A film entangled in secrets and lies… ‘Jade’ will make you
weep in five minutes!
Films are most successful when the audience feel a variety of
emotions and feel empathic towards established characters. A
short film that challenges the themes of sexuality, bereavement
and adoption all in five minutes should be applauded for its
intense narrative and creativity. Yet why would we want to put
ourselves through this?
Kieran Morris’ short film ‘Jade’ instantly makes the audience
feel sympathetic towards a mother and daughter who are
entangled in secrets and lies relating to both their past and the
future. It is a must-watch film that explores the struggles many
homosexual people still face despite an increasingly open-
minded world of liberation and personal identity. It
demonstrates how scared someone can feel when being in this
situation, not feeling comfortable because they are different
from social-norms.
From the moment in which the audience meet
protagonist character Jade (Anita Brahimi), the
audience feel emotionally attached to her like a mother
figure; who in the film is more focused on her career
than her children. Brahimi’s acting style along with
Potter (Olly, Jade’s brother) and Westwood’s (Jade’s
mother) is phenomenal. They create a dysfunctional
family dynamic which by the end of the film doesn’t
even exist.
The camera operation and sound quality of the film is incredible. It enhances the emotions
felt by the characters and really draws you into the short film. The extreme close-up of frosty
weather is in particularly impressive and provides a cold, harsh essence to the film to match
the poignant storyline created and the emotions felt by the characters. This film is truly
emotional and heart-breaking.
