Summary Of Country Music By Will Wilkinson
Crafting an Argument: Wilkinson and Country Music
In Will Wilkinson's Country Music, Openness to Experience, and the Psychology of Culture War, he
argues that country music itself is an ideology. He achieves this by explaining how country music's
supporters and listeners are primarily conservative individuals whose happiness comes from the
"enchantment of everyday life" lives depend on and is a "bulwark against cultural change'.
Wilkinson begins his essay with a statement that underlines the tone for the rest of his essay of
country music, that it is an "ideology". Wilkinson quotes Dana Carney to state "liberals are more
open minded, creative, curious and novelty seeking. Whereas conservatives are more orderly,
conventional, and better organized". ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A counter argument added to Wilkinson's essay will let itself be presented as a more solid
argumentative paper rather than what at points seem as bickering essay. Wilkinson's first piece of
evidence "one boy, one girl" by Collin Reye seems obsolete. In fact until this essay by Wilkinson I
myself have never heard of the song ; bearing in mind the town I come from Uvalde, Texas, has the
only FM radio station for 30 miles, and is named "104.9 Coyote Country". I believe Wilkinson's
essay does make great points but a counter argument of how country music is now seemingly
changing to what Wilkinson would claim is more of a liberal sound. In fact driving in my home the
other day and listening to "today's country hits", "this is how we roll" by Florida Georgia line
(another big name in today's country music) played from the radio". With the words "The mixtape's
got a little Hank, little Drake, a little something bumping, thump, thumping on the wheel ride...we
hanging 'round singing out everything on the radio". Something such as this piece of evidence
would support Wilkinson's argument on "hot blooded kids having a good old time", but also pave
way to the new a new theory that perhaps country music is moving towards a more liberal spectrum.
Wilkinson's essay is written in a political stance but uses country music as a vessel to achieve and
categorizing how conservatives

Country Vs Pop Music
Country vs. Pop: Which One Is On Top? Country and Pop music are both popular genres, but which
one is better? This decision is tough to make since there are various similarities of to why both are
great genres of music. There is also a variety of factors to show the differences between these two
genres as well. Research has shown light to the conclusion of to which genre exceeds the other. The
things that both genres can be judged on is how they came to be, their fanbase, and the top hits. The
origination of Country, compared to Pop music is very different. Country music came to be in 1910
when an ethnomusicologist, John Lomax, published "Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads".

According to the iTunes charts the number one music video that is taking over the charts at the
moment is Taylor Swift's song called "Blank Space". Throughout the list there is not a country song
until number twenty–one with "Girl In A Country Song" by Maddie and Tae. Between the two it
clearly shows that the videos are different in the ways they were filmed and how they portrayed the
song and it's meaning. Taylor Swift went for a video that was like a story and went along with the
song, while Maddie and Tae's music video showed that they were trying to prove a point about the
stereotype of a country girl. According to the iTune's charts for the songs, "Blank Space" by Taylor
Swift was number one also. A country song was located farther down in the list at number thirty–one
with "Shotgun Rider" by Tim McGraw. Both genres are making it onto the charts, but country music
is lower in the ranking compared to the pop genre. The results of these rankings are from online
purchases, which is why these rankings may be biased to some extent. The reason for this is, yet
again, that the pop genre fan base is more electronically educated than the country fan base and it
may be a point as to why songs are ranked the way they

Essay On Country Music
Country music is everywhere in the United States. It is America and people either love it or hate it.
There is usually no middle ground. It accounts for sixteen percent of the nation's radio stations and
is the most common genre played on the radio. There are many different types of country music
around today, including Americana, bluegrass, honky tonk, and contemporary country. Music of all
genres has an evolution through the years. Country music hasn't always been what we recognize it
as today. Country music began in the 1920's in a town in Tennessee called Bristol and was
recognized for its hillbilly and folk format. Country music artists like Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins,
and Jerry Lee Lewis are each responsible for creating this music format that was written mostly
about everyday life. Today country music is recognized as a more modern contemporary version of
music. Today's country artists have started to change their sound in order to appeal to the
mainstream audience in order to make more money. Miranda Lambert said "there's been a shift:
country music is popular now. Every other genre wants to come over to our land." Country music is

The Country Music Has Changed Over The Past Decades
Country music has changed over the past decades, as all music does, stepping away from the focus
on freedom, family, friends, faith, and home, to songs about women, drinking, dirt roads, and big
trucks. Many people feel that this has led to the objectification of women, creating an unrealistic
expectation for women to live up to. Most artist have followed the lead of this and are writing more
and more songs about these issues to stay with the trends, as many people enjoy this twist because it
is coming with incorporations of other styles of music. This concept has become know as bro
country, music that men can relate to when they are talking to their buddies or bros. In "Girl in a
Country Song" the lyrics tell a story of the girls ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women in country songs are identified by their bodies, and clothing, which gives off a certain
appearance. The song opens with talking about "bare feet" and "painted on cut off jeans", which is
calling out David Nail and his song "Whatever She's Got" as well as "Aw Naw" by Chris Young
where they both talks about the girls who "got the blue jeans painted on tight" and how everyone
wants that on a saturday night. Men want a carefree woman who wears tight clothes and that
everyone wants a girl who can move her body in those "painted on jeans". Then they go on to talk
about men sitting on the tailgate or their truck whistling and watching the girls, this calls out Billy
Currington and his song "Hey Girl" where he talks about how all the guys are looking at her, and
how she is "so hot, gotta give it a shot", paying attention to the girl 's body and how men will flirt
with women, and the control a "hot" woman has over a man making them "all tongue tied" so that
they can't think straight. Calling out multiple artist with talking about "shakin' my moneymaker",

The Evolution Of Country Music
Some people love change, and others, not so much. One instance being in what we listen to on the
radio. Country music used to stand out as one of the only types of music that was not vulgar and
explicit and was easily identifiable, though lately, that has not been the case. The latest trend of
country music has people on both sides of the fence as it continually evolves into amix of several
genres and expands further from its roots."The country music genre has gone through quite a
transformation in the past couple of years" (Grady Smith) as stated in an Entertainment Weekly
article. This quote is referring to howcountry music has gotten away from the slow and innocent
tune it used to have. Nowadays you can hardly hear an acoustic guitar of

Gender Inequality In Country Music
Walking the Line of Gender Inequality Country music is a staple of American culture, however it
does not properly represent over half of its audience. Female musicians in the country music genre
are heavily outweighed by their male counterparts in terms of radio airplay and sales. Why do the
successful country music artists not reflect the demographic of the audience? Has representation of
each gender in country music always been as skewed as it is today? Female artists in country music
should receive the same opportunities or treatment from the industry that male artists do.
Country music originated in the 1920s in Tennessee. The genre was influenced by folk music from
the Appalachian Mountains and revolved around themes of love, faith, ... Show more content on

Commercially, some women have experienced extreme success while under the country music
umbrella. Shania Twain, one of the most popular artists in the 1990s, "Not only is [...] country
music's most successful female artist, she also recorded the genre's most successful album of all
time, Come On Over in 1997" (McCarthy, par. 3). Taylor Swift's 2013 arena tour to support her last
country album was the most lucrative tour in North America that year, bringing in more than $113
million in ticket revenue (Sisario, par. 16). Critically, women have fared extremely well in recent
years. A movement to make music acknowledging the genre's roots has been lead by a group of
female country musicians– to the admiration of critics and fans alike, if they get the chance to hear
the music. Since 2014, seven of fifteen nominees for the Grammy Award for country album of the
year have been women, with two of the three winners being female (Leight, par. 28–30). If women
are given the opportunity to be heard on the radio and develop a fanbase, the chances to achieve a
high level of prosperity are just as high as their male counterparts'. The level of critical success
experienced by some new female artists shows that women and the themes they portray in their
songs appeal to many people, even if the music is not being heard by the

The Characteristics Of Country Music : Cowboys And Kisses

Cowboys and Kisses Country music was everything in Walker's life. He listened to it religiously,
whether he was out in the fields on the tractor or just in the house, cooking dinner. He loved the
twang of the guitars, the steady beat of the drums, and the baritone drawl of the man singing about
his lost love or his truck. Most of all, he loved the man who sang them, a country singer named
Beau. Beau grew up just down the road from Walker. He had been friendly to Walker, but they could
never truly call each other friends. Walker had subtly watched him from afar. He watched Beau flirt
with girls and sing them songs; but, he also noticed how he'd look at boys when he thought no one
else was looking. They lived in a small, southern town where most people did not accept lifestyles
outside of the norm. When Beau made it big, Walker was elated. Although they were not close, it
was still exciting to see someone that he had grown up with become famous. Beau had shot to be
someone; someone that other people would look up to and idolize. Beau eventually signed a
recording contract with a studio, and started putting out music that millions of men and women alike
loved to hear. Walker followed his career religiously, buying every albums and single as it was
released. He also kept track of concerts and music festivals that Beau was involved in. One day
Walker was listening to his local country music station when he heard that

Taylor Swift: A Career In Country Music
Introduction to Taylor Swift:
Taylor Swift is a brilliant pop star that began her career in country music. She has just finished her
1989 World Tour, and continues to top charts and receive awards for the popularity of her music.
Taylor Swift is very much a reflection of American culture and her generation; she is ever changing,
thriving, and has taken charge of making a place in this world for herself. Her musical style has
changed a lot throughout the course of her career, but she has remained true to the feelings her
music evokes, therefore, her fan base has only grown with each new risk she has taken. Her "honest
lyrics about real–life events" are what keep her success going. Taylor Swift is at the peak of her
stardom, and it looks like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This song utilizes a complex mix of melody, harmony, and beats. It is also paired with creative
lyrics, and phrases that have become popular because of the song, such as, "Darling, I'm a nightmare
dressed like a daydream." This song was such an epic success because it completely succeeded at
being accessible, relatable, creative, original, but yet easy to understand. Good music is often a
reflection of culture and society at the time, which is what makes it is so successful.
The Influence of Taylor Swift:
Taylor Swift has been very influential; not only through her music, but through how she carries
herself as a person. Swift shows that it's okay to be confused, but it's important through times of
confusion and pain, to remain true to one's self. Her music is so relatable to teenage girls and young
women growing up that it makes her easy to identify as a role model and want to be like her. As a
person, she has shown that is emotional vulnerable, but strong, and both are amazing qualities to
want to have.
Musically, Taylor Swift has inspired many aspiring singer/songwriters and talented composers.
Selena Gomez admitted to finding courage to write her own music through Taylor Swift. Gomez's

Brad Paisley and Country Music Essay
When country music began in America, there were no professional musicians. The typical musician
sang only to entertain himself, his family or at local events. There is evidence of square dance–like
events as far back as the 1830s (with origins in European country dancing). At first, most country
music was either sung by itself or played on a lone fiddle or banjo. A good fiddler was a very
popular person and was often asked to perform at events ranging from weddings to cattle drives.
There was no concerted effort to preserve the songs played, but the songs that people loved lasted as
they were passed from town to town or generation to generation. Songs traveled with wandering

In other types of country music you might hear the accordion, the harmonica, the piano, washboards
or drums which didn't become popular till the 1960‘s but are used a lot in today‘s bands. Country
music began in music styles brought over by the European settlers. In medieval times, storytelling
was a tradition that allowed history to be recorded when few were able to read and write. When the
first British settlers came to America, they brought this tradition with them, along with songs they
had learned in Europe. The people who settled in the Appalachian Mountains and the West did not
have an easy life and their music was their only outlet. While country music began with ballads (a
narrative that is sung) and songs of the British Isles, it changed in content and personality as it grew
in America. The British songs were objective, often resembling gruesome stories. They had many
themes of the supernatural, avenging spirits, loves found and lost, and violent happenings. In
America, the songs became very subjective and personal, downplayed the supernatural, and, in
songs of crimes, emphasized the evil acts while minimizing the gore. When the songs had to do with
love gone bad, the American's ballad removed the violence and gruesomeness. The change may
have been due to the philosophy of the Southern lifestyle. Another characteristic of the American
ballad is the addition of moral ending to songs.

Country Music : My Home And My Family
The first aspect I think about when I listen to country music is my home and my family. Honestly, I
think that is why most people love it so much, especially in the Southeastern United States (U.S.). It
also seems to me that it is so dear to the people of the South is because country music started here. I
read up on the history of country music, and what basically happened is that a bunch of Europeans
immigrated to the United States and brought their own styles and sounds with them. All of this
mishmash gave birth to a whole new sound and lyrics that reflected the immigrant's new way of life.
I think that country music as of late has been categorized as either a bunch of hicks singing about
their mothers, dogs, and ex's or as wannabe pop singers, but in reality it is so much more. Country
music has very deep roots and even though new country singers have deviated from the traditional
strain and sound of country music, I still believe that it is one of the better types of music. I reason
that if someone grows up in the South that they are more likely to choose country music over other
kinds because it is what they grew up with and it is what they know. As someone who grew up in the
South I was predisposed to enjoy it simply because I have listened to it so much that many of my
fondest memories are permeated with the sounds of country music. Also when I listen to country
music it reminds me of my family and their favorite country songs, or if it reminds me of a relative

Religion In Country Music
One aspect that I analyzed in country music was the presence of religion. This is an issue that many
sociologists choose to analyze because of its relation to organizations and groups. In country music
there is a strong Christian presence and although it didn't occur considerably in the songs I analyzed,
it tends to be the only religion associated with country music. Religion "Plays a key role in
developing people's ideas about right and wrong" (2015; 75). This sole reason can be a major
influence in many country lyrics, as well as the culture of country music. Country music is not a
religion by any means, but the role of Christianity in the music can have a significant role in the way
listeners determine what is right and wrong. Religion's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All of these tended to have a major reoccurrence in all of the songs. The question I can now answer
is how does country music play a role into the fears and dreams of the listeners. In the lyrics there is
a certain kind of language that the artists use to try and capture an image in the listener's head. In
society, "Language gives mean to the people, objects, events, and the ideas of our lives. If fact,
language reflects and often determines reality" (2015; 30). The reality is that the language in these
songs gives to the listener can give them a dream of finding true love. The language gives hope to
the listener that there is that one person they will love out there, but this also plays into the fear of
heartbreak. Heartbreak was also discussed a great amount and is something that most people tend to
fear. Another way that these songs play towards people's fears and dreams is through social class
and money. While social class is one of the most common issues, the lyrics and videos manage to
give followers the images of how a luxurious lifestyle can lead to happiness and love. This can
definitely have a fear aspect to it as well because of how unlikely it is that a person will fall into the
social class that the songs

Like any genre of music, country music is famous for its cover tunes. Younger artists paying tribute
to legends, old songs getting a breath of fresh air, or sometimes a song is so great it takes almost
every country artist in Nashville to record it. No matter what the reason, artists will continue to
create their own unique version of timeless country songs. I have complied a list of my top favorite
country covers, why I think they are great, and why you should add them to your country music
playlist. "Crazy" was made famous in 1962 by Patsy Cline. The running joke in Nashville is How
many female country singers does it take to sing "Crazy"? Apparently all of them. I would not argue
that countless artists have covered the song, however when it comes to LeAnn Rimes' version of the
Cline hit, you can't help but turn the volume up and forget you're listening to yet another Cline
cover. Rimes does a fantastic job of emulating Cline's vocals note for note. The track stays true to its
original format, but showcases Rimes' strong vocal talent, emotions, and ability to create something
equally as timeless as the original. "Delta Dawn" was made famous by Tanya Tucker in 1972 at the
young age of 13. "Delta Dawn" has had its fair share of performers since then. In 2012 the song

The Music Of Country Music
Country Music
Country music. Just saying that word ignites a train of thought to many people to think of the deep
ole' American South and cowboys. What causes people to begin to imagine those things? From the
cowboys featuring in movies to the loud blaring music the hillbilly neighbor plays, country music
has brought its way to people around the world. From the 1920's to now Country music was one of
the first genres in modern music and is still popular today in the United States. The history of
country music is so uniquely characterized that through each part of history it changes massively.
Observing, viewing, and hearing the history of country music is the only way to see how although
other music genres seem to slowly fade away country music has still stayed strong since today.
Country music was not the first name for this genre. In the 20th century when early country music
was developed it was considered "hillbilly" music. This "hillbilly" music was derived from folk
songs and popular songs from the English Scots and Irish settlers from the Appalachians and various
regions in the South. The instruments used in early country music were the fiddle, guitar, the
autoharp and a few others. The spark of country music to the public started in 1923 when country
music was first recorded. In June 14, 1923 a man with a continuing effort to discover new acts and
reach untapped markets, Ralph Peer, found John Carson, a fiddle player, who he decided to record.

1950s Country Music
From its birth in northern Mexico and southern United States in the early 1920s, country music has
continuously brought controversy to the music industry. During the 1950s country music was mostly
conservative in regards to politics. Other topics of country music include love, middle to lower–
class life, and living in the south (Country Music). The country music of the '50s centered around
"Rockability" which was the combination of Rock–n–Roll music with Hill–Billy music (Honky
Tonk). There were traits of nearly every music genre present in the country music of the 1950s.
Those genres ranged from rhythm and blues to jazz (Lagmen). Although country music was not the
most popular music genre in the '50s, the music still influenced the American music culture in the
'50s and now. Music during the 1950s time period had many recognizable name and faces. Some of
the artists included Frank Sinatra, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley Muddy Waters, Miles Davis, Duke
Ellington, and Johnny Cash, just to name a few. From this amazing class of talented artist are the
country music stars of the '50s. The country phenoms had 70 of the top 170 songs of the 1950s

The Influence Of Country Music
Do you ever listen to Ave Maria on full blast while working out, or maybe listen to heavy metal
when you're trying to relax? The answer is most likely no. This is because music has an
unbelievable ability to set a mood, and this mood varies depending on which genre you decide to
indulge in. The components we rely on to set this mood are the lyrics, variety of instruments
involved, and the emotion behind the voice. While relaxing on the beach I prefer a country song like
"This is How We Roll" by Florida Georgia Line, whereas when I workout I prefer "Live from the
Gutter" by Future and Drake. This association is dependent on the lyrics and style of musical
performance. Country music as a whole has developed from hillbilly boogie, to honky tonk, to what
we commonly hear on the radio today as Nashville sound, or country pop. The honky tonk ... Show

In "This is How we Roll" Florida Georgia Line transitions from singing their lyrics to a country rap
where the beat slows and the lyrics are sped up on a rhyme scheme. Similarly, Future took a step
away from an overload of modulated bass to incorporate a piano rift instead. We as listeners use
these genres of music to describe the music we like to listen to. However, the spectrum is so broad
that it is important to understand what composes a specific genre. There are hundreds of sub–genres
included in the overall label of country or hip–hop music, and the list continues to expand as artists
proceed to develop new creative ideas that make it to the top of the billboards. Both of these songs
are examples of songs that swept the nation with popularity but experimented with new styles the
diverged from the norms of the genre. I believe genres will always stay true to their cultural origins;

Country Music And Community Analysis
One of the primary purposes of music, as it is a major part of culture, is to buld community
cohesion. There have been times during history, especially with the creation and rise of nations,
along with war and tragedy, that people have turned to music for comfort, inspiration, and increase
in pride for their country. Music has great symbolism behind it that can correlate to one's community
and can inspire grand emotions.
In my opinion, country music best represents that community I come from. I consider my
community, though I reside in California, to be very southern–inspired. Country music is quite
popular in the South (and throughout America) along with other music such as jazz and bluegrass.

Country Music Problems
During the 1920's, people have argued this to be known as the "Roaring 20's" because of all the new
trends that were created in different areas of culture. One of the biggest reasons for this were the
birth of new music genres such as "Country". People do love country music because of the
meanings behind every lyric of each song, but in reality country music has brought more problems
than happiness to society. Some of the reasons why country music has brought a lot of issues to
society are due to its horrible sound, the nonsense from the lyrics, and the use of weird instruments
such as an autoharp and a banjo. As a result of this combination, the percentage of suicide from all
ages has increased ever since country music was introduced. Suicide ratings have been scaring
scientists all over the world, they believe that people who listen to country music go through 5
different stages that will lead them to their death. This is the biggest problem that country music has
caused throughout the course of its history. Not only has it scared the population of big nations, but
it has also scarred scientists because they have estimated that humanity could become extinct in the
next 30 years. Ever since country music was introduced to society, the percentage of suicide has
increased every year by 3% worldwide. In countries such as Germany, Honduras, Uzbekistan and a
few others have banned country music because it has drastically decreased their population by 25%.

Argumentative Essay: Country Music
Country music is amazing and nobody can convince me otherwise. Apparently, a lot of people these
days don't like being told a story through music. They prefer listening to a common beat and lyrics
that anyone could come up with. They think that country music is all about the same thing when
really it tells stories of everyone. People have just stopped listening to the lyrics, because who cares
anyways? They have weird accents and I don't want to be associated with white trash anyways. They
bash on the culture because it is not extravagant enough. They clearly have never been to a country

Oh the accents. Everyone complains about the twang and lack of proper vowels, but that's what
makes it what it is. Like how rappers have the talent of talking fast or opera singers have incredibly
tall vowels. It is just what makes the music unique. There is nothing like that anywhere else in the
world. Rappers collaborate with pop sings and rockers do the same whichever way you play the
cards. If a country artist did that, then there would be a distinct difference in the two sounds
produced in a single song. With combinations of other musicians it just sounds like another popular
song. The accents help make the music what it is. The accents themselves create a homely feeling
and are the foundation of the genre

Sunday after church, on a quiet balmy summer day, dinner is fresh, hot, and ready for immaculate
consumption. After clearing the table, the men adjourn to the front porch to talk politics, church, and
relax after a long week of satisfying the burdensome requirements of familial responsibilities. After
all, what man is there who would not rather be fishing? The women, on the other hand, scurry in the
kitchen, do the dishes, clean up, and put things away; while repeating the local gossip about who is

gambling, circuses, swearing, theater–going, billiards, baseball, low–cut dresses, society balls, novel

where church activities could be commonplace. In 1891, a new venue was erected and named the
Union Gospel Tabernacle. The building, with its upper deck (originally called The Confederate
Gallery) was completed in 1897 and seated 2362 people via church pews. After the death of Ryman
in 1904, the management of the meetinghouse was turned over to Mrs. Lula Naff. The Tennesee

The Ryman's classical music and theatrical glory days were conducted under the tutelage of Mrs.
Lula Naff. During Naff's tenure between 1904 and 1955, the legendary theater manager brought
such luminaries as Sarah Bernhardt, Enrico Caruso, and Marian Anderson to the Ryman stage.

It seems somewhat strange that the messages of Evangelist Jones, who preached against theatre and
dancing would be so quickly ignored after Ryman's death. This transition, however, set the stage for
the success the auditorium would enjoy later. By 1925, a new invention was sweeping the nation.

Like for example country music talks about love, kids, and other deep meaning things. It is also
important to discus this because people don't pay attention to the actual meaning of the song. Some

Bluegrass music is often know and shown difference by it's high lonesome sound. Bill Monroe, also
know as the "Father of Bluegrass," would often say he would sing it as high as he could then go on

seems to contradict itself when it ends up being used at dance parties. With all this stuff going on in
country music it was really starting to get noticed. Around the 1930s to 40s Hollywood started to

Evolution Of Country Music
When looking at country music from the early 20th century, to what it is today there has been some
change but most of the concepts have stayed the same. Much of the country from the early times had
music about religion, or hardships that were being faced. This is the same as in the present, there are
many songs about turning to religion to find hope. There are also the instruments that are used, the
bajo, and other stereotypical country instruments are still used to today. This sound that they have,
and that these instruments make are what really categorize the music as country. The sound of
country has been modified but the underlying sounds have stayed the same, and the messages that
are being sung about have been consistent throughout time. This shows that country is very much

The feelings of comfort and unity transcend the essence of what country music represents.
However, the power struggle between music executives and artists compromising these markers has
been an ongoing battle. The commercialization of country music tries to implement these markers
while brining to light a new sound for country music, The Nashville Sound. This new sound of
country music introduces background singers, pianos, polished voices and much more sophisticated
types of enhancements. Hank Williams, and Patsy Cline were two artists that thrived within the era
of the Nashville Sound despite the influences of commercialism. The concept of a big country
showcase striped music of its roots and deprived fans of what they really yearned for, simplicity and
genuineness. The simplicity of earlier country music is undermined by the technological interference
of its instrumentation. Simplicity meant one voice with a banjo, guitar, or harmonica
accompaniment. The early country music industry presented the world with an artist just the way he
or she was, no glitz, glamour or frills.
Within the new era of the Nashville Sound it brings along with it overbearing producers and record
labels with their own hidden agendas. "He has cooked up a sound all his own: hot, fierce,

Wilkinson's Argument About Country Music Ideology

  • 1. Summary Of Country Music By Will Wilkinson Crafting an Argument: Wilkinson and Country Music In Will Wilkinson's Country Music, Openness to Experience, and the Psychology of Culture War, he argues that country music itself is an ideology. He achieves this by explaining how country music's supporters and listeners are primarily conservative individuals whose happiness comes from the "enchantment of everyday life" lives depend on and is a "bulwark against cultural change'. Wilkinson begins his essay with a statement that underlines the tone for the rest of his essay of country music, that it is an "ideology". Wilkinson quotes Dana Carney to state "liberals are more open minded, creative, curious and novelty seeking. Whereas conservatives are more orderly, conventional, and better organized". ... A counter argument added to Wilkinson's essay will let itself be presented as a more solid argumentative paper rather than what at points seem as bickering essay. Wilkinson's first piece of evidence "one boy, one girl" by Collin Reye seems obsolete. In fact until this essay by Wilkinson I myself have never heard of the song ; bearing in mind the town I come from Uvalde, Texas, has the only FM radio station for 30 miles, and is named "104.9 Coyote Country". I believe Wilkinson's essay does make great points but a counter argument of how country music is now seemingly changing to what Wilkinson would claim is more of a liberal sound. In fact driving in my home the other day and listening to "today's country hits", "this is how we roll" by Florida Georgia line (another big name in today's country music) played from the radio". With the words "The mixtape's got a little Hank, little Drake, a little something bumping, thump, thumping on the wheel ride...we hanging 'round singing out everything on the radio". Something such as this piece of evidence would support Wilkinson's argument on "hot blooded kids having a good old time", but also pave way to the new a new theory that perhaps country music is moving towards a more liberal spectrum. Wilkinson's essay is written in a political stance but uses country music as a vessel to achieve and categorizing how conservatives ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Country Vs Pop Music Country vs. Pop: Which One Is On Top? Country and Pop music are both popular genres, but which one is better? This decision is tough to make since there are various similarities of to why both are great genres of music. There is also a variety of factors to show the differences between these two genres as well. Research has shown light to the conclusion of to which genre exceeds the other. The things that both genres can be judged on is how they came to be, their fanbase, and the top hits. The origination of Country, compared to Pop music is very different. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to the iTunes charts the number one music video that is taking over the charts at the moment is Taylor Swift's song called "Blank Space". Throughout the list there is not a country song until number twenty–one with "Girl In A Country Song" by Maddie and Tae. Between the two it clearly shows that the videos are different in the ways they were filmed and how they portrayed the song and it's meaning. Taylor Swift went for a video that was like a story and went along with the song, while Maddie and Tae's music video showed that they were trying to prove a point about the stereotype of a country girl. According to the iTune's charts for the songs, "Blank Space" by Taylor Swift was number one also. A country song was located farther down in the list at number thirty–one with "Shotgun Rider" by Tim McGraw. Both genres are making it onto the charts, but country music is lower in the ranking compared to the pop genre. The results of these rankings are from online purchases, which is why these rankings may be biased to some extent. The reason for this is, yet again, that the pop genre fan base is more electronically educated than the country fan base and it may be a point as to why songs are ranked the way they ... The Country Music Has Changed Over The Past Decades Country music has changed over the past decades, as all music does, stepping away from the focus on freedom, family, friends, faith, and home, to songs about women, drinking, dirt roads, and big trucks. Many people feel that this has led to the objectification of women, creating an unrealistic expectation for women to live up to. Most artist have followed the lead of this and are writing more and more songs about these issues to stay with the trends, as many people enjoy this twist because it is coming with incorporations of other styles of music. Country music used to stand out as one of the only types of music that was not vulgar and explicit and was easily identifiable, though lately, that has not been the case. The latest trend of country music has people on both sides of the fence as it continually evolves into amix of several genres and expands further from its roots."The country music genre has gone through quite a transformation in the past couple of years" (Grady Smith) as stated in an Entertainment Weekly article. • 13. Gender Inequality In Country Music Walking the Line of Gender Inequality Country music is a staple of American culture, however it does not properly represent over half of its audience. Female musicians in the country music genre are heavily outweighed by their male counterparts in terms of radio airplay and sales. Why do the successful country music artists not reflect the demographic of the audience? Has representation of each gender in country music always been as skewed as it is today? Female artists in country music should receive the same opportunities or treatment from the industry that male artists do. Country music originated in the 1920s in Tennessee. Shania Twain, one of the most popular artists in the 1990s, "Not only is [...] country music's most successful female artist, she also recorded the genre's most successful album of all time, Come On Over in 1997" (McCarthy, par. 3). Taylor Swift's 2013 arena tour to support her last country album was the most lucrative tour in North America that year, bringing in more than $113 million in ticket revenue (Sisario, par. 16). Critically, women have fared extremely well in recent years. A movement to make music acknowledging the genre's roots has been lead by a group of female country musicians– to the admiration of critics and fans alike, if they get the chance to hear the music. Since 2014, seven of fifteen nominees for the Grammy Award for country album of the year have been women, with two of the three winners being female (Leight, par. 28–30). If women are given the opportunity to be heard on the radio and develop a fanbase, the chances to achieve a high level of prosperity are just as high as their male counterparts'. • 15. The Characteristics Of Country Music : Cowboys And Kisses Sophia Fann Kathy Christopher ENGL 1101–20730 3 Oct 2017 Cowboys and Kisses Country music was everything in Walker's life. He listened to it religiously, whether he was out in the fields on the tractor or just in the house, cooking dinner. He loved the twang of the guitars, the steady beat of the drums, and the baritone drawl of the man singing about his lost love or his truck. Most of all, he loved the man who sang them, a country singer named Beau. Beau grew up just down the road from Walker. He had been friendly to Walker, but they could never truly call each other friends. Walker had subtly watched him from afar. He watched Beau flirt with girls and sing them songs; but, he also noticed how he'd look at boys when he thought no one else was looking. They lived in a small, southern town where most people did not accept lifestyles outside of the norm. When Beau made it big, Walker was elated. Although they were not close, it was still exciting to see someone that he had grown up with become famous. Beau had shot to be someone; someone that other people would look up to and idolize. Beau eventually signed a recording contract with a studio, and started putting out music that millions of men and women alike loved to hear. Walker followed his career religiously, buying every albums and single as it was released. He also kept track of concerts and music festivals that Beau was involved in. Alan Jackson and Luke Bryan are both very known country singers, but are different when it comes down to managing their careers. Jackson started his career in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1979. He has sold fifteen different albums, eighty million records, and sets the record for having the most nominations in a single year. She has just finished her 1989 World Tour, and continues to top charts and receive awards for the popularity of her music. Taylor Swift is very much a reflection of American culture and her generation; she is ever changing, thriving, and has taken charge of making a place in this world for herself. Her musical style has changed a lot throughout the course of her career, but she has remained true to the feelings her music evokes, therefore, her fan base has only grown with each new risk she has taken. Good music is often a reflection of culture and society at the time, which is what makes it is so successful. The Influence of Taylor Swift: Taylor Swift has been very influential; not only through her music, but through how she carries herself as a person. Swift shows that it's okay to be confused, but it's important through times of confusion and pain, to remain true to one's self. Her music is so relatable to teenage girls and young women growing up that it makes her easy to identify as a role model and want to be like her. As a person, she has shown that is emotional vulnerable, but strong, and both are amazing qualities to want to have. • 21. Brad Paisley and Country Music Essay When country music began in America, there were no professional musicians. The typical musician sang only to entertain himself, his family or at local events. There is evidence of square dance–like events as far back as the 1830s (with origins in European country dancing). At first, most country music was either sung by itself or played on a lone fiddle or banjo. A good fiddler was a very popular person and was often asked to perform at events ranging from weddings to cattle drives. There was no concerted effort to preserve the songs played, but the songs that people loved lasted as they were passed from town to town or generation to generation. Songs traveled with wandering minstrels and soldiers as well as those who moved across the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In other types of country music you might hear the accordion, the harmonica, the piano, washboards or drums which didn't become popular till the 1960‘s but are used a lot in today‘s bands. Country music began in music styles brought over by the European settlers. In medieval times, storytelling was a tradition that allowed history to be recorded when few were able to read and write. When the first British settlers came to America, they brought this tradition with them, along with songs they had learned in Europe. The people who settled in the Appalachian Mountains and the West did not have an easy life and their music was their only outlet. While country music began with ballads (a narrative that is sung) and songs of the British Isles, it changed in content and personality as it grew in America. The British songs were objective, often resembling gruesome stories. They had many themes of the supernatural, avenging spirits, loves found and lost, and violent happenings. In America, the songs became very subjective and personal, downplayed the supernatural, and, in songs of crimes, emphasized the evil acts while minimizing the gore. When the songs had to do with love gone bad, the American's ballad removed the violence and gruesomeness. The change may have been due to the philosophy of the Southern lifestyle. Another characteristic of the American ballad is the addition of moral ending to songs. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Country Music : My Home And My Family The first aspect I think about when I listen to country music is my home and my family. Honestly, I think that is why most people love it so much, especially in the Southeastern United States (U.S.). It also seems to me that it is so dear to the people of the South is because country music started here. I read up on the history of country music, and what basically happened is that a bunch of Europeans immigrated to the United States and brought their own styles and sounds with them. All of this mishmash gave birth to a whole new sound and lyrics that reflected the immigrant's new way of life. I think that country music as of late has been categorized as either a bunch of hicks singing about their mothers, dogs, and ex's or as wannabe pop singers, but in reality it is so much more. Country music has very deep roots and even though new country singers have deviated from the traditional strain and sound of country music, I still believe that it is one of the better types of music. I reason that if someone grows up in the South that they are more likely to choose country music over other kinds because it is what they grew up with and it is what they know. As someone who grew up in the South I was predisposed to enjoy it simply because I have listened to it so much that many of my fondest memories are permeated with the sounds of country music. Also when I listen to country music it reminds me of my family and their favorite country songs, or if it reminds me of a relative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That is what country music legend Troyal Garth Brooks, or Garth Brooks, as most call him, has worked toward all his life. Garth has had some disappointments on his road to country music stardom, but he has worked through them and has prevailed. • 29. Religion In Country Music One aspect that I analyzed in country music was the presence of religion. This is an issue that many sociologists choose to analyze because of its relation to organizations and groups. In country music there is a strong Christian presence and although it didn't occur considerably in the songs I analyzed, it tends to be the only religion associated with country music. Religion "Plays a key role in developing people's ideas about right and wrong" (2015; 75). This sole reason can be a major influence in many country lyrics, as well as the culture of country music. Country music is not a religion by any means, but the role of Christianity in the music can have a significant role in the way listeners determine what is right and wrong. Religion's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All of these tended to have a major reoccurrence in all of the songs. The question I can now answer is how does country music play a role into the fears and dreams of the listeners. In the lyrics there is a certain kind of language that the artists use to try and capture an image in the listener's head. In society, "Language gives mean to the people, objects, events, and the ideas of our lives. If fact, language reflects and often determines reality" (2015; 30). The reality is that the language in these songs gives to the listener can give them a dream of finding true love. The language gives hope to the listener that there is that one person they will love out there, but this also plays into the fear of heartbreak. Heartbreak was also discussed a great amount and is something that most people tend to fear. Another way that these songs play towards people's fears and dreams is through social class and money. While social class is one of the most common issues, the lyrics and videos manage to give followers the images of how a luxurious lifestyle can lead to happiness and love. This can definitely have a fear aspect to it as well because of how unlikely it is that a person will fall into the social class that the songs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

No matter what the reason, artists will continue to create their own unique version of timeless country songs. What causes people to begin to imagine those things? From the cowboys featuring in movies to the loud blaring music the hillbilly neighbor plays, country music has brought its way to people around the world. From the 1920's to now Country music was one of the first genres in modern music and is still popular today in the United States. The history of country music is so uniquely characterized that through each part of history it changes massively. Observing, viewing, and hearing the history of country music is the only way to see how although other music genres seem to slowly fade away country music has still stayed strong since today. Country music was not the first name for this genre. In the 20th century when early country music was developed it was considered "hillbilly" music. This "hillbilly" music was derived from folk songs and popular songs from the English Scots and Irish settlers from the Appalachians and various regions in the South. The instruments used in early country music were the fiddle, guitar, the autoharp and a few others. The spark of country music to the public started in 1923 when country music was first recorded. In June 14, 1923 a man with a continuing effort to discover new acts and reach untapped markets, Ralph Peer, found John Carson, a fiddle player, who he decided to record. This started the ... This is because music has an unbelievable ability to set a mood, and this mood varies depending on which genre you decide to indulge in. The components we rely on to set this mood are the lyrics, variety of instruments involved, and the emotion behind the voice. Charlie Pride jokingly referred to this as the "pigmentation situation" (The Root). Musicologists such as Richard Peterson and Paul Di Maggio have theorized that country music is the embodiment of southern white pride. They have added post war northern migration enabled regional country music to be exported to other areas of the United States, especially centers of industrial production: "The argument is that white southerners streamed to northern and West Coast war–plants, while those in the armed forces carried the music around the world, and nonsoutherners stationed in the South were exposed to commercial country music for the first time. Furthermore, the warborn affluence made it economically feasible to merchandise commercial country music nationally for the first time" (Peterson, Di Maggio, 500). The feelings of comfort and unity transcend the essence of what country music represents. However, the power struggle between music executives and artists compromising these markers has been an ongoing battle. The commercialization of country music tries to implement these markers while brining to light a new sound for country music, The Nashville Sound. This new sound of country music introduces background singers, pianos, polished voices and much more sophisticated types of enhancements. Hank Williams, and Patsy Cline were two artists that thrived within the era of the Nashville Sound despite the influences of commercialism. The concept of a big country showcase striped music of its roots and deprived fans of what they really yearned for, simplicity and genuineness. The simplicity of earlier country music is undermined by the technological interference of its instrumentation. Simplicity meant one voice with a banjo, guitar, or harmonica accompaniment. The early country music industry presented the world with an artist just the way he or she was, no glitz, glamour or frills.
