2.  While at rest , a healthy adult averages
12breaths/min.
 With each inhalation and exhalation moving
about 500ml of air in and out of the lungs/breath
 The total volume of air inhaled and exhaled per
minute is called MINUTE VENTILATION.
 MV=12breaths/min X 500ml/ breath= 6lit/min
 TIDAL VOLUME : the volume of 1 breath=500ml

3.  The apparatus commonly used to measure
the volume of air exchanged during breathing
and the respiratory rate is called
SPIROMETER.
 The record is called SPIROGRAM
 Inhalation is recorded as upward deflection
and expiration is recorded as downward
deflection.
 The air that is present in the conducting zone
only which do not undergo any gaseous
exchange is called ANATOMIC DEAD
SPACE

4.  ALVEOLAR VENTILATION RATE:
The volume of air that actually reaches the respiratory zone.
AVR=350ml/breath x 12 breaths/min= 4200ml/min

5.  RESIDUAL VOLUME:
 Even after the expiratory reserve volume is
exhaled , considerable amount of air
remains in the lungs to prevent collapse at
it amounts about 1200 in males and 1100
in females.
 FEV1:FORCED EXPIRATORY VOLUME IN

 The volume of air that can be exhaled from
lungs in 1 sec with maximal effort following a
maximal inhalation.

6.  EXPIRATORY RESERVE VOLUME:
The amount of extra air exhaled during a forceful
breath.
Normal is 1100ml
 INSPIRATORY RESERVE VOLUME(IRV):
THE Additional amount of air that can be
inhaled after normal inspiration .
 Normal IRV: 2000-3000ml

7.  FUNCTIONAL RESIDUAL CAPACITY:
RESIDUAL VOLUME + Expiratory reserve volume
=1200ml+1200ml=2400ml in males
=1100ml+700ml =1800ml in females.
 INSPIRATORY CAPACITY= TV+IRV
500ML+3100ML=3600MI IN MALES
500ML+1900ML=2400ml in females

8.  TOTAL LUNG CAPACITY= VC+RESIDUAL VOLUME
 4800ml+1200ml=6000ml
 3100ml+1100ml+4200ml
 VITAL CAPACITY= IRV+TV=ERV
 4800ml in males and 3100ml in females
