Persecution Of A Pie
How to Split a "Pie" A pie, a knife and the people behind it. The pie represents Africa and the knife
used by Europeans is what split it up. Africa was split up and divided among all of the European
countries, they did whatever they could to dice it up too. The Europeans suppressed and enslaved
the Africans, they also forced their disease and culture onto them. People could not speak up for
their freedom they could only wait and survive. This was the idea of some of the African people.
Not many spoke out because they would either be beaten or killed and this frightened them.
Hundreds of working blacks and loud shouting whites, these are a few of many things that you could
have witnessed if you were there. The blacks were forced and abused

A Short Story : A Black Dream Story
A sudden noise woke Clemmie. A black dream swirled in her head, but no matter how much she
tried to grasp it, she could not hold on to the nightmare which tainted her dreams.
Then, from out of nowhere, her tummy grumbled and growled, but since she had amnesia, she could
not even remember the last time she ate. A small chunk of bread, or even an apple would be enough
to stave off her hunger pangs for now. Where could she find food at this time of night?
One eye, then the other, poked above the covers on her bed.
Where was she? Every time she woke, it was in a different room; first it was the white room, then
the study, and now she was someplace new. She couldn't help but marvel at how she seemed to
move around by magic. Yet, isn't that what dead people do, move from room to room, as they haunt
houses?
And then she saw a faint slither of light under the door. Well, since she couldn't go back to sleep, she
kicked off the covers and crept across the floor. The hinges didn't squeak, and soon she was on the
landing. First, she looked to the left, and then to the right, poised to retreat back inside the room if
someone came along. Merging with the shadows as much as she could, she made her first tentative
steps towards the stairs. Then, down and down she went.
A clock in the entrance hall struck one o'clock but she didn't want to linger.
When she reached the lower levels, her bare feet skipped across the cold stone floor, until at last, she
found the kitchen. And what an amazing

Descriptive Essay About Michaelmas
Michaelmas
Every year, on the colorful fall day of September 29th, Sacramento Waldorf School hosts a festival
where good triumphs and evil parishes. Young girls and boys eagerly dress up as knights, to help
Saint George and Saint Michael conquer and tame the malicious dragon, through good actions and
deeds. Along with fun activities, caramel apples, and motivating spirit, Michaelmas is a special way
to prepare students for the challenging academic year ahead.
Michaelmas is a whole school event, where grades first through twelve are assigned a different role,
to put on a show that has its own unique twist each time. The roles include villagers (played by first
through fourth grade), Knights (played by the fifth grade) the dragon (Played by the sixth grade),
Lords and nobles (played by seventh through eleventh grade) and lastly, Saint George and Saint
Michael (played by twelfth graders). The story told is a classic good vs. evil, preformed inside a
giant circle, created by everyone attending the festival. A town of poor villages are fearful of a
dragon, who is merciless and cruel. One day, the dragon attacks the village, leaving the villagers
desperate and frightened. All the noble knights flee in fear, except for one, Saint George. Saint
George bravely faces the dragon, but instead of using his sword, he kneels and prays to saint
Michael to give him wisdom and strength. Michael appears out of the heavens, and empowers Saint
George, with courage, and kindness. Saint George

How Different Are Our Thanksgivings
How different are our Thanksgivings really? How many people do you know that do things
differently than you for Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving is a time where you get your whole family
together and spend time with each other. During your time together, you reminisce about hilariously
weird memories and laugh at all of the amazingly fun times you guys have had together. Also, you
feast and make more memories that you will have with you forever! When your with whoever's
house you go to, you get to be you and not worry about what anyone thinks because you know your
family loves you the way you are.
Writing this essay could make you have an open mind about others and how different we celebrate
our holiday. Most of my peers and I eat the same thing. Some things are Turkey, Mashed Potatoes,
and Mac n Cheese. More things we all eat in common is Ham, Stuffing, and Green Bean Casserole,
and ect. Also, we all have pies and something to do with vegetables. Not everyone has the same type
of thing but have something to do with one thing. Although, the main courses of our food is the
same with most people. Everyone has at most three things the same whether it's a type of pie or
actual food, they are the same. About six, maybe more, are different than what we eat. One thing is
dumplings, not everyone eats dumplings. Green Beans, cheese and cracker platter, chips and dip,
and French Silk Pie are all more examples of what we eat differently than others. For Thanksgiving,
some have seven pies or they have one pie, or we have pecan pie and someone else has apple pie.
We all have different qualities of certain food depending on who like it. Making some new food this
year would be a great idea, because you don't know if you like it or not, and you won't know unless
you try it. The activities we do inside are different, some play video games or watch football or
basketball. My family along with many others play board games and reminisce over our most prized
and favorite memories. Also our behavior around each other is kind and caring because we care
about one another. Some families fight or try and talk over each other because we wanna talk or we
just don't get along in general. My favorite thing to do during Thanksgiving or any

Will It Pie Short Story
Will It Pie! It was a scorching, hot day in the Outer Banks on June 6, 2017 at about 4:00 PM. You
could hear the rough waves crashing on the soft sand. You could feel the sun rays beating on your
back. There was a very peaceful wind. Just enough of a wind to cool you down. It was exactly 104
degrees outside. Rhett McLaughlin, Link Neal, Liza Koshy, David Dobrik and I were renting an
oceanfront house in Nags Head, North Carolina. We were sitting on the deck facing the beautiful
ocean. We had been on the beach all day, and we wanted to do something fun. So, as we were trying
to figure out what to do, we started talking about YouTube. Rhett and Link have a channel called

"How about we do Will It Pie? That way, we won't have to make five of each sample. We will have
about three or four of the taste tests, and we will only have to make three or four pies. Not fifteen or
twenty muffins or something."
"That sounds like a great idea", said Rhett.
"I say we get some ants, mixed chinese food, octopus and a pig heart," said Rhett.
"Umm.................okay, if that's what you guys want to do," said David.
"These are probably the weirdest things I have ever purchased in a Food Lion before," said Liza.
"Why is the cashier looking at us like that?" asked Link.
"Well, maybe because we are buying a pig heart, ants and an octopus, with a side of chinese food,"
said Ali. "Now that we have everything let's head back to the house."
"Okay," everyone agreed.
"Since we have this huge kitchen in our house, we can make our pies with lots of room," said Link.
"Let's put the chinese food in a pie crust. Then, when we eat it, we can put some soy sauce on the
top. For the octopus, we can put the legs in the pie, then eat it plain. For the pig heart, we can just
put it in the middle, and maybe cut it in half. Last, for the ants, let's put some meringue in the middle

American Pie, by Don McLean Essay
Analysis of the song "American Pie", by Don McLean
The song "American Pie", by Don McLean, was a major rock–and–roll hit in 1971. McLean
portrays famous rock–and–roll singer and songwriter Buddy Holly, who died in a plane crash in
1961 by using many rhetorical strategies. The different possible interpretations of this song made it
one of the most controversial songs from the 1970's.
Don McLean was a famous singer/songwriter who was popular in the 1970's. His music is mostly
classified into rock–and–roll. The audience of this song can be anyone. The majority of the people
listening to the song in the 1970's were hippies, or people who had open minds. The purpose of this
song is not just to entertain people with beautiful music, but ... Show more content on

The address to the term, "Miss American Pie" references a plane that went down killing singer
Buddy Holly. The line, "The quartet practiced in the park," refers to the famous pop group Beatles
who became famous shortly after the death of Holly. All of the other symbolism in this song
revolves events that happened around that time of Holly's death. McLean uses informal irony in the
tone of the song to convey this deep symbolism. Because of the depth, there is a big controversy on
what some of the words represent. Some people even think "Miss American Pie" represents the civil
rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.. One example of McLean's use of irony is in the story about
Holly. The irony comes from how he describes when Holly was younger, "he borrowed a coat from
James Dean," and then many years later he was a famous singer. McLean uses a subjective point of
view as he uses his interpretations, comments, and judgments to appeal to pathos in this song.
McLean uses only two of the rhetorical appeals. Ethos is used when he describes the other singers
most people know about. "And while Lenin read a book on Marx," emphasizes ethos because Lenin
was a famous singer who people respect. Pathos was used throughout the whole piece especially
when he said "the lovers cried and the poets screamed." This quote describes the people's sadness
towards the death of Holly, which appeals to the listener in many emotional ways. He also uses

The Van Was No Longer A Toy
Soon as we got home, they were trying to get the toy. I told them to go in the house, while I get the
toy. Fast forward, later that even, it was time for the children to do their homework. My oldest son,
Alento asked for the keys, to get his pencil, that he dropped in the trunk. I told him to borrow a
pencil from somebody, to do his homework. All while I wasn't using the trunk, nobody ever said
anything about it! For some reason, it seemed like, every since Brianna's toy was tossed in the trunk,
everybody had a reason to go back there. All of a sudden, they wanted to keep their backpacks in the
trunk, like their friends did. I had to explain to them, that their friends had to keep their bags in the
trunk because their families had cars. They didn't have room in a car, like we had in the van. That's
when I knew that the van was no longer a good hiding place. That's when I decided to get my snacks
in, another way. I started sneaking to fast food restaurants. I'd often go to a restaurant to order ice
cream and chocolate chip cookies, or ice cream and apple pie. I'd sometimes order two pies.
Sneaking to the restaurant was like going on a vacation. I was able to peacefully eat my desserts,
with no interruptions. It was a heavenly feeling. I enjoyed it so much, that I was looking forward to
going every day. Sometimes when I went, I'd enjoy it so much, that I'd lose track of time. Whenever
that happened, I'd always be at risk of getting a speeding ticket

the consistency.
Marcus brought Betty to Elizabethan Desserts to tell her that the bakery should be closed. It was
hard for her since she believes it has a big potential. But Marcus reminded her about focus and
letting go. She finally embraced the idea. They also settled the ice cream issue and let other

Conclusion
Everyone in Betty's Pie Whole is glad with the huge change. People are more productive and the
work process runs smoothly. Marcus was so happy to see the people functioning well and very

Betty finally organized the recipes and compiled them neatly on several books. She now listens and
trusts Marcus more. He then surprised her. Both were so happy and in tears when Betty saw the

American Pie: Parallels To Real Life Activities
"American Pie": Parallels to Real Life Events The song "American Pie" by Don McLean has
sparked controversy over its meaning since it was released in 1971. Some people believe that
McLean's work is nothing more than simple rhymes, while others believe there is much deeper
meaning. McLean refuses to directly answer questions about the lyrics, so we are left to make our
own assumptions. There is only one line that McLean will speak about. The line is, "February made
me shiver / with every paper I'd deliver" (Line 7). This line speaks of the first time McLean learned
of Buddy Holly's death in 1959. At the time, McLean was a paperboy, and he saw the news on the

The Story Of My Life
The afternoon prayers from the mosque down the block, drowned out the harsh metal sounds Mum
was making with her pots and pans. I wondered when she got up to cook, an early riser myself, I
heard her bustling about in the kitchen before dawn. The aroma of fresh rosemary and cranberries
made my stomach make the most horrid noise, as I had skipped breakfast, but for this occasion, it
was worth the wait.
The prayer call ended and I Mum took out the plates; the fine china, not our usual boring ones. This
was my cue to help her set the table, as Dad was going to come home from the mosque soon. Mum
appreciated my help but she always switched things around after I had placed everything. I was
preoccupied, yearning to devour everything to care ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dad kept reaching for the mashed potatoes, which were the furthest from him and Mum, had frown
lines etched across her face. She switched up the plates because she wanted the healthier sides to be
closer to Dad's plate. Her plan didn't work, as Dad's plate was stacked with mashed potatoes and
turkey, with only small helping of the fruits and vegetables. Dad noticed her frown lines and
laughed. "Darling, come on, its Christmas!" Mum's frown lines disappeared and she responded,
"Okay sweetheart but tomorrow we are going to the gym to burn these off!"
Mum's plate was the rainbow; she had packed everything healthy onto her plate and just a spoonful
of mashed potato on the side. She didn't touch the turkey. I had asked her a few years ago why she
didn't eat turkey and she just said she didn't like the taste. I had seen old photographs of Mum and
her family during Christmas and they always had ham instead of turkey. Dad didn't eat ham at all
and he didn't like the idea of me eating it either so I only ever tasted it until I moved out, years later.
However, at the time I thought it was odd that Mum didn't have ham around the house even though
she liked it. A few weeks before Christmas, we went out for lunch and she got a ham sandwich. She
told me not to mention it to Dad. The guilt must have taken a toll on her, because after we got home,
I heard her throwing up.
Mum couldn't finish the helpings on her plate so she started feeding my Dad. She made airplane

1. Draw a circle with your protractor or stencil
2. Starting from the 12 o¡¦clock position on the circle, measure an angle of 180 degrees with your

Rhetorical Devices In American Pie
Isiah Jones
Professor Harley
LA 201

Essay 3
The song "American Pie', by Don McLean, was a dominate rock–and–roll hit in 1971. McLean
illustrates famous rock star artist and songwriter Buddy Holly, who died in a plane crash in 1962 by
using rhetorical strategies. The different potential interpretations of this song made it one of the
most controversial songs from the 1970's. McLean was hitting home with many emotional
resonances defining moments in the recent American experiences. "American Pie" starts out
addressing McLean love for music in the 50's. During the 50's, music was a tool for getting people
off their feet and on to the dance floors. "And I knew if I had my chance, that I could make those
people dance, and maybe they'd be happy for a while" (McLean). This verse symbolizes why he
loves to create and perform for his fans. McLean then goes on to mention his mentor Buddy Holly.
"But February made me shiver. With every paper, I'd deliver. Shocking news on the doorstep, I
couldn't take one more step. I can't remember if I cried. When I read about his widowed bride. But
something touched me deep inside. The day the music died" (McLean). Buddy Holly died on
February 3, 1959, in a plane crash. There are two theories on why the song was called "American
Pie." It was rumored, "American Pie" was the name of the plane that took Buddy Holly life. Also,
someone refers it to a symbol of the beauty queen Miss America (Morgan). Mclean remembered the
paper boy delivering the morning paper and there on the front page, was the story of the death of
Buddy Holly. At the time Holly's wife was pregnant and soon had a miscarriage afterward. McLean,
he says he can't remember if he cried in the moment or not. All this was in the first few verses in
"American Pie." McLean incorporated these lines of imagery to help the listener picture his past
emotional experiences. I believe McLean wanted to paint a picture for his audience could relate to.
During these times it was tough for McLean. Not only did Buddy Holly die but also rock star
legends Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper. For McLean music died for him and the rest of the
world.
"American Pie" not only pays tribute to three talented musicians but also

Don Mclean Pie Literary Devices
'American Pie' was written in 1971 and topped the music charts in 1972. Don Mclean wrote it partly
as a biography and partly as the story of the evolving America through the 1950's, 1960's, and
1970's. Don Mclean wrote the song to tell a story about his generation and how it had and continued
to change since he was younger. It took Mclean over ten years of work and with the combination of
many ideas American Pie was born. In American Pie by Don Mclean, he shows America's lost
innocence in the song after the 1950's through symbolism, allusion, and denotation. The first of the
two most abundant literary devices is symbolism. Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent and
idea or quality. The first example of symbolism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Miss American pie is a symbol for the 'American Dream', he is saying bye to that idea of the
American dream, of the idea of domesticity of the 1950's.Mclean delves much deeper into this
change of society and loss of the original American dream, to much more specific details. In the first
verse the line "With a pink carnation and a pickup truck/ but I knew I was out of luck" in the line we
see that what has worked in the past will no longer suffice. Times are changing and the expectation
of romance has changed along with society. The simplicity of a flower and a cool car, or truck in this
case, is not enough, romance is different now since the 1950's are over. Not only is romance
different but now the music is starting to change as well. In verse two the line "And moss grown at
on a rolling stone/ but that's not how it used to be", has multiple symbols in it. First this is a symbol
of Bob Dylan's change in musical style. Bob Dylan wrote 'Like a Rolling Stone' this song is his first
major shift away from folk music. After he wrote the song Dylan was involved in a motorcycle
accident and he basically hid out in his house for about a year. The 'fat moss' symbolizes the time

A Report On The Sun
Everyone loves waking up at eight in the morning to go to an auction, particularly a college student
whose classes don 't begin until noon, right? Wrong, especially one who has never been to an
auction, let alone woken up at eight in the morning since mid August. That morning, I was unaware
of my ability to learn so much about the microscopic Eastern Shore from a hoarder 's garage on
steroids. Surprisingly, it 's possible for a place that only holds eight percent of Maryland 's
population to be hectic, but also peaceful and eccentric; its inhabitants could be competitive,
friendly, and also rude, all at the same time.
Regardless of where I wanted to be, I was in Crumpton, MD on the last Wednesday of September.
The sun is nowhere to be seen while drizzling rain is stirring the dirt ground into mud, but regardless
of how dark and gloomy the morning felt, the colossal yellowish–green building managed to lighten
the mood. Its base is compiled of cement blocks and the roof is slanted, painted in a forest green to
match the large letters that read Dixson 's Furniture Auction. In front of the auction warehouse sat
items that belonged to someone at some point, but were in search of a new owner. Each item was
systematically scattered throughout the lot. Most items are what you would expect to see: wooden
chairs, wardrobes, and even some tables.

Persuasive Essay : How To Make My Favorite Apple Pie
Today I am going to explain how to make my favorite apple pie and also a little about why this is
something that my mother, my daughter and I choose to do every year. It's a labor of love that
actually started 5 years before I was even born with my mother and grandmother, they started
simply just making this pie for the family Thanksgiving that year and for the next few years without
fail. This continued until I was about 4 and old enough to help and ever since every year my mother
grandmother and I have spent hours in the kitchen making this recipe with the same cookbook and
the same pie tins that her and my grandmother used. When my daughter was born she was always in
the kitchen with us and has helped with the pies since she was 4 just like me. My grandmother
passed away a few years ago and this is our special way each year for her to remember her baba
nana and my mother and I to laugh and smile with her. It's a fairly long and drawn out process but
for ease of writing I will break it down the first thing is making sure you have your ingredients, next
you make the crust, then you make the filling, and finally you decorate and bake the pie. So here we
go the first step. When we get ready to start baking this pie my daughter and I go through the
kitchen and make sure that we have everything that we need. She gets up on a stool and makes sure
we have all the spices that we need for the pie. That includes nutmeg, cinnamon, sugar and salt for
the filling and for the crust. I

Famous Dinner Research Paper
The Famous Dinner Party
The food is made, the table is set, the room is decorated with turkeys, leaves, and pumpkins. Perfect
for thanksgiving. The whole room smelled like turkey, ham, and pumpkin pie.
" Mmm, it smells great in here," said Harry, as he walked through the big brown doors of the great
hall. " Thanks Harry, I'm so glad you came, but why are you here so early?" I asked.
" What do you mean I'm here early? I'm right on time, it's 4 o'clock. Where is everyone else?" He
asked.
"Thanksgiving dinner doesn't start until 5 o'clock. You must have read the invitation wrong." I
answered.
"Oh, whoops. I guess I can help you with whatever else you need to do before everyone else gets
here," Harry offered.
" I already have everything done, but you can keep me company while we wait for everyone to get
here," I suggested. " We are still waiting on Taylor, Cole and Donkey."
They sat down at the table and waited.
" I can't believe I'm back at Hogwarts, it feels like only yesterday that I got sorted into Gryffindor,"
he said.
They waited some more until finally,
" I'm here!!!!!!" screamed Donkey as he barged through the big brown doors, " Let's get this party
started. I'm starving,"
" Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but we still have to wait for Cole, and Taylor to get here," I
explained.
" Ughh" groaned Donkey. * * *
Finally, Cole and Taylor got there. " Hey guys, How's your thanksgiving so far?" asked Cole. " It's

Descriptive Essay About Cake Bake Shop
The most enchanting and sophisticated restaurant I have ever been to is The Cake Bake Shop. As

keep everything in the restaurant clean and well maintained. I never feel unwelcome or
uncomfortable while eating there. Each worker is dressed in a custom pink and white Cake Bake

Parisian ambience of the restaurant. The Cake Bake Shop has a very European and Parisian
decorative style. The restaurant is in a small, all white cottage house, which has a warm and cozy
feeling to it. The inside is decorated with crystal chandeliers, pink and white lights, marbled tables,
and giant pink trees. It feels as if you are eating at a café in Paris. At the back of the restaurant, there
is a long rectangular window that allows customers to watch the desserts and pastries being made.
Quiet jazz plays throughout the restaurant, which really adds to the overall atmosphere, making it
very peaceful and relaxing. The Cake Bake Shop offers special wine and cheese tastings over the

Narrative Essay About Pumpkin Pie
I remember the day when I found out what a pumpkin pie from the bakery of my street was made of
before the bakery never existed. It was a dark, frigid night in November, close to the week of
Thanksgiving. Before that night, I loved that pumpkin pie for its flavor, especially its smoothness.
This thought completely changed that night.
November 15th was the day. My little brother, Jeff, was craving for some pumpkin pie, and as usual,
my parents being biased, forced me to go fetch up some of that mouth–watering pumpkin pie. I
really didn't want to go, but I had to. I forced Jeff to go with me, not knowing the danger I'll get him
into. I took my dog, Mickey, with me so I could feel safe on the street during the night. In the
neighborhood I live, when the sun sets, dangerous people lurk the streets.
All three of us walked casually to the end of the street. We could really smell the delicious
fragrances of desserts and pastries such as the beignet, upside–down cake, cannoli, but most
importantly, the pumpkin pie. From its crust to its filling, the pumpkin pie brought me in the bakery.
I left Mickey outside, as per the "No Dogs" policy. Jeff and I were waiting in the lobby, waiting for
someone to take our order. A few minutes passed, and I began to get annoyed.
"Mistress, anyone?!" I yelled out.
"Pumpkin pie?" Jeff questioned.
No one seemed to come out. At first, I thought that the owner forgot to close–up or something, but I
could swear I could hear some noise from the kitchen. I

Analyzing Don Mclean's Song 'American Pie'
Frank Rambala
English IV H
Rough Draft
American Pie
Music is a form of literature that can be used as an instrument to express an artist's feelings through
their lyrics about a particular situation or topic. In the song "American Pie", Don McLean expresses
his feelings on how the generation is changing and how the influence of music will "die" because of
a tragic event. The wordage and tone of McLean's lyrics are written in a negative manner but
represented in a positive and upbeat song. Don McLean's song, "American Pie", reveals three
significant feelings, which include death, fear of change, and his devout faith.
The main theme that is notable in Don McLean's song is death. Written in 1971,"American Pie"

Living through the sixties, McLean was able to express what he witnessed and how he felt. Death
was one of his major themes in his song. The deaths of three famous singers was a major let down in
the music world. It raised many questions as to who was going to take over the spotlight, and how
music will forever change. Change also played a significant role in McLean's song. Society at the
time was going through many changes that would form the United States into what it is today.
Dealing with the many notable deaths and the many changes going on in society, the people seemed
to have too much to handle and ultimately the breakdown of society began. McLean who was also
dealing with the struggles of the 60's was able to find a safe haven with God. He used his strong
faith to overcome the struggles. Overall Don McLean put a lot of time and effort into his song
"American Pie". He took the time and put together meaningful lyrics that became one of the most
famous songs in history. Works Cited

Descriptive Essay About A White House
Driving down the path, lined with small American flags, I began to see the large white house. It is
quite an old house, however there were a few additions added. My mom pulled into the parking lot
of a driveway and started taking food out of the trunk and bringing it into the house. I could have
helped her, but instead I decided that I wanted to bring my luggage in and put it in the room that was
assigned for me. I jogged back down the stairs and was greeted by my uncle's girlfriend, Sandy.
Sandy is a wonderful, gentle, and kind woman who happens to be a good baker. She gave me a hug
and kissed my forehead, asking me how my trip was, and I told her that I slept the entire ride to
Maryland. After hearing this, she laughed and walked out on to the enclosed porch area. I walked
through the kitchen, grabbing a cup of water, and asked my mom when my dad would be getting
her. She told me that he would be here in two days because he must pick up a surprise; disappointed,
I walked outside and was greeted by the farm cat Tala, she is a very loving cat, even though she only
has one eye. I started petting her, and even held her for a little bit, playing with her tail and rubbing
her ears, anything to get her to stay cuddling with me. After about 10 minutes went by, she ran off,
chasing a bird. Standing up from my spot on the stairs, I headed towards the pool area assuming that
is where my uncle's voice is originating from, and I was correct, he was at his Tiki bar, making

The Song American Pie Is A Representation Of Loss During...
The song American Pie is a representation of loss during the transition into the 1970s. It was written
in 1971 by Don McLean and filled with his views on the state of society, political changes, and
cultural changes. The cultural changes and the loss of everything society knew produced the lost
generation that McLean was apart of. He demonstrated his disapproval of the direction of the
country by using music, faith, and war as examples of the changes and loss his generation faced.
Music heavily influences and creates a voice for the people of the time period it is written in and
also reflects the tone of the time period. Mclean's generation was impacted greatly by classic rock
and roll artists, such as Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly. Music direction and message portrayed the
prosperous nature of the 1950s and what life was like before the 1970s. The change in music
direction rooted from a tragedy that Mclean recognized with the verse, "But February made me
shiver". In February 3, 1959 Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson died in a plane crash.
Theses musicians were Mclean's heroes and rock and roll legends. McLean considered this to be
"the day the music died". After their deaths, music drastically changed. New musicians and styles of
music came into play. Buddy Holly and the other musicians before the Vietnam war sang uplifting
songs or songs with religious references. The verse "A long long time ago," is referring to the time
period of rock and roll and a

Food in Hamlet by William Shakespeare Essays
Food in Hamlet by William Shakespeare
Unlike some of Shakespeare's other plays Hamlet doesn't seem to contain as many references to
food. When researching food in reference to The Merry Wives of Windsor, it was easy to see much
of the symbolism behind the many references. One of the most interesting references to food in
Hamlet we discussed in class. I found it really interesting how Shakespeare used posset as a way to
describe poison clotting in the ear. Unfortunately though, references like this are few and far
between in Hamlet. One scene that I found fascinating was in act four, scene five. This is the scene
where, apparently mad, Ophelia begins to distribute various flowers. These flowers, ... Show more

The next herb that Ophelia distributes is fennel. While she doesn't say what this is for, in the version
of Hamlet edited by Mowat and Westine, a side note adds that, "fennel symbolized flattery and
deceit" (216). I believe she distributed the fennel to Claudius. Ophelia has now been deceived by
Hamlet, abandoned by her father's death, and left with controlling Laertes. Needless to say, Ophelia
is probably really wary of males at this point in her life. The flattery that the fennel stands for would
make it an appropriate gift to a King and it can mask the fact that it also represents deceit. I think
Ophelia knew that Claudius was up to no good, especially with his speedy marriage and ill treatment
of Hamlet. The deceit could also stand for Claudius using Ophelia to deceive Hamlet in order to
discern his true mental state. After examining all this information it seems only fitting that Ophelia
would distribute the fennel to the King.
Ophelia continues distributing her herbs, however this time she saves some for herself, "There's rue
for you, and here is some for me; we/ may call it herb of grace o' Sundays" (217). While it is unclear
exactly what this herb is, Ophelia is sure the meaning is not lost. By representing rue I feel that not
only did Ophelia keep this herb for herself, I believe she also gave

American Pie
With every aspect of our lives we are making a point, arguing a belief, or refuting some other aspect
of our existence. Aesthetic pieces, most avidly poems and songs, argue a message both in the lyrics
and in the meaning posed between the lines. "American Pie," in a multitude of ways, argues that
American lives and memories are closely intertwined with the music of the time period. Not only
does "American Pie" argue a message it also pulls many generations together. Today, thirty years
after the initial release, "American Pie" still has an effect in our music and continues to be popular
with all age groups. Don McLean accomplishes this task through using the context of the time
period, placement of words, the words ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Essentially, the late 1960s and early 1970s are an in between stage for America, where people were
exploring the many options in their lives. The release of "American Pie" in 1971 was a landmark in
pop music history because the song was eight minutes and thirty–two seconds long. Later, it was
divided up into two parts and then turned into the version that is known today (www.don–
mclean.com). Now that the time period that surrounded the release of "American Pie" is established
it is easier to understand the song because it can be read more in context.
The music of "American Pie" harkens back to a time of rock–n–roll, pianos, and acoustic guitars. A
time when the music was upbeat and peppy, causing you to want to jump up and dance. However,
the music during the time of its creation lacks the calming effect that is acquainted with the music of
previous eras. "American Pie" embodies many qualities of the music during the 1950s, including the
simplicity of the chord structures overall, the clear vocals, and well–known and used instruments.
With the use of simple but repetitive chords, Don McLean is able to shift the attention from the
musical facet of the song back to the lyrics and the individual person listening to it.
At the opening of "American Pie," Don McLean starts the song at a slow pace but then
progressively speeds up the pace through the first chorus. After the first chorus the music

Group Reflection Essay
Participation in group discussions has been a weakness for me, but I have communicated with my
PIE group everyday to discuss homework and exams. Although I was not a leader in the classroom,
I did serve as leader in my tri–pie and I took initiative to talk to Mrs. McMillan about my speech
and group. I believe I deserve a 90/100 in my communication and participation skills.
With my tri–pie, I would remind them everyday for homework, projects, and exams. I would explain
any questions they would have and provide extra info and study guides for them. For example, I
would insist that they do the quizlet I created for Freshmen and Sophomore vocabulary everyday for
at least 15 minutes a day. I also used videochat to help both of my members for presentation and
speeches. We would practice for at least 30 minutes for any presentation, such as the Side Project.
As a result, we got a 38/45. We took advantage of break by practicing our part during that time. This
helped us improve our abilities and skills on presentation because I would give my perspective on
our group's strengths and weaknesses. From this communication, I decided to create a group chat
called "Carrot Juice" to discuss our problems and how we could solve them by working together.
One of the problems we had was our grade checks, so we used our group chat to message each other
when to meet up, such as at break. By doing this, we were familiar with each other and our
communication began to grow because we began using this social platform more often. When one of
our PIE members was absent, we would use this group chat to collect and turn in their homework
even though they were not there. Furthermore, I communicated with Mrs. McMillan about my
speech and how I could improve on it. I took her notes into consideration about my posture and
engagement with the audience. I asked her how I could improve my specific flaws, which resulted in
me choosing a different story in my fifth attempt. Because of Mrs. McMillan's advice, I received an
all perfect on my speech. Additionally, I asked McMillan's advice on how I could further support my
group because I believed a person with year's of experience would be more helpful than doing it
alone. I discussed my

Analysis of American Pie Essay
As the song begins, the narrator seems to feel nostalgic about the music written by a certain person,
and he describes the way that music made him smile (1–3). He misses the music from the past that
could make people smile, and that could help them forget their troubles. McLean seems to be
referring to the 1950s, which is clearer in the chorus of the song. As the speaker goes on, he says,
"But February made me shiver / With every paper I'd deliver." Here it is widely believe that Don
McLean is referring to the death of Buddy Holly. He is said to have been delivering newspapers on
his paper route the February that he learned of Buddy Holly's death. The speaker identifies Holly by
the month of his death, and the, "widowed bride," (12) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He thought that the Beatles were warning America about the racial conflict happening at the time.
Manson wrote the title of the song on the wall in blood after committing the murders. In the line,
"We all got up to dance / Oh, but we never got the chance," the writer could be speaking about how
the Beatles wrote songs meant for listening and not dancing. Throughout this verse, the writer talks
about, "players." I believe that here he is most likely referring to the many protesters around this
time. He says, "sweet perfume," (57) most likely to refer to the use of tear gas against protestors. He
seems to believe that the government is corrupt when he says, "Cause the players tried to take the
field (61). Here he means that the protestors tried to create change but the government would not
allow them to make the changes. McLean continues his allusions to events happening around him
and in the past, and he again ends the verse with his constantly repeated line, "The day the music
died."
The next verse seems to focus on the events that happened at Altamont in 1969. "The flower
children gathered at Altamont, 300,000 strong, in a frenzy of drugs, alcohol and escalating violence"
(Fann). McLean is pointing out here that the ideas of the counterculture are obviously not going to

Descriptive Essay On The House
The back door of the moving truck slammed shut, making me slightly jump gasping in surprise. I
turned in my seat and look at the house, I've lived my whole life in. Gloomily I stare remembering
all the happy and sad times I've had here. "come on Kate stop thinking such sad thoughts the new
house is going to be great," I said clapping my hands over my face. The cab driver turned the
ignition key, and the cab rumbled to life. We start rolling forward down the street behind the moving
truck. Watching the houses move past me slowly lulling me to sleep. I close my eyes slipping into
the comfort of sleep. "HEY wake up we're almost there" the cab driver halfway yelled in his gruff
voice. I pop up looking curiously around me. My face crumples up in concern. I look out the
window and I see no houses. Then, suddenly I see in the distance two houses, one on either side of
the street. We pull up to the houses and the cab pulled into the driveway of one of the house. The
moving truck stops on the side of the road I get out of the cab. I stared unbelievably at the house that
we stopped at. I walk inside and look around. The house is already furnished. The furniture is clean
and looks like it hasn't ever been used. By the time I get outside to help get boxes from the moving
truck. The taxi, truck, and all the people are gone, leaving the few boxes of my stuff in the driveway.
I carry the small boxes into my bedroom. Starting to organize my stuff I hear what I believe to be
the doorbell.

What Is The Theme Of The Pie By Gary Soto
At some point in almost everyone's childhood, there is a moment of deliberate wrongdoing,
followed by panic and guilt. Perhaps it is standing on the water spout outside the house and
neglecting to inform an adult when the pipe breaks and spews water into the backyard. Maybe it is
lying to a parent about the whereabouts of a dollar after the ice cream truck goes by. For author Gary
Soto, it was stealing a pie from the neighborhood grocery store. In his autobiography, Soto recounts
the story and emotions of his six–year–old self taking an apple pie off the rack and walking home
with it, only to be overwhelmed by a guilt–ridden conscience. Throughout the narrative, Soto uses
imagery and precise diction to recreate his experiences as a guilty ... Show more content on

This changes with the appearance of Cross–Eyed Johnny, a neighborhood boy who asks for some
pie and is denied. Soto continues to eat, but "tears blurred [his] eyes as [he] remembered the grocer's
forehead". This time, the mention of tears is not "because it was about the best thing [he] had ever
tasted" but rather because he felt true guilt. He is reminded of the angelic grocer, and even though he
is beginning to feel horrible continues to stuff his face with pie. Cross–Eyed Johnny comments,
"your hands are dirty," before "[climbing] his roof" to watch the other boy eat. This once again
brings up the symbolism of dirty hands, as though they are tainted with sin. The symbolism
intensifies as Cross–Eyed Johnny "[jumps] off and [hobbles] away because the fall had hurt him".
This represents a fall from grace, for the young Soto has committed perhaps the worst sin of his six–
year–long life. He begins to feel paranoid and sees "the pie tin [glaring] at [him]" and feeling his
face "sticky with guilt". The personification of the pie tin shows that the boy feels like he is being
watched and judged for his sin, and wet imagery is once again used to describe the stickiness of
guilt. The sweetness was too tempting to resist, but now he has to deal with the guilt that clings to
him covers his conscience. As he sits on the curb, "A car

Family Traditions For Dysfunctional Families Essay
Family Traditions for Dysfunctional Families In todays world there are at least 1 Billion families.
Which means there has to be at least 1 Billion family traditions. Family traditions can be many
different things but my family traditions all can relate back to dysfunctionalism. There are more
dysfunctional families in the united states than normal families. More than 50% of happiness comes
from dysfunctional families and still, the celebrate Birthdays, Religious Holidays and Casual
Holidays . Can you imagine Holidays being the root of our happiness. What is a dysfunctional
family? "A dysfunctional family is where the relationship between the parent and child are strained
and unnatural" (Artical 1). Dysfunctional families can range from many different things such as
failing to be a provider for their child or lack of emotional, phychological and/or physical needs.
There are also different types of dysfunctional families. Dysfunctional families can be because of
addiction, alcohol, no emotional support, religious fundamentalism and rigidly dogmatic beliefs,
overly possessive parents and sexaul abuse.
First on the list is Birthday. Every year this day is celebrated with cake and gifts. Sure, this seems
casual but something makes it different. Once the kid reaches 18 whom ever brough them cakes, the
18 year old has to buy them for that person for 18 years. Crazy right? Well that is just the way things
go. Another tradion that we celebrate on birthday is the cutting of the

On the surface, a good number of films produced by Tim Burton prompt similar themes of dark
satire and grisly outcomes. However, throughout the progress of the film Sweeney Todd: The
Demon Barber of Fleet Street, I found my initial impressions of the typically grim director to be
baseless and skewed. From being introduced to songs like No Place Like London and my personal
favorite, A Little Priest, to the surreal interpretation of lust, loss, and revenge; Burton's establishes
his take on mischief, malice, and meat pies through each individual scene and character

After returning to the place that gave him hurt, Sweeney Todd outs two scam artists, one of them
named Adolfo, who are selling a potion to a cure for hair loss and defeats them in a shaving
competition. The song at this arc that stands out the most is The Contest, not because it is centered
on this scenario, but because the visionaries of the play and film adaption did an excellent job in
portraying the times of penny dreadfuls. This is also where we get to see a contrast between
characters – Todd vs. Adolfo. Coincidentally, Adolfo had previously worked for Sweeney Todd and
attempted to blackmail him, but was eventually murdered by Todd.
Sweeney Todd's friend Anthony, the boy who accompanied him on the ship back to London, informs
Todd of his plan to elope with Todd's daughter, Johanna, which places him in direct competition
with Judge Turpin for Johanna's hand in marriage. Judge Turpin finally finds his way into the
clutches of Sweeney Todd, but before Todd can exact his revenge, his friend Anthony reveals his
plan to elope with Johanna. Judge Turpin storms out and Sweeney Todd drives Anthony from the
premises in a fit of rage. Sweeney Todd suddenly takes a mass murderous turn and decides that all
people deserve to die: the wealthy for their sins and corruption and the poor to be taken out of their
misery. Thus ends the first act of the play.

"Did they ever stop?" Aunt Kaylee asked. "What do you mean Kaylee?" "Did something happen
between them?" Aunt Kaylee was clueless. "Yes. Ryan told Victoria that Todd and I don't love her as
much now that Julia was born." "Ryan said that!" Aunt Kaylee said in astonishment. "That's what
Victoria said." Mom prepared a bottle for Julia. "I'm so sorry! I had no idea he said that!" "That is
okay. I mean they are getting along now, so." A few hours latter, "Kids Nanna made pie!" Aunt
Kaylee shouted. I ran inside and got the last piece of cherry pie. A few seconds after I sat down
Ryan ran in. "Is there still pie left?" He asked. "No! Victoria got the last piece." Uncle Rowlen
replied. "Hey Ryan you can have some of mine if you want!" I offered. "Are you sure?" Ryan asked.
"Yes!" I patted the seat next to me. We shared that last piece of pie, then played for the rest of the
day. After everything that happened in these few months I learned something. Even with the new
baby Mom and Dad do still love me. Also, sometimes when people are mean their is almost always

The Change In The Song 'American Pie' By Don Mclean
The Day that Music Died "American Pie," written by Don McLean, was a very intriguing song that
described the change in music from the 1950s to the 1970s. Don McLean wrote this song in 1971,
and this song has since been one of the most debated and discussed songs ever. McLean seemed to
be angered by all this change in music but more importantly, the world. The world was completely
different and most of the change was due to the change in music. Moreover, Holden, in Catcher in
the Rye, hated change and blamed it on everyone just like how McLean blames all of this change on
music. Our society was forever changed by the types of music displayed from the late 1950s to the
1970s. Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and ... Show more content on

What is odd about this song is that it seems to be a slow song, but that's not the case. Now, in
"American Pie," McLean says "Well, I know that you're in love with him." This correlates with the
verse form "Hound Dog" in a way that women troubled men greatly during this time, and that they
were all the men thought about. Also, Elvis says,
You ain't nothin' but a hound dog cryin' all the time.
Presley says this because this woman was always crying to him about the relationship when in
reality she was cheating on him. Whether it was reality or not, Presley sure made a great song that
caught people's attention. This relates to how American Pie talks about the 50s and how women
were the main focus for younger men at this time.
Secondly, Buddy Holly produced some of the most influential work in rock music in the late 50s,
including his most famous piece of work, "That'll Be the Day." This song has since been a hit
because of his distinctiveness and how his lyrics attracted people. His lyrics were always linked to
women; which set the road for music being about women. "That'll Be the Day" was constantly a top
hit when released due to its rhythm. In the song, Holly says,
Yes, that'll be the day when you make me cry
You say you gonna leave, you know it's a lie
'Cause that'll be the day when I

Analysis Of The Song ' American Pie '
Bye, Bye,
When my brother and I were younger our dad used to play his records for us. The record player was
an ugly plastic box, situated in the corner of our then unfinished basement. More than anything else,
I remember him playing the song "American Pie"by Don McLean. To this day I can still sing the
majority of the lyrics of the eight and a half minute song from memory. According to my brother, we
were the ones repeatedly asking my dad to play it, but in my memory, it was always my dad just
playing it for us unprompted.
Something in the song awoke an exuberance in my brother, Spencer and I. We would jump and
dance on the couch during the fast parts, and sway and spin during the slow. The lyrics were
exciting, but also really tragic. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are parts of American history that are shameful, tragic. The event that sparked the writing of
this song is one of those tragic moments. There are many parts of American history that I can't be
proud of. We have done, and continue to do terrible acts. "American Pie" acknowledges the sadness
of a terrible event, and I think that is important. We are too quick to forget bad events and actions.
Many Americans believe that the past was somehow better than the present. We can't return to our
former glory if we never really had it in the first place.
On the other hand, a big part of "American Pie" for me is the nostalgia. I have good memories
attached to the song. American could be better, but on a more personal level I love my home. I love
my family and friends I and here with. I am not personally patriotic in the original definition of the
word. I don't love my country because it is good, I love it because of the people here that I know to
be good.
I confess, there are parts of this song I still don't understand. I still don't quite get the meaning
behind the chorus, or if it has a meaning beyond what is actually written. What the deeper meanings
of several of the verses still eludes me too. The stories that it tells (that I mentioned earlier) are part
of what characterizes "American Pie" as the American Dream for me.
I am a storyteller at heart, I think. This song, more than almost any other for me, made me imagine.
Perhaps the writer's meaning

Persecution Of A Pie

  • 1. Persecution Of A Pie How to Split a "Pie" A pie, a knife and the people behind it. The pie represents Africa and the knife used by Europeans is what split it up. Africa was split up and divided among all of the European countries, they did whatever they could to dice it up too. The Europeans suppressed and enslaved the Africans, they also forced their disease and culture onto them. People could not speak up for their freedom they could only wait and survive. This was the idea of some of the African people. Not many spoke out because they would either be beaten or killed and this frightened them. Hundreds of working blacks and loud shouting whites, these are a few of many things that you could have witnessed if you were there. The blacks were forced and abused ... • 2. A Short Story : A Black Dream Story A sudden noise woke Clemmie. A black dream swirled in her head, but no matter how much she tried to grasp it, she could not hold on to the nightmare which tainted her dreams. Then, from out of nowhere, her tummy grumbled and growled, but since she had amnesia, she could not even remember the last time she ate. A small chunk of bread, or even an apple would be enough to stave off her hunger pangs for now. Where could she find food at this time of night? One eye, then the other, poked above the covers on her bed. Where was she? Every time she woke, it was in a different room; first it was the white room, then the study, and now she was someplace new. She couldn't help but marvel at how she seemed to move around by magic. Yet, isn't that what dead people do, move from room to room, as they haunt houses? And then she saw a faint slither of light under the door. Well, since she couldn't go back to sleep, she kicked off the covers and crept across the floor. The hinges didn't squeak, and soon she was on the landing. First, she looked to the left, and then to the right, poised to retreat back inside the room if someone came along. Merging with the shadows as much as she could, she made her first tentative steps towards the stairs. Then, down and down she went. A clock in the entrance hall struck one o'clock but she didn't want to linger. When she reached the lower levels, her bare feet skipped across the cold stone floor, until at last, she found the kitchen. And what an amazing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Descriptive Essay About Michaelmas Michaelmas Every year, on the colorful fall day of September 29th, Sacramento Waldorf School hosts a festival where good triumphs and evil parishes. Young girls and boys eagerly dress up as knights, to help Saint George and Saint Michael conquer and tame the malicious dragon, through good actions and deeds. Along with fun activities, caramel apples, and motivating spirit, Michaelmas is a special way to prepare students for the challenging academic year ahead. Michaelmas is a whole school event, where grades first through twelve are assigned a different role, to put on a show that has its own unique twist each time. The roles include villagers (played by first through fourth grade), Knights (played by the fifth grade) the dragon (Played by the sixth grade), Lords and nobles (played by seventh through eleventh grade) and lastly, Saint George and Saint Michael (played by twelfth graders). The story told is a classic good vs. evil, preformed inside a giant circle, created by everyone attending the festival. A town of poor villages are fearful of a dragon, who is merciless and cruel. One day, the dragon attacks the village, leaving the villagers desperate and frightened. All the noble knights flee in fear, except for one, Saint George. Saint George bravely faces the dragon, but instead of using his sword, he kneels and prays to saint Michael to give him wisdom and strength. Michael appears out of the heavens, and empowers Saint George, with courage, and kindness. Saint George ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. How Different Are Our Thanksgivings How different are our Thanksgivings really? How many people do you know that do things differently than you for Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving is a time where you get your whole family together and spend time with each other. During your time together, you reminisce about hilariously weird memories and laugh at all of the amazingly fun times you guys have had together. Also, you feast and make more memories that you will have with you forever! When your with whoever's house you go to, you get to be you and not worry about what anyone thinks because you know your family loves you the way you are. Writing this essay could make you have an open mind about others and how different we celebrate our holiday. Most of my peers and I eat the same thing. Some things are Turkey, Mashed Potatoes, and Mac n Cheese. More things we all eat in common is Ham, Stuffing, and Green Bean Casserole, and ect. Also, we all have pies and something to do with vegetables. Not everyone has the same type of thing but have something to do with one thing. Although, the main courses of our food is the same with most people. Everyone has at most three things the same whether it's a type of pie or actual food, they are the same. About six, maybe more, are different than what we eat. One thing is dumplings, not everyone eats dumplings. Green Beans, cheese and cracker platter, chips and dip, and French Silk Pie are all more examples of what we eat differently than others. For Thanksgiving, some have seven pies or they have one pie, or we have pecan pie and someone else has apple pie. We all have different qualities of certain food depending on who like it. Making some new food this year would be a great idea, because you don't know if you like it or not, and you won't know unless you try it. The activities we do inside are different, some play video games or watch football or basketball. My family along with many others play board games and reminisce over our most prized and favorite memories. Also our behavior around each other is kind and caring because we care about one another. • 6. American Pie, by Don McLean Essay Analysis of the song "American Pie", by Don McLean The song "American Pie", by Don McLean, was a major rock–and–roll hit in 1971. McLean portrays famous rock–and–roll singer and songwriter Buddy Holly, who died in a plane crash in 1961 by using many rhetorical strategies. The different possible interpretations of this song made it one of the most controversial songs from the 1970's. Don McLean was a famous singer/songwriter who was popular in the 1970's. His music is mostly classified into rock–and–roll. The audience of this song can be anyone. The majority of the people listening to the song in the 1970's were hippies, or people who had open minds. The purpose of this song is not just to entertain people with beautiful music, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The address to the term, "Miss American Pie" references a plane that went down killing singer Buddy Holly. The line, "The quartet practiced in the park," refers to the famous pop group Beatles who became famous shortly after the death of Holly. All of the other symbolism in this song revolves events that happened around that time of Holly's death. McLean uses informal irony in the tone of the song to convey this deep symbolism. Because of the depth, there is a big controversy on what some of the words represent. Some people even think "Miss American Pie" represents the civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.. One example of McLean's use of irony is in the story about Holly. The irony comes from how he describes when Holly was younger, "he borrowed a coat from James Dean," and then many years later he was a famous singer. McLean uses a subjective point of view as he uses his interpretations, comments, and judgments to appeal to pathos in this song. McLean uses only two of the rhetorical appeals. Ethos is used when he describes the other singers most people know about. "And while Lenin read a book on Marx," emphasizes ethos because Lenin was a famous singer who people respect. Pathos was used throughout the whole piece especially when he said "the lovers cried and the poets screamed." This quote describes the people's sadness towards the death of Holly, which appeals to the listener in many emotional ways. He also uses ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Van Was No Longer A Toy Soon as we got home, they were trying to get the toy. I told them to go in the house, while I get the toy. Fast forward, later that even, it was time for the children to do their homework. My oldest son, Alento asked for the keys, to get his pencil, that he dropped in the trunk. I told him to borrow a pencil from somebody, to do his homework. All while I wasn't using the trunk, nobody ever said anything about it! For some reason, it seemed like, every since Brianna's toy was tossed in the trunk, everybody had a reason to go back there. All of a sudden, they wanted to keep their backpacks in the trunk, like their friends did. I had to explain to them, that their friends had to keep their bags in the trunk because their families had cars. They didn't have room in a car, like we had in the van. That's when I knew that the van was no longer a good hiding place. That's when I decided to get my snacks in, another way. I started sneaking to fast food restaurants. I'd often go to a restaurant to order ice cream and chocolate chip cookies, or ice cream and apple pie. I'd sometimes order two pies. Sneaking to the restaurant was like going on a vacation. I was able to peacefully eat my desserts, with no interruptions. It was a heavenly feeling. I enjoyed it so much, that I was looking forward to going every day. Sometimes when I went, I'd enjoy it so much, that I'd lose track of time. Whenever that happened, I'd always be at risk of getting a speeding ticket ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Rhetorical Devices In American Pie Isiah Jones Professor Harley LA 201 29 November 2017 Essay 3 The song "American Pie', by Don McLean, was a dominate rock–and–roll hit in 1971. McLean illustrates famous rock star artist and songwriter Buddy Holly, who died in a plane crash in 1962 by using rhetorical strategies. The different potential interpretations of this song made it one of the most controversial songs from the 1970's. McLean was hitting home with many emotional resonances defining moments in the recent American experiences. "American Pie" starts out addressing McLean love for music in the 50's. During the 50's, music was a tool for getting people off their feet and on to the dance floors. "And I knew if I had my chance, that I could make those people dance, and maybe they'd be happy for a while" (McLean). This verse symbolizes why he loves to create and perform for his fans. McLean then goes on to mention his mentor Buddy Holly. "But February made me shiver. With every paper, I'd deliver. Shocking news on the doorstep, I couldn't take one more step. I can't remember if I cried. When I read about his widowed bride. But something touched me deep inside. The day the music died" (McLean). Buddy Holly died on February 3, 1959, in a plane crash. There are two theories on why the song was called "American Pie." It was rumored, "American Pie" was the name of the plane that took Buddy Holly life. Also, someone refers it to a symbol of the beauty queen Miss America (Morgan). Mclean remembered the paper boy delivering the morning paper and there on the front page, was the story of the death of Buddy Holly. At the time Holly's wife was pregnant and soon had a miscarriage afterward. McLean, he says he can't remember if he cried in the moment or not. All this was in the first few verses in "American Pie." McLean incorporated these lines of imagery to help the listener picture his past emotional experiences. I believe McLean wanted to paint a picture for his audience could relate to. During these times it was tough for McLean. Not only did Buddy Holly die but also rock star legends Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper. For McLean music died for him and the rest of the world. • 17. Don Mclean Pie Literary Devices 'American Pie' was written in 1971 and topped the music charts in 1972. Don Mclean wrote it partly as a biography and partly as the story of the evolving America through the 1950's, 1960's, and 1970's. Don Mclean wrote the song to tell a story about his generation and how it had and continued to change since he was younger. It took Mclean over ten years of work and with the combination of many ideas American Pie was born. In American Pie by Don Mclean, he shows America's lost innocence in the song after the 1950's through symbolism, allusion, and denotation. The first of the two most abundant literary devices is symbolism. Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent and idea or quality. The first example of symbolism ... In the first verse the line "With a pink carnation and a pickup truck/ but I knew I was out of luck" in the line we see that what has worked in the past will no longer suffice. Times are changing and the expectation of romance has changed along with society. The simplicity of a flower and a cool car, or truck in this case, is not enough, romance is different now since the 1950's are over. Not only is romance different but now the music is starting to change as well. In verse two the line "And moss grown at on a rolling stone/ but that's not how it used to be", has multiple symbols in it. First this is a symbol of Bob Dylan's change in musical style. • 27. The Song American Pie Is A Representation Of Loss During... The song American Pie is a representation of loss during the transition into the 1970s. It was written in 1971 by Don McLean and filled with his views on the state of society, political changes, and cultural changes. The cultural changes and the loss of everything society knew produced the lost generation that McLean was apart of. He demonstrated his disapproval of the direction of the country by using music, faith, and war as examples of the changes and loss his generation faced. Music heavily influences and creates a voice for the people of the time period it is written in and also reflects the tone of the time period. Mclean's generation was impacted greatly by classic rock and roll artists, such as Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly. Music direction and message portrayed the prosperous nature of the 1950s and what life was like before the 1970s. The change in music direction rooted from a tragedy that Mclean recognized with the verse, "But February made me shiver". In February 3, 1959 Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson died in a plane crash. Theses musicians were Mclean's heroes and rock and roll legends. McLean considered this to be "the day the music died". After their deaths, music drastically changed. New musicians and styles of music came into play. • 28. Food in Hamlet by William Shakespeare Essays Food in Hamlet by William Shakespeare Unlike some of Shakespeare's other plays Hamlet doesn't seem to contain as many references to food. When researching food in reference to The Merry Wives of Windsor, it was easy to see much of the symbolism behind the many references. One of the most interesting references to food in Hamlet we discussed in class. I found it really interesting how Shakespeare used posset as a way to describe poison clotting in the ear. Unfortunately though, references like this are few and far between in Hamlet. One scene that I found fascinating was in act four, scene five. This is the scene where, apparently mad, Ophelia begins to distribute various flowers. These flowers, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The next herb that Ophelia distributes is fennel. While she doesn't say what this is for, in the version of Hamlet edited by Mowat and Westine, a side note adds that, "fennel symbolized flattery and deceit" (216). I believe she distributed the fennel to Claudius. Ophelia has now been deceived by Hamlet, abandoned by her father's death, and left with controlling Laertes. Needless to say, Ophelia is probably really wary of males at this point in her life. The flattery that the fennel stands for would make it an appropriate gift to a King and it can mask the fact that it also represents deceit. I think Ophelia knew that Claudius was up to no good, especially with his speedy marriage and ill treatment of Hamlet. The deceit could also stand for Claudius using Ophelia to deceive Hamlet in order to discern his true mental state. After examining all this information it seems only fitting that Ophelia would distribute the fennel to the King. Ophelia continues distributing her herbs, however this time she saves some for herself, "There's rue for you, and here is some for me; we/ may call it herb of grace o' Sundays" (217). While it is unclear exactly what this herb is, Ophelia is sure the meaning is not lost. By representing rue I feel that not only did Ophelia keep this herb for herself, I believe she also gave ... • 29. American Pie Essay American Pie With every aspect of our lives we are making a point, arguing a belief, or refuting some other aspect of our existence. Aesthetic pieces, most avidly poems and songs, argue a message both in the lyrics and in the meaning posed between the lines. "American Pie," in a multitude of ways, argues that American lives and memories are closely intertwined with the music of the time period. Not only does "American Pie" argue a message it also pulls many generations together. Today, thirty years after the initial release, "American Pie" still has an effect in our music and continues to be popular with all age groups. Don McLean accomplishes this task through using the context of the time period, placement of words, the words ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Essentially, the late 1960s and early 1970s are an in between stage for America, where people were exploring the many options in their lives. The release of "American Pie" in 1971 was a landmark in pop music history because the song was eight minutes and thirty–two seconds long. Later, it was divided up into two parts and then turned into the version that is known today (www.don– mclean.com). Now that the time period that surrounded the release of "American Pie" is established it is easier to understand the song because it can be read more in context. The music of "American Pie" harkens back to a time of rock–n–roll, pianos, and acoustic guitars. A time when the music was upbeat and peppy, causing you to want to jump up and dance. However, the music during the time of its creation lacks the calming effect that is acquainted with the music of previous eras. "American Pie" embodies many qualities of the music during the 1950s, including the simplicity of the chord structures overall, the clear vocals, and well–known and used instruments. With the use of simple but repetitive chords, Don McLean is able to shift the attention from the musical facet of the song back to the lyrics and the individual person listening to it. At the opening of "American Pie," Don McLean starts the song at a slow pace but then progressively speeds up the pace through the first chorus. After the first chorus the music ... • 30. Group Reflection Essay Participation in group discussions has been a weakness for me, but I have communicated with my PIE group everyday to discuss homework and exams. Although I was not a leader in the classroom, I did serve as leader in my tri–pie and I took initiative to talk to Mrs. McMillan about my speech and group. I believe I deserve a 90/100 in my communication and participation skills. With my tri–pie, I would remind them everyday for homework, projects, and exams. I would explain any questions they would have and provide extra info and study guides for them. For example, I would insist that they do the quizlet I created for Freshmen and Sophomore vocabulary everyday for at least 15 minutes a day. I also used videochat to help both of my members for presentation and speeches. We would practice for at least 30 minutes for any presentation, such as the Side Project. As a result, we got a 38/45. We took advantage of break by practicing our part during that time. This helped us improve our abilities and skills on presentation because I would give my perspective on our group's strengths and weaknesses. From this communication, I decided to create a group chat called "Carrot Juice" to discuss our problems and how we could solve them by working together. One of the problems we had was our grade checks, so we used our group chat to message each other when to meet up, such as at break. By doing this, we were familiar with each other and our communication began to grow because we began using this social platform more often. When one of our PIE members was absent, we would use this group chat to collect and turn in their homework even though they were not there. Furthermore, I communicated with Mrs. McMillan about my speech and how I could improve on it. I took her notes into consideration about my posture and engagement with the audience. I asked her how I could improve my specific flaws, which resulted in me choosing a different story in my fifth attempt. Because of Mrs. McMillan's advice, I received an all perfect on my speech. Additionally, I asked McMillan's advice on how I could further support my group because I believed a person with year's of experience would be more helpful than doing it alone. I discussed my ... • 31. Analysis of American Pie Essay As the song begins, the narrator seems to feel nostalgic about the music written by a certain person, and he describes the way that music made him smile (1–3). He misses the music from the past that could make people smile, and that could help them forget their troubles. McLean seems to be referring to the 1950s, which is clearer in the chorus of the song. As the speaker goes on, he says, "But February made me shiver / With every paper I'd deliver." Here it is widely believe that Don McLean is referring to the death of Buddy Holly. He is said to have been delivering newspapers on his paper route the February that he learned of Buddy Holly's death. He thought that the Beatles were warning America about the racial conflict happening at the time. Manson wrote the title of the song on the wall in blood after committing the murders. In the line, "We all got up to dance / Oh, but we never got the chance," the writer could be speaking about how the Beatles wrote songs meant for listening and not dancing. Throughout this verse, the writer talks about, "players." I believe that here he is most likely referring to the many protesters around this time. He says, "sweet perfume," (57) most likely to refer to the use of tear gas against protestors. He seems to believe that the government is corrupt when he says, "Cause the players tried to take the field (61). Here he means that the protestors tried to create change but the government would not allow them to make the changes. McLean continues his allusions to events happening around him and in the past, and he again ends the verse with his constantly repeated line, "The day the music died." The next verse seems to focus on the events that happened at Altamont in 1969. "The flower children gathered at Altamont, 300,000 strong, in a frenzy of drugs, alcohol and escalating violence" (Fann). • 32. Descriptive Essay On The House The back door of the moving truck slammed shut, making me slightly jump gasping in surprise. I turned in my seat and look at the house, I've lived my whole life in. Gloomily I stare remembering all the happy and sad times I've had here. "come on Kate stop thinking such sad thoughts the new house is going to be great," I said clapping my hands over my face. The cab driver turned the ignition key, and the cab rumbled to life. We start rolling forward down the street behind the moving truck. Watching the houses move past me slowly lulling me to sleep. I close my eyes slipping into the comfort of sleep. "HEY wake up we're almost there" the cab driver halfway yelled in his gruff voice. I pop up looking curiously around me. My face crumples up in concern. I look out the window and I see no houses. Then, suddenly I see in the distance two houses, one on either side of the street. We pull up to the houses and the cab pulled into the driveway of one of the house. The moving truck stops on the side of the road I get out of the cab. I stared unbelievably at the house that we stopped at. I walk inside and look around. The house is already furnished. The furniture is clean and looks like it hasn't ever been used. By the time I get outside to help get boxes from the moving truck. • 33. What Is The Theme Of The Pie By Gary Soto At some point in almost everyone's childhood, there is a moment of deliberate wrongdoing, followed by panic and guilt. Perhaps it is standing on the water spout outside the house and neglecting to inform an adult when the pipe breaks and spews water into the backyard. Maybe it is lying to a parent about the whereabouts of a dollar after the ice cream truck goes by. For author Gary Soto, it was stealing a pie from the neighborhood grocery store. In his autobiography, Soto recounts the story and emotions of his six–year–old self taking an apple pie off the rack and walking home with it, only to be overwhelmed by a guilt–ridden conscience. Throughout the narrative, Soto uses imagery and precise diction to recreate his experiences as a guilty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This changes with the appearance of Cross–Eyed Johnny, a neighborhood boy who asks for some pie and is denied. Soto continues to eat, but "tears blurred [his] eyes as [he] remembered the grocer's forehead". This time, the mention of tears is not "because it was about the best thing [he] had ever tasted" but rather because he felt true guilt. He is reminded of the angelic grocer, and even though he is beginning to feel horrible continues to stuff his face with pie. Cross–Eyed Johnny comments, "your hands are dirty," before "[climbing] his roof" to watch the other boy eat. This once again brings up the symbolism of dirty hands, as though they are tainted with sin. The symbolism intensifies as Cross–Eyed Johnny "[jumps] off and [hobbles] away because the fall had hurt him". This represents a fall from grace, for the young Soto has committed perhaps the worst sin of his six– year–long life. He begins to feel paranoid and sees "the pie tin [glaring] at [him]" and feeling his face "sticky with guilt". The personification of the pie tin shows that the boy feels like he is being watched and judged for his sin, and wet imagery is once again used to describe the stickiness of guilt. The sweetness was too tempting to resist, but now he has to deal with the guilt that clings to him covers his conscience. As he sits on the curb, "A car ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, throughout the progress of the film Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, I found my initial impressions of the typically grim director to be baseless and skewed. From being introduced to songs like No Place Like London and my personal favorite, A Little Priest, to the surreal interpretation of lust, loss, and revenge; Burton's establishes his take on mischief, malice, and meat pies through each individual scene and character development. Moreover, each musical number complements not only the twist and turns of the plot, but also each character's respective personalities. The reinterpretation of what ... The song at this arc that stands out the most is The Contest, not because it is centered on this scenario, but because the visionaries of the play and film adaption did an excellent job in portraying the times of penny dreadfuls. This is also where we get to see a contrast between characters – Todd vs. Adolfo. Coincidentally, Adolfo had previously worked for Sweeney Todd and attempted to blackmail him, but was eventually murdered by Todd. Sweeney Todd's friend Anthony, the boy who accompanied him on the ship back to London, informs Todd of his plan to elope with Todd's daughter, Johanna, which places him in direct competition with Judge Turpin for Johanna's hand in marriage. Judge Turpin finally finds his way into the clutches of Sweeney Todd, but before Todd can exact his revenge, his friend Anthony reveals his plan to elope with Johanna. Judge Turpin storms out and Sweeney Todd drives Anthony from the premises in a fit of rage. The Change In The Song 'American Pie' By Don Mclean The Day that Music Died "American Pie," written by Don McLean, was a very intriguing song that described the change in music from the 1950s to the 1970s. Don McLean wrote this song in 1971, and this song has since been one of the most debated and discussed songs ever. McLean seemed to be angered by all this change in music but more importantly, the world. The world was completely different and most of the change was due to the change in music. Moreover, Holden, in Catcher in the Rye, hated change and blamed it on everyone just like how McLean blames all of this change on music. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What is odd about this song is that it seems to be a slow song, but that's not the case. Now, in "American Pie," McLean says "Well, I know that you're in love with him." This correlates with the verse form "Hound Dog" in a way that women troubled men greatly during this time, and that they were all the men thought about. Also, Elvis says, You ain't nothin' but a hound dog cryin' all the time. Presley says this because this woman was always crying to him about the relationship when in reality she was cheating on him. Whether it was reality or not, Presley sure made a great song that caught people's attention. This relates to how American Pie talks about the 50s and how women were the main focus for younger men at this time. Secondly, Buddy Holly produced some of the most influential work in rock music in the late 50s, including his most famous piece of work, "That'll Be the Day." This song has since been a hit because of his distinctiveness and how his lyrics attracted people. His lyrics were always linked to women; which set the road for music being about women. "That'll Be the Day" was constantly a top hit when released due to its rhythm. • 40. Analysis Of The Song ' American Pie ' Bye, Bye, When my brother and I were younger our dad used to play his records for us. The record player was an ugly plastic box, situated in the corner of our then unfinished basement. More than anything else, I remember him playing the song "American Pie"by Don McLean. To this day I can still sing the majority of the lyrics of the eight and a half minute song from memory. According to my brother, we were the ones repeatedly asking my dad to play it, but in my memory, it was always my dad just playing it for us unprompted. Something in the song awoke an exuberance in my brother, Spencer and I. We would jump and dance on the couch during the fast parts, and sway and spin during the slow. The event that sparked the writing of this song is one of those tragic moments. There are many parts of American history that I can't be proud of. We have done, and continue to do terrible acts. "American Pie" acknowledges the sadness of a terrible event, and I think that is important. We are too quick to forget bad events and actions. Many Americans believe that the past was somehow better than the present. We can't return to our former glory if we never really had it in the first place. On the other hand, a big part of "American Pie" for me is the nostalgia. I have good memories attached to the song. American could be better, but on a more personal level I love my home. I love my family and friends I and here with. I am not personally patriotic in the original definition of the word. I don't love my country because it is good, I love it because of the people here that I know to be good. I confess, there are parts of this song I still don't understand. I still don't quite get the meaning behind the chorus, or if it has a meaning beyond what is actually written. What the deeper meanings of several of the verses still eludes me too.
