1. In What ways
does your media
product use, develop
or challenge forms
and conventions of
real media products?
Conventions Of Pop
The Definition of Pop is a genre of music derived
From Rock ‘n’ Roll. Cinematographically the
camera shots are a range of close ups, mid shots
and long shots. An outstanding use of Mise En
Scene as well as connotations of Love and Sex.
The editing is conventionally done to the timing
of the beat and the ideology that comes with
Pop artists is that they’re elite and there are
desirable to an “Average” person.
Music
Video
As you can see my music video conforms to the convention of pop music in correlation with the
cinematography as seen through my own images and the images of “Demi Lovato’s – Heart
Attack” music video which was released 9.04.2013 which means it’s also relevant to present day
attributes. Both mines and Lovato’s videos are performance based and therefore the use of long
shots are conventionally because you can seen Lovato performing with the band where as in my
own music video you can see my artist “Aurora” dancing, the long shots allows the viewer to see
the full performance and the emotion of “Dancing out the heartbreak, memories and regret”
with the extension and focus where as a close up would only allow the audience to
maybe see one body part on a full body movement which could signify something else. A long
shot is also used so the audience can see the location of the performance.
In contrast the use of a close up allows the audience member to see the “raw” emotion on the
artist face and see subtle facial expressions which you can’t see in a long shot, it’s generally used
more so when the artist is just singing which I use in my music video as seen in the previous
images, therefore I am still being conventional to the Pop genre.
A Mid shot allows the audience to view the singing in performance as well being close enough to
see the facial expressions which allows the viewer to gain a better understanding of the song
initially if they didn’t understand the lyrics first time round for example in my music video the
mid
shot seen in the image follows the lyrics “You can’t wait to leave” therefore the hand and head
gesture to the left could suggest how her ex-partner has turned his back on her.
As I’ve already previously said Mise-En-Scene is a big part of Pop Music Videos generally because
they have big budgets in which they can afford to spend on location and costume this is because
Pop Artists are stereotypically part of one of the Big Three – Song, WMG, or Universal. However
even on a low budget, I’ve still been conventional to the Mise En Scene of a Pop music video, just
On a smaller scale.
One Convention of the Mise En Scene in the Pop Genre is that is links to the concept of the album
throughout for example in “Pink’s – Please Don't Leave Me” from the album “Fun House” we see
the use of circus props such as the clown face and the carousal seen in the location shot as well
as the “sexy” nurse outfit she wears which is in the style of something we’d see someone dressed in at
a Circus or a fair.
I do this in my video in relation to the concept of being with nature such as the trees and on my
Digipak and poster the repetition of the blossom. Which relates to the idea of being connected to
the Earth and Spirit (Ghost) as well as the costume which is black that connotes the idea of death
and loss which is the double meaning of the album title “Ghost.” Additionally the use of the barbed
wire
and pulling on it, suggest the idea that the artist was trapped in her relationship and now she’s walking
free. Therefore my music video conforms to the conventions of the Pop genre as the Mise En Scene
pushes the concept of album and is highly important.
Additionally my mise en scene pushes the idea of “A journey” in my music video which can be
seen through the location of the path, which my artist walks along as well as dances along. At The
end we see a long shot of her walking away down the path. The path symbolises the journey of life
when we see her walking away at the end, she’s carrying on with her journey in life therefore she’s
sung her song of regret and heartbreak and she’s picked up the pieces and moved on.
Bulmer and Katz 1974’s “Uses and Gratification Model” looked at what the motives were
of the people that used the media and was split into four sections of “Surveillance, Personal
Identity, Personal Relationships and Diversion.”
When my targeted audience of typically Females ages 13-21 view this video they maybe able to
Relate through their own experiences of heartbreak. Furthermore because it’s conventional of
Female Pop artist to hold the ideology of Strong Independent Women and role models. The
audience are able to build their own Personal Identity by surveilling the music video and
listening
to the song which ties in with the theory of Laura Mulvey “The Male Gaze” of how females
perceive other females learning that they’re not alone they too can also be strong independent
Women and move on with their journey through life.
Moreover the effects of the pop colour filters which allowed the green to stream through in the
Image allowed me to create the effect of being connected with the earth and her spirit (Inner
self) and suggests that the artist is coming out of this darkness stage of being upset and colour is
beginning to stream through in her life by connecting with her self and stopping reminiscing
About how “You use to hold the door for me.” However we don’t see her completely hit the
light(colour – happy days) in the music video because she’s still on her journey.
Pop music has a tendency to be “Post Modern” which can be seen through McFly’s
“Love Is Easy”, One Directions – “What Makes You Beautiful” and Madonna’s –
“Vogue” as well as many more.
My music is suggested to be post modern through my editing style. I have used
eclecticism and used the effects of old movie pictures such as Charlie Chaplins 1914
“Tillie’s Punctured Romance”
The effect of an old film reel, and the scratches on the film that show up on screen helps
to suggest the concept of the video as a thing of the past and the artists is now moving
on with her life and other relationships.
This is also reinforced through the closing transition of my music video.
In Charlie Chaplin “The Kid” transition between the scenes are like the circular
fade out like the one above. The Closing transition for my music video represents
what would happen when old films reels use to break or cut out, which reinforces
the idea of one part of the journey being over. Therefore my music video conform
to the conventions of the Pop Genre by being Post Modern.
Through the use of Sound I conform the conventions of pop as I use the lyrics to build a loose
narrative and performance. The loose narrative began when researching the lyrics and analysing
them. I realised the song was about reminiscing the past but being bitter about it realising that
you have got to get over people who have broken up with you because there is no longer any
Chemistry or passion in it as seen through the lyrics “When the spark has gone and the candles
are out.”
The performance linked with the lyrics of expressive her emotions through contemporary dance
and singing about it therefore my music video conforms to the conventions of Pop music videos
because it links the lyrics (Sound) with the video and promotes the song through the video to the
audience to make them buy it.
Digipak
My Digipak conforms to the conventions of existing products because there is continuity
throughout the product of the Blossom(nature) and Colour Scheme of the filters used on the
images (Pinks, Purple’s and Oranges.)
Additionally the artists name “Aurora” is in her own font which I downloaded off “Dafont.com”
which is typical of a pop digipak such as Katy Perry’s – One Of The Boys”
My Front cover of my Digipak is
conventional to the form as the image links
with the album title which is “Ghost” The
Images of the ‘4 Ghosts’ in a pack plus the
main image of the artist which isn't opaque
suggests different sides to a person such as
the good and the bad, the pretty and the
ugly and how that makes a whole. It could
also suggest how there versions of the
artists from the past her “Ghosts” and how
maybe the actions in her past haunt her.
Additionally the idea of ghosts may perceive the
artists as powerful as the formation she’s stood in
looks like she has an army, possibly connoting
she’s stronger than an army referring back to the
ideology of Pop artists being a strong
independent woman.
Therefore my Front cover is conventional
because it links the language with the image as
well as having many different interpretations to it.
There’s no set interpretation and that’s a
convention of in general the form of music
however mainly Pop.
Additionally my digipak conforms to real media
products because it has a back cover with a track
list, barcode, copyright notice, and image.
The image holds continuity with the front cover
because it has the pink, purple and orange filters
of the blossom image, the front cover also has the
filters of pink, purple and orange filters.
Moreover the language of the songs
such as “Roller disco” and “Saving
The Last Dance” sound like typical
Pop songs as they’re quite light
hearted and fun mixed with the more
angst, heart ache ones such as
“Mean”, and “Before The Storm.” This
is seen in the real media product of
Katy Perry’s “One Of The Boys” – the
light hearted songs such as “Waking
Up In Vegas” and “Hot n cold” contrast
against songs such as “Thinking Of
You” and “Fingerprints.”
I got the idea to do a cross image when the audience opens
the digipak from Billy Joel’s – 12 Gardens Live. Billy Joel is
a Pop/Rock Artist from the 1970’s – to present day. On his
12 Gardens Live digipak the image of the crowd in black
and white in across two of the pages of the digipak therefore
I conform to the Pop Genre of music as I’m reusing old
styles which is part of Post Modern media.
Additionally I develop the pop
genre idea by writing lyrics
across the joint image. “How
Could I let you when you’re
only way I’ve ever known” this
is developed because
conventionally there would
normally be a lyrics booklet
with all the lyrics in however I
use this as a plug to allow the
audience to get excited when
listening to some of their
favourite songs from the artists.
Therefore I’ve developed a
convention of a song lyrics
booklet to using lyrics as a plug
to excite the audience.
Through the use of Mise en scene of the costume I’ve conformed to
the idea of the “Male Gaze” which suggest women are seen as
objects for the “Voyeur” this is because my artist is wear a lace
kimono which goes to mid thigh, so she’s revealing her legs with
gives of connotations of Sex. This a convention of the Pop Music
Genre as female artists are always been viewed as objects and
referred to in relation to sex such as Miley Cyrus and Rihanna.
In Pop music it is conventional to have an image
on the CD, as seen in Katy Perry’s “Teenage
Dreams” as well as text on the CD as seen in
Pink’s “The Truth About Love” I have
incorporated both of these ideas and developed it
to have both text and image on the CD.
The idea of having a black
and White background
against the colourful CD’s
represents the idea that
the music on the CD’s will
take you away from your
everyday life relating back
to “The Uses and
Gratification theory” and to
the fourth idea of
Diversion away from
problems at home.
Therefore my CD is
conventional because as a
real media text people can
use it as an escape.
Poster
The imagery of my Poster in conventionally because it links with the original CD Cover
As well as my music video. The image of ghosts although only three link with the CD
Cover where the filter used of the black and white and the pop colour green links with
the music video. As seen in Pink’s a truth about love the image doesn’t always
have to link with the image on the front cover.
However it has reference
to it through the same
costume and make up
she wears on the album
cover. Additionally the
image on my poster
reflects the “The Male
Gaze” as I’ve already is a
convention to the Pop
Genre as females are
Always been viewed as
objects and discussed
because they where
revealing items.
Additionally the use of
black clothing has an air
of mystery and sexiness
which creates the
desirable ideology which
is given to those of
celebrities.
My Poster is conventional to a real media product because it’s relevant and
informative, it answers the who, what, where and when. The most important
facts are in bold green such as the release date and what it features on it
such as “no.1 Single” it also has an icon of the album cover so if people didn’t
link it straight away they would when seeing that.
It has contact details which uses web 2.0 and social media networks. This is
conventional because media has to keep up to date with the develop in the
digital era. By being able to access “Twitter”, “Instagram” and “Vine” profiles
of stars you are able to follow them and keep up to date with gossip without
buying a magazine or a newspaper.
