Early Asian Art Research Paper
After reading about Early Asian Art and the Art of the Americas, I chose to write about the
Terracotta Army and the Colossal Heads. The Terracotta Army is an underground army with 8,000
soldiers and 100 horses made out of clay. The warriors was very appealing to me, because there are
thousands of life size warriors and it is amazing how each warrior face and expression differ from
one another. The soldiers are utilitarian because they were made to protect Shi Huangdi throughout

the clay. The legs, torsos, fingers, arms and heads of the soldiers were molded and then carved into

My Cultural Identity Essay
How can my cultural identity be described? Honestly, I don't really know, but I have been thinking
about it ever since we learned about it in English last week. I don't really want to limit myself to
what I should be seen as, because culture is dynamic. I don't want everyone to remember me by how
I was in the past, but by how I am today. People can change, and I know this because I am one of
those people. I used to be shy around everyone who wasn't my family in the past, but now I am only
shy around those I don't really know. My cultural identity is best described by the activities I
participate in, like celebrating July 4, going to Chinese school, drawing, and writing. These are the
things that I would rather be seen doing than how I look physically and how I act, since, to me,
those elements don't really describe me fully, unlike the activities that I participate in. One element
of my cultural identity can be shown through me speaking Chinese, participating in Chinese New
Year, and going to Chinese school. I am not really close with my parents or my grandparents.
However, I am close to my cousin from my mom's side and her mom. That is probably because I
was raised by them, not my parents. Although I am not really close to my parents, I still do the
things they tell me to do since I am grateful that I was born into this world and have a place to live
with food to eat. When they ask me to translate, I have to speak Chinese to them. However, I don't
really know how, so they

Asian American Experience Through Art
The Asian American Experience Explained Through Art Introduction The United States is the "land
of the free, and the home of the brave" according to the song, but there is a dichotomy that exists
between those who have called the United States their home for a long period of time, and those
who are immigrating to the US. Asian Americans are a group that very few think of as having
difficulties because the stereotype is of a group that is intelligent and is actually doing better than the
average American. While this may seem to be true, better grades in a school setting does not mean
that people who come from other countries are not experiencing racism (both overt and subtle),
stereotyping and alienation in this country. Although there has been some difficulty, many groups
are experiencing newfound hope because of the actions that they are taking. The plight, and the hope
of the Asian cultures are being documented by artists of different stripes who are eager to depict
what has happened to Asians as they try to build their own America, and assimilate into the one that
was built before they came. In this paper, the Asian American cultures will be examined through the
art that has been produced over the many years that Asian people have striven to make their way as
new Americans. Searching for an Identity Leaving one's own country and moving to another is one
of the most difficult journeys anyone can make. In one's home country, he or she has a place, an

Symbolic Ethnicity Essay
"Symbolic ethnicity" is a term coined by Herbert Gans. It refers to ethnicity that is individualistic in
nature and without real social cost for the individual. These symbolic identifications are essentially
leisure time activities, rooted in nuclear family traditions reinforced by voluntary enjoyable aspects
of being ethnic (Gans 424–429). "Symbolic ethnicity" is practiced and enjoyed by white Americans.
It is a way for descendants of white Europeans to learn about and be proud of their heritage. That is
not the case for non–whites who are grouped together by the white majority making ethnic identity
difficult . This type of ethnicity is rooted in immigrants of European descent. It could be the Feast of
Saint Anthony or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This creates a situation where Caribbean blacks who are steeped in heritage are typically unable to
partake in their own ethnic celebrations like their white counterparts. When Caribbean blacks arrive
in America, they attempt to distance themselves from the American black (Ogbu, J.U. 425–429).
When a black group attempts to celebrate its heritage, other groups march in order to disrupt these
types of celebrations. Every time a black organization wants to march or celebrate, the KKK or
other white supremacist group alternatively marches to cause conflict. When this type of celebration
does take place, it is typically limited locally to black neighborhoods with no media coverage.
Asians are treated in a similar fashion being grouped together as one nation. There are Chinese,
Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean and Cambodian to name a few. These people when assimilated into
American culture become one group, Asian, which in many cases offers no opportunity to express
their own national heritage or culture in America. Grouping of these minorities puts all blacks
whether American or otherwise and Asians under the same umbrella and therefore dealing with the
same stereotypes. These images

Essay On Asian American Education
Asian Americans view education as essential to improving their lives and securing their children's
financial success (Kim, 1993). They view education as the only viable pathway to achieve upward
mobility because they perceive limitations in non–educational pursuits (Sue and Okazaki, 1990).
This notion is reflected in educational statistics, as Asian Americans are considered the fastest–
growing, college–going racial group in the nation (Teranishi et al., 2004). Despite valuing education,
however, many Asian Americans do not pursue a career in education, and one of the factors
contributing to the lack of Asian American teachers in K–12 education is intense pressure from
parents. In a pilot study done by Chang (2007), 18 first–generation Asian ... Show more content on

When Chang (2007) specifically asked the undergraduates majoring in the natural sciences/math if
they would choose a social/behavioral science major, such as teaching, if it paid more, surprisingly
almost all these students replied in the negative. Upon further investigation, these Asian American
students revealed other factors, "such as family expectations" as a source of influence (Chang, 2007,
p. 7). Chinese tradition deems teaching a highly respectable job, but Asian parents living in the
United States do not view teaching in the United States with the same respect. Gordon (2000) found
that these parents did not see teaching as a secure profession, equating teachers' income with poverty
even though teachers receive tenure benefits. Kim's (1993) study further supports Gordon's (2000)
findings on how respect for elders can have a constraining effect if it influences Asian American
students' career choices, emphasizing the elevation of one's family status at the expense of
individual job satisfaction–a value in a collectivistic cultural frame of

Asian-American Analysis Paper
Asian–American Analysis A minority is any category of people distinguished by physical or cultural
differences that a society sets apart and subordinates. There are many different minorities in the
world, each one with their own belief, language, and custom. Each one trying to gain respect, be
treated equally and not as a minority. Minority is a social term that was created to separate and put
constraints on a person's equality. Asian–Americans for instance have been coined as the "model
minority", but even the model minority has complaints about the way the system is set up to
represent them as American citizens ("Model Minority" 2015). All Asian–Americans came to the

The more Asian cultures mix with America them more we take from the culture, such as
Chinatowns, Chinese food, Vietnamese food, religion, fight styles, etc. We have not just taken from
their cultures, but we have also added to theirs by assimilating them into our daily lives and
providing different currencies and school programs along with an entirely different government
system. Each culture brings something to the table. Asian–Americans have introduced three
different cooking styles to the U.S., southwest, northeast, and southeast. According to Asian Nation,
each cooking comes from different parts of Asia. Southwest cooking comes from India, Pakistan, Sri
Lanka, etc. This kind of cooking usually consists of flat bread, kebabs, and the use of strong spices.
Unlike Southwest cooking, Northeast traditional cooking styles come from China, Korea, and Japan.
The tradition in the cooking is to use fats and oils to emphasize sauces in their cooking. Foods from
these places are connected to their religion Hinduism and can be used as medicine for good health,
and longevity. Southeast cooking comes from Thailand, Viet Nam, Singapore, etc. Featured dishes
in this culture are lightly prepared and aromatic, such as stir–fry, steaming, and foods with lots of
herbs (Purpose of This Site). Besides food, Asian–Americans have provided new fighting styles,
such as martial arts and much more. Bruce Lee was a famous Asian–American who brought martial
arts to the movies, and made it mainstream for movies. One of the stereotypes that came from this
was that all Asians knew martial arts, but of course, not every Asian knew martial arts. People for
some reason generalize people into the same category just based on race or ethnicity believing that if

Asian Stereotypes: Underrepresented In Media
Media underrepresentation and representation is a major source for stereotypes. How Asians are
portrayed in media is one source for the prejudice that Asians are geeky and nerdy friends; they are
mostly casted as extras and minor roles, and few Asian actors have played a lead role. Yellowfacing
also contributes to embedding stereotypes about Asians in others starting from a young age. Some
stereotypes that branch out from media are: Everyone knows Martial Arts Asian men are Emasculine
Submissive Asian women Books are also a form of media. Pierre Loti's novel was greatly popular
during the author's lifetime. It remains in print as a classic Western literature. It also served as a

descent: George Takei who plays Hosato Cary–Hiroyuki Tagawa who plays Hashi Ghost in the Shell

choice. Although the majority of the cast is Asian, the main character is not. Instead of casting an
Asian actress, like Lucie Liu, to take on the role as Major (Motoko Kusanagi), they casted Scarlett
Johansson. Many fans speculate why the studio did not pick an ethnically appropriate lead

Americans have stereotypes and labels placed on Asians and Asian–Americans. This is also true vice
versa. Most stereotypes originate from media. In Hollywood, Asians are usually portrayed as the
nerdy or geeky friends. They are also mostly casted as minor roles like being extras. Asians are also
underrepresented in media, like Hollywood. Even in movies that are of Asian origin, there are very
little Asians who are part of the main cast. For example, in Kubo and the Two Strings, there is only
one Asian cast member in the movie that places in ancient Japan. There is also the upcoming movie

Representation Of Asian Americans In The 21st Century
The Asian American community undergoes a vicious cycle; Being erroneously presented in media,
theatre, and other performance arts, which have thus racialized and stereotyped nearly the entirety of
the community. With media and art representation being key to shaping the way that minorities are
perceived in the 21st century, many are conditioned into believing false pretenses of the Asian
American population after nearly a century of marginalization and racial misrepresentation. They
are, at best, viewed as dignitaries. A people who are hard working, intelligent, and referred to as "the
model minority." At worst, they are cutthroat social climbers. Wing Young Huie expands on these
stereotypes in his book Looking for Asian America: An Ethnocentric Tour, stating that "the more
successful they are, the more threatening they are as the Yellow Peril." (Huie 2004). Such a narrative
completely strips members of the community of their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Art Museum When I Was At The Asian Museum
I was at the Asian Art Museum when I was facing in front of me Maternal Caress (Caresse
Maternelle) by Mary Stevenson Cassatt. Though displayed in the special exhibit Looking East How
Japan Inspired Monet, Van Gogh, And Other Western Artists, the artwork was originally made in
Paris and decades later found itself as a collection for the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Mary
Stevenson Cassatt (1844 1926) was an American impressionist painter who, similarly to the most
privileged artists of her generation (Henry James condescendingly called them the "White
Marmorean Flock"), traveled to Europe in the late 1860s to pursue artistic training. She eventually
moved permanently with her sister, Lydia and her parents to Paris where there were less institutional
modes of oppression and more access to the contemporary world at the time of painting. With time,
her oeuvre now famously known for her portrayals of mothers and children was recognized by her
contemporaries, and she started to partake in the Impressionists' Parisian exhibition from 1876
onwards. It is important to recognize, however, that this was fathomable for Cassatt because she was
a white woman of upper
middle class and as Chadwick blatantly states, "Impressionism was equally
an expression of the bourgeois family as a defense against the threat of rapid urbanization and rapid
industrialization..." (232). Caresse Maternelle was made in 1902, which is to say, at the turn of the
century. To place this artwork in

Chinatown In America
Vibrant and culturally rich, Chinatown is the center of Asian–American social and economic
activity. It is a place where visitors can dabble and have a glimpse of Asian tradition, heritage, and
culture – be it through food, literature, art, or entertainment. Whether in New York, San Francisco,
Seattle, or Philadelphia, the lively neighborhood offers diverse, rich, and meaningful cultural
experience to new and familiar faces. While some may recognize this neighborhood as a place to
grab dim sum, karaoke, or buy arts and craft, the creation of Chinatown is much more complicated –
and dark. Racial discrimination is and remains to be a significant makeup of the American
landscape; this essay will examine the anti–Asian sentiments associated with the origins of
America's oldest and most historic Chinatown located in San Francisco. In addition, this essay will
describe the current challenges faced by San Francisco's Chinese community from the city's
politicians and residents.
The California Gold Rush and the development of the First Transcontinental Railroad, both of which
occurred during the mid–nineteenth century, marked a wave of the Chinese immigration to the US.
Crossing over to the West where rumors of gold laid, caught the interest of many Chinese people.
Common to many, majority of Asian immigrants sought prosperity and fortune during a time of
economic stagnation and political strife at home. The Burlingame Treaty, signed in 1868,

Research On Asian American Identity Essay
Sitting in a circle, most of those who were staring at me also looked like me – black hair, squinted
eyes, and yellow skin. Not twenty minutes ago, I paced around the heart of a predominantly white
college campus. Now, I was introducing myself to the members of Asian Students United (ASU).
While I was never a part of ASU, I asked one of the organization's executive board (eboard)
members – Tien, who happened to a Facebook friend – if I could attend a couple of their meetings to
conduct research on Asian American identity. He delightfully agreed. After all, from an outsider
perspective, I would fit right in. At these meetings, I participated in many of their activities, which
included making a quilt and participating in discussions. Yet, I was always observant and somewhat
detached because this was all new to me, making me an observer–participant. This allowed me to
observe a range of details; however, because I was so new, such details may have been unimportant
to those whom I studied. On the other hand, my Vietnamese church was all too familiar. As a full
participant in the church and a former participant in Youth for Christ (YFC), I was pressed to
critically observe and dissect these interactions. While I still asked the group leader for a chance to
observe YFC meetings, data from this second site may be more biased toward the way I have known
people in this institution from prior years. As a tradeoff, though, being a participant–observer may

the meaning of Dhammapada and its influence In the last two weeks we have read all the chapters in

favorite. This chapter deals with the problem of lasting happiness. The Buddha tells us how we can
attain the so–called inner joy in this chapter. Since all people want to live in joy, it is very helpful in
our daily life. 1. Interpretation of the chapter: We live in joy because we do not hate those who hate

Their mind will never be pure and peace. So the next thing that comes to my mind is that how we
can overcome this selfish desire. My answer is that we have to know what is really important to us,
what is our goal of life. In other words we should know what deserve to be pursuit and we may find
our answer through "meditation". Actually these questions are really hard to answer and any
misunderstanding may lead us back to selfish. For example some people want to pursuit success, but
how can we measure success? Some may go back and say that a rich man or who has an admiring
job can be called successful. It is totally wrong and shortsighted. If you hold such idea, you still
cannot avoid those negative thoughts like greed and fear. So it is of vital importance to figure out
what you really want and what can bring you last happiness. Different people may get different
answers and once you find it you have acquire the highest wisdom. You will know whether you are
in the right track and you will pay all your effort to achieve it. You know your are approaching your
goal day by day. Thus our mind will become pure and peace instead of being affected by others'
view. Last but not least, the Buddha also mentions the problem concerning what kind of person we
should make friends with. According to the Buddha, we should make friends with the wise. In my
understanding, a good friend is that who will help us to improve ourselves. They always support us

The Importance Of Asian Art
Art is a way for the Asian artist to express their feelings with the viewers. The Asian culture uses art
to convey the connection between people and nature in the form of brush painting and Japanese
wood block printing. For instances, the Japanese wood block printing, The Great Wave created by
Hokusai shows a large wave heading towards two boats. The artist leaves the art frozen, allowing
the viewer to depict their own ending to the scenario. Art in the Asian–American culture

For example, the artwork Bare Willows painted by Ma Yuan embodies the essences of Taoism by
integrating natures Yin and Yang. In result, Yuan creates a spacious and mysterious painting in a
timely manner. Yuan represents Yin as the mountain and Yang as the water. The message Yuan
conveys in this painting is that the mountain is unmoving and the water is easily disruptive. The
artistry in China begins to evolve once the Han reclaim the throne. With the start of the Ming
dynasty, the Chinese community becomes fill with joy and prosperity, leading to the introduction of
color and mythology. Asian artists paint the images of nature to convey the lessons of eloquence,
fragmentation, and precision.
Japanese wood block printing became the most popular form of art during the Edo period. Japanese

Asian American Role as Stereotypes
Asian American Role as Stereotypes
In David Henry's movie depicts how Asian Americans are stereotyped in the media and movies.
During the movie a Caucasian fools a director in audition and pretends to be a stereotyped Asian
American. "Yellow Face" is an Asian American movie that explains how Asians are used in mass
media. In doing so I would begin to explain how much negative effect it will be on society. I will
use four to five articles in my essay to show what roles Asian Americans get in the Hollywood
movies. In general Asian Americans students are most academic achievers but when it comes to act
in movies they are stereotyped and their English accent is used as foreign accent even thorough they
are born American. I will give all the information that is used in media about Asian Americans. In
the movie when a Caucasian movie star lies to be an Asian American. When the director know about
that he is lying he is not an Asian he a Caucasian they start fighting and for the race. But he becomes
a famous star in movies later on. After a while the director heard that his friend who is the Caucasian
star's girlfriend. He meets her and explains her and says, "I think he make you fool do you know he

The Forms Of Art : The Art Of Asian Art
"What is Asian Art?" I repeatedly ask myself that, but still struggle to come up with a definition.
Historical Asian arts carved its way into the modern world with its deep history that indicates how
their objects or artifacts led to what they have in common. The process of creating an Asian Art can
take up to years, but the end product is definitely worth it. Although it was difficult to find the right
tools back then, they still found ways to create these types of arts which is why it is deeply
appreciated for its beauty. Asian arts based on its modern discovery were created for the same
purpose, but illustrated in its own unique form of style.
To begin with, one of the reason why Asian Art came together was due to religion because it plays a
huge role in their culture. However, not all Asian nations have the same beliefs and religion. Even
though they may come from one origin, they are transformed to their own unique form in their
respective Asian nation. For example, Buddhism is a very common religion throughout Asian
countries. I have seen so many different forms and style of Buddha yet most of them are consistent
with the same features, such as elongated ears, hand gestures (Abhrya, Varada, Vitarka, Dharma–
Chakra, and Dhyana.Mudra), and flowy clothes. Even with the same religion, all beliefs towards
Buddha is different and varies with location or geography. "Buddha Maitreya (Mile fo)" is a Buddha

The next corridor was an exhibit of ceramics of everyday life in the Neolithic period of the
Majlayao culture (Machong phase, CA 2300–2000BC Metropolitan Museum plaque). The pottery of
this period expresses similarities in the color and shapes to the art found amongst the indigenous
cultures elsewhere in the world. On the side was another room with two guardian lions (6th dynasty
220–589). Lion statues were status symbols for great dwellings that were placed outside of main
entranceways to promote good and to stop evil from entering in (Feng Shui, Lam 38). In the room at
the Museum they guard lacquer images and woodcarvings of Buddhas. Buddha images executed in
dry lacquer were highly valued by the Chinese because of the costly time–consuming process
required to produce them (Metropolitan Museum wall–plaque). Possibly the lions do serve a
purpose here: to prevent any evil beings from entering a room filled with prized lacquer Buddhas.
The Han dynasty (25–220 CE) exhibit outside in the corridor demonstrated remarkable uniformity.
Common pottery such as models of houses and farm structures, were created as funerary objects for

Migration On A Global Scale
Within the last few decades, there has been a great influx of Asians who have migrated to the United
States. In 1985, Asian immigrants made up less than half of the total immigrant population, many of
which have settled in New York City and California. The "selective phenomenon" known as
migration has been impelled by the "demographic, economic, social and psychological attributes" of
the location (Desbarats 305). Migration on a global scale is influenced by factors such as available
alternatives to those considering the move, how much distance is covered, ways of transportation
and the state policies, both complex and restrictive, that oversee who enters and leaves.

Occupation became the driving force for some; the numbers of professional immigration, however,
were lower than compared to other Asians. Unlike the low rate of workers, there is an "increasing
number of Thai youngsters, in keeping with the national tradition of openness to Western
influences" (Desbarats 306). It was believed that education through the United States would lead to
professional success. Student visas were only obtained if the student had financial support as well as
the incentive to go back to Thailand "usually in the form of financial ties with their home country"
(Desbarats 307). Many immigrants found themselves burdened by the conditions of living in the
states. The financial and psychological struggles were not worth it when immigrants were risking to
"construct networks, maintain homeland ties and, ensure that remittances reach families left behind"
(Barkan 19). Immigrants who stay in the states try to balance assimilation to the dominant American
culture while still want to feel a sense of their homeland. They try to make a connection whether it
be through food, familiar neighbors or the knowledge of language and dance which gets lost in the
later generations. The "primary contact with American culture" happens through interaction with
their American peers (Tangsujjapoj 3). Social participation is what breaks the way for acculturation
of immigrants because it aids them in establishing their own identity

that this percentage live mostly on the west and east coasts of mainland United States and Hawaii;

wrong word to the bemusement of the film watchers. The broken English that is used by the Asian
characters in this film seem to heighten or display the fact that the Asian characters have visible
flaws. The Americans never have to display such flaws, in fact the only part of the movie where an
American attempts to spoke Japanese it is completely flawless, without hesitation or pause.
A further stereotype that is used in this film is that Asian people make good managers, but are never
good leaders. What this tells use is that while a person of Asian descent might know the best
possible way to accomplish a goal they will never have the force or strong enough personality to get
others to get the goal accomplished. The film has Asian men taking over an American plant and

The Properties Of Globalization As A Classless Society
borders become porous, and information, money, and people flow relatively freely from one
community to another. The complex social processes of globalization do not only operate on a
surface level. Rather, globalization produces different results in the everyday lives of students living
in Southern California as well as indigenous Guatemalan tribes. "Glocal", the property of being both
global and local, characterizes my own life quite clearly. Properties of globalization are particularly
apparent in the way I perceive my own identity, as a Chinese–American women.
In Ireland, residents of Myross are negatively represented in the media. Even though Ireland is said
to be a classless society according to social commentators such as David McWilliams, the
percentage of working poor is steadily increasing. Overgeneralization of Myross inhabitants keeps
the residents stuck in their current socio–economic level. In the case of the Irish residents, social
inequality was maintained, in part, through the media, by vilifying welfare recipients and
maintaining an inaccurate portrayal of social mobility. Thanks to stigmatization in the media, locals
experience unequal treatment in obtaining mortgages and insurance, poor self esteem, and fewer job
opportunities. In one specific account, a teenager expressed that, in order to be successful, she had to
change her accent as to not be identified. (Wassenberg 2004)
Similarly, Asians experience their own form of misrepresentation in Western

Asian American Stereotype
For over a hundred years, stereotypes of Asian Americans have dramatically changed from being
viewed as uneducated poor laborers to being characterized as successful educated minority. It has
changed from negativity to positivity. According to the article "Outwhiting the whites": An
examination of the persistence of Asian Americans model minority discourse, Asian Americans were
stereotyped as the "Yellow Peril" before. It was a fear that Asian Americans were going to take
power in America. Japanese Americans had lost a lot during World War II. They were imprisoned in
internment camps, lost their homes, land, and property. After the World War II, people started to

The second article I read was, The new whiz kids by Brand, D. According to the article, Asian
Americans have set a standard for Americans on education. A researcher at the U.S. Department of
Education found that Asian Americans spend more time on their homework, take more advanced
classes, and graduate with more credits than other students. They are known to be high achievers.
The stereotype of Asian Americans as the model minority group is not true. It is simply because they
work harder. Because of their cultural background and how they were raised, they are really focused
on their education. They view education as the key to success. "It's a matter of dedication, family
support and discipline," says Julliard President Joseph Polisi. He believes that Asians are not
naturally talented but because of their hard work, they are able to be successful in what they are
doing. Asian American children are greatly influenced by their parents to study hard and get a good
degree because the advantage the American educational system has in store for them. Asian
American parents expect a lot of educational success from their children because of the sacrifice
they have to make for their children to be successful in the future. Because of what they have been

Asian American Stereotypes
America consists of a melting pot when it comes to races and cultures. However, society tends to
fall back onto stereotypes to distinguish each racial community. In the case of the Asian community,
there are a vast number of common stereotypes that are used to label Asians. For example, one
common stereotype is Asians who are foreigners. There are countless Asian people who have
resided in the United States for all of their lives, yet Asian Americans are often seen as perpetual
foreigners. This kind of representation disregards the fact that America is home to generations of
Asian Americans who have also been a part of building America from the ground up. This
stereotype is frequently mirrored in film and television with Asian characters who

Asian Stereotypes In Lady And The Tramp
Not your Stereotypical Asian Everyone has a stereotype, whether its your race, gender, religion, etc.
According to stereotypes, reinforced by T.V, media, and Hollywood films Asian Americans are

grammar and pronunciation, and piano or cello playing math geniuses. Asian stereotypes so
common that they often go unnoticed. Asian stereotypes are everywhere in film and in real life. An
example in a movie is Lady and the Tramp. In the film, there are two Siamese cats named Si and Am
they are animated to be Asian. They have overly slanted eyes, thick Asian accents, and they are
sneaky and influential. Si and Am are the malicious villains in the movie. Asians are stereotyped to

A stereotypical Asian women are seen as submissive or a dragon lady, who uses their looks to gain

Asian women are seen as attractive since they are associated with geishas, who were traditional
Japanese woman whose job was to entertain men with singing and dancing, but after 21 they are
considered too old and many of them turned to prostitution. Overall that is the origin of why Asian
women are perceived as a dragon ladies and submissive women. Asian men on the other hand

Stereotypes Of Asian Stereotypes
It was the first day of YMCA Summer Camp, and I hardly knew anyone there. I spun in circles
trying to find at least one familiar face at camp. After ten minutes of looking, I almost gave up, but
then I saw Layth. I quickly approached him and told him I was glad to see him since I did not know
anyone else there. Layth has attended the camp in the last two years, so he knew a lot of people that
were there. He introduced me to the other kids at camp. After the introductions, they would
immediately ask me if I was Chinese or if I was from China. I replied, "I am Vietnamese. Not all
Asians are Chinese". At this moment, I realized that no matter where I go or who I meet, I will
always be overshadowed by the Asian stereotypes. When you hear someone bring up an Asian
person, an image of a short, yellow person who probably cannot drive and eats dogs and cats come
to mind. Asians are also thought to make straight A's in school, have karate in their genes, and are
from China. According to Heidi Burgess, "Stereotypes (or "characterizations") are generalizations or
assumptions that people make about the characteristics of all members of a group, based on an
image (often wrong) about what people in that group are like". As an Asian teen living in the United
States, I hear too many jokes relating to these Asian stereotypes that are just plain out overused and
not true. Asians are always assumed to be bad drivers because they can not see due to their small

Asian Art Museum in San Francisco
During the first week of September, I made a trip with a friend to the Asian Art Museum in San
Francisco. Every first Sunday of the month, admission into the museum is free. It is my first time to
visit there and I was most impressed with the huge number of Buddhas on display. Most of the
pieces are in excellent condition. It is amazing 600–year–old pottery and all these stone statues of
Buddha that looks like it was made yesterday. What really brings this place to life for me are the
brilliant combination of social mixers and live performance events mixed with cultural education.

Moreover, with origins in Pakistan, it is no wonder that their regional depiction of Maitreya is much
different than the Chinese Buddhist images I'm used to. Over the centuries, two main branches of
Buddhism emerged: a transmission that traveled to Southeast Asia, and a transmission that evolved
in East Asia.
1. Theravada Buddhism
Theravada is believed to be the oldest form of Buddhism. The term itself comes into use later, but
the Theravada tradition upholds the monastic path and adheres to the oldest surviving recorded
sayings of the Buddha, collectively called the Pali canon. These original texts were set down in the
Pali language by monks in Sri Lanka in the first century ce. Prior to this codification, teachings had
been transmitted orally, and concern arose that original texts must be preserved in light of the
growing heterodoxy that was developing in India. Theravada recognizes the primacy and humanity
of the historical Buddha. The Buddha was an exemplary figure. Enlightenment is an arduous task,
available only to monks who explicitly pursue the path of Shakyamuni himself. Theravada is the
dominant form of Buddhism today in Sri Lanka as well as Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Laos, and
Cambodia. The subject matter of Buddhist art from these traditions focuses on life events of the
Buddha.
2. Mahayana Buddhism

Some stereotypes about Asians include: being academically gifted in school particularly in math,
knowledgeable in martial arts, bad drivers, eating dogs, and having slanted eyes. Some of the more
good stereotypes include being academically intelligent and perhaps knowledgeable in the martial
arts. Granted not all Asians know martial arts and not every Asian person I know has an A in every
class, it is due to the harsh punishments children would endure should they obtain a bad, or even
mediocre grade since parents and teachers could sometimes physically beat children for not
fulfilling their academic expectations. For martial arts, perhaps it was a sport as well as a defensive
mechanism for all of the wars especially in China and Vietnam, as

The South Asian Collection Of The Asian Art Museum
The South Asian collection of The Asian Art Museum, in gallery four, houses The Hindu Deity
Brahmani [Figure 1], originally from Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu state and is dated approximately
875–950 AD. The artist is unknown. Her dimensions are 29 X 21 X 10 inches. In Hinduism,
Brahmani is the shakti of the god Brahma, the creator of the universe and senior member of the
Hindu Trinity, and is one of the seven mother–goddesses that may have been located in the temple
of her origin ("The Hindu Deity Brahmani"). The sculpture was created during the Chola Dynasty,
also known as the Golden Age of Tamil Culture, and carved from either granite or hornfels granite.
The Dravidian style of art and architecture attained brilliance under the Cholas, and the dynasty's
triumphs are considered the greatest in South Asia containing some of the most beautiful
masterpieces ever produced in India (Dehejia, 1990). This sculpture is an excellent representation of
this goddess, confirming that the artistic vision of the Chola dynasty is paramount in Indian art.
Equally as stunning, ornate temples were built to house sacred symbols to help Hindu devotees
comprehend the incomprehensible. The temple is considered the dwelling place of the deities and
sculptures of Hindu gods set there is a visual representation used to generate a sense of reality of the
invisible. The temples provided a space for worshippers to perform rituals, leave offerings, touch,

was the accusation he made. Vincent was a young man who was about to get married in a few weeks
before he was murdered. His father was a Chinese immigrant who worked hard and owned laundry
mats, and later served in the military for his citizenship and was later able to bring his wife and
adopted son, Vincent, to the free land (Yung). Hung Liu worked hard with extensive research to find
that her fellow Chinese people who had been living in America before her had owned many laundry
mats and were very involved in the laundry business. When asked by a college in South Carolina to
create a piece for them, she designed clothing and had her family create them and this piece later
turned into a memorial for the laundry businesses in the South (Riechart).

The Importance Of Artistic Appropriation
When it comes to appropriation in artistic practices, I feel as though there are two defining lines or
codes of ethics that relate to the topic in a creative context and with a cultural context – artistic
appropriation, the topic of artistic freedom in practices that reference or borrow existing elements of
other work, and cultural appropriation, the issue which spans between being 'inspired' by other
cultural groups to potential exploitation, a lack of representation to a caricaturistic type of racism.
The two types of appropriation are complex, controversial, and often come together to form two
sides of the same argument – do we have the right to borrow and if so, from whom and how?
For artistic appropriation, I believe it's okay to appropriate or take elements from other work as long
as one edits the content both physically and contextually and as long as one cites their original
sources.
For cultural appropriation: I generally believe minority voices should tell their own stories but
regardless, one should do their research and appropriate in a way that is authentic, accurate, and
doesn't project stereotypes or other harmful and derogatory content.
By Evelyn McDonnell's definition in, "Never Mind the Bollocks: Shepard Fairey's Fight for
Appropriation, Fair Use, and Free Culture," appropriation is "a cultural form of explicitly borrowing
from another as a means of commenting and paying tribute," (180) – the intentional act of taking to
create or generate new meaning.

The Stereotypes Of Asian American Media
In today's mainstream media, there exists a visible lack of Asian American representation. When
they are given roles in film and television, those roles often maintain the stereotypical ideology
which has been dominant for decades. Asian American stereotypes in these media range from hard–
working and servile to masters of the martial arts and often put forth a misguided or exaggerated
impression of what Asian Americans are like as a group. I argue that these stereotypical
representations of Asian Americans manifest themselves in viewers' minds and affect the way they
view the minority group far after the they power off their television sets. These stereotypes are
challenged when individual Asian Americans emerge and do not fit the mold that Hollywood has
created for them. The quotes "looking at independent media artifacts, we can see the difficulties of
self–representation, the potential for changing and configuring problematic images from Asian
American and the media"(Ono) gives us a understanding to what independent media is to Asian
Americans. Along with the quote "Inspires the creative expression of "Asian Americans who have
felt excluded by particular forms of racialization"(Ono). These quotes will illustrate the shifting
paradigm within the media from mainstream media to independent self produced work becoming
the norm and how it can change Asian American lives demonstrated in these two films

how often they think about race, how they see themselves in the "social hierarchy" of races (versus

In Shortcomings, the scene where Ben and Alice go to meet Alice's parents at a church stood out to

Early Asian Art Research Paper

  • 1. Early Asian Art Research Paper After reading about Early Asian Art and the Art of the Americas, I chose to write about the Terracotta Army and the Colossal Heads. The Terracotta Army is an underground army with 8,000 soldiers and 100 horses made out of clay. The warriors was very appealing to me, because there are thousands of life size warriors and it is amazing how each warrior face and expression differ from one another. The soldiers are utilitarian because they were made to protect Shi Huangdi throughout eternity. The process of making the soldiers involved 1,000 skillful potters, who molded and carved the clay. The legs, torsos, fingers, arms and heads of the soldiers were molded and then carved into the figures. After the clay was fired, the warriors were painted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. My Cultural Identity Essay How can my cultural identity be described? Honestly, I don't really know, but I have been thinking about it ever since we learned about it in English last week. I don't really want to limit myself to what I should be seen as, because culture is dynamic. I don't want everyone to remember me by how I was in the past, but by how I am today. People can change, and I know this because I am one of those people. I used to be shy around everyone who wasn't my family in the past, but now I am only shy around those I don't really know. My cultural identity is best described by the activities I participate in, like celebrating July 4, going to Chinese school, drawing, and writing. These are the things that I would rather be seen doing than how I look physically and how I act, since, to me, those elements don't really describe me fully, unlike the activities that I participate in. One element of my cultural identity can be shown through me speaking Chinese, participating in Chinese New Year, and going to Chinese school. I am not really close with my parents or my grandparents. However, I am close to my cousin from my mom's side and her mom. That is probably because I was raised by them, not my parents. Although I am not really close to my parents, I still do the things they tell me to do since I am grateful that I was born into this world and have a place to live with food to eat. When they ask me to translate, I have to speak Chinese to them. However, I don't really know how, so they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Asian American Experience Through Art The Asian American Experience Explained Through Art Introduction The United States is the "land of the free, and the home of the brave" according to the song, but there is a dichotomy that exists between those who have called the United States their home for a long period of time, and those who are immigrating to the US. Asian Americans are a group that very few think of as having difficulties because the stereotype is of a group that is intelligent and is actually doing better than the average American. While this may seem to be true, better grades in a school setting does not mean that people who come from other countries are not experiencing racism (both overt and subtle), stereotyping and alienation in this country. Although there has been some difficulty, many groups are experiencing newfound hope because of the actions that they are taking. The plight, and the hope of the Asian cultures are being documented by artists of different stripes who are eager to depict what has happened to Asians as they try to build their own America, and assimilate into the one that was built before they came. In this paper, the Asian American cultures will be examined through the art that has been produced over the many years that Asian people have striven to make their way as new Americans. Searching for an Identity Leaving one's own country and moving to another is one of the most difficult journeys anyone can make. In one's home country, he or she has a place, an identity that is ... • 7. Symbolic Ethnicity Essay "Symbolic ethnicity" is a term coined by Herbert Gans. It refers to ethnicity that is individualistic in nature and without real social cost for the individual. These symbolic identifications are essentially leisure time activities, rooted in nuclear family traditions reinforced by voluntary enjoyable aspects of being ethnic (Gans 424–429). "Symbolic ethnicity" is practiced and enjoyed by white Americans. It is a way for descendants of white Europeans to learn about and be proud of their heritage. That is not the case for non–whites who are grouped together by the white majority making ethnic identity difficult . This type of ethnicity is rooted in immigrants of European descent. It could be the Feast of Saint Anthony or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This creates a situation where Caribbean blacks who are steeped in heritage are typically unable to partake in their own ethnic celebrations like their white counterparts. When Caribbean blacks arrive in America, they attempt to distance themselves from the American black (Ogbu, J.U. 425–429). When a black group attempts to celebrate its heritage, other groups march in order to disrupt these types of celebrations. Every time a black organization wants to march or celebrate, the KKK or other white supremacist group alternatively marches to cause conflict. When this type of celebration does take place, it is typically limited locally to black neighborhoods with no media coverage. Asians are treated in a similar fashion being grouped together as one nation. There are Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean and Cambodian to name a few. These people when assimilated into American culture become one group, Asian, which in many cases offers no opportunity to express their own national heritage or culture in America. Grouping of these minorities puts all blacks whether American or otherwise and Asians under the same umbrella and therefore dealing with the same stereotypes. These images ... • 9. Essay On Asian American Education Asian Americans view education as essential to improving their lives and securing their children's financial success (Kim, 1993). They view education as the only viable pathway to achieve upward mobility because they perceive limitations in non–educational pursuits (Sue and Okazaki, 1990). This notion is reflected in educational statistics, as Asian Americans are considered the fastest– growing, college–going racial group in the nation (Teranishi et al., 2004). Despite valuing education, however, many Asian Americans do not pursue a career in education, and one of the factors contributing to the lack of Asian American teachers in K–12 education is intense pressure from parents. In a pilot study done by Chang (2007), 18 first–generation Asian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Chang (2007) specifically asked the undergraduates majoring in the natural sciences/math if they would choose a social/behavioral science major, such as teaching, if it paid more, surprisingly almost all these students replied in the negative. Upon further investigation, these Asian American students revealed other factors, "such as family expectations" as a source of influence (Chang, 2007, p. 7). Chinese tradition deems teaching a highly respectable job, but Asian parents living in the United States do not view teaching in the United States with the same respect. Gordon (2000) found that these parents did not see teaching as a secure profession, equating teachers' income with poverty even though teachers receive tenure benefits. Kim's (1993) study further supports Gordon's (2000) findings on how respect for elders can have a constraining effect if it influences Asian American students' career choices, emphasizing the elevation of one's family status at the expense of individual job satisfaction–a value in a collectivistic cultural frame of ... • 11. Asian-American Analysis Paper Asian–American Analysis A minority is any category of people distinguished by physical or cultural differences that a society sets apart and subordinates. There are many different minorities in the world, each one with their own belief, language, and custom. Each one trying to gain respect, be treated equally and not as a minority. Minority is a social term that was created to separate and put constraints on a person's equality. Asian–Americans for instance have been coined as the "model minority", but even the model minority has complaints about the way the system is set up to represent them as American citizens ("Model Minority" 2015). All Asian–Americans came to the U.S. for some reason, bringing along with them cultural characteristics, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The more Asian cultures mix with America them more we take from the culture, such as Chinatowns, Chinese food, Vietnamese food, religion, fight styles, etc. We have not just taken from their cultures, but we have also added to theirs by assimilating them into our daily lives and providing different currencies and school programs along with an entirely different government system. Each culture brings something to the table. Asian–Americans have introduced three different cooking styles to the U.S., southwest, northeast, and southeast. According to Asian Nation, each cooking comes from different parts of Asia. Southwest cooking comes from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, etc. Foods from these places are connected to their religion Hinduism and can be used as medicine for good health, and longevity. Southeast cooking comes from Thailand, Viet Nam, Singapore, etc. Featured dishes in this culture are lightly prepared and aromatic, such as stir–fry, steaming, and foods with lots of herbs (Purpose of This Site). Besides food, Asian–Americans have provided new fighting styles, such as martial arts and much more. Bruce Lee was a famous Asian–American who brought martial arts to the movies, and made it mainstream for movies. One of the stereotypes that came from this was that all Asians knew martial arts, but of course, not every Asian knew martial arts. People for some reason generalize people into the same category just based on race or ethnicity believing that if one person knows something in that race then they all know ... • 13. Asian Stereotypes: Underrepresented In Media Media underrepresentation and representation is a major source for stereotypes. How Asians are portrayed in media is one source for the prejudice that Asians are geeky and nerdy friends; they are mostly casted as extras and minor roles, and few Asian actors have played a lead role. Yellowfacing also contributes to embedding stereotypes about Asians in others starting from a young age. Some stereotypes that branch out from media are: Everyone knows Martial Arts Asian men are Emasculine Submissive Asian women Books are also a form of media. Ghost in the Shell was originally a Japanese seinen manga series written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow. Many fans are upset with the casting choice. Although the majority of the cast is Asian, the main character is not. • 15. Effects Of Stereotypes On Asian Americans Americans have stereotypes and labels placed on Asians and Asian–Americans. This is also true vice versa. Most stereotypes originate from media. In Hollywood, Asians are usually portrayed as the nerdy or geeky friends. They are also mostly casted as minor roles like being extras. Asians are also underrepresented in media, like Hollywood. Even in movies that are of Asian origin, there are very little Asians who are part of the main cast. For example, in Kubo and the Two Strings, there is only one Asian cast member in the movie that places in ancient Japan. There is also the upcoming movie Ghost in the Shell. • 17. Representation Of Asian Americans In The 21st Century The Asian American community undergoes a vicious cycle; Being erroneously presented in media, theatre, and other performance arts, which have thus racialized and stereotyped nearly the entirety of the community. With media and art representation being key to shaping the way that minorities are perceived in the 21st century, many are conditioned into believing false pretenses of the Asian American population after nearly a century of marginalization and racial misrepresentation. They are, at best, viewed as dignitaries. A people who are hard working, intelligent, and referred to as "the model minority." At worst, they are cutthroat social climbers. Wing Young Huie expands on these stereotypes in his book Looking for Asian America: An Ethnocentric Tour, stating that "the more successful they are, the more threatening they are as the Yellow Peril." (Huie 2004). Such a narrative completely strips members of the community of their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 19. The Art Museum When I Was At The Asian Museum I was at the Asian Art Museum when I was facing in front of me Maternal Caress (Caresse Maternelle) by Mary Stevenson Cassatt. Though displayed in the special exhibit Looking East How Japan Inspired Monet, Van Gogh, And Other Western Artists, the artwork was originally made in Paris and decades later found itself as a collection for the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Mary Stevenson Cassatt (1844 1926) was an American impressionist painter who, similarly to the most privileged artists of her generation (Henry James condescendingly called them the "White Marmorean Flock"), traveled to Europe in the late 1860s to pursue artistic training. She eventually moved permanently with her sister, Lydia and her parents to Paris where there were less institutional modes of oppression and more access to the contemporary world at the time of painting. With time, her oeuvre now famously known for her portrayals of mothers and children was recognized by her contemporaries, and she started to partake in the Impressionists' Parisian exhibition from 1876 onwards. It is important to recognize, however, that this was fathomable for Cassatt because she was a white woman of upper middle class and as Chadwick blatantly states, "Impressionism was equally an expression of the bourgeois family as a defense against the threat of rapid urbanization and rapid industrialization..." (232). Caresse Maternelle was made in 1902, which is to say, at the turn of the century. To place this artwork in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Chinatown In America Vibrant and culturally rich, Chinatown is the center of Asian–American social and economic activity. It is a place where visitors can dabble and have a glimpse of Asian tradition, heritage, and culture – be it through food, literature, art, or entertainment. Whether in New York, San Francisco, Seattle, or Philadelphia, the lively neighborhood offers diverse, rich, and meaningful cultural experience to new and familiar faces. While some may recognize this neighborhood as a place to grab dim sum, karaoke, or buy arts and craft, the creation of Chinatown is much more complicated – and dark. Racial discrimination is and remains to be a significant makeup of the American landscape; this essay will examine the anti–Asian sentiments associated with the origins of America's oldest and most historic Chinatown located in San Francisco. In addition, this essay will describe the current challenges faced by San Francisco's Chinese community from the city's politicians and residents. The California Gold Rush and the development of the First Transcontinental Railroad, both of which occurred during the mid–nineteenth century, marked a wave of the Chinese immigration to the US. Crossing over to the West where rumors of gold laid, caught the interest of many Chinese people. Common to many, majority of Asian immigrants sought prosperity and fortune during a time of economic stagnation and political strife at home. • 23. Research On Asian American Identity Essay Sitting in a circle, most of those who were staring at me also looked like me – black hair, squinted eyes, and yellow skin. Not twenty minutes ago, I paced around the heart of a predominantly white college campus. Now, I was introducing myself to the members of Asian Students United (ASU). While I was never a part of ASU, I asked one of the organization's executive board (eboard) members – Tien, who happened to a Facebook friend – if I could attend a couple of their meetings to conduct research on Asian American identity. He delightfully agreed. After all, from an outsider perspective, I would fit right in. At these meetings, I participated in many of their activities, which included making a quilt and participating in discussions. Yet, I was always observant and somewhat detached because this was all new to me, making me an observer–participant. This allowed me to observe a range of details; however, because I was so new, such details may have been unimportant to those whom I studied. On the other hand, my Vietnamese church was all too familiar. As a full participant in the church and a former participant in Youth for Christ (YFC), I was pressed to critically observe and dissect these interactions. While I still asked the group leader for a chance to observe YFC meetings, data from this second site may be more biased toward the way I have known people in this institution from prior years. • 25. Asian Art the meaning of Dhammapada and its influence In the last two weeks we have read all the chapters in the book <<The Dhamamapada>>. And among all these chapters, chapter fifteen is my favorite. This chapter deals with the problem of lasting happiness. The Buddha tells us how we can attain the so–called inner joy in this chapter. Since all people want to live in joy, it is very helpful in our daily life. 1. Interpretation of the chapter: We live in joy because we do not hate those who hate us; we live in freedom because we do not hate even among those who hate.. We live in joy because we do not fall sick even among those who are ill. We live in joy because we are not selfish even among those selfish persons We live in joy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their mind will never be pure and peace. So the next thing that comes to my mind is that how we can overcome this selfish desire. My answer is that we have to know what is really important to us, what is our goal of life. In other words we should know what deserve to be pursuit and we may find our answer through "meditation". Actually these questions are really hard to answer and any misunderstanding may lead us back to selfish. For example some people want to pursuit success, but how can we measure success? Some may go back and say that a rich man or who has an admiring job can be called successful. It is totally wrong and shortsighted. If you hold such idea, you still cannot avoid those negative thoughts like greed and fear. So it is of vital importance to figure out what you really want and what can bring you last happiness. Different people may get different answers and once you find it you have acquire the highest wisdom. You will know whether you are in the right track and you will pay all your effort to achieve it. You know your are approaching your goal day by day. Thus our mind will become pure and peace instead of being affected by others' view. Last but not least, the Buddha also mentions the problem concerning what kind of person we should make friends with. According to the Buddha, we should make friends with the wise. In my understanding, a good friend is that who will help us to improve ourselves. They always support us when we need ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Asian culture uses art to convey the connection between people and nature in the form of brush painting and Japanese wood block printing. For instances, the Japanese wood block printing, The Great Wave created by Hokusai shows a large wave heading towards two boats. The artist leaves the art frozen, allowing the viewer to depict their own ending to the scenario. Art in the Asian–American culture incorporates nature, but not in the same ideal as art in Asia. During the movie a Caucasian fools a director in audition and pretends to be a stereotyped Asian American. "Yellow Face" is an Asian American movie that explains how Asians are used in mass media. In doing so I would begin to explain how much negative effect it will be on society. I will use four to five articles in my essay to show what roles Asian Americans get in the Hollywood movies. In general Asian Americans students are most academic achievers but when it comes to act in movies they are stereotyped and their English accent is used as foreign accent even thorough they are born American. I will give all the information that is used in media about Asian Americans. In the movie when a Caucasian movie star lies to be an Asian American. When the director know about that he is lying he is not an Asian he a Caucasian they start fighting and for the race. But he becomes a famous star in movies later on. • 31. The Forms Of Art : The Art Of Asian Art "What is Asian Art?" I repeatedly ask myself that, but still struggle to come up with a definition. Historical Asian arts carved its way into the modern world with its deep history that indicates how their objects or artifacts led to what they have in common. The process of creating an Asian Art can take up to years, but the end product is definitely worth it. Although it was difficult to find the right tools back then, they still found ways to create these types of arts which is why it is deeply appreciated for its beauty. Asian arts based on its modern discovery were created for the same purpose, but illustrated in its own unique form of style. To begin with, one of the reason why Asian Art came together was due to religion because it plays a huge role in their culture. However, not all Asian nations have the same beliefs and religion. Even though they may come from one origin, they are transformed to their own unique form in their respective Asian nation. For example, Buddhism is a very common religion throughout Asian countries. I have seen so many different forms and style of Buddha yet most of them are consistent with the same features, such as elongated ears, hand gestures (Abhrya, Varada, Vitarka, Dharma– Chakra, and Dhyana.Mudra), and flowy clothes. Even with the same religion, all beliefs towards Buddha is different and varies with location or geography. "Buddha Maitreya (Mile fo)" is a Buddha statue from the Northern Wei, China. The next corridor was an exhibit of ceramics of everyday life in the Neolithic period of the Majlayao culture (Machong phase, CA 2300–2000BC Metropolitan Museum plaque). The pottery of this period expresses similarities in the color and shapes to the art found amongst the indigenous cultures elsewhere in the world. On the side was another room with two guardian lions (6th dynasty 220–589). Lion statues were status symbols for great dwellings that were placed outside of main entranceways to promote good and to stop evil from entering in (Feng Shui, Lam 38). In the room at the Museum they guard lacquer images and woodcarvings of Buddhas. Buddha images executed in dry lacquer were highly valued by the Chinese because of the costly time–consuming process required to produce them (Metropolitan Museum wall–plaque). Possibly the lions do serve a purpose here: to prevent any evil beings from entering a room filled with prized lacquer Buddhas. The Han dynasty (25–220 CE) exhibit outside in the corridor demonstrated remarkable uniformity. In 1985, Asian immigrants made up less than half of the total immigrant population, many of which have settled in New York City and California. The "selective phenomenon" known as migration has been impelled by the "demographic, economic, social and psychological attributes" of the location (Desbarats 305). Many immigrants found themselves burdened by the conditions of living in the states. The financial and psychological struggles were not worth it when immigrants were risking to "construct networks, maintain homeland ties and, ensure that remittances reach families left behind" (Barkan 19). Whether it's grade, making friends, or keeping up the Asian stereotypes, we all have problems. What exactly is "Asian enough?" I get that all the time and until today I still don't understand it. A lot of people think we're intelligent and that we should be happy about it because it's a good thing. This statement is nowhere near being true. That statement is the worse because it makes me feel bad every time I didn't get a good grade. I didn't do well just because I didn't hit the "Asian grading scale". I wasn't "Asian enough" some would say. For example, recently in my Bio 101 I got a low 'B' on my test while Anna got a got a high' 'B'. "Don't get used to it, she is Asian after all" said John turning to Anna. It makes me bitter when people say this about me because they don't even know me and what I have done to get those grades. Little did they know I study for six hours for that Bio test and I was proud to get that grade. "Oh, you got a 'B'? isn't that an Asian F?" said anyone who is not Asian. What exactly is an Asian F? They just judge me base on my race. It doesn't matter what great things I will do in the future because all anyone will ever see is the color of my skin or the shape of my ... The Importance Of Artistic Appropriation When it comes to appropriation in artistic practices, I feel as though there are two defining lines or codes of ethics that relate to the topic in a creative context and with a cultural context – artistic appropriation, the topic of artistic freedom in practices that reference or borrow existing elements of other work, and cultural appropriation, the issue which spans between being 'inspired' by other cultural groups to potential exploitation, a lack of representation to a caricaturistic type of racism. The two types of appropriation are complex, controversial, and often come together to form two sides of the same argument – do we have the right to borrow and if so, from whom and how? For artistic appropriation, I believe it's okay to appropriate or take elements from other work as long as one edits the content both physically and contextually and as long as one cites their original sources. For cultural appropriation: I generally believe minority voices should tell their own stories but regardless, one should do their research and appropriate in a way that is authentic, accurate, and doesn't project stereotypes or other harmful and derogatory content. By Evelyn McDonnell's definition in, "Never Mind the Bollocks: Shepard Fairey's Fight for Appropriation, Fair Use, and Free Culture," appropriation is "a cultural form of explicitly borrowing from another as a means of commenting and paying tribute," (180) – the intentional act of taking to create or generate new meaning. ... • 71. The Stereotypes Of Asian American Media In today's mainstream media, there exists a visible lack of Asian American representation. When they are given roles in film and television, those roles often maintain the stereotypical ideology which has been dominant for decades. Asian American stereotypes in these media range from hard– working and servile to masters of the martial arts and often put forth a misguided or exaggerated impression of what Asian Americans are like as a group. I argue that these stereotypical representations of Asian Americans manifest themselves in viewers' minds and affect the way they view the minority group far after the they power off their television sets. These stereotypes are challenged when individual Asian Americans emerge and do not fit the mold that Hollywood has created for them. The quotes "looking at independent media artifacts, we can see the difficulties of self–representation, the potential for changing and configuring problematic images from Asian American and the media"(Ono) gives us a understanding to what independent media is to Asian Americans. Along with the quote "Inspires the creative expression of "Asian Americans who have felt excluded by particular forms of racialization"(Ono). These quotes will illustrate the shifting paradigm within the media from mainstream media to independent self produced work becoming the norm and how it can change Asian American lives demonstrated in these two films WHITEWASHING & ASIAN REPRESENTATION | Diversity Speaks – 2017 LA Film ... • 73. Asian Art Museum Intertextual Analysis My medium will be text. I will visit the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco on a Sunday and ask twenty random visitors several questions about their Asian–American identity (if they are Asian– American) and attitudes towards Asian–Americans. Before I begin the conversation, I will give a brief background about what we've been discussing in class. I will then ask them what prompted them to come to the museum, what connections they have with Asian or Asian–American culture, how often they think about race, how they see themselves in the "social hierarchy" of races (versus other races/ethnicities), and what languages they speak. It is important to note that these questions are more of a way to guide a conversation than a way to quickly get responses. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Shortcomings, the scene where Ben and Alice go to meet Alice's parents at a church stood out to me. After not understanding what Alice and her parents are saying Ben asks, "Were you guys arguing, or is that just the way your language sounds?"1 This scene captures the breakdown in relationships that result from misunderstandings. It also shows the detriment of premature judgment. With my project, I want an open dialogue between myself and the person I am conversing with so I can truly understand and appreciate their insights. I have chosen to have my conversations in the Asian Art Museum to reduce the chance that the people I am talking to will feel uncomfortable. In Jhumpa Lahiri's "Teach Yourself Italian," she admits that "When you live in a country where your own language is considered foreign, you can feel a continuous sense of estrangement."2 By having conversations in the Asian Art Museum, I am hoping that the visitors will be less intimidated by my questions and will not try to make their answers "less Asian." Being surrounded by Asian artistic culture will help make their answers more genuine. I want their thoughts to be in their own language, regardless of what their primary language ...
