Negative Effects Of Music Streaming
The internet that we know and love today, was invented in the early 90's. While it did not gain much popularity during its early years, it is now a
global network devised of millions of computers. The internet itself does many great things, but how has it changed our music? Does it sound
different? And if it is in what ways does it sound different? Also, is it distributed differently?
The internet changed music in many ways, but one important way is music streaming. Music streaming means listening to music in "real time", instead
of downloading a file to your computer or device and listening to it later. Many artists believe that music streaming services such as Spotify or Pandora
don't reward them enough for the right to play their music. Artists want people to purchase songs and albums through traditional ways, this includes
stores or iTunes or anywhere else (Alexander 2015).
"At the recent star–studded Grammy Awards, a number of artists including Jennifer Hudson and Maroon 5's Adam Levine publicly committed to
joining forces in order to hold back the oncoming tidal wave of streaming, which threatens to change the entire industry model and make it more
difficult for artists to monetize their content off traditional platforms – especially their greatest commodity: their music." (Alexander 2015). This quote
concludes that many artists don't like the idea of music streaming.
However, music streaming may have some positive effects too. Music streaming allows for unknown

Live Streaming Video Game Footage
Live streaming video game footage is becoming an increasingly bigger phenomenon in the gaming world. Already some forty–five million gamers go
on Twitch every month to stream, watch, and chat about games. And that's just one streaming platform, there are others platforms, like YouTube
gaming, just to name one. But streaming is traditionally something that was done from a PC and pc games like DOTA, Counterstrike, and StarCraft
dominate the streaming scene. But with the newest generation of consoles, streaming from consoles became a reality. Microsoft's Xbox allows gamers
to download a free Twitch app and begin streaming just by using voice activation. Sony's PlayStation allows gamers to link their console with their

It only has dimensions of 0.4 by 0.6 inches which it makes slightly more compact than the average streaming mic; but that is understandable given
that this mic is intended for consoles first and foremost. It feels light in your hand, and can easily be moved around. Furthermore, because it is a
USB mic, it is very easy to maneuver the mic, or just completely change your entire setup. In terms of look the Turtle Beach does not have very
many options at the moment; there are only two color options, black or silver. It is not revolutionary by any means, and it looks fairly standard in
terms of design, size, and appearance. But overall, it is a decent, compact streaming mic. Universal compatibility While many of Turtle Beach's
headsets have worked with both Sony consoles and Microsoft consoles, Turtle Beach has gun to lean towards Sony in terms of console headsets; just
two years ago Turtle Beach agreed to manufacture Sony's official PS4 headsets. But console gamers will be happy to know that the digital streaming
mic works on any console. The mic boasts universal plug and play compatibility with PlayStation,

Streaming And The Future Of The Music Industry
Streaming & The Future of The Music Industry The dawn of the internet brought forth a revolution that, by now, has seeped its way in the the very
fibers of almost every human experience. Education has changed. Communication has changed. Entertainment has changed. Business has changed.
Entire industries have been built, and destroyed, by the information age. The music industry, in particular, has felt both. With precursors of the
Compact Disc (CD) and digital music formats, Shawn Fanning single handedly eviscerated the music industry. Napster, his peer to peer mass file
sharing service, is what landed the fatal blow, and the industry has been bleeding out since.
Many have tried to sew this wound shut. Most prominently Apple, with their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Streaming has obvious limitations though. Access to the network that sends the information is required. This is usually achieved by a connection to the
internet. The strength of the connection drastically affects the quality of the stream. This entire process can be understood through viewing a video on
YouTube, arguably the most popular video streaming service of all time. YouTube hosts a video that is saved to its server through its website. To view
it, you must connect to the YouTube website through the internet. There you can view the video without having to download and store it on your
device. This idea is similar to that of radio and television broadcasting where streaming uses the internet as its medium for travel instead of radio or
electromagnetic waves.
Most would associate the beginnings of media streaming with the back half of the 2000s, which is when it first amassed global popularity. Surprisingly,
the idea to stream media through the internet had been floating around computer and entertainment industries since the 1990s. Even the current model
for subscription based music streaming services had been presented previously. MusicNet was the brainchild of RealNetworks and the major record
labels. It was their

Research Report : The Syncopate Team
Results on paper prototype survey
The Syncopate team has conducted a survey on professor Bob Lyons ' students in his Introduction to Music Industry class through survey monkey,
which we believe demonstrates the potential and necessity of a app which provides music recommendation from family and friends instead of
algorithms, and have more features than a ordinary music messaging app.
Using survey monkey, we have gathered responses from undergrad music industry students, which are aware of current music recommendation and
discovery applications provided on the market, and have experience in recommending and been recommended music from different resources. We have

streaming services in the past two weeks, only 43% of the subjects received over three recommendations from their friends and families. However,
data shows that users are 5.72% more likely to listen to the music recommended from friends and family than from streaming services again. Both
channels showed a high level of confidence that users will receive a recommendation that they will enjoy, as 61.54 of the subjects said that they have a
confidence level more than neutral that they will enjoy a song recommended by friends and family, which is 3% higher than recommendations from
streaming services. One important discovery on the confidence level that is rather remarkable is that of all of the users, not a single one has chosen
"least confident" when we asked than how confident a user will enjoy a recommendation from friends and family, showing that everyone has a
fundamental amount of faith in proposals given by friends and family.
We found out that when a user discovers a new music piece, 98% of the subjects intend to seek out more music by the artist discovered, while 87%

Netflix As A Provider Of A Subscription Service For Streaming
Through innovation, the media streaming provider, Netflix, has achieved competitive advantage in the global market. Netflix operates as a provider
of a subscription service for streaming movies and television episodes over the Internet. Originally founded in California in 1997 as a mail order DVD
rental service with a flat monthly subscription rate, allowing consumers to benefit from an unlimited number of rentals and no late fees, Netflix has
grown to dominate their market and experience minimal direct competition by seizing the "first to market" competitive advantage. Now known as the
primary provider of Internet only streaming media, Netflix has grown to have a market capitalisation of US$41.1 billion (as of May 2016) from their
previous US$3 billion (in January 2013).
Netflix succeeded in basic terms by keeping it simple. From the beginning of the DVD rental service to the creation of an online streaming website it
has been able to keep the processes easy and corner its market. Reed Hastings, the C.E.O and co–founder of Netflix took advantage of two emerging
technologies, DVDs and websites. His idea was simple, why not combine the two and deliver DVDs to the homes of consumers and provide them
with a simple website from which they can order films. Hastings marketed his service at the two things he believed every individual wanted to save
on, time and money. However, after a few years of enjoying the success from the DVD rental service Hastings felt confident that films

Foxtel Rebranding Essay
Foxtel Considers Rebranding but Not Likely to Happen Soon
Foxtel has been the go–to pay TV service for many Australians since time immemorial, but its recent merger with News Corp's Fox Sports brings the
possibility of rebranding closer to actuality. The unification of the two companies was announced in August of last year and was finally completed
weeks ago, two months earlier than anticipated.
News Corp now holds 65 percent of the new Foxtel while Telstra holds 35 percent. The amalgamation of Foxtel and Fox Sports, two of the biggest
players in the country's media industry, instigates the question everyone has in mind – will Foxtel's name be transformed alongside its overall business
structure as a result of News Corp gaining major control? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is reported to be a long–term consideration but only after the newly merged business completes its overhaul. News Corp Australasia chairman
Michael Miller explained that their initial focus will be to maximise the collaboration of the two businesses along with their broadcast brands. Adding
the issue of rebranding into the mix will only serve as a distraction and is not in line with their current primary objective.
Sources also revealed that changing the Foxtel brand may have been considered for some time, but some executives, including new chief executive
Patrick Delany believed it was somehow pointless to introduce rebranding if there aren't new product offerings to attract consumers. The rationale
would be that rebranding serves no purpose without new services to justify the said name modification.
Nevertheless, the supposed–to–be grounds behind the planned rebranding would be to give the company a literally fresh start in the form of a new
name in order to eliminate the deep–rooted consumer perception about Foxtel being old and costly. This is why Foxtel's subscription costs have seen
substantial decreases in the past four years while still incorporating the newest technology as part of its service

Television And The Digital Age
For the past century, modern technologies have made the distribution of news and entertainment more efficient. In the digital age, the media is an
imperative element of everyday culture (Silverstone, 2004). There is no denying the indispensability of television as the central hub as represented in
the quotation: "In my heart I will take my television set with me. I love you." – Suicide note of New York school boy after his father banned him from
watching television (Sunday Times as cited in Silverstone, 2004). Although the television was once an essential part of the social sphere, advancements
in the internet has developed flexible Streaming Videos On–Demand services such as Netflix and Stan which displace some of the demand for cable
and free television. The different temporalities of both mediums changes the way consumers use these services and thus transforms its relationship to
public life.
HISTORY OF TELEVISION
Television has been an crucial part of the household since the 20th century, as a medium for traditional households to come together and enjoy a
program. The significance of television is encapsulated through the central placement of the television set in the common household. Traditionally,
television was the main source of news and regarded as the "social centre". Everyone had to keep up to date to engage in "water cooler" conversations
in order to be "connected". In the "Dailiness in Radio, Television and Modern Life" reading, Scannell describes media as a

Demand Music Streaming And The Modern Music Industry
On–Demand Music Streaming and the Modern Music Industry
In October 2014, Taylor Swift released her latest studio album 1989, and by year's end it had become 2014's best–selling album with over 3.6 million
copies purchased. Many fans had also anticipated listening to her newest work through the popular on–demand music streaming service Spotify.
Instead, a week after the album's premiere, Taylor Swift pulled her entire discography from the site (Mansfield). Her actions have since sparked a
debate over the impact of on–demand music streaming in today's music industry. Currently, on–demand music services are most beneficial to
customers, major music labels, and well–known artists.
What exactly is media streaming? In the past, digital media required devices to have large amounts of local, internal storage to hold content libraries
for playback. Instead, streaming allows for media consumption via temporary downloads from online servers which are deleted once playback is
complete. Music streaming is not new, as internet radio services like Pandora have been around for over a decade ("About Pandora"). Such services
allow for the creation of custom stations through user feedback about musical tastes. While this allows for greater personalization than traditional radio
stations, the drawbacks include the inability to select specific songs, repeat previously played tracks, create playlists, or listen to entire albums.
On–demand services, on the other hand, allow for all of this in

Streaming Media and Netflix
Netflix is an American company that provides video rental and on demand video streaming by way of either the mail or streaming through the
internet. The company was founded in 1997 in Silicon Valley California by Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings. The idea for this DVD rental service
came about when Reed Hastings was charged with a late fee when renting a movie and he questioned why he should have a time restriction on how
long he is able to rent the movie. In April of 1998, the Netflix website was launched and they developed the concept of unlimited rentals with no
shipping fees or late fees. In September of 2002, an article in The New York Times article stated that Netflix had around almost 670,000 subscribers.
At the end of 2002, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead, three weeks later, an announcement was made that Netflix had changed their mind. They decided to go back on what they said and decided
they were going to keep all their services under the one same name that everyone was already familiar with after all. Steve Swasey, a representative
for the company was quoted saying, "We underestimated the appeal of the single Web site and a single service." This ended the creation of the idea of
Qwikster but because of the confusing almost–name change that was soon reversed and the raised prices they lost close to 800,000 fewer subscribers.
This number of lost customers came to a shock to almost everyone. This was the first significant decline the company experienced and is a clear
example of a company making a decision without considering the public 's interest and opinions causing a significant have an impact on their profits.
Netflix is just one example of the impact of technology on American family life. Subscribers to Netflix can now video stream movies to their
computers and television with one click. This shifts consumers from looking outside the home for entertainment to becoming more insular in their
hobbies. A recent article in the New York times cited how the former digital divide is closing and more poor American families are wired to use
technology. This means that these families like the more affluent ones are spending less time together as

Case Study: SWOT Analysis of Netflix By: Ashley Avallone Executive Summary Netflix started as an online based movie rental service in 1999
when it was created by founder Reed Hastings, the current CEO of the company. Hastings' goal for the company was to be "the world's best Internet
movie service provider and to deliver a growing subscriber base and earnings per share every year" (Thompson, C–92). The company has been able to
become a leader in the movie rental and streaming industry for several reasons. Netflix was an early entrant to the industry and has been able to build
an extensive subscriber base due to aggressive promoting and advertising of the brand, exclusive contracts with movie suppliers, and their superior...

Streaming videos is cheaper than distributing actual DVD's because companies do not have to maintain a strong distribution center and vast
inventory; both of which take up time and money among other resources. Another advantage of streaming videos is that consumers have continuous
access to movies and no longer have to leave their home. This high demand for movies has spurred intense competition among firms looking to
profit off of streaming music digitally. Netflix was one of the original companies that realized the trend towards streaming and have lead the
competition since. Today the top five best companies that provide media streaming services are Netflix, Amazon's Video on Demand, Hulu Plus,
Vudu, and Itunes (Warren). While the subscriptions for these services have increased in recent years, there are some areas of concern for these firms.
The economy and market environment in technology is always changing; innovative new products replace old ideas on a daily basis. Netflix has
several advantages and disadvantages that, depending on how the company reacts, will dictate their overall success. By using a SWOT analysis we can
easily see internal areas that Netflix is strong in, where they need work, and how the external environment will provide them with obstacles as well as
great potential opportunities. Analysis Strengths Netflix has several key attributes that make it a

How Your Local Restaurant Doesn 't Charge
Your local restaurant doesn 't charge you a fixed price and tell you to gorge yourself on whatever comes out of the kitchen. Most restaurants operate on
an Г la carte basis, allowing diners to choose foods they like from the menu and eat only what they want (and can afford). If you don't like broccoli
or raspberries, you don 't pay for them; if you're a vegetarian you don 't subsidize the meal of the carnivore at the next table.
Cable companies don't operate like that. Comcast and AT&T package all that "food" and shove it down their customers' throats like the Widette family
descending on a smorgasbord. Youwant a serving of TVLand so you can watch reruns of "Golden Girls"? You gotta take the Golf Channel, too. Wanna

Live Streaming
Live streaming media is the transmission over the Internet of video of an event as it happens. Streaming is a form of online video in which the site
sends video footage to a user's machine "on the fly" rather than as a complete file. It's akin to the difference between watching a TV show as it airs
and watching a DVD.
Live streaming media is different than on–demand streaming. With the latter, the content has previously been recorded. The user then accesses it at a
time of their choice, though it is still streamed to their machine rather than downloaded as a complete file. YouTube is probably the best known
on–demand streaming site.

Webcasting is broadcast to other computers so the other members can watch, and participation is not always part of the broadcast. Webconferencing is
not for watching, but so each member can speak and participate in a conference over the Internet. The other reason is the flow of the video, because

The integration of tech and media by Netflix and other streaming services makes defining this industry challenging. The Global Industry Classification
Standard (GICS) classifies Netflix as a member of the "Internet and Direct Marketing Retail" industry (Christian and Spooner, 2017). However, Netflix
and similar companies are operating in a new space that is challenging the status quo of several industries. This new industry is video streaming. Key
players within the video streaming industry include Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu. The biggest consumers of this service are Millennials. The
industry targets this consumer base because over "80% of Millennials are watching long–form content" through streaming services and over the Internet

Although, Netflix has dominated the industry for the past decade, its key competitors have the potential to surpass Netflix. Streaming services like
Amazon Prime and Hulu, also have a strong brand name and brand equity. Although, Netflix still leads the pack in terms of members, its competitors
still have a strong and growing customer base (Christian and Spooner, 2017). Currently, each streaming service offers and produces original content.
Amazon is nearly doubling its budget for content (Low, 2016). Also, the growth in technology and e–commerce translates into revenue growth for
Netflix's key competitors. Netflix's projected 2016 revenue was $8.8 billion compared to Amazon's $136.8 billion (Low, 2016). Thus, Netflix shares
many of its key core competencies with its competitors.
One core competency of issue is revenue growth. The continual investment in premium original–content is costly. Netflix is spending more to expand
its streaming services in nearly every country. However, the company's investment in more original shows is deteriorating its free cash flow. Netflix is
currently "on the hook for $14.4 billion in future payments for streaming video programming" (Bloomberg News, 2016). This is nearly double

Internal Rivalry
Looking strictly at the video rental industry, Netflix faces minimal internal rivalry because the industry is dominated by only a handful of firm in
Europe, namely Blockbuster. Although Netflix faces little internal rivalry in its immediate industry, the company faces an intensely competitive
broader market. Since home entertainment covers a broad spectrum of technologies and channels of distribution, Netflix is in direct competition with
firms in a number of other industries including cable networks, who air movies on television, satellite companies' VOD services, and websites like
Hulu, which provide video content through online streaming. Furthermore, as people transition from consumption of physical DVDs to ... Show more

To capitalize on these profitable complements to their streaming service, it is advantageous for Netflix to enter into joint ventures with companies that
produce electronics.
Supplier Power
Netflix acquires its video content through direct purchases, revenue sharing agreements, and licensing agreements. These agreements, which allow
Netflix to rent DVDs and stream video content, are primarily obtained from studios, networks, and distributors. Therefore, Netflix's suppliers, e.g.
studios, networks, and distributors, control the prices that Netflix must pay for its video content. The First Sale Doctrine, a copyright law stipulating
that once a copyright owner sells a copy of their work they relinquish control of the work and the purchaser may redistribute the work as they wish,
provides protection for Netflix with regards to redistributing DVD titles. However, the First Sale Doctrine does not apply to streaming content.
Therefore, Netflix is especially vulnerable to supplier power during streaming distribution cost negotiations. The studios and distributors who license
streaming content are in full control of the terms and conditions with Netflix and may rescind the availability of the content at will. As the DVD format
becomes increasingly obsolete and streaming video content grows in popularity, Netflix become more susceptible to the power of their suppliers.
Another aspect of the in–home video entertainment industry, which substantially

The Issue Of Copyrighted Music And Its Illegal Consumption...
Though it doesn 't receive as much attention in terms of media attention and public discourse as it earlier in the 2000s, the issue of copyrighted music
and its illegal consumption over the internet still continues to be a major issue. With the advent of the internet, digital music, and mp3 players, one of
the drawbacks for many of those in the music industry was the subsequent increase in pirated music that occurred. As illegal torrent sites appeared,
such as Napster and Limewire, people were discovering that they could now download for free what they once paid for. Of course, as a direct result,
music companies and artists both saw a significant decrease in sales in terms of the physical medium, with CD sales beginning to show sharp

financial means to withstand a restructuring process. Major chain stores were also not immune to the decline sales, as some once–prominent stores,
such as the Virgin Megastore and the Wall, had to close down. Once Apple Inc. released its iPod and created theiTunes Store, the music industry was
finally beginning to adapt itself to the digital realm, as Apple began signing agreements with most of the major music labels to release their songs on
a digital platform as well. With songs being available individually for just $0.99 cents and whole albums able to be purchased, people now had a legal

The Adoption And Viability Of A New Business Model
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The principle objective of this project is to discuss the adoption and viability of a new business model in which Internet
streaming media companies have started to develop their own content. By researching the industry trends, we will understand why and how companies
use 2–sided platforms to bring together and satisfy two different groups of users. Furthermore, with particular focus on Amazon and Netflix, we will
expand the scope of our competitive analysis by exploring other strategies that can be used to gain a competitive foothold across the different media
industries. By discuss the sustainability of the different strategies, we intend to argue this new business model will become dominant within the

INTRODUCTION Today, the online media streaming of Film, TV and Music is being rapidly driven by the increasing availability and prominence of
high–speed internet as well as an ever–increasing repertoire of interconnected electronic devices. The result is a real–time entertainment industry that
has experienced tremendous growth over the last decade and is thought to attributable for two thirds of data usage by 2018. Within 10 years the video
streaming is expected to almost triple in size beyond $10 billion, driven largely by a more "connected" living room (Kerr, 2013; Davidson, 2015)
These advancements are changing the landscape of how media is distributed as business models adapt to diversifying technology and changing
consumer behaviour. As a result, more traditional methods of distribution, outlined in figure 1, have been affected. In particular, this impact is of
high–profile concern in the music industry, where profits have been impaired as music becomes available on these services soon after its production
(Milne, 2014). With regards to TV shows and Films, streaming services are often the last in the release window for content distribution and can only
attract users that want to re–watch shows or those they have missed them during the previous windows. At the same time, a greater degree of autonomy
provides consumers

Mass Media And Its Effect On The Air Waves
Mass media distribution has been around since the invention of the printing press. (Gerbner, 1999) However, broadcast radio presented a higher level
of distribution speed to this process and allowed for an extended reach to consumers. Since its creation, this technology has been controlled by FCC
regulations and advertising support, limiting the freedom of the broadcasters so all of the possible listeners are happy. Between the government
maintenance and listening trends, the range of music and content on the air waves has been reduced to 5 basic genres. The introduction of the internet
has allowed this medium to once again evolve. The reach has been greatly extended, advertising made optional and freedom of use increased. This
being said, the largest attraction to internet radio is its ability to be customized by the listener. Historically, the concept of internet radio has been
around since the early 1990s. These broadcasts were still very limited because most of them were streams from terrestrial radio stations or niche
talk shows. Carl Malamud began this phenomena with a weekly computer talk show, interviewing experts and streaming it openly online. These
types of broadcasts became so popular that The Rolling Stone began playing a concert over the web as well. This idea would be copied over and over
again by every musician and music producer. As file sharing spread and download speeds increased, issues began to rise between music streamers and

The Music Industry Has Experienced A Difficult Period For...
Introduction: The music industry has experienced a difficult period for the past decade. since the initial decline of Napster both record labels and
artists have seen their revenues dwindling. As the music industry has progressed vinyls were swapped for CD's and more recently on demand
audio streaming. Since its introduction, digital audio streaming has been regarded as the demise of the audio industry by some artists and
promoters, however, it is also perceived as the future of the industry as it has shown promising growth over its relatively short existence. This is due
to various positive and negative factors that are entwined in the system, This factors being primarily overall revenue and profitability of the method,
as much as convenience for both consumers, promoters and artist. In order to understand such debate, one must first assess the actual definition of
music streaming, furthermore, identifying its effects towards the music industry and what could be regarded as its life blood: Artist income and
average revenue. By definition streaming is the ability to listen to a record in real time without requiring the user to download a certain file. Such is
possible by compressing data to sizes where it can be quickly accessed by the user allowing for parallel playback and buffering (rapidly loading more
content than what will be used at the time to allow continuous playback). Delivery methods for streams will vary, ranging from subscription based
paying streams to add

The Advancement And Development Delivery Of Media Content
The advancement and development in delivery of media content has also affected the audience's behavior in certain manner. In distant past, families
use to gather around the only television screen in home and enjoy the prime time programs aired by these limited broadcasters. "Millions of
households already have cancelled pay–TV subscriptions – up to 10 million U.S. households are currently broadband–only. And about 45 percent of
Americans stream television shows at least once a month, according to research firm eMarketer. That number is expected to increase to 53 percent or
175 million people by 2018." Anderson, Mae, and Michael Liedtke. "HBO Unleashes Streaming from Cable Contracts." The Charleston Gazette, 16
Oct. 2014. Web.
Occasionally, people use to go out and rent DVD's to watch a specific movie from rental stores. Advancement in technology has brought a sufficient
change in customer's behaviors, today DVD rental stores have almost gone. Moreover, by time we saw enormous increase in channels being provided
by cable providers, but today even that has been replaced by streaming media devices, thus my time, role of cable providers might also disappear due
to the introduction of devices such as Netflix, Apple TV etc. "DVD sales have also been hit. The Los Angeles–based Digital Entertainment Group
estimates DVD sales in 2008 fell 8% to $21.6 billion from a year earlier, while DVD rentals were flat." Charny, Ben. "Viewers Tap Free Web Content."

Music Industry Changes
How the internet has affected the music industry. Over the past half–decade, the music industry had changed drastically. If that's how people buy music
or how people listen to music, its changed. The music industry has been ripped apart thanks to the power of the internet. You might not think about it
when you're listening to music on repeat but after you have listened to a track you're potentially affecting the official charts without even realising it.
Downloading music illegally has increased massively ever since the "technology era" has taken over the world, it's not only robbing artist of their

In the recent year, illegal downloads have been dominating the music industry not only in the UK but worldwide. In 2015, numbers showed that a
massive 62% of people in the UK either illegally download or steam music online, this affect artist's income when it comes to illegally
downloading music as when they see how much money they have made it will be plummeting each month. Throughout the UK many people were
surveyed and results showed that, 26% of the people surveyed downloaded music illegally online. In the USA, The Recording Industry
Association of America (also known as RIAA) reported that music sales have dropped massive 42% ever since illegal download was invented.
This can affect the music industry in many ways some may be that if illegal downloads keep rising it will make sales lower and potentially make it
harder for artists getting worldwide recognition and will make it harder for new upcoming artist to get signed by record labels. Spotify, the world
largest streaming service, could be affected by people illegally downloading music as Spotify will end up losing money which will be used to pay artist

Benefits And Downfalls Of The United States
I. INTRODUCTION
Technology is an essential part of human development, but with technological advancements we can see our lives being changed every single day. In
Sao Paulo, technology is on the rise and is slowly catching up with the United States and other countries that are quickly developing. With a generation
of kids in the United States that have connection to anything at their fingertips, we can notice that our perspectives and modalities are always adapting.
America has developed wireless technologies that transfer data with broadband and wireless devices. Streaming services such as Pandora, Spotify,

The data transfer rate is very important because it regulates our devices and technologies we use. In general, the data transfer rate reflects changes and
improvements in digital technologies, where newer systems, such as solid–state electronics, have resulted in much higher data transfer rates within
only a few decades. Often, people mistake transfer rate with broadband, nevertheless, they are two different things working in slightly different ways.
Transfer rate looks at the amount of data that has actually been transferred between two different points, while bandwidth is a measurement of the
theoretical maximum transfer capacity of a certain point on a network. With all this data flowing freely, there has to be some sort of restriction on
how fast different applications are. This is where net neutrality comes into play. For example, online streaming effectively requires your computer to
download a new image once every fraction of a second. This takes up much more data than sending a simple email or using a simple application. The
result of this is that organizations and bigger users have to buy high performance networks to maximize rates. Companies such as T– Mobile have
released unlimited data plans with no cap on, and this has been causing waves throughout the industry. They have been attempting to gain market share
with companies like AT&T and Verizon. Now, they offer to pay out the contract fees of customers who switch over. T

Netflix And The Streaming Application
Introduction
A streaming application is a program that does not require to be pre–installed in the computer, rather it downloads the necessary components when
needed. Some of the applications are so large (sometimes over a gigabyte), that it is not possible to copy the entire application. When there is request
for streaming application, only some portion of the files are downloaded which is required to launch. Streaming has become important because not
everyone has the fast access to download large files quickly and due to streaming, the plug in can display the content even before the entire file has been
transmitted. Among numerous streaming applications, the video streaming is on rise.
Talking About NETFLIX

revolution in the field of digital content. It has a major market in the entertainment section ranging from movies and TV shows to gaming consoles.
Netflix has gained huge response and audience because it has the ability to stream media on almost all the electronic devices, be it laptop, PCs, mobile
or televisions, providing entertainment on the go with a very economic rent. Netflix uses Dynamic Streaming over HTTP protocol for streaming media.

Threats include having exclusively agreements with content providers may affect availability of movies for streaming, more competition from big

the movie and TV industry less willing to make exclusive deals with online video services, Motion Pictures Association of America posing a risk if
changes will be made affecting Netflix adversely, and etc.
After doing this research on Netflix, we have discovered that they have a central issue that should be addressed. Netflix is currently doing very well,
rated as one of the best TV shows and movies broadcasters, compared to their competitors. Though, their revenue and subscription growth is
continuing to grow, they are still struggling with some issues. The central issue Netflix is currently facing is outdated movies and TV shows as well
as inconsistency in their content provided every year, which leads to declining subscribers and a struggle to retain their current customers. Netflix is
known to be the world's largest Internet television provider but their TV shows and movies are outdated. An example of this concern is that, you can

The company has managed to do this by breaking free of its original 1990's DVD distribution service by mail to becoming a national video
streaming service in 2007. Since the switch, Netflix has left the cable industry lagging. Today, most households are looking to replace cable with
a streaming service. This is a result of Netflix changing the way people receive media. For years the cable industry stood strong running channels
generating revenue from both subscribers and advertiser broadcasting shows to mass audiences while Netflix continued to distribute DVD's.
Breaking into the video streaming industry has allowed Netflix to deliver programming "on demand" creating a "library of programs" via the
internet , allowing viewers to watch what they want when they want instead of just watching "what's on" like they would have to when using
cable. There are only a few firms with the economies of scale to compete with Netflix, which is why it is safe to say that the company operates
under a natural monopoly where a barrier of entry exists. Netflix is subscriber funded. People who subscribe to the service pay a monthly fee for
access to its content. In order to keep its revenue flowing Netflix has to constantly buy content its subscribers are willing to pay for. The company
plans to spend 8 billion on content in 2018 alone

uncertainty of content availability and media quality. Another example is change in economic situation. Subscription rate tend to increase in future.
Sudden increase in price lead to high transaction costs. Therefore, uncertainty is positively related with transaction cost. High level of uncertainty
increases transactional cost. Similarly, buying frequency reduces transaction costs and creates economies of transactions. Buying frequency is
exchange of goods and service. Increase in buying frequency reduces transactional cost. For instance, frequent purchasing provides incentives to
customers. Last factor is security, which is also negatively associated with transaction cost. Security includes transaction security and personal

The Wave Of Streaming Media
Tidal: The New Wave in Streaming Media
As technological advances continue, FM/AM radio becomes more and more obsolete. While it 's true the for the time being, terrestrial radio isn 't in
any clear danger of being replaced, the growing popularity of streaming sites may send radio along the way of the 8–track. One of the newest and most
popular streaming platforms is Tidal. Sporting unprecedented artist ownership and blockbuster exclusive material, Tidal surged into the fray in 2015
with genuine lossless quality; its 1.4Mbps is more CD quality than mp3.
When Jay–Z bought Tidal 's parent company Aspiro in 2015, the music industry was turned on its ear. Owned by artists such as the aforementioned
Jay–Z, Beyonce, Madonna and a plethora of others, Tidal offers high fidelity, lossless music quality and exclusive content for its subscribers. Being
owned by the artists themselves, Tidal claims to pay the highest percentage of royalties to musical artists and songwriters in the music streaming
market. Tidal also has distribution deals with many record labels, including the big three: Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and
Warner Music Group. The Tidal library consists of 30 million tracks, mirroring the library sizes of Apple and Spotify, although it is understood that
certain tracks can only be found on Tidal. To mark the new launch, many musical artists took to social media, changing their profile pictures blue and

In terms of challenges, Beats have been applauded for their great marketing strategy, but criticized actually for the quality of their product and the

The People 's Platform : Taking Back Power And Culture

conducted by news outlet Nielsen 's Music 360 claimed, "Americans streamed 164 billion on–demand tracks across audio and video platforms in
2014". The rapid increase in popularity music streaming platforms are experiencing leaves people wondering what that means for the music industry.
When more consumers utilize the on–demand method of entertainment access, how does that translate to the artist being accessed? Astra Taylor

Does Taylor accurately represent the plight of the modern artist who has been swallowed by the digital economy? Or does she miss the point of the
new wave of media access completely?
Although Taylor has provided powerful statistics and moving personal interviews to support her argument that the digital economy has hurt modern
day artists more than benefitted them, she neglects the benefits that these platforms do accumulate for the artists, drowning it out instead with
information that strategically distracts from the main objective of the platform. She also lacks a multidimensional perspective on the consumer whom
this inevitably does affect.
In her chapter For Love or Money, Taylor alludes to the on–demand media sharing industry advertising false promise. "Where they go wrong is in
thinking that the Internet is an egalitarian, let alone revolutionary, platform for our self–expression and development," Taylor explains. She is eager to
draw attention to how the new wave of media sharing fails to be a better solution than old methods however, who 's to say that was the intended
purpose of those who implemented these platforms to begin with? With music streaming being the easiest form of music access, the spectrum of artists
reaching listeners has increased drastically. Music is now reaching listeners it would have otherwise never encountered. It is also important to recognize
that artists did not gain a higher percentage of success

Persuasive Essay On Modern Technology
The utmost, overriding facet of our society has been placed in our hands, perched on a stand, and then plugged into a socket: modern technology.
Today, individuals without up to date technology are christened anomalies that are late to the 'smart era' of smartphones, smartwatches, and smart
televisions. In Is Google Making Us Stupid? by Nicholas Carr, and Be a Gamer, Save the World by Jane McGonigal, it is made comprehensible that,
as a society, we have begun to intertwine ourselves in the tangles of our electronics, which we cannot seem to relinquish. Our generation has been
advancing with technology nonstop to the point where a new gadget is practically released daily. Recently, the latest technological fixation that has
rapidly spread like wildfire is video streaming: whether it be video–on–demand or live, it has concurrently seized and fashioned jobs, as well as
intermixed communities and individuals alike. Ever since the emergence of humans, the demand for amusement was prevalent and constantly evolving.
From watching gladiators brawl in an arena, to attending operas and plays, to channel surfing, people have continually desired to be entertained. Today,
there is another alteration that is changing the way people absorb the content that they want. Streaming, the most productive way to receive internet
content, has skyrocketed in our society as the internet has become a "universal medium" (Carr 573). It started with Netflix, and then it was adapted by
other platforms. More and more people have gravitated towards their phones and computers as outlets for entertainment and news instead of their
televisions, causing traditional media to race to conform to the innovative technology (Carr 576–577) of streaming. For example, there are presidential
debates that have been live streamed, and are said to be the most popular stream in internet history. Streaming has become a trend that has yet to lose
momentum, and has consistently stayed at the top of the consumer food chain. When it comes to watching television shows and movies, streaming
websites, such as: Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon, have virtually monopolized the market, and have exceedingly brought down cable and theater sales. The
mere thought of cable is

Negative Effects Of Music Streaming

  • 1. Negative Effects Of Music Streaming The internet that we know and love today, was invented in the early 90's. While it did not gain much popularity during its early years, it is now a global network devised of millions of computers. The internet itself does many great things, but how has it changed our music? Does it sound different? And if it is in what ways does it sound different? Also, is it distributed differently? The internet changed music in many ways, but one important way is music streaming. Music streaming means listening to music in "real time", instead of downloading a file to your computer or device and listening to it later. Many artists believe that music streaming services such as Spotify or Pandora don't reward them enough for the right to play their music. Artists want people to purchase songs and albums through traditional ways, this includes stores or iTunes or anywhere else (Alexander 2015). "At the recent star–studded Grammy Awards, a number of artists including Jennifer Hudson and Maroon 5's Adam Levine publicly committed to joining forces in order to hold back the oncoming tidal wave of streaming, which threatens to change the entire industry model and make it more difficult for artists to monetize their content off traditional platforms – especially their greatest commodity: their music." (Alexander 2015). This quote concludes that many artists don't like the idea of music streaming. However, music streaming may have some positive effects too. Music streaming allows for unknown ... • 2. Live Streaming Video Game Footage Live streaming video game footage is becoming an increasingly bigger phenomenon in the gaming world. Already some forty–five million gamers go on Twitch every month to stream, watch, and chat about games. And that's just one streaming platform, there are others platforms, like YouTube gaming, just to name one. But streaming is traditionally something that was done from a PC and pc games like DOTA, Counterstrike, and StarCraft dominate the streaming scene. But with the newest generation of consoles, streaming from consoles became a reality. Microsoft's Xbox allows gamers to download a free Twitch app and begin streaming just by using voice activation. Sony's PlayStation allows gamers to link their console with their Twitch account and begin... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It only has dimensions of 0.4 by 0.6 inches which it makes slightly more compact than the average streaming mic; but that is understandable given that this mic is intended for consoles first and foremost. It feels light in your hand, and can easily be moved around. Furthermore, because it is a USB mic, it is very easy to maneuver the mic, or just completely change your entire setup. In terms of look the Turtle Beach does not have very many options at the moment; there are only two color options, black or silver. It is not revolutionary by any means, and it looks fairly standard in terms of design, size, and appearance. But overall, it is a decent, compact streaming mic. Universal compatibility While many of Turtle Beach's headsets have worked with both Sony consoles and Microsoft consoles, Turtle Beach has gun to lean towards Sony in terms of console headsets; just two years ago Turtle Beach agreed to manufacture Sony's official PS4 headsets. But console gamers will be happy to know that the digital streaming mic works on any console. The mic boasts universal plug and play compatibility with PlayStation, ... • 3. Streaming And The Future Of The Music Industry Streaming & The Future of The Music Industry The dawn of the internet brought forth a revolution that, by now, has seeped its way in the the very fibers of almost every human experience. Education has changed. Communication has changed. Entertainment has changed. Business has changed. Entire industries have been built, and destroyed, by the information age. The music industry, in particular, has felt both. With precursors of the Compact Disc (CD) and digital music formats, Shawn Fanning single handedly eviscerated the music industry. Napster, his peer to peer mass file sharing service, is what landed the fatal blow, and the industry has been bleeding out since. Many have tried to sew this wound shut. Most prominently Apple, with their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Streaming has obvious limitations though. Access to the network that sends the information is required. This is usually achieved by a connection to the internet. The strength of the connection drastically affects the quality of the stream. This entire process can be understood through viewing a video on YouTube, arguably the most popular video streaming service of all time. YouTube hosts a video that is saved to its server through its website. To view it, you must connect to the YouTube website through the internet. There you can view the video without having to download and store it on your device. This idea is similar to that of radio and television broadcasting where streaming uses the internet as its medium for travel instead of radio or electromagnetic waves. Most would associate the beginnings of media streaming with the back half of the 2000s, which is when it first amassed global popularity. Surprisingly, the idea to stream media through the internet had been floating around computer and entertainment industries since the 1990s. Even the current model for subscription based music streaming services had been presented previously. MusicNet was the brainchild of RealNetworks and the major record labels. It was their ... Research Report : The Syncopate Team Results on paper prototype survey The Syncopate team has conducted a survey on professor Bob Lyons ' students in his Introduction to Music Industry class through survey monkey, which we believe demonstrates the potential and necessity of a app which provides music recommendation from family and friends instead of algorithms, and have more features than a ordinary music messaging app. Using survey monkey, we have gathered responses from undergrad music industry students, which are aware of current music recommendation and discovery applications provided on the market, and have experience in recommending and been recommended music from different resources. We found out that while 80% of the subjects have received over three new musical works (artists, songs, albums) through recommendations from streaming services in the past two weeks, only 43% of the subjects received over three recommendations from their friends and families. However, data shows that users are 5.72% more likely to listen to the music recommended from friends and family than from streaming services again. Both channels showed a high level of confidence that users will receive a recommendation that they will enjoy, as 61.54 of the subjects said that they have a confidence level more than neutral that they will enjoy a song recommended by friends and family, which is 3% higher than recommendations from streaming services. One important discovery on the confidence level that is rather remarkable is that of all of the users, not a single one has chosen "least confident" when we asked than how confident a user will enjoy a recommendation from friends and family, showing that everyone has a fundamental amount of faith in proposals given by friends and family. We found out that when a user discovers a new music piece, 98% of the subjects intend to seek out more music by the artist discovered, while 87% recommend it to someone else, and ... • 5. Netflix As A Provider Of A Subscription Service For Streaming Through innovation, the media streaming provider, Netflix, has achieved competitive advantage in the global market. Netflix operates as a provider of a subscription service for streaming movies and television episodes over the Internet. Originally founded in California in 1997 as a mail order DVD rental service with a flat monthly subscription rate, allowing consumers to benefit from an unlimited number of rentals and no late fees, Netflix has grown to dominate their market and experience minimal direct competition by seizing the "first to market" competitive advantage. Now known as the primary provider of Internet only streaming media, Netflix has grown to have a market capitalisation of US$41.1 billion (as of May 2016) from their previous US$3 billion (in January 2013). Netflix succeeded in basic terms by keeping it simple. From the beginning of the DVD rental service to the creation of an online streaming website it has been able to keep the processes easy and corner its market. Reed Hastings, the C.E.O and co–founder of Netflix took advantage of two emerging technologies, DVDs and websites. His idea was simple, why not combine the two and deliver DVDs to the homes of consumers and provide them with a simple website from which they can order films. Hastings marketed his service at the two things he believed every individual wanted to save on, time and money. However, after a few years of enjoying the success from the DVD rental service Hastings felt confident that films ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Foxtel Rebranding Essay Foxtel Considers Rebranding but Not Likely to Happen Soon Foxtel has been the go–to pay TV service for many Australians since time immemorial, but its recent merger with News Corp's Fox Sports brings the possibility of rebranding closer to actuality. The unification of the two companies was announced in August of last year and was finally completed weeks ago, two months earlier than anticipated. News Corp now holds 65 percent of the new Foxtel while Telstra holds 35 percent. The amalgamation of Foxtel and Fox Sports, two of the biggest players in the country's media industry, instigates the question everyone has in mind – will Foxtel's name be transformed alongside its overall business structure as a result of News Corp gaining major control? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is reported to be a long–term consideration but only after the newly merged business completes its overhaul. News Corp Australasia chairman Michael Miller explained that their initial focus will be to maximise the collaboration of the two businesses along with their broadcast brands. Adding the issue of rebranding into the mix will only serve as a distraction and is not in line with their current primary objective. Sources also revealed that changing the Foxtel brand may have been considered for some time, but some executives, including new chief executive Patrick Delany believed it was somehow pointless to introduce rebranding if there aren't new product offerings to attract consumers. The rationale would be that rebranding serves no purpose without new services to justify the said name modification. Nevertheless, the supposed–to–be grounds behind the planned rebranding would be to give the company a literally fresh start in the form of a new name in order to eliminate the deep–rooted consumer perception about Foxtel being old and costly. This is why Foxtel's subscription costs have seen substantial decreases in the past four years while still incorporating the newest technology as part of its service ... • 9. Television And The Digital Age For the past century, modern technologies have made the distribution of news and entertainment more efficient. In the digital age, the media is an imperative element of everyday culture (Silverstone, 2004). There is no denying the indispensability of television as the central hub as represented in the quotation: "In my heart I will take my television set with me. I love you." – Suicide note of New York school boy after his father banned him from watching television (Sunday Times as cited in Silverstone, 2004). Although the television was once an essential part of the social sphere, advancements in the internet has developed flexible Streaming Videos On–Demand services such as Netflix and Stan which displace some of the demand for cable and free television. The different temporalities of both mediums changes the way consumers use these services and thus transforms its relationship to public life. HISTORY OF TELEVISION Television has been an crucial part of the household since the 20th century, as a medium for traditional households to come together and enjoy a program. The significance of television is encapsulated through the central placement of the television set in the common household. Traditionally, television was the main source of news and regarded as the "social centre". Everyone had to keep up to date to engage in "water cooler" conversations in order to be "connected". • 10. Demand Music Streaming And The Modern Music Industry On–Demand Music Streaming and the Modern Music Industry In October 2014, Taylor Swift released her latest studio album 1989, and by year's end it had become 2014's best–selling album with over 3.6 million copies purchased. Many fans had also anticipated listening to her newest work through the popular on–demand music streaming service Spotify. Instead, a week after the album's premiere, Taylor Swift pulled her entire discography from the site (Mansfield). Her actions have since sparked a debate over the impact of on–demand music streaming in today's music industry. Currently, on–demand music services are most beneficial to customers, major music labels, and well–known artists. What exactly is media streaming? In the past, digital media required devices to have large amounts of local, internal storage to hold content libraries for playback. Instead, streaming allows for media consumption via temporary downloads from online servers which are deleted once playback is complete. Music streaming is not new, as internet radio services like Pandora have been around for over a decade ("About Pandora"). Such services allow for the creation of custom stations through user feedback about musical tastes. While this allows for greater personalization than traditional radio stations, the drawbacks include the inability to select specific songs, repeat previously played tracks, create playlists, or listen to entire albums. On–demand services, on the other hand, allow for all of this in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Streaming Media and Netflix Netflix is an American company that provides video rental and on demand video streaming by way of either the mail or streaming through the internet. The company was founded in 1997 in Silicon Valley California by Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings. The idea for this DVD rental service came about when Reed Hastings was charged with a late fee when renting a movie and he questioned why he should have a time restriction on how long he is able to rent the movie. In April of 1998, the Netflix website was launched and they developed the concept of unlimited rentals with no shipping fees or late fees. In September of 2002, an article in The New York Times article stated that Netflix had around almost 670,000 subscribers. At the end of 2002, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead, three weeks later, an announcement was made that Netflix had changed their mind. They decided to go back on what they said and decided they were going to keep all their services under the one same name that everyone was already familiar with after all. Steve Swasey, a representative for the company was quoted saying, "We underestimated the appeal of the single Web site and a single service." This ended the creation of the idea of Qwikster but because of the confusing almost–name change that was soon reversed and the raised prices they lost close to 800,000 fewer subscribers. This number of lost customers came to a shock to almost everyone. This was the first significant decline the company experienced and is a clear example of a company making a decision without considering the public 's interest and opinions causing a significant have an impact on their profits. Netflix is just one example of the impact of technology on American family life. Subscribers to Netflix can now video stream movies to their computers and television with one click. This shifts consumers from looking outside the home for entertainment to becoming more insular in their hobbies. • 12. Netflix Case Study: SWOT Analysis of Netflix By: Ashley Avallone Executive Summary Netflix started as an online based movie rental service in 1999 when it was created by founder Reed Hastings, the current CEO of the company. Hastings' goal for the company was to be "the world's best Internet movie service provider and to deliver a growing subscriber base and earnings per share every year" (Thompson, C–92). The company has been able to become a leader in the movie rental and streaming industry for several reasons. Netflix was an early entrant to the industry and has been able to build an extensive subscriber base due to aggressive promoting and advertising of the brand, exclusive contracts with movie suppliers, and their superior... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Streaming videos is cheaper than distributing actual DVD's because companies do not have to maintain a strong distribution center and vast inventory; both of which take up time and money among other resources. Another advantage of streaming videos is that consumers have continuous access to movies and no longer have to leave their home. This high demand for movies has spurred intense competition among firms looking to profit off of streaming music digitally. Netflix was one of the original companies that realized the trend towards streaming and have lead the competition since. Today the top five best companies that provide media streaming services are Netflix, Amazon's Video on Demand, Hulu Plus, Vudu, and Itunes (Warren). While the subscriptions for these services have increased in recent years, there are some areas of concern for these firms. The economy and market environment in technology is always changing; innovative new products replace old ideas on a daily basis. Netflix has several advantages and disadvantages that, depending on how the company reacts, will dictate their overall success. • 13. How Your Local Restaurant Doesn 't Charge Your local restaurant doesn 't charge you a fixed price and tell you to gorge yourself on whatever comes out of the kitchen. Most restaurants operate on an Г la carte basis, allowing diners to choose foods they like from the menu and eat only what they want (and can afford). If you don't like broccoli or raspberries, you don 't pay for them; if you're a vegetarian you don 't subsidize the meal of the carnivore at the next table. Cable companies don't operate like that. Comcast and AT&T package all that "food" and shove it down their customers' throats like the Widette family descending on a smorgasbord. Streaming is a form of online video in which the site sends video footage to a user's machine "on the fly" rather than as a complete file. It's akin to the difference between watching a TV show as it airs and watching a DVD. Live streaming media is different than on–demand streaming. With the latter, the content has previously been recorded. The user then accesses it at a time of their choice, though it is still streamed to their machine rather than downloaded as a complete file. The recording may be streamed as it is going on, or it may be webcasted later, but still in live fashion. There are two main sectors that perform webcasting: entertainment and commercial. On the entertainment side, musicians and other types of entertainers such as comedians and actors may perform on a live webcast. One difference is the intent. Webcasting is broadcast to other computers so the other members can watch, and participation is not always part of the broadcast. Webconferencing is not for watching, but so each member can speak and participate in a conference over the Internet. Currently, each streaming service offers and produces original content. Amazon is nearly doubling its budget for content (Low, 2016). Also, the growth in technology and e–commerce translates into revenue growth for Netflix's key competitors. Netflix's projected 2016 revenue was $8.8 billion compared to Amazon's $136.8 billion (Low, 2016). Thus, Netflix shares many of its key core competencies with its competitors. One core competency of issue is revenue growth. The continual investment in premium original–content is costly. Netflix is spending more to expand its streaming services in nearly every country. However, the company's investment in more original shows is deteriorating its free cash flow. To capitalize on these profitable complements to their streaming service, it is advantageous for Netflix to enter into joint ventures with companies that produce electronics. Supplier Power Netflix acquires its video content through direct purchases, revenue sharing agreements, and licensing agreements. These agreements, which allow Netflix to rent DVDs and stream video content, are primarily obtained from studios, networks, and distributors. Therefore, Netflix's suppliers, e.g. studios, networks, and distributors, control the prices that Netflix must pay for its video content. The First Sale Doctrine, a copyright law stipulating that once a copyright owner sells a copy of their work they relinquish control of the work and the purchaser may redistribute the work as they wish, provides protection for Netflix with regards to redistributing DVD titles. However, the First Sale Doctrine does not apply to streaming content. Therefore, Netflix is especially vulnerable to supplier power during streaming distribution cost negotiations. The studios and distributors who license streaming content are in full control of the terms and conditions with Netflix and may rescind the availability of the content at will. Though it doesn 't receive as much attention in terms of media attention and public discourse as it earlier in the 2000s, the issue of copyrighted music and its illegal consumption over the internet still continues to be a major issue. With the advent of the internet, digital music, and mp3 players, one of the drawbacks for many of those in the music industry was the subsequent increase in pirated music that occurred. As illegal torrent sites appeared, such as Napster and Limewire, people were discovering that they could now download for free what they once paid for. Of course, as a direct result, music companies and artists both saw a significant decrease in sales in terms of the physical medium, with CD sales beginning to show sharp declines. In fact, this had a carryover effects of also closing down many of the mom and pop record stores that existed, since they did not have the financial means to withstand a restructuring process. Major chain stores were also not immune to the decline sales, as some once–prominent stores, such as the Virgin Megastore and the Wall, had to close down. Once Apple Inc. released its iPod and created theiTunes Store, the music industry was finally beginning to adapt itself to the digital realm, as Apple began signing agreements with most of the major music labels to release their songs on a digital platform as well. The result is a real–time entertainment industry that has experienced tremendous growth over the last decade and is thought to attributable for two thirds of data usage by 2018. Within 10 years the video streaming is expected to almost triple in size beyond $10 billion, driven largely by a more "connected" living room (Kerr, 2013; Davidson, 2015) These advancements are changing the landscape of how media is distributed as business models adapt to diversifying technology and changing consumer behaviour. As a result, more traditional methods of distribution, outlined in figure 1, have been affected. In particular, this impact is of high–profile concern in the music industry, where profits have been impaired as music becomes available on these services soon after its production (Milne, 2014). (Gerbner, 1999) However, broadcast radio presented a higher level of distribution speed to this process and allowed for an extended reach to consumers. Since its creation, this technology has been controlled by FCC regulations and advertising support, limiting the freedom of the broadcasters so all of the possible listeners are happy. Between the government maintenance and listening trends, the range of music and content on the air waves has been reduced to 5 basic genres. The introduction of the internet has allowed this medium to once again evolve. The reach has been greatly extended, advertising made optional and freedom of use increased. This being said, the largest attraction to internet radio is its ability to be customized by the listener. Historically, the concept of internet radio has been around since the early 1990s. These broadcasts were still very limited because most of them were streams from terrestrial radio stations or niche talk shows. Carl Malamud began this phenomena with a weekly computer talk show, interviewing experts and streaming it openly online. These types of broadcasts became so popular that The Rolling Stone began playing a concert over the web as well. This idea would be copied over and over again by every musician and music producer. Introduction: The music industry has experienced a difficult period for the past decade. since the initial decline of Napster both record labels and artists have seen their revenues dwindling. As the music industry has progressed vinyls were swapped for CD's and more recently on demand audio streaming. Since its introduction, digital audio streaming has been regarded as the demise of the audio industry by some artists and promoters, however, it is also perceived as the future of the industry as it has shown promising growth over its relatively short existence. This is due to various positive and negative factors that are entwined in the system, This factors being primarily overall revenue and profitability of the method, as much as convenience for both consumers, promoters and artist. In order to understand such debate, one must first assess the actual definition of music streaming, furthermore, identifying its effects towards the music industry and what could be regarded as its life blood: Artist income and average revenue. By definition streaming is the ability to listen to a record in real time without requiring the user to download a certain file. In general, the data transfer rate reflects changes and improvements in digital technologies, where newer systems, such as solid–state electronics, have resulted in much higher data transfer rates within only a few decades. Often, people mistake transfer rate with broadband, nevertheless, they are two different things working in slightly different ways. Transfer rate looks at the amount of data that has actually been transferred between two different points, while bandwidth is a measurement of the theoretical maximum transfer capacity of a certain point on a network. With all this data flowing freely, there has to be some sort of restriction on how fast different applications are. This is where net neutrality comes into play. For example, online streaming effectively requires your computer to download a new image once every fraction of a second.
