The Smiling Man (2015)
1.
2. In conventional thriller movies camera angles used are often either low or high to show who's in power, horror and thriller movies also use things like establishing
shots and points of view shots. The smiling man uses high angle shots when the little girl is shown to show the audience that she is vulnerable. The smiling man
himself is just shown in medium shots showing he is scary however he doesn't have much power. The cinematography in the movie shows how vulnerable the young
girl is for example on the stairs scene as the camera mostly looks down on her.
3. The smiling man doesn't use many edits through out the movie. The lighting used through out the movie is dark
with one or two spots of lighting. There is a use of match on action when the young girl steps down from the step
and picks up the blue balloon. There is mostly match on action being used as most of the editing. The move uses
mostly medium shots and different depth of focus.

5. Costumes:
The young girl is wearing
conventional clothes that
portray her youth and
innocence. Her hair that’s in
two pony tails are another part
of the outfit that show her
youth.
The smiling man is covered in a
white powder with a black
under colour. This shows how
his trying to cover his evilness
with the white colour. Him
smiling would make the
audience think that his fun and
nice however the spiked teeth
and his dark eyes show how he
is evil and that the young girls
fate isn’t good.
Location/Lighting:
The movie is set in family home.
This makes the audience think the
little girl is safe as she’s in her
home. The lighting in the house is
however dark which makes the
audience get the feeling a
thriller/horror film should. The
main part of the film are set in the
kitchen which has light colours,
these are however are surrounded
by darkness which create an eerie
feel and make the audience
nervous of something jumping out
at them.
6. The smiling man is a horror and thriller movie. It shows the genre
through the dark colours and convectional use of a young child.
The use of doll parts to hold down the colourful balloons shows
the thriller genre as it creates suspense. The use of lighting for
when the young girl begins to have a first encounter with the man
creates a feeling of fear for the girls safety. The blood on the
kitchen floor creates mystery of who's blood it is and what it
means for the girl. The genre is shown once again once the man
moves and the young girl sees the blood came from her mother
making the audience understand the fate of the young girl.

8. The title sequence consists of a black screen, it then transfers to a black screen with the name of the company that
realises the movie in grey. The screen then goes to black again which is followed by a shot of the upstairs window of
a house. The black and lack of writing creates a sense of suspense for the audience.
9. The credit sequence starts with the
name of the movie. And then it fades to
who it was directed by. Between the
screens it fades to black. The colours
are black and grey showing the
darkness of the movie.
