It's no secret that our educational system has flaws, and that policymakers are often deeply divided over how to address those flaws. One of the more
divisive issues in education today is the creation and implementation of a national set of educational standards, particularly in the subjects of
mathematics, science and English. Some people believe that creating a national curriculum and applying it in all schools across the nation will help to
improve our educational system; others believe that the argument over national standards is merely distracting from the real problems, and that a

In America, the state of education has always been a pressing concern, perhaps now more than ever. Improving education has been proven to strengthen
the nation time and time again, specifically with regard to science, mathematics and technology. Ten years after the start of the Cold War on October 4,

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) curriculum in schools is undergoing a revolution in public education. This revolution is
sparked by an increase in federal funding over the last decade. Between the years of 2011 and 2015, the federal government alone invested between
three and 3.7 billion dollars yearly for STEM education (Johnson, 2012) (White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, 2014) and new STEM
educational instructional strategies (Bruce–Dacis, Gubbins, Gilson, Villanueva, & Foreman, 2014). Despite these new investments and changes, many
students are neither enrolling nor excelling in STEM programming, particularly students of color (Museus, Palmer, Davis, & Maramba, 2011).
Concurrently, many of the areas of greatest economic opportunity exist in STEM related fields (National Research Council, 2011). In order to
overcome the opportunity gap that exists between White students and students of color, it is essential for schools and districts to research and
implement best practices related to STEM in classrooms. The practices must not only be based in strong pedagogy and professional awareness, but also
include culturally responsive practices both within the classroom and the building (Johnson, Peters–Burton, & Moore, 2016)and development of
STEM mentors both in and out of the classroom (Ware & Stein, 2013).

In the farming society of the early 1800's, education was not possible for many children. Horace Mann, a farm boy himself and an early advocate for

High stakes testing is still utilized based on standards taught, but the curriculum is aligned throughout the United States, knows as the Common Core
Standards. The Common Core standards are based on continuous improvement practices designed to meet more rigorous expectations through
meaningful learning (Darling–Hammond, Wilhoit, and Pittenger, 2014). The government has hopes that the failures of high stakes testing in the past
will be replaced with high quality assessments aligned to the common core curriculum. These assessments not only include state–designed tests for

Technology And The Use Of Technology In Public Education
Public education was first introduced to the United States in 1635 with the opening of the Boston Latin School (Boston, MA). The one–room,
boys–only schoolhouse, was the work of Reverend John Cotton and focused on teaching humanities and family virtues (Boston Latin School, 2015). As
society evolved, the education system continually developed and made advancements. The end of the eighteenth century marked an emergence of
common schools, which provided education for wealthy students. By the mid– eighteenth century, the focus of education shifted from teaching virtues
to a focus on academics, and by the early 1900s compulsory attendance laws were enacted in most states (The American Board, 2015).
Public education has been prevalent in the United States for more than 400 years, but the use of technology in education is a relatively new concept
(Suzie, 2011). The overhead projector was first introduced into the classroom in the 1930s, followed by headphones, videotapes, and copy machines in
the 1950s. In 1972, the Scantron was introduced, and by the late 1980s personal computers for teachers appeared in the classroom. Early technology
changed the education system by reducing the amount of time teachers spent grading and preparing and allowed teachers to provide students with
more immediate feedback (Purdue University, 2016).
Early technology influenced the way teachers taught, but the creation of the World Wide Web in 1990 started the technology revolution, which was

The education industry has many laws and regulations that protects the teachers and students. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
was established in 2004. This is a federal law that governs how public agencies and states serve children with disabilities from birth to age 21. This act
consists of different parts and the second part addresses the education of school age children with disabilities. This is to ensure that every child with a
disability has a free public education available to them. They also have related services meant to satisfy their unique needs and to prepare them for
employment, a future education, and independent living. Local and state educational agencies receive funding through IDEA to help them achieve
these goals and objectives. Another federal law that affects the education of students with disabilities is Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. It was
established in 1973. This act prohibits al entities that receive federal funding, public and private, from discriminating the disabled. It is also known as
the "civil rights" law for students with learning disabilities. The protections provided in this act are less specific than IDEA but it covers a vaster
majority of people. It covers the handicap in any program but is also fit for school age students with learning disabilities and their rights, along with
their parents. Congress amended the Americans with Disabilities Act in 2008. This affects the students with disabilities
