Is multimedia violence a problem or not?
With the development of multimedia, more and more children are attracted to
television programs, computers and other advance technologies. According to
Kaiser Family Foundation, kids are watching 7 hours and 38 minutes television
every day on average, that is equivalent to a full time job. In the TV shows, or
the computer games that the children are interested, it is hard to avoid any
violent scenes, in fact, it is impossible to avoid. Even the famous cartoon Tom
and Jerry involves violence scenes such as punching or burning. Some people
suggest that multimedia violence does not affect children’s behavior, but I
believe that violence scenes more or less affect children, affect them to be
more aggressive.
There are several reasons to support why multimedia violence does not make
children aggressive. When children are watching media violence, they learn the
result from being violent and thus they won’t do it themselves. For some kids,
when they see a bloody scene on TV, they get scared of the blood, and they will
try to avoid that situation to happen on themselves, and that even helps the kids
to step away from violence. According to the director of the Ion & Lamb Project,
an average child has seen 100,000 acts of violence include 8,000 murders by

2. the time they leave elementary school. However, on top of all the violence
scene the kids has watched, crime rate in U.S went down than before. Another
point that proves media violence doesn’t affect kids being irritable is that usually
the place where a lot of crime happens are the poor areas that can not even
afford electronic products. This proves that multimedia violence does not make
the kids violent, it is actually a release so they won’t feel aggressive.
Although quite a few arguments proves that media violence does not affect
children, but more evidence proves that media violence will create a violence
impact on children. In America, 61% of lead stories on the news involve
violence and danger. Watching too much violence causes children not to look
for the real cause of the problem, they will only solve the problem with violence.
That is, when a conflict happens, people’s first instinct will be to start a fight,
instead of looking for the root of that conflict. Next, when children watch too
much violence scene through media, they will slowly to think that being violent
is the normal way of solving problems. For instance, violent video games will
make the kids start to think killing is normal, the other person might not even
feel the pain. Some kids even think that people won’t die after you shoot them,
because in the video games the characters can always revive. Also, children
can get ideas and inspiration from the violence scenes, and try to do it
themselves. In United States the annual white homicide rate increased by 93%,
from 3 homicides per 100,000 white population in 1945 to 5.8 per 100,000 in

3. 1974. However in South Africa where television was banned, the white
homicide rate decreased by 7%, from 2.7 homicide per 100,000 white
population in 1943 to 2.5 per 100,000 in 1974. Therefore, multimedia violence
does affect children’s behaviors and cause violence in real life.
In conclusion, although media violence can be a release for aggression, but it
more or less creates an impact on the children’s mind. If that impact become
serious after when they grow up, the kids might start some serious crime.
Therefore, I think that multimedia violence does cause violence in real life.
Target audience= Teenagers who usually play online games and video games.
Where will it pop up= The advertisement will pop up on the side and top of a
web page, of popular social net works, where teenagers spend most of their
times on. Such as Facebook, Twitter, Renren etc.
