My Life Of A New Home
My older sister Mandy met her husband Gabe when she was 14 years old. By the time Mandy was
21, she was married with two children and lived a comfortable life. In 2010, Gabe was injured at his
job and was no longer able to work. Gabe tried to find odd jobs around the neighborhood to help
supplement his disability income, but in the meantime his relationship with Mandy was falling apart.
In 2014, Mandy and Gabe decided to put their house up for sale, and move into a new home. Mandy
and Gabe looked for a new home, but could not agree on one that they could afford or one that they
both liked. Within 4 months, their house sold and Mandy and her two children (18 and 16) moved in
with our mother and Gabe moved to Philadelphia alone. Little did they know that would be the last
time that they would see Gabe.
Mandy and her children contacted Gabe every day several times a day for weeks, but never got a
response back. Gabe cleaned out everyone's bank accounts and took all of the profit from the sale of
the home. Mandy and her children were left with maxed out credit cards, no health insurance, two
car and insurance payments, 3 storage units that she could not afford, and many unpaid bills. Mandy
and Gabe's oldest son was in his first year of community college, and since Gabe emptied out his
account leaving him no way to pay for a second semester. As the oldest sister in our family, Mandy
was always the strong one, the backbone of our family, however this situation broke her in

Train Dreams Summary
In the fictional story "Train Dreams," Denis Johnson has us follow the main character, Robert
Grainier, through his best and worst times of his life. Grainier is part of a family of three, him, his
wife, and daughter. With the death of his wife and daughter, he tries to come to terms with these
deaths and creates a new life for himself. Johnson creates a theme of death and rebirth because that
is how life goes on. Everything must die, nothing can last forever. With death around things and
people, they must be "reborn" to survive.
When Grainier meet his wife, Gladys, it was like love at first sight for him. He met Gladys during a
Methodists church seminar. She was sitting across from him and singing softly. After the seminar
the two of them talked so easily to each other and then started to hangout more and more. Right after
their first kiss together he said, "Would you care to be my wife, Gladys?" In return Gladys said,
"Yes, Bob, I believe I would like it" (39). They had built a cabin in the Moyea Valley and had a
daughter. With Grainier working as a choker, which loops up the spruces with a cable to be hauled
out by the horses, pulled further and further away from home. In the summer of 1920 he came back
from a job and discovered the whole Moyea Valley on fire.
With the Moyea Valley on fire he searched the folks in the neighboring town to see if his family was
there or if anybody knew where they were. Nobody had word on his family so he decided to walk

Paul's New Life
"I tried to lighten the mood." We've all been at this stage where we know that we made a choice that
affected someone else's life. In Tangerine, Paul Fisher's life is affected by many events that occur.
First, Paul moves, then he gets kicked off his soccer team, and then he finds out that he is lied to all
his life for how his bad eyesight came to be. Decisions made by various characters had
consequences that impacted Paul. Paul's father made the choice of moving him and his family to
Tangerine Florida, because he got a new job offer and wanted to take it. Paul was excited for his
fresh start at a new school with a new name other than "Mars." Moving to a new school was great
for Paul at first, but then everything went downhill from the time he walked through the doors of
Lake Windsor Middle School. Paul was told that his classes were outside in portable classrooms,
while the sixth graders would be inside with regular classrooms to be in. At the end of the day,
everything got worse. Paul faces another complication at Lake Windsor Middle School. ... Show

his eyesight. Due to Paul's IEP, he had to be escorted around the school by a guardian and sat in

Character Analysis Of Mrs. Mallard
Mrs. Mallard: Not the Typical Woman
We are introduced to Kate Chopin's Story of an Hour, in which the central character, Mrs. Mallard,
receives false news of her husband's passing due to a tragic train accident. Mallard represents the
many unprivileged women of her time, bound to a marriage they may or may not be happy with.
Mallard's character is reflected through her peculiar response to the appalling message, as it was not
what one the reader would expect from a woman of Mallard's era. This aspect reveals that not
everything in her life was ideal. Therefore, Chopin must set this character free from the shackles that
chain her to a life in an unhappy marriage and dependency of a housewife on her husband for
everything, by killing her. Chopin could argue that no other solution was accessible for Mrs.
Mallard. She ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mallard to the news of her husband's death often left readers puzzled as to why she did not break
down into a hysterical crying fit, as expected of a woman who just learned her husband will not be
coming home to her. Chopin's distinctive claim describes Mallard's initial response in a clear, sharp,
manner: "She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability
to accept its significance."(Chopin 395) Chopin illustrates the idea that Mrs. Mallard was not
paralyzed by the death of her significant other. Rather she accepted it, which strays her persona
away from that of many women who have been in that exact situation. She displays a sign of grief
when the news is freshly given, but as Mallard comes to the realization of a life without the
mandatory input or association of her husband, she eases up and descends to her room and sits in the
armchair facing an open window. She begins to fantasize about life beyond the house in which she
has been trapped for so long, unable to live a life without having her decisions made for her. With
her husband out of the picture, she can finally build a life of her

The Journey To A New Life : A Journey To A New Life
The Journey to a New Life It was dreadfully hot in Winchester, Virginia that day. Sweat bled down
the brown face of Abigail Shaw as she picked through the cotton that seemed to go on for miles. The
girl's hair was matted and her filthy dress barely squeezed onto her skin and bones. She dreamed of
a life. A life full of freedom. Though she had never experienced one and neither had the rest of her
family. Abigail's bereaving mother sat devastated in the fields knowing she would never see her
baby girl again. Just yesterday, Lucy was sold off like cattle being sold in an auction. Abigail winced
at the thought, afraid that she may be next. That night at the Plantation was just like usual. The
Middleton family sat around their lavish dining room scarfing down their dinner making sure not to
leave a crumb for one other person. Abigails stomach grumbled as she walked out to the shack–
where her family slept–with her normal, cornmeal and peas to share with the rest of her family, that
was supposed to last them for the next few days. As Abigail walked into the disarrayed barn with
their food rations, Charles and Mary's faces were full of despair because of the absence of their
daughter, Lucy. She always was full of life and was what still gave them hope. Abigail knew her
parents wouldn't stop fossicking until the day they died. They all just sat in silence and didn't talk
until George came in with wounds all over him, finally breaking the silence. "What happened to
you?" Charles

My New Life
Chapter 1 "The First Day Of The Rest Of My New Life" While walking to my new school with my
backpack on a Wednesday, a year after my father's death today was not a happy day. A year after my
father past away in the most horrific event I have ever experienced. I saw him lying down in the
streets outside by house as cold as hell with his guts spilled all over the street. The cause of his death
was not explained and I have not been the same person since. No doubt losing my dad was as hard
as losing my own guts. We got along well and having that string blown apart can really make a
person go dark. As soon as I am a block away, I see a mysterious man from a distance at his house.
He wore a black business ledger jacket along with a blue tie and he smiled in a very strange way. He
then says "your father is not really dead boy, you only wish"? That statement sent a jolt of
frustration down my throat. A random man telling me that my father is not really dead and that you
only wish. I then started walking towards the man and the man then says I will see you around Rajan
and goes inside his house while I pick up my speed and start running towards the door and said in a
heat of anger, get over here you son of a bitch. At the door, I thought to knock and see if the man
would open his door. After knocking and then not getting a response, I kick open the door and see
that nobody was there. I heard nothing in this house. It was as if no one ever stepped foot in this

Buying A House New Goals
By nature, humans are always looking for new challenges and mountains to climb. Buying a house
for the first or second time, moving into a new job or position, moving from one neighborhood to
another, as example can all be part of new goals to pursue.
Now it is a good time to think what is next. It should mean planning a new moving experience or, on
the contrary, deciding to stay in the new place for a long time, getting married or divorced, growing
the family, getting into a new professional field, starting a business, joining a sport club, buying a
house or a car, and so on.
Return or Stay
Even though the transition to the new life is finished, return or stay are always a big and permanent
question in the mind of immigrants. This idealistic idea remain even after realizing that the new
place, now called home, is much better and offers more opportunities for the family. This analysis is
sometimes necessary to clarify or re–estate new goals. Returning home after certain number of
years, staying for extended periods or moving to a different city or country can be also a decision
made by the employer. Evaluation of advantages or disadvantages, before deciding to move again in
any situation, must take in account current the job position, income, costs of relocating, and
personal, family and professional goals.
New Permits or Immigration Status
Some countries extend work or other temporary permits several times. It is important to keep in
mind expiry dates and prepare and

A Guide Through Life : Losing A Guide Through Life
Losing a Guide Through Life
What is the most important sense. Taste, touch, hearing? It's sight. Sight can guide you through life,
seeing people, seeing where you're going, what you're eating, anything you do will use sight. But
there's another side of sight that we don't use as much. Seeing the emotion in a person, seeing the
beauty in something. Sight can have two roads, it's literal sense, and the deeper more emotional and
spiritual sense. And in Emily Dickinson's two poems, "Before I got my eyes put out" and "We grow
accustomed to the dark" she expresses her experience of losing her sight not just in a literal way but
in that deeper more spiritual way because she is accepting the loss of her sight, she is adjusting to
the new life of darkness and they tie together that lien of emotion to show her coping with her loss
of sight of the world.
In Dickinson's poem "Before I get my eyes put out", the speaker of the poem that we for now will
assume is Dickinson herself is experiencing losing the sight of the world and the beauty she saw in
it. She talks about how she is living with her losing the sight but she would take seeing so much of
the world that she loved in a heartbeat. This can be seen in the poem where Dickinson say " But
were it told to me, Today/ That I might have the sky/ For mine, I tell you that my heart/ Would split,
for the size of me" (Dickinson, 336) In these lines, the speaker expresses the love she would have to
hear that she could see the sky for

A New Life : A Story Of A New Life
A New Life I shot up from my bed soaked in ice cold water. I looked to my left and and I saw Malik
holding a bucket in his hands. He ran out my room as fast as he could, so I couldn't catch up to him
because he knew what was going to happen if I actually did.
I went back into my room to get ready for the day. When I looked in the window it was dark and
gloomy as if it was going to storm, but that was strange. The forecast predicted that today would be
and sunny day, but I didn't think much of it. When I finished getting ready, I ran downstairs to eat
breakfast.
"Oh, Marika can you please take Malik to school today? I have an early meeting to go to, and I
won't be able to take him." Mom asked.
I nodded while stuffing my mouth with pancakes. After she thanked me, she left to go to her
meeting.
"Did you see the sky today?" Malik asked
"Yeah, it was supposed to be the perfect day for swimming." I answered. "It's alright we can
reschedule."
We were walking to the car, but I felt this strange feeling, like something was going to happen. I
brushed it off and continued walking to the car. "Can I drive?" Malik asked. "No." I answered.
"Please!" "No." "Come on!" He pleaded, "I have my permit." "Fine... but don't try anything crazy," I
told him. On our way to school, we drove past The Wall. I stared at it while Malik continued to
drive. I think about what's behind the tall, white wall. Maybe there's more people out there living a
completely different life from us, or maybe

A New Life : The Experience Of A New Life
A New Life I was a prisoner in my own body, captive inside my own skin, unable to break free. At
the age of seventeen years old, I weighed over 255 pounds. I was unable to participate in ordinary
activities due to the own restraints I had placed upon myself. I always felt alone in the crowd; I was
self–conscious and felt as if the world always had a judgmental eye looking down on me. Food was
my addiction, calories my drug. I was eating through my pain and depression. Food gave me a sense
of safety and security unlike anything else. I was trapped, desperate for freedom. Until I decided to
make a change; I decided that I was not going to be trapped any longer! I vowed to set myself free.
On a cold, January morning a small group of my close friends from church met to kick off a new
fundraiser. We had just opened a new food pantry, The Table, and were in desperate need of the
finances to keep it running. A sweet elderly lady from our congregation, Mrs. Thelma, had provided
us with the ideal and inspiration to host a weightless competition, which later received the name,
"Choose to Lose to Make the Table Able". The objective of the fundraiser was to obtain sponsors
whom would pay a dollar for every pound lost. My sponsors were unaware of the astronomical
financial burden that I would place upon them. Being the overweight, food addicted teenager that I
was, this competition was just what I needed to turn my life around. The very next day I began my

Mrs Mallard's Experience of Freedom in The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin
In "The Story of an Hour", Mrs Mallard, who has a heart attack is the main protagonist. Like any
ordinary women, she is a normal housewife who depends on her husband. The news of her
husband's death gives her freedom and sets her free from restraints, marriage and a lifetime of
dependency.
Kate Chopin uses several techniques to create the image of how freedom affects Mrs Mallard. At
first, Mrs Mallard is shocked by the news which is shown in
"She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister's arms." and
"When the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone."
These ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She also uses "dull stare " and "not a glance of reflection" to show that Mrs Mallard is very confused
and blanked. These construct a vexed and completely inanimate atmosphere which is also uttered in
"a suspension of intelligent thought". This suggests that she is feeling puzzled and stupefied.
Although Mrs Mallard is shocked, she actually feels happy at the news. It is shown in
"Facing the open window, a comfortable, roomy armchair" and
"She could see in the open square before her house the tops of the trees were all aquiver with the
new spring life."
These reflect that Mrs Mallard's new world is widened and burst with vitality. Words like "open
window", "comfortable, roomy armchair" and "open square" repeat the impression of "openness"
which creates a spreading image. "New spring life" symbolises vigour and "delicious breath of rain
was in the air" symbolised freshness which reflect that the new life is brand new and worth
rejoicing. These build up a lusty mood to describe freedom is spreading and filling Mrs Mallard's
life with spirits. In the meantime, Chopin uses "crying his wares", "distant song which some one
was singing..." and "countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves" to display the new kind of life
is spacious and free in which people can cry and sing loud that even a note from the distance can be
heard.

Introduction:
The debate about the relative merits of exploring space with humans and robots is as old as the
space program itself. There are some arguments that are advanced in any discussion about the utility
of space exploration and the roles of humans and robots. Those arguments in roughly ascending
order of advocate support are the following:
1. Space exploration will eventually allow humans to establish a human civilization on another
world as a hedge against the type of catastrophe that wiped out the dinosaurs.
2. Human explores space and creates important new technologies to advance the economy. It is true
that for every dollar spend on the space program; the economy receives about eight dollars of
economic benefit. Space exploration serves as a stimulus for children to enter the fields of science
and engineering.
3. Space exploration in an international context offers a peaceful cooperative venue that is a
valuable alternative to nation state hostilities. One can look at the International Space Station and
marvel that the former Soviet Union and the United States of America are now active partners.
International cooperation is also a way to reduce costs.
4. Exploration of space will provide humanity with an answer to the most fundamental questions:
Are we alone? Are there other forms of life beside those on Earth?

Freedom In Kate Chopin's The Story Of An Hour
In "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin a woman just received the news that her beloved husband
had died. The story was written in 1894, a time when women did not have many rights. When the
young wife, Mrs. Mallard, gets the news that her husband had died she is immediately overcome by
grief. However, she later realizes that this is actually her first taste of freedom in her life. Chopin
uses her short story to explore women's lack of rights at this time.
After retiring to her room, Mrs. Mallard falls into a sense of numbness brought on by grief over her
husband's death. She stares out the window with so many thoughts going through her mind. She was
in such disbelief in the news she had received. However, she gradually begins to feel another
feeling, and suddenly, "she said [it] over and over under her breath: "free, free, free!"(Chopin 1)."
Mrs. Mallard has realized that despite the tragedy of her husband's death, she was now free. The
newfound freedom was a whole new lite to Mrs. Mallard. Chopin further explores this feeling that
has come over
Mrs. Mallard when she writes, "there would be no one to live for during those coming years; she
would live for herself (Chopin 1)." No longer does Mrs. Mallard need to live her life tending to her
husband's needs and wants. He had supported her and provided for her but in return, she had
probably done all the household chores and cared for him.
She was tired of living for him and not for herself. But for her first time, she was free to devote all
of her attention to taking care of herself and to do what she wanted to do.
In spite of this sense of freedom, Chopin still points out the devotion between
Mr. and Mrs. Mallard. While exploring a deeper question, can Mrs. Mallard really love him when
she is his property? Chopin writes that Mrs. Mallard did not immediately embrace her sense of
freedom as happiness, as "she knew that she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands
folded in death; the face that had never looked save with love upon her, fixed and gray and dead
(Chopin 1)." Mrs. Mallard knew that her husband had loved her and for that reason, she could not
feel happy because of his death. Yet she admits to being free of the "powerful will

Essay about The Big Move to College
The Big Move to College
Moving away from home has been one of the biggest challenges that I have had to face so far in the
eighteen years of my life. Moving from my home town to the collge dorm was a difficult transition
that was necessary for growing up both mentally and physically as an individual. The little more
than five hundred miles that separates me from my friends and family has allowed me to become the
person I am today, and the distance allows me to grow and become more familiar with things that
are a whole new experience for me. One of the many new things that I have had to deal with was
making new friends in my environment.
As I drove away from my house on the morning of August 20th 2005, not only was I saying ... Show

Although I hated to see her go, I knew that I would never branch out and meet new people with my
mother present. As we said goodbye, the tears swelled up in her eyes and it seemed like the harder
she tried to prevent the tears from falling; the faster they streamed down her cheek. Eventually my
mom got back into her car and began the long trip home. There I was, alone in the middle of the
street outside of my dorm. I walked back into Cowden, up the flight of stairs and into my dorm
room in a trance.
For the next few days, I was alone in my room until my roommate, Emily, one of my closest friends
from high school arrived. Until Emily arrived, I kept the door to our room shut and barely went out
into the hall. I felt as though I was alone in the world until Emily called my cell phone and informed
me she was here. I ran down and helped her bring all of her belongings up the stairs and I was
relieved that she was here with me. I finally was not alone in this world. We had been told numerous
times that rooming together would be a bad idea because we would hang out only with each other,
and we would not meet anyone new at school. For the first few days Emily was there, we didn't talk
to anyone else and I began to think that the warnings we had received were going to be true.
Everything changed when we left our door open for an hour around dinnertime.
Two people walked up and down the hall asking everyone if they wanted to go to

Essay On Coming To America
There are many significant parts of my life that have had a huge impact on my personality, but there
is one that has not only affected me, but has changed me for the better. My personal life changing
experience was coming to America. For me, this bridge between my old life and new life is a shaky
bridge that I attempted to cross and entered a whole new realm of life which changed everything.
The decision about coming to America has taught me how to respect other people, be more
responsible, and be more loving towards various friends and families. It has also helped me adapt to
the new life that I'm about to begin. It was so unexpected. Out of nowhere my parents broke the

The decision to become a doctor and study really hard for it took a while to get used to, but I finally
did it. I decided that it was also time to draw a closer relationship with God. Baptized at the age of
twelve, my vision on the world became clearer and that's when I understood why things happened
the way they did – why I came to America, why I met certain people, and why it happened at that
time. All these questions were finally answered by God, who spoke through other people at school,
church and even my home. I finally understood why the Indian people living in Greenwood helped
us the way they did; they put themselves in our shoes and realized that they had gone through the
same experience. From these experiences, God has helped me understand the importance of these
small parts of life that I didn't use to think about before. The big change finally made sense! It all
happened for a reason – a reason that has impacted me for the rest of my life. The transition to my
new life has changed the way I think about myself, act toward other people, and understand God's
will for my life. The decision to come to America was a decision that we will never regret making. –

New York Was The Hub For A New Life
Imagine that a twelve year old coming home for a twelve hour work day of working with dangerous
machinery and having to give your earnings to their parents so that they can help the rest of their
family just merely get by that week. By the 1900s, ten to fifteen year olds made up one–fifth of the
working population; some of these kids did not even have a family but they were working so that
they could stay off of the street. Likewise, immigrants saw working in sweatshops as a way to keep
their family from living a homeless lifestyle. New York was the hub for the first sweatshops in
America, "Sweatshops first arose in American cities–most notably in New York City– during the
nineteenth century and were made possible by the large number of impoverished immigrants willing
to endure poor working conditions for low wages" (Tuerk). Immigrants coming to the new world
saw many opportunities in sweatshops for a step into a new life, but they found themselves in a trap
of fifteen hour work days with hardly any breaks and atrocious working conditions. Many children
and immigrants saw working in sweatshops as a way out of their impoverished life and a step into a
new life, but these people were sadly mistaken. Many of them became diseased and even died from
their over worked bodies and close proximity to one another in the work place. Sweatshops and
child labor are an exploitation of human resources and should be abolished; they both started
because of an increase in children without

Essay on Kate Chopin
Kate Chopin
"The Story of an Hour"
The story "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin, written in 1894, is about a woman gaining
independence and experiencing a new freedom, due to the death of her husband. The topic of the
story was rather scandalous at the end of the 19th century. Women had no control over their property
and weren't allowed to request a divorce.
Luise Mallard is a young wife (p.78, 3rd paragraph). She immediately feels grief and starts to cry
when Richards gives her the news about the death of her husband. But directly after her outburst, the
reader can already make out signs about how her feelings will change. In the story are several
symbols, showing the approaching of a new life. Through the open window Mrs. ... Show more

That doesn't mean that she didn't lover her husband, she loved him "sometimes" (p. 78, last
paragraph). And she knows that she has to cry again when she'll see him dead at his funeral. But this
grief won't hold her back to enjoy the new life that lies ahead of her. She looks forward to the
coming years (p. 78, 6th paragraph, end), she even hopes that she will have a long life, so that she
can fully enjoy her freedom (p. 79, 3rd paragraph, end).
But Mrs. Mallard will never lead such al life because her husband is not dead. When he comes
through the door, directly after she realized what a life without her husband means to her, she is
shocked. She dies because of her heart trouble, already mentioned at the beginning of the story
(p.77, first sentence) and therefore foreshadowing what could happen in the end.
The question is, what reason made her heart fail? The doctor says it was "joy that kills" (p. 79, last
sentence) and because of this last statement irony is created. The reader knows more than the
characters do because of the change of perspective when Mrs. Mallard goes up to her room. The
narrator changes from an authorial narrator to a personal narrator and the reader gets a detailed
description of her feelings. This mind–style enables us to suspect what the sudden appearance of Mr.
Mallard could mean for Luise. It was certainly not joy that Brently Mallard is still alive that killed
her. It was rather

The Story Of An Hour Critical Analysis Essay
The Story of an hour written by Kate Chopin is the best short–story because theme, characters, point
of view, and style show the attitude that some women felt or may feel regarding marriage being
repressive in their life and a longing for freedom. The story opens with Mrs. Mallard's sister
Josephine informing her that her husband has been killed. Because of Mrs. Mallard's heart condition
Josephine and Richards, who is a friend of the family and there to help deliver the news, are
concerned with how the news will affect Mrs. Mallard. When Mrs. Mallard hears the news to is over
taken with grief and locks herself in her room. While in her room she imagines herself in her new
life that is no longer bogged down by her duties as a wife. When ... Show more content on

While Mrs. Mallard remembers Mr. Mallard as a kind and tender man who loved her, she also
viewed him as the oppression that marriage put upon women and men. While Mr. Mallard was kind
and loving to his wife, he was also controlling and overbearing. Josephine, Mrs. Mallard's sister and
Richards, Mr. Mallard's friend is there to break the news of Mr. Mallard's death. Richards has
learned of Mr. Mallard's death at the newspaper office, not wanting to believe the information that
was received, Richards waited for the new to be delivered for a second time before enlisting the help
of Josephine. They are both there to support Mrs. Mallard and their support shows that they care for
Mr. and Mrs. Mallard.
While there is much of a setting in this story because the story takes place in just one hour the
actions within the story take place in the Mallard home. The home appears to be more than one
floor, the doors have locks, and there is comfortable furniture within the home. It also seems to
appear that the women are for the most part at home and the men are off working on the railroad.
The setting of the story keeps in line with the theme of the longing for being free of a repressive
marriage.
The Story of an Hour was written in 1894 and during this time women still did not have the right to
vote. It makes sense that women would have the feeling of being repressed and oppressed by men
and within their marriages.

Analysis Of Pygmalion And Stoppard 's Arcadia
Although all education is interrelated and can improve one's quality of life, it is up to him or her to
utilize the knowledge to improve their life in both Shaw's "Pygmalion" and Stoppard's "Arcadia,"
but differs in the motive seeking education, where one is to improve one's social class and life and
another is due to curiosity and fascination, respectively. In both texts, knowledge and education
advanced the character's life quality to a certain limit. In "Pygmalion," Eliza, a girl with no manners
who seemingly lives on the streets seeks education in the means of language and manners in order to
sell flowers at a flower shop. In "Arcadia," Thomasina, on the other hand, seeks education in the
pursuit of curiosity. Both texts depict knowledge as a passageway for a better life but then show that
it is how one utilizes the education and knowledge that determines one's quality and satisfaction
with life.
Education in "Pygmalion" is depicted as a stepping stone into a better life, but it is how one puts
one's knowledge to use that determines their satisfaction with life. The main message of
"Pygmalion" is appearances can be deceiving. Higgins, a high middle class man who studies
phonetics––the science of speech–– with a proper education, conveys a persona of being cold, stern,
proper, conventional, and intellectual. Eliza, on the other hand, grew up on the streets, which
resulted in her hideous accent. She was "...not at all an attractive person...[She] wears a... hat...

Personhood In The False Princess
Who are you? More importantly, who would you like to be seen as to everyone else? Some may say
they want to be an astronaut, or a photographer, or a successful business person. Unfortunately,
wanting to be something and actually being something are two very different things according to
Western Michigan University professor Ilana Nash. She claims "A woman's personhood can exist
fully only in a society that support it ... unless her society shares that view, she will not enjoy real
freedom" (Nash 45). Personhood is an idea that is prevalent in every form of storytelling and what
better story to analyze with this idea that Eilis O'Neal's "The False Princess"? This novel literally
opens with the protagonist having her identity taken from her. Using Nash's ideals about what it
takes to possess personhood I will explain how Sinda, The False Princess, takes the personhood that
was stolen from her, obtains the respect from others, and maintains her place in the new life she is
thrust into. ""Sinda," I whispered. I waited for the word to have some meaning, to fill the
empti[ness] ... But the name just faded away, filling nothing, lost" (O'Neal 16). Once a mighty
princess, now a lowly nobody; This excerpt is the first time the protagonist, newly named Sinda,
comes to terms with the fact that her identity has been permanently stripped from her. This is not
simply a loss of her personhood, but a loss of her very being for 16 years. Sinda has been reshaped
and cast out in a matter of minutes and she doesn't complain once during the process. Perhaps it all
happened so fast or perhaps there is a sense of complete loss and lack of willpower in a
circumstance like this, but what is clear is that there would be no coming back from something like
this for Sinda. At this point in the story it is looking utterly hopeless in terms of Sinda's possession
of an identity and more importantly a personhood. However, as Sinda begins to come to terms with
her new life she is awakened to the power she posses literally and figuratively. Sinda overhears a
disrespectful conversation concerning her and she erupts with emotion causing a vine she was
gripping onto to crumble into ash. This is the first time Sinda begins to differentiate herself

My New Life Essay
As I peered through my front window, I began to ponder what my new life would be like in Texas. I
envisioned cowboys, bulls and tumbleweeds, expecting the entirety of the state to be set like a
western. My Dad was rummaging throughout the house looking for anything that we might require
on our three day drive to Houston. We were leaving prior to my mother and sister because my father
needed to start his new job soon and there was still much to be packed. As we loaded the last
essential items into the car, I got one last look at our small house in New Jersey and couldn't help
but feel anxious. I wasn't accustomed to change, but little did I know, change would soon become a
prominent part of my life and ultimately shape me as a person. Our first year in Houston we stayed
with some of my mom's family friends until we found a suitable house. I began attendance at Boone

A life without Freedom in Kate Chopin´s The Story of an...
Kate Chopin's short story titled "The Story of an Hour" shows us in a number ways that life without
freedom is no life at all. In the story, a nineteenth century women named Mrs. Mallard finds out
about her husband's death. She has heart disease so Josephine, Mrs. Mallard's sister, tries to break
the bad news to her as calmly as possible. After hearing the news, Mrs. Mallard's unpredictable
reaction shocks us the readers as well as the characters in the story. Instead of feeling the sorrow of
her husband's death, she feels the joy of freedom from him as well. Freedom is something that we as
humans take for granted, and this story shows the importance of it through Mrs. Mallard's eyes.
What is freedom? Is it being able to say ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"There stood, facing the open window, a comfortable, roomy armchair. Into this she sank, pressed
down by a physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach into her soul" (Chopin
443). This quote, again, depicts how Mrs. Mallard had little to no freedom. The open window in this
sentence represents the new life she has in front of her that is refreshed and cleaned. All she needs to
do is get rid of the weight that is holding her back, which, in this case, is the sorrow and sadness she
is feeling over her husbands death. Once she realizes this, she gets up and looks out at her new life
with excitement that is uncontrolled.
We see in Mrs. Mallard's eyes the true meaning of what it is to be free, and that it should not be
disregarded. It takes Mrs. Mallard very little time to realize what it feels like to be finally free. She
had never felt it before, as most women had not at the time. She did not know how to react. Once
she realizes the true gift in everything that has happened and that she is now free, she rises up out of
the chair, looks out the window at her new life and says, "Free, free, free!" (Chopin 443). This quote
is important because they are the only words Mrs. Mallard speaks in the story. The fact that free is
the only word she says in the story, shows that she finally understands the true meaning of freedom,
which further solidifies my claim. It is because of these words we, as the audience, believe

This can be seen in the poem where Dickinson say " But
were it told to me, Today/ That I might have the sky/ For mine, I tell you that my heart/ Would split,
for the size of me" (Dickinson, 336) In these lines, the speaker expresses the love she would have to
hear that she could see the sky

Analysis Of The Book ' The Luck Of Roaring Camp '
In "The Luck of Roaring Camp" by Bret Harte, nature is seemingly created into its own character.
Nature has the haunting role of being the giver and taker of life in this story. The forces of nature
bring the men of the camp the blessing of a small child. Through this child the men are given life
and see the beauty of nature around them. However, nature will ultimately strip the men of both of
these things. Harte shows us that nature is the culprit that brings both beauty and pain. The first
mention of nature occurs at the beginning of the story, at the description of Cherokee Sal's situation.
Harte alludes to the effects of the very first transgression of mankind. He writes that Cherokee Sal
had been suffering from the "primal curse". After the fall into sin, women would be cursed by
unbearable pain in childbirth. Nature carries out its justice on women, by taking a beautiful event
and making it into a dreadful one. Nature plays the role of divine prosecutor on earth and Sal's final
judgement has come. Her life is taken by this cruel curse of nature. However nature plays two roles
in the event of childbirth. What makes the pain of childbirth worth it, is the miracle of a new life that
is brought into the world. Nature has delivered a new blessing into the lives of the men of Roaring
Camp. It has come in the form of a baby boy. By the birth of Luck nature has simultaneously, given
and taken life. Nature has evened out its score, it took something away, but in return it gave

Egyptians and New Life Essay
"The Story of Sinuhe" is about an Egyptian man named Sinuhe, who is the queen's secretary. In
ancient times, castration was required in order for men to enter the royal palace and to serve the
royalty. At the end of the story, the story revealed that Sinuhe was not castrated because he has
children. This showed that the king really trusted Sinuhe because all servants needed to be castrated
except him. Throughout the story, the author stressed the idea that loyalty is essential because people
were expected to be loyal to their own country and want to stay there until their death. Thus,
nationalism plays a huge role in Egypt. After facing many hardships, Sinuhe was forced to leave his
home country, Egypt. Therefore, he lived a new life ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Egyptians die, their bodies are carried to their own pyramid. Egyptians prepared for the "end"
of life because they believed in life after death. In deciding to leave his new homeland and return to
his home country, Sinuhe had to make a difficult decision: one that involves leaving behind people
he has come to love, his own family. This definitely emphasized national propaganda to the
audiences because in reality who would really leave family behind. While one might argue that
Sinuhe did not have absolute love for his country because he would have run away in the first place,
his return after many years of a new life with new loved ones should be justification enough. A
prevalent theme of this story is not only that people have love for their country, but also are
emotionally connected to it and, in so being, can remain loyal throughout the span of their lives. In
addition, "The Story of Sinuhe" portrayed the life of an immigrant living in a foreign country. In the
story, Sinuhe described his journey to Asia as an immigrant. Many immigrants left their homeland
and traveled to other places, which were unfamiliar to them, because they wanted better lives for
their family and for future generations. In certain situations, some were even forced to leave their

immigrant has many affects on their lives. However, this label and the obstacles that come with it
didn't stop each character from pushing forward. In the story "The Trip", Murad is faced with many
obstacles throughout his journey to a different country. Murad has to pay a large amount of money
to be an overcrowded boat, just to be told he has to jump off halfway to the destination and swim
there. After having to take an unexpected swim in very cold water, "He takes a few steps and drops
to his knees on the sand, which feels warmer than the water. With a trembling hand, he opens a side–
pocket of his cargos and extracts a plastic bag" (Lalami 52). Murad was tired after swimming a great
distance in cold water, but with his last bits of energy he pushed himself to make the phone call he
needed to complete. Another obstacle he faces includes getting arrested and having to return home.

Grainier is part of a family of three, him, his wife, and daughter. With the death of his wife and daughter, he tries to come to terms with these deaths and creates a new life for himself. Johnson creates a theme of death and rebirth because that is how life goes on. Everything must die, nothing can last forever. With death around things and people, they must be "reborn" to survive. After the seminar the two of them talked so easily to each other and then started to hangout more and more. Right after their first kiss together he said, "Would you care to be my wife, Gladys?" • 11. Character Analysis Of Mrs. Mallard Mrs. Mallard: Not the Typical Woman We are introduced to Kate Chopin's Story of an Hour, in which the central character, Mrs. Mallard, receives false news of her husband's passing due to a tragic train accident. Mallard represents the many unprivileged women of her time, bound to a marriage they may or may not be happy with. Mallard's character is reflected through her peculiar response to the appalling message, as it was not what one the reader would expect from a woman of Mallard's era. This aspect reveals that not everything in her life was ideal. Therefore, Chopin must set this character free from the shackles that chain her to a life in an unhappy marriage and dependency of a housewife on her husband for everything, by killing her. Chopin could argue that no other solution was accessible for Mrs. Mallard. She ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mallard to the news of her husband's death often left readers puzzled as to why she did not break down into a hysterical crying fit, as expected of a woman who just learned her husband will not be coming home to her. Chopin's distinctive claim describes Mallard's initial response in a clear, sharp, manner: "She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance."(Chopin 395) Chopin illustrates the idea that Mrs. Mallard was not paralyzed by the death of her significant other. Rather she accepted it, which strays her persona away from that of many women who have been in that exact situation. She displays a sign of grief when the news is freshly given, but as Mallard comes to the realization of a life without the mandatory input or association of her husband, she eases up and descends to her room and sits in the armchair facing an open window. She begins to fantasize about life beyond the house in which she has been trapped for so long, unable to live a life without having her decisions made for her. • 13. The Journey To A New Life : A Journey To A New Life The Journey to a New Life It was dreadfully hot in Winchester, Virginia that day. Sweat bled down the brown face of Abigail Shaw as she picked through the cotton that seemed to go on for miles. The girl's hair was matted and her filthy dress barely squeezed onto her skin and bones. She dreamed of a life. A life full of freedom. Though she had never experienced one and neither had the rest of her family. Abigail's bereaving mother sat devastated in the fields knowing she would never see her baby girl again. Just yesterday, Lucy was sold off like cattle being sold in an auction. Abigail winced at the thought, afraid that she may be next. That night at the Plantation was just like usual. The Middleton family sat around their lavish dining room scarfing down their dinner making sure not to leave a crumb for one other person. Abigails stomach grumbled as she walked out to the shack– where her family slept–with her normal, cornmeal and peas to share with the rest of her family, that was supposed to last them for the next few days. As Abigail walked into the disarrayed barn with their food rations, Charles and Mary's faces were full of despair because of the absence of their daughter, Lucy. She always was full of life and was what still gave them hope. Abigail knew her parents wouldn't stop fossicking until the day they died. They all just sat in silence and didn't talk until George came in with wounds all over him, finally breaking the silence. "What happened to you?" Charles ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A year after my father past away in the most horrific event I have ever experienced. I saw him lying down in the streets outside by house as cold as hell with his guts spilled all over the street. The cause of his death was not explained and I have not been the same person since. No doubt losing my dad was as hard as losing my own guts. We got along well and having that string blown apart can really make a person go dark. As soon as I am a block away, I see a mysterious man from a distance at his house. He wore a black business ledger jacket along with a blue tie and he smiled in a very strange way. He then says "your father is not really dead boy, you only wish"? That statement sent a jolt of frustration down my throat. A random man telling me that my father is not really dead and that you only wish. I then started walking towards the man and the man then says I will see you around Rajan and goes inside his house while I pick up my speed and start running towards the door and said in a heat of anger, get over here you son of a bitch. At the door, I thought to knock and see if the man would open his door. After knocking and then not getting a response, I kick open the door and see that nobody was there. I heard nothing in this house. It was as if no one ever stepped foot in this house ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Buying a house for the first or second time, moving into a new job or position, moving from one neighborhood to another, as example can all be part of new goals to pursue. Now it is a good time to think what is next. It should mean planning a new moving experience or, on the contrary, deciding to stay in the new place for a long time, getting married or divorced, growing the family, getting into a new professional field, starting a business, joining a sport club, buying a house or a car, and so on. Return or Stay Even though the transition to the new life is finished, return or stay are always a big and permanent question in the mind of immigrants. This idealistic idea remain even after realizing that the new place, now called home, is much better and offers more opportunities for the family. This analysis is sometimes necessary to clarify or re–estate new goals. Returning home after certain number of years, staying for extended periods or moving to a different city or country can be also a decision made by the employer. • 21. A Guide Through Life : Losing A Guide Through Life Losing a Guide Through Life What is the most important sense. Taste, touch, hearing? It's sight. Sight can guide you through life, seeing people, seeing where you're going, what you're eating, anything you do will use sight. But there's another side of sight that we don't use as much. Seeing the emotion in a person, seeing the beauty in something. Sight can have two roads, it's literal sense, and the deeper more emotional and spiritual sense. And in Emily Dickinson's two poems, "Before I got my eyes put out" and "We grow accustomed to the dark" she expresses her experience of losing her sight not just in a literal way but in that deeper more spiritual way because she is accepting the loss of her sight, she is adjusting to the new life of darkness and they tie together that lien of emotion to show her coping with her loss of sight of the world. In Dickinson's poem "Before I get my eyes put out", the speaker of the poem that we for now will assume is Dickinson herself is experiencing losing the sight of the world and the beauty she saw in it. She talks about how she is living with her losing the sight but she would take seeing so much of the world that she loved in a heartbeat. This can be seen in the poem where Dickinson say " But were it told to me, Today/ That I might have the sky/ For mine, I tell you that my heart/ Would split, for the size of me" (Dickinson, 336) In these lines, the speaker expresses the love she would have to hear that she could see the sky for ... He ran out my room as fast as he could, so I couldn't catch up to him because he knew what was going to happen if I actually did. I went back into my room to get ready for the day. When I looked in the window it was dark and gloomy as if it was going to storm, but that was strange. The forecast predicted that today would be and sunny day, but I didn't think much of it. When I finished getting ready, I ran downstairs to eat breakfast. "Oh, Marika can you please take Malik to school today? I have an early meeting to go to, and I won't be able to take him." Mom asked. I nodded while stuffing my mouth with pancakes. After she thanked me, she left to go to her meeting. "Did you see the sky today?" Malik asked "Yeah, it was supposed to be the perfect day for swimming." I answered. "It's alright we can reschedule." We were walking to the car, but I felt this strange feeling, like something was going to happen. I brushed it off and continued walking to the car. "Can I drive?" Malik asked. "No." I answered. "Please!" "No." "Come on!" He pleaded, "I have my permit." "Fine... but don't try anything crazy," I told him. On our way to school, we drove past The Wall. I stared at it while Malik continued to drive. I think about what's behind the tall, white wall. Maybe there's more people out there living a completely different life from us, or maybe ... • 25. A New Life : The Experience Of A New Life A New Life I was a prisoner in my own body, captive inside my own skin, unable to break free. At the age of seventeen years old, I weighed over 255 pounds. I was unable to participate in ordinary activities due to the own restraints I had placed upon myself. I always felt alone in the crowd; I was self–conscious and felt as if the world always had a judgmental eye looking down on me. Food was my addiction, calories my drug. I was eating through my pain and depression. Food gave me a sense of safety and security unlike anything else. I was trapped, desperate for freedom. Until I decided to make a change; I decided that I was not going to be trapped any longer! I vowed to set myself free. On a cold, January morning a small group of my close friends from church met to kick off a new fundraiser. We had just opened a new food pantry, The Table, and were in desperate need of the finances to keep it running. A sweet elderly lady from our congregation, Mrs. Thelma, had provided us with the ideal and inspiration to host a weightless competition, which later received the name, "Choose to Lose to Make the Table Able". The objective of the fundraiser was to obtain sponsors whom would pay a dollar for every pound lost. My sponsors were unaware of the astronomical financial burden that I would place upon them. Being the overweight, food addicted teenager that I was, this competition was just what I needed to turn my life around. The very next day I began my weight loss regimen. I ... Mrs Mallard's Experience of Freedom in The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin In "The Story of an Hour", Mrs Mallard, who has a heart attack is the main protagonist. Like any ordinary women, she is a normal housewife who depends on her husband. The news of her husband's death gives her freedom and sets her free from restraints, marriage and a lifetime of dependency. Kate Chopin uses several techniques to create the image of how freedom affects Mrs Mallard. At first, Mrs Mallard is shocked by the news which is shown in "She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister's arms." and "When the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone." These ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She also uses "dull stare " and "not a glance of reflection" to show that Mrs Mallard is very confused and blanked. These construct a vexed and completely inanimate atmosphere which is also uttered in "a suspension of intelligent thought". This suggests that she is feeling puzzled and stupefied. Although Mrs Mallard is shocked, she actually feels happy at the news. It is shown in "Facing the open window, a comfortable, roomy armchair" and "She could see in the open square before her house the tops of the trees were all aquiver with the new spring life." These reflect that Mrs Mallard's new world is widened and burst with vitality. Words like "open window", "comfortable, roomy armchair" and "open square" repeat the impression of "openness" which creates a spreading image. "New spring life" symbolises vigour and "delicious breath of rain was in the air" symbolised freshness which reflect that the new life is brand new and worth rejoicing. These build up a lusty mood to describe freedom is spreading and filling Mrs Mallard's life with spirits. In the meantime, Chopin uses "crying his wares", "distant song which some one was singing..." and "countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves" to display the new kind of life is spacious and free in which people can cry and sing loud that even a note from the distance can be heard.

Dr. Patricia O'Reilly Life on New Planet 2 Introduction: The debate about the relative merits of exploring space with humans and robots is as old as the space program itself. There are some arguments that are advanced in any discussion about the utility of space exploration and the roles of humans and robots. Those arguments in roughly ascending order of advocate support are the following: 1. Space exploration will eventually allow humans to establish a human civilization on another world as a hedge against the type of catastrophe that wiped out the dinosaurs. 2. Human explores space and creates important new technologies to advance the economy. It is true that for every dollar spend on the space program; the economy receives about eight dollars of economic benefit. Space exploration serves as a stimulus for children to enter the fields of science and engineering. 3. Space exploration in an international context offers a peaceful cooperative venue that is a valuable alternative to nation state hostilities. One can look at the International Space Station and marvel that the former Soviet Union and the United States of America are now active partners. International cooperation is also a way to reduce costs. 4. Exploration of space will provide humanity with an answer to the most fundamental questions: Are we alone? • 38. Freedom In Kate Chopin's The Story Of An Hour In "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin a woman just received the news that her beloved husband had died. The story was written in 1894, a time when women did not have many rights. When the young wife, Mrs. Mallard, gets the news that her husband had died she is immediately overcome by grief. However, she later realizes that this is actually her first taste of freedom in her life. Chopin uses her short story to explore women's lack of rights at this time. After retiring to her room, Mrs. Mallard falls into a sense of numbness brought on by grief over her husband's death. She stares out the window with so many thoughts going through her mind. She was in such disbelief in the news she had received. However, she gradually begins to feel another feeling, and suddenly, "she said [it] over and over under her breath: "free, free, free!"(Chopin 1)." Mrs. Mallard has realized that despite the tragedy of her husband's death, she was now free. The newfound freedom was a whole new lite to Mrs. Mallard. Chopin further explores this feeling that has come over Mrs. Mallard when she writes, "there would be no one to live for during those coming years; she would live for herself (Chopin 1)." No longer does Mrs. Mallard need to live her life tending to her husband's needs and wants. He had supported her and provided for her but in return, she had probably done all the household chores and cared for him. She was tired of living for him and not for herself. But for her first time, she was free to devote all of her attention to taking care of herself and to do what she wanted to do. In spite of this sense of freedom, Chopin still points out the devotion between Mr. and Mrs. Mallard. While exploring a deeper question, can Mrs. Mallard really love him when she is his property? Chopin writes that Mrs. Mallard did not immediately embrace her sense of freedom as happiness, as "she knew that she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death; the face that had never looked save with love upon her, fixed and gray and dead (Chopin 1)." Mrs. Mallard knew that her husband had loved her and for that reason, she could not feel happy because of his death. Yet she admits to being free of the "powerful will ... New York Was The Hub For A New Life Imagine that a twelve year old coming home for a twelve hour work day of working with dangerous machinery and having to give your earnings to their parents so that they can help the rest of their family just merely get by that week. By the 1900s, ten to fifteen year olds made up one–fifth of the working population; some of these kids did not even have a family but they were working so that they could stay off of the street. Likewise, immigrants saw working in sweatshops as a way to keep their family from living a homeless lifestyle. New York was the hub for the first sweatshops in America, "Sweatshops first arose in American cities–most notably in New York City– during the nineteenth century and were made possible by the large number of impoverished immigrants willing to endure poor working conditions for low wages" (Tuerk). Immigrants coming to the new world saw many opportunities in sweatshops for a step into a new life, but they found themselves in a trap of fifteen hour work days with hardly any breaks and atrocious working conditions. Many children and immigrants saw working in sweatshops as a way out of their impoverished life and a step into a new life, but these people were sadly mistaken. Essay on Kate Chopin Kate Chopin "The Story of an Hour" The story "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin, written in 1894, is about a woman gaining independence and experiencing a new freedom, due to the death of her husband. The topic of the story was rather scandalous at the end of the 19th century. Women had no control over their property and weren't allowed to request a divorce. Luise Mallard is a young wife (p.78, 3rd paragraph). She immediately feels grief and starts to cry when Richards gives her the news about the death of her husband. She looks forward to the coming years (p. 78, 6th paragraph, end), she even hopes that she will have a long life, so that she can fully enjoy her freedom (p. 79, 3rd paragraph, end). But Mrs. Mallard will never lead such al life because her husband is not dead. When he comes through the door, directly after she realized what a life without her husband means to her, she is shocked. She dies because of her heart trouble, already mentioned at the beginning of the story (p.77, first sentence) and therefore foreshadowing what could happen in the end. The question is, what reason made her heart fail? The doctor says it was "joy that kills" (p. 79, last sentence) and because of this last statement irony is created. The reader knows more than the characters do because of the change of perspective when Mrs. Mallard goes up to her room. The narrator changes from an authorial narrator to a personal narrator and the reader gets a detailed description of her feelings. This mind–style enables us to suspect what the sudden appearance of Mr. Mallard could mean for Luise. It was certainly not joy that Brently Mallard is still alive that killed her. It was rather ... It also seems to appear that the women are for the most part at home and the men are off working on the railroad. The setting of the story keeps in line with the theme of the longing for being free of a repressive marriage. In both texts, knowledge and education advanced the character's life quality to a certain limit. In "Pygmalion," Eliza, a girl with no manners who seemingly lives on the streets seeks education in the means of language and manners in order to sell flowers at a flower shop. In "Arcadia," Thomasina, on the other hand, seeks education in the pursuit of curiosity. Both texts depict knowledge as a passageway for a better life but then show that it is how one utilizes the education and knowledge that determines one's quality and satisfaction with life. Education in "Pygmalion" is depicted as a stepping stone into a better life, but it is how one puts one's knowledge to use that determines their satisfaction with life. The main message of "Pygmalion" is appearances can be deceiving. Higgins, a high middle class man who studies phonetics––the science of speech–– with a proper education, conveys a persona of being cold, stern, proper, conventional, and intellectual. Eliza, on the other hand, grew up on the streets, which resulted in her hideous accent. She was "...not at all an attractive person...[She] wears a... hat... exposed to ... • 61. Personhood In The False Princess Who are you? More importantly, who would you like to be seen as to everyone else? Some may say they want to be an astronaut, or a photographer, or a successful business person. Unfortunately, wanting to be something and actually being something are two very different things according to Western Michigan University professor Ilana Nash. She claims "A woman's personhood can exist fully only in a society that support it ... unless her society shares that view, she will not enjoy real freedom" (Nash 45). Personhood is an idea that is prevalent in every form of storytelling and what better story to analyze with this idea that Eilis O'Neal's "The False Princess"? This novel literally opens with the protagonist having her identity taken from her. Using Nash's ideals about what it takes to possess personhood I will explain how Sinda, The False Princess, takes the personhood that was stolen from her, obtains the respect from others, and maintains her place in the new life she is thrust into. ""Sinda," I whispered. I waited for the word to have some meaning, to fill the empti[ness] ... But the name just faded away, filling nothing, lost" (O'Neal 16). Once a mighty princess, now a lowly nobody; This excerpt is the first time the protagonist, newly named Sinda, comes to terms with the fact that her identity has been permanently stripped from her. This is not simply a loss of her personhood, but a loss of her very being for 16 years. Sinda has been reshaped and cast out in a matter of minutes and she doesn't complain once during the process. Perhaps it all happened so fast or perhaps there is a sense of complete loss and lack of willpower in a circumstance like this, but what is clear is that there would be no coming back from something like this for Sinda. At this point in the story it is looking utterly hopeless in terms of Sinda's possession of an identity and more importantly a personhood. However, as Sinda begins to come to terms with her new life she is awakened to the power she posses literally and figuratively. Sinda overhears a disrespectful conversation concerning her and she erupts with emotion causing a vine she was gripping onto to crumble into ash. This is the first time Sinda begins to differentiate herself ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. My New Life Essay As I peered through my front window, I began to ponder what my new life would be like in Texas. I envisioned cowboys, bulls and tumbleweeds, expecting the entirety of the state to be set like a western. My Dad was rummaging throughout the house looking for anything that we might require on our three day drive to Houston. We were leaving prior to my mother and sister because my father needed to start his new job soon and there was still much to be packed. As we loaded the last essential items into the car, I got one last look at our small house in New Jersey and couldn't help but feel anxious. I wasn't accustomed to change, but little did I know, change would soon become a prominent part of my life and ultimately shape me as a person. Our first year in Houston we stayed with some of my mom's family friends until we found a suitable house. I began attendance at Boone elementary which was a part of the Alief school district. The transition was rough, I struggled to make new friends in school and my new home environment was much different, as now we had eight people living under one roof making it very cramped. By the end of second grade I had made a few acquaintances and gotten used to my new home. Shortly after, I was glad to hear the news that we would be finally buying a house and moving in soon. Our new 2 story house in Deerfield Village was located in northwest Houston and zoned to the Cy–fair school district. I started 3rd grade at Wilson elementary, a vast improvement ... • 67. A life without Freedom in Kate Chopin´s The Story of an... Kate Chopin's short story titled "The Story of an Hour" shows us in a number ways that life without freedom is no life at all. In the story, a nineteenth century women named Mrs. Mallard finds out about her husband's death. She has heart disease so Josephine, Mrs. Mallard's sister, tries to break the bad news to her as calmly as possible. After hearing the news, Mrs. Mallard's unpredictable reaction shocks us the readers as well as the characters in the story. Instead of feeling the sorrow of her husband's death, she feels the joy of freedom from him as well. Freedom is something that we as humans take for granted, and this story shows the importance of it through Mrs. Mallard's eyes. What is freedom? Is it being able to say ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "There stood, facing the open window, a comfortable, roomy armchair. Into this she sank, pressed down by a physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach into her soul" (Chopin 443). This quote, again, depicts how Mrs. Mallard had little to no freedom. The open window in this sentence represents the new life she has in front of her that is refreshed and cleaned. All she needs to do is get rid of the weight that is holding her back, which, in this case, is the sorrow and sadness she is feeling over her husbands death. Once she realizes this, she gets up and looks out at her new life with excitement that is uncontrolled. We see in Mrs. Mallard's eyes the true meaning of what it is to be free, and that it should not be disregarded. It takes Mrs. Mallard very little time to realize what it feels like to be finally free. She had never felt it before, as most women had not at the time. She did not know how to react. Once she realizes the true gift in everything that has happened and that she is now free, she rises up out of the chair, looks out the window at her new life and says, "Free, free, free!" (Chopin 443). This quote is important because they are the only words Mrs. Mallard speaks in the story. The fact that free is the only word she says in the story, shows that she finally understands the true meaning of freedom, which further solidifies my claim. It is because of these words we, as the audience, believe ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. This can be seen in the poem where Dickinson say " But were it told to me, Today/ That I might have the sky/ For mine, I tell you that my heart/ Would split, for the size of me" (Dickinson, 336) In these lines, the speaker expresses the love she would have to hear that she could see the sky ... • 71. Analysis Of The Book ' The Luck Of Roaring Camp ' In "The Luck of Roaring Camp" by Bret Harte, nature is seemingly created into its own character. Nature has the haunting role of being the giver and taker of life in this story. The forces of nature bring the men of the camp the blessing of a small child. Through this child the men are given life and see the beauty of nature around them. However, nature will ultimately strip the men of both of these things. Harte shows us that nature is the culprit that brings both beauty and pain. The first mention of nature occurs at the beginning of the story, at the description of Cherokee Sal's situation. Harte alludes to the effects of the very first transgression of mankind. He writes that Cherokee Sal had been suffering from the "primal curse". After the fall into sin, women would be cursed by unbearable pain in childbirth. Nature carries out its justice on women, by taking a beautiful event and making it into a dreadful one. Nature plays the role of divine prosecutor on earth and Sal's final judgement has come. Her life is taken by this cruel curse of nature. However nature plays two roles in the event of childbirth. What makes the pain of childbirth worth it, is the miracle of a new life that is brought into the world. Nature has delivered a new blessing into the lives of the men of Roaring Camp. It has come in the form of a baby boy. By the birth of Luck nature has simultaneously, given and taken life. Nature has evened out its score, it took something away, but in return it gave ... In ancient times, castration was required in order for men to enter the royal palace and to serve the royalty. At the end of the story, the story revealed that Sinuhe was not castrated because he has children. This showed that the king really trusted Sinuhe because all servants needed to be castrated except him. Throughout the story, the author stressed the idea that loyalty is essential because people were expected to be loyal to their own country and want to stay there until their death. Thus, nationalism plays a huge role in Egypt. After facing many hardships, Sinuhe was forced to leave his home country, Egypt. Therefore, he lived a new life ... In deciding to leave his new homeland and return to his home country, Sinuhe had to make a difficult decision: one that involves leaving behind people he has come to love, his own family. This definitely emphasized national propaganda to the audiences because in reality who would really leave family behind. While one might argue that Sinuhe did not have absolute love for his country because he would have run away in the first place, his return after many years of a new life with new loved ones should be justification enough. A prevalent theme of this story is not only that people have love for their country, but also are emotionally connected to it and, in so being, can remain loyal throughout the span of their lives. In addition, "The Story of Sinuhe" portrayed the life of an immigrant living in a foreign country. In the story, Sinuhe described his journey to Asia as an immigrant. Many immigrants left their homeland and traveled to other places, which were unfamiliar to them, because they wanted better lives for their family and for future generations. In certain situations, some were even forced to leave their homelands. Every immigrant has his or her own reasons for leaving their homeland.
