Art of the Italian Renaissance
One of the greatest stories from the Italian Renaissance is the one of Fillipo Brunelleschi and Lorenzo Ghiberti. In 1401, the directors of the art of the
Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral held a contest for artists; to create panels for a the doors on the east entrance (Kleiner, 560–2). Because the east doors
faced the cathedral, the people thought it extremely prestigious to be able to participate in such a massive creation. After the first competition round,
two finalists remained; Brunelleschi, an accomplished and experienced artist, and Ghiberti, a younger artist, but one with just as much talent. The two
competitors were required to create a panel (or square) of Abraham readying to sacrifice Issac. Before reading which was which,... Show more content

It is said that history repeats itself, and in some instances this is true. Many Savonarola situations happened around the world, but one in particular
stood out to me as I have read about it before. The Boxer Rebellion, which occurred in China from 1899 to the early 1900's. A large part of the
Western world considered China as less developed than them, despite the fact that China had existed long before these countries. Certain people in
China grew very tired of being treated as underlings as they felt that the people of the western world were taking advantage of them. Because of this a
secret alliance began; a dangerous union which grew into a desperate attempt to purify China from all western thought. Hence the Boxer Rebellion,
which was a formation of young people bent on destroying any and everything to do with western thought. Like the situation involving Savonarola and
the destruction of classical texts, participants in the rebellion harmed and killed many missionaries, destroying homes, people, and even hospitals; they
burned a racecourse built by the English, and were involved in many lengthy battles. It is evident that the Boxers thought all Western ideas were evil,
and they assumed the only way to save themselves was to rid their country of foreign ideas; something that is familiar when compared to Girolamo
Savonarola and his frantic actions to purify Florence from humanistic ideas. My

Humanism In Renaissance Art
Humanism was an activity of reform in the pursued by philosophers, intellects, writers and community leaders, which would become known as the
Renaissance. This movement was influenced by the ideals of the Italian scholar Petrarch. The movement encouraged scientific studies and the
humanities of grammar, history and philosophy in order to revive the cultural community increasing humanity's achievement potential. Symbolically,
the biblical story of David and Goliath can be representative of Judeo–Christian beliefs conquering those of pagan antiquity and/or would be
adversaries. Currently, the story is referred to as an underdog analogy; a smaller, weaker opponent who faces a much bigger, stronger adversary has the
potential to be victorious.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Soltes, in 1504, Michelangelo, being inspired by his early Renaissance predecessors and the antiquated Polykleitos, rendered a
magnificent version of David in marble. Donatello and Verrocchio both portray a juvenile David; not fully mature as indicated by the boyish qualities
of David's body. Michelangelo depicts David as bit older, in what would be considered his young adulthood, suggesting the inspirational source of the
Roman copy of Doryphoros, by Polykleitos which depicts a male figure in his athletic prime. Soltes

Renaissance Art : The Renaissance Period
Renaissance Art
The Renaissance time period was home to many new ideas in art. This includes new artists bringing forth ideas that had yet to be discovered and
made popular. New themes and types of art were also being brought forward during this period. Numerous artists had to of been present to make
Renaissance art the way it is. Some of the world's most famous artists were working during this time period, including Leonardo da Vinci, and other
artists like Sandro Botticelli and Lorenzo Ghiberti.
Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, better known as Leonardo da Vinci, was a Florentine artist and is probably one of the most recognized artists of the

This period housed many depictions of the Virgin Mary, including Cimabue's Enthroned Madonna and Child. Mary was seen as the perfect example of
feminine virtue, showing chastity, piety, humility, and maternity. Images of the Madonna, or Mary, whether sculpture or painting, encouraged women
to live up to her. Mary wasn't the only woman that was looked up to in Renaissance art. Women could be portrayed as witches, saints, temptresses, or
members of the working class, and their image would still be an encouragement to dress and behave properly. (Jacobs)
As for paintings and sculptures, Renaissance art was very plentiful in these types of art, with many of the famous pieces of this time period being
paintings, such as the Mona Lisa or Birth of Venus. Along with themes, new types of art were being discovered and used during this time period, and
old types were resurfacing. This included the return of printmaking, like etchings, engravings, and woodcuts, from the Gothic period, which expanded
greatly during the Renaissance. (Boorsch)
Printmaking was a well known and widely used form of art during the late 15th and early 16th century Renaissance. Although this was late in the time
period, Rembrandt was known for his etchings and drypoints. The process of etching and engraving is carried out by taking a metal or copper plate
and covering it with an acid–resistant substance. The printmaker draws into the metal, exposing the plate. "Acid is then used to

The Renaissance : The Art Of The Renaissance
"The Renaissance is studied by the name of the artists and architects, with their creations recorded as great historical events"– Arthur Erickson. This
quote it accurately relates to many artists and architects as they shaped the world that we live in every day. The Renaissance birthed the great
talents from artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo who brought a life like perspective of art and set a trend of using light and
shadowing to bring the artwork to life. This allowed artist to be able to record a realistic image of families allowing us to see realistic images before
the creation of the camera was created. Architecture has changed the way that we live significantly as architectures such as Filippo Brunelleschi who
designed the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral discovering new definitions in gravity. Leon Battista Alberti (1404–1472) worked as an architect from the
1450s onward, Alberti was an accomplished man who discovered ways to discovered new ways to combine art and architecture together to create both
relevant and continent pieces yet beautiful and aesthetically pleasing at the same time.
The Renaissance was a time of re–birth and awakening in Europe especially in art as their pieces evolved into more realistic and life–like. The

Characteristics Of Renaissance Art
During the renaissance time art was very different from the art in the time before. The renaissance era was a time of "rebirth" and with that art had
changed as well. There were many great artists that really helped the understanding of renaissance art. Changes in art impact the growth of the
renaissance because there was a shift in the main subject of the art and the 10 characteristics of renaissance art helped the growth as well.
The time before the renaissance, the Middle Ages, the focus of their art was very religious and toward the end of the Middle Ages gothic art started to
appear as well. Mid 1400s Greek culture started to mix religions. During the renaissance the art shifted to more religious and non–religious scenes. Also
some of the art was of daily life and real tasks. This helped to go along with the humanism idea. There was also new forms of art that wasn't present
during the Middle Ages, for example, sculptures, murals, drawings, paintings and architecture. Due to these changes in the art the growth of the
renaissance grew by having a more variety of things to paint and also helped the humanistic idea even more.
In addition, the 10 characteristics of renaissance art helped the growth as well. Some of the characteristics went with the humanism idea that each
person had a role and responsibility, those characteristics are, figurlized sculptures of people to look perfect, the bodies looked active and had facial
expressions. All those characteristics help convey the idea of humanism. Another very important technique during the renaissance was mannerism
which is making the art look unbalanced to imply drama of the image. The characteristics for that idea is colors respond to light and deep backgrounds
with perspectives.
In conclusion, due to the many changes in the art from the Middle Ages to the renaissance you can see the impact it had on the people of the
renaissance. The use of the 10 characteristics help tie the main idea of the renaissance together. Without the changes of art people would still be using
art as a way to show religious images and it would not convey humanism.

Renaissance Art : The Renaissance And The Renaissance
The Renaissance, better known as the "rebirth "period helped bring life back to culture and the arts. It was a movement that began in Florence, Italy,
but eventually spread throughout Europe. It stemmed from a very dark period in history. Prior to the Renaissance, Europe experienced the Medieval
Times, or Dark Ages, a time of war famine, and disease. There were many causes of theRenaissance such as "The Black Death" and the new idea that
social class does not dictate your wealth. The Renaissance was a time where people began to think for themselves and attempt new artistic ventures.
People often think of the Renaissance as the "gateway " to the modern world. Many contributed to The Renaissance. Perhaps the most known are

his uncle sent Copernicus to Bologna, Italy, to study law. It was intended that he become a Doctor of Law. However, he preferred to spend his time on
astronomy, mathematics and learning Ancient Greek. This was important to him because many of the great works he needed to understand for his
astronomy were available only in Greek. In the end, he did not graduate. In 1501, he went back to Italy Nicholas's greatest contribution to the
Renaissance was the heliocentric model of the solar system. He changed the way of thinking, and This was because the Catholic teachings were based

In regards to art being defined by having the ability to evoke emotions from an audience, it should be recognized that art can still be shaped by the
values of today. Art isn't a concrete concept and varies among person to person regarding the ways they see art, and how it is portrayed. Therefore,
there is still a lot more to be learned about art and it's meanings. Art in the form of literature, like Candide by Voltaire, written in the 17th and 18th
century still holds implications and universal themes that can be seen in life in the 21st century. In relation to Candide itself, there are occurrences of
the themes of negative impacts of greed, views on man–made philosophy, and the harms of oppression. All of these topics are prevalent in current
society even though they may not be seen in the exact forms seen in the 18th century. Despite it being written to comment on the society of the
Enlightenment era, it also transcends through multiple eras, as each student or person who reads it can take away a new interpretation of it. With the
background of the culture and society one grows up in, different responses can add new emotion and meaning than originally intended and therefore
develops a story beyond it's literal meaning. Same can be said for other artworks of the past.

Comparing Gothic Art To Renaissance Art
Compare Gothic Art to Renaissance Art
The Gothic period, by and large set between the twelfth and fifteenth hundreds of years in Europe, was described by religious workmanship with an
attention on design. The Renaissance period, which covers the Gothic period in right on time years, is for the most part considered to have spread over
from the late fourteenth century to the seventeenth century, and enormously extended the degree and topic of craftsmanship. In spite of the fact that
these two periods have some normal qualities, the Gothic and Renaissance periods have altogether different purposes of core interest. Gothic
workmanship was essentially centered around Christian religious figures and subjects. Compositions of nudes or figures from mythology were not
normal in Gothic workmanship. Renaissance craftsmanship, however, extended its topic to agnostic legendary delineations, living rulers or
blue–bloods and other practical human scenes. Despite the fact that these new components were bit by bit presented, Christian religious imagery and

Renaissance Art : Ideas And Methods Of The Renaissance
The lifestyle in the medieval times lacked individuality. Existence was bland and quite dreadful. Spanning from the 5th until the 15th century, Europe
suffered through a significant dark period where human creativity and societal diversity was lackluster. This mindset changed at the beginning of the
15th century as revolutionaries and humanist ideas began to flourish. The common man began to express himself, religious power began to dwindle
and individuality increased. The glorification of man shifted to religious ideals and secular ideas became present. In many aspects, the Protestant
Reformation of the 16th century in Europe spawned the Renaissance humanist way of thought prevalent in preceding centuries. In other words, the
Protestant Reformation owes a majority of its development to the previously established ideas and methods of humanists. Humanist ideas were the
basis of the Protestant Reformation and forever changed the spiritual world of Europe. First and foremost, humanists wanted to portray a self images
they could be proud of. Humans were created in an image and likeness of God and Renaissance art began to reflect this belief. Prior to the

Sexuality In Renaissance Art
Renaissance art very commonly depicts women in many ways indicative of sexuality, specifically in regards to nudity and eroticism. Women in
renaissance art were normally shown as sexual and often erotic beings specifically in their positioning which is indicative of one of the main sources
of female power at the time, sexual, as proven by the high status of courtesans and larger social acceptance towards sex – while seen as a sin, it was
still an activity most took part in. However, at the same time, this promoted a female beauty standard and a conventional view that female power lies
predominantly in their sexuality. In this paper specifically, I will focus on this phenomena in three prominent paintings: The Birth of Venus by
Botticelli, Danae by Titian, and the Portrait of Simonetta Vespucci by Piero di Cosimo. The visible sexuality that women wield intrigues men, which
is why it is so often displayed in art. With this, sex, sexuality, and sex appeal are the ultimate channels by which to gain power. This is indicative in the
fact that courtesans ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, people still harbor sexual desire. Sexual desire was seen as man's punishment for the original sin committed by Adam in that it cursed the
people with torment in the form of libido, the biological and psychological facet of sexual desire for sexual activity itself. This produces a sort of
disconnect in that the people were expected to only have sex for procreation while their bodies would produce feelings that said otherwise, leading to
a necessary outlet to channel these feelings. Like many other feelings, these were turned into art. Often these depictions depict what was seen as the
ideal female form and then place it on display for the male viewers but in the painting the artist has the choice to take ownership over the woman's
sexuality, leave it open for interpretation, or to blatantly give ownership to the female

cultural elite of the time was bringing the ideas, moral values, art, and civic mindedness back to life to, what they believed, the two high points of
Western culture: Periclean Athens and Republican Rome (Backman, page373). Pier Paolo Vergerio, and earlyRenaissance writer on education, insisted

Art And Renaissance Art : Renaissance And Classical Art
The renaissance period extended from the start of the 14th century until the early 16th century. It was considered a period of enlightenment and rebirth.
Coming on the heels of the Middle Ages, the renaissance saw revived interest in classical art. However, since the concept of humanism was on the rise,
artwork during the renaissance depicted more realistic representations of the human form and were not so much concerned with perfection as seen
in classical art. From the flow of fabric to intense facial expressions, renaissance artists involved emotions and other elements of the natural world in
their work. I would choose this period over the classical period because I find the work more relatable. The use of perspective gives work done
during this period a very realistic feel. It demonstrates an understanding of anatomy and science to create the illusion of depth and space on a flat
surface coupled with and artistic ability.
Given the opportunity, I would like to meet Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti. The quintessential renaissance man, Michelangelo is renowned

High Renaissance Art
Three fascinating artists known as Raphael, Michelangelo, and Leonardo marked the stylistic period of the Italy 1500 to 1600. These three men
inspired the high Renaissance. Florence and Rome hosted the leading artist for that century. I will like to describe a painting of Raphael that caught
my attention from reading the textbook; it is called the Marriage of the Virgin. In this painting the artists used linear perspective to create the
illusion of space in the far back. He placed the vanishing point of the one point perspective in the doorway of the beautiful painted round house that
is symmetrical on both side. The artists created the plaster in different sizes of rectangular shapes in red and cream colors to emphasize on the
importance of linear perspective in the painting. If the painting was divided in two parts, the viewer will see that it is symmetric on both sides. There
are thirteen figures on each side of the painting with the high priest being the middleman placed in the center of the human drama. He also put the

After Michelangelo moved to Rome, one of the cardinals within the catholic church commissioned him to create a sculpture called ''La Pieta.'' ''La
Pieta'' was sculpted from a single piece of marble stone and it was a representation of Christ and his mother Mary. This 6 foot by 6 foot sculpture
only took 1 year for Michelangelo to complete it. The sculpture quickly became known for all the details that included the folding of the cloths, the
ribs, and the bones which are incredibly difficult to sculpt. After returning to Rome, Michelangelo heard about a sculpture that two other artists could
not complete because of its difficulty. Because of his success with ''La Pieta,'' Michelangelo decides to take over the job. He created ''David'' in 1501
and four years later the sculpture was placed outside the Palazzo Vecchio inFlorence. Michelangelo's intention was to portray ''David''as the perfect
and ideal man. Michelangelo took three years to sculpt this 17 feet sculpture, and ''David'' quickly became the pride of Florence. When Pope Julius II
heard about the artist's accomplishments, he commissioned Michelangelo to create his tomb. However, Pope Julius turns his focus in funding to
rebuild St. Peter's Basilica. Rome was overpassing a difficult time, and the Pope wanted to return it to its powerful roots. Michelangelo unhappy about
the Pope not paying back for the stone, returned to Florence. Yet, the Pope

Renaissance Art : The Renaissance And The Middle Ages
The Renaissance and the Middle Ages were both times of perseverance and change. Each time period helped to create myriad aspects of modern day
civilization, as many ideals and inventions spurred from these periods. It has been debated by many whether or not the Renaissance and the Middle
Age are significantly different. However, with the Renaissance came evolutionary developments in art, education, social classes, and politics.
Therefore, the Renaissance can be described as being distinctly different than the Middle Ages. The Renaissance is a period most known for its
developments in art. Due to the popularity of humanism, Renaissance artists focused on realistic portrayals of people and settings. Paintings like The
Birth of Venus (Botticelli) utilized perspective, depth, and chiaroscuro in order to more accurately depict life. This style of painting was drastically
different from that of the Middle Ages, as painting like Madonna and Child (Berlinghiero) were one–dimensional, dark in color, and very religious. The
general style of each of these periods' reflect their basic ideals, the religious and cynical feelings of the Middle Ages and the humanistic and curious
feelings of the Renaissance. Even though biblical references were the main theme of artwork from both the Renaissance and the Middle Ages, artists
focused on the different ideas of their respective periods. The fact that Renaissance artists focused on the human form and artists of the Middle Ages
focused purely on religious ideals shows that the two time periods are very different, not only in art styles, but also in principles. Education, while
present in both time periods, was more developed and widespread in the Renaissance than in the Middle Ages. The large focus on humanism during the
Renaissance caused an influx of schools throughout Europe. Schools were developed in order to teach young men "Latin grammar and
rhetoric...Roman history and philosophy, and...Greek in order to study Greek literature and philosophy" (McKay). Renaissance education was centered
around creating well–rounded individuals, as it was becoming more important to spread knowledge about classical thinking than it was to spread the
teachings of the Church. Schools of the

a.Renaissance
Renaissance movement is a period which took place between 14th and 17th century. It began in Italy and later spread to the rest of European countries.
It was a cultural movement which tried to invent what was intellectually referred to as humanism. This period is characterized by a more natural reality
in painting as well as educational reform. (Brotton, 2006).
Latin and vernacular literatures became common in this period with emergence of learning techniques based on classical sources. It is this period that
shaped the political and social structures in Italy.
The renaissance art work symbolized a rebirth in the cultural practices both in the middle ages and in modern times. A number of works of art took

Romanticism is a movement which originate from Europe at a period towards the end of the 18th century. The movement was at its peak at the era in
between 1800–1850. It involve work of art, literary and intellectual work as well as musical part of it and focus more on emotion and individualism.
Glorification also characterized the period. This period emerged as a reaction towards industrial revolution, the enlightenment age as well as scientific
rationalization of nature. (Gerald, 1987).
An example of a visual art performed during this romantic era is The Chancel and crossing of the Tintern Abbey. This piece of painting occurred in
1794 and was done by Mallord William Turner after he made two visits to Tintern Abbey a monastery founded in 1131 but neglected in 1536. He
was overwhelmed by the site and painted a piece showing the smallness of man alongside the wilderness of nature. The second example is Fishermen

Art And Art In The Renaissance
Art, drama, and music have always been shaping forces in society as they explore a variety of issues unique to the society of the time. From the
seventeenth through nineteenth centuries, the fine arts shaped urban life in Venice, Italy and Edo, Japan. The art and music created represented the
artists, the citizens and also depicted the attitudes and interests of society at the time. Furthermore, it impacted the city life, in economic, social and
political ways. Exploring and comparing fine art between these two cities will provide a glimpse into these societies.
Venice in the late Renaissance period was one of the most peaceful and tolerant societies within Europe. The city itself was not known for its political
fervour, but for their thriving fine arts. The uniqueness of the city coupled with the history of family guilds allowed for fine arts, such as music and
painting to become incredibly popular, to locals and tourists alike. The impact that art, specifically painting, had on city life is seen through the
popularity of Venetian painters throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Venice achieved much of its economic success due to popular
painters such as Sebastiano Ricci and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. These men had their work become exceedingly popular abroad which attracted
visitors to the city to view their work and others of the time. Tourists frequently visited the city due to the variety of entertainment available. Along with

Renaissance Art Analysis
The Renaissance period is known for displaying a new interest in naturalism. It was also the beginning of humanism, where portraits became highly
popular, starting around 1400. Increases in artistic patronage, particularly among the middle class, happened between the 15th and 18th centuries, and
Leonardo Da Vinci, a popular artist of the Renaissance period, painted many paintings commissioned by people outside of the Church.
One such example is the famous painting, the Mona Lisa, which Da Vinci supposedly painted inFlorence for a Florentine merchant (the female in the
painting is rumored to be his wife), according to Harris and Zucker (2016). I wanted to include a photograph of it, but unfortunately, the Louvre does

This new diversity in patrons over the 15th to 18th centuries meant a giant move away from religious–themed art, which had always been
commissioned by the Church, and was only really visible to people in Churches. Art became more versatile and less focused on religion – more
mythical in some areas, while focusing on real life scenarios and wealthy people in others.
What I like about the significant shift over those centuries is that art became more of what it is today; it resonated with a wider audience, and
people started to have more of a say in what they would like commissioned. Basically, anything goes in the art world, and I believe this push to a wider
audience and varied patronage helped to create the worldwide love of art we see today; it is a somewhat of a joyful necessity in life, and comes in all
forms and is of all subjects.
Furthermore, the private patronage helped to push up the pricing of art, particularly of famous artists, which has seen pricing sky–rocket throughout
history, from around the late 1400s until the present

Humanism In The Renaissance Art
Final Exam
1.In general, humanism is considered as a "focus on the actions of human beings." (Sayre 66). This focus came to light after the Middle Ages, where
art only centered around God and religion. The Renaissance period marked a shift from a Christian–centered view to a humanistic emphasis that was
expressed in the paintings, music, and sculptures. Renaissance artists were also able to redefine humanism through the "recovery, study, and spread of
the art and literature of Greece and Rome, and the application of their principles to education, politics, social life, and the arts in general." (Sayre 205). A
painting that really exemplifies the significance of humanism to the Renaissance period is the School of Athens by Raphael. Raphael created this piece
as way of demonstrating the worth of human beings in the midst of their scholarly pursuits. He highlights the recovery of Greek and Roman art and
literature through the numerous references and symbols relating to past scholars and gods. Through the use of one–point perspective, the art piece
immediately points the attention of the audience to the two figures of Aristotle and Socrates. By putting Aristotle and Socrates in the center, Raphael
emphasizes the central theme of humanism through putting humans themselves in the middle. These philosophers also demonstrate how education
and pursuit of knowledge became a beacon of the human worth. Another recognizable illustration of humanism is the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da

School Of Renaissance Art
During the Renaissance art period, the Catholic Church was considered to be one of the major patrons of art. Patrons of the church ranged from popes,
prelates, convents, monasteries, and other religious organizations. Soon, works of part began being commissioned by civil governments and wealthy
individuals, most notably the Medici of Florence (History.com). While Florence was the center ofRenaissance art, Rome eventually took over during
the High Renaissance period. Many great artists came out of this period, including Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. Being the youngest
out of the three iconic artists and learning from da Vinci and Michelangelo, Raphael "expressed the classical ideas of beauty, serenity and harmony"
(History.com) through his famous painting, the School of Athens. Considering the act of combining worldly and spiritual thinking into a painting, the
School of Athens is considered to be one of the finest examples of Renaissance Art. The School of Athens was painted between 1509–1511 C.E. and is
located in Vatican City, Italy. While looking at this massive image, 16'5" x 25'3" feet, the viewer can see many figures that take up the majority of
this philosophical painting. This painting is considered to be a fresco because the paint was put on fresh, wet plaster walls. The colors sink down into
the wet plaster, allowing the colors to be more vibrant than if they were just painted on a canvas. The School of Athens was commissioned by Pope

more classic works instead of theology. Classic art and literature grew extremely popular, contrasting the lack of interest in them before. Many artists

Born March 6, 1475, Michelangelo Buonarroti "is considered [to be] one of the most famous artists of the Italian Renaissance." (Biography.com
Editors) As a child, Michelangelo had a greater interest in artwork and its production rather than schooling, so at the age of 13 his father allowed him
to become Domenico Ghirlandaio's apprentice in Florence. During his teenage years, Michelangelo studied classic sculpture in the Florentine gardens
of the Medici family, who were wealthy and allowed him access to the elite of Florence. After studying there for a few years, he eventually moved
to Rome, where he would work until he died. Known for his sculptures the Pieta and David, and for his paintings on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel
and the Last Judgement Michelangelo had many other works. Michelangelo's innovated artistry was believed to have achieved a whole new depth
over the timespan. Like da Vinci, Michelangelo is said to have influenced Raphael, an artist who actually was his arch rival. This is an example of
how Michelangelo was influential during the Renaissance. His artwork depicted scenes from the bible and were painted in the Sistine Chapel which is

Humanism In Renaissance Art
The Renaissance began in the 1300's and brought with it many new ideas and ways of thinking. The main one of these ideas being humanism, or that
the best that a man can be is greater than the idea of theology. The Italians began to spread this idea and it began to grow. The Italians decided that the
best way to express and spread the idea of humanism during the Renaissance was through their sculptures and paintings. This can be seen in many
works of art from this time period such as the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, The School of Athens by Raphael, and Michelangelo's David.
First, humanism is visible in many paintings and sculptures from the Renaissance time period, one example of this is Leonardo da Vinci's Mona
Lisa. The Mona Lisa is a very simple painting as far as what is shown, it is a woman seated in a chair and her upper torso and up is shown and she is
sitting in front of a very scenic background with mountains, trees, water, and the sky. She is also dressed in very plain clothing, a brown dress. The

Machiavelli And The Renaissance Art
As "Italy was the cultural leader of Europe" (The Intellectual Renaissance in Italy), the Renaissance served as the needed change for the Medieval
World to become the modern world. In politics, Machiavelli introduced a secularized political theory that would guide future rulers without dependence
on God. In the economy, merchants became bankers by giving money to the wealthy and receiving interest back. Northern Christian Humanists used the
Renaissance to enhance the Church through the encouragement of new education and ideals. The "Renaissance Man" became the example to strive
towards in society to perfect one's self in daily life. Education improved through the integration of classical works from authors, such as Cicero. Painters
made Renaissance art distinct from Medieval art through the new technique of perspective. Geographically, Italy stands next to the Mediterranean Sea,
allowing abundant trade. The technological creation of the printing press allowed news and writings to spread easily to people. The Renaissance was
a bridge from the Medieval to modern world because of Machiavelli's political theory which modeled a great ruler without God's help, the
combination of Christianity with the Renaissance to encourage religious feeling, society using the "Renaissance Man" to set an example of a perfect
man, and the improvement of education by including liberal arts. In order to view politics away from the morals of Christianity, Machiavelli wrote The

Renaissance Art : Giotto's Contribution To The Renaissance
The fourteenth and fifteenth centuries were as distinguished for their masterpieces of painting, sculpture, and architecture as they were for their
scholarship. Although artists continued to depict biblical subjects, the spread of Greco–Roman learning led many artists, especially in Italy, to portray
Greco–Roman deities and mythical tales. Another popular trend was depicting the scenes of daily life.
However, neither daily life nor classical images were entirely new subjects. Renaissance art, like Renaissance scholarship, owed a major debt to earlier
generations. The Florentine painter Giotto had a formidable influence on the major Italian painters of the fifteenth century, who credited him with
single–handedly reviving the "lost art of painting." In his religious scenes, Giotto replaced the stiff, starving figures of the Byzantine style, which were
intended to overawe viewers, with more natural human portraits with whose emotions of grief and love viewers could identify. Rather than floating on
backgrounds of gold leaf, his saints inhabit earthly landscapes.
Another important contribution to the early Italian Renaissance was a new painting technology from north of the Alps. The Flemish painter Jan van
Eyck mixed his pigments with linseed oil instead of the diluted egg yolk of earlier centuries. Oil paints were slower drying and more versatile, and
they gave pictures a superior luster. Van Eyck's use of the technique for his own masterfully realistic paintings on religious

Renaissance Art Change
The Renaissance was a time of progression in art. It became a more popular job due to the Medici, and therefore art itself changed and grew throughout
the Renaissance. Art became more realistic in the Renaissance due to the development of new paint, linear perspective, and the study of anatomy. To
begin with, art changed and became more realistic during the Renaissance. "When oil was used in the 15th century it offered greater realism and
allowed for finer detail than before."1 Oil paint made it easier to blend, thus creating a more convincing illusion of depth and realism. Before,
tempera paint was used, which dried very quickly, making it difficult to get smooth blending. "...[Another] essential advancement made by
Renaissance painters was the use of perspective, or the appearance of distance or depth on a flat surface. ... They showed perspective by enlarging
objects closer to the front, using precise shading, drawing lines closer together as they receded, and other skillful methods."2 Perspective allowed
artists to create more realistic work. Anatomy was also improved upon during the Renaissance. Instead of the stiff figures common in art from the
Middle Ages, people had energy and fluid movements. Artists also focused on things such as muscles that would help them create figures that looked as

artists were well known for. All of these attributes are that of a typical Renaissance painting. Overall, art changed drastically during the Renaissance.

Scupltors In The Renaissance Art
The Renaissance tried to recapture more than beauty. It tried to reproduce the truth. And that is a theme that runs throughout the development of
sciences, philosophies, arts, music and more, throughout this revolutionary period of human history. But if we take a closer look at some of the
sculptures from the Renaissance era we see, still, even more than an attempt to bring reality into art, but to bring history to life somehow–through art.
Thus we see a number of scupltors in the Renaissance strove to recapture the feeling and beauty of Greek and Roman sculptures, as well as the
histories behind the characters those sculptures depict. Indeed there are certainly a number of sculptures made simply in honor of these lost cultures.

Art During The Renaissance
The Renaissance in Italy included some of the greatest artists we have ever seen from Leonard Da Vinci, to Michelangelo, and Raphael. The
Renaissance took place from the late 13th to 16th centuries. Firstly, during the renaissance liberal arts was brought back to light, which were on the
brink of being extinct1. Secondly, what is also interesting about art during this time was that most of the art had Christian in its roots, for example,
Botticelli's The Allegory of Spring is said to have had a Christian interpretation1. "Every Italian artist, willingly took the title of architect, sculptor, and
painter" 2. At the beginning of the fifteenth century, the Italian painters had asked the Flemish painters for their secret techniques because the Italians
felt like the language of painting was one that was always meant for them2. The sculptors claimed their inspiration from ancient works. Lastly the
Renaissance introduced idea of individualism, which helped the Italians get away from everything that was going on during that time. Art during the
Renaissance included painting, sculpting and architecture, all of which were an important part in expressing the idea of individualism and making
art what is today. Fresco was one of the most popular works artists did during this time because it was fairly cheap and a lot of buildings, like
churches had no windows and were just plain, concrete walls. Frescos helped soften up the walls by telling stories through the frescos.

The Renaissance Style Of Art
Throughout prehistory and history, there have been a variety of art types or styles, from the first Stone Age cave drawings through the current focus on
Postmodernism and Deconstruction. Different locations and different times create distinct flavors of art. The Renaissance style of art dates roughly to
the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, starting in Italy and spreading throughout Europe. And just like many previous and subsequent art styles,
Renaissance art was birthed from a prior art style – Medieval. The shift from Medieval to Renaissance was profound in both style and form, as well as
in the distinctions that came to the artists. There are many Renaissance artists from that time that quickly come to mind: Botticelli, Donatello,
Michelangelo, and Raphael. But the artist that truly encompasses all that comprised the Renaissance is Leonardo da Vinci.
Before we dive too deeply into da Vinci's contributions, some context is necessary. A basic definition of the Renaissance would be that of a rebirth or
revival. It was a time of discovery, science, and a new appreciation of the arts. It was a drastic turn from the prior centuries that are often characterized
as the Dark Ages; the time after the fall of Rome during the fifth century through the fourteenth century. In reference to art, theMiddle Ages focused
almost solely on religion as the theme for artwork. Art from this time is reminiscent of the Egyptian style, especially in the earlier centuries, departing

Characteristics Of Renaissance Art
The Renaissance was an era in Europe where art took a big revolution. Renaissance art had seven characteristics that set it apart from art in the previous
ages. The characteristics of renaissance art include realism and expression, perspective, classicism, emphasis on the individual, geometrical arrangement

Women combined in an exhibit would perfectly showcase every characteristic of renaissance art. Each piece of art has certain characteristics that make
it truly a Renaissance art masterpiece. The Madonna and Child with Pomegranate, The Liberality of Titus, and Portrait of a Young Women are all
pictures that portray the seven characteristics of renaissance art, therefore making them a perfect choice for the Seven Characteristics of Renaissance
Art exhibit. The first piece of art that should be included in the Seven Characteristics of Renaissance Art exhibit is Madonna and Child with a
Pomegranate by Leonardo Da Vinci. This painting showcases Madonna, who is Mary the mother of Jesus. She has baby Jesus on her lap. Baby Jesus
is holding a pomegranate, which symbolizes spirituality in many stories in the bible, as well as hope and eternal life. Firstly, this piece shows realism
and expression. The woman and the child in the picture have real human qualities. The Madonna looks like what an everyday woman would look like.

Art Of The Italian Renaissance

  • 1. Art of the Italian Renaissance One of the greatest stories from the Italian Renaissance is the one of Fillipo Brunelleschi and Lorenzo Ghiberti. In 1401, the directors of the art of the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral held a contest for artists; to create panels for a the doors on the east entrance (Kleiner, 560–2). Because the east doors faced the cathedral, the people thought it extremely prestigious to be able to participate in such a massive creation. After the first competition round, two finalists remained; Brunelleschi, an accomplished and experienced artist, and Ghiberti, a younger artist, but one with just as much talent. The two competitors were required to create a panel (or square) of Abraham readying to sacrifice Issac. Before reading which was which,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is said that history repeats itself, and in some instances this is true. Many Savonarola situations happened around the world, but one in particular stood out to me as I have read about it before. The Boxer Rebellion, which occurred in China from 1899 to the early 1900's. A large part of the Western world considered China as less developed than them, despite the fact that China had existed long before these countries. Certain people in China grew very tired of being treated as underlings as they felt that the people of the western world were taking advantage of them. Because of this a secret alliance began; a dangerous union which grew into a desperate attempt to purify China from all western thought. Hence the Boxer Rebellion, which was a formation of young people bent on destroying any and everything to do with western thought. Like the situation involving Savonarola and the destruction of classical texts, participants in the rebellion harmed and killed many missionaries, destroying homes, people, and even hospitals; they burned a racecourse built by the English, and were involved in many lengthy battles. It is evident that the Boxers thought all Western ideas were evil, and they assumed the only way to save themselves was to rid their country of foreign ideas; something that is familiar when compared to Girolamo Savonarola and his frantic actions to purify Florence from humanistic ideas. • 2. Humanism In Renaissance Art Humanism was an activity of reform in the pursued by philosophers, intellects, writers and community leaders, which would become known as the Renaissance. This movement was influenced by the ideals of the Italian scholar Petrarch. The movement encouraged scientific studies and the humanities of grammar, history and philosophy in order to revive the cultural community increasing humanity's achievement potential. Symbolically, the biblical story of David and Goliath can be representative of Judeo–Christian beliefs conquering those of pagan antiquity and/or would be adversaries. Currently, the story is referred to as an underdog analogy; a smaller, weaker opponent who faces a much bigger, stronger adversary has the potential to be victorious.... According to Soltes, in 1504, Michelangelo, being inspired by his early Renaissance predecessors and the antiquated Polykleitos, rendered a magnificent version of David in marble. Donatello and Verrocchio both portray a juvenile David; not fully mature as indicated by the boyish qualities of David's body. Michelangelo depicts David as bit older, in what would be considered his young adulthood, suggesting the inspirational source of the Roman copy of Doryphoros, by Polykleitos which depicts a male figure in his athletic prime. This period housed many depictions of the Virgin Mary, including Cimabue's Enthroned Madonna and Child. Mary was seen as the perfect example of feminine virtue, showing chastity, piety, humility, and maternity. Images of the Madonna, or Mary, whether sculpture or painting, encouraged women to live up to her. Mary wasn't the only woman that was looked up to in Renaissance art. Women could be portrayed as witches, saints, temptresses, or members of the working class, and their image would still be an encouragement to dress and behave properly. (Jacobs) As for paintings and sculptures, Renaissance art was very plentiful in these types of art, with many of the famous pieces of this time period being paintings, such as the Mona Lisa or Birth of Venus. • 13. Sexuality In Renaissance Art Renaissance art very commonly depicts women in many ways indicative of sexuality, specifically in regards to nudity and eroticism. Women in renaissance art were normally shown as sexual and often erotic beings specifically in their positioning which is indicative of one of the main sources of female power at the time, sexual, as proven by the high status of courtesans and larger social acceptance towards sex – while seen as a sin, it was still an activity most took part in. However, at the same time, this promoted a female beauty standard and a conventional view that female power lies predominantly in their sexuality. In this paper specifically, I will focus on this phenomena in three prominent paintings: The Birth of Venus by Botticelli, Danae by Titian, and the Portrait of Simonetta Vespucci by Piero di Cosimo. The visible sexuality that women wield intrigues men, which is why it is so often displayed in art. With this, sex, sexuality, and sex appeal are the ultimate channels by which to gain power. This is indicative in the fact that courtesans ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, people still harbor sexual desire. Sexual desire was seen as man's punishment for the original sin committed by Adam in that it cursed the people with torment in the form of libido, the biological and psychological facet of sexual desire for sexual activity itself. This produces a sort of disconnect in that the people were expected to only have sex for procreation while their bodies would produce feelings that said otherwise, leading to a necessary outlet to channel these feelings. Like many other feelings, these were turned into art. Often these depictions depict what was seen as the ideal female form and then place it on display for the male viewers but in the painting the artist has the choice to take ownership over the woman's sexuality, leave it open for interpretation, or to blatantly give ownership to the female ... However, since the concept of humanism was on the rise, artwork during the renaissance depicted more realistic representations of the human form and were not so much concerned with perfection as seen in classical art. From the flow of fabric to intense facial expressions, renaissance artists involved emotions and other elements of the natural world in their work. Each time period helped to create myriad aspects of modern day civilization, as many ideals and inventions spurred from these periods. It has been debated by many whether or not the Renaissance and the Middle Age are significantly different. However, with the Renaissance came evolutionary developments in art, education, social classes, and politics. Therefore, the Renaissance can be described as being distinctly different than the Middle Ages. The Renaissance is a period most known for its developments in art. Due to the popularity of humanism, Renaissance artists focused on realistic portrayals of people and settings. Paintings like The Birth of Venus (Botticelli) utilized perspective, depth, and chiaroscuro in order to more accurately depict life. This style of painting was drastically different from that of the Middle Ages, as painting like Madonna and Child (Berlinghiero) were one–dimensional, dark in color, and very religious. The general style of each of these periods' reflect their basic ideals, the religious and cynical feelings of the Middle Ages and the humanistic and curious feelings of the Renaissance. Even though biblical references were the main theme of artwork from both the Renaissance and the Middle Ages, artists focused on the different ideas of their respective periods. The fact that Renaissance artists focused on the human form and artists of the Middle Ages focused purely on religious ideals shows that the two time periods are very different, not only in art styles, but also in principles. Education, while present in both time periods, was more developed and widespread in the Renaissance than in the Middle Ages. The large focus on humanism during the Renaissance caused an influx of schools throughout Europe. Schools were developed in order to teach young men "Latin grammar and rhetoric...Roman history and philosophy, and...Greek in order to study Greek literature and philosophy" (McKay). This focus came to light after the Middle Ages, where art only centered around God and religion. The Renaissance period marked a shift from a Christian–centered view to a humanistic emphasis that was expressed in the paintings, music, and sculptures. Renaissance artists were also able to redefine humanism through the "recovery, study, and spread of the art and literature of Greece and Rome, and the application of their principles to education, politics, social life, and the arts in general." (Sayre 205). A painting that really exemplifies the significance of humanism to the Renaissance period is the School of Athens by Raphael. Raphael created this piece as way of demonstrating the worth of human beings in the midst of their scholarly pursuits. He highlights the recovery of Greek and Roman art and literature through the numerous references and symbols relating to past scholars and gods. Through the use of one–point perspective, the art piece immediately points the attention of the audience to the two figures of Aristotle and Socrates. By putting Aristotle and Socrates in the center, Raphael emphasizes the central theme of humanism through putting humans themselves in the middle. • 35. Renaissance Art : Giotto's Contribution To The Renaissance The fourteenth and fifteenth centuries were as distinguished for their masterpieces of painting, sculpture, and architecture as they were for their scholarship. Although artists continued to depict biblical subjects, the spread of Greco–Roman learning led many artists, especially in Italy, to portray Greco–Roman deities and mythical tales. Another popular trend was depicting the scenes of daily life. However, neither daily life nor classical images were entirely new subjects. Renaissance art, like Renaissance scholarship, owed a major debt to earlier generations. The Florentine painter Giotto had a formidable influence on the major Italian painters of the fifteenth century, who credited him with single–handedly reviving the "lost art of painting." In his religious scenes, Giotto replaced the stiff, starving figures of the Byzantine style, which were intended to overawe viewers, with more natural human portraits with whose emotions of grief and love viewers could identify. Rather than floating on backgrounds of gold leaf, his saints inhabit earthly landscapes. Another important contribution to the early Italian Renaissance was a new painting technology from north of the Alps. The Flemish painter Jan van Eyck mixed his pigments with linseed oil instead of the diluted egg yolk of earlier centuries. Oil paints were slower drying and more versatile, and they gave pictures a superior luster. Van Eyck's use of the technique for his own masterfully realistic paintings on religious ... Art became more realistic in the Renaissance due to the development of new paint, linear perspective, and the study of anatomy. To begin with, art changed and became more realistic during the Renaissance. "When oil was used in the 15th century it offered greater realism and allowed for finer detail than before."1 Oil paint made it easier to blend, thus creating a more convincing illusion of depth and realism. Before, tempera paint was used, which dried very quickly, making it difficult to get smooth blending. "...[Another] essential advancement made by Renaissance painters was the use of perspective, or the appearance of distance or depth on a flat surface. ... They showed perspective by enlarging objects closer to the front, using precise shading, drawing lines closer together as they receded, and other skillful methods."2 Perspective allowed artists to create more realistic work. Anatomy was also improved upon during the Renaissance. Instead of the stiff figures common in art from the Middle Ages, people had energy and fluid movements. Artists also focused on things such as muscles that would help them create figures that looked as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
