Little Women Book Vs Movie
What bond is stronger than sisterhood? Although the movie, Little Women, shares many basic
components with the book by Louisa May Alcott, there are still many differences which set them
apart, such as directors choice, dramatic irony, feelings and much more. The director of the movie,
Little Women chose to keep mostly true to the book, while adding some scenes that helped the
movie show more emotions that made it a bit more like the book. For example, in the beginning, of
the movie the director had a scene where Laurie sitting at the window, watching the girls deliver
food to their neighbors, which wasn't a part of the book. I think the director did this because he
wanted us to know that he would be in the movie later on. Although this was a difference, one
similarity was how Jo and Laurie met. In both they met at a party, Laurie was standing behind a
curtain because he was shy, and Jo ended up behind that curtain because she was trying to get away
from a guy that wanted to ask her to dance. I think the director chose to keep this because it shows
that Jo is more of a mischievous person, which is described in the book, but is shown in the movie.
The director did a good job of keeping me just as hooked as I was when I read the book, he stayed
true to the book while adding some of his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A part where the author and director both used dramatic irony was when Laurie and Jo both knew
that John liked Meg and they would talk about it together, I think the director decided to keep this in
the movie because it shows Laurie and Jo's relationship because they are sharing secrets. A part
where it was different was when Laurie called Mrs. March to come home early when Beth was sick,
in the book Mrs. March reached a day after Laurie told the sisters he called their mother, but in the
movie, Mrs. March showed up in a few hours. I think the director decided to change this because he
decreased the passage of time in the

Inside the World of Boys: Behind the Mask of Masculinity by William Pollack
William Pollack, in his article "Inside the World of Boys: Behind the Mask of Masculinity",
discusses on how boy tries to hide behind the mask and the stereotypical of masculinity. He
demonstrates how boy hide their deepest though and feelings and real self. Pollack open the essay
with "a fourteen–year–old boy, he is doing badly in school and he might fail algebra, but when
teacher or his parent ask about it, he said everything is just fine. He hide his true identity behind the
mask, and let no one see his true self." After read the story, I think the story is really useful source to
write an essay about how boy become men and they are emotionless. Pollack is ... Show more

Adam is the boy who he sets the example for The Boy Code and I believe that it is reasonably true
how he states these boys' problems, and their hidden secretes. Many boys this day do not understand
how to express themselves and share their problems. In another word is that they are stressed and
the pressures build up then it will eventually explode like a time bomb. Hiding behind the mask is
basically like acting a scene. When Adam is with his mother he acts different than when he's with
his friends or alone.
Often when boys get hurt, or fail class they will not show them out, they try to hide the emotion
inside them. Over the story, it seems like boy's are fear of what other people think of them and scare
of reject, they carry on their emotion inside, they afraid people around them see their weakness.
These prove why most boys don't cry even though they are hurts. If the boy cry or act their
emotional out then that boy is a sissy. Pollack states, " Men take a whole range of feelings and
emotions and put those behind a mask."(P. 73) These show that boys have to stand on their own two
feet try to be tough and they are a shame to show any emotion. According to Pollack "boys are
shame phobic and "some will even kill to avoid shame". It seems like the society only allows men to
express their emotion only through anger. With many strict conflicting expectations, a

Making Men Chuck Holton Character Analysis
In Making Men, Chuck Holton uses conflict to teach us not to look at people from the outside and,
not to fake being a man. For example, "See the guy with the studded leather vest and the skull–and–
crossbones bandana around his head.". Also, the dad and son wasn't looking at themselves when
they were looking at the other men. Further on all they have to do is worry about themselves and not
the way people are dressed. Clearly the dad is trying to teach his son to be a man. But, in him doing
that, they were pointing the flaws out in people. The dad is doing his job, but he went little too
overboard. Picking out the flaws in everybody else makes you not think about yours and it does
relate to todays teenagers.Picking the flaws caused people

Mud and blood matted his long hair, his unkept beard and the scars gave him a look of menace. A
battered breastplate covered grimy chainmail, the dire wolf of house Stark took pride of place on the
white surcoat. Mud caked greaves over the same grimy mail protected his legs, tatty old leather
boots his feet and a pot helm perched on his head. Despite his appearance, he was an expert at what
he did and that was killing. His greatsword stood nearly as tall as him, but he spun it in deadly arcs
above his head like it was nothing more than a twig. The muscles in his arm bulged as the sword
rose and fell again, men fell as he carved a path forward.
"Push forward, PUSH FORWARD!" He bellowed his voice hoarse from all the smoke. His men
tired and sore from being pushed to near breaking scrambled to fill the gap left by their imposing
leader. The men sunk gratefully to the ground, with the retreat sounded, their leader had ordered
them back to the main encampment for some well earned rest. The leader shrunk to the ground a

Louisa May Alcott Research Paper
Louisa May Alcott portrays aspects of her life within her pieces of work, as well as impacting
advances within society. Two major pieces of her work are Hospital Sketches and her novel Little
Women. Hospital Sketches is slightly fictionalized but is almost entirely based upon Alcott's
experiences as a Civil War nurse. Her encounters as a nurse gave people a true depiction of the
wounded soldiers. Her novel Little Women is based on her life, taking inspiration for her writing
from her childhood memories. Little Women is also seen as an empowering piece of writing. It
encourages women and girls to have a voice.
Louisa May Alcott was born on November 29, 1832, in Germantown, Pennsylvania. At a young age,
Alcott began working to help support her poverty–stricken family. "She had vowed to see to it that
her family would not remain in poverty." (HistoryNet). She would generally work as a domestic
servant or teacher but worked among other jobs as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was seen as an empowerment piece of writing for women's rights. "Jo March was a very flawed,
passionate character who did not always do right. She made lots of mistakes and succeeded and
drove herself and didn't pay attention to the things girls weren't supposed to do." (NPR). The ideals
Jo March followed truly inspired women. The novel was a rare form of literature at the time. It
portrayed women as being strong, independent, and able to accomplish the same things men could.
Little Women helped society to stray from stereotypes of women. "In the time since Little Women
was published in 1868, a countless number of women have – as Alcott put it – "resolved to take fate
by the throat and shake a living out of her." (NPR). Much how her fictional counterpart encouraged
women, Alcott did as well. Alcott was a feminist and fought for women's rights. Alcott also
supported and encouraged women to vote, eventually becoming the first woman to vote in Concord,

Iola Leroy Little Women
On their surfaces, Little Women and Iola Leroy share as many similarities as they do differences.
Both are set during and after the American Civil War, and both detail the lives of women, though the
circumstances of the heroines could scarcely be more different. Little Women's Jo March belongs to
a poor but comfortable white, northern family sympathetic to the Union cause. Iola Leroy, on the
other hand, endures a tumultuous life that takes her from a plantation owner's daughter, to a slave, to
an activist for racial justice. However, despite the obvious dissimilarities, the texts share several
important qualities. Each text espouses a clear moral directive: Little Women preaches the value of
family, hard work, and adherence to Christian principles, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Jo also refuses to marry Laurie because she does not truly love him. Of course, it would be difficult
to argue that Jo's marriage to Laurie would be as disharmonious with the text's moral stance as
Amy's intended betrothal to Fred Vaughn––indeed, it is probable that many readers would have
preferred it over Jo's marriage to Mr. Bhaer. Jo's affection for Laurie is not predicated on his wealth,
and it must be said that the Laurences use their wealth "nobly." However, while we can say that
Laurie does not contradict the novel's moral ideal, Jo's marriage to him would do little to advance it,
particularly if the reader is to accept Mrs. March's assessment that Jo and Laurie would fare poorly
as a couple. Mr. Bhaer, by contrast, aids in Jo's moral development. He dissuades her from writing
sensation stories, likening their publication to the sale of alcohol with the argument that "there is a
demand for whisky, but I think you and I do not care to sell it." (Alcott 280) When Jo protests that
authors of sensation stories are trying to make an honest wage, Mr. Bhaer contends that if the
authors, "knew what harm they did, they would not feel that the living was honest," (Alcott 280)
reiterating the novel's underlying moral directive that wealth should never be a cause to sacrifice
morality, dignity, or happiness. Jo and Mr. Bhaer's marriage signifies Jo's ultimate acceptance of the
lesson her mother set out to teach her, and both their sons and the students at their school guarantee
that the morally improved society resulting from their betrothal will continue into the next

Importance of Beth In the book Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, a girl named Beth plays a
major role in the character's lives. In her lifetime she shows people herself, and her quiet, loving
spirit draws them to her. Beth is used to convey the tender and agreeable side of others, which they
might not have away from her presence. Jo, Beth's older sister, was very moved by Beth and when it
came her time she did not want her to go. She never left Beth's side and was jealous when other
people came to visit her, so when her sister lay dead, "a heavy weight fell on Jo's heart" (425). Jo is
despondent when her sister passes, she even creates a poem of how much she admires her sister and
what she thinks of her. Beth did not just touch Jo's life, she touches an older gentleman's life also. ...

she is selfless, and because of it she becomes very sick and even withholds it from her family. When

the disease. As Beth becomes more and more sick over the years, she learns to accept it, and says to

Jo March said, "I'll try and be what he loves to call me, "a little woman," and not be rough and wild;
but do my duty here instead of wanting to be somewhere else." Josephine 'Jo' March is the central
character in Louisa May Alcott's novel Little Women. Alcott wrote Little Women in 1868, just after
the finish of the Civil War. As Jo comes of age, she learns she can still be adventurous and
independent yet grow up into a little woman. At 15, Jo is a tomboy and loves the outdoors and
literature. She spends her time writing plays for she and her sisters to perform in their Pickwick
Club, along with Laurie, their neighbor. Jo fights growing up and resents being a girl. "I hate to
think I've got to grow up, and be Miss March, and wear long gowns, and look as prim as a China
aster! It's bad enough to be a girl, anyway, when I like boys' games and work and manners! I can't
get over my disappointment in not being a boy; and it's worse than ever now, for I'm dying to go and

Three Sisters Help An Immigrant Family In Little Women
In Alcott's story, "Little Women", three children and their mother help an immigrant family in need.
According to the text, "Fortunately it was early, and they went through back streets, so few people
saw them, and no one laughed at the queer party"(Alcott para 38). The three sisters did not want to
be seen by many people in their town because they did not want people to make fun of them. This
was clearly not very ordinary for the townspeople and so the family worried about being seen.
Based on the text,"They were all unusually hungry, having waited nearly an hour, and for a minute
no one spoke"(Alcott para 33). This shows that the sisters had waited for their mother for a while
and expected her to sit down and eat. The children had to wait

Summary: The Influence Of Race On The Mortality Of Men
As we can see men experience life threatening illnesses that develop with age (Ross, Masters, &
Hummer, 2012). However, research shows that today men are closing the longevity gap and living
just as long as women. Race plays quite a role in the mortality of men. For instance, white men not
having a postgraduate degree greatly effects their life expectancy. A white male without a high
school education lowers his life expectancy by three years (Cockerham, 1982). Black and Hispanic
men who had a college education had better life expectancy than less educated white men and their
colleagues. The mortality rates between blacks and whites is indicated to be approximately 3.8 years
(Firebaugh, Acciai, Noah, Prather, & Nau, 2014). It is unclear as of

Little Women By Louisa Alcott
Little Women by Louisa Alcott
Little Women can be viewed as a classic book or girl's book. It was written after the Civil War after
the author received endless demand from the young female readers. Initially they were published as
two books where Chapters 1 to 23 where issues back in 1868 under Little Women title, however,
after becoming a highly sensational success, Chapters 24 to 47 were published in 1869 under the
title Good Wives Louisa (1869). Louisa May Alcott's personal life is demonstrated in the first book
hence acting as a form of semiautobiographical where it largely reflects on the experiences as she
grows up with her sisters in New England. She was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania on
November 29, 1832 (Reisen). Thus, the book reflects her personal live with the authors demand on
the need to know whether who of the sister married forcing her to add the book. The second book
illustrated how Jo married Laurie with Alcott herself remaining unmarried all her life hence forcing
her to write the sequel by departing from the autobiography by writing may feel straight up fiction.
However, without her personal experiences the other part of the novel may feel less realistic. Little
Women has been largely popular since the initial publication for over 140 years where it largely
appealed to readers young and old, male and female (Myerson). This was based on the major trend
of the novel as based on the lifelong lovers who are female. The novel has been transformed into

Stereotypes In Little Women
Little Women, a novel by Louisa May Alcott, tells the story of the March family who live in New
England during the Civil War. Three of the sisters are typical girls for the time period of the
nineteenth century, doing the cooking, cleaning, and other household chores. In contrast, the
character of Jo wants to spend her time writing and being in adventures outside the home. Jo is
hardworking, brave, and she is also a tomboy. Alcott uses Jo to challenge the stereotypes of the

In the nineteenth century, women were supposed to stay in the home. They were not to be outside
running wild (Radek stereotype). Jo shows more of a masculine personality and one way it is
displayed is through her bravery. Jo seeks adventures especially when she goes outside and plays
Laurie and avoids her domestic responsibilities, which was considered not common in the
nineteenth century. One example of Jo showing her bravery is when Laurie's, Jo's best friend, asks
Jo to come over to his house, to see his library full of books. Laurie claims, that Jo will not come
because being a girl, she would be too afraid to go alone. One of Jo's sisters Meg, tells to Jo that she
can not run over to his house uninvited, walk in and have tea, and she should not be the one to chase
after boys (33). In both situations Jo answers, "I am not afraid of anything" (31). Jo would always
be found outside the house or alone with Laurie. She is never in the house, cooking, cleaning or
helping her mother. This challenges the stereotypes but also shows how brave Jo is. Jo does not like
being in the house; she would rather do what a nineteenth century man would prefer. Another
example of how Jo shows bravery is when she travels to New York by herself. Jo has lot fortitude
and does not have much fear when she travels because see seeks adventure! This is not typical of
women in the nineteenth century. Women had

Isolation In A Little Princess And Children Of Men
Throughout his career, Alfonso Cuarón has proven himself to be a talented and versatile director in
multiple genres. This report will discuss two of Cuarón's works, A Little Princess (1995) and
Children of Men (2006). Released almost a decade apart, the Disney family film and dystopian
drama share many differences but also some important similarities. In particular, the themes of
segregation and isolation play a central role in both films and are both adapted to screen using
similar film techniques such as use of colour and camera angles. Through an analysis of these key
themes, this report will discuss their significance and endurance in Cuarón's wider body of work.
The theme of segregation is prevalent throughout both A Little Princess and Children of Men. In the
former it is most prevalent in the character of Becky, a black servant girl who is forbidden from
speaking to the schoolgirls and is dressed only in rags. Becky's segregation is two–fold as she falls
to the bottom of the social hierarchy in terms of both class and race. Following the
miscommunication of her father's death, Sara was also thrust to the bottom of the social hierarchy, ...

gives dialogue to the underlying tone and feelings of sadness throughout the film. While differing in
many ways, however, the physical separation of Sara and Becky from the schoolgirls parallels the

Gender Stereotypes In Little Bear By Diane Namn
Little bear, little bear, what do you see? I see a feminist children's book opened up for me. Often
some words from children's books get stuck in our head. We all have our favorites that our mom
used to read us when we were younger. Most of the books have a princess getting saved by the
prince or monsters hiding in the main character's closet trying to scare him or her once she falls
asleep. All of our childhood books hold a special place in our hearts but as a child, we would have
never thought there would be any gender stereotypes or inequality between men and women. Most
of the books we read seemed normal to us but as we are studying feminism, one would be surprised
by all of the gender stereotypes found in children's books. Although Little Bear may not be popular
to many, Diane Namn portrays gender stereotypes though illustrations, characters, and the plot.
When talking about the illustrations in the story, Diane Namn is able to show gender stereotypes
through each and every one. One example that stands out from the rest is on page twenty in the

One of the things a person can point out right away is the little cub's clothes; in fact, he is wearing
red. Usually girls wear red and pink because it signifies their gender so when a reader sees that the
little boy was in red, it excludes the opposite gender. Another gender stereotype is the way the little
bear acts. As a child everyone has their days whether one is male or female, but I feel as if little
boys have more of a temper and throw tantrums more than girls. An example of this is shown on
page six where the little bear is hanging on to the shopping cart and is trying to grab something with
the other hand. Therefore, the little boy bear has many characteristics throughout the story that
support the idea that even as children, there are still gender

I sat in a corner of the restaurant, after getting my own sandwich, and pretended to play a game on
my phone. I've found that once someone has their nose buried in a phone, the people around don't
seem to see that person anymore, I think assuming that the phone–user is engrossed and wouldn't
dream of eavesdropping on anyone else.

Leadership Survey
When analyzing the baseline leadership survey for the first cohort, we specifically looked at
baseline frequency distributions of the "I feel like a Leader" scenarios, most Littles reported feeling
more like a leader at home and with friends. On a scale of one to five, one being "Not at all like me"
and five being "A lot like me", many girls indicated that they were less likely to feel like a leader at
school. As seen in table 8 below, 14 percent of Littles reported that they did not feel like a leader at
school, compared to that of 11.6 percent who did. Conversely, 7 percent of Littles reported that they
did not feel like a leader with friends, compared to the 16.3 percent that did. Lastly, when assessing
Littles who felt like a leader at home, 11.6 percent reported that they felt less like a leader, compared
to the 23.3 percent who did.
When analyzing the end of program leadership survey for the first cohort, most Littles reported
feeling more like a leader at home and with friends. As seen in table 9, 16.3 percent of Littles
reported that they did not feel like a leader at school, compared to that of 7 percent who did. On the
other hand, 14 percent of Littles reported that they did not feel like a leader with friends, compared

Character Development in Louisa Alcott's Little Women and Jo's Boys
Many people are and were consumed with the character development in Little Women which was
first published in 1945. A sequel of Little Women is the book Jo's Boys; Alcott's admirers suggested
that she produce a spin–off of her story Little Women. In 1886 Louisa Alcott decided to write Jo's
Boys because her readers wanted to know what happened to all of the little girls that were in Little
Women. For this essay, there will be an observation of the two novels Little Women and Jo's Boys
written by Louisa May Alcott.
Firstly, in chapter 1 of Little Women, Louisa Alcott starts off her novel with the young siblings
discussing how Christmas will not be the same without presents and how they don't think it's fair.
Christmas won't be the same without presents, grumbles Jo, lying on the rug.
It's so dreadful to be poor! Sighed Meg, looking down at her old dress.
I don't think it's fair for some girls to have plenty of pretty things, and other girls nothing at all,
added little Amy, with an injured sniff (http://xroads.virginia.edu/).
In correlation of the novels Little Women and Jo's Boys, Alcott portrays a realistic view of the
young girls discussing how Christmas won't be the same without receiving presents; In Jo's Boys
Mrs. Jo is recalling to Mrs. Meg about the wondrous changes that have occurred throughout the
years. Second, the

Persuasive Essay On A Spider Web
As I left the classroom, I could feel the heat burning on my skin. When I saw the lake, I went
towards the lake for the breeze. The lake itself however smelled like eggs rotting but the cool breeze
was worth smelling the eggs rotting away. The sun was burning and as I sat on the hard rock, I could
feel the heat rising.
The trees were tall and were brown but there was one tree that stood out to me that appeared brown
with a hue of red whose light radiated as the sun hit the tree. The leaves were auburn and forest
green just like all the other trees, but the red tree stood out among all the others. Being unique can
be difficult since we are constantly told to stand out and find our own way, but our own way is then
judged by others. Society claims that no one here is to judge but we all know the statement is
inaccurate. Judgement is in the human nature and we cannot do anything to change it. Rather, we
just need to accept people for who they are and be willing to be open to their own opinions and
ideas.
Rock near me had a spider web with leaves entrapped but no spider was present but he left his work
behind. The spider may or may not be alive but he will be remembered for the spider web. Anyone
who would notice the spider web will realize that a spider made it and will either sit away from the
web knowing there is a spider nearby or take time and embrace the beauty of life and realize how
unique and intricate each spider web is. There will be men and women in our lives who

Masculinity And Its Effect On Society
These claims by culture and feminism do not match up with the definition of manliness, and that is
where the debate lies. If the discrepancy was due to the researchers Mansfield and Gilmore, what
are they to make of their observations and study? What are we to do with centuries of history in
which humans lived with men at the helm because they were needed? How are we to explain the
unconscious feeling that a man is doing right when he works to provide for his family? How can we
explain the opposite feeling when a man does not? The argument that is not being made on the
manliness side is that men should be the only ones in government or in business or that misogyny
plays any role at all. They are not arguing for a return of the patriarchy, but they are arguing for a
return of true manliness.
It is here that we find the real problem of men today. In a culture that ignores true masculinity and a
society that has no need for men to follow a code, manliness has become something of the past.
Recalling the illustration of Tahiti, men today have a 'Tahiti mindset.' There is no longer any need
for men to protect, provide and procreate due to the expansion of technology and culture. There is
little to compel men to follow manly principles thus they simply choose not to. Jack Donovan puts it
this way: "For what may be the first time in history, the average guy can afford to be careless" (188).
Men can afford to opt–out of contributing to society because there are little to no

Little Talks By Of Monsters And Men Poem Analysis
When songs are written, there is often some deeper meaning hidden within the various pieces.
Hearing a song may not make this apparent, but by listening to the lyrics and/or instrumentation
individually, the true meaning can be realized. For example, in the song Little Talks by Of Monsters
and Men, the writers convey deep meaning through their choice of lyrics. The actual
instrumentation and rhythm of the song keeps it sounding lighthearted. It is only when the listener
separates the song from the lyrics that this particular song's significance is discovered; mourning the
loss of a loved one. The choice of the writers and vocalists of this song, Nanna Bryndís
Hilmarsdóttir and Ragnar Þórhallsson, to sing the piece as a duet leads the listener to infer that the
song is a conversation between two individuals. The song begins with Hilmarsdóttir lamenting the

Þórhallsson, presumably someone close to Hilmarsdóttir, responds to her lamentations with
reassurance. All the while throughout the first stanza of the duet, the instrumentation is sparse and
quiet. This however changes in the break between this stanza and the next, making it easier for the
listener to miss something important in verse one. The lyrics, when analyzed alludes to the fact that
she knows something that the listener does not yet know and may be missed because the listener is
distracted by the sudden shift in tone. In chorus one, both voices come together to say "though the
truth may vary, this ship will carry our bodies safe to shore" (Hilmarsdóttir & Þórhallsson 8–9). The
writers have been known to explain their choice of wording in their songs as something left up to

Stephanie Foote's Little Women
Louisa May Alcott's Little Women is a realistic coming of age story. Although considered a novel of
realism, critics today are still debating over the theme of gender roles. One critic, Elizabeth
Thomason, praises the novel for challenging assumptions on gender roles while another critic,
Stephanie Foote, criticizes Little Women for the heavily domestic depiction of womanhood. Little
Women focuses on several characters who possess qualities that stand in stark contrast to characters
of other mid–nineteenth century novels. For example, Jo March dreams of being able "to support
[her]self and help the girls," illustrating her desire to support the family although this task was
reserved for men (Alcott 278). She displays her eagerness to be independent ... Show more content

She believes the novel "tells its readers that women must not...act on negative emotions" (Foote 2).
However, it is evident that multiple scenes of the novel contradict Foote's claim and instead
showcase how Alcott challenges assumptions on gender roles. For instance, Marmee March stresses
that it is "better to be happy old maids than unhappy wives" (Alcott 171). By advising her daughters
that they should not feel obligated to find husbands, but should seek fulfillment on their own,
Marmee emphasizes that a home can be run successfully without a man supporting it. Here, it is
evident that Marmee displays her frustration towards society's limited role of women. Unlike
Foote's claim, it is clear that Marmee "acted on negative emotions" towards the designated roles of
women. In addition, Alcott's stance on gender roles is apparent through Meg March's refusal to
perform her expected gender roles. Meg laments that she is "too used up to exert [her]self for
anyone" and is tired of being subservient to her husband John Brooke (Alcott 486). Her attitude
clearly discredits Foote because she is capable of displaying her distress and does not let her gender
limit her voice. Although Stephanie Foote asserts that the novel stressed the restrictions of women,
the novel actually does the exact opposite; Alcott displays that women

Relationship Between Rochester And Jane Eyre
Not only do her thoughts betray her independent spirit, but so too do her actions and words. Her
relationship with Mr. Rochester is heavily defined by her brash actions and opinionated answers.
Mr. Rochester, a typical Victorian male, exudes superiority even when he professes his love to Jane,
sending out subtle hints about how she should act and live while planning the wedding. In many of
the conversations between Mr. Rochester and Jane, Jane opens up more than is socially acceptable,
proving herself to be just as fierce in her opinions as her employer. In one conversation, she tells Mr.
Rochester, "It is my spirit that addresses your spirit...equal–as we are" (Brontë 296). She establishes
herself as an equal in her relationship with Mr. Rochester before she even accepts his proposal.
Similarly, Jane's relationship with her cousin St. John is riddled with her independent spirit. Jane
refuses to marry St. John when his ideas of love clash heavily with her own, verbally scorning his
love and his impassionate proposal. She explains to Mr. Rochester that St. John, "is good and great,
but severe; and for me, cold as an iceberg. He is not like you, sir; I am not happy at his side" (Brontë
514). Doing so jeopardizes her chances of a good home and financial stability, but she refuses to
compromise her own convictions and happiness even for the sake of comfort. As much as Jane is
independent and plain spoken, Blanche clings to traditional views, though she seems independent

Little Men By Louisa May Alcott
Louisa May Alcott is the author of many novels written back in the nineteenth century. Her most
successful books, and the books she is most known for is the "Little Women Series". These books
consist of: "Little Women", "Little Men", and "Jo's boys". In these books Alcott shows the same
writing style and each of the different books share the same theme and ideas. In Alcott's book "Little
Men", (one of the three in the Little Women series) the theme is that nothing is impossible. This
theme is supported by three points in the novel. These points are that anything is possible even
though you come from different backgrounds which is portrayed through the character Dan, nothing

compared to the other children at Plumfield. Even though Dan disobeys the rules most of the time,
and gets some of the boy's at Plumfield hurt, it was still possible for him to control his behavior and
become a successful young man. At the end of the book Alcott writes how the most successful

entitled "Thanksgiving", Alcott writes, "Dan is one who can serve well if the wages are love and
confidence, and he has the energy to carve out his own future in his own way." (377). Dan came to
Plumfield as a hopeless (but doable) experiment who broke the rules and introduced poker,
drinking, and smoking to a group of boys at Plumfield. Even though Dan was a big handful Jo never
gave up on Dan because she saw past the rough outer layer and saw that all that he need was a little
bit of love and trust. Dan later on in the novel grew up to become a remarkable person and is now
proof at Plumfield that nothing is impossible even if you come from a

How the Family Roles Changed in Canadian Culture during...
The 1920s was a changing time in Canadian culture and this affected everyone. The most effect
could be felt on the family, and how responsibilities, duties and roles had changed. Men were
coming home from the war, they had now seen things never thought possible and experienced things
that will forever change them; they came home different. Women were at home waiting, excited,
ready to move on and build to their families and continue their lives. Young girls were excited to
have their father's home, to tuck them in at night and to sit next to their fathers at church on Sunday
mornings. And then there were the boys. Boys lives changed dramatically around the time of the
war. This became a crucial issue for both families and societies. A lot of time, money, and education
was spent on the 'crisis' of boys and their development. The development of boys was altered by the
war and can be seen in their relationships with their mothers, the toys and activities that were
available to boy's, and the advertisements that surround boys clothing during this era.
Mother Blaming:
While the men were away at war mothers took on the responsibility of raising the children. In the
beginning nobody found this to be wrong as it was seen as motherly duty, but later the crisis began
to evolve and mothers were being blamed. Mothers were being blamed for smothering and babying
boys which caused feminization in these boys from a young age. Mothers were seen as the reason
boys were to become sissies.

The Differences Between Opinions Of Tougher Guise Essay
The leading point central on the difference between opinions of Tough Guise are that forcefulness in
America is overpoweringly a gendered occurrence and that any effort to comprehend violence
consequently involves that we realize its link to traditional codes and beliefs of courage and
manhood (Kataz, 5). Over the year's media images has played a major role in many individuals'
behavior changed established on his or her beliefs, also on how someone thinks and acts found off
on what individuals see (Kataz, 5). One the foremost point of this documentary is that regardless of
widespread change of violence in American culture, it's very encouraging that violence can be
stopped. Violent masculinity is no more "natural" than media imagery. Together depend on
organized routines. The assumption of this documentary amount to this: By identifying, and
categorizing, masculinity which is a process, a painful repetitive built on elimination and watching,
we may be able to begin to learn how to break free with the narrowing problems of masculinity.
Tough Guise efficiently looks at those relationships between pop–cultural imagery and the social
development of mascot characters in what are to come for U.S. encountered with urban decay
because of the process of social changes in the government which is a concept better known as
deindustrialization (Kataz, 1). Manhood is made, not given – as opposed to one's natural gender; A

Masculinity In William Golding's Lord Of The Flies
"Maybe there is a beast... maybe it's only us." (Golding). This line comes from the book Lord of The
Flies a book about a group of boys stranded trying to create a colony, and all of the troubles they
face. A number of the troubles they actually face come from their own doing, arising because of the
way that they learned to behave very "masculinely." The boys are all trying to appear dominant and
repress their emotions so they don't look weak or feminine to the other boys, much like how men in
today's culture try to do. So, what would happen if boys were brought up in a more supportive and
less harsh culture? Would men appear more communicative and open to their emotions, or would
they stay the same? Boys and men growing and maturing in today's society should not be pressured
into suppressing emotions and killing all semi–feminine parts about themselves.
When men and boys are trying to show no emotion and appear dominant to their peers, nobody
wins. Men are taught this from a young age, to grow up and be a "Man". Which in society's terms
means to have anger issues, treat women as an inferior, and to be over controlling of everything.
That kind of toxic masculinity is a reason for many troubles in a multitude of peoples lives. "Little
boys and Little girls start off emotionally equal...both boys and girls are like a stereotypical girl."
Society influences the way our boys behave. All though some boys may still behave this way; as a
result of them just having a personality

Little Women And The Civil War
Little Women and the Civil War.
The Civil War served as much more than the fight for civil economies and a struggle to end slavery.
What lied in the foreground of the civil war are images of unions and confederate soldiers
rummaging through forest of the American South and thoughts of slaves gaining their long sought
freedom.
However most people do not consider the lingering backdrop of the war. That would be the effects
the war would have on the changing gender roles. The new gender roles formed during the civil war
before we can determine the gender roles in the socially crucial time in American History, first we
should define what is meant by "gender". Context of gender is more than just physical being.
Gender can be considered more abstract. This being said gender should be considered a
preconceived notion about how each of the two sexes should act or interact. An identity is likely
exemplified by this following quote from the mid 1800's. "Their (the Grimke' sisters') antislavery
speaking tour of the North encountered bitter criticism and resistance from men who charged that
they had overstepped the boundaries of their appointed sphere." (Elizabeth)
In the decades before the civil war it was entirely common for society and women themselves to
assign a more subordinate role to women. Women cooked cleaned, nurtured and everything society
deemed fit. The civil war however shaped women up to be much more than that. The civil war was
not the first time we had seen women

Benefits Of Equal Pay For Women
Over time there have been many discriminations against age, race, gender, religion, and ethnicity.
An ongoing struggle for women that are as equally qualified as men is getting paid less. It is
estimated that women are paid twenty percent less compared to their male colleagues. Women have
been trying to change these statistics for many years. If women got paid the same as men, it could
help benefit the economy, yet females with more education lose money due to the gender pay gap.
The biological differences between men and women are inevitable, but there is no reason why a
woman should be underpaid for the same amount or quality of work as a man.
There are a few factors as to why there is a gender pay gap today. This is because it did not originate

However, women do not have the option of just being a stay at home mom in this day in time. Many
families rely on a woman's income for more than just extra money to be financially stable. The
Americas Quarterly says, "Despite increasing labor force participation– nearly 70 million additional
women have entered the labor force since 1980– economic outcomes in Latin America and the
Caribbean continue to favor men" (Berger 77). This means that recently more women are joining the
workforce even though men still get higher wages. Families that are completely maintained by
women have increased over the past fifty years. Women need the equal pay because often times
their income is a necessity. One scenario is, single mothers get paid less than single fathers and this
makes it difficult for single mothers to provide for their family.
Some companies and employs believe that women do not need equal pay, because often times their
hours will be different with them being a caregiver of the family. Women who are mothers often
times get paid less and is a big part of the pay gap. Women also receive less from social security and
in most cases they receive less employer provided health care. Often times women have to take off
work to take care of children. Even though women should not have paid family leave, or paid sick
days they should still get paid the same for the hours

Characterization skills
The literary work of Louisa May Alcott is world renowned, and familiar to most readers. Perhaps
her most famous work is Little Women, which is why I selected this book for further
characterization of Louisa May Alcott in Murder by the Book. Little Women gives prime examples
of Louisa's writing voice, and a loose biography of her life. This work gave the opportunity to
compare Jo, Louisa May Alcott, and the Raven Society member. Louisa May Alcott's simplistic
script proved valuable in advanced characterization for Murder by the Book. Louisa May Alcott had
a traditional writing style. She composed balanced, intricate sentences, without making them
difficult to understand, all the while keeping Little Women warm and cheerful. Louisa inserted
relatively advanced vocabulary into her writing, such as: rankled, gesticulate, and bereavement.
Dialogue fills the majority of Little Women, which makes the reader desire to continue. The entire
book has an affectionate, family centered tone, which reveals Louisa's kind nature. I gleaned more
about Louisa May Alcott than I expected from her writing. I deducted that Little Women is roughly
based on Louisa's life, and family. She was remarkably bright, had a profound love for literature,

Death Quotes In Little Women
In the novel, Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott, death is a recurring figure throughout it. Her
death in this novel affects the meaning of the work as a whole, and contributes to the whole meaning
of the book. She is shown as shy and gentle in this book, and she stays that way throughout. She is
an example to her sisters and mother by the way she handles things and is easy tempered. Beth is
shown as a shy, innocent girl in the novel. She is the third oldest out of the four sisters. She loves to
stay at home, care for her sisters and mom, and just be joyful all of the time. She has a very loving
personality, and is depicted as a sacrificial character for a certain reason. When Beth was caring for
the Hummel family, she caught scarlett fever. As the years pass, she grows weaker physically, but
stronger mentally. This shows that she is a very strong willed girl, and she doesn't give up. In the
novel, Beth had been sick for a long while from the scarlett fever. Finally, her face became pale, and
she fell to an everlasting sleep with her mother and Jo in the room. She was in her late teens or early

Little Women Book Vs Movie

  • 1. Little Women Book Vs Movie What bond is stronger than sisterhood? Although the movie, Little Women, shares many basic components with the book by Louisa May Alcott, there are still many differences which set them apart, such as directors choice, dramatic irony, feelings and much more. The director of the movie, Little Women chose to keep mostly true to the book, while adding some scenes that helped the movie show more emotions that made it a bit more like the book. For example, in the beginning, of the movie the director had a scene where Laurie sitting at the window, watching the girls deliver food to their neighbors, which wasn't a part of the book. I think the director did this because he wanted us to know that he would be in the movie later on. Although this was a difference, one similarity was how Jo and Laurie met. In both they met at a party, Laurie was standing behind a curtain because he was shy, and Jo ended up behind that curtain because she was trying to get away from a guy that wanted to ask her to dance. I think the director chose to keep this because it shows that Jo is more of a mischievous person, which is described in the book, but is shown in the movie. The director did a good job of keeping me just as hooked as I was when I read the book, he stayed true to the book while adding some of his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A part where the author and director both used dramatic irony was when Laurie and Jo both knew that John liked Meg and they would talk about it together, I think the director decided to keep this in the movie because it shows Laurie and Jo's relationship because they are sharing secrets. A part where it was different was when Laurie called Mrs. March to come home early when Beth was sick, in the book Mrs. March reached a day after Laurie told the sisters he called their mother, but in the movie, Mrs. March showed up in a few hours. I think the director decided to change this because he decreased the passage of time in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Inside the World of Boys: Behind the Mask of Masculinity... Inside the World of Boys: Behind the Mask of Masculinity by William Pollack William Pollack, in his article "Inside the World of Boys: Behind the Mask of Masculinity", discusses on how boy tries to hide behind the mask and the stereotypical of masculinity. He demonstrates how boy hide their deepest though and feelings and real self. Pollack open the essay with "a fourteen–year–old boy, he is doing badly in school and he might fail algebra, but when teacher or his parent ask about it, he said everything is just fine. He hide his true identity behind the mask, and let no one see his true self." After read the story, I think the story is really useful source to write an essay about how boy become men and they are emotionless. Pollack is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Adam is the boy who he sets the example for The Boy Code and I believe that it is reasonably true how he states these boys' problems, and their hidden secretes. Many boys this day do not understand how to express themselves and share their problems. In another word is that they are stressed and the pressures build up then it will eventually explode like a time bomb. Hiding behind the mask is basically like acting a scene. When Adam is with his mother he acts different than when he's with his friends or alone. Often when boys get hurt, or fail class they will not show them out, they try to hide the emotion inside them. Over the story, it seems like boy's are fear of what other people think of them and scare of reject, they carry on their emotion inside, they afraid people around them see their weakness. These prove why most boys don't cry even though they are hurts. If the boy cry or act their emotional out then that boy is a sissy. Pollack states, " Men take a whole range of feelings and emotions and put those behind a mask."(P. 73) These show that boys have to stand on their own two feet try to be tough and they are a shame to show any emotion. According to Pollack "boys are shame phobic and "some will even kill to avoid shame". It seems like the society only allows men to express their emotion only through anger. • 3. Making Men Chuck Holton Character Analysis In Making Men, Chuck Holton uses conflict to teach us not to look at people from the outside and, not to fake being a man. For example, "See the guy with the studded leather vest and the skull–and– crossbones bandana around his head.". Also, the dad and son wasn't looking at themselves when they were looking at the other men. Further on all they have to do is worry about themselves and not the way people are dressed. Clearly the dad is trying to teach his son to be a man. But, in him doing that, they were pointing the flaws out in people. The dad is doing his job, but he went little too overboard. Picking out the flaws in everybody else makes you not think about yours and it does relate to todays teenagers.Picking the flaws caused people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. All Quiet On The Western Front: A Short Story Creative Writing Mud and blood matted his long hair, his unkept beard and the scars gave him a look of menace. A battered breastplate covered grimy chainmail, the dire wolf of house Stark took pride of place on the white surcoat. Mud caked greaves over the same grimy mail protected his legs, tatty old leather boots his feet and a pot helm perched on his head. Despite his appearance, he was an expert at what he did and that was killing. His greatsword stood nearly as tall as him, but he spun it in deadly arcs above his head like it was nothing more than a twig. The muscles in his arm bulged as the sword rose and fell again, men fell as he carved a path forward. "Push forward, PUSH FORWARD!" He bellowed his voice hoarse from all the smoke. His men tired and sore from being pushed to near breaking scrambled to fill the gap left by their imposing leader. The men sunk gratefully to the ground, with the retreat sounded, their leader had ordered them back to the main encampment for some well earned rest. • 5. Louisa May Alcott Research Paper Louisa May Alcott portrays aspects of her life within her pieces of work, as well as impacting advances within society. Two major pieces of her work are Hospital Sketches and her novel Little Women. Hospital Sketches is slightly fictionalized but is almost entirely based upon Alcott's experiences as a Civil War nurse. Her encounters as a nurse gave people a true depiction of the wounded soldiers. Her novel Little Women is based on her life, taking inspiration for her writing from her childhood memories. Little Women is also seen as an empowering piece of writing. It encourages women and girls to have a voice. Louisa May Alcott was born on November 29, 1832, in Germantown, Pennsylvania. At a young age, Alcott began working to help support her poverty–stricken family. "She had vowed to see to it that her family would not remain in poverty." (HistoryNet). She would generally work as a domestic servant or teacher but worked among other jobs as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was seen as an empowerment piece of writing for women's rights. "Jo March was a very flawed, passionate character who did not always do right. She made lots of mistakes and succeeded and drove herself and didn't pay attention to the things girls weren't supposed to do." (NPR). The ideals Jo March followed truly inspired women. The novel was a rare form of literature at the time. It portrayed women as being strong, independent, and able to accomplish the same things men could. Little Women helped society to stray from stereotypes of women. "In the time since Little Women was published in 1868, a countless number of women have – as Alcott put it – "resolved to take fate by the throat and shake a living out of her." (NPR). Much how her fictional counterpart encouraged women, Alcott did as well. Alcott was a feminist and fought for women's rights. • 6. Iola Leroy Little Women On their surfaces, Little Women and Iola Leroy share as many similarities as they do differences. Both are set during and after the American Civil War, and both detail the lives of women, though the circumstances of the heroines could scarcely be more different. Little Women's Jo March belongs to a poor but comfortable white, northern family sympathetic to the Union cause. Iola Leroy, on the other hand, endures a tumultuous life that takes her from a plantation owner's daughter, to a slave, to an activist for racial justice. However, despite the obvious dissimilarities, the texts share several important qualities. Each text espouses a clear moral directive: Little Women preaches the value of family, hard work, and adherence to Christian principles, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jo also refuses to marry Laurie because she does not truly love him. Of course, it would be difficult to argue that Jo's marriage to Laurie would be as disharmonious with the text's moral stance as Amy's intended betrothal to Fred Vaughn––indeed, it is probable that many readers would have preferred it over Jo's marriage to Mr. Bhaer. Jo's affection for Laurie is not predicated on his wealth, and it must be said that the Laurences use their wealth "nobly." However, while we can say that Laurie does not contradict the novel's moral ideal, Jo's marriage to him would do little to advance it, particularly if the reader is to accept Mrs. March's assessment that Jo and Laurie would fare poorly as a couple. Mr. Bhaer, by contrast, aids in Jo's moral development. He dissuades her from writing sensation stories, likening their publication to the sale of alcohol with the argument that "there is a demand for whisky, but I think you and I do not care to sell it." (Alcott 280) When Jo protests that authors of sensation stories are trying to make an honest wage, Mr. Bhaer contends that if the authors, "knew what harm they did, they would not feel that the living was honest," (Alcott 280) reiterating the novel's underlying moral directive that wealth should never be a cause to sacrifice morality, dignity, or happiness. Jo and Mr. Bhaer's marriage signifies Jo's ultimate acceptance of the lesson her mother set out to teach her, and both their sons and the students at their school guarantee that the morally improved society resulting from their betrothal will continue into the next ... Their younger sister Beth is a shy, sweet natured girl who loves music; and their youngest sister Amy is an artistic girl who only wants to climb higher. Now tell me, how can a story about these four girls maturing into wonderful women be challenged or banned? Louisa May Alcott's Little Women is by far the best novel about growing up I have ever read in my entire years of existence. In her lifetime she shows people herself, and her quiet, loving spirit draws them to her. Beth is used to convey the tender and agreeable side of others, which they might not have away from her presence. Jo, Beth's older sister, was very moved by Beth and when it came her time she did not want her to go. She never left Beth's side and was jealous when other people came to visit her, so when her sister lay dead, "a heavy weight fell on Jo's heart" (425). • 10. Jo March Jo March said, "I'll try and be what he loves to call me, "a little woman," and not be rough and wild; but do my duty here instead of wanting to be somewhere else." Josephine 'Jo' March is the central character in Louisa May Alcott's novel Little Women. Alcott wrote Little Women in 1868, just after the finish of the Civil War. As Jo comes of age, she learns she can still be adventurous and independent yet grow up into a little woman. At 15, Jo is a tomboy and loves the outdoors and literature. She spends her time writing plays for she and her sisters to perform in their Pickwick Club, along with Laurie, their neighbor. Jo fights growing up and resents being a girl. "I hate to think I've got to grow up, and be Miss March, and wear long gowns, and look as prim as a China aster! It's bad enough to be a girl, anyway, when I like boys' games and work and manners! I can't get over my disappointment in not being a boy; and it's worse than ever now, for I'm dying to go and fight with Papa, and I can only stay at home and knit, like a poky old woman!" According to the text, "Fortunately it was early, and they went through back streets, so few people saw them, and no one laughed at the queer party"(Alcott para 38). The three sisters did not want to be seen by many people in their town because they did not want people to make fun of them. This was clearly not very ordinary for the townspeople and so the family worried about being seen. For instance, white men not having a postgraduate degree greatly effects their life expectancy. A white male without a high school education lowers his life expectancy by three years (Cockerham, 1982). Black and Hispanic men who had a college education had better life expectancy than less educated white men and their colleagues. Jo shows more of a masculine personality and one way it is displayed is through her bravery. Jo seeks adventures especially when she goes outside and plays Laurie and avoids her domestic responsibilities, which was considered not common in the nineteenth century. One example of Jo showing her bravery is when Laurie's, Jo's best friend, asks Jo to come over to his house, to see his library full of books. Laurie claims, that Jo will not come because being a girl, she would be too afraid to go alone. One of Jo's sisters Meg, tells to Jo that she can not run over to his house uninvited, walk in and have tea, and she should not be the one to chase after boys (33). In both situations Jo answers, "I am not afraid of anything" (31). Jo would always be found outside the house or alone with Laurie. She is never in the house, cooking, cleaning or helping her mother. This challenges the stereotypes but also shows how brave Jo is. Jo does not like being in the house; she would rather do what a nineteenth century man would prefer. This report will discuss two of Cuarón's works, A Little Princess (1995) and Children of Men (2006). Released almost a decade apart, the Disney family film and dystopian drama share many differences but also some important similarities. In particular, the themes of segregation and isolation play a central role in both films and are both adapted to screen using similar film techniques such as use of colour and camera angles. Through an analysis of these key themes, this report will discuss their significance and endurance in Cuarón's wider body of work. The theme of segregation is prevalent throughout both A Little Princess and Children of Men. In the former it is most prevalent in the character of Becky, a black servant girl who is forbidden from speaking to the schoolgirls and is dressed only in rags. • 18. Gender Stereotypes In Little Bear By Diane Namn Little bear, little bear, what do you see? I see a feminist children's book opened up for me. Often some words from children's books get stuck in our head. We all have our favorites that our mom used to read us when we were younger. Most of the books have a princess getting saved by the prince or monsters hiding in the main character's closet trying to scare him or her once she falls asleep. All of our childhood books hold a special place in our hearts but as a child, we would have never thought there would be any gender stereotypes or inequality between men and women. Most of the books we read seemed normal to us but as we are studying feminism, one would be surprised by all of the gender stereotypes found in children's books. Although Little Bear may not be popular to many, Diane Namn portrays gender stereotypes though illustrations, characters, and the plot. When talking about the illustrations in the story, Diane Namn is able to show gender stereotypes through each and every one. One example that stands out from the rest is on page twenty in the book. As a child everyone has their days whether one is male or female, but I feel as if little boys have more of a temper and throw tantrums more than girls. Ellison 30 November 2016 Character Development in Louisa Alcott's Little Women and Jo's Boys Many people are and were consumed with the character development in Little Women which was first published in 1945. A sequel of Little Women is the book Jo's Boys; Alcott's admirers suggested that she produce a spin–off of her story Little Women. In 1886 Louisa Alcott decided to write Jo's Boys because her readers wanted to know what happened to all of the little girls that were in Little Women. For this essay, there will be an observation of the two novels Little Women and Jo's Boys written by Louisa May Alcott. Firstly, in chapter 1 of Little Women, Louisa Alcott starts off her novel with the young siblings discussing how Christmas will not be the same without presents and how they don't think it's fair. Christmas won't be the same without presents, grumbles Jo, lying on the rug. It's so dreadful to be poor! Sighed Meg, looking down at her old dress. I don't think it's fair for some girls to have plenty of pretty things, and other girls nothing at all, added little Amy, with an injured sniff (http://xroads.virginia.edu/). In correlation of the novels Little Women and Jo's Boys, Alcott portrays a realistic view of the young girls discussing how Christmas won't be the same without receiving presents; In Jo's Boys Mrs. Jo is recalling to Mrs. Meg about the wondrous changes that have occurred throughout the years. The lake itself however smelled like eggs rotting but the cool breeze was worth smelling the eggs rotting away. The sun was burning and as I sat on the hard rock, I could feel the heat rising. The trees were tall and were brown but there was one tree that stood out to me that appeared brown with a hue of red whose light radiated as the sun hit the tree. The leaves were auburn and forest green just like all the other trees, but the red tree stood out among all the others. Being unique can be difficult since we are constantly told to stand out and find our own way, but our own way is then judged by others. Society claims that no one here is to judge but we all know the statement is inaccurate. Judgement is in the human nature and we cannot do anything to change it. Rather, we just need to accept people for who they are and be willing to be open to their own opinions and ideas. • 25. Masculinity And Its Effect On Society These claims by culture and feminism do not match up with the definition of manliness, and that is where the debate lies. If the discrepancy was due to the researchers Mansfield and Gilmore, what are they to make of their observations and study? What are we to do with centuries of history in which humans lived with men at the helm because they were needed? How are we to explain the unconscious feeling that a man is doing right when he works to provide for his family? How can we explain the opposite feeling when a man does not? The argument that is not being made on the manliness side is that men should be the only ones in government or in business or that misogyny plays any role at all. They are not arguing for a return of the patriarchy, but they are arguing for a return of true manliness. It is here that we find the real problem of men today. In a culture that ignores true masculinity and a society that has no need for men to follow a code, manliness has become something of the past. Recalling the illustration of Tahiti, men today have a 'Tahiti mindset.' There is no longer any need for men to protect, provide and procreate due to the expansion of technology and culture. There is little to compel men to follow manly principles thus they simply choose not to. Hearing a song may not make this apparent, but by listening to the lyrics and/or instrumentation individually, the true meaning can be realized. For example, in the song Little Talks by Of Monsters and Men, the writers convey deep meaning through their choice of lyrics. The actual instrumentation and rhythm of the song keeps it sounding lighthearted. It is only when the listener separates the song from the lyrics that this particular song's significance is discovered; mourning the loss of a loved one. The choice of the writers and vocalists of this song, Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir and Ragnar Þórhallsson, to sing the piece as a duet leads the listener to infer that the song is a conversation between two individuals. Although considered a novel of realism, critics today are still debating over the theme of gender roles. One critic, Elizabeth Thomason, praises the novel for challenging assumptions on gender roles while another critic, Stephanie Foote, criticizes Little Women for the heavily domestic depiction of womanhood. Little Women focuses on several characters who possess qualities that stand in stark contrast to characters of other mid–nineteenth century novels. However, it is evident that multiple scenes of the novel contradict Foote's claim and instead showcase how Alcott challenges assumptions on gender roles. For instance, Marmee March stresses that it is "better to be happy old maids than unhappy wives" (Alcott 171). By advising her daughters that they should not feel obligated to find husbands, but should seek fulfillment on their own, Marmee emphasizes that a home can be run successfully without a man supporting it. Here, it is evident that Marmee displays her frustration towards society's limited role of women. Unlike Foote's claim, it is clear that Marmee "acted on negative emotions" towards the designated roles of women. In addition, Alcott's stance on gender roles is apparent through Meg March's refusal to perform her expected gender roles. Meg laments that she is "too used up to exert [her]self for anyone" and is tired of being subservient to her husband John Brooke (Alcott 486). Her attitude clearly discredits Foote because she is capable of displaying her distress and does not let her gender limit her voice. The most effect could be felt on the family, and how responsibilities, duties and roles had changed. Men were coming home from the war, they had now seen things never thought possible and experienced things that will forever change them; they came home different. Women were at home waiting, excited, ready to move on and build to their families and continue their lives. Young girls were excited to have their father's home, to tuck them in at night and to sit next to their fathers at church on Sunday mornings. And then there were the boys. Boys lives changed dramatically around the time of the war. This became a crucial issue for both families and societies. A lot of time, money, and education was spent on the 'crisis' of boys and their development. The development of boys was altered by the war and can be seen in their relationships with their mothers, the toys and activities that were available to boy's, and the advertisements that surround boys clothing during this era. Samuel's hair snapped back against the rush of wind while he felt the spring of fear and excitement run up through his rectum and into the pit of his stomach–and he knew, the chase was on. The blur, the streaking frenzy of visuals colliding, as he crashed down the hall with panic, with desperation. Escape. Just get away–he's got to get away. Blitzing forth with hate in each step. • 35. Masculinity In William Golding's Lord Of The Flies "Maybe there is a beast... maybe it's only us." (Golding). This line comes from the book Lord of The Flies a book about a group of boys stranded trying to create a colony, and all of the troubles they face. A number of the troubles they actually face come from their own doing, arising because of the way that they learned to behave very "masculinely." The boys are all trying to appear dominant and repress their emotions so they don't look weak or feminine to the other boys, much like how men in today's culture try to do. So, what would happen if boys were brought up in a more supportive and less harsh culture? Would men appear more communicative and open to their emotions, or would they stay the same? Boys and men growing and maturing in today's society should not be pressured into suppressing emotions and killing all semi–feminine parts about themselves. When men and boys are trying to show no emotion and appear dominant to their peers, nobody wins. Men are taught this from a young age, to grow up and be a "Man". Which in society's terms means to have anger issues, treat women as an inferior, and to be over controlling of everything. That kind of toxic masculinity is a reason for many troubles in a multitude of peoples lives. "Little boys and Little girls start off emotionally equal...both boys and girls are like a stereotypical girl." Society influences the way our boys behave. All though some boys may still behave this way; as a result of them just having a personality ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Little Women And The Civil War Little Women and the Civil War. The Civil War served as much more than the fight for civil economies and a struggle to end slavery. What lied in the foreground of the civil war are images of unions and confederate soldiers rummaging through forest of the American South and thoughts of slaves gaining their long sought freedom. However most people do not consider the lingering backdrop of the war. That would be the effects the war would have on the changing gender roles. The new gender roles formed during the civil war before we can determine the gender roles in the socially crucial time in American History, first we should define what is meant by "gender". Context of gender is more than just physical being. Gender can be considered more abstract. This being said gender should be considered a preconceived notion about how each of the two sexes should act or interact. An identity is likely exemplified by this following quote from the mid 1800's. "Their (the Grimke' sisters') antislavery speaking tour of the North encountered bitter criticism and resistance from men who charged that they had overstepped the boundaries of their appointed sphere." (Elizabeth) In the decades before the civil war it was entirely common for society and women themselves to assign a more subordinate role to women. Women cooked cleaned, nurtured and everything society deemed fit. The civil war however shaped women up to be much more than that. The civil war was not the first time we had seen women ... • 37. Benefits Of Equal Pay For Women Over time there have been many discriminations against age, race, gender, religion, and ethnicity. An ongoing struggle for women that are as equally qualified as men is getting paid less. It is estimated that women are paid twenty percent less compared to their male colleagues. Women have been trying to change these statistics for many years. If women got paid the same as men, it could help benefit the economy, yet females with more education lose money due to the gender pay gap. The biological differences between men and women are inevitable, but there is no reason why a woman should be underpaid for the same amount or quality of work as a man. There are a few factors as to why there is a gender pay gap today. This is because it did not originate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, women do not have the option of just being a stay at home mom in this day in time. Many families rely on a woman's income for more than just extra money to be financially stable. The Americas Quarterly says, "Despite increasing labor force participation– nearly 70 million additional women have entered the labor force since 1980– economic outcomes in Latin America and the Caribbean continue to favor men" (Berger 77). This means that recently more women are joining the workforce even though men still get higher wages. Families that are completely maintained by women have increased over the past fifty years. Women need the equal pay because often times their income is a necessity. One scenario is, single mothers get paid less than single fathers and this makes it difficult for single mothers to provide for their family. Some companies and employs believe that women do not need equal pay, because often times their hours will be different with them being a caregiver of the family. Women who are mothers often times get paid less and is a big part of the pay gap. Women also receive less from social security and in most cases they receive less employer provided health care. Often times women have to take off work to take care of children. Even though women should not have paid family leave, or paid sick days they should still get paid the same for the hours ...
