Class 9th
 What is health
Health, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), is "a state
of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the
absence of disease or infirmity."
 Classification of health
 We classified health in two type
1.Personal health 2.community health
 Health of a individual depends upon the following :
1. Physical environment
2. Social environment
3. Mental state of a individual
4. Economic condition
5. Social economy and harmony
 so personal and community both effect us.
What is a disease ?
Disease: A disease is a particular abnormal condition that negatively
affects the structure or function of part or all of an organism, and
that is not due to any external injury .Diseases are often construed
as medical conditions that are associated with specific symptoms
and signs.
Types of disease.
Type of disease on the basis of time
duration.
On the basis of time duration there are two type of disease:
1. ACUTE DISEASE: some disease that last for very short period of time
or with treatment they are cured in a short time ,these are called
acute disease. Example: cold , flu etc.
2. CHRONIC DISEASE: A chronic condition is a human health condition
or disease that is persistent or otherwise long-lasting in its effects or
a disease that comes with long time. The term chronic is often
applied when the course of the disease lasts for more than three
months . Example: T.B. ,Cancer, Diabeties , Asthama , Arthritis etc.
Communicable and non
communicable disease1. Communicable disease{infectious} : A communicable disease is one
that is spread from one person to another through a variety of ways that
include: contact with blood and bodily fluids; breathing in an airborne
virus; or by being bitten by an insect. Example- chickenpox , malaria ,
rabies flu ,fever ,cough etc.
2. Non communicable disease{non-infectious} : A non-communicable
disease (NCD) is a disease that is not spread directly from one person to
another. NCDs include autoimmune diseases, strokes, most heart
diseases, most cancers, diabetes, chronic kidney
disease, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, cataracts etc.
Some disease andthere symptoms andcure
Malaria :Malaria is a disease caused by a parasite, transmitted by the bite
of infected mosquitoes. Malaria produces recurrent attacks of chills and
fever.
Symptoms :
• Moderate to severe shaking chills
• High fever
• Sweating
• Headache
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
Cause: Malaria is caused by a type of microscopic parasite that's
transmitted most commonly by mosquito bites.{female anopheles
mosquito}
Tuberculosis:
Tuberculosis (TB) is generally defined as an dangerous bacterial infectious disease
caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which most often affects the lungs and later it
might spread to different parts of the body.
Symptoms:
• Coughing up blood (mucus from deep inside the lungs)
• A bad cough that lasts 3 weeks or longer.
• Weakness or fatigue.
• Sweating at night.
• Pain in the chest.
• Weight loss.
• No appetite.
• Chills and Fever.
Cause :
• Mycobacterium bovis
• Mycobacterium canettii
• Mycobacterium microti
• Mycobacterium africanum
Typhoid :
Typhoid is an infectious bacterial disease that mainly spreads through
contaminated food or water. It can also spread due to the poor hygienic
conditions.
 Symptoms:
• Malaise or weakness
• Loss of appetite
• Abdominal pain
• Ulcers
• Skin rashes
 Causes :
It is caused by the bacteria Salmonella typhi.
Cholera
Cholera is an infection of the small intestine by some strains of
the bacterium Vibrio cholera
 Symptoms :
• Rapid heart rate
• Loss of skin elasticity (the ability to return to original position quickly
if pinched)
• Dry mucous membranes, including the inside of the mouth, throat,
nose, and eyelids
• Low blood pressure
• Thirst
• Muscle cramps
• Cause : it is caused by vibrio cholera bacteria.
