1. Question 5
How did you attract/ address your audience?
HUSTLE attracts the demographic audience in various ways, as we have
mentioned the stereotypical reader before we can now link this to the codes and
conventions used in the magazine, which relate to their characteristics.
2. First of all the within the barcode convention on the front page, the price is
clearly stated as being £2.99, this is addressing my target audience as
stereotypically they come from not necessarily deprived but areas that are far
less off than other areas, holding minimum to average wages. Because of this
we want to make the magazine affordable to the people who really care for
the content. This makes my magazine appealing as stereotypically people
read the price of a magazine as one of the fist factors in determining if they
buy it or not, therefore we draw people in as appearing financially viable,
costing the same price as a snack they may be buying. Additionally there is a
massive audience of students and youths who perhaps don’t hold jobs,
because of this the magazine needs to be affordable for them as they are the
next generation of the culture and so probably the most important and
influential age range.
3. To continue with analysing my front cover, the social media logos attract
younger audiences and “digital natives” (Prensky 2001) who are perhaps
more technologically savvy. This is because it is an important part of the
culture to keep up to date and in touch with the latest news, therefore
HUSTLE offers platforms on technology so that they can follow the culture
and learn more. If people are interested enough to buy the magazine then it
is highly probably that they may also check out the social media accounts.
4. Finally the front cover page for my magazine also attracts audiences by using bold and
intriguing colour combinations. Ultimately the use of white writing on a red
background for the HUSTLE masthead is important as this combination was also used
as propaganda during the second world war proving how eye catching and persuasive
it truly is. Furthermore the use of gold is also crucial to attracting the target audience
as we know success is something the stereotypical HipHop fan works or “hustles” for,
and connotations of the colour is richness and value. This money chasing mind set is
something which will draw attention to colours that look
valuable and use of props such as jewellery in images
has the same effect, it grabs attention as economic
success, and generically success in life is defined as
having lots of riches like gold, having connotations of
royalty.
5. Secondly my contents page addresses the target audience with the convention
of the title “street side” as it refers to the place on which the target audience
have grown up. This consequently will attract people who live (not literally) on
the street or in the UK it is referred to as on “road”, as this is a HipHop
dominated lifestyle. Because this is the contents page, people will feel as if all
the contents throughout the magazine will share similar denotations as the title,
being something they can relate to, therefore will address directly to them.
6. More so, the use of language on my contents page is important for engaging
audiences to read more in the magazine. First of all short and snappy sub
headings create interest into the story behind them by being memorable
staying in peoples heads after they have read them, for example “BEATS THAT
BANG”. Also they use slang, which addresses the audience and refers to them
directly by using language they recognise, also adding to the memorability of
them. Lastly the use of rhetorical questions in the sub-lines attracts
audiences, hooking them and encouraging them to answer the questions for
themselves, by doing so having to read the article. A rhetorical question can
make a reader think, this is important, as they will then feel a sense of
wanting to find the answer, hopefully turning to the page to find out. An
example of a rhetorical question used is on the first sub-line “Ever wondered
how its done?”.
7. Additionally the DPS has many conventions with attract the target audience;
most importantly the use of slang makes the content relatable and
understandable by the reader, for example “digging” or “safe”. If readers see
artists using similar language to what they commonly use then it will bring
the heart of the culture to their home, as if the culture has come from where
they have grown up. This will attract the audience as when they see the
language it will instantly gain their attention and interest to read the content,
as attentively as if it were someone they had know for ages writing on the
article (speaking within the interview).
8. Secondly, the pull quote (you’ll never see anything within this culture
like me again) is one major convention for attracting audience onto the
DPS. It is features on the front cover of the magazine, so when people
pick up the issue they will notice it and either be intrigued, and so
want to learn more about the story behind the quote. Equally another
way it attracts audiences to the DPS is upon flicking through the issue
may recognise the quote (as it is in the centre of the page in a separate
font colour and size to the rest of the interview) and so will stop on the
page increasing the chances they will read it.

9. Within my magazine the USP is indefinitely the puff promotion on the front
cover. This is because Omega is a American HipHop artist form Los Angeles
who first came to the charts in 1998. The fact is that Omega rarely performs
live and his event is set is sold out as he tours 6 states in 2017 for the first
time performing in 4 years. This is important because fans of HipHop will be
incredibly excited to have the chance to win tickets for his show for a number
of reasons. First of all, stereotypically my target audience doesn’t have lots
and lots of money to spare; therefore if they couldn't afford tickets they now
have a chance to see the much-loved artist for free. Secondly tickets are
incredibly difficult to get for events like this, and so people who are
stereotypical fans in the hood might not have access to be able to get their
hands on them, HUSTLE however had given them the chance to be able to get
tickets for themselves and friends. Other magazines offer similar kind of
prizes but the reason why HUSTLE's is so unique is because this is a rare
opportunity, not just offering tickets to a live performance to any artist, but a
king of HipHop himself.
10. In conclusion I attracted my specific audience in a number of ways using a
number of different conventions across all pages of my magazine that had
resemblance or reference to parts of the culture the are so interested in. the
most influential convention used is probably the puff promotion on the front
cover and also the cover lines. I addressed the audience in a number of ways
by linking in features of the culture not just to do with music but also through
fashion and color schemes which is effective as makes the magazine seem
tailored directly at the interests of the reader not just on HipHop music.
