Working With The Elderly Population
Reminiscing to 2010, when I was faced with my grandmother 's illness during the adolescent years
in my life I knew that I had a passion to care for the elderly (aging) population. From this passion, it
ignited a fire so strong that I pursue my certified nursing assistant certification to gain a better
understanding of working with the elderly population. By doing so, it has been a great benefit to my
life; aging is an inevitable experience that we all will go through during our life. It is important to
ensure that our elderly individuals are still able to enjoy the best quality of life after retirement.
However, as we age, there will be a lifestyle change that the aging population must encounter.
Instead of relying on income from previous occupation, the elderly population, income will fixate,
resulting in dependency on their 401k saving plan and other government related programs to assist
with activities of daily living. This is why I choose to work with this population, to ensure that
dignity, worth, and respect of a person is maintained. However, the aging population should not feel
that they are being treated as a burden by the government or their families. In the United States, we
undermine our aging population by treating them as though they are not of any value. In reference to
this mistreatment towards the aging population can cause issues such as unemployment, health, and
elder abuse. Social justice is about assuring the protection of equal rights, and

My Career Path
Life works in mysterious ways, and my path has led me to pursue a career in the Social Work field.
My last two years of high school were unique because I was a full time dual enrolled student, which
allowed me to graduate with both my high school diploma and my Associate of Arts degree. Now I
am twenty years old and will be graduating with my Bachelor's in Psychology. Upon entering my
undergraduate program, I had some idea of what career path I wanted to follow. I had taken many
entry–level psychology courses while pursuing my Associate of Arts degree and it peaked my
interest. At first, I wanted to be a guidance counselor and then I contemplated being a mental health
counselor. It was not until I took a course the first year of my undergraduate career that I knew my
future career path. The course I took was Issues in Culture and Society with a concentration in
Death and Dying. In that class, I learned how beautiful death can be and how important it is for
someone to have a good death. The class also gave me information on grieving for all ages and how
to help individuals experiencing grief and this is when I decided to become a bereavement
counselor. My mother died when I was seven and I had to grieve in silence, so I want to help others
with their grief, so they do not have a similar experience to mine.
In order to accomplish my aspiration as a bereavement counselor, I knew I needed to gain
experience in the area of bereavement. I began an internship in an organization

Identify and critically review the study and discuss the following in the context of anti–oppression
and social justice mission of the school In the research study, "Evaluating the Phobias, Attitudes,
and Cultural Competence of Master of Social Work Students Toward the LGBT Populations," Logie

resources in being able to serve clients and cater to their specific needs between a social worker and
client. According to Ryerson University's Social Work Mission/Vision Statements, "To prepare
graduates for critically engaged social work practice with marginalized populations and

undergraduate and graduate level, through teaching, scholarship, research and community service"

My Master Degree In Social Work
1) One thing that makes me happy is going to church to play the piano. Spending time with my
family makes me happy. Also what makes me happy is going to the mall and buying shoes.
Watching YouTube videos on fashion and beauty makes my day. On my free time I like to read
books that are mystery and romance. The life I see myself is having my master degree in social
worker. I also want to be married and have two kids. I see myself being happy knowing that I have
my dream job. The life I see myself is being able to grow old with my husband. The life I see myself
in spiritual way is becoming a better daughter and maybe preacher to young teenagers about how
they should love themselves. Hopefully I see myself traveling the world one day. The main ... Show

What Does It Mean For The Social Work Field?
What does it mean to be in the social work field? This is an important question to ask someone who
is deciding to join the social work profession. Personally, I believe that my career goals align with
the mission of the social work profession, along with the Graduate College of Social Work (GCSW)
school mission. An individual who commits themselves to the social work profession joins this field
in order to improve and enlighten individuals (NASW, 2017). A professional in social work desires
to support others through their work. Social workers may help individuals by supplying the skills
and resources for their clients to survive on a daily basis (NASW, 2017). As a social worker, I would

Recently in June 2016, I volunteered at the Methodist Children's Home of Costa Rica. I spent 10
days socializing with young children and adolescents. Playing games with the children, and singing
songs in their native language was just some of the activities I participated in. My time in Costa
Rica was also spent at two other sites where we interacted with different children. While in Costa
Rica I also helped construct a 10–foot–tall concrete wall and multi–recreational facility at the
Methodist Children's Home of Costa Rica. Wow! What a task that was. Physically building and
working to construct protection for the children was a huge demanding task. Looking back now it
was worth the effort I put into the project. Just like building the wall, graduate school will be a huge
task for me to complete. However, I know that I can finish graduate school and will drive myself to
do the best that I can in my studies. It was an honor to provide my assistance in a new country and
gain valuable information about a new culture. It was interesting to see how these children whom
had been neglected most of their life could open up their hearts for a few short days to total
strangers. Being able to help others with the skills I have learned just from undergraduate school at
University of Houston was a great advantage to me while volunteering in Costa Rica. I would

Master Degree In Social Work
Working toward a Master degree in Social Work often includes translating academic learning and
theories into practice. Hence, there is a marriage between classroom content and field placement
which offers a platform to learn and practice skills simultaneously. Also, this experience can help to
build confidence while linking the importance of classroom discussion to practice.
As a result of class discussions and reading assignments I am more cognizant when conducting bio–
psychosocial that the client cannot be considered in isolation from his or her physical and social
environment. I assess these areas more keenly with the intent that this information will shed light on
how the community supports or hinders the client's survival and development. Also, this knowledge
provides me with information about barriers that might hinder the intervention plan. Although my
agency doesn't focus on the family, I assess this area as well to determine family dynamics in
relation to supporting the intervention plan. Family members and other persons involved in the
clients' lives often provide emotional support and resources which can assist the client in reaching
their goals.
Another concept I use to inform my work with clients is self–determination which is a critical social
work value. Nevertheless, I am aware that clients often make life ... Show more content on

Ever since I was a child, I have been drawn to help others less fortunate than myself. Through my
years of volunteer and educational experiences, I have discovered a passion for helping children and
families. These experiences cemented my resolve to help children thrive in a safe, caring, and
nurturing environment. They are the most vulnerable population of people whose rights are often
infringed upon due to their inability to speak up for themselves. Becoming a social worker will put
me in a position to speak up and advocate for these at–risk children and ensure that they have the
resources and help they deserve. This degree will allow me to continue my pursuit of social justice

I worked as a teacher's assistant for Intro to Psychology and Developmental Psychology, a Research
Assistant for Neuropsychology, and a Peer Learning Assistant for Spanish. These three jobs taught
me the valuable skill of organization because I had to schedule students to run their experiments,
tutor students, and hold exam reviews. This skill will be very beneficial to me due to the fact that
social workers have very busy schedules and are actively working on several caseloads at once. In
addition, they must make time to travel to houses for home visitations, hospitals, schools, prisons,
and courts. I will utilize my time management skills by delivering treatment plans in a timely
fashion, especially if the cases require immediate attention.
Lastly, my genuine love of learning and curiosity about the world will be a great strength in

Indian nationalist leader Mahatma Gandhi once stated, "The best way to find yourself is to lose
yourself in the service of others". This simple yet powerful quote motivates me to remain steadfast
in the mission of aiding others. I'm pursing a Masters in social work because by working in this
field, I can educate, advocate, motivate, understand, and encourage resilience to clients from every
walk of life. It is a profession that will allow me to practice both on a micro and macro level
simultaneously. Lastly, working in social work gives me the capacity to challenge policies affecting
disadvantaged communities.
My interest in this field stems from growing up in a small, rural, poverty stricken town. This gave
me a unique perspective on the world. My hometown had many children with potential, but because
they did not have a positive outlet most of our future workforce leaders did not complete school. As
a professional, I want to create an outreach program designed for high school students, from low–
income communities, that pushes and encourages them to stay in school and seek higher education.
Currently there are no programs in the area that offers educational assistance to these children.
Considering the lack of resources available, the need for such a program is evident. My solution is
to use social work to develop these types of services and create policies that can affect at risk youth

Social Work Career As A Social Worker
Social Work Career
If you are an individual who seeks to promote human well–being and have an intense desire to help
others, you might consider pursuing a career in social work. "Social work is a practice–based
profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social
cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people" (International Federation of Social
Workers, 2014, para. 2). Social workers identify those who need help, examine their situations and
develop plans to resolve their issues. They help individuals cope with issues such as substance
abuse, finance, and personal relationships. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, advocacy is
an important aspect of social work. Social workers advocate or raise awareness with and on behalf
of their clients and the social work profession on local, state, and national levels (Bureau of Labor
Statistics, 2015, para. 6). There are many different practices and approaches considered by the
practitioner to determine an applicable approach towards intervention. Another variation of a social
worker, (known as a clinical social worker) may also diagnose and treat people with mental,
behavioral, and emotional issues. There are numerous career paths in social work, providing a broad
range of opportunities and environments. Although all social workers espouse the common goal of
helping others, professionals have the opportunity to specialize their services and focus on certain

My role as a human relations agent at the Inuulitsivik Health Center in Nunavik, is the second
reason why I believe Victoria's MSW program will be a good fit for me. I discovered from the Inuit
population in Nunavik that the system has oppressed them for so many years but little is being to
address their needs and aspirations.
My current role as a child welfare practitioner is third reason why I am applying for the Victoria's
MSW program. I believe the school's educational mission will further help me in working with
individuals and families from a critical point perspective by focusing on the structural, feminist, and
Indigenous levels of oppression. I am aware of my power as a child welfare worker and how I
sometimes create a dominate relationship to a family with child protection concerns. Thus, I believe
that the university's MSW educational mission combined with their scholarly mission to sharing and
creating knowledge from a critical view could help me to improve and integrate more anti–
oppressive practices as a parent child capacity building practitioner.
Over my period of volunteer experience and professional work, I have taken special interests in
children and families because conflicts in the home have steadily increased over the years. My area
of interest I will critically explore therefore during my graduate education is, "Aboriginal Parents
and Child Protection Concerns".

Social, Sociology, And Sociology
Social work is centred on people, of all ages, races and class backgrounds to try to make their lives
better. Social workers collaborate with individuals and families to improve outcomes and quality of
life. It is an intense and responsible job and an employee's actions will have consequences, whether
they are good or bad.
Social workers ensure the welfare of vulnerable groups or individuals who need that extra support.
Social work as a subject area includes elements of psychology, law and sociology.
Social policy is the study of various areas of policy, within political or governmental setting, and is
concerned with everything from the welfare state, to social services. Social policy is an academic
study of theory, rather than current policies and draws from psychology, sociology, philosophy, and
economics.
What A Levels do I need?
Each university will ask for varying grades and tariff points from their prospective candidates,
therefore students are advised to check with their chosen institutions and degree programmes to
ensure they understand what they need to obtain to gain admission.
What are my study options?
Social work degree programmes mix vocational training with academic learning, and the majority of
courses will be three years in length. Some universities ask students to complete placement days,
where they have to complete a certain number as part as their assessment. Most individuals will be

Becoming A Master 's Degree For Social Work
I, Carlos Delgado, truly believe that my past and current work experience has served as preparation
to pursue my master's degree in social work. I am very aware that it takes plenty of hard work and
dedication to be successful in a graduate program, yet I believe that my experiences along with my
current work experience will assist me in gaining that success in a master's program. Five weeks
before graduating from California State University Los Angeles (CSULA) with my bachelors in
social work, I was offered a position as a housing caseworker with an agency called Homeless
Health Care Los Angeles (HHCLA). I felt anxious and excitement because I was going to be dealing
with the real thing now, and for the first time I was going to have the title that I always wanted to
have, the title of a social worker. Working at HHCLA has allowed me to expand and improve my
case managing skills and has also given me the opportunity to work on my clinical skills. Being a
social worker at HHCLA and being an intern with the psychiatric social worker and the school of
mental health at Huntington Park High School have taught me to be resourceful, because being
resourceful helps me to better assist my clients needs.
From 2008 to 2014 I was employed in an elementary school where I had to opportunity to work with
the school's social worker in assisting both general and special education students and their families.

The Masters Of Social Work Program
Going into the Masters of Social Work program, I thought I had an idea of what I was going to do

Reflecting back from when I first started this program, I have changed a lot in many aspects of
myself. My professional self is has changed the most. Working with various different clients,
backgrounds, situations, mental and physical health issues, socioeconomic status, sexual
orientations, ages, and races have gave me great experiences that will carry on in my social work
skill set. Doing my internship, and now current job, in child protective services and my current
internship at Davis Child Shelter, were some of the best experiences a person can ask for wanting to
be a professional social worker. During my time in the master's program, there was been a couple of
experiences in particular that has carried along with me. While in child protective services,
witnessing New Port, an area in Danville, WV that is very poverty stickered, and seeing how people
lived in extreme poverty, substance abuse, high crime rates, and overall general violence that would
occur there. Infrastructure was horrible, the trailer homes the people living in were old, run down,
and dirty, and the roads, if that is what one would call that, were broken, asphalt split in half,
potholes large as cars, and many parts of the area were dirty roads. If one did not know the area,

Mental Health Is Becoming Serious
The rapid escalation of youth and adults affected by mental health is becoming serious not just in
Indiana but all over the United States. In the last several years national tragedies and mass killings
such as Sandy Hook has placed our government in the position of reexamining and improving
access to mental health treatment. Although the government sees a great need for changing it 's
unhurried I have witnessed mental health patients unable to get medication and have limited access
to mental health care due to lack of insurance or other barriers. Mental health comes in many
different faces some are being treated others are undiagnosed. The current economic crisis and
environmental violence has created a fracture within our community as we witness to an increase in
murders among youth we need to implement a change for our community in both mental and social
services there is a great need for committed individuals that are not in it for the money but who are
in this field because they care. This problem resonates deeply with me, I want to continue to grow in
this field that I 've been working in since I was twenty–one years old to assist with being part of the
solution to our growing crisis. It is for this reason that I am applying to the graduate program in
social work at IUPUI. I seek the skills and knowledge needed to get me to the next level of helping
our community heal.

The Values Of Social Work
My aspiration is to pursue social work as a career has progressed over my lifetime. It is the core
values of social work that inspire me to want to be a social worker. It is my desire to enable all
people of all ages gain, equality and empowerment for a better life. I believe that viewing an
individual in their environment and as a whole human being is what can make a difference in the
lives of people. It is my desire to help others, to be the person who can help make a difference in the
lives of those in need. In service, I want to give back to our communities, in particular families with
children. I have the desire and have retained the passion to work and advocate for families and
children. My qualities of empathy and compassion will allow me to work with families. I believe in,
treating every member with dignity, while recognizing the worth of each individual. I understand
that families can be complex and keeping families together is very important for healthy child
development. Pursuing my Master of Social Work (MSW)'s degree is a large step on my continuing
journey to deliver social work ethics with integrity. Having the Master's in Social Work will greatly

A Career in Social Work
A Career in Social Work
I chose to do research on a career as a social worker because, based on my Holland and MBTI code,
this career best combines the conventional, social, and realistic aspects of my personality. I also feel
that this career choice corresponds with my personal values, as it will allow me to channel my
communication and problem–solving skills towards helping disadvantaged individuals and families.
Entering the social work field requires considerable preparation. In California, as in most states, a
bachelor's degree in social work (BSW), as well as the completion of additional coursework hours in
areas such as child–abuse assessment and alcohol/chemical dependency, is the minimum
requirement to become a Licensed Bachelor's Social Worker (LBSW). An LBSW must work under
the supervision of a Licensed Master Social Worker or a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, licenses
which both require a master's degree in social work (MSW). Most California State University
campuses in the southern California area offer accredited degrees in social work. In particular, the
University of Southern California offers a top–ranked online MSW program. Full–time social
workers must also be prepared to work 40 hours per week, occasionally working evenings and
weekends to meet deadlines, meet with clients, or handle emergencies. In addition to fulfilling all
these preparation requirements, successful social workers must be deeply compassionate, a good
listener, and an effective

Social Work Reflection
This class/semester is halfway through, and I started to make plans to continue my education at
Aurora University. I applied for the Advanced Master program of Social Work at Aurora University;
I was accepted first by a notification of an email from the school. Then I attended the Master
Program for Social Work orientation. I registered as a new student and received my paperwork
making myself eligible to register for my classes that will be starting in January 2018. I can't express
the feeling of accomplishment and joy I felt after completing the next step in my journey.
My internship has been very slow because we have seven interns and only one full–time person Dr.
Lowe, LCPC, one part–time Tiffany, LCPC, and MB, MSW, CADC. Lately, a lot of clients have
been canceling their sessions while I am at the agency interning. The only type of contact or
discussions about Social Work practice is when we have our group supervision with MB.
Since the agency does not have many clients, Dr. Lowe promotes us to participate in the events
going on in the Aurora community; by exposing the interns to the mezzo level of Social Work. I
have attended a couple of occasions this period, a seminar Taking It Personal: Why Gender Violence
is an Issue for All Men, and Internet Safety for Children discussed cyberbully, "swatting," internet
predators and the consequences of "sexting." The Fox Valley Special Needs Resource fair where
vendors were promoting educational opportunities, recreational programs, therapy services, free
government services, employment opportunities and transition programs for the Fox Valley
community for children and adults with special needs. We hosted a table also promoting the East
Aurora Counseling, LTD. Two other seminars I will be attending is the "New Face of Homeless"
Symposium, and The Trauma–Informed Approach workshop. I enjoy going to these events because
I feel that they are expanding my learning with the different subjects we are listening to and seeing
in person. So far, all the seminars, workshops and fair that I have attended are all on the mezzo level
of social work, which we seem not to address as much in our lessons.

community advocacy with different organizations for most of my adult life, and I have always
believed that if there is a problem work talking about then there also are solutions worth exploring
and implementing. I've had a long–term interest in the field of social work, however it was in 2008
that I decided this was the field for me. I had the opportunity to volunteer with the PeaceJam
Foundation at a local conference; PeaceJam is an organization that works with 14 Nobel Peace
Laureates to mentor youth, creating young leaders committed to positive change in themselves, their
communities, and the world. The impact that I witnessed on the young incredible lives was a
defining moment; I knew that I was going to pursue a Masters in Social Work; it feels like a calling
rather than the unfulfilling office career I once pursued.
My success as an MSW candidate will be enhanced due to a multitude personal qualities, and life
experiences that center on themes of social equality. I have a history of advocacy and passion for
social justice that will further the social work profession when working with marginalized
communities. I have been deeply involved in

A Study On A Masters Degree Of Social Work
A masters degree in social work contains the ability to open more doors than most people can
imagine. Someone who has held different jobs within the profession is Ciara Warden. Although the
currently works in the educational setting more than the typically thought–of field setting, Ciara told
me about her experiences in each. Throughout the interview, she made it a point to stress how social
work comes in many forms and a person does not have to feel stuck working in the same type of
position forever. Ciara received her Bachelors Degree in psychology and women's studies at Kansas
State University. She continued her education at the University of Kansas, where she received her
MSW with a concentration in adult mental health. All of the social work classes she took were
through the Kansas City campus. Her first social work job was working with children and families
in the home. Most of the time in that job was spent teaching the kids. After working in that
atmosphere for a while, she decided to move on and work with Heartland Family Service. Ciara was
the lead therapist on the mental health crisis team for Heartland Family Service. She worked with
the police who were called to check on the well being of a person or who arrived in a situation
where someone needed mental help. Her job required her to help decide if each person needed
hospitalized or if they would be okay on their own, and to make a plan with them. Field therapy
work became draining, so Ciara moved on to

My interest in the elderly was beginning when I was a child. Growing up with my grandmother
deeply influenced my value and behaviors. She taught me to be independent , well disciplined, and
always be nice with people. Her kindness and positivity brought joy and happiness to our family and
nurture good relationships among family members. Because of all good things she brought to ...

Summary: Masters Of Social Work
I am a graduate student at the University of Denver working on my Masters of Social Work. I will
be working on my practicum at The Civic Canopy in Denver. I understand that this organization
does not have a direct tie to sexual health and education; however, I am passionate about this area
and hope to find a career here in Denver working in this area. Being a grad student, I do not have
tons of time to work to make an income and I am living off of the PLUS loan which covers my
housing and food. I do not have the money currently to pay for an event like this, though once I am
working at agency I hope to be going to this yearly. I believe this is an amazing networking event
for me, since I am new to Denver and will only have one year under my

Becoming A Social Worker
As graduation nears, I find myself reflecting on what it means to be a social worker. I have
questioned if the original purpose of me becoming a social worker was still my main focus, or had
something changed? I originally decided to become a social worker because I saw a need for
someone who could relate too and understand the military culture, and the experiences are men and
women in the military who need help. However, from my studies, I have learned that shared
experiences alone will not equate to me becoming a good social worker. I will still need to further
and continue my education. Such as becoming aware of new theories and evidence–based practices,
policies and culture changes. Nevertheless, I felt then and still do today that I can ... Show more

Being from the middle class afforded me certain privileges such as; access to support networks,
good health care, financial stability and good education" (Self–aware). Therefore, I have zero
experience or knowledge of what it is like to not have these privileges, which is why it is important
to have empathy for my clients and to always meet them where they are at. As a social worker, I
can't do that and I will strive to gain a better understanding of my clients by conducting research and
becoming more open–minded on the issues. There are so many things that I need to improve on,
which is why as a social worker my education never stops. However, I also believe that social work
is an art form. We are not all born artists, therefore it takes a while to master the art form of help and
interviewing clients.
After I graduate from PLU in May, I plan to continue my social work education at the University of
Southern California (USC) and gain my Masters in Social Work (MSW) with a concentration in
military social work. There I hope to gain a better understanding of the military culture as far as
mental health is concerned and graduating with my MSW and a concentration in military social
work will give me the credentials to work with the military service member, veterans and their
families which are why I became a social worker in the first

Social Work : A Field Of Interest Essay
Social Work is a field of interest to me because of the positive effort it contributes to society. Within
the social work profession individuals are striving to improve the welfare of those in need of
assistance. Social Workers assist a variety of individuals; from children, young adolescents, older
adults, mentally ill, substance abuse individuals, and many other minorities; as in LGBT members,
veterans, homeless people, and low socioeconomic status individuals. The broad mix population
fascinates me because within this field one will always be able to work in a flexible environment.
Social Work is used in multiple settings as in hospitals, nursing skilled homes, mental health and
substance abuse clinics, schools, correctional facilities, community centers, child welfare agencies,
employee assistance programs, and private practices.
The social work profession consists of the six core values of service, social justice, dignity and
worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. These core
values are portrayed within the roles of this profession by assessing and evaluating client's needs,
advocating for improving community resources, managing crisis situations, providing therapeutic
support, and referring client's to beneficial services. As well as, developing a dual client relationship
to strengthen the helping process and treating each client ethically. Social workers are constantly
progressing their professional expertise. They do this

What Is Social Work?
What is social work?
Social work is a profession that is centred around people – from babies through to older people. The
BASW Code of Ethics defines social work using the international definition of social work.
Social workers work with individuals and families to help improve outcomes in their lives. This may
be helping to protect vulnerable people from harm or abuse or supporting people to live
independently. Social workers support people, act as advocates and direct people to the services they
may require. Social workers often work in multi–disciplinary teams alongside health and education
professionals.
Employment
Social workers work in a variety of organisations. Many work for local authorities in departments
that provide services for children or adults. Some work in NHS Trusts and many others work in the
voluntary and private sector. A new development is the creation of social enterprises, whereby social
workers set up their own company, or work with others to contract for work.
Registered as a social worker
To be a practicing social worker, social workers must be registered. To be registered you must have
a social work degree (either an undergraduate degree in social work, or a masters in social work).
Once you have completed your degree you will be eligible to apply to be registered as a social
worker with one of the four UK regulators. The regulators exist in order to protect the public by
ensuring that only qualified and competent practitioners are allowed

Mrs. McIntyre does have her provisional licensed by the state board of Arkansas. She informed me
that she has taken the state licensing exam twice and failed it twice. She informed me that she is

"Provisional Licensed Master of Social Work license is good for one (1) year and up to three (3)

Being An Intern At The Salvation Army Center Of Hope
Caring, understanding, reliable, and thoughtfulness are just a selection of adjectives which describes
the life of being a Social Worker. Throughout various interactions in life, we will meet and
encounter different aspects of unforgettable experiences. Being able to rationalize and work through
these experiences is a part of meeting our developmental growth. As a young adult, seeking to
obtain an MSW is both exciting and rewarding in my life. Being an intern at The Salvation Army
Center of Hope has given me the opportunity to see first–hand how grateful and thankful people are
when their needs are met, which in return ignites my passion from within to help those in need.
Being willing and available to share and implement thoughts and suggestions to others about
unexpected life situations are a major part of being of social worker. For myself, being available to
offer solutions to people of all genders, backgrounds, religions and more engenders a sense of
purpose and accomplishment. My social work experience thus far has taught me how valuable
communication is from both the person needing assistance and the individual offering help.
Generally speaking, most people prefer individuals that will listen to them attentively as they share
their thoughts. I have realized that during this process, both parties are given the opportunity to
intake the information, before releasing any suggestions. Communication is essential, in order to
properly identify and fix the problem.

Personal Statement : Personal And Professional Goals
Personal/Professional Goals
As a child, there were times when I may have felt my voice wasn't being heard or that no one around
me cared about what was happening in my life. Those specific feelings caused me to act out. I later
realized that there were so many people and resources around me to help resolve what I believed to
be huge issues. This realization drove me to want to also be that person for a child who may feel the
same way I did.
These personal experiences have motivated me and shaped my choice to enter the field of social
work. As I have grown, I have found that my most rewarding experiences involve helping people
deal with life's everyday issues and simply providing a listening ear. My passion for people and
knowing that I will get a chance to constantly make a difference in other people lives is why I
entered the field of social work.
I am interested in obtaining my Masters of Social Work (MSW) from Walden University so that I
can be better equipped to continue working in the field of social work. Upon receiving my Master's
in Social Work, not only will I have gained more education and training, but I will also be able to
further assist those in need. I plan to use my degree by obtaining a position as a school social
worker. This will give me an opportunity to work directly with the children in schools to help make
sure that their needs are met and voices are heard. I look forward to empowering students and their
families to be successful as well as helping

The most recent experience that I have achieved is the internship at the Superior Court. At this
internship I am constantly helping individuals. There are many positions I do at this internship
including, working at the information desk, escorting customers around the court house, helping one
find the correct document at the Law Library, helping individuals file for an order of protection, or
simply talking with customers about their options. Individuals who come into the courthouse at the
Law Library are self represented litigants. These people do not have the funds for a lawyer to help
them and are doing everything on their own. Many times they are overwhelmed, upset, angry, and
confused about what to do. The purpose of interns being at the court is to help them through their
issues. One example of this is to simply find the right court file to fill out for a divorce or child
custody modification. I love being able to help these individuals because many times I am making
their day by helping them find the right form. It sounds simple, but to them it is enormous help.
Additionally, the protective order center serves women who are experiencing domestic violence.

The Profession Of Social Work
When defining social work, the phrase "a helping profession" is used quite frequently. The
profession is often misconstrued with promoting the distribution of welfare. Often times, this
stereotype amuses me because social work is remarkably so much more. Not only do people fail to
realize that social work is one of the broadest occupations that offers various work environments,
but also they neglect one of the key goals besides the act of helping: empowerment. Yes, the
profession of social work strives to provide the needy with physical resources to better improve their
lives through numerous institutional and residual programs, yet the most valuable assets a worker
can offer are abstract. Social workers are also supposed to educate people by giving them the skills
to sustain themselves in society long after they have received their services. By empowering and
teaching, social workers uplift and provide opportunity to those who are striving for more.
Whether we know it or not, we all have an engrained sense to help others. For some, it fades as we
grow older, and for others, it only grows stronger. I've always loved lending a helping hand; I'd like
to think I get the trait from my mother. Growing up as a young child, I knew I wanted to help people
and give back when I became an adult. The occupation that would aid in completing my
commendable task changed quite frequently. At one point or another I dreamt of becoming a teacher,
interior decorator, paralegal, and then

Working With The Elderly Population

  • 1. Working With The Elderly Population Reminiscing to 2010, when I was faced with my grandmother 's illness during the adolescent years in my life I knew that I had a passion to care for the elderly (aging) population. From this passion, it ignited a fire so strong that I pursue my certified nursing assistant certification to gain a better understanding of working with the elderly population. By doing so, it has been a great benefit to my life; aging is an inevitable experience that we all will go through during our life. It is important to ensure that our elderly individuals are still able to enjoy the best quality of life after retirement. However, as we age, there will be a lifestyle change that the aging population must encounter. Instead of relying on income from previous occupation, the elderly population, income will fixate, resulting in dependency on their 401k saving plan and other government related programs to assist with activities of daily living. This is why I choose to work with this population, to ensure that dignity, worth, and respect of a person is maintained. However, the aging population should not feel that they are being treated as a burden by the government or their families. In the United States, we undermine our aging population by treating them as though they are not of any value. In reference to this mistreatment towards the aging population can cause issues such as unemployment, health, and elder abuse. Social justice is about assuring the protection of equal rights, and ... • 3. My Career Path Life works in mysterious ways, and my path has led me to pursue a career in the Social Work field. My last two years of high school were unique because I was a full time dual enrolled student, which allowed me to graduate with both my high school diploma and my Associate of Arts degree. Now I am twenty years old and will be graduating with my Bachelor's in Psychology. Upon entering my undergraduate program, I had some idea of what career path I wanted to follow. I had taken many entry–level psychology courses while pursuing my Associate of Arts degree and it peaked my interest. At first, I wanted to be a guidance counselor and then I contemplated being a mental health counselor. It was not until I took a course the first year of my undergraduate career that I knew my future career path. The course I took was Issues in Culture and Society with a concentration in Death and Dying. In that class, I learned how beautiful death can be and how important it is for someone to have a good death. The class also gave me information on grieving for all ages and how to help individuals experiencing grief and this is when I decided to become a bereavement counselor. My mother died when I was seven and I had to grieve in silence, so I want to help others with their grief, so they do not have a similar experience to mine. In order to accomplish my aspiration as a bereavement counselor, I knew I needed to gain experience in the area of bereavement. I began an internship in an organization ... • 13. What Does It Mean For The Social Work Field? What does it mean to be in the social work field? This is an important question to ask someone who is deciding to join the social work profession. Personally, I believe that my career goals align with the mission of the social work profession, along with the Graduate College of Social Work (GCSW) school mission. An individual who commits themselves to the social work profession joins this field in order to improve and enlighten individuals (NASW, 2017). A professional in social work desires to support others through their work. Recently in June 2016, I volunteered at the Methodist Children's Home of Costa Rica. I spent 10 days socializing with young children and adolescents. Playing games with the children, and singing songs in their native language was just some of the activities I participated in. My time in Costa Rica was also spent at two other sites where we interacted with different children. While in Costa Rica I also helped construct a 10–foot–tall concrete wall and multi–recreational facility at the Methodist Children's Home of Costa Rica. Wow! What a task that was. Physically building and working to construct protection for the children was a huge demanding task. Looking back now it was worth the effort I put into the project. Just like building the wall, graduate school will be a huge task for me to complete. However, I know that I can finish graduate school and will drive myself to do the best that I can in my studies. It was an honor to provide my assistance in a new country and gain valuable information about a new culture. It was interesting to see how these children whom had been neglected most of their life could open up their hearts for a few short days to total strangers. • 15. Master Degree In Social Work Working toward a Master degree in Social Work often includes translating academic learning and theories into practice. Hence, there is a marriage between classroom content and field placement which offers a platform to learn and practice skills simultaneously. Also, this experience can help to build confidence while linking the importance of classroom discussion to practice. As a result of class discussions and reading assignments I am more cognizant when conducting bio– psychosocial that the client cannot be considered in isolation from his or her physical and social environment. I assess these areas more keenly with the intent that this information will shed light on how the community supports or hinders the client's survival and development. Also, this knowledge provides me with information about barriers that might hinder the intervention plan. Although my agency doesn't focus on the family, I assess this area as well to determine family dynamics in relation to supporting the intervention plan. Family members and other persons involved in the clients' lives often provide emotional support and resources which can assist the client in reaching their goals. Another concept I use to inform my work with clients is self–determination which is a critical social work value. Nevertheless, I am aware that clients often make life ... Through my years of volunteer and educational experiences, I have discovered a passion for helping children and families. These experiences cemented my resolve to help children thrive in a safe, caring, and nurturing environment. They are the most vulnerable population of people whose rights are often infringed upon due to their inability to speak up for themselves. Becoming a social worker will put me in a position to speak up and advocate for these at–risk children and ensure that they have the resources and help they deserve. I worked as a teacher's assistant for Intro to Psychology and Developmental Psychology, a Research Assistant for Neuropsychology, and a Peer Learning Assistant for Spanish. These three jobs taught me the valuable skill of organization because I had to schedule students to run their experiments, tutor students, and hold exam reviews. This skill will be very beneficial to me due to the fact that social workers have very busy schedules and are actively working on several caseloads at once. In addition, they must make time to travel to houses for home visitations, hospitals, schools, prisons, and courts. I will utilize my time management skills by delivering treatment plans in a timely fashion, especially if the cases require immediate attention. • 19. Essay For Masters In Social Work Indian nationalist leader Mahatma Gandhi once stated, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others". This simple yet powerful quote motivates me to remain steadfast in the mission of aiding others. I'm pursing a Masters in social work because by working in this field, I can educate, advocate, motivate, understand, and encourage resilience to clients from every walk of life. It is a profession that will allow me to practice both on a micro and macro level simultaneously. Lastly, working in social work gives me the capacity to challenge policies affecting disadvantaged communities. My interest in this field stems from growing up in a small, rural, poverty stricken town. This gave me a unique perspective on the world. My hometown had many children with potential, but because they did not have a positive outlet most of our future workforce leaders did not complete school. As a professional, I want to create an outreach program designed for high school students, from low– income communities, that pushes and encourages them to stay in school and seek higher education. Currently there are no programs in the area that offers educational assistance to these children. Considering the lack of resources available, the need for such a program is evident. My solution is to use social work to develop these types of services and create policies that can affect at risk youth in a positive way. • 21. Social Work Career As A Social Worker Social Work Career If you are an individual who seeks to promote human well–being and have an intense desire to help others, you might consider pursuing a career in social work. "Social work is a practice–based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people" (International Federation of Social Workers, 2014, para. 2). Social workers identify those who need help, examine their situations and develop plans to resolve their issues. They help individuals cope with issues such as substance abuse, finance, and personal relationships. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, advocacy is an important aspect of social work. Social workers advocate or raise awareness with and on behalf of their clients and the social work profession on local, state, and national levels (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015, para. 6). There are many different practices and approaches considered by the practitioner to determine an applicable approach towards intervention. Another variation of a social worker, (known as a clinical social worker) may also diagnose and treat people with mental, behavioral, and emotional issues. There are numerous career paths in social work, providing a broad range of opportunities and environments. • 23. Getting my Masters of Social Work Degree I have been working as a social worker for the past three years. In all these years, it has always been my desire and passion to acquire enhanced social skills and knowledge to help me empower disadvantaged individuals and families take control of their lives. My desire therefore to pursue a Masters of Social Work degree (MSW) has been inspired by over three years of continuous work with families, children, youths and adults who require support to cope and combat oppressive structures and social injustices. My role as a human relations agent at the Inuulitsivik Health Center in Nunavik, is the second reason why I believe Victoria's MSW program will be a good fit for me. I discovered from the Inuit population in Nunavik that the system has oppressed them for so many years but little is being to address their needs and aspirations. My current role as a child welfare practitioner is third reason why I am applying for the Victoria's MSW program. I believe the school's educational mission will further help me in working with individuals and families from a critical point perspective by focusing on the structural, feminist, and Indigenous levels of oppression. I am aware of my power as a child welfare worker and how I sometimes create a dominate relationship to a family with child protection concerns. Thus, I believe that the university's MSW educational mission combined with their scholarly mission to sharing and creating knowledge from a critical view could help me to improve and integrate more anti– oppressive practices as a parent child capacity building practitioner. Over my period of volunteer experience and professional work, I have taken special interests in children and families because conflicts in the home have steadily increased over the years. • 27. Social, Sociology, And Sociology Social work is centred on people, of all ages, races and class backgrounds to try to make their lives better. Social workers collaborate with individuals and families to improve outcomes and quality of life. It is an intense and responsible job and an employee's actions will have consequences, whether they are good or bad. Social workers ensure the welfare of vulnerable groups or individuals who need that extra support. Social work as a subject area includes elements of psychology, law and sociology. Social policy is the study of various areas of policy, within political or governmental setting, and is concerned with everything from the welfare state, to social services. Social policy is an academic study of theory, rather than current policies and draws from psychology, sociology, philosophy, and economics. What A Levels do I need? Each university will ask for varying grades and tariff points from their prospective candidates, therefore students are advised to check with their chosen institutions and degree programmes to ensure they understand what they need to obtain to gain admission. What are my study options? Social work degree programmes mix vocational training with academic learning, and the majority of courses will be three years in length. Some universities ask students to complete placement days, where they have to complete a certain number as part as their assessment. Most individuals will be taught in a classroom environment, which can then be applied to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Becoming A Master 's Degree For Social Work I, Carlos Delgado, truly believe that my past and current work experience has served as preparation to pursue my master's degree in social work. I am very aware that it takes plenty of hard work and dedication to be successful in a graduate program, yet I believe that my experiences along with my current work experience will assist me in gaining that success in a master's program. Five weeks before graduating from California State University Los Angeles (CSULA) with my bachelors in social work, I was offered a position as a housing caseworker with an agency called Homeless Health Care Los Angeles (HHCLA). I felt anxious and excitement because I was going to be dealing with the real thing now, and for the first time I was going to have the title that I always wanted to have, the title of a social worker. Working at HHCLA has allowed me to expand and improve my case managing skills and has also given me the opportunity to work on my clinical skills. Being a social worker at HHCLA and being an intern with the psychiatric social worker and the school of mental health at Huntington Park High School have taught me to be resourceful, because being resourceful helps me to better assist my clients needs. From 2008 to 2014 I was employed in an elementary school where I had to opportunity to work with the school's social worker in assisting both general and special education students and their families. Now that I am almost finished with my Spring semester, I was completely wrong. Reflecting back from when I first started this program, I have changed a lot in many aspects of myself. My professional self is has changed the most. Doing my internship, and now current job, in child protective services and my current internship at Davis Child Shelter, were some of the best experiences a person can ask for wanting to be a professional social worker. During my time in the master's program, there was been a couple of experiences in particular that has carried along with me. While in child protective services, witnessing New Port, an area in Danville, WV that is very poverty stickered, and seeing how people lived in extreme poverty, substance abuse, high crime rates, and overall general violence that would occur there. Infrastructure was horrible, the trailer homes the people living in were old, run down, and dirty, and the roads, if that is what one would call that, were broken, asphalt split in half, potholes large as cars, and many parts of the area were dirty roads. • 33. Mental Health Is Becoming Serious The rapid escalation of youth and adults affected by mental health is becoming serious not just in Indiana but all over the United States. In the last several years national tragedies and mass killings such as Sandy Hook has placed our government in the position of reexamining and improving access to mental health treatment. Although the government sees a great need for changing it 's unhurried I have witnessed mental health patients unable to get medication and have limited access to mental health care due to lack of insurance or other barriers. Mental health comes in many different faces some are being treated others are undiagnosed. The current economic crisis and environmental violence has created a fracture within our community as we witness to an increase in murders among youth we need to implement a change for our community in both mental and social services there is a great need for committed individuals that are not in it for the money but who are in this field because they care. This problem resonates deeply with me, I want to continue to grow in this field that I 've been working in since I was twenty–one years old to assist with being part of the solution to our growing crisis. • 39. A Career in Social Work A Career in Social Work I chose to do research on a career as a social worker because, based on my Holland and MBTI code, this career best combines the conventional, social, and realistic aspects of my personality. I also feel that this career choice corresponds with my personal values, as it will allow me to channel my communication and problem–solving skills towards helping disadvantaged individuals and families. Entering the social work field requires considerable preparation. In California, as in most states, a bachelor's degree in social work (BSW), as well as the completion of additional coursework hours in areas such as child–abuse assessment and alcohol/chemical dependency, is the minimum requirement to become a Licensed Bachelor's Social Worker (LBSW). An LBSW must work under the supervision of a Licensed Master Social Worker or a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, licenses which both require a master's degree in social work (MSW). Most California State University campuses in the southern California area offer accredited degrees in social work. In particular, the University of Southern California offers a top–ranked online MSW program. Full–time social workers must also be prepared to work 40 hours per week, occasionally working evenings and weekends to meet deadlines, meet with clients, or handle emergencies. In addition to fulfilling all these preparation requirements, successful social workers must be deeply compassionate, a good listener, and an effective ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. Social Work Reflection This class/semester is halfway through, and I started to make plans to continue my education at Aurora University. I applied for the Advanced Master program of Social Work at Aurora University; I was accepted first by a notification of an email from the school. Then I attended the Master Program for Social Work orientation. I registered as a new student and received my paperwork making myself eligible to register for my classes that will be starting in January 2018. I can't express the feeling of accomplishment and joy I felt after completing the next step in my journey. My internship has been very slow because we have seven interns and only one full–time person Dr. Lowe, LCPC, one part–time Tiffany, LCPC, and MB, MSW, CADC. Lately, a lot of clients have been canceling their sessions while I am at the agency interning. The only type of contact or discussions about Social Work practice is when we have our group supervision with MB. Since the agency does not have many clients, Dr. Lowe promotes us to participate in the events going on in the Aurora community; by exposing the interns to the mezzo level of Social Work. I have attended a couple of occasions this period, a seminar Taking It Personal: Why Gender Violence is an Issue for All Men, and Internet Safety for Children discussed cyberbully, "swatting," internet predators and the consequences of "sexting." The Fox Valley Special Needs Resource fair where vendors were promoting educational opportunities, recreational programs, therapy services, free government services, employment opportunities and transition programs for the Fox Valley community for children and adults with special needs. We hosted a table also promoting the East Aurora Counseling, LTD. Two other seminars I will be attending is the "New Face of Homeless" Symposium, and The Trauma–Informed Approach workshop. I enjoy going to these events because I feel that they are expanding my learning with the different subjects we are listening to and seeing in person. So far, all the seminars, workshops and fair that I have attended are all on the mezzo level of social work, which we seem not to address as much in our lessons. Austin State University School of Social Work Degree Objective: MSW I would like to bring social justice to individual lives by advocating for equality and ensuring access to basic resources for the most underserved populations in our communities. I have been involved in community advocacy with different organizations for most of my adult life, and I have always believed that if there is a problem work talking about then there also are solutions worth exploring and implementing. I've had a long–term interest in the field of social work, however it was in 2008 that I decided this was the field for me. I had the opportunity to volunteer with the PeaceJam Foundation at a local conference; PeaceJam is an organization that works with 14 Nobel Peace Laureates to mentor youth, creating young leaders committed to positive change in themselves, their communities, and the world. The impact that I witnessed on the young incredible lives was a defining moment; I knew that I was going to pursue a Masters in Social Work; it feels like a calling rather than the unfulfilling office career I once pursued. My success as an MSW candidate will be enhanced due to a multitude personal qualities, and life experiences that center on themes of social equality. • 45. A Study On A Masters Degree Of Social Work A masters degree in social work contains the ability to open more doors than most people can imagine. Someone who has held different jobs within the profession is Ciara Warden. Although the currently works in the educational setting more than the typically thought–of field setting, Ciara told me about her experiences in each. Throughout the interview, she made it a point to stress how social work comes in many forms and a person does not have to feel stuck working in the same type of position forever. Ciara received her Bachelors Degree in psychology and women's studies at Kansas State University. She continued her education at the University of Kansas, where she received her MSW with a concentration in adult mental health. All of the social work classes she took were through the Kansas City campus. Her first social work job was working with children and families in the home. Most of the time in that job was spent teaching the kids. After working in that atmosphere for a while, she decided to move on and work with Heartland Family Service. Ciara was the lead therapist on the mental health crisis team for Heartland Family Service. She worked with the police who were called to check on the well being of a person or who arrived in a situation where someone needed mental help. Her job required her to help decide if each person needed hospitalized or if they would be okay on their own, and to make a plan with them. I have questioned if the original purpose of me becoming a social worker was still my main focus, or had something changed? I originally decided to become a social worker because I saw a need for someone who could relate too and understand the military culture, and the experiences are men and women in the military who need help. However, from my studies, I have learned that shared experiences alone will not equate to me becoming a good social worker. I will still need to further and continue my education. Within the social work profession individuals are striving to improve the welfare of those in need of assistance. Social Workers assist a variety of individuals; from children, young adolescents, older adults, mentally ill, substance abuse individuals, and many other minorities; as in LGBT members, veterans, homeless people, and low socioeconomic status individuals. Social Work is used in multiple settings as in hospitals, nursing skilled homes, mental health and substance abuse clinics, schools, correctional facilities, community centers, child welfare agencies, employee assistance programs, and private practices. • 75. The Profession Of Social Work When defining social work, the phrase "a helping profession" is used quite frequently. The profession is often misconstrued with promoting the distribution of welfare. Often times, this stereotype amuses me because social work is remarkably so much more. Not only do people fail to realize that social work is one of the broadest occupations that offers various work environments, but also they neglect one of the key goals besides the act of helping: empowerment. Yes, the profession of social work strives to provide the needy with physical resources to better improve their lives through numerous institutional and residual programs, yet the most valuable assets a worker can offer are abstract. Social workers are also supposed to educate people by giving them the skills to sustain themselves in society long after they have received their services. By empowering and teaching, social workers uplift and provide opportunity to those who are striving for more. Whether we know it or not, we all have an engrained sense to help others. For some, it fades as we grow older, and for others, it only grows stronger. I've always loved lending a helping hand; I'd like to think I get the trait from my mother.
