1. How did you attract/address your audience?
Before creating my magazine, I initially did a questionnaire using Survey monkey.
This was to help me find out what my audience wanted to see in and from my
magazine. Some examples of the questions I included were, “What price is suitable
for the average magazine?” and “Who are your top 5 artists?” After looking through
the results, it allowed me to create my magazine catering for my audience’s needs.
The way in which I felt would be a good method of attracting an audience for my
magazine was through sell lines and the contents page. I would’ve hoped the initial
attention grab would be the close up picture on the front cover and the title of the
magazine which will intrigue my audience and would hopefully help sell more copies.
Once they open the magazine, the first pages will be the contents page, this is also
another feature of the magazine I wish to be attracting more readers. Due to the
significant amount of content, including sell lines and a band index, the readers will
feel more in depth with what they are reading and will enjoy the magazine just that
little bit more.
Uses and Gratification theory is a popular approach to understanding mass
communication. The theory divides media up into four categories of uses. These are,
Personal Identity, Education, Entertainment and Personal Relationships. The theory
places more focus on the consumer, or audience, instead of the actual message itself
by asking ‘what people do with media’ rather than ‘what media does to people’ (Katz,
1959). In view of the Uses and Gratification theory, I would say that most music
magazines, including my own, would undoubtedly fit into all those categories.
Personal Identity because along the way you tend to learn what you like and dislike
from a music magazine and therefore making it that much easier to design yours.
Education because you learn new things from the experiences of creating your
product, for example, when the next album is released or which artists are due to play
at the next big festival. Entertainment as the whole point of a magazine is being able
to sit down, read, relax and escape from all your problems and worries outside of the
entertainment trance you’re in, even if it is just for half an hour or so. Personal
Relationships as there is always chances to gain knowledge of someone you didn’t
know about and create a close bonded relationship with them although it may just be
some words on a page about them. Therefore taking this into consideration this, I
believe my media product is already fitting the guidelines.
After doing some research, I found that some people prefer tradition, and some prefer
modern. This is why I made sure The Pause confined of both old and newer artists, by
including this, I established that people are more able to continue the expanding
interest on modern and newer upcoming artists whilst still loving the old school
traditional all time favourites. As per the articles and features, I would include
different aspects of the music industry every week, having different facts/the latest
gossip with various musicians. This would attract more of an audience due to the fact
that a lot of young people are interested in magazines mostly for the interesting
factors that draw out their attention, and according to my research, most of this
interest comes from the gossip going around. In my media product, I ensured that I
also included, subscriptions and social media, this would help attract the audience as
the age group I am focused on (young adults) are always indulged in the technology
trance and hardly get their eyes off social media. This would help my magazine as
they would be updated with all the latest news and events and so would help sell more
2. copies. However the price of the magazine would play a part in the distribution. If the
price is too low, people wouldn’t think of the product as a suitable magazine to read,
but rather a boring magazine that isn’t getting much attraction and so decided to pull
down the price in order to get some sort of sales going. If the price is too high, no one
would buy it, as there may not be enough information to make it that expensive and so
some may consider it a rip off. Therefore I have to make sure I price the product at a
reasonable range, a price that of which my target audience could afford, for example,
£2.50. My house style throughout the product is dark purple and a turquoise, with the
subtext being black and the sell - lines on the front cover being white. The reason I
chose the first two colours as my main style was because I wanted to make sure I
made it a unisex magazine, to appeal more to the audience and draw them into the
product, more than a single sex magazine could do.
As discussed in one of my previous evaluation questions, I would use new media and
other promotional methods to sell my magazine. New technologies and social media
sites, are allowing us to do so much more in being able to connect with people around
the world via the internet. For example, the social networking sites that I would create
for the magazine, are Instagram, Youtube subscription channel and Facebook and
Twitter pages, the reason I have chosen these specific medium is because they are
known to be the most popular sites online and so it would be easier for my product to
be noticed by millions around the world. Examples of other selling ideas are,
Billboards, TV/radio ads, merchandise, the magazines own website, public transport
and maybe even mobile phone company deals.
