ELLEN VS OPRAH
A Closer Look into Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey
Steffany Brinker
University of Maryland University College
Abstract
There are many influential women around the world, but the two that come to mind for me are Ellen
DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey. Both Ellen and Oprah have had their shows for multiple years, but
they offer more than just a talk show. These two accomplished women touch the lives of many
around the world on a daily basis. While these two women are both in the same industry, it is nice to
see they support each other. Neither of these women had an overnight success, they worked through
their struggles to make them who they are today. I think their life struggles makes it more pleasing

According to Oprah Winfrey?Academy of Achievement, (2015), at seventeen, she was offered a job
on a radio station. This radio station served the African American community, which she was very
intrigued about. She won a full scholarship to Tennessee State University, but soon would leave that
opportunity behind. She attended the university, but then decided to take a chance and moved to
Baltimore to join as co–anchor on WJZ–TV News. She later started to co–host, People Are Talking,
where she found her niche in the business. She enjoyed the work she was doing and knew exactly
what she wanted to do with her life. Due to her success on the show, ratings went through the roof
and later she launched, The Oprah Winfrey Show. I think her early success with her radio station set
her up for success in her show today. She was able to easily connect with people on the radio as she

Designing The Costume For The Tin Man
1. Imagine you are designing the costume for the Tin Man. What advantages and disadvantages does
the costume in the film have? (Consider aspects such as mobility, realism, artistic intent, and so on.)
Would you make any changes to the costume for a theater production? Why or why not? If i were to
design a costume for the tin man, some advantages would be price, and portability, but some of the
disadvantaged would be the way it may reflect light and also if it's comfortable for the one who
wears it.
2. In the scene where Dorothy says goodbye to Oz (time code 1:37:38), what is the mood of the
scene? How does the filmmaker achieve this mood? The mood of the scene was very depressing
because of how she accomplished so much and then she had to return back home to her family. The
way that they have the success was to make everyone look sad and silent, even the expression of
tears put out more of the mood of that whole scene. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Challenges Facing International Students
Most international students happen to have some major and minor struggles when they come to the
USA. People from different countries usually have different background, different thoughts,
different culture. Therefore, international students who come to the USA, tend to struggle with some
problems. The three most important challenges international students face can be categorized into
three groups: emotional challenges such as culture shock and homesick, social challenges, and
academic challenges. The emotional struggles that international students have are homesickness and
culture shock. According to Ivan Sekyonda from Uganda, he appreciates the school faculties for
helping him with going through homesickness and culture shock (Sewall, p. 127). Students from
different countries happen to have trouble adapting to American culture that is more liberal. This
inability of getting along with American culture due to culture difference causes homesickness
which makes students want to go back home. Many international students seem to not enjoy their
first year in America for such problems. The social challenges that international students face
include international students only relating to other international students. According to Macalester
College, a group of Chinese students were already bonded altogether within themselves even before
they came to the campus (Fischer, p. 100). Usually, American students find other students, who are
planning go to the same school, on social

A Note On B2b Sales Cycle
If you 're not using –– or have given up on –– landing pages, then you 're missing out on a truly
integral component of the sometimes complex B2B sales cycle.
Whether used as part of a lead or sales funnel... integrated into an email, PPC, or direct mail
campaign... a well–crafted landing page can really boost your conversion rates.
Now there are potentially hundreds of specific steps you can take in order to get the most out of
them. And there are, of course, various ways to test each page element.
Am I recommending that you ignore all the testing and tweaking? Of course not.
But if you want to get the most bang for your buck, you can 't afford to ignore the basics.
So without further ado, here are five steps to creating landing pages that convert.
1. Determine the goal.
The lack of a clearly defined goal is probably the single biggest stumbling block for most people. If
your pages contain six different ideas, all competing for attention, then you 're in for a disastrous
conversion experience.
For example, if you 've recently published three white papers, it would be a huge mistake to design
one landing page for all of them. Studies consistently show that vague or competing themes are a
huge factor in the overall success or failure of a landing page. So instead of cramming multiple ideas
onto one page, be sure to create a separate one for each. If you follow this one step alone, you 'll
likely see at least a double digit improvement in your conversion rate.
2. Keep

Essay on The Representation of Women in Some Like It Hot...
The Representation of Women in Some Like It Hot and Alien 3
This essay will be about how women are and have been represented in films in the past and how
they are represented nowadays. I will be looking at the roles and representations of women in 'Some
Like It Hot' and 'Alien 3'.
'Some Like It Hot' was made in 1958. Marilyn Monroe starts in the comedy as Sugar Cane who is a
very feminine musician. 'Alien 3' on the other hand was made 40 years after and is a sci–fi horror.
Sigourney Weaver is the star of the film and plays the character Lt. Ripley. Unlike Sugar Cane, Lt.
Ripley is a very tough and manly character.
'Some Like It Hot' is about two musicians. They witness a massacre and try to ... Show more content

This shows that all a woman's ambition is, is to be a wife which represents women to be very
shallow and needy. It is ironic that the man Sugar Cane describes as the one she will never fall for, is
the type of man she does fall for.
In the film, Tony Curtis plays Joe who is one of the musicians on the run. When he cross dresses, he
becomes Josephine and becomes close with Sugar. He lures her in and encourages her to confess her
dream husband. He then transforms himself into this character called Junior so he can get her. In the
end, when he confesses that he isn't Josephine or Junior, Sugar Cane doesn't get annoyed that she
was fooled by him. Instead, she runs away with him. This portrays Sugar Cane to be a very narrow–
minded character that has nothing else on her mind.
There are other representations of women in 'Some Like It Hot'. The two musicians who are on the
run have to cross dress as they have got jobs in an all female band. Tony Curtis plays Josephine and
Jack Lemmon plays Daphne. While dressed as women, the two men experience how much women
are discriminated against and used. They react to this by acting how they would expect to women to
act and experience yet even more discrimination. However, their minds don't change in the slightest
and both have Sugar Cane on their minds. They both compete to win her heart and both try getting
very close to her as women.

The Occupational Health And Safety Standards
As safety practitioners, we need to understand that procedures can be the nemesis of any
occupational health and safety (OHS) management system. Getting it wrong can be the difference
between success and failure in safety compliance.
Sometimes procedures are created too rigid and bureaucratic, and other times they're non–specific
and ineffectual. The point is no one wants to be under the burden of unnecessary or unusable
procedures. What is needed is the right balance of simple instructions that are easy to read and
comprehend.
Developing your Safety Procedures
Procedures should communicate to employees what they need to know to do their job safely. Here
are 5 simple steps to follow:
1. Justification – Ensure there is a genuine reason for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Always consider the following options:
Flowchart – This shows a process as a simple diagram. By using a series of symbols and arrows to
indicate flow and action you can outline a process and make it easy to follow.
Tip: Don't complicate your chart with too many symbols or too much text. It should flow naturally
from start to finish and be structured in a logical way.
Photographs or Diagrams – Are commonly used especially where there is difficulty in
communicating due to illiteracy or use of multiple languages. The main goal of visualisation is to
make it possible to absorb large amounts of data quickly.
Tip: The saying "A picture is worth a thousand words" refers to the notion that a complex idea can
be conveyed with just a single still image. However just make sure you check that your image or
diagram is saying the right words to employees.
Step 4: Writing Style.
Remember when you write you need to consider the end–user, the person who has to read and
understand your procedure. To ensure success adopt the following simple rules of writing;
Use plain everyday English words or local language. The use of uncommon, long or complex words
or sentences should be avoided where possible.
Keep to short paragraphs and avoid using too many words. Just be specific enough to communicate
clearly.
Write at the appropriate reading level.
Try to keep the procedure itself to a reasonable size

Literature In Lord Of The Flies And To Kill A Mockingbird
Over the summer I was opened up to a new and adventurous side of literature. From a plane crash
and savagery, to racial issues, to child suffrage it really widened my view on life's hardships.
Reading Ellen Foster, Lord of the Flies, and To Kill a Mockingbird really stretched my imagination.
Each book had there own twists and turns, but I believe they all linked in amazing ways. One way
all three novels connected in my opinion, would be how tenacious kids are when they have to
overcome adversity.
In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, there is a plane crash which abandones a large amount of
little boys with no adults on an island stranded with no food, water, or shelter easily accessible. The
boys struggle to survive through the whole book and end up turning on each other because of a
disagreement of what is more important, a signal fire or hunting. A quote from this book reads, "'Kill
the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in!'" (Golding page. 104). This quote displays what
Jack believes is the right path of the boys surviving on the island, hunting. Ralph on the other hand,
had a different approach of obtaining order. This quote explains just that, "'We've got to have rules
and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything.'"
(Golding page. 40). All being under sixteen of age they shouldn't have to deal with this kind of
situation. They are obviously not responsible enough to survive on their own being that

Strong. Funny. Inspirational. These are only a few words out of many that describe Ellen

Ellen's inspirations helped her in being the first female on the tonight show with Johnny Carson.
Ellen's first TV show was the Open House. She plays the character Margo Van Meter, a real estate
firm secretary in L.A. Ellen finds her place though in another sitcom called, These Friends of Mine.
In this TV show Ellen plays a bookstore employee named Ellen Morgan. Due to the success of the
TV show, Ellen earns four "Outstanding Lead Actress" nominations, a writing Emmy win, and three
Golden Globe nods in its five–year run ("Ellen DeGeneres"). On April 14, 1997, Ellen comes out on
the cover of Time making her the first openly gay TV star. Since the news of Ellen being gay was
released, a record of 42 million people listened to Ellen's "comes out" show. Although with her great
success, religious groups protested the show. ABC cancelled Ellen in 1998. In 2001, after the
cancellation of her show, Ellen made a new show called, The Ellen Show. Although reviewers
praised the show, it did not get a large audience. After the disappointments, DeGeneres's
professional life hit one distinctly positive note, setting the stage for what some have described as
her career's second act. Soon after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, DeGeneres hosted the
prime time Emmy Awards; due to the tragedy the program was twice delayed ("Ellen DeGeneres").
For the next year, Ellen started showing up more and more on TV. She

Examples Of Psychoanalysis In Alien
C. Psychoanalysis as a political weapon in Alien
i. Male action and female inaction There are two major examples of male activeness and female
passiveness in Alien: the chestburster scene and the differences between Ripley and Dallas as the
protagonist. In the iconic chestburster scene the crew are seated peacefully as they prepare to return
to stasis, however this peace is disturbed when Kane convulses and a chestburster bursts out of him.
Only the male characters are active in this scene: Parker and Dallas initially comfort and hold Kane
down, Brett holds Kane's legs down, and Ash runs from the other side (farther aways then Ripley
and Lambert) to help. Ripley and Lambert initially reach out towards Kane but eventually watch in
horror as the alien bursts from him. Dallas, Parker, and Brett were closer to Kane than Ripley so
they have more reason for helping; and Ash is the science officer so it makes sense for him to rush
towards a medical emergency. Switching one of the male characters with a female character could
have expounded on the seriousness of the scene (before the arrival of the chestburster).
While subtle, the difference between the actions taken by Dallas and Ripley exemplify the
heterosexual differences in labor. Dallas' protagonist is constantly in motion: investigating the
signal, defending Ripley from the dead facehugger, and hunting the alien in the vents. Ripley's
actions as protagonist are less active, especially since she follows Dallas' vent plan and

"The Stone Angel" Essay
The Stone Angel
Margaret Laurence's story of The Stone Angel is about the life Hagar Currie an emotionless,
stubborn and proud woman. Margaret Laurence uses this stone angel, originally bought by Hagar's
father, to embody the qualities of Hagar. These virtues are often identical to those one assumes are
possessed by the stone angel and are paralleled many times by Laurence. Throughout the novel,
Hagar relives her life through her memories.
Over the course of the novel, one realizes that Hagar's loneliness and depression are, in fact, brought
on by her pride, detached emotions, obstinacy and ignorance which she uses, subconsciously or not,
to push those who love her most away. Hagar Currie was incapable of loving others, much like ...

a ruler but even as a child, she will not let her tears be seen, she will not let him see that he is hurting
her. Even when her brother Dan is near death, she will not comfort him, for it requires that she act as

thought of pretending to be someone as feeble and weak as their mother. Throughout her marriage,
Hagar never lets Bram know that she enjoyed their lovemaking. "He never knew. I never let him

Franciscan Social Media
Although a majority of public figures do not identify themselves as Franciscan or consciously
follow Franciscan values, plenty of them unconsciously use social media to fulfill Franciscan values
such as creating a caring community, showing compassion, and making peace. Ellen Degeneres,
ranked number four on Forbes Most Influential Women in Media, out ranked public figures such as
Oprah Winfrey, Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters, and Tyra Banks due to her enormous social media
following (Blakeley, 2012). Degeneres uses social medium platforms such as Twitter and Facebook
to foster friendship, spread kindness, care for the poor and oppressed, and promote non–violence.
There are many examples of Degeneres use of Facebook to foster friendship on a global level. A
recent example, just a few weeks ago, the Ellen Degeneres Show Facebook page posted a YouTube
link to a video called "Little Boy Thinks he has No Friends, but he Actually has 102,000 (and
Counting)". Above the link was a comment saying, "I want y'all to meet my new friend, Colin. I
love this story". Over ten thousand people liked and shared the video with words of encouragement
and motivation for the boy who thought he was alone. The posting of this video assures all of the
kids and teenagers that are struggling with depression and lonesomeness that they are not alone, that
not only Ellen supports them, but that thousands of others are with them as well. Many of the

Ellen Degeneres : The Life Of The Life For People's Life
Ellen Degeneres once stated, "Find out who you are and be that person. That's what your soul was
put on this Earth to be. Find the truth, live that truth and everything else will come." Despite her
sexuality differences from others, Ellen makes it possible for people who live with differences to be
one that they desire to be. She does not believe that race, religion, nor sexuality affects a person. She
believes in freedom and equal rights for everyone. Ellen also demonstrates many leadership
qualities, such as, perseverance, positivity, decisive, and most of all inspirational, proving that one
person can truly change someone else's life. She tells her story, starting from her childhood in
Louisiana and Texas to being one of the most recognizable faces on television (Paprocki, Sherry

Character Study Of Finding Dory
Just Keep Swimming:
Character Study of Finding Dory The story "Finding Dory" is about self–determination. Dory,
besides her problem of short–term memory, is serious to find her lost parents. No one can forget
Dory's motto of "Just keep swimming" when she was introduced in "Finding Nemo," where she
keeps encouraging Marlin (Albert Brooks), Nemo's dad to keep going, no matter what the
complications are! Thus, Dory has been viewed as a strong character of self–determination, who
once makes up her mind, tends to achieve her goal. Despite her short–term memory loss, Dory
(Ellen DeGeneres) is determined to reunite with her family no matter what the obstacles in Finding
Dory (2016). Dory's personality is one of the most memorable characteristics of any Disney
character which will be remembered for years to come. Her attitude towards life shows that people
should give others time to express themselves and not judge immediately on the basis of their
character and appearance. Dory's friendly attitude is shown when she meets Hank (Ed O'Neill) who
is a color changing octopus trying to flee from the Marine Life Institute which is located in Morro
Bay, California and wants to retire to an aquarium life in Cleveland, Ohio. Dory does not get scared
or judge Hank on basis of his looks, but instead greets him in a friendly manner and says "Oh, thank
goodness. Hi, I'm Dory." Another instance of Dory's friendly personality is when she makes a deal
with Hank that she will give him her identification tag if he takes her to the tank where her parents
are living. When Hank takes Dory to the Open Ocean exhibit, which is where she remembers that
she lived with her parents, he takes her to the top of the tank and the camera zooms in on Dory
exchanging the tag to Hank and tells him in heartfelt tone "I think I'm gonna remember you." Her
welcoming nature is one of her key attributes in the animated film and it helps her, make her goal a
reality. Her absent–minded personality hurts her when she tries to remember, where her parents
would be. Her poor memory is shown when she tries to recall what exhibit to go into and Hank
believes that her forgetfulness is such a good and not bad thing when he says, "You're lucky. No
memories. No

Ellen Foster : An Adult Who Will Never Give Up On Them
"Every child deserves a champion – an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the
power of connection and insists that they become the best they can possibly be" (Pierson). Kaye
Gibbons' novel, Ellen Foster, recounts the journey of a young girl who is actively searching for her
champion; someone who will take her in and love her as their own. She does this while also
interjecting the experiences she has with her new family. Born as Bertha Kaye Batts in 1960, Kaye
Gibbons was the child of a farmer and grew up poor (Disheroon–Green). Her first novel, Ellen
Foster, began as poem that eventually grew into something much greater ("Kaye Gibbons"). After
the novel published in 1987, Gibbons won two literary awards, the Sue Kaufman Prize for First
Fiction and a citation from the Ernest Hemingway Foundation ("Overview: Ellen Foster"). Despite
being reluctant about revealing the real drive behind Ellen Foster, Kaye Gibbons opened up to the
media. Ellen's character was inspired by Kaye Gibbons herself. Her mother's suicide at ten years
old, an abusive and alcoholic father, and the placements with family members were characteristics
passed on to Ellen Foster (Telgen and Hile). Aside from creating a novel from the perspective of a
young girl and the tribulations that she experiences, Kaye Gibbons also focuses on specific themes
throughout the novel. The main themes that Kaye Gibbons elaborates on in her novel Ellen Foster
are independence, trust, family,

Housing Policies By Max Page And Ellen Pader
Housing codes in this country shape the way we live. They tell us everything from what is
considered to be a bedroom, to how many people can live in one dwelling. Max Page and Ellen
Pader looked at two different examples of the way the US's housing policies have had a major
impact on our society. Page examined the tearing down of the slums in New York City. The
government claimed that the buildings were old and unsafe, and thus needed to be demolished.
Pader looked at eviction of ethnic groups, particularly Latinos, from their homes in Chicago. The
rational for the evictions was that there were too many people occupying one space. This was
unhealthy, and thus whole families lost their homes. In both instances, the government in mandating

In other cultures, such as Latin America, the norms of spatial arrangement are much different.
People routinely sleep in kitchens, hallways and whole families share houses. However these
policies were attempting to Americanize the immigrants, and rid them of their heritage. The codes
also put a burden on the lower class citizens. By defining what a bedroom was, and how many
people can sleep there, the government was telling people what size properties they needed to buy
for their families. For the immigrants, who generally lived all together as a family, it meant that they
were less able to afford good housing. (Pader 883) Families were routinely shunted to the streets for
violations of the codes. However the government saw these steps as necessary. They were
attempting to infuse American values and norms onto the immigrants. Two people per room is
deemed reasonable and justifiable in our culture. It is engrained in our brains that this is just the way
things are. However this spatial arrangement was derived from the lives of upper class Englishmen.
(Pader 888) They came about when the immigrants who originally colonized this country, set the
norms of the society. When new immigrants came over who were seen as inferior, those living here
attempted Americanize them in their image. In the hopes to change their mentality and previous
perception of norms. The other main code imposed on the people in Chicago was a people per space
ratio.

The Makeup Brand Covergirl
When we hear "For me, for one, for all," we generally think of the makeup brand Covergirl.

making it seem that if you use this product you will look young and beautiful. They use Ethos,

ball in the group and feels left out in activities.
In addition, Covergirl also uses pathos. We know they target women because it is makeup. The
products they advertise are for every woman and age in the audience. It makes sense, the older
celebrities are to get older women and younger celebrities get younger women. In majority of the
ads out there the companies try to diversify their product to get more sales. For example, Covergirl
uses Ellen DeGeneres, Rihanna, Sofia Vergara, Queen Latifah, and Drew Barrymore to appeal
different consumers. The diversity helps bring a lot more money in, rather it focusing on one set
group. It helps a lot because many women have some insecurities and don't really feel proud of their
appearance. Their products also help with self–esteem. Many adolescents and adults only feel cute
when they are using the products like mascara. Women may suffer from peer pressure. Their friends
may threaten to stop hanging out with them because they aren't wearing makeup. Covergirl can help
with that to make women feel loved and welcomed with the people around them, but most
importantly with themselves. It makes sense, the older celebrities are to get older women and

Analysis Of Aliens By James Cameron
It takes absolute courage to stare death in the face, stand and fight, especially when death has no
actual face. Aliens, written and directed by James Cameron, follows a former pilot, a group of
marines and a corporate stiff as they go to investigate why they have lost communication with a
colony of people on a planet that the corporation is trying to develop an atmosphere on. The
investigation soon turns into a fight for survival and escape, as the colony has been overrun by
aliens and is now their breeding grounds. Ellen Ripley, who is played by Sigourney Weaver, is the
advisor to the expedition, but quickly becomes the group's anointed leader. Ripley was recovered by
a team, who found her in a state of hibernation, after she had to blow up her ship, because an alien
got on board and killed her entire crew. She had been adrift for almost sixty years in a shuttle pod.
When they got her back to the base, she had these reoccurring nightmares about the alien, such like
it ripping out of her body. At first, the company didn't believe her about the alien when they
debriefed her, but when they lost contact with the colony they asked her to go with the marines, due
to her experience with the creature. When Ripley and her team arrived on the planet, they found one
survivor, a little girl, named Newt, played by Carrie Henn. Ripley develops a strong connection with
Newt, and begins to look after and protect her. Ellen Ripley is established as a strong, female main

Overall, Ellen directed these novels to anyone curious about gays because it shows that although
they might be attracted to someone who is the same sex as them, it does not change one thing about
how of an amazing person they can be on the inside. Secondly, other than Ellen's novels, Ellen
supports the equality of gays as well through her top– hit show. In many of Ellen's shows she brings
people who also have a voice in gay's equality they would like to share, or at times she will stop her
show just to talk about it personally. For instance, in one of her many shows on February 28, 2008
she stopped and started mentioning a tragic story about a fifteen year old boy . Larry King; a
teenage boy who was gay was shot multiple times by one of his classmates, Brandon McInerney.
The reason why Larry was murdered was simply because he asked Brandon to be his valentine
which to Brandon "threatened" him so much he believed he had no other choice . Ellen was heart–
broken by this and felt she had to share his story so the world knows how hard it is for some gays or
lesbians who cannot come forward because of the fear society puts on them. Many people were
touched by this story so Ellen promoted some charities they could donate to show their support like
The Trevor Project; which is a 24/7 suicide prevention helpline for homosexuals . There are

She is regarded as an idol among young actresses and actors who are also members of the LGBT.
Her announcement generated a huge media storm in Canada, Europe and America. Some of her fans
wrote supportive emails and letters in solidarity with her sexuality choice. Ellen DeGeneres regards
1997–98 as the lowest point in her career. Reviews and ratings of her show took a nose dive because
her sexuality was the epic center of the subsequent episodes. At some point, a subsidiary of ABC in
Birmingham declined to air the episode when she declared her sexual orientation. Some of the
corporations withdrew their sponsorships of her show for fear of being linked to her controversy.
Ellen DeGeneres changed America's television industry by coming out as gay (Tauber & Jordan,
2003). She managed to convince the American society that entertainers too should have freedom to
choose their preferred sexual orientation. Most scholars agree that Ellen DeGeneres created
precedence as the first lead actress to announce that she is a member of LGBT on national
television. Soon after her announcement it became a norm for actress, singers, comedians, and
actors to come out of the closet despite the fact that most Americans marginalize members of LGBT.
Most advertisers in her show cancelled their commitment contracts for fear of offending Americans.
The show was later cancelled due to heavy criticism from viewers

As human beings the vast majority of us wish we could change the world, whether that be helping
humans, animals, the environment, it is helping those that cannot help themselves. However, we also
realize to help with these causes it takes money and for the most part a great deal of it. But, some
people are fortunate enough and can help change the lives of many. That is what Ellen DeGeneres
has done with her leadership skills, guidance, celebrity status and wealth. Through her kind heart
and passion for the social good she does everything she can to make the world a better place. It is
true that money can certainly help in spanning social good, however, multiple pennies can also
impact those in need. Social good is something that anyone can do. It is not about celebrity status or
being a millionaire. Social good is about feeling good about helping others when they are in need. It
is about creating a sense of connectedness to humanity and being humble all the while influencing
those that follow you. This is what Ellen DeGeneres is all about. This paper will discuss, Ellen 's

Ellen Foster, Lord Of The Flies, And To Kill A Mockingbird...
Over the summer I was exposed to a new and adventurous side of literature. From a plane crash and
savagery, to racial issues, and child suffrage, it honestly widened my view on life's hardships.
Reading Ellen Foster, Lord of the Flies, and To Kill a Mockingbird truly stretched my imagination.
Each book had their own twists and turns, but I believe they all linked in amazing ways. One way all
three novels connected in my opinion, would be how tenacious kids are when they are required to
overcome adversity. In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, there is a plane crash which
abandoned a large amount of boys with no parental guidance on an island stranded with no food,
water, or an easily accessible shelter. The boys struggled to survive through the whole book and
ended up turning on each other because of a disagreement of what is more important, a signal fire or
hunting. A quote from this book reads, "'Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in!'"
(Golding page. 104). This quote displays what Jack believes is the right path for the boys surviving
on the island. Ralph on the other hand, had a different approach of obtaining order. This quote
explains just that, "'We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're
English, and the English are best at everything.'" (Golding page. 40). All being under the age of
sixteen, they shouldn't be obligated to deal with this kind of situation. They are obviously not

Comparison Between Macbeth And Romeo And Juliet
In both Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare presents to the audience impressive female
characters. These women were bravely defiant in the patriarchal society of the 16th century in which
they lived. Lady Macbeth embraced the fight for power, which was conventionally thought as a
man's deed: Juliet spoke and acted against male authority. Her father's expectation for her marriage
and fate was for Juliet, unbearable. Such rejection and rebellion against male supremacy was not
only highly dangerous to women, but it also definitely shook the stability of patriarchal dominance.
Callaghan (1989) suggested that, under a significant 'religious influence', Renaissance society was
'profoundly hierarchal' , ranking society members in the following order: God, monarch, men, and
women. Therefore, it was compulsory for women to submissively consider themselves as silent and
obedient subjects to their fathers and husbands in order to maintain peaceful ... Show more content

In comparison to Lady Macbeth's earlier use of imagery and words associated with the weird sisters,
we now see her tone of voice disintegrate into a state of helplessness. In this scene, Lady Macbeth is
presented as the vulnerable and pitiful female. "What, will these hands ne'er be clean? .../Here's the
smell of the blood still. All the perfumes/of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand..." Her mental
state was completely crushed by the sense of guilt and she exposed herself as being powerless and
unprotected, thus arousing the audience's sympathy. Even though she was a strong and smart
woman, it did not change the fact that she was indeed only a woman. Through out history, the fight
over the throne has been a game mainly for men. Therefore it was reasonable for Macbeth to

A Book ' Bum Rush The Page ' By Teri Ellen Cross
In the world we live in there are multiple definitions of what beauty is. However is it right to
deemed a certain skin color more beautiful than the other? In our history we are taught that being a
white complexion has many advantages, and that being a dark complexion is a shame. Although that
is history, in our world today believe it or not individuals are still subjected to discrimination
because of their skin color. In a book called "Bum Rush The Page", a poem called "Complected"
written by Teri Ellen Cross, the author indicates the clear epidemic problem of racism and identity
that is occurring nationwide today.
The title of the poem "Complected" gives off a pessimistic tone. The word itself is not a real word, I
believe that the author got this title by piecing the word complexion and complicated together. The
two words completely define the racial discrimination dark complexion individuals encounter. Skin
complexion should not be a complicated matter anymore especially considering our history and all
the terrible acts that's been done. But yet today, our skin color seems to be the only thing that
identifies us, and not what we do or what we have achieved.
The author of the poem writes about two young girls and she is also comparing them as they stand
next to each other side by side. The main focus of the poem is the first girl she starts off writing
about, which is also the one that is "not Venus" ( line 10). This girl has a dark complexion, we know

My Very Good Friend From High School, Maeleigh, And Her...
I interviewed my very good friend from high school, Maeleigh, and her recent girlfriend, Anna.
Maeleigh and Anna have completely different "coming out" stories at this point in their lives.
Growing up with Maeleigh, I was able to see how her life was affected by being gay. I know more
about her lifestyle and story than most would and it was difficult for her to figure herself out. Mae
was very confused and distraught as she got older and she started to realize she was not the so called
"normal" little girl. She had to learn to except herself before she could tell anyone or most
importantly come out to her parents. As for Anna, I have no personal ties to her. Maeleigh met Anna
this year at school; they both attend Manchester University and play on the softball team. They
eventually got together and developed a relationship. Everything between the two is new and they
are learning more about each others stories and how they dealt with coming out. Coming out is one
of the most difficult aspects of being a lesbian. They have spent an extreme amount of time playing
out in their minds how to tell this news to their parents. The scariest part, both have said, would
have to be the thought of being rejected by their families. Maeleigh had known she was different
from everyone since she was in 5th grade. She began to find herself having crushes on girls rather
than boys. She said in 5th grade she was terrified, not knowing why she felt this way. Not knowing

  • 1. Ellen Vs Oprah Winfrey Research Paper 4 ELLEN VS OPRAH A Closer Look into Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey Steffany Brinker University of Maryland University College Abstract There are many influential women around the world, but the two that come to mind for me are Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey. Both Ellen and Oprah have had their shows for multiple years, but they offer more than just a talk show. These two accomplished women touch the lives of many around the world on a daily basis. While these two women are both in the same industry, it is nice to see they support each other. Neither of these women had an overnight success, they worked through their struggles to make them who they are today. I think their life struggles makes it more pleasing and easier for ... This radio station served the African American community, which she was very intrigued about. She won a full scholarship to Tennessee State University, but soon would leave that opportunity behind. She attended the university, but then decided to take a chance and moved to Baltimore to join as co–anchor on WJZ–TV News. She later started to co–host, People Are Talking, where she found her niche in the business. She enjoyed the work she was doing and knew exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Due to her success on the show, ratings went through the roof and later she launched, The Oprah Winfrey Show. I think her early success with her radio station set her up for success in her show today. She was able to easily connect with people on the radio as she does in her ... (Consider aspects such as mobility, realism, artistic intent, and so on.) Would you make any changes to the costume for a theater production? Why or why not? If i were to design a costume for the tin man, some advantages would be price, and portability, but some of the disadvantaged would be the way it may reflect light and also if it's comfortable for the one who wears it. 2. In the scene where Dorothy says goodbye to Oz (time code 1:37:38), what is the mood of the scene? How does the filmmaker achieve this mood? • 7. Challenges Facing International Students Most international students happen to have some major and minor struggles when they come to the USA. People from different countries usually have different background, different thoughts, different culture. Therefore, international students who come to the USA, tend to struggle with some problems. The three most important challenges international students face can be categorized into three groups: emotional challenges such as culture shock and homesick, social challenges, and academic challenges. The emotional struggles that international students have are homesickness and culture shock. According to Ivan Sekyonda from Uganda, he appreciates the school faculties for helping him with going through homesickness and culture shock (Sewall, p. 127). Students from different countries happen to have trouble adapting to American culture that is more liberal. This inability of getting along with American culture due to culture difference causes homesickness which makes students want to go back home. Many international students seem to not enjoy their first year in America for such problems. The social challenges that international students face include international students only relating to other international students. According to Macalester College, a group of Chinese students were already bonded altogether within themselves even before they came to the campus (Fischer, p. 100). Usually, American students find other students, who are planning go to the same school, on social ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. A Note On B2b Sales Cycle If you 're not using –– or have given up on –– landing pages, then you 're missing out on a truly integral component of the sometimes complex B2B sales cycle. Whether used as part of a lead or sales funnel... integrated into an email, PPC, or direct mail campaign... a well–crafted landing page can really boost your conversion rates. Now there are potentially hundreds of specific steps you can take in order to get the most out of them. If your pages contain six different ideas, all competing for attention, then you 're in for a disastrous conversion experience. For example, if you 've recently published three white papers, it would be a huge mistake to design one landing page for all of them. Studies consistently show that vague or competing themes are a huge factor in the overall success or failure of a landing page. So instead of cramming multiple ideas onto one page, be sure to create a separate one for each. If you follow this one step alone, you 'll likely see at least a double digit improvement in your conversion rate. 2. Keep ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Representation of Women in Some Like It Hot and Alien 3 This essay will be about how women are and have been represented in films in the past and how they are represented nowadays. I will be looking at the roles and representations of women in 'Some Like It Hot' and 'Alien 3'. 'Some Like It Hot' was made in 1958. Marilyn Monroe starts in the comedy as Sugar Cane who is a very feminine musician. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This shows that all a woman's ambition is, is to be a wife which represents women to be very shallow and needy. It is ironic that the man Sugar Cane describes as the one she will never fall for, is the type of man she does fall for. In the film, Tony Curtis plays Joe who is one of the musicians on the run. When he cross dresses, he becomes Josephine and becomes close with Sugar. He lures her in and encourages her to confess her dream husband. He then transforms himself into this character called Junior so he can get her. In the end, when he confesses that he isn't Josephine or Junior, Sugar Cane doesn't get annoyed that she was fooled by him. Instead, she runs away with him. This portrays Sugar Cane to be a very narrow– minded character that has nothing else on her mind. There are other representations of women in 'Some Like It Hot'. The two musicians who are on the run have to cross dress as they have got jobs in an all female band. Tony Curtis plays Josephine and Jack Lemmon plays Daphne. While dressed as women, the two men experience how much women are discriminated against and used. They react to this by acting how they would expect to women to act and experience yet even more discrimination. However, their minds don't change in the slightest and both have Sugar Cane on their minds. They both compete to win her heart and both try getting very close to her as women. An ... Getting it wrong can be the difference between success and failure in safety compliance. Sometimes procedures are created too rigid and bureaucratic, and other times they're non–specific and ineffectual. The point is no one wants to be under the burden of unnecessary or unusable procedures. What is needed is the right balance of simple instructions that are easy to read and comprehend. By using a series of symbols and arrows to indicate flow and action you can outline a process and make it easy to follow. Tip: Don't complicate your chart with too many symbols or too much text. It should flow naturally from start to finish and be structured in a logical way. Photographs or Diagrams – Are commonly used especially where there is difficulty in communicating due to illiteracy or use of multiple languages. The main goal of visualisation is to make it possible to absorb large amounts of data quickly. Tip: The saying "A picture is worth a thousand words" refers to the notion that a complex idea can be conveyed with just a single still image. However just make sure you check that your image or diagram is saying the right words to employees. Step 4: Writing Style. Remember when you write you need to consider the end–user, the person who has to read and understand your procedure. To ensure success adopt the following simple rules of writing; Use plain everyday English words or local language. The use of uncommon, long or complex words or sentences should be avoided where possible. Keep to short paragraphs and avoid using too many words. Just be specific enough to communicate clearly. • 18. Literature In Lord Of The Flies And To Kill A Mockingbird Over the summer I was opened up to a new and adventurous side of literature. From a plane crash and savagery, to racial issues, to child suffrage it really widened my view on life's hardships. Reading Ellen Foster, Lord of the Flies, and To Kill a Mockingbird really stretched my imagination. Each book had there own twists and turns, but I believe they all linked in amazing ways. One way all three novels connected in my opinion, would be how tenacious kids are when they have to overcome adversity. In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, there is a plane crash which abandones a large amount of little boys with no adults on an island stranded with no food, water, or shelter easily accessible. The boys struggle to survive through the whole book and end up turning on each other because of a disagreement of what is more important, a signal fire or hunting. A quote from this book reads, "'Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in!'" (Golding page. 104). This quote displays what Jack believes is the right path of the boys surviving on the island, hunting. Ralph on the other hand, had a different approach of obtaining order. This quote explains just that, "'We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything.'" (Golding page. 40). All being under sixteen of age they shouldn't have to deal with this kind of situation. They are obviously not responsible enough to survive on their own being that ... • 22. Examples Of Psychoanalysis In Alien C. Psychoanalysis as a political weapon in Alien i. Male action and female inaction There are two major examples of male activeness and female passiveness in Alien: the chestburster scene and the differences between Ripley and Dallas as the protagonist. In the iconic chestburster scene the crew are seated peacefully as they prepare to return to stasis, however this peace is disturbed when Kane convulses and a chestburster bursts out of him. Only the male characters are active in this scene: Parker and Dallas initially comfort and hold Kane down, Brett holds Kane's legs down, and Ash runs from the other side (farther aways then Ripley and Lambert) to help. Ripley and Lambert initially reach out towards Kane but eventually watch in horror as the alien bursts from him. Dallas, Parker, and Brett were closer to Kane than Ripley so they have more reason for helping; and Ash is the science officer so it makes sense for him to rush towards a medical emergency. Switching one of the male characters with a female character could have expounded on the seriousness of the scene (before the arrival of the chestburster). While subtle, the difference between the actions taken by Dallas and Ripley exemplify the heterosexual differences in labor. Dallas' protagonist is constantly in motion: investigating the signal, defending Ripley from the dead facehugger, and hunting the alien in the vents. Ripley's actions as protagonist are less active, especially since she follows Dallas' vent plan and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Margaret Laurence uses this stone angel, originally bought by Hagar's father, to embody the qualities of Hagar. These virtues are often identical to those one assumes are possessed by the stone angel and are paralleled many times by Laurence. Throughout the novel, Hagar relives her life through her memories. Over the course of the novel, one realizes that Hagar's loneliness and depression are, in fact, brought on by her pride, detached emotions, obstinacy and ignorance which she uses, subconsciously or not, to push those who love her most away. • 42. Character Study Of Finding Dory Just Keep Swimming: Character Study of Finding Dory The story "Finding Dory" is about self–determination. Dory, besides her problem of short–term memory, is serious to find her lost parents. No one can forget Dory's motto of "Just keep swimming" when she was introduced in "Finding Nemo," where she keeps encouraging Marlin (Albert Brooks), Nemo's dad to keep going, no matter what the complications are! Thus, Dory has been viewed as a strong character of self–determination, who once makes up her mind, tends to achieve her goal. Despite her short–term memory loss, Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) is determined to reunite with her family no matter what the obstacles in Finding Dory (2016). Dory's personality is one of the most memorable characteristics of any Disney character which will be remembered for years to come. Her attitude towards life shows that people should give others time to express themselves and not judge immediately on the basis of their character and appearance. Dory's friendly attitude is shown when she meets Hank (Ed O'Neill) who is a color changing octopus trying to flee from the Marine Life Institute which is located in Morro Bay, California and wants to retire to an aquarium life in Cleveland, Ohio. Dory does not get scared or judge Hank on basis of his looks, but instead greets him in a friendly manner and says "Oh, thank goodness. Hi, I'm Dory." Another instance of Dory's friendly personality is when she makes a deal with Hank that she will give him her identification tag if he takes her to the tank where her parents are living. When Hank takes Dory to the Open Ocean exhibit, which is where she remembers that she lived with her parents, he takes her to the top of the tank and the camera zooms in on Dory exchanging the tag to Hank and tells him in heartfelt tone "I think I'm gonna remember you." Her welcoming nature is one of her key attributes in the animated film and it helps her, make her goal a reality. Her absent–minded personality hurts her when she tries to remember, where her parents would be. Her poor memory is shown when she tries to recall what exhibit to go into and Hank believes that her forgetfulness is such a good and not bad thing when he says, "You're lucky. No memories. No ... Ellen Foster : An Adult Who Will Never Give Up On Them "Every child deserves a champion – an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best they can possibly be" (Pierson). Kaye Gibbons' novel, Ellen Foster, recounts the journey of a young girl who is actively searching for her champion; someone who will take her in and love her as their own. She does this while also interjecting the experiences she has with her new family. Born as Bertha Kaye Batts in 1960, Kaye Gibbons was the child of a farmer and grew up poor (Disheroon–Green). Her first novel, Ellen Foster, began as poem that eventually grew into something much greater ("Kaye Gibbons"). After the novel published in 1987, Gibbons won two literary awards, the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction and a citation from the Ernest Hemingway Foundation ("Overview: Ellen Foster"). Despite being reluctant about revealing the real drive behind Ellen Foster, Kaye Gibbons opened up to the media. Ellen's character was inspired by Kaye Gibbons herself. Her mother's suicide at ten years old, an abusive and alcoholic father, and the placements with family members were characteristics passed on to Ellen Foster (Telgen and Hile). Aside from creating a novel from the perspective of a young girl and the tribulations that she experiences, Kaye Gibbons also focuses on specific themes throughout the novel. They tell us everything from what is considered to be a bedroom, to how many people can live in one dwelling. Max Page and Ellen Pader looked at two different examples of the way the US's housing policies have had a major impact on our society. Page examined the tearing down of the slums in New York City. The government claimed that the buildings were old and unsafe, and thus needed to be demolished. Pader looked at eviction of ethnic groups, particularly Latinos, from their homes in Chicago. The rational for the evictions was that there were too many people occupying one space. This was unhealthy, and thus whole families lost their homes. People routinely sleep in kitchens, hallways and whole families share houses. However these policies were attempting to Americanize the immigrants, and rid them of their heritage. The codes also put a burden on the lower class citizens. By defining what a bedroom was, and how many people can sleep there, the government was telling people what size properties they needed to buy for their families. For the immigrants, who generally lived all together as a family, it meant that they were less able to afford good housing. (Pader 883) Families were routinely shunted to the streets for violations of the codes. However the government saw these steps as necessary. They were attempting to infuse American values and norms onto the immigrants. Two people per room is deemed reasonable and justifiable in our culture. It is engrained in our brains that this is just the way things are. However this spatial arrangement was derived from the lives of upper class Englishmen. At some point, a subsidiary of ABC in Birmingham declined to air the episode when she declared her sexual orientation. Some of the corporations withdrew their sponsorships of her show for fear of being linked to her controversy. Ellen DeGeneres changed America's television industry by coming out as gay (Tauber & Jordan, 2003). • 62. Ellen Foster, Lord Of The Flies, And To Kill A Mockingbird... Over the summer I was exposed to a new and adventurous side of literature. From a plane crash and savagery, to racial issues, and child suffrage, it honestly widened my view on life's hardships. Reading Ellen Foster, Lord of the Flies, and To Kill a Mockingbird truly stretched my imagination. Each book had their own twists and turns, but I believe they all linked in amazing ways. One way all three novels connected in my opinion, would be how tenacious kids are when they are required to overcome adversity. In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, there is a plane crash which abandoned a large amount of boys with no parental guidance on an island stranded with no food, water, or an easily accessible shelter. The boys struggled to survive through the whole book and ended up turning on each other because of a disagreement of what is more important, a signal fire or hunting. A quote from this book reads, "'Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in!'" (Golding page. 104). This quote displays what Jack believes is the right path for the boys surviving on the island. Ralph on the other hand, had a different approach of obtaining order. This quote explains just that, "'We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything.'" (Golding page. 40). All being under the age of sixteen, they shouldn't be obligated to deal with this kind of situation. They are obviously not responsible enough to survive on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. Comparison Between Macbeth And Romeo And Juliet In both Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare presents to the audience impressive female characters. These women were bravely defiant in the patriarchal society of the 16th century in which they lived. Lady Macbeth embraced the fight for power, which was conventionally thought as a man's deed: Juliet spoke and acted against male authority. Her father's expectation for her marriage and fate was for Juliet, unbearable. Such rejection and rebellion against male supremacy was not only highly dangerous to women, but it also definitely shook the stability of patriarchal dominance. Callaghan (1989) suggested that, under a significant 'religious influence', Renaissance society was 'profoundly hierarchal' , ranking society members in the following order: God, monarch, men, and women. Therefore, it was compulsory for women to submissively consider themselves as silent and obedient subjects to their fathers and husbands in order to maintain peaceful ... In comparison to Lady Macbeth's earlier use of imagery and words associated with the weird sisters, we now see her tone of voice disintegrate into a state of helplessness. In this scene, Lady Macbeth is presented as the vulnerable and pitiful female. "What, will these hands ne'er be clean? .../Here's the smell of the blood still. All the perfumes/of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand..." Her mental state was completely crushed by the sense of guilt and she exposed herself as being powerless and unprotected, thus arousing the audience's sympathy. Even though she was a strong and smart woman, it did not change the fact that she was indeed only a woman. Through out history, the fight over the throne has been a game mainly for men. The clothes she wears to show off her curvaceous body affects what young girls are wearing today. They're getting the wrong attention and shouldn't focus on looking sexy; kids should focus on their education. Nicki does say on an interview with BET that she feels guilty about young people listening to her music. "It makes me feel guilty because I know how I am with my 12–year old brother... very strict. • 72. A Book ' Bum Rush The Page ' By Teri Ellen Cross In the world we live in there are multiple definitions of what beauty is. However is it right to deemed a certain skin color more beautiful than the other? In our history we are taught that being a white complexion has many advantages, and that being a dark complexion is a shame. Although that is history, in our world today believe it or not individuals are still subjected to discrimination because of their skin color. In a book called "Bum Rush The Page", a poem called "Complected" written by Teri Ellen Cross, the author indicates the clear epidemic problem of racism and identity that is occurring nationwide today. The title of the poem "Complected" gives off a pessimistic tone. The word itself is not a real word, I believe that the author got this title by piecing the word complexion and complicated together. The two words completely define the racial discrimination dark complexion individuals encounter. Skin complexion should not be a complicated matter anymore especially considering our history and all the terrible acts that's been done. But yet today, our skin color seems to be the only thing that identifies us, and not what we do or what we have achieved. The author of the poem writes about two young girls and she is also comparing them as they stand next to each other side by side. The main focus of the poem is the first girl she starts off writing about, which is also the one that is "not Venus" ( line 10). This girl has a dark complexion, we know this ... • 76. I know more about her lifestyle and story than most would and it was difficult for her to figure herself out. Mae was very confused and distraught as she got older and she started to realize she was not the so called "normal" little girl. She had to learn to except herself before she could tell anyone or most importantly come out to her parents. As for Anna, I have no personal ties to her. Maeleigh met Anna this year at school; they both attend Manchester University and play on the softball team. They eventually got together and developed a relationship. Everything between the two is new and they are learning more about each others stories and how they dealt with coming out. Coming out is one of the most difficult aspects of being a lesbian. They have spent an extreme amount of time playing out in their minds how to tell this news to their parents. The scariest part, both have said, would have to be the thought of being rejected by their families. Maeleigh had known she was different from everyone since she was in 5th grade. She began to find herself having crushes on girls rather than boys. She said in 5th grade she was terrified, not knowing why she felt this way. Not knowing the reasons why she felt ...
