(1999: 6) and
Entwistle (1998:206)
cognitive learning
style can be classified
into the following
model:
Global/Analytical
Global learners prefer to imply to
use wider conceptual categories
and are more ready to acquire
thematic. They like to hear the
main idea first and then learn all of
the facts
Analytic learners prefer to connect
things concept. They like to hear
the fact first, learn things step by
step, and learn from list and
outlines.
Field Independent/Dependent
Field independent learner can point
the embedded the figure without
distracted by the surroundings.
They involve analyzing and
structuring incoming information.
Field dependent learners accept
global information and they have
inability in point structure. They
prefer to think globally and have
tendencies to socialize with other
people
Reflective learner encourage work
analytically and cautiously. They
are better in accuracy and make a
calculated decision but rather slow.
Impulsive learners prefer to work
fast but lack in identifying figure.
They simplify hurriedly so it caused
more mistakes and tend to choose
language or humanity courses

Based on the research of
the way people
communicate, there are
three major models and
three combination of
learning style (Pritchard,
2009: 44).
• Auditory learners’ learn
best by hearing. They have
good memory in auditory,
discussing, lecturing,
interviewing. They like
sequence, repetition, and
summary.
• They are suggested to read
the text loudly with several
intonation to stress some
point and to relate
information and do not
forget to record it
Auditory Learner
• Visual learners tend to
learn by seeing. They have
good visual recall and
prefer to be presented
visually, present in
diagrams, graphics,
posters, etc.
• They are suggested to
make a note using colored
markers and create their
own color code. Each color
has its own description.
Visual Learners
• Multi-sensory learners
learn best when three of
type of sensory types
(visual, auditory,
kinesthetic) are involved
together in learning
process.
• They can be lectured by
using combination of
presentation model such as
using picture, recording,
and also body movement.
Multi Sensory Learners
• Kinesthetic learners tend to
learn by doing. . They
usually need movement in
learning process like going
back and forth. When
working on several projects
they need to take break
between each

on the construct by
Carl Jung (Fauziati,
2015:17)
Extroversion/Introversion
• Extroverts commonly are sociable,
like to do many things, have many
relationships, like to talk, like
grouping.
• They need stimulation, take
chances, often act on moment, and
generally impulsive individuals
• Introverts commonly are quiet
person, introspective, food and
book rather than people.
• They like to keep distance except
with close friends, they are good
planner but they cannot believe in
people easily
Tolerance of Ambiguity
Tolerance of ambiguity focuses on the cognitive
willingness to tolerate inevitable ideas with their
belief system.
Tolerant learners usually are open-minded people
and like to accept new things and not bothered by
ambiguity.
In learning foreign language, they can receive
information easily in target language but they
should be careful of incorrect information
Left and Right
Brain Functioning • Right hemisphere specialized for synthesis.
The learners have quite limited ability in
language, dominant in space orientation,
artistic interest, craft, image, remembering
face.
• They tend to more holistic and relational,
and work in simultaneously mode.
• Left hemisphere specialized in analytic and
logical thinking and good in verbal and
mathematical function.
• They tend to work sequentially and operate
linearly. Every informations processed
logically based on the order.
Pedagogical Implication
• Language learning style is one of the most
influencing factors in language learning.
• learning style awareness can influence pedagogy
such as the ways teachers choose to teach,
understand learner’s needs, differentiate materials.
• It is also beneficial for the leaners because they can
choose most appropriate learning style that match to
the learning that is being undertaken.
Conclusion
Learning styles are individuals’
preference to acquire and learn thing
in the most comfortable ways.
Generally, there arethree major types
such as: cognitive, sensory, and
personality.
Teacher can use various strategies and
then modify teaching task to
accommodate various student’s
learning style.

  • 3. Notion on Learning Style Do people learn in same way? learning style is individual preference to acquire and learn thing in the most comfortable ways. Learning style vs learning strategy? Learning style is focused on the person while strategy focused on the task.

  • 5. Cognitive Learning Style Field Independent/ Dependent Global/ Holistic Reflective/ Impulsive Cognitive theory considers learning according to mental processes. Motivation is also key to learning. According to Reid (1999: 6) and Entwistle (1998:206) cognitive learning style can be classified into the following model:
  • 6. Global/Analytical Global learners prefer to imply to use wider conceptual categories and are more ready to acquire thematic. They like to hear the main idea first and then learn all of the facts Analytic learners prefer to connect things concept. They like to hear the fact first, learn things step by step, and learn from list and outlines.
  • 7. Field Independent/Dependent Field independent learner can point the embedded the figure without distracted by the surroundings. They involve analyzing and structuring incoming information. Field dependent learners accept global information and they have inability in point structure. They prefer to think globally and have tendencies to socialize with other people
  • 8. Reflective learner encourage work analytically and cautiously. They are better in accuracy and make a calculated decision but rather slow. Impulsive learners prefer to work fast but lack in identifying figure. They simplify hurriedly so it caused more mistakes and tend to choose language or humanity courses Reflective/Impulsive

Sensory Learning Style Auditory Learner Visual Learner Kinesthetic Learner Multi-Sensory Learner Sensory learning style deals with most comfortable physical, percepttual learning channels (oxford, 2002:360) Based on the research of the way people communicate, there are three major models and three combination of learning style (Pritchard, 2009: 44).
  • 10. • Auditory learners’ learn best by hearing. They have good memory in auditory, discussing, lecturing, interviewing. They like sequence, repetition, and summary. • They are suggested to read the text loudly with several intonation to stress some point and to relate information and do not forget to record it Auditory Learner • Visual learners tend to learn by seeing. They have good visual recall and prefer to be presented visually, present in diagrams, graphics, posters, etc. • They are suggested to make a note using colored markers and create their own color code.   • 11. • Multi-sensory learners learn best when three of type of sensory types (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) are involved together in learning process. • They can be lectured by using combination of presentation model such as using picture, recording, and also body movement. Personality Learning Style Extrovertion/ Introversion Tolerance of Ambiguity Left and Right Brain Function Personality learning style is categorized into three major type such as extroversion/ introversion, tolerance of ambiguity, left/right brain functioning. This model is based on the construct by Carl Jung (Fauziati, 2015:17)

Extroversion/Introversion • Extroverts commonly are sociable, like to do many things, have many relationships, like to talk, like grouping. • They need stimulation, take chances, often act on moment, and generally impulsive individuals • Introverts commonly are quiet person, introspective, food and book rather than people. • They like to keep distance except with close friends, they are good planner but they cannot believe in people easily
  • 14. Tolerance of Ambiguity Tolerance of ambiguity focuses on the cognitive willingness to tolerate inevitable ideas with their belief system. Tolerant learners usually are open-minded people and like to accept new things and not bothered by ambiguity. In learning foreign language, they can receive information easily in target language but they should be careful of incorrect information
  • 15. Left and Right Brain Functioning • Right hemisphere specialized for synthesis. The learners have quite limited ability in language, dominant in space orientation, artistic interest, craft, image, remembering face. • They tend to more holistic and relational, and work in simultaneously mode. • Left hemisphere specialized in analytic and logical thinking and good in verbal and mathematical function. • They tend to work sequentially and operate linearly. Every informations processed logically based on the order.

Pedagogical Implication • Language learning style is one of the most influencing factors in language learning. • learning style awareness can influence pedagogy such as the ways teachers choose to teach, understand learner’s needs, differentiate materials. • It is also beneficial for the leaners because they can choose most appropriate learning style that match to the learning that is being undertaken.
  • 18. Conclusion Learning styles are individuals’ preference to acquire and learn thing in the most comfortable ways. Generally, there arethree major types such as: cognitive, sensory, and personality. Teacher can use various strategies and then modify teaching task to accommodate various student’s learning style.
