1. Thousands of kids die every year as a result of parents
having guns inside of the same household as young
children. Children are young and naive, they don’t always
know the possible dangers they come across within a
household. Parents are responsible for the welfare of their
child. Although this may not be an immediate threat to the
safety of all children, it is not something that we should be
oblivious to.
2. University Of Michigan
University of Michigan collected information on child
deaths and incidents in 2002.
The information was from 1999
3,385 Children between the ages of 0-19 were killed by
gun incidents.
These incidents included 1,000+ suicides, almost 2,000
homicides, 214 accidents, and 83 undetermined
489 of these deaths occurred in those under the age of
14.
3. ABC Experiment
The late night news on ABC decided to conduct and
experiment to show how real and immediate the
threat to your child’s safety really is. They spoke to a
parent who had lost her child previously due to an
accident between her son and her son’s friend. Also to
prove how the child should not be to blame for the
accident as they are usually not responsible and don’t
know any better.

There are more than 1,000 suicides per year because of children bearing
weapons. The risk of suicide is increased by 5 times, when there is a
weapon at home. The best thing to do is to not purchase a gun to begin
with, or if you do have one at home then you should make sure it is
concealed and in a safe non-reachable location to children.
5. Why is This a Justice Issue For Me?
As a child I grew up in a rough time period, in a rough neighborhood.
My family had issues with other neighbors. Nothing out of the ordinary.
However that soon escalated and bigger problems came up. During this
confrontation my cousins was shot 3 times and killed in front of her
home by a 16 year old girl who is still serving her 17 year sentence. This
happened in 2002, but of course everyone is still affected by it. The girl
was charged as a minor. I know the pain of losing someone due to young
children and teens being ignorant and naïve. There isn’t anyone to
directly blame, but I do know that if her parents were to never have that
gun in the house to begin with, this problem could have been avoided.
Raising awareness is important. Preventing this from happening is ever
more important.
6. In The End
Guns have proven to be a problem for households and for child & teen
safety in the United States. Parents should take responsibility for their
actions and the actions of their children. If you have a gun in your house,
put it in a lockbox, hidden, and away from your child. If you don’t have a
gun at home, then you should keep it that way.
