Ramona, California, the simply heart–warming town on the outskirts of San Diego County, should
be on the list of sites to see when visiting San Diego. With a friendly face on every corner to a
historically rural town, Ramona is an under–rated place that should not be overlooked. The youth of
Ramona has a significant impact on the town. With town shops closing every Friday night to cheer
on the Ramona Bulldawgs, there is no uncertainty that Ramona is just one big family community
that welcomes visitors with a keen smile. Since there are very few ways to enter Ramona, each

Ramona contains over twenty–five churches. There is a church to fit everyone's beliefs, preferences,
and languages. Much like every other aspect of Ramona, the church environment is welcoming and
everyone is excited to see one another. Since Ramona is a small–town, people attend churches with
their closest friends, neighbors, and foes which allows the community to grow more as a whole.
With a population of 20,000 in 38.43 square miles, one can only imagine how the social
environment is friendly and comforting. A town where children never get away with anything
because parents and guardians know one another from various activities throughout the town.
Whether they know each other from their kid's activities or they're lifelong friends, the bonds make
Ramona a peaceful town. With having only one high school since 1894 familiar, smiling faces are

halo effect and recency effect Essay
As Director of Human Resources for People, people who need people.com, I have created the
following training proposal which will include common problems that occur when managers
complete performance reviews and suggestions for supervisors on how to eliminate or reduce these
problems.
The common problems I have identified when conducting my research for this training are as
follows:
Ø The "halo effect" which as the name implies causes supervisors to only see the "angel" in an
employee and blinds them by ignoring smaller problem areas that require growth and development.
(San Joaquin County Human Resources Division, 2002) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(San Joaquin County Human Resources Division, 2002)
Ø The "mirroring effect" is when supervisors favor employees that remind them of themselves and
have difficulty assessing and valuing the differences others bring to the workplace. (San Joaquin
County Human Resources Division, 2002)
The following solutions are what I am proposing to eliminate or reduce these problems:
Ø On the "halo effect," produce continuous documentation over the duration of the evaluation,
which will assist supervisors in writing the employee's evaluation.
Ø On "comparing employees," write their evaluations at different times, which will give the
supervisor time to center on one employee at a time.
Ø For the "central tendency effect," supervisors need to identify problem areas with identifiable
solutions and the leadership to resolve these problem areas. By providing information that is
constructive, the supervisor is helping the person become an improved person.
Ø On the "pitchfork effect," supervisors need to remember that they are evaluating the employee for
the entire time frame indicated on the evaluation. Constant records of performance, helps the
supervisor stay away from focusing on a particular event.
Ø For the "labeling effect," supervisors need to be aware of their insights and preconceived

Scholar Practitioner Project: Be There San Diego Initiative
While assessing the increasing burden of chronic diseases in counties across California, findings
revealed that although San Diego county comprised 9% of the state population, San Diegans
incurred nearly 15% of total expenditures for direct medical care of chronic diseases in the state of
California. This report indicated that chronic diseases– cancer, heart diseases/stroke, pulmonary
disease, diabetes, mental disorders and hypertension, likely contributed to chronic diseases
becoming the leading cause of death and disability in San Diego (HHSA, 2009).
The need for well aligned interventions for the diverse San Diego population to spearhead chronic

A Survey of Diabetics in San Diego
INTRODUCTION The entire concept of diabetes is about living on the edge of trouble. While Type
1 Diabetes is a biological condition associated with a fundamental flaw in the way one's body
produces or reacts to insulin a substance that controls and monitors sugar in the blood and cells Type
2 Diabetes is a social and cultural condition. Those most likely groups of people to have to live with
it are persons of non–white nationalities (increasingly Hispanics and Asians) who live at or below
the US poverty level and/or who have not achieved a very high level of educational advancement
(California Department of Public Health, 2010). And in places like San Diego County, California,
this puts a major number of people, young and old, quite literally on the border of health and
wellness disasters. "Diabetes mellitus," notes a 2010 San Diego health assessment posting, "is a
disease of abnormal carbohydrate metabolism, in which the level of blood glucose, or blood sugar,
is above normal. The disease occurs when the body is unable to produce or use insulin, a hormone
that helps move glucose from the blood into other cells throughout the body" (San Diego County,
n.d.). Type 1 generally reflects a naturally occurring demonstration of this; Type 2 is associated with
adjustments that the body makes as a result of sugar and fat intake, and thus aligned very directly
with obesity and poor health and dietary concerns. An estimated 90% to 95% of the conditions are
now Type 2, contributing

The Madina Collection of Islamic Art at the LACMA Essay
The Madina Collection of Islamic Art at the LACMA
Introduction The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) announced recently that it had
acquired "the remarkable Madina Collection of Islamic art. The collection contains works of various
media dating from the late 7th through 19th centuries from the vast areas that comprise the Islamic
world, from Southern Spain to Central Asia" (Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 2005). While the
museum already had quite an extensive collection of Islamic art, this particular exhibit truly adds the
collections as a whole.

It is very rounded and almost appears as though it is to be only held, and never set down. There is a
design around the rim of the cup. The design is a repetitive design and appears to be an almost
universal type design that could be attributed to any culture. It is something of a floral, or leaf design
and looks to be gold rather than silver as is the rest of the cup. It is a very balanced and beautifully
simple piece. http://collectionsonline.lacma.org/mwebcgi/mweb.exe?request=record&key=17763
There is a finial from the 14th century Northern Iran, perhaps from Mazanderan (Los Angeles
County Museum of Art, 2005). This piece is intricately carved from wood and possesses traces of
paint (Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 2005). It measures 14 inches tall and 6 inches in
diameter at its widest point. It is wide at its base and tapers off, not completely to a point, at the top.
It is a very solid as well as very patterned piece of art, or architecture. Like the previous items
discussed or examined, it seems to have a very symmetrical feel to it, as there is not necessarily a
picture to be seen, but a repetitive element that is seen throughout the piece, or all around the piece
in this case. The carving appears to be open carving in that there are holes in the finial where there is
no wood as part of the carved out design. This piece can be viewed at the following website:

years. (Healthy People 2020, 2010) In San Diego, the Health and Human Services Department

has been applied for by ColRich, a San Diego based home developer ("Generations"), to its lead
agency, the City of San Marcos. In this paper I will evaluate some of the findings of potential
significant environmental effects listed in the initial study, explain why these might have a
significant effect, compare them with other projects to reflect on whether these are indeed
significant as well as discuss mitigation measures. First, I will give a description of the location of
the project followed by a description of the proposed project. I will continue by describing some
findings of the initial study.
The proposed project will be located, "in the northwest portion of the City of San Marcos in North
San Diego County. The site is situated to the west of the northern terminus of Las Posas Road,
southwest of the San Marcos Highlands Specific Plan Area, northwest of the Santa Fe Hills

The Impact Of Modern Social Workers On The Community
Introduction Modern social workers participate actively in helping people to obtain rights, services,
benefits and opportunities that they might not otherwise obtain through micro policy advocacy, ?
often prioritize the needs of vulnerable populations when they engage in advocacy? (Jansson, 2016,
p. 21). Through community immersion, the social worker gains an understanding of the community
attributes and desiderata, requiring them to utilize their experience and expertise to advocate policies
that will satisfy the client?s needs (NASW, n.d.). Furthermore, when social workers immerse
themselves in the community, it becomes an act of care and concern to serve the community.
Compelling them to implement new changes, depict workable intervention schemes, and generate
attainable treatment plans to satisfy the needs of the individuals, families and community. The
community that will be addressed in this paper is National City. It is located five miles south of
downtown San Diego and ten miles away from the US–Mexico border in Tijuana.
National City is divided into three sub–communities based on their regional parks: Kimball, El
Toyon and Las Palmas (KTU+A, 2014). Because of National City?s unique location in close
proximity to downtown San Diego, it is considered an urban city, as defined by Jannson (2016),
with a lot of commercial activity and impoverishment. Depending on the social worker?s role,
knowledge on the type of community is crucial; when there is a deficit of

The Anglo-American Period
Anglo–American Period (1846 to Present)
California was invaded by United States troops during the Mexican–American War of 1846 to 1848.
The acquisition of strategic Pacific ports and California land was one of the principal objectives of
the war (Price 1967). At the time, the inhabitants of California were practically defenseless, and they
quickly surrendered to the United States Navy in July of 1847 (Bancroft 1886).
The cattle ranchers of the "counties" of southern California had prospered during the cattle boom of
the early 1850s/ They were able to "reap windfall profit... pay taxes and lawyer's bills... and
generally live according to custom" (Pitt 1966). However, cattle ranching soon declined, which
contributed to the expansion of agriculture. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1843, the project area was enveloped within a Mexican land grant known as El Rincon del Diablo
Rancho, which was granted to Juan Bautista Alvarado. In 1860, the rancho land was acquired by the
Wolfskill brothers who planted vineyards and raised sheep (McGrew 1988). In 1883, much of the
area was purchased by the Escondido Company, a group of Stockton speculators that subdivided the
property three years later. In 1886, a 12,000–acre tract was purchased by a group of investors that
formed the Escondido Land and Town acre tract was purchased by a group of investors that formed
the Escondido Land and Town Company, which platted the city of Escondido and lobbied for the
construction of a railroad connection to the coast. Aggressive land promotions during the latter half
of the 1880s drew many people to the area, and although growth had slowed considerably during the
1890s, settlers continued to arrive in the backcountry, establishing small farms and ranches
throughout the area. This migration took a sharp decline with the onset of the Depression during the
1930s, as many of the rural farmers abandoned their farms and moved to urbane area. The number
of people living on farms fell 63 percent during the 1930s, while San Diego County's overall
population increased by 38 percent (Van Wormer and Walter 1991). Nevertheless, farming and

FC Dallas Research Paper
I went to the FC Dallas game a couple of weeks ago to enjoy the sport I love most, but at Toyota
Stadium, Major League Soccer does not feel so major league. You may wonder why and the answer
is simple: the fans. The attendance of FC Dallas has been stuck in the bottom third since the
inception of MLS and yet, FCD is currently one of, if not, the best team in the league this season.
The youth academy system is rated number one because the last two seasons FCD led the league in
minutes played by homegrown players. You would think this would translate into financial gain and
spring them into the exosphere of the MLS, but FC Dallas does not get the national coverage like
the New York, Seattle, LA, or Orlando clubs receive on ESPN or FOX Sports, the budget and
revenue does allow for growth, they cannot sign a major European star, and they are never in the

The State Legislature established San Diego County, on February 18, 1850; it was one of
California's 27 original counties. Its estimated population of nearly 3,500 included about 800

San Diego County's name originates from –San Diego de Alcala.– That refers to Don Sebastian
Vizcaino, a Spaniard. If you are considering an investment in Carlsbad Real Estate, this fact might
be of particular interest to you. On November 12, 1603, Vizcaino sailed into modern San Diego Bay.
He renamed the Bay to honor his fleet's main ship, and his beloved saint. This name replaced the

it 61 years beforehand.

The Role Of Advanced Practice Registered Nurse
This paper will focus on the role of the advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), specifically
highlighting the family practitioner and the integral role played with the underserved. The focus will
be on a San Diego nurse's journey to become an APRN and her work in giving back to underserved
communities throughout the county. Mary Baker, MSN, RN, CNS, FNP–BC, APHN–BC continues
to contribute to nursing as part of her dedication to serving the underserved.
Historical Perspective
According to the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (N.D.), the progression of the advanced
practice nurse (APN) began nearly 50 years ago. From the advent of the first APN program to the
over 350 accredited programs and over 222,000 certified nurse practitioners in the United States, the
role of the APN has significantly increased and expanded a profession to better improve healthcare
for Americans (American Association of Nurse Practitioners, N.D., American Academy of Nurse
Practitioners, 2016). Of these, more than half are in the field of family practitioners (American
Academy of Nurse Practitioners, 2016).
One such family pracitioner began her journey nearly a decade ago. Following a career in
information technology, Mary Baker completed her nursing degree at California State University

Taylor Complex Fire; Great Hinckley Fire of 1894; and the 2007 California wildfires (Nelson,

In October 2003, San Diego experienced the Cedar Fire that claimed 273,246 acres, 2,820
structures, and 15 lives (CAL FIRE, 2015). It gained the moniker, "The Hundred Year Fire" because
another fire of its magnitude was not expected for another 100 years (San Diego Fire Facts, 2016).
This expectation was short lived because four years after this fire in October 2007, San Diego
experienced the largest wildfire in history (San Diego Fire Facts, 2016). This fire gained the name,
"Witch Fire" (CAL FIRE, 2015). These fires highlighted that there were not enough fire fighters and
resources to combat such fires. They highlighted areas that lacked emergency service protection and
showed a lack of preparedness (San Diego Fire Facts, 2016). Years after the fires, some changes that
came about include: wood shake shingles being banned on new construction and could not be used
as roof replacements (Mainar, 2013) and 100 feet became the new defensible space, an increase
from 65, between the fuel, for example vegetation, of the fire and the structure (Mainar, 2013).
There's an increase in code compliance officers in the field from two to seven (Mainar, 2013).

Agenda Item Case Study
On July 21, 2015 the county of San Diego's Board of Supervisors held a public meeting to address
the concerns of the county of San Diego. During the meeting Board Supervisor Diane Jacob
addressed Agenda Item number one, which was concerned with Sheriff's request for the
procurement of food, food preparation supplies and equipment. All districts of San Diego were
concerned with this subject. The main reason I chose this Agenda Item was because I work with the
department of Health and Human Services and part time contractor with Santee sheriff department. I
am currently leading a new program that supports the county's "Live Well San Diego" initiative. It
definitely provided me with a clearer insight on how decision are made on an administrative level
and what are the parties that are involved.
Each year, the Sheriff's Department purchases enough food, supplies and food– related equipment to
feed the County's in–custody population. The Sheriff's Food Services Division prepares and

California Anti-Smoking Laws
California has led the country in anti–smoking laws with the passage in 1976 of The California
Indoor Clean Air Act of 1976. It declared smoke a hazard to the general public and limited the areas
in which people could smoke in public buildings and outdoors spaces. California code Section 5148
prohibits smoking in the workplace; this includes any enclosed space at a place of employment.
With the state leading the way, cities got in the act too. In 2006 San Diego banned smoking at all
city beaches and parks. San Luis Obispo was the first city in the world to ban smoking in all public
buildings in 1990. They have now extended the ban to all parks and city owned outdoor spaces and
in April 2010 they banned smoking in all areas frequented by

Mexico won the right to California from the Spanish in the Mexican War of Independence in 1821.
The war is what ended Spanish control of what was known as New Spain.
1. Mexico began giving land grants for ranches which increased the population of San Diego. San
Diego city was established at the base of Presidio Hills which is now known as Old Town San
Diego. (6)
2. Mexican government established San Diego as a Pueblo with Juan Maria Osuna as the first
magistrate. The population of San Diego began to decrease due to its location being so far away
from the port of Point Loma. In 1838 San Diego lost its Pueblo status. (6)
B. Mexican–American war occurred from 1846 to 1848 and was started after Texas's Annexation
from the Federal Republic of Mexico.
1. The war was ended with the capture of Mexico City by the United States. Part of the Treaty of
Guadalupe Hidalgo was the Mexican Cession of the territory of Alta California.

The terminal lake ecosystem of the Salton Sea is located in the southeastern corner of California,

The Sea faces an uncertain future due to water delivery reductions imposed by the Interstate and
Federal Quantification Settlement Agreement (QSA) of 2003 (Miles et al. 2009). Signed in 2003,
the QSA was a deal between the U.S. Department of the Interior, California, and various water

As a person who has now lived in San Diego for over 22 years and a Latino, it is impossible not to
see the medley of direct influences of Hispanic culture in this border town. Because Hispanic people
heavily populate the city and it's proximity to Mexico, representations of this thriving culture can be
found in the city's art, food, religion, architecture, economy, and politics. To get a better
understanding of this, we must start at the beginning.

city of San Diego and the Mexican border. With close proximity to so many of the tourist attractions
(Sea World, Legoland, golf courses) located in the region, the city's population of approximately
260,000 residents plays a large part in keeping the tourism industry alive. Unfortunately, the local
residents are exposed to drug issues common to big cities like San Diego.
Drug Stats for the Chula Vista, California (CA) and San Diego County Areas
In recent years, the use of substances like alcohol, meth and heroin have been on the rise throughout
the state. According to a 2013 report issued by The National Institute of Drug Abuse, San Diego
County, including Chula Vista, California, saw an increase in the number of treatment admissions
for heroin go from 1,569 for the first six months of 2012 to 2,004 for the same period in 2013. They

A Study On Transportation On A Regular Basis
As a dually enrolled high school senior and community college student in San Diego County, I
struggle with transportation on a regular basis. Though I live with my parents, I do not have a car
and generally feel guilty about using their money for gas, but I need to get out of the house on a
regular basis both to get a break from my family and to attend school and various social events.
Because of this, I use the MTS on a regular basis and would suggest that all other college students in
need of transportation join me in using this fantastic service because it is accessible, comparatively
inexpensive, and environmentally friendly. The MTS has three major trolley lines that connect most

Considering that the average cost to own a car in the United States is over $9000 per year, or $750
per month, not including the price of parking permits on and around college campuses, a college
student using only monthly passes could save just under $700 per month, or around $8300 per year,
on transportation costs and a student using semester passes plus three monthly passes during
semester breaks would save just under $8500 per year. While public transportation is not perfect and
often does not allow for long range transportation, the massive amount of money saved could be the
difference between being able to get through college debt–free and needing to take out the dreaded
student loans. If this money is not needed for tuition, it can be used to buy a round–trip airline ticket
to nearly anywhere in the United States every month, making trips home even more accessible and
less expensive than they would be with a car. Even disregarding the financial benefits, using public
transportation is the best option

The High Rates Of Homelessness Essay
The County of San Diego is currently experiencing unprecedented high rates of Homelessness.
Decreased Funds from Housing and Urban Development limits the available solutions to fight
Homelessness in the area. San Diego 's "affordability gap" is what 's creating this latest increase of
being homeless. As long as the County has a high cost of living and low wages, San Diego will
continue on having homelessness Crisis. This raises an equally important topic for discussion is:
how efficiently is San Diego using existing funds and investing them to address this crisis? It would
be helpful to see a budget analysis showing how the various agencies in the city and county are
managing the funding they already have received, and compare it to what 's being done in other
cities that are struggling to manage dramatic increases in homelessness. The county 's baseline
funding is about $13 million a year from HUD, and after various bonuses, it receives about $17
million. But advocates have claimed the formula is outdated and gives San Diego County less
money than cities with far fewer homeless people. One of the government's factors is a pre–1940
housing unit, which gives older cities in the Northeast a big advantage.
Background of the Study The County of San Diego, located at the southern end of Los Angeles, is
one of the original twenty–seven counties of California. The County was integrated on Feb 18,

San Diego Wildfires
San Diego Wildfires: Smoke and Ash Debris a Public Health Concern
San Diego Wildfires
The county of San Diego is a unique haven to hundreds of state and federally recognized
endangered, threatened, or rare plant and animal species (The Nature Conservancy, n.d.). San Diego
is also a territory with a long history of environmentally catastrophic wildfires. The Cedar and Witch
Creek Fires are two of the most recent and notorious wildfires in California history for their degree
of damage in terms of acreage burned and overall expense (The City of San Diego, n.d.). During and
after these massive wildfire events is a significant public health concern related to respiratory health
from the effects of smoke and ash debris. The challenges presented in mitigating and managing
these health issues extends into county budget, public education, and cohesive multi–agency
prevention and recovery efforts. Moreover, participatory efforts from the residents of San Diego
County is key to the success of mitigating health risks presented by wildfire smoke and ash debris
(Phillips, 2009, p. 420).
Background
The Cedar Fire (2003) was one of the largest and deadliest wildland fires in California history
burning nearly 300,000 acres in San Diego County and killing 15, including 1 firefighter. A lost
hiker accidently set this fire from survival methods attempted with a flare. It resulted in evacuations
of thousands of San Diego residents and destroyed approximately 2400 homes (CALFIRE, 2016).

military base from 1917 to 1964 and was deeded to UCSD for higher education purpose. In this
sense, meaning and knowledge are produced through the use of language. In addition, this practice
of showing knowledge is a source of power when using social institutions to express thoughts on
society. As I gaze on the drinking fountain, I suddenly notice that some other viewers at the site
could not see the push button on the side of the drinking fountain from their viewing angles to the

different perspectives on the drinking fountain and the site form a network of power and

Cedar Fire: A Case Study
Significant communication challenges were encountered because radio systems used by federal and
state agencies are incompatible with radio systems used by local fire departments, law enforcement
agencies and other responding resources (Fire Siege, 2003). This lack of compatibility and common
frequencies profoundly impacted the ability to coordinate resources and exchange information. The
terrain and lack of infrastructure adversely affected the CNF communication system, further
hampering communication efforts. Numerous responding resources lacked the ability to field
program radios to establish communications with the task force or strike team resources. In addition
to a disorganized command structure and radio communication challenges, confusion about the
utilization of aircraft during the initial reports of the fire also draws criticism. In the 2003 San Diego
County Fire Siege Fire Safety Review states "Existing policies relating to aircraft cutoff and
shutdown times between State, Federal, and local agencies are not consistent" (2003, p. 34). State
and federal aviation policies are applied to different categories of aircraft, whereas local
governments have separate policies and regulations in regards to the usage of their aircraft. These

The county fire crew were working to protect the eight houses that were in danger of severe
flooding due to a levee failing in San Bernardino County. Throughout California, there were many

For the people in California that did not have to worry about the mudslides, the storm was good

Earthquakes are common to California. In 2010 a 6.9 scaled earthquake struck San Diego resulting
in minor damage to property, but no actual injuries (Azpiri 2010). Earthquakes have amplified
throughout California over the past 5 years, so it is reasonable to prepare for a earthquakes as a
possible natural disaster in this community (USGS 2012). Earthquakes can cause serious property
damage and have large victim totals when reaching magnitudes greater than 8.0 on the Rictor Scale
(USGS). While most of the sky scrapers in California are up to code to handle earthquakes, there are
many urban areas with homes that are over 70 years old. An earthquake of a 7.7 magnitude killed
20,000 people in Gujarat, India in 2001, an earthquake even higher on the scale would be
devastating to even the most modern areas. These areas along with the many bridges and highways
must all be planned for in the event of an

The common problems I have identified when conducting my research for this training are as follows: Ø The "halo effect" which as the name implies causes supervisors to only see the "angel" in an employee and blinds them by ignoring smaller problem areas that require growth and development. (San Joaquin County Human Resources Division, 2002) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (San Joaquin County Human Resources Division, 2002) Ø The "mirroring effect" is when supervisors favor employees that remind them of themselves and have difficulty assessing and valuing the differences others bring to the workplace. (San Joaquin County Human Resources Division, 2002) The following solutions are what I am proposing to eliminate or reduce these problems: Ø On the "halo effect," produce continuous documentation over the duration of the evaluation, which will assist supervisors in writing the employee's evaluation. Ø On "comparing employees," write their evaluations at different times, which will give the supervisor time to center on one employee at a time. Ø For the "central tendency effect," supervisors need to identify problem areas with identifiable solutions and the leadership to resolve these problem areas. By providing information that is constructive, the supervisor is helping the person become an improved person. Ø On the "pitchfork effect," supervisors need to remember that they are evaluating the employee for the entire time frame indicated on the evaluation. Constant records of performance, helps the supervisor stay away from focusing on a particular event. Ø For the "labeling effect," supervisors need to be aware of their insights and preconceived ... • 12. A Survey of Diabetics in San Diego INTRODUCTION The entire concept of diabetes is about living on the edge of trouble. While Type 1 Diabetes is a biological condition associated with a fundamental flaw in the way one's body produces or reacts to insulin a substance that controls and monitors sugar in the blood and cells Type 2 Diabetes is a social and cultural condition. Those most likely groups of people to have to live with it are persons of non–white nationalities (increasingly Hispanics and Asians) who live at or below the US poverty level and/or who have not achieved a very high level of educational advancement (California Department of Public Health, 2010). And in places like San Diego County, California, this puts a major number of people, young and old, quite literally on the border of health and wellness disasters. "Diabetes mellitus," notes a 2010 San Diego health assessment posting, "is a disease of abnormal carbohydrate metabolism, in which the level of blood glucose, or blood sugar, is above normal. The disease occurs when the body is unable to produce or use insulin, a hormone that helps move glucose from the blood into other cells throughout the body" (San Diego County, n.d.). Type 1 generally reflects a naturally occurring demonstration of this; Type 2 is associated with adjustments that the body makes as a result of sugar and fat intake, and thus aligned very directly with obesity and poor health and dietary concerns. An estimated 90% to 95% of the conditions are now Type 2, contributing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. The Impact Of Modern Social Workers On The Community Introduction Modern social workers participate actively in helping people to obtain rights, services, benefits and opportunities that they might not otherwise obtain through micro policy advocacy, ? often prioritize the needs of vulnerable populations when they engage in advocacy? (Jansson, 2016, p. 21). Through community immersion, the social worker gains an understanding of the community attributes and desiderata, requiring them to utilize their experience and expertise to advocate policies that will satisfy the client?s needs (NASW, n.d.). Furthermore, when social workers immerse themselves in the community, it becomes an act of care and concern to serve the community. Compelling them to implement new changes, depict workable intervention schemes, and generate attainable treatment plans to satisfy the needs of the individuals, families and community. The community that will be addressed in this paper is National City. It is located five miles south of downtown San Diego and ten miles away from the US–Mexico border in Tijuana. National City is divided into three sub–communities based on their regional parks: Kimball, El Toyon and Las Palmas (KTU+A, 2014). Because of National City?s unique location in close proximity to downtown San Diego, it is considered an urban city, as defined by Jannson (2016), with a lot of commercial activity and impoverishment. Depending on the social worker?s role, knowledge on the type of community is crucial; when there is a deficit of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. The Anglo-American Period Anglo–American Period (1846 to Present) California was invaded by United States troops during the Mexican–American War of 1846 to 1848. The acquisition of strategic Pacific ports and California land was one of the principal objectives of the war (Price 1967). At the time, the inhabitants of California were practically defenseless, and they quickly surrendered to the United States Navy in July of 1847 (Bancroft 1886). The cattle ranchers of the "counties" of southern California had prospered during the cattle boom of the early 1850s/ They were able to "reap windfall profit... pay taxes and lawyer's bills... and generally live according to custom" (Pitt 1966). Aggressive land promotions during the latter half of the 1880s drew many people to the area, and although growth had slowed considerably during the 1890s, settlers continued to arrive in the backcountry, establishing small farms and ranches throughout the area. This migration took a sharp decline with the onset of the Depression during the 1930s, as many of the rural farmers abandoned their farms and moved to urbane area. The number of people living on farms fell 63 percent during the 1930s, while San Diego County's overall population increased by 38 percent (Van Wormer and Walter 1991). You may wonder why and the answer is simple: the fans. The attendance of FC Dallas has been stuck in the bottom third since the inception of MLS and yet, FCD is currently one of, if not, the best team in the league this season. The youth academy system is rated number one because the last two seasons FCD led the league in minutes played by homegrown players. You would think this would translate into financial gain and spring them into the exosphere of the MLS, but FC Dallas does not get the national coverage like the New York, Seattle, LA, or Orlando clubs receive on ESPN or FOX Sports, the budget and revenue does allow for growth, they cannot sign a major European star, and they are never in the "MLS match of the week." ... • 62. The High Rates Of Homelessness Essay The County of San Diego is currently experiencing unprecedented high rates of Homelessness. Decreased Funds from Housing and Urban Development limits the available solutions to fight Homelessness in the area. San Diego 's "affordability gap" is what 's creating this latest increase of being homeless. As long as the County has a high cost of living and low wages, San Diego will continue on having homelessness Crisis. This raises an equally important topic for discussion is: how efficiently is San Diego using existing funds and investing them to address this crisis? It would be helpful to see a budget analysis showing how the various agencies in the city and county are managing the funding they already have received, and compare it to what 's being done in other cities that are struggling to manage dramatic increases in homelessness. The county 's baseline funding is about $13 million a year from HUD, and after various bonuses, it receives about $17 million. But advocates have claimed the formula is outdated and gives San Diego County less money than cities with far fewer homeless people. • 66. San Diego Wildfires San Diego Wildfires: Smoke and Ash Debris a Public Health Concern San Diego Wildfires The county of San Diego is a unique haven to hundreds of state and federally recognized endangered, threatened, or rare plant and animal species (The Nature Conservancy, n.d.). San Diego is also a territory with a long history of environmentally catastrophic wildfires. The Cedar and Witch Creek Fires are two of the most recent and notorious wildfires in California history for their degree of damage in terms of acreage burned and overall expense (The City of San Diego, n.d.). During and after these massive wildfire events is a significant public health concern related to respiratory health from the effects of smoke and ash debris. The challenges presented in mitigating and managing these health issues extends into county budget, public education, and cohesive multi–agency prevention and recovery efforts. Moreover, participatory efforts from the residents of San Diego County is key to the success of mitigating health risks presented by wildfire smoke and ash debris (Phillips, 2009, p. 420). Background The Cedar Fire (2003) was one of the largest and deadliest wildland fires in California history burning nearly 300,000 acres in San Diego County and killing 15, including 1 firefighter. A lost hiker accidently set this fire from survival methods attempted with a flare. It resulted in evacuations of thousands of San Diego residents and destroyed approximately 2400 homes (CALFIRE, 2016). The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. The Drinking Fountain at the University of California,... On February 15th, 2014, I took a trip to the drinking fountain at the University of California, San Diego that was assigned by Professor B for my second writing assignment. The drinking fountain is made out of granite that has been polished. It is situated on a cement pathway across from Yogurt World and the iconic Triton statue, which is next to the Price Center. The drinking fountain is in front of the Student Services Center building and next to the fountain, close to several outdoor seats and tables. The cement pathway is in between grasslands and several trees. On the same walkway, I see a large American Flag on a flag tower. I would later go on to discovery the rich history surrounding the monument on the walkway behind the flag ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Matthews. It simply states that over a million marines passed their marksmanship training in this military base from 1917 to 1964 and was deeded to UCSD for higher education purpose. In this sense, meaning and knowledge are produced through the use of language. In addition, this practice of showing knowledge is a source of power when using social institutions to express thoughts on society. As I gaze on the drinking fountain, I suddenly notice that some other viewers at the site could not see the push button on the side of the drinking fountain from their viewing angles to the fountain and therefore falsely mislead into the assumption that the drinking fountain for merely décor rather than a functional fountain. This realization strikes a chord in me as I realize that different perspectives on the drinking fountain and the site form a network of power and relationships that can shape meanings and create differences. It is clear that the meanings of the drinking fountain are "produced through the complex negotiations that make up social process and practices through which we produce and interpret images." (Cartwright 49) Continuing my journey at the fountain, I decide to bend down to touch the side of the monument to feel the texture of the polished granite material. • 70. Cedar Fire: A Case Study Significant communication challenges were encountered because radio systems used by federal and state agencies are incompatible with radio systems used by local fire departments, law enforcement agencies and other responding resources (Fire Siege, 2003). This lack of compatibility and common frequencies profoundly impacted the ability to coordinate resources and exchange information. The terrain and lack of infrastructure adversely affected the CNF communication system, further hampering communication efforts. Numerous responding resources lacked the ability to field program radios to establish communications with the task force or strike team resources. In addition to a disorganized command structure and radio communication challenges, confusion about the utilization of aircraft during the initial reports of the fire also draws criticism. In the 2003 San Diego County Fire Siege Fire Safety Review states "Existing policies relating to aircraft cutoff and shutdown times between State, Federal, and local agencies are not consistent" (2003, p. 34). State and federal aviation policies are applied to different categories of aircraft, whereas local governments have separate policies and regulations in regards to the usage of their aircraft. These policy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to the vast array of resources that responded to the Cedar fire some were equipped with 800 MHz radios rather than the traditional VHF radios, which was a major communication challenge. Additionally, the Board of Supervisors joined the sheriff's department to invest $22 million in a county regional communication system (S.D. Preparation, n.d.). The storm had brought up to eight inches on some mountains. That is not even close to enough of the amount of rainfall California would need to pull out of this drought they have been in for years. • 80. Module 1 SLP: Three Types of Disasters or Emergencies Module 1 SLP: Three Types of Disasters or Emergencies Emergencies and disasters can happen anywhere in the world at any time. One way to minimize casualties and ensures a quick recovery by a community is to have a proper Emergency Preparedness Plan in place for each particular local area. This report will discuss an Emergency Preparedness Plan for San Diego, California. The three most anticipated disasters that happen in this area are earthquakes, fires, and mudslides. All of these disasters have impacted San Diego in the past decade and continue to be a constant threat. Earthquakes are common to California. In 2010 a 6.9 scaled earthquake struck San Diego resulting in minor damage to property, but no actual injuries (Azpiri 2010). Earthquakes have amplified throughout California over the past 5 years, so it is reasonable to prepare for a earthquakes as a possible natural disaster in this community (USGS 2012). Earthquakes can cause serious property damage and have large victim totals when reaching magnitudes greater than 8.0 on the Rictor Scale (USGS). While most of the sky scrapers in California are up to code to handle earthquakes, there are many urban areas with homes that are over 70 years old. An earthquake of a 7.7 magnitude killed 20,000 people in Gujarat, India in 2001, an earthquake even higher on the scale would be devastating to even the most modern areas. These areas along with the many bridges and highways must all be planned for in the event of an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
