2. Conventions of genre
The conventional colors that are in the punk pop
genre include mainly dark colors, such as blacks
and purples. These are the colors that the band
and target audience will most likely be wearing.
Conventional props include instruments, skateboards and drugs. The
props are mainly associated with the younger generation. Typical settings
therefore are house parties, and other conventional younger age places
to hang out. For example car parks and street settings.
The music video will normally have some form of narrative to make it more
appealing and interesting to the target audience. This can be anything
from raising awareness in certain subjects to personal meaning to the
band.
Camerawork used in the punk pop genre is often close ups of the lead
vocalist to show key words or phrases they use. The lead vocalist will
typically be the main focus of the music video and they will appear at the
front of the band with the band shown just behind in a wide shot. High
angle establishing shots are used to show all the commotion and action
unfold and this appeals once again to the target audience.
3. Conventions of forms
The typical length for a song is about 3 minutes
30 seconds so therefore the music video has to
last this long.
The camerawork that will always be included in a music video is the
close ups of the lead singer singing. There will most likely be a wide shot
showing the whole band or artist. This establishes the people involved.
The editing always used in the music video is the lip syncing of the main
singer. The syncing of the instruments is also a key part of editing. This
makes it look much more professional and fluent.
The instruments will often also be
included. Even if the music
genre is rap where no typical
instruments are used then there
is often a shot of the deck
station or microphone with the
artist.
4. Use of technical elements
The use of technical elements in music videos is quite wide. In
camerawork if the music video is a narrative then much more
complex shots are used to bring across the story. However if the
music video is a performance or concert then the shots are
much more simple because technology is limited. Music videos
in general are basic in terms of camerawork and include straight
cuts in order to let the music video flow. The main reason why
people watch the music video is because of the song so the
music video itself doesn't’t need to be to technically advanced
and the main focus is the music.
5. Who your target audience
are
My target audience are all within the age range
of 15 to 25. This is the typical age where young
people will become rebellious and involve
themselves in drugs, drink, sexual activates and
parties.
The target audience enjoy spending time doing
art and listening to music. This shows they are
quite creative and is typical for the punk pop
genre. The gender that did my questionnaire
was 50/50 and this gave me an accurate
reliable questionnaire.
The style of my target audience is quite
distinctive. They dress in conventional dark
clothing and the bands will also wear these.
The target audience also wear things like big
boots, leather jackets, skinny jeans and vests.
6. How to appeal to your
target audience
In order to appeal to my target audience I will need to respond to my
questionnaire. The target audience said that they would rather see the band in
the music video rather than actors.
Camerawork can also be used to appeal to my target audience. I will
need to include shots of the band so that the people know who it is and
can look up to them as role models and idols. The lead singer is often at
the front of the shot to show he is the main one and show his dominance.
Other shots I will need to include in order to appeal to my target
audience are shots of the instruments. Its very conventional for a band to
include shots of the instruments in their music video. Finally I will need to
make sure that I take establishing shots to set the scene. The setting is
often a party at a house and by including an establishing shot at the start
it makes the viewer feel like part of the party and therefore appeals even
more.
The editing I will need to include in order to appeal to my target audience is conventionally fast
paced. It is often in a party setting so need to be fast paced and offbeat to match with the
setting. The other example of editing to fit with the typical form is lip-syncing and syncing with
the instruments. This is needed to make the music video look more professional and once again
more appealing to my target audience.
Mise-en-scene is needed to draw in the target audience and I will do this by setting my music
video in a party like setting with is associated with the young generation and they happen to be
my target audience. I will dress the band and other actors used in conventional clothing with is
things like big boots, leather jackets, skinny jeans and vests.
Sound is obviously the music itself but its conventional to have a little introduction by the band
giving that sense that you're involved with the music video.
