energy efficiency, finance, investment, consultancy and other sectors that are affected by the
energy sector.
It will provide an opportunity for business leaders, decision-makers and other industry
professionals to discuss the trending topics of the industry as well as taking action to deliver a
sustainable future through panel discussions and sessions.
Dr. Matar Al Neyadi, Under-Secretary at the UAE Ministry of Energy and Industry and Chairman of
the UAE Organising Committee, said, "The World Energy Congress has gone from strength to
strength with every edition. The large attendance, the diversity of exhibitors and the
comprehensive conference program for the 24th edition in Abu Dhabi signifies the importance of
the Congress.
"Boasting a rich history, the World Energy
Congress has attracted a wide array of
experts, business leaders and government
officials from around the world and Abu
Dhabi will be no different.
The UAE has outlined ambitious plans in
transforming the energy sector including two
of the largest solar generation projects in the
world and we are proud that Abu Dhabi is the
first city in the Middle East to stage this
prestigious event, which is another feather to
our cap."
The tri-annual event is now considered the
‘Davos of energy issues’, with every
Congress enabling hundreds of global
experts to convene, share and discuss the latest trends from around the world; it has also
attracted distinguished speakers over the years.
Prominent physicist and former Nobel Prize recipient, the late Albert Einstein, is among those to
have shared his extensive knowledge as part of a lecture session during the Berlin Congress in
1930.
Confirmed to take the stage in Abu Dhabi are Suhail bin Mohammed Faraj Faris Al Mazrouei,
Minister of Energy and Industry, Dr. Sultan bin Ahmad Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of State and
ADNOC Group CEO, and Awaidha Al Marar, Abu Dhabi Department of Energy Chairman.
During the four days, the Congress will also feature more than 30 side events including workshops
and roundtables that will be hosted by various organisations. One of the notable side events to
take place is the Start Up Energy Transition – 100 (SET100), which will feature the top 100
international start-ups showcasing the most innovative products and services that will address
climate change and improve energy efficiency.
Among other side events taking place is the World Economic Forum – Global Energy Transition
and a workshop hosted by the UAE Ministry of Energy and Industry and the German Federal
Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy on how other nations can learn from German practices.
Also taking place are two key World Energy Council events. The World Energy Leaders’ Summit
will see the attendance of global energy leaders while young professionals will be able to voice
their opinions as part of the Future Energy Leaders’ Summit.

Saudi Aramco considering Tokyo for IPO listing: report
Trade Arabia + NewBase + The national
Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil firm, is considering Tokyo as the international destination to
list its shares, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The state oil giant is considering an IPO in two stages: A flotation on the Saudi stock exchange
later this year, and an international listing in 2020 or 2021, the Journal said, citing people familiar
with the plans.
“The company is leaning toward Tokyo as the venue for the second phase of its proposed plan” as
political uncertainty in Britain and China reduced the appeal of London and Hong Kong markets,
the report said.
The IPO, when it goes ahead, is expected to be the world’s largest. The corporate value of
Aramco is believed to be $2 trillion.
Saudi Arabia is expected to redouble focus on preparations to list its state oil company and
provide a clearer growth strategy for its mining sector following the split of its energy and mineral
resources ministry into two separate entities.
Saudi Arabia's King Salman issued a number of royal decrees on Friday, which included rolling
out the new ministry, establishing new authorities to develop the capital Riyadh, opening a centre
for artificial intelligence and replacing the head of the Royal Court as well as other authorities.
Saudi energy minister Khaled Al Falih, who held the full portfolio of the ministry of energy, industry
and mineral resources, will continue as energy minister, while businessman Bandar Alkhorayef
will head the newly-decreed mineral resources ministry.
His appointment comes at a time when the Saudi state is looking to maximise productivity from its
natural resources and mining sectors, as it drives job creation as part of its Vision 2030 strategy.

The split of mandate for the energy, industry and mineral resources ministry was much needed,
said Mazen Al Sudairi, head of research at Al Rajhi Capital.
"The ministry of energy, industry and mineral resources is a ministry with two different strategies.
They have to manage the Saudi oil sector, Saudi demand in the future and also prioritise
renewable energy as part of their agenda," said Mr Al Sudairi.
"On the other hand, the industry ministry has the challenge of creating jobs and fostering research
and development and creating an innovative environment," he added.
The move is seen as a streamlining of efforts as the kingdom prepares to list 5 per cent of Saudi
Aramco at the end of 2019 or early next year, according to recent reports. The Wall Street

Journal reported last week that Saudi Arabia could likely split the initial public offering into two
stages, with the first tranche likely to take place this year on the domestic Tadawul exchange. A
foreign listing could take place as early as next year or 2021, with Tokyo emerging as a favourite,
to avoid possible political and legal complications from a listing in New York, London or Hong
Kong.
Saudi Aramco on Friday said that the company continued to engage with the shareholders on
"IPO readiness activities".
"The company is ready and timing will depend on market conditions and be at a time of the
shareholder’s choosing," the statement, in response to market, rumours read.
Meanwhile, the energy, industry and mineral resources ministry will run the joint portfolio until the
end of the current fiscal year, with Mr Alkhorayef expected to assume responsibility at the
beginning of next year. Mr Alkhorayef is a member of the board of the Alkhorayef Group, which
invests in Saudi Arabia's agriculture sector. A graduate of the King Saud University, he has held
various positions within the 62-year-old Saudi conglomerate, which also has interests in power
and utility, farming tools and lubricants.
Saudi Arabia outlined a strategy in January to spend 100 billion riyals (Dh97.93bn) in 2019 and
2020 as part of a new industrial strategy, aimed at diversifying away from hydrocarbons, creating
1.6 million jobs and attracting 1.6 trillion riyals in investment by 2030. The strategy known as the
National Industrial Development and Logistics Programme will have a range of 42 initiatives
spanning mining, logistics as well as energy.
"This diversification of industries is seen as a positive move for the reformation of the kingdom's
economy and could result in further improvement in the smooth and transparent running of the
ministries," said Vijay Valecha, chief Investment Officer at Dubai-based Century Financial. The
separation is seen as diversification of power and resources within the ministries, he added.

Malaysia: Fugro’s targeted approach secures second seep
hunting success offshore Malaysia….. Source: Fugro
Fugro has successfully completed the second of three Malaysian seep hunting and geochemical
campaigns for PETRONAS, Malaysia’s fully integrated oil and gas company.
The second campaign was located offshore Sarawak, Malaysia and began 8 May 2019 onboard
the Fugro Equator. Acquired geophysical data included over 15 000 km2 of multibeam
echosounder (MBES) data providing bathym etry, backscatter intensity, and water column
information.
More than 40 discreet water column anomalies, potential locations of active hydrocarbon
seepage, were identified. Using the MBES data in combination with over 3600 line-km of sub-
bottom profiler data, Fugro and PETRONAS’ geoscientists identified 350 locations for coring and
geochemical analysis.
The Fugro Equinox mobilised on 29 May 2019 to target these locations: over the course of two
months, 275 piston cores were acquired and more than 1600 near-real-time geochemical
analyses – including headspace gas, total scanning fluorescence and extracted hydrocarbon gas
chromatography (C15+) – were conducted. This targeted approach identifies precise seep
locations quickly and accurately, which avoids unnecessary sampling locations and streamlines
acquisition for clients such as PETRONAS.
Following the Sarawak campaign, En Amiruddin Mansor, Head, Basin Strategy and Management,
Resource Exploration, Malaysia Petroleum Management PETRONAS, stated: 'The results from
deepwater Sarawak campaign have been exciting to receive in near-real time, and it was
executed successfully, within the set timeline, with excellent health, safety and environment (HSE)
compliance.
The onboard geochemical analyses were very helpful in providing early results to accelerate our
project timeline. The results from these campaigns have all been positive and will enhance our
open block’s attractiveness for future block promotion and exploration activities.'

The third seep hunting and geochemical campaign for PETRONAS will begin in Q3 2019 and will
take place offshore Peninsular Malaysia in the Straits of Malacca. The first campaign was
conducted offshore Sabah, Malaysia, and took place between December 2018 and March 2019.
Following the Sarawak campaign, En Amiruddin Mansor, Head, Basin Strategy and Management,
Resource Exploration, Malaysia Petroleum Management Petronas, stated: “The results from
deepwater Sarawak campaign have been exciting to receive in near-real time, and it was

Oil Caps Its Worst Month Since May as Trade-War Concerns Linger
Bloomberg + NewBase
extended its biggest monthly decline since May as concern over U.S.-China trade tensions
outweighed signs that OPEC’s supply cuts are trimming stockpiles.Futures fell 2.8% in New York,
extending the month’s slide to almost 6%.
Concerns about demand for swelling U.S. production have been stoked as China gets set to start
taxing U.S. oil from Sunday. American oil explorers, even as they cut drilling to a 19-month low,
are producing record volumes of crude.
“It’s simply positioning ahead of the long weekend,” said Bob Yawger, futures director at Mizuho
Securities USA in New York.

under pressure as the outlook for the global economy continues to be weak and the U.S. pumps
out crude at record-high levels.
Further, Russian earlier said it was cutting production but not as much as it had agreed to with
OPEC and its allies. At the same time, there are signs that inventories are being drawn down. U.S.
stockpiles fell in the week ended Aug. 23 to the lowest level since November, government data
show.
The impending Beijing 5% tariff on U.S. oil is particularly responsible for the recent weakness in
WTI relative to Brent. The American benchmark is now fetching a $5.49 a barrel discount to its
global counterpart, the widest in nearly a month.“The wider spread is a sign of the trade war,” said
Rob Haworth, who helps oversee $151 billion at U.S. Bank Wealth Management in Seattle.
Chinese buyers would have to find alternatives since U.S. oil has become more expensive, he
said.
“That will push up Brent prices, while weakening U.S. oil.”West Texas Intermediate for October
delivery sank $1.61 to settle at $55.10 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.Brent for
October settlement, which expires Friday, fell 65 cents to $60.43 a barrel on the ICE Futures
Europe Exchange.
The more-active November contract sank $1.24 to $59.25.Traders are also keeping an eye on
Hurricane Dorian that’s now expected to become a Category 4 storm and make landfall on
Florida’s east coast, the first major hurricane to hit the area in 15 years. Threats of the storm has
already forced Chevron to remove some non-essential staff from two of its platforms in the Gulf of
Mexico.
U.S. oil drillers cut rigs for ninth month to least since Jan 2018: Baker Hughes
U.S. energy firms this week reduced the number of oil rigs operating, with the rig count declining
for the ninth straight month to its lowest since January last year as most producers cut spending
on new drilling this year.

Drillers cut 12 oil rigs in the week to Aug. 30, bringing the total count down to 742, the lowest
since early January 2018, General Electric Co’s Baker Hughes energy services firm said in its
closely followed report on Friday.
For the month, the oil rig count, an early indicator of future output, dropped by 34, its biggest
decline since March 2019. That put the count down for the ninth month in a row. In the same
week a year ago, there were 862 active rigs.
U.S. crude output fell by 33,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 12.08 million bpd in June, the second
month of consecutive declines, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said in a monthly
report released on Friday.
On a weekly basis, however, U.S. output last week rose to a new record high of 12.5 million bpd,
the EIA said.
U.S. crude futures traded around $55 per barrel on Friday, ahead of a hurricane near the Florida
coast that could dampen demand, but were set for a big weekly gain as the U.S.-China trade
conflict eased.
Looking ahead, U.S. crude futures were trading around $55 a barrel for the balance of 2019 and
about $52 in calendar 2020.
U.S. financial services firm Cowen & Co said projections from the exploration and production
(E&P) companies it tracks point to a 5% decline in capital expenditures for drilling and completions
in 2019 versus 2018.
Cowen said independent producers expect to spend about 11% less in 2019, while major oil
companies plan to spend about 16% more. In total, Cowen said all of the E&P companies it
tracks that have reported plan to spend about $80.5 billion in 2019 versus $84.6 billion in 2018.
Year-to-date, the total number of oil and gas rigs active in the United States has averaged 996.
Most rigs produce both oil and gas. The number of U.S. gas rigs, meanwhile, remained
unchanged from last week at 162.

CONSUMPTION & PRODUCTION
The United States uses and produces many different types and sources of energy, which can be
grouped into general categories such as primary and secondary, renewable and nonrenewable,
and fossil fuels.
Primary energy sources include fossil fuels (petroleum, natural gas, and coal), nuclear energy,
and renewable sources of energy. Electricity is a secondary energy source that is generated
(produced) from primary energy sources.
Energy sources are measured in different physical units: liquid fuels in barrels or gallons, natural
gas in cubic feet, coal in short tons, and electricity in kilowatts and kilowatthours. In the United
States, British thermal units (Btu), a measure of heat energy, is commonly used for comparing
different types of energy to each other. In 2018, total U.S. primary energy consumption was equal
to about 101,251,057,000,000,000 British thermal units (Btu), or about 101.3 quadrillion Btu.

There are five energy-use sectors, and the amounts—in quadrillion Btu (or quads)—of their
primary energy consumption in 2018 were
In 2018, the electric power sector accounted for about 96% of total U.S. electricity generation,
nearly all of which was sold to the other sectors. The transportation, industrial, commercial, and
residential sectors are called end-use sectors because they consume primary energy and
electricity produced by the electric power sector.
The amount of primary energy use plus the energy content of electricity purchased from the
electric power sector by each end-use sector in 2018
The sources of energy used by each sector varies widely. For example, petroleum provides about
92% of the transportation sector's energy consumption, but less than 1% of the electric power
sector's primary energy use.

The chart below shows the types and amounts of primary energy sources consumed in the United
States, the amounts of primary energy used by the electric power sector and the energy end-use
sectors, and the sales of retail electricity by the electric power sector to the energy end-use
sectors.
The chart below shows historical primary energy consumption from 1950 through 2018.
Total energy consumption by the end-use sectors includes their primary energy use, purchased
electricity, and electrical system energy losses (energy conversion and other losses associated
with the generation, transmission, and distribution of purchased electricity) and other energy
losses.
Domestic energy production equaled about 95% of U.S. energy consumption in 2018
In 2018, the amount of energy produced in the United States was equal to about 95.7 quads,
which was equal to about 95% of total U.S. energy consumption, the largest share since 1967.
Net imports of crude oil accounted for the majority of the difference between total primary energy
production and total primary energy consumption in 2018.
Fossil fuels—petroleum, natural gas, and coal—accounted for about 79% of total U.S. primary
energy production in 2018.
The amounts, in quads, and percent shares of total U.S. energy production by major sources in
2018 were

The mix of U.S. energy consumption and production has changed over time
Fossil fuels have dominated the U.S. energy mix for more than 100 years, but the mix has
changed over time.
Coal production has trended down since its peak of 24.0 quads in 1998. A major reason for the
general decline in U.S. coal production in recent years is the decrease in U.S. coal consumption
for electricity generation.
Natural gas production reached a record high of 31.5 quads in 2018. In 2017 and 2018, U.S. dry
natural gas production was greater than U.S. natural gas consumption for the first time since
1966.
More efficient drilling and production techniques have resulted in increased production of natural
gas from shale and tight geologic formations. The increase in production contributed to a decline
in natural gas prices, which in turn has contributed to increases in natural gas use by the electric
power and industrial sectors.

Crude oil production generally decreased each year between 1970 and 2008. In 2009, the trend
reversed and production began to rise, and in 2018, U.S. crude oil production was 22.8 quads, the
highest on record. More cost-effective drilling and production technologies helped to boost
production, especially in Texas and North Dakota.
Natural gas plant liquids (NGPL) are hydrocarbon gas liquids (HGL) that are extracted from
natural gas before the natural gas is put into pipelines for transmission to consumers. NGPL
production has increased alongside increases in natural gas production and reached a record high
of 5.8 quads in 2018. U.S. HGL consumption and exports to other countries have both increased
in recent years.
Nuclear energy production in commercial nuclear power plants in the United States began in 1957
and grew each year through 1990 and generally leveled off after 2000. In 2018, even though there
were fewer operating nuclear reactors than in 2000, nuclear power plants produced the second-
highest amount of energy on record at 8.4 quads, mainly because of a combination of increased
capacity from power plant upgrades and shorter refueling and maintenance cycles.
Renewable energy production and consumption both reached record highs of about 11.7 and 11.5
quads, respectively, in 2018. Although hydroelectric power production in 2018 was about 6%
lower than the 50-year average, biomass, wind, solar, and geothermal energy production were
higher than in any previous year.

"Boasting a rich history, the World Energy Congress has attracted a wide array of experts, business leaders and government officials from around the world and Abu Dhabi will be no different. The UAE has outlined ambitious plans in transforming the energy sector including two of the largest solar generation projects in the world and we are proud that Abu Dhabi is the first city in the Middle East to stage this prestigious event, which is another feather to our cap." The tri-annual event is now considered the ‘Davos of energy issues’, with every Congress enabling hundreds of global experts to convene, share and discuss the latest trends from around the world; it has also attracted distinguished speakers over the years. Prominent physicist and former Nobel Prize recipient, the late Albert Einstein, is among those to have shared his extensive knowledge as part of a lecture session during the Berlin Congress in 1930. Confirmed to take the stage in Abu Dhabi are Suhail bin Mohammed Faraj Faris Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Industry, Dr. Sultan bin Ahmad Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of State and ADNOC Group CEO, and Awaidha Al Marar, Abu Dhabi Department of Energy Chairman. During the four days, the Congress will also feature more than 30 side events including workshops and roundtables that will be hosted by various organisations. One of the notable side events to take place is the Start Up Energy Transition – 100 (SET100), which will feature the top 100 international start-ups showcasing the most innovative products and services that will address climate change and improve energy efficiency. Among other side events taking place is the World Economic Forum – Global Energy Transition and a workshop hosted by the UAE Ministry of Energy and Industry and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy on how other nations can learn from German practices. Also taking place are two key World Energy Council events. The World Energy Leaders’ Summit will see the attendance of global energy leaders while young professionals will be able to voice their opinions as part of the Future Energy Leaders’ Summit.

Page 3 Saudi Aramco considering Tokyo for IPO listing: report Trade Arabia + NewBase + The national Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil firm, is considering Tokyo as the international destination to list its shares, The Wall Street Journal reported. The state oil giant is considering an IPO in two stages: A flotation on the Saudi stock exchange later this year, and an international listing in 2020 or 2021, the Journal said, citing people familiar with the plans. “The company is leaning toward Tokyo as the venue for the second phase of its proposed plan” as political uncertainty in Britain and China reduced the appeal of London and Hong Kong markets, the report said. The IPO, when it goes ahead, is expected to be the world’s largest. The corporate value of Aramco is believed to be $2 trillion. Saudi Arabia is expected to redouble focus on preparations to list its state oil company and provide a clearer growth strategy for its mining sector following the split of its energy and mineral resources ministry into two separate entities. Saudi Arabia's King Salman issued a number of royal decrees on Friday, which included rolling out the new ministry, establishing new authorities to develop the capital Riyadh, opening a centre for artificial intelligence and replacing the head of the Royal Court as well as other authorities. Saudi energy minister Khaled Al Falih, who held the full portfolio of the ministry of energy, industry and mineral resources, will continue as energy minister, while businessman Bandar Alkhorayef will head the newly-decreed mineral resources ministry. His appointment comes at a time when the Saudi state is looking to maximise productivity from its natural resources and mining sectors, as it drives job creation as part of its Vision 2030 strategy.

Page 4 The split of mandate for the energy, industry and mineral resources ministry was much needed, said Mazen Al Sudairi, head of research at Al Rajhi Capital. "The ministry of energy, industry and mineral resources is a ministry with two different strategies. They have to manage the Saudi oil sector, Saudi demand in the future and also prioritise renewable energy as part of their agenda," said Mr Al Sudairi. "On the other hand, the industry ministry has the challenge of creating jobs and fostering research and development and creating an innovative environment," he added. The move is seen as a streamlining of efforts as the kingdom prepares to list 5 per cent of Saudi Aramco at the end of 2019 or early next year, according to recent reports. The Wall Street

Page 5 Journal reported last week that Saudi Arabia could likely split the initial public offering into two stages, with the first tranche likely to take place this year on the domestic Tadawul exchange. A foreign listing could take place as early as next year or 2021, with Tokyo emerging as a favourite, to avoid possible political and legal complications from a listing in New York, London or Hong Kong. Saudi Aramco on Friday said that the company continued to engage with the shareholders on "IPO readiness activities". "The company is ready and timing will depend on market conditions and be at a time of the shareholder’s choosing," the statement, in response to market, rumours read. Meanwhile, the energy, industry and mineral resources ministry will run the joint portfolio until the end of the current fiscal year, with Mr Alkhorayef expected to assume responsibility at the beginning of next year. Mr Alkhorayef is a member of the board of the Alkhorayef Group, which invests in Saudi Arabia's agriculture sector. A graduate of the King Saud University, he has held various positions within the 62-year-old Saudi conglomerate, which also has interests in power and utility, farming tools and lubricants. Saudi Arabia outlined a strategy in January to spend 100 billion riyals (Dh97.93bn) in 2019 and 2020 as part of a new industrial strategy, aimed at diversifying away from hydrocarbons, creating 1.6 million jobs and attracting 1.6 trillion riyals in investment by 2030. The strategy known as the National Industrial Development and Logistics Programme will have a range of 42 initiatives spanning mining, logistics as well as energy. "This diversification of industries is seen as a positive move for the reformation of the kingdom's economy and could result in further improvement in the smooth and transparent running of the ministries," said Vijay Valecha, chief Investment Officer at Dubai-based Century Financial. The separation is seen as diversification of power and resources within the ministries, he added.

Page 6 Malaysia: Fugro’s targeted approach secures second seep hunting success offshore Malaysia….. Source: Fugro Fugro has successfully completed the second of three Malaysian seep hunting and geochemical campaigns for PETRONAS, Malaysia’s fully integrated oil and gas company. The second campaign was located offshore Sarawak, Malaysia and began 8 May 2019 onboard the Fugro Equator. Acquired geophysical data included over 15 000 km2 of multibeam echosounder (MBES) data providing bathym etry, backscatter intensity, and water column information. More than 40 discreet water column anomalies, potential locations of active hydrocarbon seepage, were identified. Using the MBES data in combination with over 3600 line-km of sub- bottom profiler data, Fugro and PETRONAS’ geoscientists identified 350 locations for coring and geochemical analysis. The Fugro Equinox mobilised on 29 May 2019 to target these locations: over the course of two months, 275 piston cores were acquired and more than 1600 near-real-time geochemical analyses – including headspace gas, total scanning fluorescence and extracted hydrocarbon gas chromatography (C15+) – were conducted. This targeted approach identifies precise seep locations quickly and accurately, which avoids unnecessary sampling locations and streamlines acquisition for clients such as PETRONAS. Following the Sarawak campaign, En Amiruddin Mansor, Head, Basin Strategy and Management, Resource Exploration, Malaysia Petroleum Management PETRONAS, stated: 'The results from deepwater Sarawak campaign have been exciting to receive in near-real time, and it was executed successfully, within the set timeline, with excellent health, safety and environment (HSE) compliance. The onboard geochemical analyses were very helpful in providing early results to accelerate our project timeline. The results from these campaigns have all been positive and will enhance our open block’s attractiveness for future block promotion and exploration activities.'

U.S. stockpiles fell in the week ended Aug. 23 to the lowest level since November, government data show. The impending Beijing 5% tariff on U.S. oil is particularly responsible for the recent weakness in WTI relative to Brent. The American benchmark is now fetching a $5.49 a barrel discount to its global counterpart, the widest in nearly a month.“The wider spread is a sign of the trade war,” said Rob Haworth, who helps oversee $151 billion at U.S. Bank Wealth Management in Seattle. Chinese buyers would have to find alternatives since U.S. oil has become more expensive, he said. “That will push up Brent prices, while weakening U.S. oil.”West Texas Intermediate for October delivery sank $1.61 to settle at $55.10 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.Brent for October settlement, which expires Friday, fell 65 cents to $60.43 a barrel on the ICE Futures Europe Exchange. Threats of the storm has already forced Chevron to remove some non-essential staff from two of its platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. U.S. oil drillers cut rigs for ninth month to least since Jan 2018: Baker Hughes U.S. energy firms this week reduced the number of oil rigs operating, with the rig count declining for the ninth straight month to its lowest since January last year as most producers cut spending on new drilling this year.

Page 10 Drillers cut 12 oil rigs in the week to Aug. 30, bringing the total count down to 742, the lowest since early January 2018, General Electric Co’s Baker Hughes energy services firm said in its closely followed report on Friday. For the month, the oil rig count, an early indicator of future output, dropped by 34, its biggest decline since March 2019. That put the count down for the ninth month in a row. In the same week a year ago, there were 862 active rigs. U.S. crude output fell by 33,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 12.08 million bpd in June, the second month of consecutive declines, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said in a monthly report released on Friday. On a weekly basis, however, U.S. output last week rose to a new record high of 12.5 million bpd, the EIA said. U.S. crude futures traded around $55 per barrel on Friday, ahead of a hurricane near the Florida coast that could dampen demand, but were set for a big weekly gain as the U.S.-China trade conflict eased. Looking ahead, U.S. crude futures were trading around $55 a barrel for the balance of 2019 and about $52 in calendar 2020. U.S. financial services firm Cowen & Co said projections from the exploration and production (E&P) companies it tracks point to a 5% decline in capital expenditures for drilling and completions in 2019 versus 2018. Cowen said independent producers expect to spend about 11% less in 2019, while major oil companies plan to spend about 16% more. In total, Cowen said all of the E&P companies it tracks that have reported plan to spend about $80.5 billion in 2019 versus $84.6 billion in 2018. Year-to-date, the total number of oil and gas rigs active in the United States has averaged 996. Most rigs produce both oil and gas. The number of U.S. gas rigs, meanwhile, remained unchanged from last week at 162.

Page 11 NewBase Special Coverage News Agencies News Release 03 August 2019 U.S. energy facts explained,as EIA introduces redesigned Energy Explained resource … Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration CONSUMPTION & PRODUCTION The United States uses and produces many different types and sources of energy, which can be grouped into general categories such as primary and secondary, renewable and nonrenewable, and fossil fuels. Primary energy sources include fossil fuels (petroleum, natural gas, and coal), nuclear energy, and renewable sources of energy. Electricity is a secondary energy source that is generated (produced) from primary energy sources. Energy sources are measured in different physical units: liquid fuels in barrels or gallons, natural gas in cubic feet, coal in short tons, and electricity in kilowatts and kilowatthours. In the United States, British thermal units (Btu), a measure of heat energy, is commonly used for comparing different types of energy to each other. In 2018, total U.S. primary energy consumption was equal to about 101,251,057,000,000,000 British thermal units (Btu), or about 101.3 quadrillion Btu.

The transportation, industrial, commercial, and residential sectors are called end-use sectors because they consume primary energy and electricity produced by the electric power sector. The amount of primary energy use plus the energy content of electricity purchased from the electric power sector by each end-use sector in 2018 The sources of energy used by each sector varies widely. For example, petroleum provides about 92% of the transportation sector's energy consumption, but less than 1% of the electric power sector's primary energy use.

Total energy consumption by the end-use sectors includes their primary energy use, purchased electricity, and electrical system energy losses (energy conversion and other losses associated with the generation, transmission, and distribution of purchased electricity) and other energy losses. Domestic energy production equaled about 95% of U.S. energy consumption in 2018 In 2018, the amount of energy produced in the United States was equal to about 95.7 quads, which was equal to about 95% of total U.S. energy consumption, the largest share since 1967. Net imports of crude oil accounted for the majority of the difference between total primary energy production and total primary energy consumption in 2018. Fossil fuels—petroleum, natural gas, and coal—accounted for about 79% of total U.S. primary energy production in 2018. The amounts, in quads, and percent shares of total U.S. energy production by major sources in 2018 were

Page 14 The mix of U.S. energy consumption and production has changed over time Fossil fuels have dominated the U.S. energy mix for more than 100 years, but the mix has changed over time. Coal production has trended down since its peak of 24.0 quads in 1998. A major reason for the general decline in U.S. coal production in recent years is the decrease in U.S. coal consumption for electricity generation. Natural gas production reached a record high of 31.5 quads in 2018. In 2017 and 2018, U.S. dry natural gas production was greater than U.S. natural gas consumption for the first time since 1966. More efficient drilling and production techniques have resulted in increased production of natural gas from shale and tight geologic formations. The increase in production contributed to a decline in natural gas prices, which in turn has contributed to increases in natural gas use by the electric power and industrial sectors.

Page 15 Crude oil production generally decreased each year between 1970 and 2008. In 2009, the trend reversed and production began to rise, and in 2018, U.S. crude oil production was 22.8 quads, the highest on record. More cost-effective drilling and production technologies helped to boost production, especially in Texas and North Dakota. Natural gas plant liquids (NGPL) are hydrocarbon gas liquids (HGL) that are extracted from natural gas before the natural gas is put into pipelines for transmission to consumers. NGPL production has increased alongside increases in natural gas production and reached a record high of 5.8 quads in 2018. U.S. HGL consumption and exports to other countries have both increased in recent years. Nuclear energy production in commercial nuclear power plants in the United States began in 1957 and grew each year through 1990 and generally leveled off after 2000. In 2018, even though there were fewer operating nuclear reactors than in 2000, nuclear power plants produced the second- highest amount of energy on record at 8.4 quads, mainly because of a combination of increased capacity from power plant upgrades and shorter refueling and maintenance cycles. Renewable energy production and consumption both reached record highs of about 11.7 and 11.5 quads, respectively, in 2018. Although hydroelectric power production in 2018 was about 6% lower than the 50-year average, biomass, wind, solar, and geothermal energy production were higher than in any previous year.
