1. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Social group definition - People who share some social relation
Who is the main social group within my 2 minute opening?
Firstly my film is aimed at an audience both male and female, aged 18+, however
this isn't to say that younger people won't enjoy it. But I have managed to represent
a social grouping of young independent white males prominently within my film.
The use of Mise-en-scene in my film opening aided my way of representing social
groupings. The first shot is of a wide shot where my hero is looking out onto an
empty pathway, thus making him appear strong and purposeful, due to the fact all
of him is in the shot. This is a lot like the film ‘Watchman’ with the character
Rorschach as he equally has the same normal everyday man look much like my
character. This then can be relatable to the male audience as they feel they can see
themselves or remember times where they too have been isolated or alone. It then
cuts to a close up of his feet walking which suggests a semantic field of hunters,
this is because of his combat boots, his gun and although the purpose isn’t
necessarily to hunt but to find supplies. This is like the film ‘I am Legend’ as Will
Smith is on the hunt for food. This could make the audience reflect on when they
once have been in a situation where they have become so desperate they do
anything they can to aid themselves. As my character is meant to be of an older age
(20-25) I wanted him to look independent therefore I had him on his own
throughout his monologue.
When representingpower I used lower cameraangles such as low angle shots to make the
character appear bigger and stronger. For example when the mugger attacks the hero I go
to a low angle of the mugger being over the top of my hero as at the moment in the film
he is the dominant one. I believe a character like the Mugger can be social relatable to the
audience, female as well as mainly male. This is because as he only has a stereotypical
normal boys top onit can represent atime where the audience has had very little to help
them through hard times. Also the fact that the Mugger doesn’t have any family could
also communicate to a societywhere people don’t have anyone. However in order to

2. show his power at that time most of my shots before hand are centredso people are more
able to identifywho is more dominant and when. I also show my hero being the weaker
when I use a mid-shot lookingdown on Gideon(Max the hero) which makes him seem
the weaker comparedto will (the Mugger).
This is ironic as Gideonhas a power which can overrule the mugger and kill him,
thereforetheoreticallytheypower lies with the hero. I do however wish I had shown my
hero as being stronger via using mise-en-scene. For example insteadof keeping it central
I wish I did a shot where the camerais lookingup at the hero from the Muggers
perspective, and I wish I had used a low angled shot behind the Hero when his is using
his telekinesis power. As there is violence involved already within the 2 minute opening I
chose to already have an older target audience. I also think it’s more important to have an
older audience as the content of the monologue couldbe confusingand hard to
understand for younger people. For example “I witnessedthe true brutality of the human
race, trying to claim me for their own.”
Fashion is a cyclic nature and thereforeas the film is set in the present and so is the
2 minute opening and the rest of the film will be in the past the costume wouldn't
be different from today’s styles. Because it’s acouple of days or maybe weeks into the
past then the clothing wouldn't have changed this is due to the current problems
in the film. It’s similar to today’s fashionas the boys are both wearing black trousers and
a normal plain white top. Stereotypically this is what a male would wear normally. Both
sets of characters withinmy film opening represent particular social groups suchas
confident or desperate males. This could be relatable to women as theycould have also
been in a situationa lot like my characters are in. However as the characters are males it’s
more approachable to them. My Target audience couldrealte to getting into trouble much
like my Mugger has done.
My target audience is representedthroughthe use of young males as this is shown
through their clothing and actionwhich are much more mature as in masculine. Whereas
a younger age below 18 years oldwould not understand much of the concept to the film,
and would enjoya more simplyjust actionfilm like Transformers. Many of my target
audience may also want to be like some of the characters inmy film however wouldn’t be
able to become these charactersor even be able to obtain their lifestyles due to it being
dangerous and tough.
