The Rescue Of 669 Children
Sir Nicholas George Winton was a British humanitarian who organized the rescue of 669 children,
most of them Jewish, from Czechoslovakia before the World War II in an operation later known as
the Czech Kindertransport (German for "children transportation"). Winton found homes for the
children and arranged for their safe passage to Britain.
Sir Winton was born in Hampstead, London on May 19, 1909, and was one of three children of
Rudolph and Barbara Wertheim. Winton's parents were originally German Jews but converted to
Christianity. They moved to London two years before Nicholas was born and changed their family
name to Winton. The family was rich, the father was a merchant banker. Nicholas, his brother
Bobby and sister Charlotte grew up in a big mansion in West Hampstead, London. The brothers
were very good fencers – Nicholas was selected for the National British fencing team in 1938. He
had hoped to compete in the next Olympics, but the games were canceled because of the war.
Nicholas entered Stowe School in Buckingham and studied international banking. He worked in
several banks in Europe: Behren's Bank in Hamburg, Wassermann's Bank in Berlin, and Banque
Nationale de Credit in Paris. In 1931 he returned to London and became a stockbroker. Nicholas was
a Royal Air Force Officer during the war. Later he worked for the Abbeyfield Society which was a
charitable organization that assisted the elderly, and for different refugee organizations.
Nicholas Winton was a supporting

Redeeming Santa Claus
Santa Claus, is known by many names: Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle and simply
"Santa". He is a figure that has been influenced by legend, myth, folklore and most importantly for
our purposes today. He wears red, is pulled around on a sleigh by a bunch of reindeer and delivers
presents to good children on the 24th of December.
The purpose of my post is not to argue about whether or not to teach kids about the full on mythical
father Christmas; personally I think it is a bad idea to go along with our culture on this; my friend
Clint Archer does a good job of dealing with this issue, click here to read it.
What I hope to do in this article is see if there is anything about Father Christmas that can be
redeemed. Now before you think my optimistic amillenialism has got the best of me, please read on.
The portly, joyous, white–bearded, bespectacled, red coat wearing, black leather belt displaying man
who carries gifts for children in a huge bad really became popular in the USA and Canda in the 19th
century . Thanks to the American media machine this image has been maintained and promulgated
in song, radio, TV, children's books and films. This image was further entrenched in the 20th
century, especially with big corporations like Coka–Cola taking Santa on board their advertising .
If we move back a few generations, some people say that the affinity Santa has for chimney comes
from the pre–Christian era of Northern Europe. It is said to be believed by the Norse that

Nicholas II And Rasputin's Role In Imperial Russia During...
During World War I Nicholas II assumed supreme command of the Russian Army in September
1915. Nicholas II's personal expectation of command grew out of one of the critical weaknesses of
his reign: his own incompetence as a ruler and as an individual. In addition to his naive belief that he
shared a personal communion with the Russian people, he ruled over a political system that could
not function without his immediate presence. This fact was not merely perceived in hindsight. When
the Emperor announced his decision to his cabinet, ten of the twelve ministers of state objected and
tried to convince him to reconsider. Tellingly, ministers in Imperial Russia served only at the
pleasure of the tsar and had no responsibility to the Duma, which ... Show more content on

But it was the desperate inability of Russia to mobilize its industry to a war footing, at a cost of
hundreds of thousands of casualties, that gutted the morale and ability of the army and ultimately
broke its loyalty to the throne.
Russian soldiers marched into combat in 1914–1915 blind, dismounted, and, incredibly, often
unarmed. Aerial reconnaissance, so vital given the vast distances and rapid pace of operations on the
Eastern Front, was nearly impossible. Cavalry could no longer perform this traditional function
rapidly enough. Even though Russia had 250 airplanes at the start of the war, lack of spare parts
(and frequent shootdowns by Russian troops, who believed that only Germans could use such
infernal contraptions) kept most aircraft grounded and Russian commanders

Personal Narrative : Nicholas Sparks
It was an early spring Friday morning in my senior English class when I received a text from my
dad: "I got us two tickets to the Nicholas Sparks movie premiere for The Lucky One tonight, and
word has it that there's lots of celebrities coming to town." Of course, I was ecstatic and could
hardly wait to get home from school and get ready. For my small hometown of New Bern, this was a
huge deal. It only happened to be here because it's Nicholas Sparks' hometown as well.
I drove home from school that day and immediately started curling my hair and putting makeup on.
My dad came home around 4:30 to pick me up so we could go eat downtown at our favorite
restaurant, Morgan's Tavern and Grill. After finishing, we walked down the street to the ... Show

One of the more famously known posts to her YouTube channel is known as "The Breakup," which
is a video she posted about her break up back in April of 2016. I told her how this video had lead me
through mine, and how she taught me a lesson that I would never forget: Don't let yourself be bound
in bitterness. This brought tears to her eyes, hearing from just an ordinary girl like me, how much
that video means to so many teenage girls.
As the night went on, the time quickly approached for the start of the movie. Of course, all the
celebrities had special seating in the front of the theater and the rest of the viewers filled the rest of
the room. The movie started, but nothing more than meeting Sadie was on my mind. I could've only
hoped that I would run into her again and be able to talk more with her. The movie was amazing,
especially since Zac Efron was in it. My friends were texting me through the whole movie in
amazement after seeing my post on Instagram with Sadie. After the movie ended, there was a small
after party for the celebrities and any adults that had gotten tickets to the show. With this being said,

The Decembrist Uprising
Constantine and people swore an oath to him. Later it was revealed that in some secret pact signed
in 1822 by Alexander, he stated that Nicholas would take upon the throne after his death. This
further gave the Decembrists an opportunity to lead a revolt and they guessed that all soldiers and
people too would be confused in such a situation. They decided not to swear an oath and refuse
Nicholas as Tsar on December 14, 1825 and call a revolt at the same day. The Decembrists Revolt at
The Senate Square The conspirators planned to gather their troops and march them to Senate
Square. The Decembrist called the revolt on the morning of December14, 1825 and approximately a
force of 3000 stood strong at the square, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This movement was the outgrowth of a national condition which can be traced back into eighteenth
century. "Decembrism" itself was not only a short– lived revolutionary idea but it was an attitude
held by at least two generations, a philosophy of political rebellion which came to climax on
December 14, 1825. Though defeated, the Decembrists left an indelible impression upon Nicholas
and throughout his reign, he always considered developments from a viewpoint determined by his
sad memories of December 14. In spite of the fact that it failed to achieve immediate positive
results, the revolt bore healthy seeds and it has been considered as the first revolutionary movement.
The testimonies of the Decembrists directed the government's attention to the gravity of general
condition in the state, to increasing discontent and necessity for economic improvements. The
government took definite measures and reforms were also introduced. Serfdom was also abolished
in 1861. Although the revolt remained a neglected and suppressed topic during Nicholas's reign but
Alexander Herzen placed profiles of executed Decembrists on the cover of his periodical Polar Star.
In spite of all the shortcomings of The Decembrist Revolt, this was the first ever open breach
between the government and liberal elements, and it subsequently in some way helped Russia

Maddy Michielssen Mr. Hyde English 2 Pre–AP, Period 4 Tuesday, October 17, 2014 The Notebook
Nicholas Sparks SETTING The story of The Notebook begins in New Bern, a city close to North
Carolina's North coast, in Craven Country in 1932. The story then fast–forwards to the year 1946,
still in the same city, New Bern, in the deep south of the Unite States. The story ends in the modern
era, today, in a nursing home called Creekside Extended Care Facility. PLOT A man named Noah
Calhoun retreated back to his hometown or New Bern, North Carolina at the age of 31 from World
War 2, which he was fighting in. He purchased an old, very sizable estate for him to enhance.
Subsequently, the newspaper decided to publish an article about his accomplishment. When Allie
Nelson, a girl who was enamored with Noah Calhoun when they were juveniles, sees the article
written about Noah, she knows she must go see him. Allie is engaged to a man named Lon, but
informs him she will just be leaving to go visit an antique shop. Upon her arrival in New Bern,
passion and vehemence surge the two. They spend a generous amount of time outside and eating
dinner catching up. Allie begins to conceive that Noah had composed letters to her for years
following their separation, yet her mother had secluded them from her. Noah and Allie came from
different households with different social statuses. Noah's family was not nearly as wealthy as

I. T DoesnT Matter By Nicholas Carr
In his 2003 article for The Harvard Business Review titled "I.T Doesn't Matter", Nicholas Carr – the
Executive Editor at the time, submitted to the public his views on the utility of IT in acquiring a
competitive edge (Carr N. G., 2003). Carr looks at the commonly held view that the strategic value
afforded by IT as a resource increases with its effectiveness and pervasiveness; a view he sees as
based on a flawed premise. He posits that a resource's value is determined by its scarcity rather than
ubiquity; that having what your competitors do not puts you at an advantage. A true enough
statement in any competitive marketplace, but a point easily overlooked thanks to the article's
provocative title.
The article was met with varied degrees ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While being the first to adopt new technology can confer an advantage, it also comes with a fair
amount of risk in the event said technology requires some measure of finesse to operate with either
legacy tech, or more ubiquitous tech. standardized technology offers interoperability and can
actually benefit a manufacturer who has secured market shares as it allows them to influence the
standards. An example of this is the incandescent light bulb which was less efficient then Tesla's
fluorescent bulb but remained a standard for decades because it was more widely used. The manner
in which this was achieved however, is a separate topic for discourse. This is true and not specific to
IT but technology in general. Carr identifies infrastructural tech as technology that is valuable when
it's shared, but can also be proprietary in some cases. In both scenarios he draws analogy to the
railroad where inconsistencies in track design can result in derailment ( a strong case for the need to
standardize) or where the value of the railroad came in its availability to businesses(and consumers).
Carr made another analogy, comparing business adoption of IT to the electrification of North
America. In the early 'rollout' stages, only those businesses within close proximity to generation
plants were able to take advantage the resource. This is a clear example of an infrastructural
technology as a proprietary resource. However, as electricity became more available and more

Life Of My Life
LIFE
It all started on December 6th, 2002. Nicholas Andrew Hulbert was born at 12:53AM at the St
Providence Hospital. I was born into a world full of unknowns. "Let's name him Nicholas, since
today is Saint Nicholas day!". My father yelped as my mother was holding me in the blue baby
cloud blanket that I was wrapped in. Although I do not remember anything about my life before the
age of 6, memories show that I had done a lot in that short span of my lifetime. When I was 3 my
father Eric traveled a lot, he ran his business and had to go on a lot of business trips. My dad was a
scrawny guy, but he definitely had a dad belly from all the beer and wine he drank. My mother was
not the same as she is now. She definitely was a lot more healthy and fit. She went out with friends
often and actually had a steady job. She had long brown luscious hair Occasionally, my mother
would take off work and then we'd get to go with my father on his business trips. It wasn't very often
but those were the good days, when my parents were together happily without family drama or
issues and maybe the fact that they were actually together. I wonder what it would be like now if
they were still together. But aside from that, when I was 4 according to my parents I was silent, and
I barely did anything. I was just your average baby with soft skin and a big ass. Then around the age
of 5 I started talking again and was back to normal. Not much happened in the time that I was 5, just
a regular life no fun

Why is Nicholas Sparks Such a Profound American Author?
"All characters come from people I know, but after the initial inspiration, I tend to modify the
characters so they fit with the story" said Nicholas sparks who is known for many romance novels.
In his writing he uses experiences and people that he is inspired by and puts them in a form of novel
that catches the audience's attention. After taking a look at the life and writing of Nicholas Sparks, it
is apparent that this writer deserves appreciation as a profound American author. With challenges
and achievements Nicholas Sparks has written some of the best romance novels.
Nicholas Sparks and his parents never thought he would grow up to become a famous author. He
was born on December 31st 1965 to Patrick Michael and Emma Marie Sparks ("Nicholas Sparks
Famous"). Nicholas Sparks didn't mind moving around for his father's education but they settled in
Fair Oaks, California. In 1974 Nicholas Sparks graduated from Belle Vista High School. "After he
graduated high school he decided to have further studies at the University of Notre Dame where he
got a full track and field scholarship, and graduated there in 1988" ("The Notebook"). As one of the
valedictorians in high school Nicholas Sparks succeeded greatly in his studies. Nicholas Sparks was
doing great at his track and field scholarship even setting a school record. After his freshman year in
college he was troubled with an achilles tendon injury. While he had lots of time Nicholas Sparks

Essay on Nicholas I
Nicholas I
Nicholas I has been portrayed, and perhaps rightfully so, as a strict and reactionary tsar. Indeed, his
internal policies were often repressive –– he sought to nip any liberalism in the bud, often brutally.
His approach to solving problems in the Empire and keeping control was to create the "Nicholas
system", a bureaucratic system defined by and completely based on absolute monarchy. Nicholas
revamped govermental structure by strengthening and centralizing bureaucratic structures to an
unprecedented degree. He did this as an attempt to deal with all of Russia's problems himself. At
most importantly the structure known as "His Majesty's own Chancery," which was the nerve–center
of the empire's administrative mechanisms. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There demands would have been politically disadvantageous to Nicholas – Poland was the one
European country in his Empire. If he lost Poland, he would lose his foothold in Europe and Russia
would easily be classified as simply an Asiatic empire. At first, Nicholas' attempts to squelch the
rebellion were disastrous–– his general was not effective at all in battle strategy and many of his
men were being killed by cholera. In fact, his brother Konstantin was killed by the same disease.
Finally, after switching generals, Nicholas was able to regain Poland. However, his Polish policies
made him unpopular with France and England. Public opinion was decidedly on the side of the
Polish insurgents.
Furthermore, Russia experienced a cholera epidemic in 1830–1, a potential cause for disorder.
Nicholas retreated to his summer residence in Peterhof to avoid the plague. The populace was left in
the care of an inefficient administration and started to grow restless. Rumors started going around
that there was no real cholera problem, but rather people had been hired to go around poisoning food
and drink. Mobs were formed and on July 3, there was serious rioting in the capital of St.
Petersburg. The mobs invaded hospitals, broke the windows, threw medical supplies into the street,
and attacked the doctors. After all this rioting, Nicholas returned to the capital to confront his
people. In a typical flourish of drama, he

Benefits Of Children Believing In Santa Claus
The Christmas Debate: Benefits of Children Believing in Santa Claus
Shortly after the trees appear barren after losing all their leaves, most houses and businesses also
alter appearances for the season. Many families drag out boxes of red and green decorations to
transform their homes for the holidays. Parents may brave the line stretching down the mall so their
child can tell Father Christmas, or Santa Claus, what he or she wishes to unwrap on Christmas
morning. Some question the effect on a child's health or morals associated with the belief in Santa
Claus, but with research and psychologists weighing in on the subject state there is no traumatic
evidence apparent in letting a child have faith in Santa Claus. Evidence gathered by these studies
may suggest a benefit for youth. Children should have the opportunity to believe in Santa Claus
because it enhances creativity and can improve mental health, shows young individuals an example
of giving without expecting anything in return, and when the time comes, forces kids to distinguish
the difference between fantasy and reality. Fraser (2015) found that the individual whose story
inspired the mythical Santa, also known as Saint Nicholas, originates from a bishop living in Turkey
during the third century. Nikolaos of Myra refused to worship the then Roman Emperor Diocletian,
and was imprisoned until Emperor Constantine freed the Christians five years later. He went on to
show kindness and compassion by anonymously giving gifts

The Rising Of The Decembrist Russia
The rising of the Decembrist Russia was due to a confusion over the next succession. In 1825,
Alexander I died suddenly. Alexander 's younger brother, Constantine, who was next in line, had no
desire to assume the throne of such a burdensome empire, so he gave his right of succession to his
brother Nicholas. Nicholas, however, had been left unaware of the official details of the change and
on learning of Alexander 's death he proclaimed Constantine emperor at St. Petersburg, at the same
time as Constantine in Warsaw was proclaiming Nicholas. For nearly three weeks in December 1825
the throne remained vacant. Russian officers and troops had come into contact with currents of
liberal thought, with new social conditions, and with new political institutions in western Europe
during the struggle against Napoleon. Upon their return home they saw that the idea of the rights of
man was regarded with contempt by their rulers, that their country by trodden under the heel of an
autocracy which made all progress impossible. As they had no legitimate means making their
desires known, they organised secret societies which agitated for reforms, including the
establishment of a constitution. These societies, afterwards called the Decembrists, were planning a
widespread uprising but, when Alexander suddenly died, resolved to take advantage of the
uncertainty that existed regarding the succession to attempt a coup d 'etat. But the plotters had no
clear plan or organisation and had made no

Comparing Nicholas I And Yertle The Turtle
Nicholas I can easily be compared to the story of Yertle the Turtle. Both Yertle and Nicholas have
similar qualities that can be exemplified. Nicholas I and Yertle are power hungry and in their very
different environments, show greed, a bit of arrogance, intolerance and corruption. Yertle the Turtle
began his life as a very happy little turtle. He was king of a nice clean pond , where everyone had
plenty of warm water and enough food to eat.. However, he decided this was not enough. Whether it
be greed or a need to command more power, he wanted to see more than just his one small pond.
"But I don't see enough. (stanza 2, line 4)" Yertle would do anything to see beyond his one small
pond. Similarly, Nicholas I wanted to control more under his reign in Russia. Both rulers were
willing to do whatever they had to in order to gain the power they craved. ... Show more content on

long as Yertle got to see all that he desired, then all was fine with him. Well, not all was fine with the

turtles down on bottom. Nicholas I was similarly intolerant with his army. He was intent on
acquiring a large army, in fact his army grew to approximately one million men. However, the men

Essay about Comparison Of Nicholas I And Nicholas II
Nicholas I and Nicholas II both struggled with similar uncertainties of a possible revolution. Both
came to a conclusion with a strong resemblance, and yet at the same time remained drastically
different when their rule ended. While the names may suggest that Nicholas I was the father of
Nicholas II, Nicholas I was actually Nicholas II’s great granduncle. The summarized
history of their terms below will tell of and compare the Nicholas’ reigns of the
Russian monarchy.
Nicholas I (1796–1855) was born at Tsarskoe Selo, the third son of Czar Paul I. Nicholas came to
throne in 1825 after his brother Alexander I had died and his older brother Constantine had given up
his claims to the throne. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nicholas’ foreign policy was directed towards the east. He increased Russian territory
at the expense of Persia soon after he came to the throne. In 1828 he fought a war with Turkey and
won the Eastern Shore of the Black Sea and a protectorate over Moldavia and Wallichia for Russia.
With great severity he put down a revolt of the Poles in 1831 and in 1849 he sent his troops into
Austria to help the emperor put an end to a rebellion of the Hungarian subjects. Nicholas hoped to
drive the Turks out of Europe. As an excuse for another war he demanded a protectorate over all
Christian subjects in Turkey. This demand clashed with British and French interests and brought on
the Crimean War in 1853. France and Sardinia joined the Turks to help them defeat
Russia’s ambitions. Nicholas died before the war ended. His oldest son, Alexander II
followed him as Czar.
Nicholas II (1868–1918) was born at Tsarskoe Selo, then son of Alexander III and the grandson of
Alexander II. He received a military education and traveled through Greece, Egypt, India, and Japan
before he became czar. In 1849, he received the crown and married the German princess Alexandra
of Hesse, who bore four daughters and a son. Russian liberals had hoped the new czar, who was a
pleasant and friendly young man, would grant badly needed reforms and lift his country to a
position among the free, progressive nations of the world. Nicholas was

while he wrote the book. He finally retired from sales in February 1997, when he managed to sell
Message in a Bottle to a Hollywood studio before the book was even completed (Bio Channel). The
subsequent years have brought more novels, as well as more Hollywood–blockbuster adaptations of
Sparks' work. The lineup includes The Rescue (2001), A Bend in the Road (2001), Nights in

Christmas Speech : Christmas Of Christmas
Christmas means Christmas...
There 's no doubt about it; the season to be jolly descends in December and now we 're in

much you can take. I fancy going to the Supreme Court to attempt to reschedule Christmas for

There 's evidence of festivities too, only several days ago, the ubiquitous 'Costa ' thermal takeaway

Christmas... there 's no escaping it. I really should treat the festive spirit as if it 's a much needed hot
bath, just shut the eyes and slip into a blissful trance. Until a question looms up... but does seeing
Christmas promotions in October bother you? In truth, it didn 't bother me until I thought about it,
because Christmas means Christmas and it happens every December – no surprises.

forward that Christmas means Christmas... something like: "Good day to you all, it has come to my

The Impact Of Industrialization And Collectivization
Industrialization and Collectivization from late 19th century to 1939
Soon after Lenin's death, in 1924, the Communist Central Committee launched the first five–year
plan attempting to position the new Soviet state into the club of Western developed nations. The
Bolsheviks wanted first to demonstrate that the communist ideology could match the achievements
of those countries and do so by uplifting standards of living of workers and peasants.
Though a true economy needs a multitude of interrelated skills and business flows to achieve
efficiency, the Bolsheviks had simplified the masses into two major classes, the "Workers" and
"Peasants" (this is well exemplified by the hammer and sickle on the Soviet flag).

without each other. Their notebook filled with love stories just couldn't stop them from falling in
love and being with each other. When Allie goes to visit Noah in the book, Noah reads some of the
notebook about what they did over that summer with Allie. That would hopefully make her fall back
in love with Noah again.
REACTION
In the book "The Notebook", the meaning of unconditional love was emphasized through what
happened in the characters' experiences. It can be observed through the flashbacks that since the
main characters were too young at the time they both met each other, they had the tendency to feel

Alexander II And The Russian Revolution
In the 1800's Russia was facing a very difficult time. Russia's recent defeat in the Crimean war was
a wake up call to the autocracy. This defeat proved to the autocracy that Russia had fallen
dangerously behind their western neighbors, ultimately making it easy for other countries to attach
and invade. At that point, Russia knew it was time for a change and it started with Tsar Alexander II.
Alexander II took over as emperor due to his fathers (Nicholas I) death in St. Petersburg. Some say
the reason for Russia's backward spiral was because of him. However, in 1855 the reign of
Alexander II in Russia began and during his time he directed a period of political and social reforms.
Some of the reforms Alexander II thought had to be changed included: education, military,
government, and judicial. Even after trying to make multiple changes and reforms to better the
government, someone was still not clicking in the Russian government. The main reason the society
had so many problems dealt with the peasants. As many soviet historians have claimed, these
reforms were put in place to pacify the peasantry in order to ward off revolution. During this time
the peasants had to work on their lord owners land and didn't have many other options. While under
the new Tsar Alexander II the government ran into a dry wall and needed a way out. Alexander II
did something that to this day goes down as two perspectives. The first one can be seen as a charter

Sparks' Style
Stylistic elements are used by many authors in different ways. Nicholas Sparks has a clear style that
is easy to catch on to. In The Notebook and The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks, the author uses
elements to make a comparison through the two stories. The most distinguish elements he uses are
symbolism, imagery, and diction.
One of the elements Nicholas Sparks uses is symbolism. Sparks includes symbolism in his stories to
contribute to the thought of fate. The most significant symbol in The Notebook is Noah's letters that
he writes to Allie. The letters symbolize his everlasting love for her. On page 157, Noah says, "I
wrote to you for a year and I never got anything back from you, but I still had hope"(The Notebook).
He wishes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sparks uses imagery for the reader to picture things the characters are going through. In The
Notebook, Sparks gives his readers a thought of Allie and Noah watching swans and ducks on a lake
at sunset. "We sit silently and watch the world around us"(The Notebook 103). Readers can picture
Allie and Noah sitting there at the lake watching what is going on around them. According to
thecreviews.com, "Not only do we get to see the beginnings of a relationship, we also get to see one
very advanced in years, but no less passionate for the passage of time"(The Review Club). The
author is proving readers can see how the relationship grows in the story through imagery. In The
Best of Me, Sparks uses imagery to give readers a better understanding of how the story plays out.
Sparks says, "Dawson carved the word forever into Tuck's workbench"(The Best of Me 103). This
was while Dawson and Amanda were still together as teenagers. Readers can imagine two teens
carving into wood and seeing what it looks like with their initials in it. He uses another piece of
imagery on page 177, "Walking beside her, she felt Dawson reach for her hand..." She could trace
the years of labor engraved into his callouses. "Tiny wounds had scarred his palms, but his touch
was improbably gentle"(The Best of Me). This type of imagery helps visualize Amanda and
Dawson's intimate moments that remind them of their past. Sparks uses vivid imagery to make the
reader feel like they are watching the love story

Santa Claus Stereotypes
Dreams of a White Christmas Without a doubt, Santa Claus is one of America's, if not the world's,
most iconic figures. A symbol of the secular West's religion of consumerism, Santa Claus and his
twelve reindeer have hijacked the holiday dedicated to the birth of Jesus Christ, and replaced it with
the gospel of spending. As both a cultural icon and the patron saint of capitalism, the depiction of
Santa Claus in recent years has been seriously debated. While today he is near universally depicted
as a portly old man, in a red and white suit and with a long, white beard, some argue that Santa's
image should reflect the changing demographics of the American public. Last year, a national debate
ensued after author Aisha Harris wrote for Slate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
. . Making Santa Claus an animal rather than an old white male could spare millions of nonwhite
kids the insecurity and shame that I remember from childhood. Whether you celebrate the holiday or
not, Santa is one of the first iconic figures foisted upon you: He exists as an incredibly powerful
image in the imaginations of children across the country (and beyond, of course). That this genial,
jolly man can only be seen as white–and consequently, that a Santa of any other hue is merely a
"joke" or a chance to trudge out racist stereotypes–helps perpetuate the whole "white–as–default"
notion endemic to American culture (and, of course, not just American culture).
Despite the surface frivolity of this argument, it highlights some deeper issues endemic in race
politics in contemporary America. While the "white–as–default" notion may not strike many white
Americans as particularly problematic, if they even notice it, it does make sense that children would
like to see cultural images that reflect themselves, and not in ways that are merely comical or ironic.
However, when Megyn Kelly at Fox news read Harris's argument, she took an entirely different
stance on the preferable imagery of Santa Claus. In her segment, Kelly addresses the children and
adult members of her audience by

To What Extent Did Alexander Ii Deserve His Title of the...
Does Alexander II truly deserve the title of liberator? To liberate is to set free (a group or individual)
from legal, social or political restrictions. There is evidence to suggest that he disliked serfdom.
Even his father, Nicholas I, believed that serfdom was an "evil palpable to all," and Alexander II was
certainly even more liberally educated than his father.
His arguably most fundamental reform was the emancipation of serfdom in 1861. As he said, "It is
best to abolish serfdom from above than to wait until it abolishes itself from below". This quote
demonstrates his realization that reform was needed. Many saw serfdom as Russia's biggest
handicap in development into a new modern era, to be the equal of other European powers. There ...

Milyutin's reforms made the army more civilized and efficient–the army was made to be more
accommodating for the soldiers with the army methods being made more humane. This meant that
training was made more relaxed and corporal punishment was banned. Shorter services meant that
the army was no longer seen as a 'prison life sentence'. The success of the reform was due to the
efforts of Dmitri Milyutin, not Alexander II, but overall successful nonetheless. Furthermore, the
success of the reform was not measured in the number of victories in battle, but the way in which it
introduced a sense of professionalism and discipline in soldiers. This gave birth to modern military
strategies and more effective combat tactics.
In 1864, Alexander introduced a modern western–style judicial system based on the French system
that was aimed to be "equal to all our subjects." The salaries of judges were also increased, making
them less likely to accept bribes, thus decreasing corruption. Further reforms included the opening
of courts to the public, which drastically increased freedom of expression and opportunities of
careers in law. As historian Hugh Seton–Watson argues, "the court–room was the one place in
Russia where real freedom of speech prevailed." However, the success of these reforms can be
questioned as the police of the Third Section could arrest people on demand and political and
military cases were soon

Santa Claus Myths
Saint Nicholas, myth or legend? In order to determine the merits of Santa Claus and his effects on
Christmas, we must objectively review how his story aligns with the story of Jesus Christ. Although
Jesus is the reason for the season, distractions such as commercialism, religion and cultural division
have all played a part in detracting from this core message, however, these things can all be
reasoned with truth. But how do you reason with fiction? How can we inject fantasy into the center
of truth and maintain its veracity?
In examining the influence of Santa Claus on Christmas, we must first highlight his origin. Forbes

The concept of Santa Claus is something we are supposed to grow out of. Its celebrated as good,
wholesome fun for children, but how does he work alongside God. If we tell children that both
Santa and God are real and expect them to grow beyond one, then why not both. In truth they both
require the same substance to believe in there existence; faith in the unseen are both required to
believe, but faith in a lie is manipulation. The potency of Jesus Christ birth and ultimate, salvation of
humanity, is put on undue trial when one story is revealed as lie. Jesus informs us in Matthew 18:6–
7, but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for
him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.
"Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come;
but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes! (New American Standard Bible)

The Real Santa Claus Similarities
The Real Santa Claus
Saint Nicholas was a rich, kind Bishop who lived in the fourth century in Asia Minor. Santa Claus,
as seen in the 1994 movie, The Santa Clause, is portrayed as a rosy–cheeked, chubby divorced
father who carries a cashmere bag of toys into homes of good children. While these two tales are
many, many centuries apart, it is interesting to see how it has evolved over time and the similarities
and differences between them. Santa Claus, from The Santa Clause (1994) movie, may have more
similarities to the tale from the fourth century than what we think. St. Nicholas Similarities The

Dickens' Creation of a Picture of Nineteenth Century School in Nicholas Nickleby
This essay demonstrates how Charles Dickens, the author of the novel 'Nicholas Nickleby' creates
an image of the 19th century school Dotheby's Hall School for Boys. Also I will be discussing the
conditions of the school, the description of the boys and the protagonists (Mr. Squeers, Smike and
Nicholas.) In the 19th century the rich students were treated pleasantly because they had the money
to pay the school however the poor students were treated harshly. Also, in the 19th century there was
no social service so the teachers could do as they wished to the students.

In addition here is another quotation 'an unhealthy looking boy with warts all over his hands.' This
portrays that the children are not being given any medicine for any wounds. Dickens is trying to
make the reader create a picture that makes them feel repentant for the boys.
However, Dickens shows the character Mr. and Mrs. Squeers as the symbol of evil and violence in
this novel. Mr. Squeers has power in the beginning of the story but through the extent of the novel
he looses the power to Nicholas Nickleby and the children gain hope from Nicholas Nickleby. For
example 'administering a cut with the cane'. This examines that Mr. Squeers has the power to do
what ever he wishes to the children. Mr. Squeers looses his power over the children at the end for
example 'beat the ruffian till he roared for mercy'. This studies how Mr. Squeers is weakened by one
man. Nickleby also uses violence to gain power over Mr. Squeers Nickelby uses violence for the
right reason.
The character Nickleby is shown to be nice, mature and understanding. Nickleby stands up to Mr.
and Mrs. Squeers for example 'flung Squeers from him with all the

Tsar Nicholas I: Orthodoxy, Autocracy And Nationality
The slogan of Tsar Nicholas I was: "Orthodoxy, Autocracy, and Nationality" (Official Nationality),
suggesting that he views government as something with should be tied to Russian tradition with no
room for progressivism. This slogan also suggests that he believes Orthodox Christianity and the
Russian Orthodox Church should be protected and a remain a central tenet of Russian ideology, as
well as believing that there should be a strong national spirit – both of which would influence faith
in the Monarch and the ruling dynasty.
In 1848, there were several revolutions occurring in Europe (France, Italy, Germany, Austrian
Empire), which intended to overthrow the ruling monarchies and install republican governments.
During 1949, Tsar Nicholas I sent in Russian troops to aid the Habsburgs in repressing uprisings and
ensuring that power remained in the hands of the Habsburg dynasty.

Nicholas II Twilight Of The Empire Summary
Lieven, D. B. (1993). Nicholas II: Twilight of the Empire. New York: St. Martin's Press. The
purpose of Lieven's piece is to present a new assessment of Tsar Nicholas II and his reign over
Russia. The author argues that his book takes a more sympathetic interpretation towards the Russian
leader than many Soviet or Western scholars do. Therefore, in his literary piece, Lieven focuses on
the political and dynastic elements of Nicholas II's reign as well as the social and political contexts
in which Nicholas II was living. By doing so, Lieven demonstrates that Nicholas was not solely to
blame for Imperial Russia's collapse. While Lieven does believe that Nicholas II's indecisive nature
paired with his feelings of insecurity did influence the later revolution, he ... Show more content on

This revolution brought newly freed peasants into major cities and the low wages and long work
hours lead to the creation of radical parties. Moreover, both before and during Nicholas II's rule
there was a decrease in the amount the dynastic power that the autocracy was able to use. For
instance, at the time of Nicholas II's sovereignty he was forced to sign the Manifesto of October 22,
which created the DUMA, or rather the first parliamentary system in Russia. The author argues that
this attempt to shift power from the autocrat to the people coupled with the limited amount of power
that Nicholas II was actually able to enact as tsar only caused more turmoil during his reign. Lieven
concludes his book by pointing out the similarities between Nicholas II and other rulers, including
the imperial emperors of Japan and German, as well as drawing parallels between the Tsar's issues
with ruling an empire to issues that were current within 1990s Russia. This allows the reader to draw
further parallels and conclude that Nicholas II may not have been an inept despot, as other sources
claimed, but rather he was a smart

Book Review Of The Notebook By Nicholas Sparks
I read The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, a 250 page novel published on October 1, 1996. This book
can be classified as realistic fiction, but is considered to be a romance novel due to the heart pulling
plot line of two star–crossed lovers. My attention was caught quickly when I saw this book, because
I had watched the movie with my girlfriend which motivated me to read it. It took me about three
days to read behind Mrs. Kosters desk, each day during the same week; it was a quick and easy read.
This work was completely fiction; however, Sparks was inspired by his wife's beloved grandparents.
They had spent over sixty years together, with their story being shared with Sparks and his wife,
inspiration from their love made its way into the book. Noah comes back, after fighting in World
War ll, to his home in New Bern, Carolina. Where he spends his days building a house to distract
himself from remencising on a girl he fell in love with over a summer shared together. Allie, who is
about to get married, stumbles upon a newspaper with Noah on it; curiousity gets the best of her and
she decides to visit him. Both have been separated for fourteen years due to social class, with Allie
coming from a wealthy family, and Noah who worked at a lumberyard. Reuniting brings out a tidal
wave of emotions and memories that have been long locked away from both of them, with Noah
being in bewilderment and saying "I still can't believe it's you. How did you find me?" (Sparks 39).

Love And Love In Nicholas Sparks's The Last Song
"A romantic film is a love story recorded in visual media for broadcast in theaters and on TV. It
focuses on passion, emotion, as well as the affectionate, romantic involvement of the main
characters. It shows their journey that's genuinely strong and true along with where the pure
romantic love will take them through dating" (Dictionary). Romantic films tell the story of two
unlikely characters who meet and fall in love. As the films continue, the characters are torn apart,
and soon come to the realization of how much they truly love each other as they search for a way to
get back together. The Last Song (2010) is a film that shows the struggle of two young teens that fall
in love but are split apart when tragedy hits them.
On September 1, 2009, Nicholas Sparks released his fourteenth book, The Last Song which is about
a young girl named Ronnie Miller, who spends the summer with her father at Wrightsville Beach,
where he's been living the past few years. In the beginning of the movie, she's a rebellious
seventeen–year–old girl, but soon changes her ways when she meets the boy of her dreams, Will

up with the idea of his book from his past book. He's always written about the tragedy in life and
love at first sight, what he hasn't done is taken that love and used it with teens around the age of
seventeen. Sparks said, "Usually after those words pop into my head, I move into a

Nicholas I: Chief Guardian Of The Holy Places
When examining the projection of power of each individual political leader in the nineteenth
century, it is not hard to see that among the great powers only Nicholas I had the freedom to initiate
any armed encounter in whatever way he desired. Although President Louis–Napoleon (or Napoleon
III as he established dictatorship in 1851) had the power to do so as well, he chose to approach
conflicts in a more calculated manner. This is because Napoleon III wished to establish sound
relations with Britain and harness his ideology of nationalism, and this required him to be cautious
when treating public opinions. (reader, Rich 104) Thus, it is in contrary to many's belief that
Nicholas I was indeed a more aggressive political leader than Napoleon during the 1850s, especially
throughout the Eastern Crisis. Nicholas I consistently pushed for more hostile measures especially in

This challenge to Russia, carefully provoked by Napoleon for the keys of the Holy Places, aroused
the question of dominance over the Near East. I believe that the reason Napoleon challenged for the
right to be the chief guardian of the holy places is mostly to please the Catholics who had elected
him as leader in the first place. Since he himself had claimed candidly that "the question of the Holy
Places and everything affecting them was of no importance whatever to France." However, it is
Napoleon's calculated strategy to provoke Russia especially in Europe in hope that the tsar would
take actions against the Ottoman Empire in order to achieve his primary objective: to break up the
order of the European international system and the alliances. (Why Rich 20–21) Nicholas I, on the

How Did Industrialization And Collectivization
Industrialization and Collectivization from late 19th century to 1939
Soon after Lenin's death, in 1924, the Communist Central Committee launched the first five–year
plan attempting to position the new Soviet state into the club of Western developed nations. The
Bolsheviks wanted first to demonstrate that the communist ideology could match the achievements
of those countries and do so by uplifting the standards of living of workers and peasants.
Though a true economy needs a multitude of interrelated skills and business flows to achieve
efficiency, the Bolsheviks had simplified the masses into two major classes, the "Workers" and
"Peasants" (this is well exemplified by the hammer and sickle on the Soviet flag).

It is worth noting that from 1860 till 1914, Russia made very significant progress to become a
modern state, catching up fast in the Western industrial world (large metallurgic plants in St.
Petersburg, Moscow and in the Urals, coal extraction in Ukraine, Oil drilling in Bakou, production
of cereals in the South–East, ...).
Nevertheless, the new wealth was not evenly distributed and led to widespread frustration among

Santa Clause Argument
Once the leaves begin to alter their color for the winter, most houses and businesses also change
their appearance for the winter. Many families drag out their boxes of red and green to decorate their
house for the holidays. Parents may brave a line stretching down the mall so their child can tell
Father Christmas, or Santa Claus, what he or she wishes to unwrap on Christmas morning. Some
parents question the effect of a child's health or morals associated with the belief in Santa Claus, but,
with research and psychologists weighing in on the subject, there is no tramatic evidence apparent in
letting a child have faith in Santa Claus. Evidence gathered may suggest a benefit for children.
Children should have the oportunity to believe in Santa Claus because it stems creativity and can
improve mental health, shows youth an example of giving without expecting anything in return, and
when the time comes, forces kids to distinguish between fantasy and reality. Fraser (2015) found the
the individual whose story inspired the myth Santa, also known as Saint Nicholas, originates from a

The Influence Of Nicholas I Police On Russia
Maintaining Order
The Reign of Nicholas I has been marked with war. He grew up in a time when war was the
accepted norm of
Russia. As a child he saw his brother fight against the evil, which was Napoleon. With war being
part of
Nicholas everyday life he quickly became infatuated with it. "He always remained an army man, a
junior officer at heart, devoted to his troops, to military exercises, to the parade ground, down to the
last button on a soldiers uniform (Riasanovsky, 323)" Nicholas time growing up in Russia had an

Police held Russia under a microscope, in a coup like state. Committees like the "Third Section",
and a "Statute on Censorship" also assisted Nicholas in knowing exactly what his people were doing
(Nicholas,

would merely maintain order. Even issues like serfdom, which he knew was morally wrong,
Nicholas's did not enact reform because of his fear of losing autocracy. " A single stroke of the
sovereign Emperors pen can turn serfs into free men; but no foresight can predict the consequences
of such a sudden change, and no power's will be sufficient to restore order and security amidst
general anarchy (Reader, 66)."
Nicholas I foreign affairs were run like a carbon copy of how he ran his nation. Alexander
influenced him heavily by signing what was called the Holy Alliance. "Signed on September 26,
1815, by Russia, Austria, and Prussia, and subsequently by the great majority of European powers,
the alliance simply appealed to Christian rulers to live as brothers and preserve peace in Europe

was going to police Europe. Nicholas I did not work alone when representing Russian views. Count

The Crimean War And Its Lack Of Modernization
The Crimean War was the war between Great Britain, French, and along with some other countries
against Russia. While Russia led by Nicholas I, entered to the Crimean War to defend Orthodox
Christian within the autocrat empire; French entered this war because they promoted the Catholics
Christian; Great Britain wanted to maintain the autocrat empire and maintain power (Aksakov and
Danielevsky, 378–389). It was an absolute humiliating when Russia defeated the war. The Russian
military was outplayed because the British had much more sophisticated weapons, technology, and
supply line (Riasanovsky and Steinberg, 366). Many liberal, conservative, and Russian people
believed that the defeat of Russia in the Crimean War was evidence of Russia 's economy and
material backwardness and fallen behind many European nations (lecture, 10/19). This led to the
"forces of modernization".
Defeat in the Crimean War made Russia's lack of modernization clear. The first step toward
modernization was the emancipation of serfdom. Soon after the war end Nicholas I came to end of
his life. Alexander II was on the throne and the Great Reform period of Russia began. He first issued
the emancipation manifesto in 1861. Alexander II "took steps to improve the condition of the

by Parliament on 15 June 2005 and came fully into force on 13 October 2005. The RTI Act
mandates timely response to citizen requests for government information. It applies to all States and
Union Territories of India, except the State of Jammu and Kashmir, ... Show more content on

At least, now alert citizens can slow down corrupt officers and politicians.Third, Indian politics will
hopefully mature as more information passes through the hands of political rivals, police, judiciary,
media and the people. The Act will reveal who is exploiting whom and how one can get justice for
the poor and the needy. The judiciary will now have better data to decide against the corrupt. That
sounds so far flung, doesn't it? Let us start from the district level. If the road leading to your town is
washed out in the first rains of the season, you might like to ask who was given the contract to build
that road, at what price and what the terms and conditions were. Was the contractor related to a
Member of Parliament or a member of legislative assembly in that area? During the building of that
road, did any government officer object to any deficiency or malpractice? Was there any
communication in this regard? The concerned departments will have to come up with answers in the
stipulated period.
Some panchayats are run by local goons or the community caste heads. They bully people when
someone raises questions of accounts and money spent. The Sarpanch or development officers are
rarely forthcoming. Now, all resources and their distribution will have to be transparent on paper.
The RTI Act specifies that citizens have a right to: request any information

The Rescue Of 669 Children

  • 1. The Rescue Of 669 Children Sir Nicholas George Winton was a British humanitarian who organized the rescue of 669 children, most of them Jewish, from Czechoslovakia before the World War II in an operation later known as the Czech Kindertransport (German for "children transportation"). Winton found homes for the children and arranged for their safe passage to Britain. Sir Winton was born in Hampstead, London on May 19, 1909, and was one of three children of Rudolph and Barbara Wertheim. Winton's parents were originally German Jews but converted to Christianity. They moved to London two years before Nicholas was born and changed their family name to Winton. The family was rich, the father was a merchant banker. Nicholas, his brother Bobby and sister Charlotte grew up in a big mansion in West Hampstead, London. The brothers were very good fencers – Nicholas was selected for the National British fencing team in 1938. He had hoped to compete in the next Olympics, but the games were canceled because of the war. Nicholas entered Stowe School in Buckingham and studied international banking. He worked in several banks in Europe: Behren's Bank in Hamburg, Wassermann's Bank in Berlin, and Banque Nationale de Credit in Paris. In 1931 he returned to London and became a stockbroker. Nicholas was a Royal Air Force Officer during the war. Later he worked for the Abbeyfield Society which was a charitable organization that assisted the elderly, and for different refugee organizations. Nicholas Winton was a supporting ... • 3. Redeeming Santa Claus Santa Claus, is known by many names: Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle and simply "Santa". He is a figure that has been influenced by legend, myth, folklore and most importantly for our purposes today. He wears red, is pulled around on a sleigh by a bunch of reindeer and delivers presents to good children on the 24th of December. The purpose of my post is not to argue about whether or not to teach kids about the full on mythical father Christmas; personally I think it is a bad idea to go along with our culture on this; my friend Clint Archer does a good job of dealing with this issue, click here to read it. What I hope to do in this article is see if there is anything about Father Christmas that can be redeemed. Now before you think my optimistic amillenialism has got the best of me, please read on. The portly, joyous, white–bearded, bespectacled, red coat wearing, black leather belt displaying man who carries gifts for children in a huge bad really became popular in the USA and Canda in the 19th century . Thanks to the American media machine this image has been maintained and promulgated in song, radio, TV, children's books and films. This image was further entrenched in the 20th century, especially with big corporations like Coka–Cola taking Santa on board their advertising . If we move back a few generations, some people say that the affinity Santa has for chimney comes from the pre–Christian era of Northern Europe. It is said to be believed by the Norse that ... • 5. Nicholas II And Rasputin's Role In Imperial Russia During... During World War I Nicholas II assumed supreme command of the Russian Army in September 1915. Nicholas II's personal expectation of command grew out of one of the critical weaknesses of his reign: his own incompetence as a ruler and as an individual. In addition to his naive belief that he shared a personal communion with the Russian people, he ruled over a political system that could not function without his immediate presence. This fact was not merely perceived in hindsight. When the Emperor announced his decision to his cabinet, ten of the twelve ministers of state objected and tried to convince him to reconsider. Tellingly, ministers in Imperial Russia served only at the pleasure of the tsar and had no responsibility to the Duma, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But it was the desperate inability of Russia to mobilize its industry to a war footing, at a cost of hundreds of thousands of casualties, that gutted the morale and ability of the army and ultimately broke its loyalty to the throne. Russian soldiers marched into combat in 1914–1915 blind, dismounted, and, incredibly, often unarmed. Aerial reconnaissance, so vital given the vast distances and rapid pace of operations on the Eastern Front, was nearly impossible. Cavalry could no longer perform this traditional function rapidly enough. Even though Russia had 250 airplanes at the start of the war, lack of spare parts (and frequent shootdowns by Russian troops, who believed that only Germans could use such infernal contraptions) kept most aircraft grounded and Russian commanders ... • 7. Personal Narrative : Nicholas Sparks It was an early spring Friday morning in my senior English class when I received a text from my dad: "I got us two tickets to the Nicholas Sparks movie premiere for The Lucky One tonight, and word has it that there's lots of celebrities coming to town." Of course, I was ecstatic and could hardly wait to get home from school and get ready. For my small hometown of New Bern, this was a huge deal. It only happened to be here because it's Nicholas Sparks' hometown as well. I drove home from school that day and immediately started curling my hair and putting makeup on. My dad came home around 4:30 to pick me up so we could go eat downtown at our favorite restaurant, Morgan's Tavern and Grill. After finishing, we walked down the street to the ... I told her how this video had lead me through mine, and how she taught me a lesson that I would never forget: Don't let yourself be bound in bitterness. This brought tears to her eyes, hearing from just an ordinary girl like me, how much that video means to so many teenage girls. As the night went on, the time quickly approached for the start of the movie. Of course, all the celebrities had special seating in the front of the theater and the rest of the viewers filled the rest of the room. The movie started, but nothing more than meeting Sadie was on my mind. I could've only hoped that I would run into her again and be able to talk more with her. The movie was amazing, especially since Zac Efron was in it. My friends were texting me through the whole movie in amazement after seeing my post on Instagram with Sadie. After the movie ended, there was a small after party for the celebrities and any adults that had gotten tickets to the show. With this being said, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Later it was revealed that in some secret pact signed in 1822 by Alexander, he stated that Nicholas would take upon the throne after his death. This further gave the Decembrists an opportunity to lead a revolt and they guessed that all soldiers and people too would be confused in such a situation. They decided not to swear an oath and refuse Nicholas as Tsar on December 14, 1825 and call a revolt at the same day. The Decembrists Revolt at The Senate Square The conspirators planned to gather their troops and march them to Senate Square. The Decembrist called the revolt on the morning of December14, 1825 and approximately a force of 3000 stood strong at the square, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This movement was the outgrowth of a national condition which can be traced back into eighteenth century. "Decembrism" itself was not only a short– lived revolutionary idea but it was an attitude held by at least two generations, a philosophy of political rebellion which came to climax on December 14, 1825. Though defeated, the Decembrists left an indelible impression upon Nicholas and throughout his reign, he always considered developments from a viewpoint determined by his sad memories of December 14. In spite of the fact that it failed to achieve immediate positive results, the revolt bore healthy seeds and it has been considered as the first revolutionary movement. The testimonies of the Decembrists directed the government's attention to the gravity of general condition in the state, to increasing discontent and necessity for economic improvements. The government took definite measures and reforms were also introduced. Serfdom was also abolished in 1861. Although the revolt remained a neglected and suppressed topic during Nicholas's reign but Alexander Herzen placed profiles of executed Decembrists on the cover of his periodical Polar Star. In spite of all the shortcomings of The Decembrist Revolt, this was the first ever open breach between the government and liberal elements, and it subsequently in some way helped Russia ... The story then fast–forwards to the year 1946, still in the same city, New Bern, in the deep south of the Unite States. The story ends in the modern era, today, in a nursing home called Creekside Extended Care Facility. PLOT A man named Noah Calhoun retreated back to his hometown or New Bern, North Carolina at the age of 31 from World War 2, which he was fighting in. • 13. I. T DoesnT Matter By Nicholas Carr In his 2003 article for The Harvard Business Review titled "I.T Doesn't Matter", Nicholas Carr – the Executive Editor at the time, submitted to the public his views on the utility of IT in acquiring a competitive edge (Carr N. G., 2003). Carr looks at the commonly held view that the strategic value afforded by IT as a resource increases with its effectiveness and pervasiveness; a view he sees as based on a flawed premise. He posits that a resource's value is determined by its scarcity rather than ubiquity; that having what your competitors do not puts you at an advantage. A true enough statement in any competitive marketplace, but a point easily overlooked thanks to the article's provocative title. The article was met with varied degrees ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While being the first to adopt new technology can confer an advantage, it also comes with a fair amount of risk in the event said technology requires some measure of finesse to operate with either legacy tech, or more ubiquitous tech. standardized technology offers interoperability and can actually benefit a manufacturer who has secured market shares as it allows them to influence the standards. An example of this is the incandescent light bulb which was less efficient then Tesla's fluorescent bulb but remained a standard for decades because it was more widely used. The manner in which this was achieved however, is a separate topic for discourse. This is true and not specific to IT but technology in general. Carr identifies infrastructural tech as technology that is valuable when it's shared, but can also be proprietary in some cases. In both scenarios he draws analogy to the railroad where inconsistencies in track design can result in derailment ( a strong case for the need to standardize) or where the value of the railroad came in its availability to businesses(and consumers). Carr made another analogy, comparing business adoption of IT to the electrification of North America. In the early 'rollout' stages, only those businesses within close proximity to generation plants were able to take advantage the resource. This is a clear example of an infrastructural technology as a proprietary resource. However, as electricity became more available and more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Life Of My Life LIFE It all started on December 6th, 2002. Nicholas Andrew Hulbert was born at 12:53AM at the St Providence Hospital. I was born into a world full of unknowns. "Let's name him Nicholas, since today is Saint Nicholas day!". My father yelped as my mother was holding me in the blue baby cloud blanket that I was wrapped in. Although I do not remember anything about my life before the age of 6, memories show that I had done a lot in that short span of my lifetime. When I was 3 my father Eric traveled a lot, he ran his business and had to go on a lot of business trips. My dad was a scrawny guy, but he definitely had a dad belly from all the beer and wine he drank. My mother was not the same as she is now. She definitely was a lot more healthy and fit. She went out with friends often and actually had a steady job. She had long brown luscious hair Occasionally, my mother would take off work and then we'd get to go with my father on his business trips. It wasn't very often but those were the good days, when my parents were together happily without family drama or issues and maybe the fact that they were actually together. I wonder what it would be like now if they were still together. But aside from that, when I was 4 according to my parents I was silent, and I barely did anything. I was just your average baby with soft skin and a big ass. Then around the age of 5 I started talking again and was back to normal. Not much happened in the time that I was 5, just a regular life no fun ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Essay on Nicholas I Nicholas I Nicholas I has been portrayed, and perhaps rightfully so, as a strict and reactionary tsar. Indeed, his internal policies were often repressive –– he sought to nip any liberalism in the bud, often brutally. His approach to solving problems in the Empire and keeping control was to create the "Nicholas system", a bureaucratic system defined by and completely based on absolute monarchy. Nicholas revamped govermental structure by strengthening and centralizing bureaucratic structures to an unprecedented degree. He did this as an attempt to deal with all of Russia's problems himself. At most importantly the structure known as "His Majesty's own Chancery," which was the nerve–center of the empire's administrative mechanisms. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There demands would have been politically disadvantageous to Nicholas – Poland was the one European country in his Empire. If he lost Poland, he would lose his foothold in Europe and Russia would easily be classified as simply an Asiatic empire. At first, Nicholas' attempts to squelch the rebellion were disastrous–– his general was not effective at all in battle strategy and many of his men were being killed by cholera. In fact, his brother Konstantin was killed by the same disease. Finally, after switching generals, Nicholas was able to regain Poland. However, his Polish policies made him unpopular with France and England. Public opinion was decidedly on the side of the Polish insurgents. Furthermore, Russia experienced a cholera epidemic in 1830–1, a potential cause for disorder. Nicholas retreated to his summer residence in Peterhof to avoid the plague. The populace was left in the care of an inefficient administration and started to grow restless. Rumors started going around that there was no real cholera problem, but rather people had been hired to go around poisoning food and drink. Mobs were formed and on July 3, there was serious rioting in the capital of St. Petersburg. The mobs invaded hospitals, broke the windows, threw medical supplies into the street, and attacked the doctors. After all this rioting, Nicholas returned to the capital to confront his people. Benefits Of Children Believing In Santa Claus The Christmas Debate: Benefits of Children Believing in Santa Claus Shortly after the trees appear barren after losing all their leaves, most houses and businesses also alter appearances for the season. Many families drag out boxes of red and green decorations to transform their homes for the holidays. Parents may brave the line stretching down the mall so their child can tell Father Christmas, or Santa Claus, what he or she wishes to unwrap on Christmas morning. Some question the effect on a child's health or morals associated with the belief in Santa Claus, but with research and psychologists weighing in on the subject state there is no traumatic evidence apparent in letting a child have faith in Santa Claus. Evidence gathered by these studies may suggest a benefit for youth. Children should have the opportunity to believe in Santa Claus because it enhances creativity and can improve mental health, shows young individuals an example of giving without expecting anything in return, and when the time comes, forces kids to distinguish the difference between fantasy and reality. Fraser (2015) found that the individual whose story inspired the mythical Santa, also known as Saint Nicholas, originates from a bishop living in Turkey during the third century. Nikolaos of Myra refused to worship the then Roman Emperor Diocletian, and was imprisoned until Emperor Constantine freed the Christians five years later. • 25. The Rising Of The Decembrist Russia The rising of the Decembrist Russia was due to a confusion over the next succession. In 1825, Alexander I died suddenly. Alexander 's younger brother, Constantine, who was next in line, had no desire to assume the throne of such a burdensome empire, so he gave his right of succession to his brother Nicholas. Nicholas, however, had been left unaware of the official details of the change and on learning of Alexander 's death he proclaimed Constantine emperor at St. Petersburg, at the same time as Constantine in Warsaw was proclaiming Nicholas. For nearly three weeks in December 1825 the throne remained vacant. Russian officers and troops had come into contact with currents of liberal thought, with new social conditions, and with new political institutions in western Europe during the struggle against Napoleon. Upon their return home they saw that the idea of the rights of man was regarded with contempt by their rulers, that their country by trodden under the heel of an autocracy which made all progress impossible. As they had no legitimate means making their desires known, they organised secret societies which agitated for reforms, including the establishment of a constitution. These societies, afterwards called the Decembrists, were planning a widespread uprising but, when Alexander suddenly died, resolved to take advantage of the uncertainty that existed regarding the succession to attempt a coup d 'etat. Yertle the Turtle began his life as a very happy little turtle. He was king of a nice clean pond , where everyone had plenty of warm water and enough food to eat.. Both came to a conclusion with a strong resemblance, and yet at the same time remained drastically different when their rule ended. While the names may suggest that Nicholas I was the father of Nicholas II, Nicholas I was actually Nicholas II’s great granduncle. The summarized history of their terms below will tell of and compare the Nicholas’ reigns of the Russian monarchy. Nicholas I (1796–1855) was born at Tsarskoe Selo, the third son of Czar Paul I. Nicholas’ foreign policy was directed towards the east. He increased Russian territory at the expense of Persia soon after he came to the throne. In 1828 he fought a war with Turkey and won the Eastern Shore of the Black Sea and a protectorate over Moldavia and Wallichia for Russia. With great severity he put down a revolt of the Poles in 1831 and in 1849 he sent his troops into Austria to help the emperor put an end to a rebellion of the Hungarian subjects. Nicholas hoped to drive the Turks out of Europe. As an excuse for another war he demanded a protectorate over all Christian subjects in Turkey. This demand clashed with British and French interests and brought on the Crimean War in 1853. France and Sardinia joined the Turks to help them defeat Russia’s ambitions. Nicholas died before the war ended. His oldest son, Alexander II followed him as Czar. Nicholas II (1868–1918) was born at Tsarskoe Selo, then son of Alexander III and the grandson of Alexander II. Until a question looms up... but does seeing Christmas promotions in October bother you? In truth, it didn 't bother me until I thought about it, because Christmas means Christmas and it happens every December – no surprises. • 41. Alexander II And The Russian Revolution In the 1800's Russia was facing a very difficult time. Russia's recent defeat in the Crimean war was a wake up call to the autocracy. This defeat proved to the autocracy that Russia had fallen dangerously behind their western neighbors, ultimately making it easy for other countries to attach and invade. At that point, Russia knew it was time for a change and it started with Tsar Alexander II. Alexander II took over as emperor due to his fathers (Nicholas I) death in St. Petersburg. Some say the reason for Russia's backward spiral was because of him. However, in 1855 the reign of Alexander II in Russia began and during his time he directed a period of political and social reforms. Some of the reforms Alexander II thought had to be changed included: education, military, government, and judicial. Even after trying to make multiple changes and reforms to better the government, someone was still not clicking in the Russian government. The main reason the society had so many problems dealt with the peasants. As many soviet historians have claimed, these reforms were put in place to pacify the peasantry in order to ward off revolution. During this time the peasants had to work on their lord owners land and didn't have many other options. While under the new Tsar Alexander II the government ran into a dry wall and needed a way out. The most distinguish elements he uses are symbolism, imagery, and diction. One of the elements Nicholas Sparks uses is symbolism. Sparks includes symbolism in his stories to contribute to the thought of fate. The most significant symbol in The Notebook is Noah's letters that he writes to Allie. A symbol of the secular West's religion of consumerism, Santa Claus and his twelve reindeer have hijacked the holiday dedicated to the birth of Jesus Christ, and replaced it with the gospel of spending. As both a cultural icon and the patron saint of capitalism, the depiction of Santa Claus in recent years has been seriously debated. Last year, a national debate ensued after author Aisha Harris wrote for Slate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... . . Making Santa Claus an animal rather than an old white male could spare millions of nonwhite kids the insecurity and shame that I remember from childhood. Whether you celebrate the holiday or not, Santa is one of the first iconic figures foisted upon you: He exists as an incredibly powerful image in the imaginations of children across the country (and beyond, of course). That this genial, jolly man can only be seen as white–and consequently, that a Santa of any other hue is merely a "joke" or a chance to trudge out racist stereotypes–helps perpetuate the whole "white–as–default" notion endemic to American culture (and, of course, not just American culture). Despite the surface frivolity of this argument, it highlights some deeper issues endemic in race politics in contemporary America. While the "white–as–default" notion may not strike many white Americans as particularly problematic, if they even notice it, it does make sense that children would like to see cultural images that reflect themselves, and not in ways that are merely comical or ironic. However, when Megyn Kelly at Fox news read Harris's argument, she took an entirely different stance on the preferable imagery of Santa Claus. To liberate is to set free (a group or individual) from legal, social or political restrictions. There is evidence to suggest that he disliked serfdom. Even his father, Nicholas I, believed that serfdom was an "evil palpable to all," and Alexander II was certainly even more liberally educated than his father. His arguably most fundamental reform was the emancipation of serfdom in 1861. As he said, "It is best to abolish serfdom from above than to wait until it abolishes itself from below". This meant that training was made more relaxed and corporal punishment was banned. Shorter services meant that the army was no longer seen as a 'prison life sentence'. The success of the reform was due to the efforts of Dmitri Milyutin, not Alexander II, but overall successful nonetheless. Furthermore, the success of the reform was not measured in the number of victories in battle, but the way in which it introduced a sense of professionalism and discipline in soldiers. This gave birth to modern military strategies and more effective combat tactics. In 1864, Alexander introduced a modern western–style judicial system based on the French system that was aimed to be "equal to all our subjects." The salaries of judges were also increased, making them less likely to accept bribes, thus decreasing corruption. This portrays that the children are not being given any medicine for any wounds. Dickens is trying to make the reader create a picture that makes them feel repentant for the boys. However, Dickens shows the character Mr. and Mrs. Squeers as the symbol of evil and violence in this novel. Mr. Squeers has power in the beginning of the story but through the extent of the novel he looses the power to Nicholas Nickleby and the children gain hope from Nicholas Nickleby. For example 'administering a cut with the cane'. This examines that Mr. Squeers has the power to do what ever he wishes to the children. Mr. Squeers looses his power over the children at the end for example 'beat the ruffian till he roared for mercy'. This studies how Mr. Squeers is weakened by one man. Nickleby also uses violence to gain power over Mr. Squeers Nickelby uses violence for the right reason. The character Nickleby is shown to be nice, mature and understanding. Tsar Nicholas I: Orthodoxy, Autocracy And Nationality The slogan of Tsar Nicholas I was: "Orthodoxy, Autocracy, and Nationality" (Official Nationality), suggesting that he views government as something with should be tied to Russian tradition with no room for progressivism. This slogan also suggests that he believes Orthodox Christianity and the Russian Orthodox Church should be protected and a remain a central tenet of Russian ideology, as well as believing that there should be a strong national spirit – both of which would influence faith in the Monarch and the ruling dynasty. In 1848, there were several revolutions occurring in Europe (France, Italy, Germany, Austrian Empire), which intended to overthrow the ruling monarchies and install republican governments. During 1949, Tsar Nicholas I sent in Russian troops to aid the Habsburgs in repressing uprisings and ensuring that power remained in the hands of the Habsburg dynasty. The Crimean War was significant as it showed that the Russian army, and by extension Russian power, was weak. This conflict revealed the discrepancy in industrialization between ... • 61. Nicholas II Twilight Of The Empire Summary Lieven, D. B. (1993). Nicholas II: Twilight of the Empire. New York: St. Martin's Press. The purpose of Lieven's piece is to present a new assessment of Tsar Nicholas II and his reign over Russia. The author argues that his book takes a more sympathetic interpretation towards the Russian leader than many Soviet or Western scholars do. Therefore, in his literary piece, Lieven focuses on the political and dynastic elements of Nicholas II's reign as well as the social and political contexts in which Nicholas II was living. By doing so, Lieven demonstrates that Nicholas was not solely to blame for Imperial Russia's collapse. While Lieven does believe that Nicholas II's indecisive nature paired with his feelings of insecurity did influence the later revolution, he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This revolution brought newly freed peasants into major cities and the low wages and long work hours lead to the creation of radical parties. Moreover, both before and during Nicholas II's rule there was a decrease in the amount the dynastic power that the autocracy was able to use. For instance, at the time of Nicholas II's sovereignty he was forced to sign the Manifesto of October 22, which created the DUMA, or rather the first parliamentary system in Russia. The author argues that this attempt to shift power from the autocrat to the people coupled with the limited amount of power that Nicholas II was actually able to enact as tsar only caused more turmoil during his reign. Lieven concludes his book by pointing out the similarities between Nicholas II and other rulers, including the imperial emperors of Japan and German, as well as drawing parallels between the Tsar's issues with ruling an empire to issues that were current within 1990s Russia. This allows the reader to draw further parallels and conclude that Nicholas II may not have been an inept despot, as other sources claimed, but rather he was a smart ... • 63. Book Review Of The Notebook By Nicholas Sparks I read The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, a 250 page novel published on October 1, 1996. This book can be classified as realistic fiction, but is considered to be a romance novel due to the heart pulling plot line of two star–crossed lovers. My attention was caught quickly when I saw this book, because I had watched the movie with my girlfriend which motivated me to read it. It took me about three days to read behind Mrs. Kosters desk, each day during the same week; it was a quick and easy read. This work was completely fiction; however, Sparks was inspired by his wife's beloved grandparents. They had spent over sixty years together, with their story being shared with Sparks and his wife, inspiration from their love made its way into the book. Noah comes back, after fighting in World War ll, to his home in New Bern, Carolina. Where he spends his days building a house to distract himself from remencising on a girl he fell in love with over a summer shared together. Allie, who is about to get married, stumbles upon a newspaper with Noah on it; curiousity gets the best of her and she decides to visit him. Both have been separated for fourteen years due to social class, with Allie coming from a wealthy family, and Noah who worked at a lumberyard. Reuniting brings out a tidal wave of emotions and memories that have been long locked away from both of them, with Noah being in bewilderment and saying "I still can't believe it's you. How did you find me?" (Sparks 39). Allie slowly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Love And Love In Nicholas Sparks's The Last Song "A romantic film is a love story recorded in visual media for broadcast in theaters and on TV. It focuses on passion, emotion, as well as the affectionate, romantic involvement of the main characters. It shows their journey that's genuinely strong and true along with where the pure romantic love will take them through dating" (Dictionary). Romantic films tell the story of two unlikely characters who meet and fall in love. As the films continue, the characters are torn apart, and soon come to the realization of how much they truly love each other as they search for a way to get back together. The Last Song (2010) is a film that shows the struggle of two young teens that fall in love but are split apart when tragedy hits them. On September 1, 2009, Nicholas Sparks released his fourteenth book, The Last Song which is about a young girl named Ronnie Miller, who spends the summer with her father at Wrightsville Beach, where he's been living the past few years. In the beginning of the movie, she's a rebellious seventeen–year–old girl, but soon changes her ways when she meets the boy of her dreams, Will Blakelee, who is played by Liam Hemsworth (Goodreads). According to Nicholas Sparks, he came up with the idea of his book from his past book. He's always written about the tragedy in life and love at first sight, what he hasn't done is taken that love and used it with teens around the age of seventeen. Sparks said, "Usually after those words pop into my head, I move into a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Nicholas I: Chief Guardian Of The Holy Places When examining the projection of power of each individual political leader in the nineteenth century, it is not hard to see that among the great powers only Nicholas I had the freedom to initiate any armed encounter in whatever way he desired. Although President Louis–Napoleon (or Napoleon III as he established dictatorship in 1851) had the power to do so as well, he chose to approach conflicts in a more calculated manner. This is because Napoleon III wished to establish sound relations with Britain and harness his ideology of nationalism, and this required him to be cautious when treating public opinions. (reader, Rich 104) Thus, it is in contrary to many's belief that Nicholas I was indeed a more aggressive political leader than Napoleon during the 1850s, especially throughout the Eastern Crisis. Nicholas I consistently pushed for more hostile measures especially in regards to the dispute over the Holy Places, although the conflict could be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This challenge to Russia, carefully provoked by Napoleon for the keys of the Holy Places, aroused the question of dominance over the Near East. I believe that the reason Napoleon challenged for the right to be the chief guardian of the holy places is mostly to please the Catholics who had elected him as leader in the first place. Since he himself had claimed candidly that "the question of the Holy Places and everything affecting them was of no importance whatever to France." However, it is Napoleon's calculated strategy to provoke Russia especially in Europe in hope that the tsar would take actions against the Ottoman Empire in order to achieve his primary objective: to break up the order of the European international system and the alliances. (Why Rich 20–21) Nicholas I, on the other hand, did not refrain from taking belligerent measures to establish his domination. He was determined to, once and for all, resolve the "Eastern ... How Did Industrialization And Collectivization Industrialization and Collectivization from late 19th century to 1939 Soon after Lenin's death, in 1924, the Communist Central Committee launched the first five–year plan attempting to position the new Soviet state into the club of Western developed nations. The Bolsheviks wanted first to demonstrate that the communist ideology could match the achievements of those countries and do so by uplifting the standards of living of workers and peasants. Though a true economy needs a multitude of interrelated skills and business flows to achieve efficiency, the Bolsheviks had simplified the masses into two major classes, the "Workers" and "Peasants" (this is well exemplified by the hammer and sickle on the Soviet flag). After Lenin's death, the NEP was discontinued (with the corollary of executions and deportations for the 'New Capitalists" who had dared to participate in it). It is worth noting that from 1860 till 1914, Russia made very significant progress to become a modern state, catching up fast in the Western industrial world (large metallurgic plants in St. Petersburg, Moscow and in the Urals, coal extraction in Ukraine, Oil drilling in Bakou, production of cereals in the South–East, ...). Nevertheless, the new wealth was not evenly distributed and led to widespread frustration among the population. • 71. Santa Clause Argument Once the leaves begin to alter their color for the winter, most houses and businesses also change their appearance for the winter. Many families drag out their boxes of red and green to decorate their house for the holidays. Parents may brave a line stretching down the mall so their child can tell Father Christmas, or Santa Claus, what he or she wishes to unwrap on Christmas morning. Some parents question the effect of a child's health or morals associated with the belief in Santa Claus, but, with research and psychologists weighing in on the subject, there is no tramatic evidence apparent in letting a child have faith in Santa Claus. Evidence gathered may suggest a benefit for children. Children should have the oportunity to believe in Santa Claus because it stems creativity and can improve mental health, shows youth an example of giving without expecting anything in return, and when the time comes, forces kids to distinguish between fantasy and reality. Fraser (2015) found the the individual whose story inspired the myth Santa, also known as Saint Nicholas, originates from a bishop living in Turkey in the third century. Nikoloas of Mrya refused to worship the then Roman Emperor Diocletian, and was imprisoned until Emperor Constantine freed the Christians five years later. He went on to show kindness and compassion by anonymously giving gifts to others without expecting anything in return. • 73. The Influence Of Nicholas I Police On Russia Maintaining Order The Reign of Nicholas I has been marked with war. He grew up in a time when war was the accepted norm of Russia. As a child he saw his brother fight against the evil, which was Napoleon. With war being part of Nicholas everyday life he quickly became infatuated with it. "He always remained an army man, a junior officer at heart, devoted to his troops, to military exercises, to the parade ground, down to the last button on a soldiers uniform (Riasanovsky, 323)" Nicholas time growing up in Russia had an immense influence on him. He observed strategy's like those of Prince Michael Kutuzov, and learned only with proper order can one fully achieve military dominance. Three major conflicts accurately describe how Nicholas I ... Even issues like serfdom, which he knew was morally wrong, Nicholas's did not enact reform because of his fear of losing autocracy. " A single stroke of the sovereign Emperors pen can turn serfs into free men; but no foresight can predict the consequences of such a sudden change, and no power's will be sufficient to restore order and security amidst general anarchy (Reader, 66)." • 75. The Crimean War And Its Lack Of Modernization The Crimean War was the war between Great Britain, French, and along with some other countries against Russia. While Russia led by Nicholas I, entered to the Crimean War to defend Orthodox Christian within the autocrat empire; French entered this war because they promoted the Catholics Christian; Great Britain wanted to maintain the autocrat empire and maintain power (Aksakov and Danielevsky, 378–389). It was an absolute humiliating when Russia defeated the war. The Russian military was outplayed because the British had much more sophisticated weapons, technology, and supply line (Riasanovsky and Steinberg, 366). Many liberal, conservative, and Russian people believed that the defeat of Russia in the Crimean War was evidence of Russia 's economy and material backwardness and fallen behind many European nations (lecture, 10/19). This led to the "forces of modernization". Defeat in the Crimean War made Russia's lack of modernization clear. The first step toward modernization was the emancipation of serfdom. Soon after the war end Nicholas I came to end of his life. Alexander II was on the throne and the Great Reform period of Russia began. He first issued the emancipation manifesto in 1861. Alexander II "took steps to improve the condition of the peasantry. But these steps were only partly successful, depending as they did on the goodwill and voluntary action of landlords (Cracraft, 340).
