A Brief Note On The Race And Ethnicity
Race and ethnicity have always been a difficult topic to talk about, but not because I am
embarrassed, but because to this date I'm still confused. Most of the time I find myself confused and
asking questions such as, who am I? Where do I belong?
When I get asked about my race I always say Hispanic or Latina; I don't even know what I am. In
high school my Spanish teacher once told me that Hispanic and Latina is not the same thing.
Hispanics are individuals who are related to Spain and Latinos are individuals who are related to
Latin America. However, there is also Chicano/ Chicana, a person who is born in the U.S but their
parents were born in Mexico.
Society identifies me as Hispanic or Latina because I speak Spanish and by the way I look, they can
already know that I'm from Mexico, which I don't mind at all. I can also be classified as Chicana
because I' am a U.S citizen and my parents were born in Mexico, but I do have a problem with
being called Chicana. This is because of my past experiences, when I was called Chicana they
meant to call me a chola, a wetback, a gang member along with other names that disrespects who I
am. I have also been called pocha by friends or family members from Mexico because I was born in
the U.S and even though I come from Mexican parents I don't "act or speak like them". In Mexico
I'm not seen as Latina, Hispanic, Chicana or Mexican. For my Mexican relatives I'm just seen as an
"American" or as they would say a "pocha".

Gloria Anzaldúa's How To Tame A Wild Tongue
There are numerous personality tests that claim they are able to determine who a person is. While
taking these tests, most people feel they identify with more than one answer. However, since they
can only choose one answer, people think these tests are inaccurate and pointless. The personality
tests try to put people into boxes and subvert the complexity of a human being. This slight
frustration people obtain from these tests is how multiethnic people feel all the time. They do not
know whether they should be one ethnicity or the other, so they become lost in the stereotypes. In
the American society, multiethnic people continuously struggle psychologically to determine their
identity, to keep their cultural values, and to still call themselves ... Show more content on

In the beginning, Anzaldúa states, "My tongue keeps pushing out the wads of cotton, pushing back
the drills, the long thin needles. 'I've never seen anything as strong or as stubborn,' he says. And I
think, how do you tame a wild tongue, train it to be quiet, how do you bridle and saddle it?" (43).
When Anzaldúa decribes her tongue "pushing out the wads of cotton," she demonstrates how she
feels to be not be able to fully express her Chicana identity. Later, Anzaldúa states, "Ethnic identity
is twin skin to linguistic identity– I am my language. Until I can take pride in my language, I cannot
take pride in myself" (46). Anzaldúa uses the dentist trying to tame her "stubborn" tongue to
compare to how in American society, she is told to be quiet and not use her Chicano language,
which Anzaldúa identifies herself as her language. As a result of this limitation in society, Anzaldúa
realizes that she does not want to compliant and to "tame a wild tongue [and] train it to be quiet."
She does not want to have to change how she speaks to cater English or Spanish speakers. Anzaldúa
wants to be able to express her identity through her language. Towards the end, Anzaldúa also states,
"I have so internalized the borderline conflict that sometimes I feel like one cancels out the other
and we are zero, nothing, no one" (49). While Anzaldúa feels she lives with two identities in the
United States, she finds that switching from identity to identity results in the identities canceling
out. Then, she becomes nothing. The complexity of discovering oneself in a uniform society causes
a person to feel lost. Anzaldúa can no longer stay quiet about this struggle as

Essay about Race and Ethnicity in Social Sciences
Use of the Terms "Race" and "Ethnicity" in the Social Sciences
Defining identity can be complex and therefore we have to investigate the factors involved that
make us who we are and how we are seen by others, collectively or individually. Social scientists
have to consider the key elements which shape identity, the importance of social structures and
agency involved. The differences and/or similarities between us are the focus that categorise and
label us in society. Knowing who we are is important for many reasons including, social rights,
obtaining a passport, housing, health, employment, marriage, and over all, being able to ascertain
who we are, and belong.
The terms 'race' and 'ethnicity' are central features in the process of ... Show more content on

These subgroup identities highlight the relational factors which exist in categorising identity, each
requiring the other in order to make the comparison between ethnic differences, power and status.
Racialization and Ethnicization are preferred concepts as they contribute more to the idea that the
identities we adopt are part of a process and are not static, referring to a dynamic process rather than
a fixed state.
Categorisations from the 1970's onwards, such as the definition of 'black' or 'white', were too vague,
and failed to recognise the specific needs of other ethnic minorities. In order to monitor and measure
statistically the discrimination and underachievement of such groups, collecting 'ethnic' statistics in
relation to 'race' and 'ethnicity' was necessary and these can be found in official government
censuses. Over the years it became apparent that categorisation of ethnic groups in the censuses
rendered some groups 'invisible' (Questioning Identity, ch 4, p 137, section 4.1.1), for example Irish
and Welsh. The category of 'white' has had to be expanded into subcategories as the 'white' grouping
classification remained singular within the censuses until 2001, and ethnicization of 'whites' was too
generalised. ("Questioning Identity: Kath Woodward ch.4 p138 – Office of Population Censuses and
Surveys, 1991) These amendments show us that there have been changes in ethnic representation
and that there is more awareness regarding ethnic identities and

1. Compare and contrast the primordialist with the instrumentalist/circumstantialist approaches that
provide an understanding of the concept of Ethnicity? What is the constructionist perspective?
According to constructionism, how do the elites view ethnicity? (Use Introduction from Hutchinson
and Smith book Ethnicity and the excerpt of chapters from Cornell and Hartmann that will be posted
on blackboard. NB: I used Cornell and Hartmann's book Ethnicity and Race for my class lecture on
approaches to ethnicity.)
In Ethnicity by John Hutchinson and Anthony Smith identify two existing camps of ethnicity:
primordialist and instrumentalist/circumstantialist. The term 'priomordialist' in terms of ethnicity
was fathered by Edward Shils, a notable sociologist. Shils sought to differentiate various social
bonds–personal, primordial, sacred and civil ties and to demonstrate how even in contemporary,
civic societies other types of social bonding existed (Hutchinson and Smith ). After Shils coined the
concept of primordialist, late anthropologist, Clifford Greetz advanced the subject and spoke of the
'overpowering' and ineffable quality attaching to certain kinds of tie, which the participants tended
to see as exterior, coercive, and given. Greetz further emphasized that the catalyst to an effective
and successful modern state is the drive for personal identity–a fundamental basis of primordial ties.

Rhetorical Analysis of "Cultural Baggage" Essay

Rhetorical Analysis In Barbara Ehrenreich's Cultural baggage, the topic of ethnic heritage is
discussed as the author is responding to an acquaintance asking her what her ethnic background is.
Ehrenreich finds her purpose for writing her essay in making readers aware that no ethnic
background is in fact a background. She takes on a not so common viewpoint of herself as most
people pride themselves in where they came from and the traditions of their culture, rather than
feeling almost embarrassed to claim their background. Ehrenreich claims that she has no ethnic
background, disregarding her Scottish, English, and Irish heritage. While others "stand up and

Ehrenreich was finally able to feel a sense of pride knowing that "the race of 'none' marches on."
The author wrote her essay including several references to certain traditions that different cultures
practice. The audience is assumed to have some general knowledge of different cultures, but nothing
to extensive. The author also assumes that the audience is somewhat well educated due to the
higher–level word choices she makes. Ehrenreich is describing her realization of heritage to her
audience in the possible hopes that the readers can either relate in some way or share some of the
excitement that she does in her own ethnicity, or lack of. Ehrenreich was able to make her point that
she does in fact have an ethnicity other than Scottish, English and Irish. It was intriguing to see the
progression in the essay from the authors feeling of disconnect with her heritage to a sense of pride
in her family that refrains from carrying on cultural activities. She recognizes where she came from
and concludes that no tradition is a tradition, rather than trying to

Latino Ethnicity And Ethnicity
Every ethnic group is important into how we understand each other. With this being said, I find it
particularly interesting about the creation of the Latino population. As a short background the Latino
population was created through three specific ethnic groups. Africans, white europeans and the
indigenous population of the Caribbean. I plan on examining the Latino population by discovering
their group identity and critiquing their political engagement and influence through three different
theoretical perspectives. These theoretical ideas are those of a primordialist, instrumentalist, and
constructivists viewpoints in order to help understand more about the Latino population when it
comes to ethnicity as whole. One of the biggest ideologies that goes behind ethnic politics or group
identity, is from a primordialist perspective. The core belief of primordialism is best defined as,
"ethnic and national identity (nationalism) are derived from human nature. Therefore, these ideas
are biologically constructed by humans and that they are fixed or given"(Theories of
Ethnicity/Nationalism 10). Now, if we apply this to the origin of the Latino population, this concept
would simply state that Latinos have been biologically constructed and that every form of Latino is
fixed or given. However, in order to understand, we must realize the birth of the Latino population.
The Latinos are a byproduct of the combination of all of thee cultures intermarrying and producing
offspring. With this being said, there has been much conflict between the national identity of what
makes a Latino a Latino. As stated in the article titled "Theories of Ethnicity and Nationalism" the
author examines this conflict as, "ethnic tensions and diversity are natural.. Ethnic identity and
ethnic consciousness are percieved of favorable groups...in other words these are generated
independently" (Theories of Ethnicity/Nationalism 10). This examination directly to how various
groups of Latinos view each other. There are certain groups such as Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, and
Mexicans that believe that one group is superior to one another. When in fact, they are all apart of
one overarching main ethnic groups. Conflict will always continue to rise when

Race, Ethnicity And Ethnicity
I would like to discuss the issue of race and ethnicity in sports. We will also explore the bigger
questions. How much does race and ethnicity matter in the sports world? Are certain races dominant
in certain sports? Is there a difference in how we treat players based on race and ethnicity? Does it
matter? I would like to answer some of these questions and gain a better understanding of how
much of a part they play.
Introduction Race and ethnicity in sports is a very delicate subject. You run a great risk of offending
someone when discussing the subject to begin with. Is one race dominant in a certain sport? I think
we need to address this with respect and delicacy. But when we look at the need to be so delicate,
that should be an indication that race and ethnicity matter with regards to sports.
Gender, Race, and Ethnicity and Sports When we look at the sports world, there is no doubt that
some races dominate certain sports. Numerically speaking. If we look statistically, approximately 70
percent of NFL and approximately 76 percent of the NBA players are African American. We can
also look elsewhere, such as NHL hockey. As of 2015 approximately 50 of all players were
Canadian. We can see finite numbers that give us an indication where one demographic is larger
than another. By looking at the percentages and numbers in each sport we know what we see, but
does it matter to us as a society? There are some people that say that the numbers have changed

Ethnicity And Its Impact On Development Essay
Ethnicity has always been seen as a factor that helped bring people in a certain community together.
In earlier years, ethnicity was nothing more than just identity that people were proud of. However
times have changed and the silver lining that was in ethnicity has begun to fade and in some areas, it
has completed ceased to exist. Today, ethnic ambitions have continuously replaced the patriotism of
people to a nation further dividing their loyalties to their nation (Manyasa, 2005:69). Tribal
orientations and ethnic labels have taken over in most of African states. In such cases, a person is
first loyal to their ethnic group and then second comes the nation. This is a scenario that has been
seen to impact on development. That is to say, both negative and positive ethnicity has an effect on
development. Unfortunately, negative ethnicity tends to be more pronounced. As it is well known,
development is a multi–faceted process that can be hampered by several factors.
Development in any society is meant to positively impact the lives of the people through advancing
in terms of social and economic status. Ideally development brings about opportunities for the
people but when these opportunities are hindered due to the fact that one belongs to a certain ethnic
group, then development is blocked. Existence of various ethnic groups in a country does not
necessarily mean conflicts, but when competition among these groups arises, then conflict is
inevitable (Alemayehu, 2009). In

Banana Workers, ethnologist Philippe Bourgois argues that there are new approaches in the analysis
of ethnicity and the conflicts between class and power that occur within it. Thus, the discussion of
the relationship between ethnicity and class, a debate on the discernment of ideology and material
reality, is increasingly present. He also asserts that by accepting a definition of ideology as a belief
system present in power relations, then ethnicity is socially important as a form of ideological
expression. Ideology as part of "material reality" in conjunction with political processes are also
components of obtaining "class consciousness". The author stated: ... Show more content on

The Guaymi and The Kuna as Unit Fruit Company workers
Both the Guaymi and the Kuna became members of the United Fruit Company in the province of
Bocas del Toro in the early 1950s, and even though they came from more or less similar economic
spheres, their political structures differed very much in the community context and in their relations
to the corporate entities. The result is a profoundly different experience of economic exploitation
and ideological domination. The oppression of the Guaymi, says Bourgois, is different in
comparison to the Kuna, the Guaymi endure what he calls a "conjugated" oppression.
"Conjugated oppression occurs when an economic structure...conflates with ideology...to create an
experience of oppression that is more than merely the sum of its constituent parts: class and
ideology."[footnoteRef:3] [3: Ibid. 330]

Race, Ethnicity, Art and Film Essay
This paper tries to analyze race relations, ethnicity and how art and film relates to these social issues
in their cultural context. Art and film have played vital roles in advocating for a society free of
ethnicity and racism. Using vivid descriptions and evidence of both text and a movie this paper
seeks to relate accordingly the concerned issues and factors affecting these social vices. It will
demonstrate race and ethnic tendencies in diverse cultural contexts.
As a demographic phenomenon, ethnicity is belonging to a specific ethnic group possessing distinct
culture and common origin. This is called inscriptive group identity. According to Said Edward

The colonial state activated heightened and enlarged ethnicity in a variety of ways. They brought
about a diverse wider group of interaction into competition, the colonies and the administrative
union started localizing administration. They started strengthening and enlarging ethnic allegiances
which increased ethnic tensions. In addition, they actively promoted preferential treatment of ethnic
groups as a matter of policy by establishing systems of collaboration.
Social Darwinism is a socialist theory that tries to understand the reason behind colonization and
other social vices like ethnicity. It was used to justify numerous exploits which we classify as
dubious moral values today. For instance doctors were responsible for assisting to die. Social
Darwinism states that people especially colonizers failed to justify the reason why they forcefully
seized land and resources from weaker natives. This is also illustrated in the military affairs where
the strongest military will win. The application of social Darwinism has since provided the
justification for more exploitative forms of social capitalism where workers are usually paid less and
yet they have worked for many hours.
It also tries to explain the reasoning behind slavery and colonization. However, not all social
Darwinism is negative. There are positive results of social Darwinism.

Educational Institution Effects on Race and Ethnicity
EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION EFFECTS ON RACE & ETHNICITY
Race and ethnicity are usually used interchangeably, however they are not same. Ethnicity is
described by the group on the basis of family history, national foundation, and forefathers. Ethnicity
cannot transform, although elements of a particular ethnic group's community can transform. Race
is a term that attempts to categorize human beings into distinct groups by their Phenotypes
according to skin color, eye color, etc. All over the history, race has been usually used as a social,
cultural, and biological establishment. (Taylor and Whittaker 233). The prospect of Race changes
with time and remains to be difficult to explain as our recent understanding of biological research
fails to support the concept that there are significant biological variances between Races. In the
United States there is huge variation in terms of Race and Ethnicity, and different ethnic, racial, and
cultural framework of the United States is well maintained. 2000 Census data show many swings to
a more culturally and linguistically mixed society (Hobbs and Stoops 7).
In the United States out of every four people one is from a different ethnic background other than
white. These progressions are reflected in population of schools. Moreover, 2000 census data show
that there are around 1% Indian/Alaskan Native students, 4% Asian/Pacific Islander students, 16%
black (non–Hispanic) students, 15% Hispanic students, and 63% white (non–Hispanic) students

Is Tribal Identification Is The Most Socially Salient...
Coethinicity argues that tribal identification is the most socially salient identity in Kampala,
Uganda. Based on a series of experiments, the authors of Coethnicity found that homogenous ethnic
identity was crucial to the pursuit of the common good based on the shared ethnic norm of
reciprocity. Contrary to this idea, I will argue that this assumption is empirically questionable and
ultimately unhelpful in the broader quest to understand how "ethnicity" and politics relate because
there are other factors involved that Coethnicity does not take into account. Before expanding on
this idea I will first offer a deeper account into Coethnicity's findings. Next, I will develop my
argument using the ideas of Burbanker, Bates, and Posner. With these accounts I will demonstrate
Coethnicity over simplifies politics in Africa and there other factors that should be considered like
motivation and other external factors.
Co–ethnicty begins by developing the assumption that ethnic diversity provides the explanation for
failures of cooperation from members of different communities. Failures like, failing to launch
initiatives to fight crime, collect garbage, and maintain drainage channels in the Mulago–Kyebando
ethnically diverse communities. The book takes this idea as given and then goes forth to explain that
Coethnics are more likely to cooperate as demonstrated through a variety of experimental games,
such as the prisoner's dilemma, in Kampala, Uganda (19). Ultimately their results

Ethnicity : The Cause And Causes Of Conflict In Nigeria
Ethnicity is how individuals perceive themselves, and unlike race it can be changed. There are
countries in which there are several different types of ethnic groups, and in some cases that could
lead to conflict within a country, but as research will show it is not the only cause, and in some cases
the conflict was purposely organized. In such cases it is usually in a developing country, which is
"defined according to their Gross National Income (GNI) per capita per year. Countries with GNI of
US$ 11,905 and less and less are defined as developing (specified by the World Bank, 2012)."
(CITATION) Developing countries that have established themselves as democracies tend to have
weak institutions, where elections are more about connections and winning, rather than trying to
establish and follow formal rules. Nigeria is both, a developing country and one with a weak
democracy, there are many causes to this, such as problems with natural resources, and unable to
maintain a strong formal government, but mainly it all could be traced back to the fact that it has a
divided society where there is no sense of nationality. Divergence in a country does not mean
violence, in the contrary in most cases places with a lot of different ethnicities tend to be peaceful,
but Nigeria is exempt from this because it was, in a sense, programmed for all the different
ethnicities and religions to have conflict amongst each other by the British.

Is Dining A Good Chance?
In college, does dining with only members of one's ethnicity and participating in ethic
organizations/activities decline ethnic relations on campus? On one hand, only dining with one's
ethic group segregates the campus by race. Also, participating in ethnic organizations and activities
could make people of different ethnicities feel segregated or left out. On the other hand dining by
ethnic background could just be people hanging out with whom they enjoy to be around or relate to.
Further more, participating in ethnic activities and organizations could spread awareness of different
cultures and give other ethnicities the chance to interact and learn about each other. In college
people tend t sit with their friends when eating. Depending on where people are from, they may only
be used to interacting with one ethnicity. This means when they arrive at college they are more
likely to be drawn to people of that ethnicity. So in the dinning hall at any university there is a good
chance there is some segregation of ethnicity. This means there is less interaction and relations
going on between different ethnicities. As college get further into the school years, it will become
less likely that students will break these patterns. This is because bonds and friendships have been
made. Adding to this is ethnic organizations and activities at the school. While all of these
organizations are open to people of any ethnicity, many people of the other ethnicities feel

Sociology : Race And Ethnicity
Race and ethnicity are commonly used as synonyms for each other as we encounter many diverse
individuals throughout the world. Sociologist on the other hand, find very distinct understandings to
how these terms, while different, hold correlation to one another. Max Weber, a founding figure of
sociology, was one of the first to define race and ethnicity. He stood with the idea of essentialism
which presumes "that and individual 's identity depends on fundamental and innate characteristics
that are deep–seated, inherited, and unchangeable." (Pearson, pg 241) As for ethnicity, Weber
described it as subjective belief in relations to a groups common descent. While sociologist today
may disagree with Weber 's theory, they do apply this idea of subjectivity and have correlated it to
that of not only group definitions but of our own perceptions of biological similarity.
If you would have asked me, "Do you believe race is biological or that is was socially constructed?",
I would have responded with the same examples you may commonly receive from scientist or
anthropologist; that race is in fact biological and deeply rooted and shared from generation to
generation by DNA. However, through analyzing Pearson 's, Chapter 11 Race & Ethnicity we
discover various examples in which history has built the shelves in which everyone is neatly
categorized for its convenience even if not entirely in truth.
Take for example white privilege. For most of the United States history, it was basically

Race, Ethnicity, And Ethnicity
Most people in our society believe the common misconception that race and ethnicity are
synonymous. Race and ethnicity are related, but are not equivalent. Race by definition means "a
socially constructed category of people who share a biologically transmitted trait that members of
society consider important" (Macionis 296). Ethnicity by definition means "a shared cultural
heritage" (Macionis 298). In shorter terms, race is social physical appearance, while ethnicity is the
cultural aspect. Social conflation of these two terms is important to me because society often
mistakes ethnicity and race for the other or just considers it as one. This is relevant to me because I
have dealt with this issue has come up quite a few times in my life. Racially and socially, I appear to
be a "White" or "Caucasian" female, but ethnically I am Mexican and this is relevant because of the
confusion between Race and Ethnicity people do not understand or are confused. People usually are
a bit confused or shocked when they hear this. Their response is always somewhere along the lines
of "You can't be Mexican. You're white." or "But you're white." I may not "look" Mexican because I
do not have dark hair or skin, but I am Mexican: my mother is from Mexico, and we visit when we

ARTICLE THREE: USEFULNESS OF ETHNICITY IN INTERNATIONAL CONSUMER
MARKETING Internationalization is the term that can characterize the current state of the
consumer market in many parts of the world (Dillard, p. 25). The world of business has evolved into
a market where there are accommodations necessary to appeal to a larger market and gain a larger
market share. Identifying the ethnic identity of a target market can help with the promotion status
and product design for mass distribution. This study will examine the implications in identifying the
ethnic identity of Latino and Asian consumers in the apparel and retail industry. Research Question
There have been previous studies in the past that have affirmed that ethnic identity contributes to the
decision marking of Latino and Asian consumers. The first two hypotheses are taking that same
logic and cross applying the methods to the cultures' reactions to apparel shopping orientation and
retail format preferences. The last four hypotheses are comparing the outcomes between strong and
weak members of each ethnicity. It is assumed by past studies that strongly identified individuals
stay with tradition and will follow the ways of their ancestors, whereas weakly identified individuals
will likely conform to the new customs of the current place of occupancy and assimilate to the
standard of living. There are six hypotheses presented in the research: H1: Latino and Asian
consumers will show differences in their appeal

An Ethnicity is socially defined group or category of people who identify between each other based
upon common ancestral, cultural and social experience. Membership of these ethnic groups are
defined by a shared cultural heritage, myth of origins, ancestry, language, dressing style, physical
appearance, etc.
At present ethnic groups may comprise of millions of people or it may only be a groups of dozens.
For example now a day's Chinese are the largest group of ethnicity present in the world. It is
common to divide larger groups of ethnicity into smaller groups usually known as tribes or clans.

Cultural Background Of Hispanic Ethnicity
People of Hispanic origin have already made their presence felt in various fields of human endeavor
in the United States. Whether it is their involvement in politics, corporate management or even
sports, Hispanics have showed that they have what it takes to perform at par with any other racial
group. When it comes to the involvement of a particular minority in any activity there are bound to
be certain issues. This paper will explore the themes of sporting identities to analyze the experiences
of Latino males in sport. An attempt will be made to understand the barriers and prejudices that
Latino males have had to encounter in the field of sports in the United States of America.
Latinos have managed to make a profound impact in the field of American sports. Their interest in
sports helped them assimilate themselves into American mainstream culture. They were also able to
maintain their entire families' ethnic identity at the same time. Since they had limited economic
opportunities and had to face racial discrimination they were able to use sports as a refuge from the
grim realities of the society. They used the field of sports to negotiate race relations, nationalism and
citizenship. Sport was an arena that they could use to learn how to behave according to societal
gender norms. Even for female athletes sports arenas provided the space to achieve gender equality,
something that could never be achieved outside the field of sports (Alamillo, n.d).

Race And Ethnicity
Race and ethnicity are two terms which are crucial in understanding a person's familial and personal
identity. These terms are misunderstood by most Americans, and many do not know the difference.
There have been major societal implications to the changing populations of groups of race and
ethnicity in the US. Minority groups and immigrants have struggled with discrimination, poverty
and other issues partly due to historical impacts such as slavery and segregation. Economical and
political oppression has had a strong effect on the structure of Black families in the US, leading
many families to an "extended household" structure. Latino families tend to exhibit familism, which
may have slowed their integration into American life, but may have also helped their growth in the
US. Race and ethnicity are two different terms which are often confused. Neither race nor ethnicity
are biologically classifiable, and are truly socially identifiable classifications. As defined by Cohen
(2015:75) race is "a group of people believed to share common descent, based on perceived innate
physical similarities." Cohen (2015:79) defines ethnicity as "a group of people with a common
cultural identification, based on a combination of language, religion, ancestral origin, or traditional
practices." Finally, Cohen (2015:79) defines racial ethnicity as "an ethnic group perceived to share
physical characteristics." Race, then, is more focused on relation of physical similarities, while

Ethnicity And Ethnicity Essay
This essay will be discussing the correlation between ethnicity and educational attainment. Whether
your race affects your life chances or if other factors are involved as well. It will be looking at
different ethnic minorities and how well they are doing in school.
Although most schools are seen as multicultural, you can see clear differences between ethnic
minorities. Statistics show that clearly some ethnicities are doing poorer than others. At the moment
Black Caribbean boys are achieving the least amount of GCSE A*–C grades whereas more than
50% of Chinese girls are achieving the most GCSE's. There are many factors as to why some
ethnicities do better than others. Ethnicity can have a major affect on your achievement but other
things like– social class, gender and location can also play a part in how well you do.
Success or failure can be influenced by what happens within the school and classroom. If teachers
have low expectations of an ethnic minority it may affect the actual progress of a pupil. This is
known as the self fulfilling prophecy. If a teacher labels most Bangladeshi boys as 'not very bright
and able'. The teacher has labeled the group and made a prediction about them. Because the teacher
has low expectation, he/she will except below average homework. Also teachers will not encourage

Ethnicity And Ethnicity
The wealth gap has consistently been at the forefront of the economic disparity conversation. Ethnic
background continues to play a role in the amount of wealth in a given household. Studies show that
minorities accumulate wealth at an substantially lower rate than Caucasians. A twenty–five–year
longitudinal study by Brandeis University discovered that, "The median wealth of white families
has shot up precipitously since 1984, while the median wealth of black families has barely moved,"
(Resnikoff, 2011) This research will address the question as to whether ethnicity truly plays a role in
the amount of wealth a group can accumulate because of factors such as homeownership, college
education, and unemployment. The null hypothesis would state that wealth accumulation is highly
correlated with race, education, homeownership and income. Whereas the alternative hypothesis
would state that wealth accumulation is not correlated with the above–mentioned variables. In order
to develop a theoretical framework for this project, a literature review of scholarly journal articles
relevant to the topic and causes being addressed, was completed. Studies that have already been
conducted on the causes and previous Census reports were used to support my hypothesis. Wealth is
defined simply as an individual's reportable assets minus debt. Wealth focuses on the monetary
value of something. However, the term wealth transcends over a variety of different disciplines. For

Race and Ethnicity According to Anthropologists Essay
Race and Ethnicity According to Anthropologists Examining the ideas and beliefs within ones own
cultural context is central to the study of Anthropology. Issues of Race and Ethnicity dominate the
academic discourses of various disciplines including the field of Anthropology. Race and Ethnicity
are controversial terms that are defined and used by people in many different ways. This essay shall
explore the ways in which Anthropologists make a distinction between race and ethnicity and how
these distinctions serve as frames for cross–cultural comparison and analysis. It is important to
accurately define these coined terms before one is able to make accurate comparisons and
distinctions between them, and their relation to the concept of ... Show more content on

The concept of race and the meanings associated with the term have continuously changed and
evolved throughout history. Many negative connotations have been associated with the word race
and these are evident as one reflects on the historical origins of the term. Commonly the term race is
closely connected to the notion of 'racism.' Racism is a specific form of prejudice which focuses on
physical variations between people. It describes the ideological belief that a person, or groups of
people can be classified into 'races' which can be ranked in terms of superiority and inferiority
(Spoonley, 1988:4). Giddens defines racism as "the attribution of characteristics of superiority or
inferiority to a population sharing certain physically inherited characteristics" (1997:584). This
supports the idea that racism is a manner of prejudice or animosity against people who have
different physical characteristics. It is in virtue of circumstances such as these that Anthropologists
find it necessary to make a distinction between the concepts of race and ethnicity. In contrast to the
idea of race, Ethnicity refers to ethnic affiliation, or the "cultural practices and outlooks of a given
community of people that set them apart from others" (Giddens, 1997:210). Members of a particular
ethnic group see themselves as culturally distinct from other groups of people in a society or culture.
There are different characteristics which serve as a way of

Reflection On Race And Ethnicity
I am creative, short, determined, competitive, and a dyslexic Hispanic female. Society has shown us
that a large part of who we are in the United States focuses on our ethnicity and race. For every
important document, we have to fill out a form asking us about our race/ethnicity. We can say that
we are one race but we actually all are multiple races. Growing up I knew that I was Hispanic but I
really didn't feel like I was treated differently. I feel like because I had the lighter skin I was not
viewed necessarily as a Mexican. There were a few times that I was made fun of for being Hispanic,
the largest problem that I faced was people thinking that I spoke Spanish. On My mother's side, I am
6th generation Coloradan with ties to México and on my father's side, I am a third generation
American with ties to Spain and México. Defining yourself can always be a struggle because not
everyone defines you the way that you define yourself. Growing up my family told me stories about
how they were made fun of or picked on because of their skin color and the fact that they spoke
Spanish. My grandfather started a roofing company in North Denver as he worked more and made
more money he moved to the Italian part of town where my mother and her siblings were called
coconuts and Oreos because they were dark on the outside but they acted differently compared to
other Hispanics. My grandmother told me about how people would tell her not to speak Spanish
because she was an American and that she was in America so she needed to speak English. This was
difficult for Hispanic people because they were having to lose part of their culture and part of their
identity. My grandmother always would tell me about how it was harder for her to attend school
because she would get into trouble if she acted differently. My grandmother on my father's side of
the family had a more sheltered life where she was not racially discriminated against because she
was part of the Spanish consulate. She always told us about the cool places she would go to because
of her father's job. It was interesting learning that she was born in Japan while her sister was born in
France. Growing up she never needed to help around the house or have a job because

The Importance Of Race And Ethnicities
I claim that the functionality of the world relies heavily on race and ethnicity to make assumptions
on individuals, leading to the continuation of stereotypes. However, while this is all true, people are
confusing race with ethnicity causing assumptions to be even more unfair. The lifestyle of an
individual is what defines them not the genetics that define their appearance. In Olson's "The End of
Race: Hawaii and the Mixing of Peoples," he discusses how stereotypes and discrimination exist
due to different backgrounds and culture not by race which is evident in Hawaii in which most of
the population is mixed and have had cultures blend into one coherent culture that everyone accepts.
Eventually it'll reach to a point where we will not see an individual as a race with distinct traits that
can be categorized but instead as a person with individuality. Moreover In "Paper Tigers," writer
Wesley Yang believes that Asians have been raised in certain ways that have made them successful
throughout school but has also simultaneously crippled them in the job market and much like the
Glass Ceiling, Asians have inherited a Bamboo Ceiling thus stating that ethnic background has an
effect with the success that one experiences through life. Both authors claim that ethnicity, not race
is the cause of stereotypes and inequality.
To elaborate, in education, hierarchies are evident across the nation. It is always a competition to see
who gets the best grades, excel at standardized tests,

Multiculturalism Is The Preservation Of Different Cultures...
Multiculturalism is the preservation of different cultures or cultural identities within a unified
society, as a state or nation (Dictionary.com, 2013). Canada is a country full of many different
ethnicities and cultures, but even though Canada is housing them, it's just not working. Problems in
multiculturalism are most prominent in three areas, the communities, the schools and the workforce.
Multiculturalism in the communities are facing struggle because of the cities' appeal to new
immigrants and because of the segregation in ethnic enclaves. Multiculturalism in the schools is
evident when unfair religious accommodations are made and when schools are stereotyped based on
the racial majority. The workforce faces problems in multiculturalism because of the employers
employing visible minorities which creates segregation and because many immigrants' credentials
are being looked over and given worse positions. Multiculturalism is not working in Canada based
on the discrimination, stereotypes and segregation evident in the communities, schools and the
workforce. Canada accepts roughly 250,000 immigrants each year (Press, 2008), yet over half of the
immigrants choose to live in one of Canada's three major cities; Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.
Studies found that people from the Middle East and Asia are more likely to live in urban areas while
people from Europe are more likely to live in rural areas. This raises many problems, since the top 3

The Importance Of Race And Ethnicity
Have you at any point run over one of this inquiry, similar to "What is your race/ethnicity?" If so
have you ask why. Race could be one of those words that gap us, it recognizes us from each other.
Race is the way we classify individuals into gatherings this depends on our physical or social even
social characteristics, family, and hereditary qualities. race and ethnicity play a urgent part in our
lives, yet Is race the way your conceived or basically the way other individuals see you. Groups
worked around racial and ethnic identity can regularly offer interior sources of resilience. Be that as
it may, these parts of our character may likewise have unfavorable social ramifications, by
impacting our odds of accepting quality restorative care, landing a position offer or a credit, or being
wrongly halted by the police. In spite of the social essentialness of race, the groups of basic physical
qualities and the names we use to portray it can change enormously after some time. Ethnicity, in
the interim, may compare with social practices, for example, the nourishments we appreciate, the
dialects we talk, and how we adore.
In "Stranger in the Town" by James Baldwin, and in "Who shot Johnny" by Debra Dickerson, these
creators can both concur in the idea of race being a supposition about somebody for what they look
like from shade of skin to culture. In the start of "Stranger in the Town" James Baldwin discusses
being recognized and separated in a little town situated in Europe,

The Importance Of Ethnicity In Schools
Teaching students about their ethnicity or even others should be enforced by the Board of Education
directors in high schools. American School Boards should mandate a curriculum that provides
multicultural and ethnic studies programs for their students. This allows our American youth to have
a wider perspective on human interaction and historical events that lead to world we currently live
in. More specifically, in American history, it provides a foundational understanding of the numerous
ethnic backgrounds that help shape this country into a pillar of freedom for the world to see.
America was built by people from all over the globe and this historical fact is the primary reason our
educational programs should include an understanding of all the cultures that played a role in its
success.
As a child I gained limited knowledge about other ethnicities, including from my own through
family and small circles of friends. Now that I'm in college I'm embarrassed by the fact that I know
so little about my own ethnic background as well as others. It's one matter to not know much about
other ethnic groups, but to not know about my own makes me feel like I'm letting myself down.
Schools are meant to teach kids things they will need to know for in the future such as math,
reading, writing, science, and history. So, if ethnic studies teaches kids race, ethnicity, nation,
gender and sexuality, isn't that something kids will need to know more about in the future. Leaning

The Importance Of Race And Ethnicity
In today's society it seems to be believed that all racial conflicts or issues have been resolved, yet
unfortunately, this could not be any further from the truth. Issues stemming from how people view
different races and ethnicities continue to be so prevalent in this modern world. Judgement and
prejudices cloud people's minds and that does not allow them to really comprehend that race and
ethnicity are only one feature of a person. First of all, in order to fully grasp the idea and effects that
race and ethnicity play into a human being, it is important to know what these two words really
mean. In the book, Social Problems: Community, Policy, and Social Action, race is defined as a
population that shares a set of genetic traits or physical features, and ethnic groups are defined as
groups of people who display a set of cultural traits such as language, religion, or diet (Leon–
Guerrero, p.65). Now understanding what the race and ethnicity of a person means, the next step
should be to understand that these factors should not play into any consideration for any judgement
since they are only one part of a person. Unfortunately, people who are part of the race minorities
tend to fall into scrutiny by a society that does not fully comprehend this. This has led to negative
mindsets and many forms of discrimination in different types of environments. Ultimately, the race
and ethnicity of an individual will play a factor in the success of that person by affecting the type

The World War 2 : A Significant Turning Point Of Ethnicity...
The World War 2 was a significant turning point of ethnicity studies towards modern studies. There
was a process of constructing modern nation–states with clear border or territories and diverse
ethnicities around the world (Plianroong, 2010, p. 2). The process contributed to significance of
ethnic identity when various ethnicities around the world had more interaction. " Ethnicity became a
key concept in addressing cultural difference in multicultural societies and as a concept aimed at
surpassing the essentializing and biological analysis dominating earlier analyses of race."
(Georgious, 2006) The theorisation of new ethicities was evolved into the beginning of primally put
identity into specific context of diaspora and translaitonalism according to "Stuart Hall's
(1988)analytical concept of new ethicities" (Georgious, 2006, p. 45). It is therefore diaspora and
diasporic identities becomes hitherto interestedness.
A number of theorists having attempted to study on diaspora, their ways of life and identity

the ideas of two prominent theorists, Arjun Appadurai and Benedict Anderson, that affects so much
of the world and have been referenced in many sociological study, especially globalization and

Upon entering the class I was anxious, curious, and also oblivious to the ideas I would be
encountering. Like other students who had not previously spent time discussing topics of race and
ethnicity, I myself had nervous tendencies in assuming that such a class may not strengthen my
understanding of ethnic and race relations. I realized I knew little about race or ethnicity, and even
the possible similarities or differences. However, I welcomed the opportunity to further discover the
possibilities of the class. My understanding of race was concentrated in a definition that could be
understood as different skin colors. My limited conception of ethnicity applied to people's origin or
where they lived. It seemed as though my lack of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Explanations as to why such areas seemed trivial in my life may possibly be found in the life I have
lived. My pre–adolescent years were spent in a community thick with diversity. My friendships
were as diverse as the environment in which I lived. It never struck me that racial and ethnic ideals
separated people in society. However, upon moving to a predominately white upper–class
community I began to question such racial and ethnic ideas. From my adolescent years through
today I began noticing that certain people are viewed differently for reasons relating to race and
ethnicity. As a result, the most recent community I grew up in has kept me sheltered from aspects of
society. As a product of a community where majorities existed, I found myself unexposed to the full
understanding of race and ethnicity. Prior to the class I had never fully dealt with issues of race or
ethnicity, as a result I wondered why they would be of any importance in my life. Nonetheless, these
feeling changed. Even though my understanding of ethnicity and race was limited my interest for
understanding grew. For example, one weekend among peers at Connecticut College my last name
was referred to in conversation about the Jewish population on campus. Without any hesitation the
people around me highlighted a distinction that I was not Jewish due to my German name and looks,
and therefore not included with the concern of the discussion. I came to wonder why such a
distinction was made. I knew that

A Reflective Educator And My Pedagogical Agenda

and discovered a truer, honest picture of myself and of where I hope to be as a future administrator
(NBPTS, 2014, p.16) The idea of cultural diversity has been part of my educational philosophy

It was by far the best "training" I could have ever received. I was hired at the same school at the end

diversity is important to me because of the amount of personal growth I have experienced by being
exposed to the diverse lives of my friends and students. My past experiences and this course have
prepared me to be a self–reflecting, culturally relevant educator and administrator. I hope to use my
knowledge from this research and course to influence other educators to also create culturally
relevant classrooms that will openly welcome and embrace all students. A classroom is only truly
culturally relevant when it has student academic success, paired with a development and
maintenance of cultural competence, for which students also develop cognizance where they desire
to challenge the status quo of the present–day social structure (Ladson–Billings, 1995, p.160)
According to Ladson–Billings (1995), it is behoove of teachers to have pedagogical excellence in

times for students of culturally diverse backgrounds, school is a place where they cannot be

Ethnicity And Ethnicity
Literature Review
The concept of ethnicity is not clearly defined is social science research However, it is often
associated with culture, nationality and language of defined groups (Chandra, 2006; Shah and
Davis, 2017). In 2015, the Office of Management and Budget revised the Standards for the
Classification of Federal Data on Race and Ethnicity (See Table 1). Socioeconomic status (SES)
includes income and educational attainment, financial security and perceptions of social class
(Shavers, 2007; Nicklett, 2011). Numerous studies have suggested that a strong relationship
between ethnicity and socioeconomic status exists in America. SES pervades many human
functioning to include physical and mental health (Nicklett, 2011; Williams, Mohammed, Leavell,
and Collins, 2010). Studies have suggested that ethnicity is related to illness, impairment and death
rates (Williams, Mohammed, Leavell, and Collins, 2010). Communities in American are often
segregated by SES, race, and ethnicity. Minority communities commonly share characteristics of
low economic development, poor health conditions and low levels of educational attainment. Low
SES has consistently been implicated as a risk factor for many of these problems that plague
communities. Research indicates that there are large health disparities based on social status that are
pervasive and persistent (McGuire, and Miranda, 2008; Fiscella, Gold, and Clancy, 2008). These
health disparities reflect the inequalities that exist in

Civic culture In Yugoslavia Essay
One definition of ethnicity reads as followed "identity with or membership in a particular racial,
national, or cultural group and observance of that group's customs, beliefs, or language". Ethnicity
defines many of us but a few want our definition to be "cleansed" and this is when civil conflict
arises. Ethnicity is frequently cited as an explanation for conflicts in the post cold war era.
Yugoslavia, a prime example of a system that encountered ethnic conflict that led to a violent civil
war, consisted of six republics and two autonomous districts. The government at the time wanted
control of these republics but the republics wanted to be free from government control. There was a

These congruities of blood, speech, custom, and so on, are seen to have an ineffable, and at times
overpowering, coerciveness in and of themselves. One is bound to one's kinsman, one's neighbor,
one's fellow believer, ipso facto; as a result not merely of personal affection, practical necessity,
common interest, or incurred obligation but at least in great part by virtue of some unaccountable
absolute import attributed to the very tie itself. The general strength of such primordial bonds, and
the types of them that are important, differ from person to person, from society to society, and from
time to time. But for virtually every person, in every society, at almost all times, some attachments
seem to flow more from a sense of natural–some would say spiritual–affinity than from social
interaction. The cultural primordialist is easier to accept in today's modern world. For primordialists,
ethnic bonds and hatreds are fundamental to one's identity, meaning that conflicts between ethnic
groups are inevitable. Conflicts will by definition be extremely brutal and violent because there is
no room for compromise on one's spiritual ties and cultural beliefs.
Instrumentalist, the second field of thought is when you can differentiate groups from tribes and
identity is situational. In modernization it changes the class system within society but does not
necessarily lead to conflict. Instrumentalism is when ethnic conflict occurs when it

Race And Ethnicity : Biological And Sociological Factors
Race and Ethnicity both relates to biological and sociological factors respectively and even though
they can overlap, they are distinct. The term race refers to the concept of dividing people into
populations or groups on the basis of various sets of physical characteristics (which usually result
from genetic ancestry). Race presumes shared biological or genetic traits, whether actual or asserted
and the category to which others assign individuals on the basis of physical characteristics. Races
are assumed to be distinguished by skin color, eye color or hair type. However, the scientific studies
based on racial distinctions shows that racial genetic differences are very weak except in skin color.
Ethnicity, however, refers to cultural factors, including nationality, regional culture, ancestry,
heritage, religion, customs and language. It refers to the origin of one 's ancestors for example Black
or African–American originated in Africa, White or Caucasian originated in European countries,
Asian originated in Asia; Hispanic originated in Latin American and so on. An ethnic group or
ethnicity is a population group whose members identify with each other on the basis of common
nationality or shared cultural traditions so one has to conform to certain practices in order to be
considered as belonging to a certain ethnic group. Ethnic identity is reflective of cultural practices as
well as the acquisition and maintenance of cultural characteristics

Ethnicity And Symbolic Ethnicity
Up to the twentieth century, Sociologists can believe that race "is characterized by its own biological
makeup, separate and distinct from the others" (Ferris and Stein, 2016, p. 215). The three distinct
racial groups are Negroid, Mongoloid, and Caucasoid. In result of having different races, it becomes
important to reveal our personal ethnic group membership. Meaning, a person's ethnicity is "a
socially defined category based on a common language, religion, nationality, or some other cultural
factor" (Ferris and Stein, 2016, p. 216). One can display their personal group membership through
symbolic ethnicity or situational ethnicity. Moreover, I have shown my ethnicity through these two
identities. People can show their memberships through dress, language, even through religious
practices. With some being clearer than others, one can display them through symbolic ethnicity.
Symbolic ethnicity is "an identity that is only relevant on specific occasions" and "does not
significantly affect everyday life" (Ferris and Stein, 2016, p. 218). I am an Irish American and have
engaged in this form of identity. Every St. Patrick's Day, my father, my sister, and I travel out to my
extended family in Spring, Texas. They happen to be our "large group of relatives" who live in
either "one household or in close proximity" of each other (Ferris and Stein, 2016, p. 351). Even
though my small family and our extended family are not super close, we still enjoy sharing our

Reflective Essay On Race And Ethnicity
Talk about race and ethnicity, sometimes get hard to keep it in the gray area. My story started with
my first time working in USA. When I started that job search in the agencies, I found that mixture of
race and ethnicity of people from different countries. Wanting to share with them during work
without malice any framework my way of being: the power of labels in race and ethnicity. When
you don't know diverse cultures, it is difficult when another arrives without resentment. When you
send us to work through the agency, try to establish a friendship with the co–workers with whom
you would spend all day. Understand that being in a country other than yours. While we worked
during that day I felt some displeasure on the part of one of the coworkers; because I showed a
desire to learn and do my best work, so they can send me to a job. Well. At the end of the day, the
supervisor talked to me more and the group's directions were given through me as the one who
interacted more with him and paid more attention to the details.
The supervisor sent us to cover and move some things from the house where we were. After
finishing moving them, we began to work with the water accident inside the house, everything that
was wet directly to the dump. The walls, the wooden beginning, were dismantled little by little and
for the dump. The problem started with the African–American, who was working very fast and who
paid us by the hour; but the supervisor divided us into two groups of 2 people.

Race, Religion, Social Class, And Ethnicity
How you do in school, your social ability, and your awareness of others are all guided by how you
identify. Identification in one's gender, race, religion, social class, and ethnicity are all driving forces
behind your future self. Identity is a crucial part of who you are, and in recent studies and
experimentation researchers have been trying to identify new, untested factors that influence
behavior in people. Although, in the past there hasn't been a strong focus on the positive and
negative effects of race and ethnicity, the conversation is now shifting to align itself with the current
times. With America becoming increasingly more ethnically and racially diverse, we must take the
time to see how certain factors, specifically race and ethnicity, impact a person's development and
behavior.
Through the research of scholarly articles and publications, it has been found that the intersection of
the racial and ethnic identity of an individual both shapes and affects their personal growth and
development in childhood and adolescence (Rivas–Drake, et al.). According to French, et al., this
has been a more recent conversation with racial preference being researched in the 1940's and
1950's using dolls, and research involving the ethnic identity of children, under the age of 10,
beginning only in the early 1990's (2). Furthermore, earlier data involved mostly African American
adolescents and focused on their negative experiences and internalization of racism rather than

A Brief Note On The Race And Ethnicity

  • 1. A Brief Note On The Race And Ethnicity Race and ethnicity have always been a difficult topic to talk about, but not because I am embarrassed, but because to this date I'm still confused. Most of the time I find myself confused and asking questions such as, who am I? Where do I belong? When I get asked about my race I always say Hispanic or Latina; I don't even know what I am. In high school my Spanish teacher once told me that Hispanic and Latina is not the same thing. Hispanics are individuals who are related to Spain and Latinos are individuals who are related to Latin America. However, there is also Chicano/ Chicana, a person who is born in the U.S but their parents were born in Mexico. Society identifies me as Hispanic or Latina because I speak Spanish and by the way I look, they can already know that I'm from Mexico, which I don't mind at all. I can also be classified as Chicana because I' am a U.S citizen and my parents were born in Mexico, but I do have a problem with being called Chicana. This is because of my past experiences, when I was called Chicana they meant to call me a chola, a wetback, a gang member along with other names that disrespects who I am. I have also been called pocha by friends or family members from Mexico because I was born in the U.S and even though I come from Mexican parents I don't "act or speak like them". In Mexico I'm not seen as Latina, Hispanic, Chicana or Mexican. For my Mexican relatives I'm just seen as an "American" or as they would say a "pocha". Coming from two ... • 2. Gloria Anzaldúa's How To Tame A Wild Tongue There are numerous personality tests that claim they are able to determine who a person is. While taking these tests, most people feel they identify with more than one answer. However, since they can only choose one answer, people think these tests are inaccurate and pointless. The personality tests try to put people into boxes and subvert the complexity of a human being. This slight frustration people obtain from these tests is how multiethnic people feel all the time. They do not know whether they should be one ethnicity or the other, so they become lost in the stereotypes. In the American society, multiethnic people continuously struggle psychologically to determine their identity, to keep their cultural values, and to still call themselves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the beginning, Anzaldúa states, "My tongue keeps pushing out the wads of cotton, pushing back the drills, the long thin needles. 'I've never seen anything as strong or as stubborn,' he says. And I think, how do you tame a wild tongue, train it to be quiet, how do you bridle and saddle it?" (43). When Anzaldúa decribes her tongue "pushing out the wads of cotton," she demonstrates how she feels to be not be able to fully express her Chicana identity. Later, Anzaldúa states, "Ethnic identity is twin skin to linguistic identity– I am my language. Until I can take pride in my language, I cannot take pride in myself" (46). Anzaldúa uses the dentist trying to tame her "stubborn" tongue to compare to how in American society, she is told to be quiet and not use her Chicano language, which Anzaldúa identifies herself as her language. As a result of this limitation in society, Anzaldúa realizes that she does not want to compliant and to "tame a wild tongue [and] train it to be quiet." She does not want to have to change how she speaks to cater English or Spanish speakers. Anzaldúa wants to be able to express her identity through her language. Towards the end, Anzaldúa also states, "I have so internalized the borderline conflict that sometimes I feel like one cancels out the other and we are zero, nothing, no one" (49). While Anzaldúa feels she lives with two identities in the United States, she finds that switching from identity to identity results in the identities canceling out. Then, she becomes nothing. The complexity of discovering oneself in a uniform society causes a person to feel lost. Anzaldúa can no longer stay quiet about this struggle as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay about Race and Ethnicity in Social Sciences Use of the Terms "Race" and "Ethnicity" in the Social Sciences Defining identity can be complex and therefore we have to investigate the factors involved that make us who we are and how we are seen by others, collectively or individually. Social scientists have to consider the key elements which shape identity, the importance of social structures and agency involved. The differences and/or similarities between us are the focus that categorise and label us in society. Knowing who we are is important for many reasons including, social rights, obtaining a passport, housing, health, employment, marriage, and over all, being able to ascertain who we are, and belong. The terms 'race' and 'ethnicity' are central features in the process of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These subgroup identities highlight the relational factors which exist in categorising identity, each requiring the other in order to make the comparison between ethnic differences, power and status. Racialization and Ethnicization are preferred concepts as they contribute more to the idea that the identities we adopt are part of a process and are not static, referring to a dynamic process rather than a fixed state. Categorisations from the 1970's onwards, such as the definition of 'black' or 'white', were too vague, and failed to recognise the specific needs of other ethnic minorities. In order to monitor and measure statistically the discrimination and underachievement of such groups, collecting 'ethnic' statistics in relation to 'race' and 'ethnicity' was necessary and these can be found in official government censuses. Over the years it became apparent that categorisation of ethnic groups in the censuses rendered some groups 'invisible' (Questioning Identity, ch 4, p 137, section 4.1.1), for example Irish and Welsh. The category of 'white' has had to be expanded into subcategories as the 'white' grouping classification remained singular within the censuses until 2001, and ethnicization of 'whites' was too generalised. ("Questioning Identity: Kath Woodward ch.4 p138 – Office of Population Censuses and Surveys, 1991) These amendments show us that there have been changes in ethnic representation and that there is more awareness regarding ethnic identities and ... • 4. Similarities And Differences Between The Primordialist And... Orianne Sagrada IS 680 Prof. Woldemikael 14 October 2014 Midterm 1 1. Compare and contrast the primordialist with the instrumentalist/circumstantialist approaches that provide an understanding of the concept of Ethnicity? What is the constructionist perspective? According to constructionism, how do the elites view ethnicity? (Use Introduction from Hutchinson and Smith book Ethnicity and the excerpt of chapters from Cornell and Hartmann that will be posted on blackboard. NB: I used Cornell and Hartmann's book Ethnicity and Race for my class lecture on approaches to ethnicity.) In Ethnicity by John Hutchinson and Anthony Smith identify two existing camps of ethnicity: primordialist and instrumentalist/circumstantialist. The term 'priomordialist' in terms of ethnicity was fathered by Edward Shils, a notable sociologist. Shils sought to differentiate various social bonds–personal, primordial, sacred and civil ties and to demonstrate how even in contemporary, civic societies other types of social bonding existed (Hutchinson and Smith ). After Shils coined the concept of primordialist, late anthropologist, Clifford Greetz advanced the subject and spoke of the 'overpowering' and ineffable quality attaching to certain kinds of tie, which the participants tended to see as exterior, coercive, and given. Greetz further emphasized that the catalyst to an effective and successful modern state is the drive for personal identity–a fundamental basis of primordial ties. By definition, ... • 5. Rhetorical Analysis of "Cultural Baggage" Essay Jenny Stout Professor Bowers English 1102 5 September 2014 Rhetorical Analysis In Barbara Ehrenreich's Cultural baggage, the topic of ethnic heritage is discussed as the author is responding to an acquaintance asking her what her ethnic background is. Ehrenreich finds her purpose for writing her essay in making readers aware that no ethnic background is in fact a background. She takes on a not so common viewpoint of herself as most people pride themselves in where they came from and the traditions of their culture, rather than feeling almost embarrassed to claim their background. Ehrenreich claims that she has no ethnic background, disregarding her Scottish, English, and Irish heritage. While others "stand up and proudly reclaim ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ehrenreich was finally able to feel a sense of pride knowing that "the race of 'none' marches on." The author wrote her essay including several references to certain traditions that different cultures practice. The audience is assumed to have some general knowledge of different cultures, but nothing to extensive. The author also assumes that the audience is somewhat well educated due to the higher–level word choices she makes. Ehrenreich is describing her realization of heritage to her audience in the possible hopes that the readers can either relate in some way or share some of the excitement that she does in her own ethnicity, or lack of. Ehrenreich was able to make her point that she does in fact have an ethnicity other than Scottish, English and Irish. It was intriguing to see the progression in the essay from the authors feeling of disconnect with her heritage to a sense of pride in her family that refrains from carrying on cultural activities. She recognizes where she came from and concludes that no tradition is a tradition, rather than trying to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Latino Ethnicity And Ethnicity Every ethnic group is important into how we understand each other. With this being said, I find it particularly interesting about the creation of the Latino population. As a short background the Latino population was created through three specific ethnic groups. Africans, white europeans and the indigenous population of the Caribbean. I plan on examining the Latino population by discovering their group identity and critiquing their political engagement and influence through three different theoretical perspectives. These theoretical ideas are those of a primordialist, instrumentalist, and constructivists viewpoints in order to help understand more about the Latino population when it comes to ethnicity as whole. One of the biggest ideologies that goes behind ethnic politics or group identity, is from a primordialist perspective. The core belief of primordialism is best defined as, "ethnic and national identity (nationalism) are derived from human nature. Therefore, these ideas are biologically constructed by humans and that they are fixed or given"(Theories of Ethnicity/Nationalism 10). Now, if we apply this to the origin of the Latino population, this concept would simply state that Latinos have been biologically constructed and that every form of Latino is fixed or given. However, in order to understand, we must realize the birth of the Latino population. The Latinos are a byproduct of the combination of all of thee cultures intermarrying and producing offspring. With this being said, there has been much conflict between the national identity of what makes a Latino a Latino. As stated in the article titled "Theories of Ethnicity and Nationalism" the author examines this conflict as, "ethnic tensions and diversity are natural.. Ethnic identity and ethnic consciousness are percieved of favorable groups...in other words these are generated independently" (Theories of Ethnicity/Nationalism 10). This examination directly to how various groups of Latinos view each other. There are certain groups such as Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, and Mexicans that believe that one group is superior to one another. When in fact, they are all apart of one overarching main ethnic groups. Conflict will always continue to rise when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Race, Ethnicity And Ethnicity I would like to discuss the issue of race and ethnicity in sports. We will also explore the bigger questions. How much does race and ethnicity matter in the sports world? Are certain races dominant in certain sports? Is there a difference in how we treat players based on race and ethnicity? Does it matter? I would like to answer some of these questions and gain a better understanding of how much of a part they play. Introduction Race and ethnicity in sports is a very delicate subject. You run a great risk of offending someone when discussing the subject to begin with. Is one race dominant in a certain sport? I think we need to address this with respect and delicacy. But when we look at the need to be so delicate, that should be an indication that race and ethnicity matter with regards to sports. Gender, Race, and Ethnicity and Sports When we look at the sports world, there is no doubt that some races dominate certain sports. Numerically speaking. If we look statistically, approximately 70 percent of NFL and approximately 76 percent of the NBA players are African American. We can also look elsewhere, such as NHL hockey. As of 2015 approximately 50 of all players were Canadian. We can see finite numbers that give us an indication where one demographic is larger than another. By looking at the percentages and numbers in each sport we know what we see, but does it matter to us as a society? There are some people that say that the numbers have changed ... • 8. Ethnicity And Its Impact On Development Essay Ethnicity has always been seen as a factor that helped bring people in a certain community together. In earlier years, ethnicity was nothing more than just identity that people were proud of. However times have changed and the silver lining that was in ethnicity has begun to fade and in some areas, it has completed ceased to exist. Today, ethnic ambitions have continuously replaced the patriotism of people to a nation further dividing their loyalties to their nation (Manyasa, 2005:69). Tribal orientations and ethnic labels have taken over in most of African states. In such cases, a person is first loyal to their ethnic group and then second comes the nation. This is a scenario that has been seen to impact on development. That is to say, both negative and positive ethnicity has an effect on development. Unfortunately, negative ethnicity tends to be more pronounced. As it is well known, development is a multi–faceted process that can be hampered by several factors. Development in any society is meant to positively impact the lives of the people through advancing in terms of social and economic status. Ideally development brings about opportunities for the people but when these opportunities are hindered due to the fact that one belongs to a certain ethnic group, then development is blocked. Existence of various ethnic groups in a country does not necessarily mean conflicts, but when competition among these groups arises, then conflict is inevitable (Alemayehu, 2009). In ... In Conjugated Oppression: Class And Ethnicity Among 7 In Conjugated Oppression: Class and Ethnicity among Guaymi and Kuna Banana Workers, ethnologist Philippe Bourgois argues that there are new approaches in the analysis of ethnicity and the conflicts between class and power that occur within it. Thus, the discussion of the relationship between ethnicity and class, a debate on the discernment of ideology and material reality, is increasingly present. He also asserts that by accepting a definition of ideology as a belief system present in power relations, then ethnicity is socially important as a form of ideological expression. Ideology as part of "material reality" in conjunction with political processes are also components of obtaining "class consciousness". The author stated: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Guaymi and The Kuna as Unit Fruit Company workers Both the Guaymi and the Kuna became members of the United Fruit Company in the province of Bocas del Toro in the early 1950s, and even though they came from more or less similar economic spheres, their political structures differed very much in the community context and in their relations to the corporate entities. The result is a profoundly different experience of economic exploitation and ideological domination. The oppression of the Guaymi, says Bourgois, is different in comparison to the Kuna, the Guaymi endure what he calls a "conjugated" oppression. • 10. Race, Ethnicity, Art and Film Essay This paper tries to analyze race relations, ethnicity and how art and film relates to these social issues in their cultural context. Art and film have played vital roles in advocating for a society free of ethnicity and racism. Using vivid descriptions and evidence of both text and a movie this paper seeks to relate accordingly the concerned issues and factors affecting these social vices. It will demonstrate race and ethnic tendencies in diverse cultural contexts. As a demographic phenomenon, ethnicity is belonging to a specific ethnic group possessing distinct culture and common origin. This is called inscriptive group identity. According to Said Edward (1993) a good introduction to matters of societal concern and especially those of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The colonial state activated heightened and enlarged ethnicity in a variety of ways. They brought about a diverse wider group of interaction into competition, the colonies and the administrative union started localizing administration. They started strengthening and enlarging ethnic allegiances which increased ethnic tensions. In addition, they actively promoted preferential treatment of ethnic groups as a matter of policy by establishing systems of collaboration. Social Darwinism is a socialist theory that tries to understand the reason behind colonization and other social vices like ethnicity. It was used to justify numerous exploits which we classify as dubious moral values today. For instance doctors were responsible for assisting to die. Social Darwinism states that people especially colonizers failed to justify the reason why they forcefully seized land and resources from weaker natives. This is also illustrated in the military affairs where the strongest military will win. The application of social Darwinism has since provided the justification for more exploitative forms of social capitalism where workers are usually paid less and yet they have worked for many hours. It also tries to explain the reasoning behind slavery and colonization. However, not all social Darwinism is negative. There are positive results of social Darwinism. ... • 11. Educational Institution Effects on Race and Ethnicity EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION EFFECTS ON RACE & ETHNICITY Race and ethnicity are usually used interchangeably, however they are not same. Ethnicity is described by the group on the basis of family history, national foundation, and forefathers. Ethnicity cannot transform, although elements of a particular ethnic group's community can transform. Race is a term that attempts to categorize human beings into distinct groups by their Phenotypes according to skin color, eye color, etc. All over the history, race has been usually used as a social, cultural, and biological establishment. (Taylor and Whittaker 233). The prospect of Race changes with time and remains to be difficult to explain as our recent understanding of biological research fails to support the concept that there are significant biological variances between Races. In the United States there is huge variation in terms of Race and Ethnicity, and different ethnic, racial, and cultural framework of the United States is well maintained. 2000 Census data show many swings to a more culturally and linguistically mixed society (Hobbs and Stoops 7). In the United States out of every four people one is from a different ethnic background other than white. These progressions are reflected in population of schools. Moreover, 2000 census data show that there are around 1% Indian/Alaskan Native students, 4% Asian/Pacific Islander students, 16% black (non–Hispanic) students, 15% Hispanic students, and 63% white (non–Hispanic) students ... • 12. Is Tribal Identification Is The Most Socially Salient... Coethinicity argues that tribal identification is the most socially salient identity in Kampala, Uganda. Based on a series of experiments, the authors of Coethnicity found that homogenous ethnic identity was crucial to the pursuit of the common good based on the shared ethnic norm of reciprocity. Contrary to this idea, I will argue that this assumption is empirically questionable and ultimately unhelpful in the broader quest to understand how "ethnicity" and politics relate because there are other factors involved that Coethnicity does not take into account. Before expanding on this idea I will first offer a deeper account into Coethnicity's findings. Next, I will develop my argument using the ideas of Burbanker, Bates, and Posner. With these accounts I will demonstrate Coethnicity over simplifies politics in Africa and there other factors that should be considered like motivation and other external factors. Co–ethnicty begins by developing the assumption that ethnic diversity provides the explanation for failures of cooperation from members of different communities. Failures like, failing to launch initiatives to fight crime, collect garbage, and maintain drainage channels in the Mulago–Kyebando ethnically diverse communities. The book takes this idea as given and then goes forth to explain that Coethnics are more likely to cooperate as demonstrated through a variety of experimental games, such as the prisoner's dilemma, in Kampala, Uganda (19). Ultimately their results ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Ethnicity : The Cause And Causes Of Conflict In Nigeria Ethnicity is how individuals perceive themselves, and unlike race it can be changed. There are countries in which there are several different types of ethnic groups, and in some cases that could lead to conflict within a country, but as research will show it is not the only cause, and in some cases the conflict was purposely organized. In such cases it is usually in a developing country, which is "defined according to their Gross National Income (GNI) per capita per year. Countries with GNI of US$ 11,905 and less and less are defined as developing (specified by the World Bank, 2012)." (CITATION) Developing countries that have established themselves as democracies tend to have weak institutions, where elections are more about connections and winning, rather than trying to establish and follow formal rules. Nigeria is both, a developing country and one with a weak democracy, there are many causes to this, such as problems with natural resources, and unable to maintain a strong formal government, but mainly it all could be traced back to the fact that it has a divided society where there is no sense of nationality. Divergence in a country does not mean violence, in the contrary in most cases places with a lot of different ethnicities tend to be peaceful, but Nigeria is exempt from this because it was, in a sense, programmed for all the different ethnicities and religions to have conflict amongst each other by the British. • 14. Is Dining A Good Chance? In college, does dining with only members of one's ethnicity and participating in ethic organizations/activities decline ethnic relations on campus? On one hand, only dining with one's ethic group segregates the campus by race. Also, participating in ethnic organizations and activities could make people of different ethnicities feel segregated or left out. On the other hand dining by ethnic background could just be people hanging out with whom they enjoy to be around or relate to. Further more, participating in ethnic activities and organizations could spread awareness of different cultures and give other ethnicities the chance to interact and learn about each other. In college people tend t sit with their friends when eating. Depending on where people are from, they may only be used to interacting with one ethnicity. This means when they arrive at college they are more likely to be drawn to people of that ethnicity. So in the dinning hall at any university there is a good chance there is some segregation of ethnicity. This means there is less interaction and relations going on between different ethnicities. As college get further into the school years, it will become less likely that students will break these patterns. This is because bonds and friendships have been made. Adding to this is ethnic organizations and activities at the school. While all of these organizations are open to people of any ethnicity, many people of the other ethnicities feel uncomfortable joining ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Sociology : Race And Ethnicity Race and ethnicity are commonly used as synonyms for each other as we encounter many diverse individuals throughout the world. Sociologist on the other hand, find very distinct understandings to how these terms, while different, hold correlation to one another. Max Weber, a founding figure of sociology, was one of the first to define race and ethnicity. He stood with the idea of essentialism which presumes "that and individual 's identity depends on fundamental and innate characteristics that are deep–seated, inherited, and unchangeable." (Pearson, pg 241) As for ethnicity, Weber described it as subjective belief in relations to a groups common descent. While sociologist today may disagree with Weber 's theory, they do apply this idea of subjectivity and have correlated it to that of not only group definitions but of our own perceptions of biological similarity. If you would have asked me, "Do you believe race is biological or that is was socially constructed?", I would have responded with the same examples you may commonly receive from scientist or anthropologist; that race is in fact biological and deeply rooted and shared from generation to generation by DNA. However, through analyzing Pearson 's, Chapter 11 Race & Ethnicity we discover various examples in which history has built the shelves in which everyone is neatly categorized for its convenience even if not entirely in truth. Take for example white privilege. For most of the United States history, it was basically ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Race, Ethnicity, And Ethnicity Most people in our society believe the common misconception that race and ethnicity are synonymous. Race and ethnicity are related, but are not equivalent. Race by definition means "a socially constructed category of people who share a biologically transmitted trait that members of society consider important" (Macionis 296). Ethnicity by definition means "a shared cultural heritage" (Macionis 298). In shorter terms, race is social physical appearance, while ethnicity is the cultural aspect. Social conflation of these two terms is important to me because society often mistakes ethnicity and race for the other or just considers it as one. This is relevant to me because I have dealt with this issue has come up quite a few times in my life. Racially and socially, I appear to be a "White" or "Caucasian" female, but ethnically I am Mexican and this is relevant because of the confusion between Race and Ethnicity people do not understand or are confused. People usually are a bit confused or shocked when they hear this. Their response is always somewhere along the lines of "You can't be Mexican. You're white." or "But you're white." I may not "look" Mexican because I do not have dark hair or skin, but I am Mexican: my mother is from Mexico, and we visit when we get the opportunity, which is maybe once every year. Annotated Bibliography : Usefulness Of Ethnicity Essay ARTICLE THREE: USEFULNESS OF ETHNICITY IN INTERNATIONAL CONSUMER MARKETING Internationalization is the term that can characterize the current state of the consumer market in many parts of the world (Dillard, p. 25). The world of business has evolved into a market where there are accommodations necessary to appeal to a larger market and gain a larger market share. Identifying the ethnic identity of a target market can help with the promotion status and product design for mass distribution. This study will examine the implications in identifying the ethnic identity of Latino and Asian consumers in the apparel and retail industry. Research Question There have been previous studies in the past that have affirmed that ethnic identity contributes to the decision marking of Latino and Asian consumers. The first two hypotheses are taking that same logic and cross applying the methods to the cultures' reactions to apparel shopping orientation and retail format preferences. The last four hypotheses are comparing the outcomes between strong and weak members of each ethnicity. It is assumed by past studies that strongly identified individuals stay with tradition and will follow the ways of their ancestors, whereas weakly identified individuals will likely conform to the new customs of the current place of occupancy and assimilate to the standard of living. There are six hypotheses presented in the research: H1: Latino and Asian consumers will show differences in their appeal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Whether it is their involvement in politics, corporate management or even sports, Hispanics have showed that they have what it takes to perform at par with any other racial group. When it comes to the involvement of a particular minority in any activity there are bound to be certain issues. This paper will explore the themes of sporting identities to analyze the experiences of Latino males in sport. An attempt will be made to understand the barriers and prejudices that Latino males have had to encounter in the field of sports in the United States of America. Latinos have managed to make a profound impact in the field of American sports. Their interest in sports helped them assimilate themselves into American mainstream culture. They were also able to maintain their entire families' ethnic identity at the same time. Since they had limited economic opportunities and had to face racial discrimination they were able to use sports as a refuge from the grim realities of the society. They used the field of sports to negotiate race relations, nationalism and citizenship. Sport was an arena that they could use to learn how to behave according to societal gender norms. Even for female athletes sports arenas provided the space to achieve gender equality, something that could never be achieved outside the field of sports (Alamillo, n.d). Every sportsperson has an ... • 20. Race And Ethnicity Race and ethnicity are two terms which are crucial in understanding a person's familial and personal identity. These terms are misunderstood by most Americans, and many do not know the difference. There have been major societal implications to the changing populations of groups of race and ethnicity in the US. Minority groups and immigrants have struggled with discrimination, poverty and other issues partly due to historical impacts such as slavery and segregation. Economical and political oppression has had a strong effect on the structure of Black families in the US, leading many families to an "extended household" structure. Latino families tend to exhibit familism, which may have slowed their integration into American life, but may have also helped their growth in the US. Race and ethnicity are two different terms which are often confused. Neither race nor ethnicity are biologically classifiable, and are truly socially identifiable classifications. As defined by Cohen (2015:75) race is "a group of people believed to share common descent, based on perceived innate physical similarities." Cohen (2015:79) defines ethnicity as "a group of people with a common cultural identification, based on a combination of language, religion, ancestral origin, or traditional practices." Finally, Cohen (2015:79) defines racial ethnicity as "an ethnic group perceived to share physical characteristics." Whether your race affects your life chances or if other factors are involved as well. It will be looking at different ethnic minorities and how well they are doing in school. Although most schools are seen as multicultural, you can see clear differences between ethnic minorities. Statistics show that clearly some ethnicities are doing poorer than others. At the moment Black Caribbean boys are achieving the least amount of GCSE A*–C grades whereas more than 50% of Chinese girls are achieving the most GCSE's. There are many factors as to why some ethnicities do better than others. Ethnicity can have a major affect on your achievement but other things like– social class, gender and location can also play a part in how well you do. Success or failure can be influenced by what happens within the school and classroom. If teachers have low expectations of an ethnic minority it may affect the actual progress of a pupil. This is known as the self fulfilling prophecy. If a teacher labels most Bangladeshi boys as 'not very bright and able'. The teacher has labeled the group and made a prediction about them. Because the teacher has low expectation, he/she will except below average homework. Also teachers will not encourage the pupils as they are already labeled as 'failures'. As the teacher has not helped the Bangladeshi boys they would have made the prediction true. So this shows that teachers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ethnic background continues to play a role in the amount of wealth in a given household. Studies show that minorities accumulate wealth at an substantially lower rate than Caucasians. A twenty–five–year longitudinal study by Brandeis University discovered that, "The median wealth of white families has shot up precipitously since 1984, while the median wealth of black families has barely moved," (Resnikoff, 2011) This research will address the question as to whether ethnicity truly plays a role in the amount of wealth a group can accumulate because of factors such as homeownership, college education, and unemployment. The null hypothesis would state that wealth accumulation is highly correlated with race, education, homeownership and income. Whereas the alternative hypothesis would state that wealth accumulation is not correlated with the above–mentioned variables. In order to develop a theoretical framework for this project, a literature review of scholarly journal articles relevant to the topic and causes being addressed, was completed. Studies that have already been conducted on the causes and previous Census reports were used to support my hypothesis. Wealth is defined simply as an individual's reportable assets minus debt. Many negative connotations have been associated with the word race and these are evident as one reflects on the historical origins of the term. Commonly the term race is closely connected to the notion of 'racism.' Racism is a specific form of prejudice which focuses on physical variations between people. It describes the ideological belief that a person, or groups of people can be classified into 'races' which can be ranked in terms of superiority and inferiority (Spoonley, 1988:4). Giddens defines racism as "the attribution of characteristics of superiority or inferiority to a population sharing certain physically inherited characteristics" (1997:584). This supports the idea that racism is a manner of prejudice or animosity against people who have different physical characteristics. It is in virtue of circumstances such as these that Anthropologists find it necessary to make a distinction between the concepts of race and ethnicity. In contrast to the idea of race, Ethnicity refers to ethnic affiliation, or the "cultural practices and outlooks of a given community of people that set them apart from others" (Giddens, 1997:210). • 25. Reflection On Race And Ethnicity I am creative, short, determined, competitive, and a dyslexic Hispanic female. Society has shown us that a large part of who we are in the United States focuses on our ethnicity and race. For every important document, we have to fill out a form asking us about our race/ethnicity. We can say that we are one race but we actually all are multiple races. Growing up I knew that I was Hispanic but I really didn't feel like I was treated differently. I feel like because I had the lighter skin I was not viewed necessarily as a Mexican. There were a few times that I was made fun of for being Hispanic, the largest problem that I faced was people thinking that I spoke Spanish. On My mother's side, I am 6th generation Coloradan with ties to México and on my father's side, I am a third generation American with ties to Spain and México. Defining yourself can always be a struggle because not everyone defines you the way that you define yourself. Growing up my family told me stories about how they were made fun of or picked on because of their skin color and the fact that they spoke Spanish. My grandfather started a roofing company in North Denver as he worked more and made more money he moved to the Italian part of town where my mother and her siblings were called coconuts and Oreos because they were dark on the outside but they acted differently compared to other Hispanics. My grandmother told me about how people would tell her not to speak Spanish because she was an American and that she was in America so she needed to speak English. This was difficult for Hispanic people because they were having to lose part of their culture and part of their identity. My grandmother always would tell me about how it was harder for her to attend school because she would get into trouble if she acted differently. My grandmother on my father's side of the family had a more sheltered life where she was not racially discriminated against because she was part of the Spanish consulate. She always told us about the cool places she would go to because of her father's job. It was interesting learning that she was born in Japan while her sister was born in France. The Importance Of Race And Ethnicities I claim that the functionality of the world relies heavily on race and ethnicity to make assumptions on individuals, leading to the continuation of stereotypes. However, while this is all true, people are confusing race with ethnicity causing assumptions to be even more unfair. The lifestyle of an individual is what defines them not the genetics that define their appearance. In Olson's "The End of Race: Hawaii and the Mixing of Peoples," he discusses how stereotypes and discrimination exist due to different backgrounds and culture not by race which is evident in Hawaii in which most of the population is mixed and have had cultures blend into one coherent culture that everyone accepts. Eventually it'll reach to a point where we will not see an individual as a race with distinct traits that can be categorized but instead as a person with individuality. Moreover In "Paper Tigers," writer Wesley Yang believes that Asians have been raised in certain ways that have made them successful throughout school but has also simultaneously crippled them in the job market and much like the Glass Ceiling, Asians have inherited a Bamboo Ceiling thus stating that ethnic background has an effect with the success that one experiences through life. Multiculturalism is the preservation of different cultures or cultural identities within a unified society, as a state or nation (Dictionary.com, 2013). Canada is a country full of many different ethnicities and cultures, but even though Canada is housing them, it's just not working. Problems in multiculturalism are most prominent in three areas, the communities, the schools and the workforce. Multiculturalism in the communities are facing struggle because of the cities' appeal to new immigrants and because of the segregation in ethnic enclaves. Multiculturalism in the schools is evident when unfair religious accommodations are made and when schools are stereotyped based on the racial majority. The workforce faces problems in multiculturalism because of the employers employing visible minorities which creates segregation and because many immigrants' credentials are being looked over and given worse positions. Multiculturalism is not working in Canada based on the discrimination, stereotypes and segregation evident in the communities, schools and the workforce. Canada accepts roughly 250,000 immigrants each year (Press, 2008), yet over half of the immigrants choose to live in one of Canada's three major cities; Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Race could be one of those words that gap us, it recognizes us from each other. Race is the way we classify individuals into gatherings this depends on our physical or social even social characteristics, family, and hereditary qualities. race and ethnicity play a urgent part in our lives, yet Is race the way your conceived or basically the way other individuals see you. Groups worked around racial and ethnic identity can regularly offer interior sources of resilience. Be that as it may, these parts of our character may likewise have unfavorable social ramifications, by impacting our odds of accepting quality restorative care, landing a position offer or a credit, or being wrongly halted by the police. In spite of the social essentialness of race, the groups of basic physical qualities and the names we use to portray it can change enormously after some time. Ethnicity, in the interim, may compare with social practices, for example, the nourishments we appreciate, the dialects we talk, and how we adore. In "Stranger in the Town" by James Baldwin, and in "Who shot Johnny" by Debra Dickerson, these creators can both concur in the idea of race being a supposition about somebody for what they look like from shade of skin to culture. American School Boards should mandate a curriculum that provides multicultural and ethnic studies programs for their students. This allows our American youth to have a wider perspective on human interaction and historical events that lead to world we currently live in. More specifically, in American history, it provides a foundational understanding of the numerous ethnic backgrounds that help shape this country into a pillar of freedom for the world to see. America was built by people from all over the globe and this historical fact is the primary reason our educational programs should include an understanding of all the cultures that played a role in its success. • 30. The Importance Of Race And Ethnicity In today's society it seems to be believed that all racial conflicts or issues have been resolved, yet unfortunately, this could not be any further from the truth. Issues stemming from how people view different races and ethnicities continue to be so prevalent in this modern world. Judgement and prejudices cloud people's minds and that does not allow them to really comprehend that race and ethnicity are only one feature of a person. First of all, in order to fully grasp the idea and effects that race and ethnicity play into a human being, it is important to know what these two words really mean. In the book, Social Problems: Community, Policy, and Social Action, race is defined as a population that shares a set of genetic traits or physical features, and ethnic groups are defined as groups of people who display a set of cultural traits such as language, religion, or diet (Leon– Guerrero, p.65). Now understanding what the race and ethnicity of a person means, the next step should be to understand that these factors should not play into any consideration for any judgement since they are only one part of a person. Unfortunately, people who are part of the race minorities tend to fall into scrutiny by a society that does not fully comprehend this. This has led to negative mindsets and many forms of discrimination in different types of environments. Socioeconomic status (SES) includes income and educational attainment, financial security and perceptions of social class (Shavers, 2007; Nicklett, 2011). Numerous studies have suggested that a strong relationship between ethnicity and socioeconomic status exists in America. SES pervades many human functioning to include physical and mental health (Nicklett, 2011; Williams, Mohammed, Leavell, and Collins, 2010). Minority communities commonly share characteristics of low economic development, poor health conditions and low levels of educational attainment. Low SES has consistently been implicated as a risk factor for many of these problems that plague communities. The cultural primordialist is easier to accept in today's modern world. The term race refers to the concept of dividing people into populations or groups on the basis of various sets of physical characteristics (which usually result from genetic ancestry). Race presumes shared biological or genetic traits, whether actual or asserted and the category to which others assign individuals on the basis of physical characteristics. Races are assumed to be distinguished by skin color, eye color or hair type. However, the scientific studies based on racial distinctions shows that racial genetic differences are very weak except in skin color. Ethnicity, however, refers to cultural factors, including nationality, regional culture, ancestry, heritage, religion, customs and language. It refers to the origin of one 's ancestors for example Black or African–American originated in Africa, White or Caucasian originated in European countries, Asian originated in Asia; Hispanic originated in Latin American and so on. An ethnic group or ethnicity is a population group whose members identify with each other on the basis of common nationality or shared cultural traditions so one has to conform to certain practices in order to be considered as belonging to a certain ethnic group. Ethnic identity is reflective of cultural practices as well as the acquisition and maintenance of cultural characteristics Culture is the sum of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Ethnicity And Symbolic Ethnicity Up to the twentieth century, Sociologists can believe that race "is characterized by its own biological makeup, separate and distinct from the others" (Ferris and Stein, 2016, p. 215). The three distinct racial groups are Negroid, Mongoloid, and Caucasoid. In result of having different races, it becomes important to reveal our personal ethnic group membership. Meaning, a person's ethnicity is "a socially defined category based on a common language, religion, nationality, or some other cultural factor" (Ferris and Stein, 2016, p. 216). One can display their personal group membership through symbolic ethnicity or situational ethnicity. Moreover, I have shown my ethnicity through these two identities. People can show their memberships through dress, language, even through religious practices. With some being clearer than others, one can display them through symbolic ethnicity. Symbolic ethnicity is "an identity that is only relevant on specific occasions" and "does not significantly affect everyday life" (Ferris and Stein, 2016, p. 218). I am an Irish American and have engaged in this form of identity. Every St. Patrick's Day, my father, my sister, and I travel out to my extended family in Spring, Texas. They happen to be our "large group of relatives" who live in either "one household or in close proximity" of each other (Ferris and Stein, 2016, p. 351). Even though my small family and our extended family are not super close, we still enjoy sharing our group ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Reflective Essay On Race And Ethnicity Talk about race and ethnicity, sometimes get hard to keep it in the gray area. My story started with my first time working in USA. When I started that job search in the agencies, I found that mixture of race and ethnicity of people from different countries. Wanting to share with them during work without malice any framework my way of being: the power of labels in race and ethnicity. When you don't know diverse cultures, it is difficult when another arrives without resentment. When you send us to work through the agency, try to establish a friendship with the co–workers with whom you would spend all day. Understand that being in a country other than yours. While we worked during that day I felt some displeasure on the part of one of the coworkers; because I showed a desire to learn and do my best work, so they can send me to a job. Well. At the end of the day, the supervisor talked to me more and the group's directions were given through me as the one who interacted more with him and paid more attention to the details. The supervisor sent us to cover and move some things from the house where we were. After finishing moving them, we began to work with the water accident inside the house, everything that was wet directly to the dump. The walls, the wooden beginning, were dismantled little by little and for the dump. The problem started with the African–American, who was working very fast and who paid us by the hour; but the supervisor divided us into two groups of 2 people. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Race, Religion, Social Class, And Ethnicity How you do in school, your social ability, and your awareness of others are all guided by how you identify. Identification in one's gender, race, religion, social class, and ethnicity are all driving forces behind your future self. Identity is a crucial part of who you are, and in recent studies and experimentation researchers have been trying to identify new, untested factors that influence behavior in people. Although, in the past there hasn't been a strong focus on the positive and negative effects of race and ethnicity, the conversation is now shifting to align itself with the current times. With America becoming increasingly more ethnically and racially diverse, we must take the time to see how certain factors, specifically race and ethnicity, impact a person's development and behavior. Through the research of scholarly articles and publications, it has been found that the intersection of the racial and ethnic identity of an individual both shapes and affects their personal growth and development in childhood and adolescence (Rivas–Drake, et al.). According to French, et al., this has been a more recent conversation with racial preference being researched in the 1940's and 1950's using dolls, and research involving the ethnic identity of children, under the age of 10, beginning only in the early 1990's (2). Furthermore, earlier data involved mostly African American adolescents and focused on their negative experiences and internalization of racism rather than positive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
