hundred years ago. The flour industry is still very important today. The start of the flour industry was very small. However the reason the flour industry was very small was that it was just the beginning of it, and many people did not know how profitable it would be. Another reason it was so small was that many people did not know if it was going to be a waste of money, because it was very expensive to pay for everything. In order to make this a successful industry the flour industry would need many employees such as farmers, railroad workers, machinists who tended to the large machines, barrel makers, packers who caught flour after it was poured off of the assembly line. Without enough farmers selling wheat to the flour companies or them having farmers that worked there they didn't have as much wheat to make the flour. Which meant for the flour companies less flour was able to be made.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another thing that happened in the late 1800s was that Charles Pillsbury bought a failing flour company with the help of his uncle. They didn't know how this would turn out in the end, years later the company was sold but Charles still helped with it. In fact at the time buying or starting a flour company probably wasn't the best decision to make, especially if you didn't have a bunch of money. A big thing that happened to many companies was that many people were dying because of the machines, fires, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Problems of the Food System Essay We live in an age in which we have come to expect everything to be instantaneously at our fingertips. We live in an age of instant coffee, instant tea, and even instant mashed potatoes. We can walk down the street at 5 in the morning and get a gallon of milk or even a weeks worth of groceries at our discretion. Even though it is great that food is now readily available at all times, this convenience comes at a price, for both the producer and the consumer. Farmers are cheated out of money and are slaves to big business, workers and animals are mistreated. And, because food now comes at a low cost, it has become cheaper quality and therefore potentially dangerous to the consumer's health. These problems surrounding the ethics and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additionally, big business controls the farmers by capitalizing on widely used commodities. For example, the company Monsanto which is based in St. Louis, Missouri protects its dominance over the genetically modified crops such as the soy bean with the use of a patent law. Because of this, Monsanto's patented genes "account for 95 percent of all soy beans and 80 percent of all corn grown in the U.S.," (Associated Press). If you think being a farmer is bad, try working in a slaughter house. "Knocker, Sticker, Shackler, Rumper, First Legger, Knuckle Dropper," these are just a few of the positions the workers at a slaughterhouse get assigned to. Simply reading the names of the above job positions induces a sense of nausea and hints at the inherent brutality that these positions demand (Schlosser, 172). Because the weight and size of cows are unpredictable, most of the labor in the slaughterhouse must be done by hand. On the kill floor of a slaughterhouse, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The American Reaction to Richard Cobden: An Economy of... Introduction Though Anglo–American relations are not currently hostile, they were not always this way. This paper will explore the free trade beliefs of Richard Cobden, and show that Americans who rejected his ideas did so out of ignorance and fear. The paper will begin with a description of Cobden's context and beliefs and then move to an analysis of American Anglophobia and Anglomania and governmental responses to Cobden. Context Trade liberalization in Great Britain signaled an era of intense change in the European economy. The document that triggered this change was the Cobden–Chevalier Treaty of 1860. Anglo–French trade antagonisms had reached an agonizing level for the two countries, beginning with the Congress of Vienna and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Later, in the same speech, he stated that the goal of the League was not to simply have cheap corn, but to have corn "follow the same law which the monopolists in food admit that labor must follow; that 'it shall find its natural level in the markets of the world'" (Bullock & Shock, 1957). Cobden also believed that military spending, instead of aiding growth, prevented markets from operating as they could if more money was available for private investment (Stringham, 2004). He believed that market interaction was the most influential factor in the success of the most powerful nations and that Britain should lower its military spending if it wanted to compete in the global market. In 1996, Knight, Loayza, and Villanueva conducted a study which confirmed Cobden's beliefs, concluding that "military spending retards economic growth; namely, through crowding out human capital investment and fostering the adoption of various types of trade restrictions" (as cited in Stringham, 2004, p. 108). Though this study–and others like it–came much later than Cobden's time, he planted the seed of doubt in many citizens' minds about what they had previously seen as the benefits of military growth. Ironically, Cobden viewed the U.S. as a threat to Britain's economic influence. The U.S. had lower taxes and less military spending (which would eventually rise with the two World Wars) and attributed the country's sudden economic rise ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. A Short Story : A Story? "When will that dumb bell ring?" Kenzi thought to herself. She was sitting half off her seat to get a head start to her car. Her and her friends were supposed to go to a corn maze after school and she knew she couldn't be late. She jumped out of her seat as soon as the bell rang. "Kenzi!" Kenzi swept her head quickly around to see Malachi pushing past everyone to get to her. "Well see you then I guess." He chuckled and walked away. Kenzi sprung into her car and hurled her backpack into the passenger seat. She started the car and started to drive. She pulled into the parking lot quickly swerving to avoid a car parked on the side of the road. Kenzi slowed down and looked over at the car startled to find a scarecrow sitting in the driver's seat. She could've sworn she saw the head turn but she drove past too fast to notice. She tried not to think much of it while she searched for a parking spot. It was probably a dumb joke, right? She thought to herself. A couple minutes later she found a parking spot and smiled as her friend Cassidy rushed over the hug her as she got out. "Kenzi! What took you so long?" She said and hauled her into a hug. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Corn Law Dbq The Corn Law grew into powerful political impact. It was used to attack the government by registering voters in by–elections or "general election" (p. 358). The Corn Laws were import tariffs designed to help protect grain prices in Great Britain and Ireland against competition from the less expensive foreign imports coming in; in the late18th century and early 19th century. But this still didn't solve the problem of high prices of other foods. This law was supported by conservative land owners and workers but during the crisis of the "Irish Potato Famine", Peel took advantage to repeal the Corn Laws. Many of the other Members of Parliament were for these laws and didn't want to get rid of them but many did want to abolish them. Peel introduced ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Repeal Of The Corn Laws Dbq The repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846 was one of the most momentous events in Britain's nineteenth century economic history. It moved the country toward free trade, and caused a formal brake up of the Tory party. The Corn Laws were passed in 1815 under Liverpool's Tory ministry, they placed tariffs on the importation of corn, a commodity of the time that denotes all types of grain. The powerful landowners wanted to be protected from the falling grain prices after the Napoleonic War, as well as from foreign competition, so consumers were forced to pay higher prices on grain. The Anti Corn Law League was a political movement formed in 1838 that wanted the repeal of the Corm Laws in order to move toward free trade. In 1846 Robert Peel split with... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Peel was resistant to a new administration lead by Earl Grey, and he argued against parliamentary reform. Nevertheless, the Reform Act was passed in 1832. Earl Grey's Whig government was discharged by William IV in 1834 and Peel was appointed as the Prime Minister. In the Tamworth Manifesto Peel was supportive of the Reform Act which was a shift that showed his acceptance of a more enlightened Conservatism. Even though the Peelite Tories were in power they remained as a minority in the House of Commons. This lead to to his resignation in 1835. Peel returned and on August 24, 1841 Peel stated "If I could be induced to believe that an alteration in the Corn Laws would be an effectual remedy for those distressed [of the poor], I would be the first step forward, and ...I would earnestly advise a relaxation and alteration, – nay, if necessary, a repeal of the Corn Laws" (Peel). This is stating that Peel's dedication to protectionism was limited rather than absolute. Peel was not finished and in 1841 he formed a Conservative administration which oversaw many significant pieces of legislation. The most challenging and significant one being his attempt to repeal the Corm Laws. If an egg is submerged in distilled water, then the egg will expand in size. If an egg is submerged in corn syrup, then the egg will shrivel. If an egg is submerged in a salt solution, then the egg will shrivel. The hypothesis concerning the egg submerged in distilled water, was supported. The egg grew by 2.5 cm and weighed 12.5 grams more than it did in the beginning. The hypothesis concerning the egg being submerged in the corn syrup was also supported. The egg shrunk down to a significant size, the egg ended up being 22.42 grams lighter and a cm smaller than it's original measurements. The last hypothesis, the one using salt water, was refuted. The students said the egg would shrink, like the corn syrup, when in reality it grew like the distilled water egg, in the end it had 13.19 extra grams and 2 cm that weren't present in the beginning. With two of three hypotheses supported, the students learned a great deal about diffusion and osmosis. • 10. Lab Report On Dicytatis In Osmosis Introduction The purpose of this lab is to determine how the egg changes when it was in different substances which were distilled water and corn syrup. The reason the eggs change in size is because of osmosis. Osmosis is a form of facilitated diffusion when water moves through channels, water is moving from high to low. There are three types of solutions, isotonic, hypertonic and hypotonic. When theegg is placed in an isotonic solution the egg will stay the same size. Isotonic is when the concentration of water is the same outside and inside the cell and water moves equally in both directions. When an egg is placed in hypertonic solution the egg will grow because hypertonic is when the concentration of water is higher outside the cell than inside. When an egg is placed in a hypertonic solution the egg will shrink because hypertonic is when the concentration of water is higher outside the cell than inside the cell. Osmosis can happen when salt is put on a slug. The salt will take all moisture out of the slug, because there is more water inside the cell than out. Therefore the slug will lose more fluid than it can tolerate so it will become dehydrated and die ("Why Slugs Hate Salt").The hypothesis for corn syrup is if the egg is placed in corn syrup than the egg will become smaller because the corn syrup is thick so it has little water which causes it to shrink. The hypothesis for distilled water is if the egg is placed in distilled water then it will get bigger because the water will cause the egg to expand. • 13. Britain's Expansion Of The Corn Laws During 1815, Britain introduced the Corn Laws which allowed the Colonies to trade with Britain at very low tariffs. The Corn Laws made tariffs increase from other places trading with Britain, especially the United States. This benefited Britain because trade from places other than the colonies would come into Britain with higher tariffs. This heightened the profit Britain made from international trade. In 1846, Britain stopped the Corn Laws because places other than the colonies had either stopped trading with Britain or had traded less with Britain because of the increased tariffs. This led to declining resources, such as food, which led to famine. This problem led to the Free Trade. Free Trade allowed everyone to trade with Britain without ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One day, Jack couldn't fall asleep, so he asked his mother, "How did we end up so poor?" His mother sighed and answered. "We were incredibly rich when you're father was alive. When he died, we lost all our money." Jack realized this was an opportunity to learn more about his father. Ordinarily, Jack's mother refused to talk about his father. "How did he die?" Jack asked. Jack's mother's face fell when she heard the question. "A giant came out of the sky and took him away, I haven't seen him since then." Jack was as silent as a statue for a few seconds as he processed the information. Suddenly, his eyes lit up, and he smiled from ear to ear. His mother stared at him, confused. "Why are you so happy?" She asked. Jack looked at his mother still smiling. "Was my father dead when the giant took him away?" he questioned. Jack's mother shook her head. "He wasn't when they took him away, but surely the giant killed him as soon as he brought him home." "There's a chance he's still alive." Jack responded, his words dripping with hope. The next day, Jack went to Milky White, the cow that kept them alive by producing milk for them to sell and drink. But today something was strange, the pail that usually holds the Milky White's milk was empty. Milky White did not produce any milk today! When Jack delivered the news to his mother, she frowned and told him to take Milky White to the butcher to make a trade. Jack hesitated for a second and then decided to do what his mother told him and began his walk to the butcher's shop. When he arrived, the butcher looked at Milky White and said,"What do you want for the cow?" Jack took a moment to look around and decided he wanted to trade for a chicken. It was instigated with the support of Lord Liverpool the current Prime Minister who saw the Corn Laws as a temporary measure to create stability in the agricultural sector in the immediate post–war years. The Corn Laws were potentially disastrous because they, along with the abolishment of Income tax and the creation of the Game laws, were seen as a return by the ultra–Tory's to a single–issue, single class government. That issue being the wants and needs of the landed classes. I believe that the Corn Laws led large groups of the urbanised population to become... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hypothesis: If a marble is dropped into dish soap and corn syrup, than I predict that the marble in the dish soap will travel faster than the marble in the corn syrup because I know that the viscosity of the corn syrup is thicker than then the viscosity of the dish soap. Also, the particles in the corn syrup are more compact than those in the dish soap. This makes the marble sink faster in the dish soap than the corn syrup. It is very difficult for large particles to move past each other unlike small, tiny particles, like those in the dish soap. The particles in the dish soap are very small and can move more freely and quickly. In the dish soap, the particles are very small and can move past each other easily when compared to the particles in the corn syrup. Another reason also contributed to the result of this experiment. Attraction. Some types of particles tend to attract more than others and that is exactly what happened in the corn syrup. The particles in the corn syrup attracted more than the dish soap. The large particles in the corn syrup held tightly to each other, that when the marble fell in that it made it hard for the marble to pass through more than one particle at a time. IN the dish soap, the particles did not attract as much as the corn syrup which let the marble move easily and quickly through the liquid. The strength of attraction as well as the particle size is important in determining a fluid's viscosity. Application: This viscosity experiment can be used in real–life when making sun–tan lotion as well as other cosmetic products. It is important for the lotion to be viscous because the lotion could not be applied and spread around the body if the cream was not viscous enough to suit its use. It would drip all over you! • 32. The Law Of The Corn Laws Another way in which a comparison of the two thinkers can be given with respect to the Corn Laws is through their positioning on the issue of Say's Law. To introduce this concept, Jean–Baptiste Say developed the Law of Markets, which is commonly referred to as Say's Law, in his A Treatise on Political Economy. He maintains that in order to consume, one must provide supplies for another's demand in order to earn a unit of account to consume goods, meaning a consumer must also be a producer (Say, I.XV.133). Therefore, the economy is a constant cycle of production, proving that supply creates its own demand. Because of this implication, Say's Law can be viewed in relation to the Corn Laws as the law implies both that an economy will equilibrate without a need for government intervention and that free trade is non–distortionary. Knowing this, it becomes evident that the law was supported by Ricardo, albeit implicitly, and explicitly rejected by Malthus. This section will therefore more indepthly move through the two thinker's opinions on the law to prove their stance on the greater issue of the Corn Laws. Malthus disagrees with Say's Law, as it oversimplifies the nuance of the economy through its failure to account for the insufficiency of demand coupled with overproduction. The main argument about the insufficiency of demand is brought about by the expenditure of the different social classes. The insufficiency of demand he notes makes up his glut theory. Descriptive Essay About The Maze The Maize Maze Diego Villada–Youel As I crawled in the back of my dad's truck, ready to go to the corn maze, my stomach felt like it had a hundred butterflies were trying to get out. About halfway to the corn maze my stomach felt like the butterflies that we're trying to storm out had ten babies each, that we're now trying to burst out like fireworks. I could taste the dirt under my nails when I was chewing them due to the tizzy feeling I had about what was going to happen in the maze. Finally, after what felt like a week before I arrived to the farm we hopped in line to buy tickets for the maze. I heard screams coming from the maze and the butterflies flew away, but, pigeons took their place and I felt like puking. I heard people, coming out of the maze talking about their favorite parts. One of them announced their favorite was when she was chased by the man with a chainsaw. Just the thought of being chased made me want to curl up in a ball, find a nice hiding place and never come out. On the other hand, I undoubtedly wanted to mosey through the maze, to show my brother and sister that I could make it through the maze and not appear as scared as them. After getting our tickets, we hopped in line for the maze. In the rear of the line, we talked and took pictures. There were about twenty people in front of us, but, In no time we were at the front of the line. As soon as our tickets were checked, we walked into the maze and it smelled like hay and corn. I could feel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Omnivore 's Dilemma By Michael Pollan Benecia Felix COL:Earth Book Review Omnivore's Dilemma By Michael Pollan Michael Pollan is the author of several New York Times bestseller books including the Omnivore's Dilemma. He is a professor of journalism at UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Michael Pollan's perspective on food is that we should know what is in it and where it comes from, who grows it and how. The theme of this book is the industrial revolution for food. Its purpose is to make awareness that our food is getting its energy from our resources. Michael Pollan's goal with the omnivore's dilemma was to shed light on the way we eat now by telling stories about how we ate then and explaining the pros and cons of our change. He introduces his book about food ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Michael refers to the supermarket as a landscape where all species derived from the single crop of corn. Michael tells a story about a corn field in Iowa where the farm had been passed down to the family and was quiet successful back in the day. George's crop in inedible they are fed to livestock so shipped to factories to be processed. His family survives from the income of his wife who works for a social services agency. The supply of corn has greatly surpassed the demand and therefore alternative decisions must be made as to where the corn will go which is why it is fed to cattle and other livestock. This is Pollan's way of tracing the steps of the industrial food chain. Since corn is produced so cheaply using synthetic nitrogen which creates a dependency on our fossil fuel resources rather than our solar resource. The Feedlot method has produced more issues than solutions. Yes, it does result in fattening cattle quicker which in term then produces faster meat but it results in manure that is extremely high in concentration of phosphorous and nitrogen that cannot be used as fertilizer to regenerate nutrients in the soil. If the soil cannot be regenerated cattle must be moved which leads to medical problems, which were attempted to be solved using antibiotics but only increased antibiotic resistant bacteria. These new practices benefit corporations that run them and produce easy and quick cheap meat but Pollan warns that they come with repercussions. Some of those ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. The Pros And Cons Of The Corn Laws: Thomas Malthus The Corn Laws were a series of policies which aimed to stabilize the price of corn by imposing some tariffs and restrictions on corn imports. For example, they prohibited the importation of wheat when the home price fell below 80 shillings a quarter. The Parliament discussed them between the 1815 and 1846. The issue interested all the social classes, as corn was the principal food of the labouring class and farm animals, and its price variations concerned landlords' rents. The heated debate involved several economists and statesmen, who argued on the benefits and disadvantages of the policies from different perspectives. One of its most fervid supporter was Thomas Malthus, who gave a particular contribution on the Corn Laws debate between 1814... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An incentive on corn export would have increased just the nominal price of corn, leading to an equivalent increase in the wages and in the prices of all other commodities. However, he believed that it is only through variations in the real price of corn that it was possible to encourage economic production. Malthus (1814) opposed the Adam Smith's argument, stating that, since corn is conditioned by the general principles of demand and supply, like other commodities, "it is possible to encourage cultivation by Corn Laws" (p.5). Malthus wrote that workers do not spend all their wages in corn or grain, and so wages do not adjust exactly in proportion to corn price variations in presence of free trade, but at a slower rate. Because of that, a tariff or a restriction on the importation of grain would have increased the real price of the corn, and so given an economic incentive to expand and invest in agricultural ... In your discussion, include aging, infectious disease, and chronic disease. You should discuss the concept of epidemiological transitions Prehistoric humans had no notion for the differences between a PPO or an HMO benefits package, nor any reason to concern themselves. Similarly, most people today haven't the slightest idea how to clean a fish. To be fair to both groups, our environment has changed drastically in the interim, as have our collective needs. The first epidemiological transition, according to Newman, came with the Neolithic revolution around 6,000 B.C. Populations exploded as agricultural technologies advanced, but the supply of food rarely exceeded the growing need. The widespread effects of resultant malnutrition "are most readily observable in the altered growth and maturation rates of the children surviving dietary crises, their disease susceptibilities, and in the vitality of the adults. [...] Another consequence of chronic undernutrition is reduced resistance to [infectious] disease" (Newman, 62). This can be seen in civilizations overly reliant on maize, such as depression–era Southerners in the United States (Bock, 14). Maize comes up short in amino acid content, which in this case led to a condition called pellagra, a niacin deficiency characterized by diarrhea, dermatitis, and dementia. Unfortunately, malnutrition has not subsided with the passing of time, and industrialized agriculture has supplanted infectious disease with its chronic counterpart, at an alarming rate of morbidity. A large contributor to this most recent epidemiological transition is the old guard of food conglomerates like corn and milk. An informal investigation of the packaged food in the local supermarket will confirm this assertion. Corn, in one form or another, is contained in almost every iteration of "junk food" distributed around the world. From snack ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To begin with, the freedom of trade usually means lack of the high export and import duties, and also not monetary restrictions on trade, for example, quotas of import of certain goods and subsidies for local producers of certain goods. Supporters of free trade are Liberal parties and currents; many left–wing parties and movements concern to opponents (socialists and communists), defenders of human rights and environment, and also labor unions. The mercantilism which has arisen in Europe in the XVI century was one of early theories of trade. Consequently, one of the most significant events in Britain's nineteenth–century economic history was the repeal of the Corn Laws and its move toward free trade in 1846. The Corn Laws were trade laws designed to protect cereal producers in the Great Britain and Ireland against competition from less expensive foreign imports between 1815 and 1846. To ensure that British landowners reaped all the financial profits from farming, the corn laws imposed steep import duties, making it too expensive for anyone to import grain from other countries, even when the people of Great Britain needed the food (as in times of famine). The decisive moment in the repeal of the Corn Laws arrived when Prime Minister Robert Peel, who was quite sure that without repeal Britain might have experienced "a revolution similar to that seen in France in 1848." and a third of his fellow conservative Members of Parliament (Peelites) who had historically been protectionist reversed their stance and embraced free trade. It is this change of mind and vote that has been the subject of much study in political science and economic history. Non–Peelite Conservatives represented districts with "hard–core" protectionist interests and less diversification into nonagricultural ventures such as David Ricardo and Robert Torrens. Scholars have advanced several explanations to resolve the puzzle of why Peel made the seemingly irrational decision to sacrifice his government to repeal the Corn Laws, a policy which ... • 46. Why Schools Should Provide Food Education Classes Essay If asked, would you be able to explain in detail how the food you ate for dinner last night was made and what ingredients it contained? Furthermore, would you be able to identify the presence of corn in your meal? Unfortunately, the average American would not be able to. Food is one of the most basic and essential human needs, yet it is a topic that most of us know very little about. Tom Small believes that this should change. Small asserts that parents nowadays do not have time to cook healthy meals, let alone teach their kids how to shop for food and cook. This dangerous new phenomenon is compromising our health, our environment, and our consciousness. I agree with Tom Small; schools should provide and require courses that teach students how to cook and shop for themselves. The first reason why schools should provide food education classes is because nowadays, people do not know what they are eating. The majority of most Americans would not be able to pronounce the names of the ingredients listed on the package of the last snack food they consumed. Consumers "ignore certain critical questions about the quality and the cost of what they are sold: How fresh is it? How clean or pure is it, how free of dangerous chemicals? ... They didn't seem to care, but on an elementary field trip there is always so much going on that even caramel popcorn can seem boring. Compared to the reheated–by–microwave slop they plopped on my tray everyday back at school, this cafeteria was a feast for the gods. I knew I had to go here someday, if only to be able to get caramel popcorn every day for lunch. Despite not recognizing the brilliant architecture, wonderful academics, and prestigious reputation, I think I had my priorities right as a kid. The popcorn, to be fair, was delicious. However, about seven years later, I stared at the beautiful library thinking on how I would never be able to go. My dreams were crushed, and the school I looked so forward to going to was not feasible. I felt like a failure.
