Compare And Contrast Sierra And Jacie
So Different, Yet So Similar
In Mandarin Chinese, Jiayi means, "add one," and Cheng means, "journey." Sierra means, "saw," in
Spanish, and Kirkpatrick means, "the church of St. Patrick." Two names from two different cultures
are used to describe two girls with their own unique family histories. Despite Sierra and Jacie's
different origins and foundations, stemming from west Europe and east Asia, respectively, they both
developed similar personality traits, such as being open–minded and accepting, and liberal
democratic political stances that emphasize birth–given human rights.
The differences between the two are many and vast, but the most noticeable is their individual
connection to their culture and family history. Sierra's family is secular,

My First Day Of Grade At Springfield Essay
I remember my first day of 4th grade at Springfield local. I was nervous, the teacher who would be
teaching me was known to have made students do a lot of writing. Of course I have written out
small sentences and maybe some alphabetical practice on paper before, but I have never written
thoughts or ideas that coursed through my nine year old brain. We were advised to bring a journal to
keep all year throughout the class, to write about whatever topic the teacher desired to assign to the
classroom every single day. I remember walking in and pulling out my green five–star notebook and
opening to the first page. I was so nervous. Friends from grades above me told me how difficult the
class was because of the crazy amounts of writing. Our teacher was not known for being the nicest
either, other kids would say she yelled a lot at the students and was generally a mean person. All of
this, of course, intimidates a nine year old kid. The teacher told the class to write about our summer
break. I had no clue where to even start. All the little things I did with friends, the time I went to the
beach or of course just being out of school. I was overwhelmed. I now know being overwhelmed in
writing is not a curse, but a blessing. Having so much substance to write about and having trouble
picking from that list of ideas is better than going into a paper completely blind and with nothing on
your mind. With all of these ideas and memories running through my small head, I chose to write

A Look Now At China
Look now at China. The earliest inscriptions we have unearthed are dated at 1400 B.C., and the use
of these inscriptions was, once again, for religious use. As in other cultures, this required a
"magician", or a priest. The priest would heat an ox scapula or a tortoise shell until it cracks, and
would then attempt to read the cracks in order to answer a question. This reading often involved the
priest carving the "answers" into the bone under the guise of creating clarity (Lyons, 18). However
fraudulent their practices were, these priests had a huge influence on Chinese writing. The questions
the priest's client had would be written from top to bottom on the bone, and this is still the
traditional direction of Chinese script. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One con of using silk was its expense. Throughout the early world and the Middle Ages, silk was a
very time consuming product to produce. As a result, it could be sold for a higher cost, and the
method of producing it was, like the secret of producing papyrus, jealously guarded by the silk
growers. Another consequence of silk's value was that when scribes wanted to write important texts,
they would often need to write a rough draft on a jiandu strip before copying the perfected version
onto the silk. In about 104 A.D., a eunuch of the Chinese imperial court, named Cai Lun, changed
the course of writing's history by making the first sheet of paper (The Invention of Paper). To do
this, he mixed bamboo fibers and the inner bark of a mulberry tree with water, and then dried the
pulp on a cloth screen. With paper, writing became easier, more transportable, and, in general, less
expensive. Eventually, the technique for making paper spread to Korea, and from there some monks
took the process to Japan. Paper spread to Africa and Europe through the Arabs, who went on raids
in China and captured many Chinese soldiers and craftsmen. Before this happened, however, the
Greeks and Romans had to be crafty in finding new writing resources. The Romans, though they
couldn't make their own paper yet, had animal skins. Through this, they discovered that animal skins
could be stretched, cleaned, and bleached to create what was known

Cultural Differences Between Chinese And China
The relationship between China and Japan started a long time ago because these countries are very
close geographically. They have interacted with each other and have shared a lot of things, such as
goods, alphabets, and cultures. Most of these things were brought to Japan through China; therefore,
there are many things in common between the two countries. Many people are confused about the
differences between the countries. Even if Japanese tell other people that they are from Japan, some
people still misunderstand that they are Chinese. Although there are various of similarities, there are
a lot of differences. The two countries of Japan and China demonstrate similarities and differences
between appearance, alphabet, and New Year celebration to help one to understand the cultural
identity of each country.
Chinese and Japanese have similar and different appearances. For instance, they have very similar
skin types. Their skin pigment tends to range from yellow to white color, and in some areas, people
can be paler or darker. Also, their body shape is similar. "It is generally observed that people from
Korea, China, and Japan tend to be a similar short stature and slim build compared to people from
other parts of the world" ("How to Distinguish..."). However, there are some differences between
Chinese and Japanese. For example, people say that Asian people tend to have small eyes, but there
is diversity: "Japanese eyes are often described as bigger and angled downwards,

Who Is The Leader Of The Propaganda?
Besides Momotaro's popularity, there is another reason that he is chosen to be the leader of the
propaganda. "Momotaro is the embodiment of Japanese heroic courage and succeeds in overcoming
a seemingly superior enemy, who, in an analogy to the fairy tale, is a devil." Momotaro is a young
boy who is born through supernatural means and yet is accepted into being a symbolic hero for the
nation. He is untouched by outside forces, said to be a "pure Japanese hero", who faces against
"foreign demons" , which can easily represent foreign nations. His appearance is that of a human,
looking completely normal and managing to live amongst the world, only his birth is unnatural. Yet,
even his unnatural birth can be seen as divine, a holy power that makes him untainted by human
nature. He is a holy being that is born to combat darker forces, which happen to be demons. These
demons, although they appear human have one physical distinction, a horn that sticks out from their
heads, signifying that they are not completely human. They wear the disguise of being one, imitating
human form, yet are unable to completely get rid of their demonic presence. The animals that
accompany Momotaro are more human than they are for sharing the same views and unifying in
order to protect their own under their trustworthy leader. And just like the animals, the nation's
people are supposed to be just like them, willing to follow their leaders to fight against the evil that
plagues this land. Prior to

her father a businessman. During her senior year in 1941, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, and Uchida,
along with other Japanese Americans, were sent to relocation camps. She worked as a teacher while

The Evolution Of Wordless Societies Essay
The Evolution of Wordless Societies: From Ancient Egypt Hieroglyphics to Emojis Pictures have
been around long before words as a means of communicating. From ancient to modern civilizations,
pictures and symbols have been used to convey messages and capsulize the history and culture of
the society. Terms like hieroglyphics and emojis refer to systems of writing in which pictures and
symbols represent ideas and sounds. This paper will examine four writing systems of ancient and
modern societies that utilize pictures. Each of the writing systems used pictures along with letters. In
some societies, pictorial uses were reserved for the society's elite, but recently, the use of pictures as
primary text has become more main stream. Throughout time, society 's use of pictures and symbols
has transitioned from a more formal to informal method of written communication, however, it has
still maintain its primary purpose.
Ancient Egypt Hieroglyphics was one of the first writing systems to employ pictures. Hieroglyphics
was derived from the Egyptian expression "god's words." First developed in Egypt around 3000
B.C., the system continued to be used for inscriptions on monuments, wall paintings, and religious
texts until the A.D. 300s. (Wallenfels 160) Early inscriptions of this artistic writing form can be
found in a group of seals bearing the names of early Egyptian kings, pyramid Texts, which consist of
the funeral liturgy found in royal pyramids and autobiographies found in

Man’yōshū vs. Kokinshū and Their Significance
The Man'yōshū and the Kokinshū are perhaps among the most revered and earliest collections of
Japanese poetry. The Man'yōshū, meaning "Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves (or Generations)," is
believed to be compiled by the poet Ōtomo no Yakamochi sometime after AD 759 during the Nara
Period. It contains over 4,000 poems, mostly tanka, that date before the end of the eighth century,
and the writings are somewhat divided chronologically into four periods. Almost two centuries later,
the Kokin waka shū or Kokinshū, meaning "Collection of Poems Ancient and Modern," was
compiled under the imperial command of Emperor Daigo in AD 905 during the Heian Period by
several well–known poets like Ki no Tsurayuki. Unlike the Man'yōshū, the Kokinshū's ... Show

In addition, the Kokinshū also contains the manajo, or Chinese preface, which served as a political
statement to China about the recognition of Japanese poetry as its own. The Man'yōshū, on the other
hand, though it had many concluding envoys for its poetry, did not have a preface written by its
compilers or poets. The Man'yōshū and the Kokinshū also had different poetic forms, styles, and
themes. While the majority of waka in both collections were tanka (short poems), the Man'yōshū
contained much more chōka (long poems) and sedōka (head–repeated poems) than the Kokinshū,
which only contained about ten of these altogether (Miner, 161, 163). By the time of the Kokinshū's
compilation in the Heian Period, both chōka and sedōka had greatly decreased in popularity. In
terms of style, the Man'yōshū portrayed makoto (sincerity) while the Kokinshū displayed miyabi
(courtly refinement) (Varley, 60–61). For instance, in dealing with love, the

Writing Skills And School Habits
For me, writing has always been a challenge. I always felt like that I could not express myself with
the words I had been taught or that somehow I had been left out on the instructions on how to
properly write. It's always frustrated me that writing has been a challenge, and that may be why I
enjoy reading so much because other people seem to have a way with words that I don't. I love
reading other people's words a lot more than my own so much so that I tried avoiding writing as
much as possible. Of course, school involves a lot of writing so it was not like I could permanently
avoid it as much as I wish I could. So when my teacher announced that our class would be writing
plays individually and turning them in to a theatre company, I was not at all excited. I was more like
terrified about someone reading some trashy play I wrote. This moment in my life, however,
changed my writing skills and school habits quite unexpectedly. The experience of writing my own
play and having it performed was significant to me because it taught me about procrastination, hard
work, and originality. 5th grade was like any other school year except that there were a lot more
expectations and responsibilities to go along with it than the previous years, and Mrs. Schillinger
definitely expected a lot from us, at least what I thought was a lot.
"Class, today, I would like to announce a new writing assignment!" she exclaimed with a shining
smile that it blinded the first row of kids. Moans

How Does Sam Ligon Create Novels?
Sam Ligon, is a great writer. Not only is he able to create novels, but he has also written plenty of
short–shorts. Most authors, they write with the voice they have and say everything they need to
within their novels or stories. However, Ligon has something else to say. Novels are a way to dive in
deep and really get into a story through a longer period of time. Short–shorts are nearly entirely
different. They push you into the story within the first few sentences and just when you think the
story couldn't get any more intense, it ends. Just like that, boom. Sam Ligon, says this, in his own
words, basically so we understand not only the difference between them, but the difference an
author must do to make a piece they truly think is complete. ... Show more content on

I guess they just write another one and hope this ones better or turns out more successful. They write
with such feeling and emotion, that sometimes you feel as if you're apart of the story too. When I
write, I just want someone to read it. I put everything I have into a piece, everything I feel about that
particular story, even if it's not a true story, there is still some aspect that comes from a personal
experience. I love to write, as does Sam Ligon. Though I may not have the skills he has yet, I hope
to have some close to his one day. Writing gives me a release, a way to say what I want, without
actually saying a word because I can write it. The power he puts into his writing is simply
extraordinary. For example, "The Bed You've Made," is written as though he was there. Or as if he
was the one who was going through that. To combine a story and invert your own twist or personal
tie to it is not an easy thing to do. So, with him being able to do that, he gives writing a whole new
meaning. I believe that Sam Ligon was trying to say, it's not about what you write, or that you're
really writing at all. It's about the fact that you took a chance that you didn't know if something
would actually work out or not but you did it

I Am A Student At Colorado Christian University For About...
As a student, it's been an experiences. Over the course; I have grown and learned more on different
skills of writing. I been a student at Colorado Christian University for about a year. One specific
experiences that I'd recall, was when I had to write a letter to a co–worker. I thought I communicated
well, however the feedback that I received told me the opposite. The co–worker told me that I had
broken English in my writing. He told me that he was confused on what I was trying to explain.
Even though what he said was true, I was upset. I didn 't realize then, that it was important for his
feedback. I had taken many English courses, and it taught me that in order to become a writer, was
to write. One way that helped me improve and overcome my weakness of writing was feedback
from my professors and other students. The next step was to find ways to keep organized when I
began to write. In spite of all my mistakes and weakness as a writer, communication was important
through writing, because we have to use strong academic language to write. To point out that these
are just a few I listed as a reflection on my writing skills. To begin with; I learned that feedback was
important part of writing. I quickly change the way I view feedback. I used to think that I was being
judged by others with their criticism. It helped me look at it as a tool of advices when I began to
view it from another person perspective. The importance of feedback was to apply corrections that is

Writing Out Notes And Homework On A Computer
With technology's new advancements, students are getting their homework done a lot sooner than
they used to by writing their notes out on the computer instead of on paper. Is getting homework
done faster worth having to study longer later? Writing out notes and homework by hand has more
educational benefits than typing notes and homework on a computer. Various studies have proven
that writing notes have a variety of benefits that exceed those of typing notes on a computer;
retention rate, distractions, and higher grades.
In an experiment done by Mueller and Oppenheimer, students were instructed to take notes, some
students did so by hand, others by laptops. Afterwards, they were given a test on what they took
notes on. Students who wrote ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The results were that those who took the standard class had considerably higher marks than those
who took the hybrid class. Those in the hybrid course earned an average of only 69.2% while the
students in the lecture earned an average of 77.9%. According to the researchers, "students in the
hybrid course were less engaged with the material than those in the traditional section." (Adams)
This is why they believe that those who took the standard class were more successful in earning
better grades than the other students. In a different study by Robert Williams and Allan Eggert,
"Notetaking aids one's ability to recall noted information and do well on exams related to that
information." This is why it is so important for students to take notes in class. When you write out
notes in class while the teacher is talking, you are forced to listen and summarize the key points of
the lecture because writing notes are significantly slower than typing the notes. When students take
notes on computers, they generally tend to type exactly what is being said instead of focusing on
why it is important. When these students go back and read their notes, they don't have a decent
conceptual understanding of what was written beforehand. COnsequently, these students need to
spend more time studying to get the same results as

In spite of what painters, archeologists, or researchers of the nineteenth century believed about the
ancient world, cuneiform has since proven its historical mettle. As displayed by Darius and his
memorial at Bisitun, the early, crude cuneiform of 5000 B.C.E. adapted itself to culture after culture,
and morphed into the dusty forerunner of our modern alphabet. The Phoenicians, the original
ancient mariners, are responsible for transforming cuneiform into a more efficient writing system by
paring down the somewhat ungainly number of 5,000 cuneiform characters into 29 characters.
Adopted around 1000 B.C.E., the Phoenician alphabet was not a collection of pictographs like many
early forms of writing, but instead a close relative of many modern writing systems.11 The
sophisticated navy and extensive trade network of Phoenicia ensured that this new version of
cuneiform would quickly spread to its ancient neighbors. Phoenicia's alphabet would soon be
adopted by the Greeks, who also refined and perfected this writing system to meet their own needs;
likewise the Romans, eager inheritors of all things Greek, adopted the alphabet for their own use. It
could be said that the highly adaptive descendants of cuneiform formed the basis for the literature of
the Classical world. The Phoenician cuneiform alphabet was also adopted by Jewish culture,
providing a medium for Hebrew narrative and progressive sense of history, another innovation

My Passion For Cooking Essay
I've always had a passion for cooking. When I was a little girl I loved to cook and enjoyed learning
about all sort of cuisines. Today, I am still in the kitchen and every chance I get, I cook. Some days
it isn't even fancy or a hard recipe. Some days it's a classic, but something that I've created. Cooking
is my time to be me. It's the "art form" I pride myself at being good at and I don't have to try (unlike
drawing...not so good at that!). Like a child getting a new toy, I get excited when I discover new
foods and ingredients. My mind feels "at home" when it's in the process of creating in the kitchen.
It's fun getting the ingredients, piling them all on the counter, then chopping, stirring, adding a pinch
of this and a splash of that. Then I have to wait for everything to cook. Finally the reward of my
creativity is taken out of the oven and placed on a plate. The creative work I've done is fully realized
when I can share my work with others.
Cooking is pure joy and fun for me. I cook as a way to ground myself, to think clearly and to relax
for a change. I enjoy researching ingredients I've never heard of before, what pairs best with this
spice or that vegetable. When someone strikes up a conversation with me about cooking, I could go
on for hours, so be prepared! Through cuts, burns, failed recipes, forgotten ingredients, I still find
joy in the art of cooking. Losing this passion would surely be like losing myself.
As a way to challenge myself, I started selling

Research Concept Paper
Research title: Using Oral Corrective Feedback Collaborate with Written Corrective Feedback to
Encourage long–term improvement and understanding of English Writing Skill
Introduction Nowadays, English is one of important languages in the world because it is used as an
international language in all fields around the world. From this reason, it is necessary to know all
aspects of this language. Academic English writing is also an important skill since it is used
extensively in higher education and in the workplace makes English writing ability becomes a
necessary skill. However, many Thai students who don't have good writing ability are not able to
write accurately even English major students. This study will find out the way to improve writing
skill in university students. The researchers believe that one of the factors affecting the writing
ability is the way of giving corrective feedback of teachers and the feedback can help learners
develop their writing skill. There are two types of corrective feedback which usually found in
university writing courses: written corrective feedback and oral corrective feedback. However, the
lecturers normally use only written corrective feedback in their classes. This teaching strategy still
has a gap that some students don't understand why the mistakes are not correct. Moreover, this gap
of using only one method of using corrective feedbacks cannot make students improve their writing
ability.

Hafu Essay
Hafu is the term used in Japan to describe children of half–Japanese descent. This term is derived
from the English
" Half " which, when used in the Japanese language, indicates that a person is only half of the
Japanese culture. According to " Hafu Japanese " the term Hafu originated in the 1970s and is now
the most commonly used label for half–Japanese children (Hafu Japanese, 2010). Being called half
might seem like an insult to some people, in Japan it is not really meant this way. In a YouTube
video Japanese got asked about what image they have about Hafu, most of them answered that they
wanted to be a Hafu as well. Almost all the answers to this question were positive; they are pretty,
they have long legs, they have the best of both worlds. The majority of the Japanese seem to have
positive views on what it is like to be a Hafu, but they might not have a proper understanding of
what it is like to be Hafu. So despite the positive image the Japanese have, life in Japan is not easy
for people with mixed roots (Views from the street on Hafu, 2010).

The simple coins used to identify and categorize farming goods gave rise to the practice of pressing
coins into the clay tablets to make a like image of the coins in the form of raised symbols on the
clay; the coins used to identify farming and manufacturing goods were then used to create a new
format to be drawn on the clay tablets with a tool called a stylus. The marks left on the clay by using
the stylus had a wedge–shaped appearance which is how these images received the name of
"cuneiform" meaning wedge–writing. The earliest known implementation of cuneiform to
symbolize sounds produced by the Sumerian tongue show up on pieces of clay that are estimated to
have been produced around the time of 3100BC. These tablets were discovered around a city called
Jemdet, in ancient Nasr which is located in the same area where Iraq resides today. The steps
towards a complete writing system of the Sumerian language most likely developed around 400 to
900 years after the introduction of the cuneiform tablets mentioned above, this process entails the
transition of using these images as a representation of sounds that the Sumerian language creates
instead of actual visual representations of the objects that they are in reference of or as memory aids.

Similarities Between Emoticons And Emojis
Emojis, A History
Emojis – the little picture messages that have worked their way into our devices, hearts, and to some
extent, our speech! Where did they come from? Furthermore, how did they take over? For that
matter, what even constitutes an emoji? Relatively few of us take the time consider these questions,
despite their central, all encompassing role in our daily lives. The answers, as will soon be
discovered, are rich and fascinating!
A tiny misnomer that needs to be clarified, before we go down the emoji rabbit hole, is that emojis
are not emoticons. These two terms are often interchangeably used, but they are in fact quite
different!

The Father of Emoji: Shigetaka Kurita

Pagers were booming in popularity amongst the youth in Japan, and the mobile device company
NTT Docomo decided to add a heart symbol to their Pocket Bell device. This allowed people to
send a cute picture message to their friends. Pocket Bell users loved this feature. However, when
NTT Docomo decided to market their devices to a more business–friendly market, they abandoned
their heart emoji precursor. To say that the users were upset is an understatement. Imagine if Apple
took a feature away from the iPhone, and you hated the move so much that you actually switched
phones. (We lose features all the time, but we don't all feel as strongly about it). Users actually
started to leave NTT Docomo pagers, in favor of competitors that had adopted the heart symbol.

write papers. In my history as a writer any subject, assignment, or just writing that I have done that I
enjoyed was exciting and fun to write. When composing papers on subjects I am interested in,
writing becomes more enjoyable. Growing up, fooling around with writing was something I did for
fun and I would write about being in the MLB. I started off by sitting on my twin bed, daydreaming
about what it would be like to be a professional baseball player. The Yankees were the team I always
dreamed of playing for, pinstripes looked great on me. When I thought of situations I would be in I
had to write it down, this led to the beginning of my story. I sat down at my black desk with a pen
and a composition notebook and began the create my version of a masterpiece. It felt like steam was
coming out of my head because of my thoughts and my hand was moving as fast as wind in a
hurricane. Writing this story gave me a rush as if I was actually playing in this game. After finishing
my thought, the experience made my writing as enjoyable as actually playing the game. Later, in
elementary school, I would write love letters to the cute girls in class. The first love letter was to my

Typography And The Printing Press
1. Typography Typography, according to Preece and Wells, is the design or selection of letter forms
to be organized into words and sentences for printing upon a page. Furthermore, the practice of
typography goes beyond the creation of the type or the font. According to Preece and Wells,
typography includes paper selection, the choice of ink to be used in printing, the printing method,
and the binding process in cases where the printed material is a book. Although the use of
typography became drastically more popular during the invention of the printing press in the mid–
fifteenth century, the use of typography goes beyond this period in history. Before the invention of
the concept of typography, writing was already a popular form of visual communication, the history
of which dates to the use of hieroglyphs or pictograms in ancient times (Siebert). Per John Siebert,
before the invention of the printing press which revolutionized the practice of typography, the
alphabets, and phonographic writing, these ancient forms of writing were used by civilizations to
express their ideas. The very first recorded examples of written communication were the ancient
cave paintings dating back around 20,000 years; however, the first forms of formal writing were
invented by the Sumerians around 3500 B.C (Siebert). According to John Siebert, ancient writing
systems grew more complex as civilizations began to advance. Ancient Egyptians incorporated
symbols and ideograms into their structures

The Pros And Cons Of Cultural Appropriation
Cultural appropriation is a crime in 2017. The Kardashian family is constantly under criticism for
cultural appropriation, as Khloé Kardashian has been accused of appropriating Native American
headdresses, while Kylie Jenner has come under fire more than once for wearing cornrows. Kendall
Jenner's Pepsi commercial, where she quelled a protest by offering a soda to a police officer, was
lambasted as offensive and tone–deaf. These are the scenarios that the word "appropriation" brings
to mind: privileged young women and cultural insensitivity. In "I Can't Stop Thinking through What
Other People are Thinking", David Shields describes a wholly different cast of appropriators: artists,
writers, and composers.
In his essay, Shields unleashes his frustrations regarding the country's negative attitude towards
appropriation and borrowing. He asserts that "there's no such thing as originality", that "all life on
earth...is built upon appropriation and reuse of the pre–existing" (Shields 736). Shields utilizes a
multitude of examples to illustrate and support his points. Musicians from Mozart to Bob Dylan
have utilized content or taken inspiration from other artists. Shields shows that "borrowing has been
with us from the beginning", citing the New Testament and Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra as
"composites of numerous sources" (740). His essay demonstrates that borrowing is prevalent in
music and writing, as artists take inspiration from preceding artists and from their

Reflective Reflection In English
Throughout this course, I have grown as a writer and learned many things I was previously unaware
of. What I pictured English 101 to entail is nothing compared to what I experienced. Going into this
class, I was thinking in the most negative tone: "There is no way I am going to be able to write four
full pages," "There is not enough time to write papers," "The work load is overwhelming," "There is
only four summarize grades." However, these thoughts quickly became reversed as the year
progressed as I was pushed to limits I did not even know I had. As I began writing, I became more
aware of my strengths and weakness, enjoyments and frustrations, and future plans and goals. After
exploring all papers, there are strengths and weaknesses prevalent throughout. It is important to
know these qualities and capacities in order to leverage certain strengths and improve specific
weaknesses. Using this knowledge, I came up with one overall weaknesses throughout my writing
that show up in multiple instances. One of them would be subject–verb agreement. Subjects and
verbs must agree with one another in number (singular or plural). Thus, if a subject is singular, its
verb must also be singular; if a subject is plural, its verb must also be plural. In the present tense,
nouns and verbs form plurals in opposite ways: nouns add an s to the singular form; verbs remove
the s from the singular form. For example, talking about "A Good Man is Hard to Find" in paper
one, I wrote "Children tend to

Analysis Of Proust And The Squid By Maryanne Wolf
# Essay 3
*Proust and the Squid,* by Professor Maryanne Wolf, unveils and celebrates reading, "one of the
single most remarkable inventions in history." (3) While it might seem absurd today, reading was
invented only a few thousand years ago, and consequently it has had an undeniably colossal
influence on humanity. Imagining a world without text seems unbelievable now, but for the better
part of humanity this medium of communication was nonexistent. In this book,
> [Wolf] hope[s] to push [the readers] gently toward reconsidering things [they] might long have

Far from being a one–dimensional action, reading depends on hundreds of interweaving threads and
neurons in the human brain. In an infinity loop, whenever a new experience occurs, the human brain
constructs new connections among already existing structures. These new structures enhance the
action of doing the original, causative experience; then those same structures strengthen, and so
forth. This positive feedback loop in known as *neural plasticity,* and is, in short, "the basis for
much of who we are, and who we might become." (3)
Reading is an intellectual feat of monstrous proportions. It changes the brain, and thus "[it is a]
powerful mirror of... how the brain learns anything new." (4) To better comprehend its magnitude,
Wolf divides her work into three topics: the history of reading, how a modern child learns to read,
and the case when a child struggles to learn to read. These three sections, when taken together,
provide a holistic and nuanced view of the act of reading, making the reader appreciate the things
once taken for granted. Out of the three sections, it is the beginning section, which illustrates the
invention of reading in history, that is most

7c's of Written Communication
7 C's off effective communication (with respect to written communication):
Written communication occupies an important position in the communication sphere, so written
communication has to pay adequate attention on certain principles of necessity. The essentials of
every written communication are principles of unity, coherence and emphasis. These principles
along with other essentials of effective communication, like language, planning and organization
make the written communication effective.
* Clarity: The writing should be correctly planned and expressed in a logical way,and the writer
should make sure that the ideas flow smoothly from beginning to end. The message must be so clear

Coherence means, tying together of several ideas, under one main topic in any paragraph. Smooth
flow, lucidity and transition aspects should be given effect to and there should not be any scope for
the reader to misinterpret, mis–read or mis– spell the message. Coherence is given to a larger
paragraph or section of a message and leads to purposeful communication where the writer is well
received, read, understood and acted upon by the reader. * Conciseness: Conciseness is an important
factor in effective communication. It means saying all that needs to be said and no more. The
aimless verbiage, unnecessary details and heavy paragraphs make our communication ridiculous and
ineffective. We must omit those words and sentences from our message, which are not likely to
bring about results. The message, which can be expressed in fewer words, is more impressive and
effective than the same message expressed in a number of words. The communicator must organize
his message in such a way that every word in it is meaningful and of interest to the receiver. Even a
single word or a sentence, which does not contribute to accomplish the purpose of the
communication, should be carefully omitted. Conciseness refers to thoughts expressed in the fewest
words consistent with writing. It is achieved in writing in definite style and use of precise words.
Unnecessary superlatives, exaggeration and indirect beginning should be avoided. Care should be
taken to

The Ability Of Communicate Through Writing
Summary of the project:
The ability to communicate through writing has been imperative to meet various needs such as
social, professional and academic needs (Mahendran, 2013). However, writing is a difficult and a
complicated skill especially for students who are non–native of a particular language, which makes
it hard for them to meet the writing needs in academic domains particularly. This difficulty is
attributed to the fact that writing comes at last as a skill in terms of its acquirement for both native
and second language speakers of the language (Hamp and Heasly, 2006). For the sake of facilitating
the acquirement of this important skill, effective and new approaches to teaching are to be
incorporated in the classroom practices. One of these approaches is Systemic Functional Linguistics,
which views language as a set of systems, each of which offers people choices to express meanings
(Bloor & Bloor, 1995). This project is two case studies of an EFL classroom that is based on Saudi
Arabia with the intention of improving the academic writing concentrating on two persuasive genre
writings, which are discussion and exposition genres. To do so, SFL is employed with its powerful
analytical tools that are helpful in educational contexts. In particular, these analytical tools examine
written language in the way sentences and clauses are organized as well as the way sentences are
joined together to make a whole text (Coffin, 1996; Feez, 1998; Rothery,

How To Write Kanji Essay
Kanji is unique language in the world. This language is not like English that makes the word with
consonant and vowel letters. Kanji has the morphographic language that one letter with the meaning
and the pronunciation, and there are more than 2000 letters of Kanji in Japanese Language. If we are
learning Japanese, we have to memorize many Kanji characters with meaning and sound because
Japanese uses Kanji a lot in their society. However, actually knowing Kanji is hard for many people.
Even native Japanese people sometimes do not know how to read Kanji, which is rarely used.
Therefore, there is a debate that about abolishing Kanji. Does Japanese actually need to use Kanji?
Japanese language has already two phonographic scripts, Hiragana and Katakana, so some of people
can argue that Japanese does not need Kanji is too complicated to learn Japanese. However, in my
opinion, Kanji abolishment is not a good choice for Japanese for tradition and uniqueness.
There is an article "Aspects of the graphological structure of Japanese" written by A. E. Backhouse.
Backhouse introduces the Kanji system and both native–Japanese and Sino–Japanese homography
and homophony. He gives some examples of Japanese words that have same sounds and different
meanings such as Soko, which has two meanings, the place and the bottom. In addition, he
introduces the similar meaning but different using such as Atsui, means hot or warm. These are

Why Should A Young Child Be Allowed?
8. Why should a young child be allowed to scribble? What is the importance of it?
According to Schickendanz and Collins, scribbling is one of the primary forms of written expression
for very young children. Scribbling is important because children learn to differentiate their
scribbling from writing as they develop. Scribbling is the source of writing for young children.
9. What are the stages of scribbling? List and briefly describe each.
Early scribbling or uncontrolled scribbling is when children make random marks on paper. Most
children began early scribbling before their first birthday. It is also compared to babbling or baby
talk. You can't read early scribbling. Instead of asking a child what the scribbling says or what is it,
you should just encourage a child to keep scribbling.
Controlled scribbling is when children began to make systematic marks that include circles, vertical
lines, dots and squares. Most children began controlled scribbling between the ages of three and six.
It is also called scribble writing. According to Harste, Woodard, and Burke the scribble reflects the
children's native language.
Scribble drawing is more pictographic in expression. Children between the ages of four and six use
scribble drawings as a written expression of their work. Drawing helps children with writing
development and eye–hand coordination. Children should be given an opportunity to talk about the
picture. Once children learn the difference between writing and

Writing has been common since times before the Common Era. Writing is the activity of marking
coherent words on paper and composing text. It can also be referred to as something typed on a
computer and published. Every language spoken has a coordinating written language. Several
alphabets have been produced and used, some of them are no longer used but we still study them for
historical purposes. Sentences are composed of strings of letters that make words and punctuation
that make up thoughts that we simply put on paper. Writing is also considered a form of technology,
not a language. Writing did not start as words in a book or lyrics to a song. It started as drawings on

This was also the first alphabet to include vowels. There are modern and ancient forms of the Greek
language in writing, as well as the spoken language. He ancient Greeks even had two different
numeric systems in use, called the acrophonic and attic systems. The Greek alphabet and language
eventually evolved into Latin in about the sixth century BCE, which was created by Romulus, the
founder of Rome. The Latin is no longer known well, but many medical terms were developed from
the Latin language, so most medical students are very familiar with Latin. It is still taught in schools
today, because many words have Latin roots and can help us better understand the word's meaning.
The roots are commonly seen in science, such as the Latin roots eco and bio. Ecology is the study of
the Earth, this is assumed by the fact that the Latin root eco means Earth and ology means the study
of. Latin was commonly used through about 1900, because all college students were required to
learn the language, although the writing is not in classical Latin. In fact, a manuscript called The
Book of Kells was written in Latin

Writing In Ancient Egypt
Back in ancient times, the development of the first urban cultures was due to gradual changes and
advancements that contributed to a communal society. As agriculture and specialized jobs started to
become the norm in early cities, citizens began to realize that they were missing something that was
crucial to their productivity and organization: a system of writing and recordkeeping. While most
ancient civilizations created a form of writing, Mesopotamian and Egyptian societies utilized them
for more than just recordkeeping. These advancements serve as ancient origins of how we use
written language in the present day. While there are currently countless forms of writing in the
modern age, the concept of writing and literacy is treasured ... Show more content on

This is one of the earliest religious texts of the empire and was an instructional guide that explains
how the pharaoh is going to pass into the afterlife. This source was probably composed in Egypt by
a native Egyptian male who was religious and of high status due to the important nature of the
document. Because it dealt directly with the pharaoh and his burial, this source was likely only read
by high ranking religious figures that performed the burial rituals. In addition, it was written in
hieroglyphics, which signifies its crucial purpose. There are many religious references in the text,
including ones that discuss Osiris, god of the underworld, and Horus, a god linked to life and
kingship. The Egyptians also seemed to think that specific burial rituals were sacred and heavily tied
into religion. This source is similar to Primary Source 2.1 in that it has to do with a great ruler with
heavy religious implications. However, it is different because it was written in a pyramid as opposed
to a slab or papyrus. Any writing in a pyramid was considered sacred and this source appears to be
much more important than the Mesopotamian one. The discovery of pyramids had a great impact on
modern day society and the decoding of the hieroglyphics with the Rosetta Stone was a linguistic
marvel. Both forms of Egyptian writing have helped modern societies and have brought us together;
for example, it is common to see writings similar to hieroglyphics in pyramids on current day
monuments and tombs. However, these two forms of writing have also encouraged diversity. Most
modern societies speak countless different languages, some of them even having formal and
informal styles of writing, such as the Japanese kanji and

Reflection Paper
I originally saw poetry as a gargantuan chore of literacy. The idea in my cranium about poetry was,
every poem or piece of writing had to be all about love or disgusting topics. But, junior year, that all
changed with one student teacher. Ms. Evans changed my entire view of poetry and literature as a
whole, she taught me how creative you can be with writing and books. Ironically, I fell in love with
writing poetry about anything but love. I had teachers that abased my creativity, but alas, I prevailed.
My early experiences with poetry were not really that joyful. I was not fond of poetry in the sense
that, it was only focused on pleasant feeling and emotions. I wanted to write about death, murder,
and sacrifice. My early English teacher, Ms. Trogdon was not fond of this idea, due to the fact she
had no idea why a 15 year–old whom was generally very happy, wanted to write about such
horrifying topics! I fumbled and faked my way through the poetry unit for 2 years I had with her. I
mainly wrote to fit an outline or "Please the crown".
Junior year began, and with a new, older, and mundane teacher I was expecting the same
requirements when it came time to a poetry unit. It was almost as if I was trained to dodge some sort
of creativity or taboo topic "bullets". But the revolutionary message came one day,
"Class, I want you to meet a new student–teacher, Ms. Evans. She will be doing the poetry unit with
you for the following 9 weeks with me supervising."
The class was in shock

A Brief Note On The Causes And Solutions
Dysgraphia: The Causes and Solutions
Kelsey Swain
Ashland University
Take a moment to reflect on your day, how often do you find yourself writing. We live in a world
that revolves around technology. If you think about it, we have email on our cell phones so we do
not have to write letters, we have cars that can park themselves, and we even have televisions that
are smarter than some human beings! Despite how much technology surrounds us, writing is
something that will never go away. Written language is something we experience in every day life
and it is something that is essential to daily activities. Whether or not we realize it, written language
is present in all aspects of our lives. "The good and readable handwriting is another dimension that
is necessary in developing society" (Rostami, p. 10). Although the written language is such a large
part of our daily living, how we express this written language, spelling, is often overlooked. Rostami
states, "handwriting is generally the storage of information. The data are written objectively and
everyone can use it in every time and place. From the benefits of handwriting we can refer to the
limited amount of data that human memory can hold and the unlimited amount of data that can be
stored in written form. Thus, humans are not only able to learn the knowledge of their ancestors, but
also they can use them to achieve new discoveries and new conclusions" (p.7).
Although skilled handwriting is required for 30%

Social media has affected the student's abilities, but mostly in the ability to write. Social media on

My Favorite Part Of Writing
Writing is not my favorite thing to do at all, I tend to get distracted but at the same time I can not
concentrate without them. Many of my of those distractions can be friends, background music, cell
phones or music. My question for everyone is can distractions or the way you sit affect the way you
write? For me I need movement around me when I am writing it helps me stay focused, I can't stand
the silence. My writing process starts with me walking to the library after lunch. I tend to look for
the biggest tables because I like to have a big space to have my papers and books. Also usually one
of my friends joins me midway. After I am seated I take out my Hp with a ñ and turn it on. While it
is turning on I usually get on my phone and look at my social media feed. Normally around me there
are other students working in groups and having conversations. Libraries were never my favorite
environment to do homework or write, this is because it is way too quiet. Just like Faris I enjoy
being around conversations and movement. The conversations and movement helps me focus as
well as inspire me. Most recently I discovered that the university has certain floors where people are
allowed to talk and be in groups. In those floors is where I am usually at. I will rent a cubical and sit
there and do my work.
Normally my friends join me and we work together at the cubicles. Just like me my friends dislike
the library for the same reasons. So we usually met up and do our work together.

Introduction The Sumerians were the most successful ancient civilization. The first reason is they

civilization because they created the first written language. For example, without the Sumerians, we
humans would not have the invention of writing. Their writing was called cuneiform. Cuneiform is
when they took a stylus and imprinted writing on clay tablets. The Sumerians would sometimes also
imprint on wax, stone, and metal. Cuneiform is considered the most significant among the many
cultural contributions of the Sumerians. Cuneiform writing is traced back from c. 3500 – 3000 BC.
The writing wasn 't first actually words. They used pictographs for writing in their records. Instead
of writing letters "s–u–n", a Sumerian would imprint a pictograph of what they had as a sun on a
clay tablet. Also, they used symbols that represented traded goods and livestock. The Sumerians
used writing to keep records and to keep their stories. Before the actual writing on the clay tablets
was created, the Sumerians originally had tokens. The tokens were items that represented words.
They were kept safe together in a sealed clay envelope. The way the Sumerians knew what was in
the envelope was that they press the tokens into the clay on the outside. The reason that they had the
tokens in

What is communication? We often define communication as the act of talking to one another via
different platforms, be it face to face, via emails or even through videos. Through this act, we are
trying to pass a message or relate something to the intended audience. We face this every day in our
lives, even if we do not leave the house and talk to anyone. For example, even reading a cooking
recipe is counted as a form of communication. It is a form of communication between the reader and

Many people would know of this unfortunate incident, but not many would know that it was
probably the cause of an ineffective communication. The incident goes as follows, In July of 1945,
the allied leaders had a meeting in Potsdam and they submitted a stiffly–worded declaration of
surrender terms to the Japanese. These terms had included a statement to the effect that any negative
answer would invite "prompt and utter destruction." The allied leaders (Harry S Truman, Winston
Churchill and Stalin) also stated that they hoped that Japan would agree to surrender unconditionally
and prevent devastation of the Japanese homeland and that they patiently awaited Japan's answer.
This was known as the Potsdam Declaration. The Japanese Premier at that time, Kantaro Suzuki
answered using the Japanese word 'mokusatsu', which is derived from the word for 'silence'. Yet, this
word had a second meaning which also means "not worthy of comment". In the heat of the moment,
the meaning was thought to be the second one, which may be true as the Japanese were very
prideful, as we can see from the Kamikaze spirit. To rather die than be captured. After the allied
leaders knew of this reply, ten days later the atomic bomb was dropped at

The Importance Of Technology In Education
Part A
Despite its importance, writing is not given enough attention in schools compare to reading. Since
the turn of the 21st century, "there have been a number of significant changes in the contexts in
which we teach and in which our students learn to write". Our culture has taken a digital shift in all
aspects of life, including schooling and the way students are exposed to writing curriculum.
Robinson, McKenna and Conradi state that "The context of schooling has also changed, with
programs and practices affected most directly by an emphasis on standards and assessments as a part
of a growing concern with accountability. Given a focus on reading, rather than writing or literacy
more generally...this movement has had an impact on teaching and learning at all levels of public
education" (Robinson, McKenna & Conradi, 2012, p. 243).
In a digital world, it is no secret that technology has influenced the way students learn in schools. As
referenced by Robinson, McKenna and Conradi, in 2005 Leu, an educational psychologist and
professor, "reflected that the internet as well as evolving technologies are not technological issues
but literacy issues" (Robinson, McKenna & Conradi, 2012, p. 266). I agree with Leu since I believe
technology is a positive tool for student learning if used correctly, however, there is a difference
between using technology to support learning and using technology to do the learning. Digital
versions of printed text included hypermedia which allows readers

EMERGENT LITERACY
Emergent literacy is used to describe how a young child interacts with books and when reading and
writing, even though they could not read or write in the usual sense of way. Emergent literacy is a
process that takes place over the timeframe from birth until a child can read and write in what we
think to be a standard sense. The key to term literacy is the consistency of all parts of language:
speaking, listening, reading, writing, and viewing. Some people believe that, up until a child starts

Characteristics Of The English Language Learners
1. There are many types of diversity. List two types and explain how those affect students' reading
abilities.
Linguistic diversity is when a student's first language is not the language of instruction at school.
According to Garcia, American Standard English is seen as a vital tool for success in the United
States which affects reading abilities of English language learners. Since the implantation of No
Child Left Behind and Common Core, English language learners have to a second language and
complex academic materials. Teacher have to understand the English language learners face unique
challenges when learning to read and have limited background and vocabulary restrictions.
Cultural diversity is the situation that results when a student's home, family, socioeconomic group,
culture, and society differ from the predominant culture of the school. It is closely related to
linguistic diversity. The student's language is related to culture. When the language that the students
uses at home is different at school, it affects the child ability to communicate which affects the
student's reading ability.
2. There are four instructional approaches that schools use to transform the curriculum in order to
make accommodations for students who are culturally diverse. List and explain two approaches.
The transformative approach is when teachers provide opportunities for students to read about
concepts and events. It is more social, and students read and discuss cultural

Compare And Contrast Sierra And Jacie

  • 1. Compare And Contrast Sierra And Jacie So Different, Yet So Similar In Mandarin Chinese, Jiayi means, "add one," and Cheng means, "journey." Sierra means, "saw," in Spanish, and Kirkpatrick means, "the church of St. Patrick." Two names from two different cultures are used to describe two girls with their own unique family histories. Despite Sierra and Jacie's different origins and foundations, stemming from west Europe and east Asia, respectively, they both developed similar personality traits, such as being open–minded and accepting, and liberal democratic political stances that emphasize birth–given human rights. The differences between the two are many and vast, but the most noticeable is their individual connection to their culture and family history. Sierra's family is secular, ... • 3. My First Day Of Grade At Springfield Essay I remember my first day of 4th grade at Springfield local. I was nervous, the teacher who would be teaching me was known to have made students do a lot of writing. Of course I have written out small sentences and maybe some alphabetical practice on paper before, but I have never written thoughts or ideas that coursed through my nine year old brain. We were advised to bring a journal to keep all year throughout the class, to write about whatever topic the teacher desired to assign to the classroom every single day. I remember walking in and pulling out my green five–star notebook and opening to the first page. I was so nervous. Friends from grades above me told me how difficult the class was because of the crazy amounts of writing. Our teacher was not known for being the nicest either, other kids would say she yelled a lot at the students and was generally a mean person. All of this, of course, intimidates a nine year old kid. The teacher told the class to write about our summer break. I had no clue where to even start. All the little things I did with friends, the time I went to the beach or of course just being out of school. I was overwhelmed. I now know being overwhelmed in writing is not a curse, but a blessing. Having so much substance to write about and having trouble picking from that list of ideas is better than going into a paper completely blind and with nothing on your mind. With all of these ideas and memories running through my small head, I chose to write ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. A Look Now At China Look now at China. The earliest inscriptions we have unearthed are dated at 1400 B.C., and the use of these inscriptions was, once again, for religious use. As in other cultures, this required a "magician", or a priest. The priest would heat an ox scapula or a tortoise shell until it cracks, and would then attempt to read the cracks in order to answer a question. This reading often involved the priest carving the "answers" into the bone under the guise of creating clarity (Lyons, 18). However fraudulent their practices were, these priests had a huge influence on Chinese writing. The questions the priest's client had would be written from top to bottom on the bone, and this is still the traditional direction of Chinese script. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One con of using silk was its expense. Throughout the early world and the Middle Ages, silk was a very time consuming product to produce. As a result, it could be sold for a higher cost, and the method of producing it was, like the secret of producing papyrus, jealously guarded by the silk growers. Another consequence of silk's value was that when scribes wanted to write important texts, they would often need to write a rough draft on a jiandu strip before copying the perfected version onto the silk. In about 104 A.D., a eunuch of the Chinese imperial court, named Cai Lun, changed the course of writing's history by making the first sheet of paper (The Invention of Paper). To do this, he mixed bamboo fibers and the inner bark of a mulberry tree with water, and then dried the pulp on a cloth screen. With paper, writing became easier, more transportable, and, in general, less expensive. Eventually, the technique for making paper spread to Korea, and from there some monks took the process to Japan. Paper spread to Africa and Europe through the Arabs, who went on raids in China and captured many Chinese soldiers and craftsmen. Before this happened, however, the Greeks and Romans had to be crafty in finding new writing resources. The Romans, though they couldn't make their own paper yet, had animal skins. Through this, they discovered that animal skins could be stretched, cleaned, and bleached to create what was known ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Cultural Differences Between Chinese And China The relationship between China and Japan started a long time ago because these countries are very close geographically. They have interacted with each other and have shared a lot of things, such as goods, alphabets, and cultures. Most of these things were brought to Japan through China; therefore, there are many things in common between the two countries. Many people are confused about the differences between the countries. Even if Japanese tell other people that they are from Japan, some people still misunderstand that they are Chinese. Although there are various of similarities, there are a lot of differences. The two countries of Japan and China demonstrate similarities and differences between appearance, alphabet, and New Year celebration to help one to understand the cultural identity of each country. Chinese and Japanese have similar and different appearances. For instance, they have very similar skin types. Their skin pigment tends to range from yellow to white color, and in some areas, people can be paler or darker. Also, their body shape is similar. "It is generally observed that people from Korea, China, and Japan tend to be a similar short stature and slim build compared to people from other parts of the world" ("How to Distinguish..."). However, there are some differences between Chinese and Japanese. For example, people say that Asian people tend to have small eyes, but there is diversity: "Japanese eyes are often described as bigger and angled downwards, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Who Is The Leader Of The Propaganda? Besides Momotaro's popularity, there is another reason that he is chosen to be the leader of the propaganda. "Momotaro is the embodiment of Japanese heroic courage and succeeds in overcoming a seemingly superior enemy, who, in an analogy to the fairy tale, is a devil." Momotaro is a young boy who is born through supernatural means and yet is accepted into being a symbolic hero for the nation. He is untouched by outside forces, said to be a "pure Japanese hero", who faces against "foreign demons" , which can easily represent foreign nations. His appearance is that of a human, looking completely normal and managing to live amongst the world, only his birth is unnatural. Yet, even his unnatural birth can be seen as divine, a holy power that makes him untainted by human nature. He is a holy being that is born to combat darker forces, which happen to be demons. These demons, although they appear human have one physical distinction, a horn that sticks out from their heads, signifying that they are not completely human. They wear the disguise of being one, imitating human form, yet are unable to completely get rid of their demonic presence. The animals that accompany Momotaro are more human than they are for sharing the same views and unifying in order to protect their own under their trustworthy leader. And just like the animals, the nation's people are supposed to be just like them, willing to follow their leaders to fight against the evil that plagues this land. Prior to ... • 13. The Evolution Of Wordless Societies Essay The Evolution of Wordless Societies: From Ancient Egypt Hieroglyphics to Emojis Pictures have been around long before words as a means of communicating. From ancient to modern civilizations, pictures and symbols have been used to convey messages and capsulize the history and culture of the society. Terms like hieroglyphics and emojis refer to systems of writing in which pictures and symbols represent ideas and sounds. This paper will examine four writing systems of ancient and modern societies that utilize pictures. Each of the writing systems used pictures along with letters. In some societies, pictorial uses were reserved for the society's elite, but recently, the use of pictures as primary text has become more main stream. Throughout time, society 's use of pictures and symbols has transitioned from a more formal to informal method of written communication, however, it has still maintain its primary purpose. Ancient Egypt Hieroglyphics was one of the first writing systems to employ pictures. Hieroglyphics was derived from the Egyptian expression "god's words." First developed in Egypt around 3000 B.C., the system continued to be used for inscriptions on monuments, wall paintings, and religious texts until the A.D. 300s. (Wallenfels 160) Early inscriptions of this artistic writing form can be found in a group of seals bearing the names of early Egyptian kings, pyramid Texts, which consist of the funeral liturgy found in royal pyramids and autobiographies found in ... • 15. Man’yōshū vs. Kokinshū and Their Significance The Man'yōshū and the Kokinshū are perhaps among the most revered and earliest collections of Japanese poetry. The Man'yōshū, meaning "Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves (or Generations)," is believed to be compiled by the poet Ōtomo no Yakamochi sometime after AD 759 during the Nara Period. It contains over 4,000 poems, mostly tanka, that date before the end of the eighth century, and the writings are somewhat divided chronologically into four periods. Almost two centuries later, the Kokin waka shū or Kokinshū, meaning "Collection of Poems Ancient and Modern," was compiled under the imperial command of Emperor Daigo in AD 905 during the Heian Period by several well–known poets like Ki no Tsurayuki. In addition, the Kokinshū also contains the manajo, or Chinese preface, which served as a political statement to China about the recognition of Japanese poetry as its own. The Man'yōshū, on the other hand, though it had many concluding envoys for its poetry, did not have a preface written by its compilers or poets. The Man'yōshū and the Kokinshū also had different poetic forms, styles, and themes. While the majority of waka in both collections were tanka (short poems), the Man'yōshū contained much more chōka (long poems) and sedōka (head–repeated poems) than the Kokinshū, which only contained about ten of these altogether (Miner, 161, 163). By the time of the Kokinshū's compilation in the Heian Period, both chōka and sedōka had greatly decreased in popularity. In terms of style, the Man'yōshū portrayed makoto (sincerity) while the Kokinshū displayed miyabi (courtly refinement) (Varley, 60–61). For instance, in dealing with love, the ... • 20. Writing Skills And School Habits For me, writing has always been a challenge. I always felt like that I could not express myself with the words I had been taught or that somehow I had been left out on the instructions on how to properly write. It's always frustrated me that writing has been a challenge, and that may be why I enjoy reading so much because other people seem to have a way with words that I don't. I love reading other people's words a lot more than my own so much so that I tried avoiding writing as much as possible. Of course, school involves a lot of writing so it was not like I could permanently avoid it as much as I wish I could. So when my teacher announced that our class would be writing plays individually and turning them in to a theatre company, I was not at all excited. I was more like terrified about someone reading some trashy play I wrote. This moment in my life, however, changed my writing skills and school habits quite unexpectedly. The experience of writing my own play and having it performed was significant to me because it taught me about procrastination, hard work, and originality. 5th grade was like any other school year except that there were a lot more expectations and responsibilities to go along with it than the previous years, and Mrs. Schillinger definitely expected a lot from us, at least what I thought was a lot. "Class, today, I would like to announce a new writing assignment!" she exclaimed with a shining smile that it blinded the first row of kids. Moans ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. How Does Sam Ligon Create Novels? Sam Ligon, is a great writer. Not only is he able to create novels, but he has also written plenty of short–shorts. Most authors, they write with the voice they have and say everything they need to within their novels or stories. However, Ligon has something else to say. Novels are a way to dive in deep and really get into a story through a longer period of time. Short–shorts are nearly entirely different. They push you into the story within the first few sentences and just when you think the story couldn't get any more intense, it ends. Just like that, boom. Sam Ligon, says this, in his own words, basically so we understand not only the difference between them, but the difference an author must do to make a piece they truly think is complete. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I guess they just write another one and hope this ones better or turns out more successful. They write with such feeling and emotion, that sometimes you feel as if you're apart of the story too. When I write, I just want someone to read it. I put everything I have into a piece, everything I feel about that particular story, even if it's not a true story, there is still some aspect that comes from a personal experience. I love to write, as does Sam Ligon. Though I may not have the skills he has yet, I hope to have some close to his one day. Writing gives me a release, a way to say what I want, without actually saying a word because I can write it. The power he puts into his writing is simply extraordinary. For example, "The Bed You've Made," is written as though he was there. Or as if he was the one who was going through that. To combine a story and invert your own twist or personal tie to it is not an easy thing to do. So, with him being able to do that, he gives writing a whole new meaning. I believe that Sam Ligon was trying to say, it's not about what you write, or that you're really writing at all. It's about the fact that you took a chance that you didn't know if something would actually work out or not but you did it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I been a student at Colorado Christian University for about a year. One specific experiences that I'd recall, was when I had to write a letter to a co–worker. I thought I communicated well, however the feedback that I received told me the opposite. The co–worker told me that I had broken English in my writing. He told me that he was confused on what I was trying to explain. Even though what he said was true, I was upset. I didn 't realize then, that it was important for his feedback. I had taken many English courses, and it taught me that in order to become a writer, was to write. One way that helped me improve and overcome my weakness of writing was feedback from my professors and other students. The next step was to find ways to keep organized when I began to write. In spite of all my mistakes and weakness as a writer, communication was important through writing, because we have to use strong academic language to write. To point out that these are just a few I listed as a reflection on my writing skills. To begin with; I learned that feedback was important part of writing. I quickly change the way I view feedback. I used to think that I was being judged by others with their criticism. It helped me look at it as a tool of advices when I began to view it from another person perspective. The importance of feedback was to apply corrections that is needed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Writing Out Notes And Homework On A Computer With technology's new advancements, students are getting their homework done a lot sooner than they used to by writing their notes out on the computer instead of on paper. Is getting homework done faster worth having to study longer later? Writing out notes and homework by hand has more educational benefits than typing notes and homework on a computer. Various studies have proven that writing notes have a variety of benefits that exceed those of typing notes on a computer; retention rate, distractions, and higher grades. In an experiment done by Mueller and Oppenheimer, students were instructed to take notes, some students did so by hand, others by laptops. Afterwards, they were given a test on what they took notes on. Students who wrote ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The results were that those who took the standard class had considerably higher marks than those who took the hybrid class. Those in the hybrid course earned an average of only 69.2% while the students in the lecture earned an average of 77.9%. According to the researchers, "students in the hybrid course were less engaged with the material than those in the traditional section." (Adams) This is why they believe that those who took the standard class were more successful in earning better grades than the other students. In a different study by Robert Williams and Allan Eggert, "Notetaking aids one's ability to recall noted information and do well on exams related to that information." This is why it is so important for students to take notes in class. When you write out notes in class while the teacher is talking, you are forced to listen and summarize the key points of the lecture because writing notes are significantly slower than typing the notes. When students take notes on computers, they generally tend to type exactly what is being said instead of focusing on why it is important. When these students go back and read their notes, they don't have a decent conceptual understanding of what was written beforehand. COnsequently, these students need to spend more time studying to get the same results as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1894, construction neared completion on The Thomas Jefferson Building, the oldest of the three buildings which comprise the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.. With the exterior well in hand, the architects turned their attention to the interior, commissioning extensive murals by well– known artists. The commissioners of these murals deliberately set out to "personify the ideals of the [American] people" through the medium of government–sponsored art, and provide a relatively young nation with a story about themselves –– a visual "literature" which would connect them to the distant past.1 Among the most famous of these murals is Edwin Blashfield's The Evolution of Civilization which occupies the massive dome of the Main Reading Room; ... In spite of what painters, archeologists, or researchers of the nineteenth century believed about the ancient world, cuneiform has since proven its historical mettle. As displayed by Darius and his memorial at Bisitun, the early, crude cuneiform of 5000 B.C.E. adapted itself to culture after culture, and morphed into the dusty forerunner of our modern alphabet. The Phoenicians, the original ancient mariners, are responsible for transforming cuneiform into a more efficient writing system by paring down the somewhat ungainly number of 5,000 cuneiform characters into 29 characters. Adopted around 1000 B.C.E., the Phoenician alphabet was not a collection of pictographs like many early forms of writing, but instead a close relative of many modern writing systems.11 The sophisticated navy and extensive trade network of Phoenicia ensured that this new version of cuneiform would quickly spread to its ancient neighbors. Phoenicia's alphabet would soon be adopted by the Greeks, who also refined and perfected this writing system to meet their own needs; likewise the Romans, eager inheritors of all things Greek, adopted the alphabet for their own use. It could be said that the highly adaptive descendants of cuneiform formed the basis for the literature of the Classical world. The Phoenician cuneiform alphabet was also adopted by Jewish culture, providing a medium for Hebrew narrative and progressive sense of history, another innovation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Today, I am still in the kitchen and every chance I get, I cook. Some days it isn't even fancy or a hard recipe. Some days it's a classic, but something that I've created. Cooking is my time to be me. It's the "art form" I pride myself at being good at and I don't have to try (unlike drawing...not so good at that!). Like a child getting a new toy, I get excited when I discover new foods and ingredients. My mind feels "at home" when it's in the process of creating in the kitchen. It's fun getting the ingredients, piling them all on the counter, then chopping, stirring, adding a pinch of this and a splash of that. Then I have to wait for everything to cook. Finally the reward of my creativity is taken out of the oven and placed on a plate. The creative work I've done is fully realized when I can share my work with others. Cooking is pure joy and fun for me. I cook as a way to ground myself, to think clearly and to relax for a change. I enjoy researching ingredients I've never heard of before, what pairs best with this spice or that vegetable. When someone strikes up a conversation with me about cooking, I could go on for hours, so be prepared! Through cuts, burns, failed recipes, forgotten ingredients, I still find joy in the art of cooking. Losing this passion would surely be like losing myself. • 34. Hafu Essay Hafu is the term used in Japan to describe children of half–Japanese descent. This term is derived from the English " Half " which, when used in the Japanese language, indicates that a person is only half of the Japanese culture. According to " Hafu Japanese " the term Hafu originated in the 1970s and is now the most commonly used label for half–Japanese children (Hafu Japanese, 2010). Being called half might seem like an insult to some people, in Japan it is not really meant this way. In a YouTube video Japanese got asked about what image they have about Hafu, most of them answered that they wanted to be a Hafu as well. Almost all the answers to this question were positive; they are pretty, they have long legs, they have the best of both worlds. The majority of the Japanese seem to have positive views on what it is like to be a Hafu, but they might not have a proper understanding of what it is like to be Hafu. So despite the positive image the Japanese have, life in Japan is not easy for people with mixed roots (Views from the street on Hafu, 2010). Japan is a very homogenous country. The marks left on the clay by using the stylus had a wedge–shaped appearance which is how these images received the name of "cuneiform" meaning wedge–writing. The earliest known implementation of cuneiform to symbolize sounds produced by the Sumerian tongue show up on pieces of clay that are estimated to have been produced around the time of 3100BC. In my history as a writer any subject, assignment, or just writing that I have done that I enjoyed was exciting and fun to write. When composing papers on subjects I am interested in, writing becomes more enjoyable. Growing up, fooling around with writing was something I did for fun and I would write about being in the MLB. I started off by sitting on my twin bed, daydreaming about what it would be like to be a professional baseball player. The Yankees were the team I always dreamed of playing for, pinstripes looked great on me. When I thought of situations I would be in I had to write it down, this led to the beginning of my story. I sat down at my black desk with a pen and a composition notebook and began the create my version of a masterpiece. It felt like steam was coming out of my head because of my thoughts and my hand was moving as fast as wind in a hurricane. Writing this story gave me a rush as if I was actually playing in this game. Typography Typography, according to Preece and Wells, is the design or selection of letter forms to be organized into words and sentences for printing upon a page. Furthermore, the practice of typography goes beyond the creation of the type or the font. According to Preece and Wells, typography includes paper selection, the choice of ink to be used in printing, the printing method, and the binding process in cases where the printed material is a book. Although the use of typography became drastically more popular during the invention of the printing press in the mid– fifteenth century, the use of typography goes beyond this period in history. Before the invention of the concept of typography, writing was already a popular form of visual communication, the history of which dates to the use of hieroglyphs or pictograms in ancient times (Siebert). Per John Siebert, before the invention of the printing press which revolutionized the practice of typography, the alphabets, and phonographic writing, these ancient forms of writing were used by civilizations to express their ideas. The very first recorded examples of written communication were the ancient cave paintings dating back around 20,000 years; however, the first forms of formal writing were invented by the Sumerians around 3500 B.C (Siebert). • 44. The Pros And Cons Of Cultural Appropriation Cultural appropriation is a crime in 2017. The Kardashian family is constantly under criticism for cultural appropriation, as Khloé Kardashian has been accused of appropriating Native American headdresses, while Kylie Jenner has come under fire more than once for wearing cornrows. Kendall Jenner's Pepsi commercial, where she quelled a protest by offering a soda to a police officer, was lambasted as offensive and tone–deaf. These are the scenarios that the word "appropriation" brings to mind: privileged young women and cultural insensitivity. In "I Can't Stop Thinking through What Other People are Thinking", David Shields describes a wholly different cast of appropriators: artists, writers, and composers. In his essay, Shields unleashes his frustrations regarding the country's negative attitude towards appropriation and borrowing. He asserts that "there's no such thing as originality", that "all life on earth...is built upon appropriation and reuse of the pre–existing" (Shields 736). Shields utilizes a multitude of examples to illustrate and support his points. Musicians from Mozart to Bob Dylan have utilized content or taken inspiration from other artists. Shields shows that "borrowing has been with us from the beginning", citing the New Testament and Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra as "composites of numerous sources" (740). However, these thoughts quickly became reversed as the year progressed as I was pushed to limits I did not even know I had. As I began writing, I became more aware of my strengths and weakness, enjoyments and frustrations, and future plans and goals. After exploring all papers, there are strengths and weaknesses prevalent throughout. It is important to know these qualities and capacities in order to leverage certain strengths and improve specific weaknesses. Using this knowledge, I came up with one overall weaknesses throughout my writing that show up in multiple instances. One of them would be subject–verb agreement. Subjects and verbs must agree with one another in number (singular or plural). Thus, if a subject is singular, its verb must also be singular; if a subject is plural, its verb must also be plural. In the present tense, nouns and verbs form plurals in opposite ways: nouns add an s to the singular form; verbs remove the s from the singular form. It means saying all that needs to be said and no more. The aimless verbiage, unnecessary details and heavy paragraphs make our communication ridiculous and ineffective. We must omit those words and sentences from our message, which are not likely to bring about results. The message, which can be expressed in fewer words, is more impressive and effective than the same message expressed in a number of words. The communicator must organize his message in such a way that every word in it is meaningful and of interest to the receiver. Even a single word or a sentence, which does not contribute to accomplish the purpose of the communication, should be carefully omitted. • 52. The Ability Of Communicate Through Writing Summary of the project: The ability to communicate through writing has been imperative to meet various needs such as social, professional and academic needs (Mahendran, 2013). However, writing is a difficult and a complicated skill especially for students who are non–native of a particular language, which makes it hard for them to meet the writing needs in academic domains particularly. This difficulty is attributed to the fact that writing comes at last as a skill in terms of its acquirement for both native and second language speakers of the language (Hamp and Heasly, 2006). For the sake of facilitating the acquirement of this important skill, effective and new approaches to teaching are to be incorporated in the classroom practices. One of these approaches is Systemic Functional Linguistics, which views language as a set of systems, each of which offers people choices to express meanings (Bloor & Bloor, 1995). This project is two case studies of an EFL classroom that is based on Saudi Arabia with the intention of improving the academic writing concentrating on two persuasive genre writings, which are discussion and exposition genres. To do so, SFL is employed with its powerful analytical tools that are helpful in educational contexts. In particular, these analytical tools examine written language in the way sentences and clauses are organized as well as the way sentences are joined together to make a whole text (Coffin, 1996; Feez, 1998; Rothery, ... According to Schickendanz and Collins, scribbling is one of the primary forms of written expression for very young children. Scribbling is important because children learn to differentiate their scribbling from writing as they develop. Scribbling is the source of writing for young children. 9. What are the stages of scribbling? List and briefly describe each. Early scribbling or uncontrolled scribbling is when children make random marks on paper. Most children began early scribbling before their first birthday. It is also compared to babbling or baby talk. You can't read early scribbling. Instead of asking a child what the scribbling says or what is it, you should just encourage a child to keep scribbling. Controlled scribbling is when children began to make systematic marks that include circles, vertical lines, dots and squares. Most children began controlled scribbling between the ages of three and six. It is also called scribble writing. According to Harste, Woodard, and Burke the scribble reflects the children's native language. Scribble drawing is more pictographic in expression. • 62. Reflection Paper I originally saw poetry as a gargantuan chore of literacy. The idea in my cranium about poetry was, every poem or piece of writing had to be all about love or disgusting topics. But, junior year, that all changed with one student teacher. Ms. Evans changed my entire view of poetry and literature as a whole, she taught me how creative you can be with writing and books. Ironically, I fell in love with writing poetry about anything but love. I had teachers that abased my creativity, but alas, I prevailed. My early experiences with poetry were not really that joyful. I was not fond of poetry in the sense that, it was only focused on pleasant feeling and emotions. I wanted to write about death, murder, and sacrifice. My early English teacher, Ms. Trogdon was not fond of this idea, due to the fact she had no idea why a 15 year–old whom was generally very happy, wanted to write about such horrifying topics! I fumbled and faked my way through the poetry unit for 2 years I had with her. I mainly wrote to fit an outline or "Please the crown". Junior year began, and with a new, older, and mundane teacher I was expecting the same requirements when it came time to a poetry unit. It was almost as if I was trained to dodge some sort of creativity or taboo topic "bullets". But the revolutionary message came one day, "Class, I want you to meet a new student–teacher, Ms. Evans. She will be doing the poetry unit with you for the following 9 weeks with me supervising." The class was in shock ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 64. A Brief Note On The Causes And Solutions Dysgraphia: The Causes and Solutions Kelsey Swain Ashland University Take a moment to reflect on your day, how often do you find yourself writing. We live in a world that revolves around technology. If you think about it, we have email on our cell phones so we do not have to write letters, we have cars that can park themselves, and we even have televisions that are smarter than some human beings! Despite how much technology surrounds us, writing is something that will never go away. Written language is something we experience in every day life and it is something that is essential to daily activities. Whether or not we realize it, written language is present in all aspects of our lives. "The good and readable handwriting is another dimension that is necessary in developing society" (Rostami, p. 10). Although the written language is such a large part of our daily living, how we express this written language, spelling, is often overlooked. Rostami states, "handwriting is generally the storage of information. The data are written objectively and everyone can use it in every time and place. From the benefits of handwriting we can refer to the limited amount of data that human memory can hold and the unlimited amount of data that can be stored in written form. Thus, humans are not only able to learn the knowledge of their ancestors, but also they can use them to achieve new discoveries and new conclusions" (p.7). Although skilled handwriting is required for 30% ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. My Favorite Part Of Writing Writing is not my favorite thing to do at all, I tend to get distracted but at the same time I can not concentrate without them. Many of my of those distractions can be friends, background music, cell phones or music. My question for everyone is can distractions or the way you sit affect the way you write? For me I need movement around me when I am writing it helps me stay focused, I can't stand the silence. My writing process starts with me walking to the library after lunch. I tend to look for the biggest tables because I like to have a big space to have my papers and books. Also usually one of my friends joins me midway. After I am seated I take out my Hp with a ñ and turn it on. While it is turning on I usually get on my phone and look at my social media feed. Normally around me there are other students working in groups and having conversations. Libraries were never my favorite environment to do homework or write, this is because it is way too quiet. Just like Faris I enjoy being around conversations and movement. The conversations and movement helps me focus as well as inspire me. Most recently I discovered that the university has certain floors where people are allowed to talk and be in groups. In those floors is where I am usually at. I will rent a cubical and sit there and do my work. Normally my friends join me and we work together at the cubicles. Just like me my friends dislike the library for the same reasons. So we usually met up and do our work together. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The second reason is they achieved many things. The last reason is that they invented many things. Cuneiform The Sumerians were the most successful ancient civilization because they created the first written language. For example, without the Sumerians, we humans would not have the invention of writing. Their writing was called cuneiform. Cuneiform is when they took a stylus and imprinted writing on clay tablets. The Sumerians would sometimes also imprint on wax, stone, and metal. Cuneiform is considered the most significant among the many cultural contributions of the Sumerians. Cuneiform writing is traced back from c. 3500 – 3000 BC. The writing wasn 't first actually words. They used pictographs for writing in their records. Instead of writing letters "s–u–n", a Sumerian would imprint a pictograph of what they had as a sun on a clay tablet. Also, they used symbols that represented traded goods and livestock. The Sumerians used writing to keep records and to keep their stories. Before the actual writing on the clay tablets was created, the Sumerians originally had tokens. The tokens were items that represented words. They were kept safe together in a sealed clay envelope. The way the Sumerians knew what was in the envelope was that they press the tokens into the clay on the outside. The reason that they had the tokens in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. Advantages And Disadvantages And Disadvantages Of... What is communication? We often define communication as the act of talking to one another via different platforms, be it face to face, via emails or even through videos. Through this act, we are trying to pass a message or relate something to the intended audience. We face this every day in our lives, even if we do not leave the house and talk to anyone. For example, even reading a cooking recipe is counted as a form of communication. It is a form of communication between the reader and the writer. The reader is trying to comprehend and follow the steps given by the writer whereas the writer would be writing in a form whereby the steps is simple yet precise. So here are some advantages and disadvantages of ineffective communication. For advantages, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many people would know of this unfortunate incident, but not many would know that it was probably the cause of an ineffective communication. The incident goes as follows, In July of 1945, the allied leaders had a meeting in Potsdam and they submitted a stiffly–worded declaration of surrender terms to the Japanese. These terms had included a statement to the effect that any negative answer would invite "prompt and utter destruction." The allied leaders (Harry S Truman, Winston Churchill and Stalin) also stated that they hoped that Japan would agree to surrender unconditionally and prevent devastation of the Japanese homeland and that they patiently awaited Japan's answer. This was known as the Potsdam Declaration. The Japanese Premier at that time, Kantaro Suzuki answered using the Japanese word 'mokusatsu', which is derived from the word for 'silence'. Yet, this word had a second meaning which also means "not worthy of comment". In the heat of the moment, the meaning was thought to be the second one, which may be true as the Japanese were very prideful, as we can see from the Kamikaze spirit. To rather die than be captured. After the allied leaders knew of this reply, ten days later the atomic bomb was dropped at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. The Importance Of Technology In Education Part A Despite its importance, writing is not given enough attention in schools compare to reading. Since the turn of the 21st century, "there have been a number of significant changes in the contexts in which we teach and in which our students learn to write". Our culture has taken a digital shift in all aspects of life, including schooling and the way students are exposed to writing curriculum. Robinson, McKenna and Conradi state that "The context of schooling has also changed, with programs and practices affected most directly by an emphasis on standards and assessments as a part of a growing concern with accountability. Given a focus on reading, rather than writing or literacy more generally...this movement has had an impact on teaching and learning at all levels of public education" (Robinson, McKenna & Conradi, 2012, p. 243). In a digital world, it is no secret that technology has influenced the way students learn in schools. As referenced by Robinson, McKenna and Conradi, in 2005 Leu, an educational psychologist and professor, "reflected that the internet as well as evolving technologies are not technological issues but literacy issues" (Robinson, McKenna & Conradi, 2012, p. 266). I agree with Leu since I believe technology is a positive tool for student learning if used correctly, however, there is a difference between using technology to support learning and using technology to do the learning. Digital versions of printed text included hypermedia which allows readers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
